- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers are taking calls for Ales Hemsky as half the league is looking for a top 6 forward. The Oilers need a puck moving defenseman more than a draft pick. It’s unlikely the Predators would give up Ryan Ellis for Hemsky. One scout thinks the Predators would rather have Ryan Smyth over Hemsky, but Smyth likely won’t waive his no-trade clause at the deadline. The Senators are a wild card for Hemsky. The Oilers have liked Drew Stafford. Matheson wonders if the Kings would be interested in a Jonathan Bernier for Magnus Paajarvi deal this summer. The Blackhawks might take a look at Chris Campoli for their 4-5 hole that they are looking to fill. The Predators may look at taking offers for backup Anders Lindback this summer.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Molinari lists some ‘rental’ players that could be available this year: Jason Blake (Ana), Josh Green (Edm), Nicklas Hagman (Ana), Adam Hall (TB), Ales Hemsky (Edm), Kristian Huselius (CBJ), Saku Koivu (Ana), Dominic Moore (TB), Frans Nielsen (NYI), Samuel Pahlsson (Ana), Jay Pandolfo (NYI), P.A. Parenteau (NYI), George Parros (Ana), Vinny Prospal (CBJ), Tuomo Ruutu (Car), Teemu Selanne (Ana) and Ryan Smyth (Edm).
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Capitals Alex Ovechkin will have a hearing today for his high hit on Michalek. Penguins Zbynek Michalek will have a hearing today for his elbow on Hendricks.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers GM Glen Sather needs to add a defenseman that can handle big minutes down the stretch. They’ve always liked Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason. Stars Sheldon Souray is an interesting option given his ability on the power play, but there are questions about his ability to defend. Ryan Suter is a possibility if he becomes available and if they want to go that direction.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika wonders if the Stars may have to consider moving Stephane Robidas, Brenden Morrow or Nicklas Grossman to create roster room for younger players. Heika doesn’t think so, as it sends a message that they are giving up this year. If they fall out of the race though, they may do something.
- Dallas Stars via twitter: The Stars have placed Jamie Benn on the IR and recalled Matt Fraser.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: More will be known about Jonathan Toews injury after practice today. The Blackhawks have only 1 game before the All-Star break.
- Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets Dustin Byfuglien and Evander Kane didn’t accompany the team to Carolina for tonight’s game. They play the Rangers on Tuesday in NY. Byfuglien and Kane are