Seabrook and Blackhawks close on extension … Wild look at Penner … Waiver notes … Trade deadline video from Van. Sun

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Brent Seabrook and the Chicago Blackhawks are close to signing a 5 year contract extension believed to be worth just under $30 million.
  • Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun Times: The Chicago Blackhawks waived Nick Boynton, which may mean they are closer to adding a defenseman. Mike Commodore (CBJ) and Craig Rivet (BUF) are on re-entry waivers, and they’ve been linked to Jim Vandermeer (EDM), Ladislav Smid (EDM) and Brett Clark (TB).
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Minnesota Wild have definitely contact the Oilers about Dustin Penner. The Wild are looking to move Chuck Kobesew (Oilers have similar players) and draft picks, but they won’t give up a 2011 1st rounder, and they don’t have a 2nd rounder. Kobesew could be dealt to the Hurricanes who have always liked him. A Wild source said the asking price for Ales Hemsky was “astronomical.” An LA source said that Lombardi is unlikely to make a blockbuster move.
  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Marco Sturm was placed on waivers yesterday by the LA Kings, but is expected to go unclaimed and could rejoin them today. He was put on waivers to create roster flexibility for Monday’s trade deadline. They are at the max 23 roster players and didn’t want to risk losing one of their younger players. “We have to waive a player now because you cannot do it at the deadline. You need 24 hours,”
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Clarke MacArthur may be looking for a 3 year, $9 million. Burke may be looking for something closer to $2 million, Mikhail Grabovski ($2.9 million) and Nikolai Kulemin ($2.35 million). Burke may be able to get more than a 1st and 3rd he got for Versteeg. They are still focused on the defensive help with John-Michael Liles the leading option, it might take a 2nd round pick. Darren Dreger via twitter: Burke said a defenseman is a higher priority than a forward.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec left last night’s game in the 1st with an undisclosed injury. He stayed on the bench for most of the game, and “was said to be available if something happened to Mason”.
  • Nick Cotsoinka via twitter: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford, “If a defenseman came along that made some sense for us, we’d consider that. If not, we’re fine.”
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Waiver notes: “Rivet on re-entry; Bernier cleared; Mike Smith cleared; Marco Sturm on waivers; Nick Boynton on waivers; Kris Newbury (NYR) on waivers, Mike Commodore (CBJ) on re-entry, Todd Ford (Wash) on waivers, Wade Belak (Nash) on waivers”
  • Vancouver Sun: Cam Cole and Iain MacIntyre discuss the Canucks and the NHL trade deadline.

Rumors involving the Kings, Senators, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Hurricanes … and some injury notes

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The LA Kings are intrigued by Oilers forward Ales Hemsky. The Oilers are listening to offers but are not desperate to trade him. The Kings hope more teams fall out of the playoff race, increasing the amount of talent that might be available. Money is once again an issue for the Dallas Stars at the deadline, as it’s unknown if the lenders will give them the go ahead to add some help, they have struggled of late and are dropping in the standings. If they continue to drop in the standings and are on the playoff bubble, they make look for Brad Richards packages. As of yesterday, Senators GM Murray still hadn’t heard what Chris Phillips was thinking regarding waiving his no-trade. Sharks aren’t saying much about what they are planning on doing, have been looking for a top 4 defenseman in the past. Seabrook rumors were a “total fabrication.”
  • Helene Elliott via twitter: The LA Kings are still looking for a high-end forward. They were not in the late discussions with Ottawa for Mike Fisher.
  • Adam Jahns via twitter: Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman, “We’re trying to find a defenseman that can be a penalty-killing type and eat up some minutes on the PK.”
  • Darren Dreger of TSN: If the Red Wings continue to struggle defensively in the next 2 weeks, GM Ken Holland may look to make a deal. Though the Hurricanes would need a defenseman as part of the deal, they could consider trading Joe Corvo, Joni Pitkanen or Ian White.
  • Dan Tencer via twitter: McGuire (I’m guessing Pierre) on Sheldon Souray, “There’s some talk about Montreal for Sheldon.”
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: UFA’s Chris Phillips and Jarkko Ruutu are as good as gone by the trade deadline. The Senators are also getting some interest in Filip Kuba, Chris Kelly, and Chris Neil. Garrioch doesn’t think anyone will want Alex Kovalev. The Canadiens, Bruins, Sharks and Ducks are looking for defenseman and could be interested in Phillips. Chris Campoli may be a good fit in Anaheim, a UFA at season’s end. If they dealt Phillips to Montreal, they may want Max Pacioretty in the deal.
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Jonas Gustavsson will be out at least a week after he underwent a heart ablation procedure yesterday (his 3rd since the beginning of last year).
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: JS Giguere will start in net for the Maple Leafs tonight against the Canadiens. Giguere met with GM Brian Burke to discuss if they’ll look to trade him or not. He’d like to remain with the Leafs but would want to play if he does. “Hopefully I can give them a reason to keep me. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t even know if there’s a trade market for me anywhere. I still make a lot of money, so it’s something that can be tricky. I haven’t asked – anyway, I’m going to stop there.”
  • Thomas Reed via twitter: Scouts at the Blue Jackets-Avalanche game last night were the Thrashers, Flyers, Coyotes, Canucks, Maple Leafs, Penguins, Senators, Bruins, and Capitals.
  • David Rogers via twitter: John Davidson is reporting the David Perron is taking part in light workouts, but isn’t at the stage to begin skating.

What the Senators failed to mention about Fisher trade … Blackhawks looking for D, not shopping Seabrook … Roster notes

  • Wayne Scanlan via twitter: “In their Fisher trade release, Senators failed to mention if the Preds don’t win a playoff round, there is NO additional draft pick to Ott.”

No response from Phillips yet, Spezza hasn’t been asked to waive no-trade … Flyers scouting Leafs and Panthers … Versteeg could be next … Anderson leaves Avs

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers are still interested in Erik Cole, but the Hurricanes are holding on to the 8th spot, and likely wouldn’t move him if they are still in the playoff hunt.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray has asked Chris Phillips if he’d waive his no-trade clause or not,

“I have talked to (Phillips) about what he would like to have happen for him, but Chris has not come back to me,” said Murray. “The door is open, ‘Come in and tell me what you want me to do and what you would like to do.’

“I think he wants to stay in Ottawa. I’m not quite sure how that will work.”

  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Sens GM Murray hasn’t asked Jason Spezza if he’d waive his no-trade clause. Spezza says he wants to stay and help turn things around, and that it should be a short rebuilding process.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Craig Anderson has left the Avalanche and returned to Denver for personal reasons. John Grahame has been called up to be the backup. Dater believes it is a day-to-day thing.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: TJ Galiardi (wrist injury) and Kyle Cumiskey (head) have flown back to Denver for further evaluation. Forsberg will be at practice today and could play tonight.
  • Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Jamieson wonders that if the Avalanche continue to fall out of the playoff race, would they look to trade Peter Forsberg? Forsberg has a no-trade and no-movement clause, but did he come back this year to play for a team not going to the playoffs? Jamieson wonders if the Canucks would be interested if this scenario.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Kris Versteeg could be the next one moved by the Maple Leafs. The Leafs have denied a report that Versteeg is unhappy in Toronto, and wants to be traded. Burke is likely looking to get a center with size. Versteeg hasn’t filled the top-line role in which they had hoped (um, when is the last time he got a shot on a top line? He’s been playing for the 3rd line for as long as I can remember). “I’ve been through a lot already in my career,” Versteeg said. “Just another thing. Now it’s just you’re going to have to deal with until trade deadline. Who knows what happens? I’ve liked it here, I’ve had fun here and I guess whatever happens, happens.”
  • David Pagnotta via twitter: Scouts at the Maple Leafs-Devils game last night: Bruins, Canadiens, Predators, Flyers, Blues, Capitals, and 2 from the Penguins.
  • Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Murphy thinks that if the Bruins want to get the guy he wants at the right price, he been do it now.
  • Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald: Blackhawks exec Scotty Bowman on the Fan 590, “A couple weeks ago, we were looking at Calgary. We were maybe going to move some players. There was talk they might move a (Curtis) Glencross or (David) Moss. But I doubt now with them solidifying a playoff spot . . . .”
  • Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun: The Blackhawks may not be done dealing, and may still be looking to add a defenseman.

“We’ll keep an eye on things,” Bowman said Wednesday night. “We’re certainly out there looking to improve our team. That’s probably common to every team. [But] we’re not going to shy away from making another trade if it’s there to be made.

Bruins would consider trading Leafs 1st round pick … Will need to offer-up to get Bogosian … Seabrook being shopped … Ballard out a month

  • Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post: The Philadelphia Flyers have about $3.5 million in cap space, and may look to find a winger that can play on their 3rd line with Mike Richards and James van Riemsdyk (how many teams would like to have them on their 1st line?). Rental players they may look at include: PA Parenteau, Alex Tanguay, Radek Dvorak, Chris Higgins, Milan Hejduk and Radim Vrbata. The Flyers don’t have a 2nd round pick in this year’s draft. Talks are ongoing with Ville Leino, and the Flyers are believed to have offered a 3 years and $9 million or  4 years, $12 million.
  • Roger Millions via twitter: A source told Millions that the Blackhawks might be talking about trading Brent Seabrook, possibly to the Oilers. Million’s responds, “Really? C’mon.”
  • Mark Spector via twitter: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said he’d consider trading the 1st round pick they got from the Maple Leafs in the Phil Kessel deal: “Yeah, I’d look at it. Sure.” Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Confirms that Chiarelli told WEEI that he’d considering trading Toronto’s 1st round pick.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Zach Bogosian’s name has come up recently in trade rumors. Bogosian was the 3rd overall pick in 2008 behind Stamkos and Doughty. Is he really available? Yes, but it would take a big offer to get the Thrashers to move him. Thrashers GM Rick Dudley would say nobody on his team is an untouchable. They are not shopping him around either, but would listen to anything. It’s a longshot that he’s traded. Bogosian has struggled this year, recording only 11 points in 45 games so far, though he has played better of late.
  • Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky was wearing a no-contact jersey at practice yesterday. He’s still recovering from a severely separated shoulder that he chose to rehab over surgery. His return is still unknown, it could a week, two, or longer. Guillaume Latendresse is skating by himself, but it’s unsure when he’ll start practicing with the team.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Keith Ballard only suffered a knee sprain after being tangled up (some say slew foot) with Milan Michalek on Monday. He’ll be out 3 to 4 weeks. Sami Salo is eligible to return for Saturday’s game against the Flames.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: It looks like the Calgary Flames won’t be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. They are in the playoff race, and they don’t have the draft picks or the prospects.
  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Islanders forward Trent Hunter had surgery on his torn MCL and should be ready for training camp next year.
  • David Neal of the Miami Herald: Scouts attending last night’s Blues-Panthers game were from: the Devils, Hurricanes, Penguins, Senators, Bruins, Rangers, Canucks, and Kings.

Enstrom out 2-3 weeks … Seabrook-Hawks continue talks … Johnson not being shopped by Blues … Muller may look for head coaching gig … Bruins team needs Video

  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Brent Seabrook and Chicago Blackhawks continue to talk contract extension. The 25-year old is currently making $3.5 million and will be looking for a bit of a raise.
  • Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: Ales Hemsky (out with a concussion) and Dustin Penner could be made available by the Oilers, but they are looking for what a lot of teams are, centers and defensemen. A team did ask the Penguins about Alex Goligoski and were told he’s not available.
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The St. Louis Blues aren’t shopping defenseman Erik Johnson. Carlo Colaiacovo is beginning to get some vision back to his eye, he took a puck in the face again last week. David Perron may try some light exercises in hope that it could lessen some of his concussion symptoms.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: NJ Devils recent resurgence may lessen trade talk on Jason Arnott. The Canadiens are rumored to be interested if he were to be made available.
  • Francois Gagnon of Cyberpresse: Kirk Muller (assistant coach) may leave the Canadiens and pursue a head coaching position. Ottawa, Toronto, New Jersey, and Calgary could be looking for new coaches after the season. He doesn’t have much head coaching experience, but he’s been an assistant since 2006.
  • Rob Longley via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Nikolai Kulemin is expected today play tonight after getting punched in the face by Tim Gleason.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Put on waivers today were Juraj Simek (BOS), Mike Silenka (ATL) and Craig Conroy (CGY) on waivers today.

Komisarek in trouble with LAPD … Will Senators fire Clouston, claim Nabokov? Hawks-Seabrook talking contract not trade

  • Kukla’s Korner providing link to TMZ story: TMZ as learned that Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Komisarek “allegedly punched a woman in the face at an L.A. nightclub earlier this month.”

Law enforcement sources tell us … the 28-year-old defensive powerhouse was named in a police report filed by a woman who claims the whole thing went down after Komisarek decided to lift her up in the air at a Hollywood nightclub.

We’re told the woman claims she demanded Komisarek put her down — but he refused — so she slapped him in the face.

The woman claims Komisarek immediately set her down … and then punched her in the face, causing her to bleed.

The woman claims Komisarek left the club … so she went to the cops.

  • George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings welcomed 3 injured players back to practice yesterday, Danny Cleary, Mike Modano and Pavel Datsyuk. Cleary and Datsyuk are expected to be back in the Wings lineup on Feb. 2. Modano is expected to be out until March. The Wings recalled goalie Jordan Pearce and sent down Joey MacDonald.
  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: After a 7-1 loss, the end may be here for Senators coach Cory Clouston. There is one game left before the all-star break, so the timing could be perfect. The players know something could be happening soon. Garrioch thinks the Sens could put a claim on Evgeni Nabokov to help their “woeful goaltending situation.” Elliott Friedman in a series of tweets said he’d claim Nabokov if he were the Sens. Scott Morrison thinks there could be several teams interested in make a claim. Pierre LeBrun has also heard that several teams could be interested. LeBrun added that if a team claimed him, they could not turn around and trade him, he would have to go through waivers before he could be traded. Ansar Khan of MLive: Teams that could put a claim on Nabokov could be Senators, Islanders (shot down yesterday), Sharks, or possibly teams looking for a backup Kings, Coyotes, Ducks, Blues, Flames and Hurricanes.(If I’m the Senators, I don’t make a claim. Their season is basically lost and they don’t have a shot to the playoffs. They’ll get a high draft pick in the #3-7 range, why try to improve to the #7-12 range. Though there is not guarantee he could help them out that much. Time to clear house and rebuild.)
  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman shoots down the rumors that they might trade soon to be RFA Brent Seabrook. “There’s no truth to that at all. He’s been dynamite for us here,” Bowman told Sporting News. “We’re trying to re-sign him.” Talks are talking  place, “I wouldn’t say we’re close to closing it but we’re talking more frequently. We’re working through it,” Bowman said. “It’s good dialogue. He wants to be here, we want him here. We have to try and make it work.”
  • Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: The Flyers continue to move along without saying who there number one goalie is. Sergei Bobrovsky has played 30 games and Brian Boucher has played 19 games, but Boucher has played more in the past month or so. The Flyers will at some point have to name a #1, “We’re a long way from the playoffs and still trying to sort things out,” said goalie coach Jeff Reese. “As cliché as it sounds, we are going one game at a time.” Boucher is expected to start tonight and Bobrovsky could go tomorrow.

Sunday morning NHL Rumor Roundup with Hotstove and SourcesSay video

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: “The level of talk has heated up quite a bit,” said a league executive. “I get the sense some teams are getting antsy.” Brian Burke is the most active. The San Jose Sharks would like to add a veteran blueliner and might be willing to deal D Niclas Wallin and D Kent Huskins. Teams may be reluctant to give up 2nd round picks this year as it’s looking like a deep draft. The Canucks could be looking to move a Dman with soon, possibily Christian Ehrhoff or Kevin Bieksa. The Devils are also looking for defensive help, “They look to me like a team with a bad defence, an aging goalie and a superstar (Ilya Kovalchuk) that’s having a hard time fitting in. That can be a bad recipe,” said a league executive. If the Panthers fall out of the playoffs they could look to trade goalie Tomas Vokoun and winger Chris Higgins. The Sharks could be interested in Vokoun. The Panthers are also trying to move Rostislav Olesz and his 3 remaining years and $3.125 million cap hit.The Lightning are looking for blueline help. The Penguins are looking for a top 6 forward, Bill Guerin doesn’t seem like a possibility at this time.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Canucks have offered Christian Ehrhoff a contract, they counter offered, both sides are apart, and will table talks until later on in the season. Shea Weber’s side will talk with GM Poile this week when the Predators are in Toronto. Several teams have are talking to Miro Satan. Contract talks between Brent Seabrook and the Chicago Blackhawks haven’t taken place yet. Steve Yzerman has met with Steven Stamkos’s agent, they’ve begun contract extension talks, but it will take awhile. The Ottawa Senators and Chris Phillips’ side have had initial contract talks.
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: 16 of the 20 Maple Leafs dressed last night were brought in by Brian Burke (Phaneuf and Armstrong not included). He’s done okay bringing in some better players like Kessel and Phaneuf, but the team still needs a Brian Skrudland/Doug Risebrough type center “who makes teams better without necessarily scoring goals.”
  • Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove with Ron MacLean, Eric Francis, Mike Milbury & Pierre LeBrun
  • John Shannon of Sportsnet (video) talks about Jeff Carter’s contract, Mark Cuban could be interested in buying the Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils might look to change coaches, Miro Satan has a list of 3 teams.  Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Mark Cuban said in an email he’d only be interested in the Stars as a minority partner, and “only to help him with control of the American Airlines Center.”

Saturday morning NHL rumors and notes

  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: To start training camp, the Sharks have split up Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley. Thornton is centering Ryan Clowe and Devin Setoguchi, while Joe Pavelski is centering Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau.
  • Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: Andrei Markov is still recovering from late season knee surgery, but it’s progressing. “In my dreams, I want to come back tomorrow, but I can’t. Maybe another month, I don’t know, maybe more, maybe less,” he said.
  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The 25 year old Brent Seabrook might be the next player GM Stan Bowman tries to lock up long term. Seabrook will be a RFA at seasons end, and is making $3.5 million this year.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: If the Columbus Blue Jackets defensive corps has some struggles during training camp/pre-season, don’t be surprised if Sheldon Souray talks heat up. The Oilers want a defenseman or 2 in return, and have cap space to take on more contract.
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Ken Hitchcock will be attending the Red Wings training camp. “Hitch said, ‘I want to learn, can I come to camp?’ ” Babcock said. “He wants to learn, but I want to learn, too.” “If he can get something from us and we can get something from him, that’s a bonus.”
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: The bringing in the versatile Adam Mair on a tryout means the Devils won’t be bringing back Dean McAmmond. Lou said the door isn’t closed in bringing back defenseman Mike Mottau. Mottau’s fate with the Devils depends on if they move out defenseman as they attempt to get under the cap.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson and defenseman Tomas Kaberle have had they private meeting to smooth things out regarding their alleged feud. “I know (a feud) is a nice story for you guys to hang your hats on,” he said added with a smile, “but there really isn’t an issue. I just wanted to get that out there and be on the offensive and give you the information so you aren’t running around thinking (he’s benched) and there is something else going on.”
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators have received calls to see if they would be interested in bringing in any of Robert Lang, Bill Guerin and Petr Sykora on a tryout, but they declined. They don’t have much room under the cap so they don’t want to bring anyone else in.

No big offer for Kovalchuk from KHL? No over-paying on Kulemin … Bertuzzi gets 2 year offer

  • Chris Botta of AOL Fanhouse: It was rumored yesterday that Ilya Kovalchuk received a $14 million per season contract offer from the KHL, but a ‘reliable source’ tells Fanhouse that, that is not the case. New Jersey’s 1st round playoff loss may have leassened the chances of him returning. The Devils could use his star power to fill some seats, but they also have another LWer in Zach Parise, who be looking for a new contract after next season.
  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Burke would like to re-sign Nikolai Kulemin, but not a salary based on ice-time on a bad team. Burke doesn’t want to lose a promising young player, but he won’t overpay for it. Kulemin has good size, skill and improved greatly as the season progressed, but he’s not a 1st player just yet. Two former Leafs, Ian White and Matt Stajan were in the same boat, more playing opporunity than might have received on a better team, which is one reason they were moved out as their contract demands would have been higher. Stajan signed for 4 year and $14 million. If you’ve watched Stajan over the years, you’d know that Stajan isn’t worth $3.5 million a season. A handful teams have confirmed to touched base with Burke regarding Tomas Kaberle.
  • Kevin Allen of the USA Today: By now everyone and mother knows that the Blackhawks have a rough summer ahead of them trying to get some players re-signed, and shedding others. Allen thinks the Antti Niemi could ask for a deal in the $4 million range. They also have to look ahead to next summer when Dustin Byfuglien and more importantly, Brent Seabrook, will be restricted free agents.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM (Ken Holland) and assistant GM (Jim Nill) will be signing extensions later this week. The Red Wings have also sent Todd Bertuzzi a 2 year contract offer, and extended qualifying offers to Justin Abdelkader, Patrick Eaves, Darren Helm, Derek Meech and Drew Miller. They $6.5 to sign the above players, and possibly Andreas Lilja and/or a gritty forward.
  • Minneapolis Star Tribune:The Wild may be looking to move a defenseman this off-season. Cam Barker, Marek Zidlicky (no-trade clause) and Greg Zanon are probably not going anywhere. Nick Schultz would be a prime candidate but his 4 years at $3.6 million a season could be difficult to move. That leaves Brent Burns as the most likely candidate. The wild hope/think they may be able to get a top center or top 6 winger.
  • TSN: Jerry Reinsdorf has said “it was time to move on” from his pursuit of purchasing the Phoenix Coyotes, leaving the Ice Edged Group as the only local buyer. I’m actually surprised he lasted this long in this sale farse. I’d love to hear the comments he tells his buddies from the other leagues.
  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. has said the ‘Canes will be younger and that they won’t be spending over $50 million next season, it could be in the $44 million range. They won’t be active in the free agent market. It is also unlikely that they will be re-signing Ray Whitney before the July 1st free agent date.

The Headshot Issue Revisited…

When I posted the original  “Headshot Issue..” article on Monday, November 16th, 2009 I surely didn’t anticipate just how much momentum this “hot topic” would generate.

I stand by my opinion in that article, that all the rule changes have unforeseen negative effects that inevitably require more rule changes, that there’s always a “buzz word” that carries the most weight when condemning the accused in the time after an incident and before the NHL, notably Colin Cambell, review the play.

The buzz word this year is “headshot” and now every hit is being fit into that box in one way or another. Everyone from players to coaches to GM’s are using the catch-phrase headshot when sharing their feelings regarding the latest controversial hit, weather the term applies or not seems irrelivent.

Take a look at the play in the video posted below by Mark earler today, it shows the replay of  Brent Seabrook being CHARGED by James Wisniewski. I’m not sure who the Duck’s comentators are but they actually start discussing weather the hit is going to fall under the umbrella of headshots…. What?

I’m not privileged to all the criteria for what constitutes a headshot by league standards but surely this doesn’t qualify. To be completely honest, I kind of felt like Seabrook was selling it a little bit. The tell tale sign being when he goes down to the ice, eyes closed in apparent confusion etc, he puts his arm out to soften the landing… An attempt to maximize the penalty, as all players are instructed to do in these kinds of circumstances.

The point is that no single rule is going to solve all the problems with players being injured and you can’t fit every incident into the same box. The hit by James Wisniewski was clearly intent to injure, and charging, and should be treated as such but it’s a seperate issue from the headshot issue that everyone is talking about. Besides, what footage do you think they’ll be running in the commercials leading up to the next game between the Ducks and Blackhawks? Maybe call it a “rivalry”…

Hockey is a tough game, players get hit hard. Sometimes players go too far and get disciplined for their actions but when the perception is that the incident is part of the bigger problem players then become guilty of all the incidents preceding the one they actually took part in. It will be interesting to see how the NHL handles the possible suspension.

update: Wisniewski suspended 8 games.

Another Dirty Hit? Contending Teams Might go After Turco for Next Season … Rangers-Isles in 3D

  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Chicago Blackhawks may have lost another defenseman to a dirty hit. Brent Seabrook was run by Ducks defenseman, and former Blackhawk, James Wisniewski. Seabrook did get up and skate to the bench, but he did not return.

“There are certain hits in a game that are tolerable if you have the puck,” a visibly angry Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “(If) you hit a guy without the puck you can kill a guy. It’s the most dangerous hit in the history of the game. He tried to hurt him. That’s as a bad a hit as you can ever have in the game.”

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The 34-year-old Marty Turco is most likly playing out his days in Dallas, as they will probably go with Kari Lehtonen next season. Turco might get interest from Detroit, San Jose, Chicago, or Washington.
  • Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Jonathan Cheechoo and his $3.5 million salary are still in the minors, with the Ottawa Senators expected to buy him out after the season. If the Sens buy him out, he’ll count about $1.165 million against the cap for the next 2 years. He had 5 goals and 9 assists in 61 games for the Senators before being demoted.
  • Richard Sandomir of the NY Times: Next Wednesday’s NY Rangers – NY Islanders game will be televised in 3D on MSG Network.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus  Dispatch: So a day after finding out they’ll be without defenseman Jan Hejda for the remainder of the season, the Blue Jackets learned yesterday that Rostislav Klesla is doubtful to return this season as well. Klesla has been out since November with a hip injury, but had hope to return this year.

Around the Boards: Fri. Oct. 23rd

    • If The Globe and Mail isn`t on your daily list of sites to read, you should add it. Aside from excellent hockey coverage, they also have a weekly podcast, done every Thursday I think. Here is yesterday`s podcast.
    • James Mirtle of The Globe and Mail: Ron Wilson has his fingers crossed that Jonas Gustavsson can go Saturday against the Canucks, but Monday against Anaheim is more likely. Struggling blueliner, Luke Schenn, found himself without a defensive partner at practice. Could he be the odd man out on Saturday?
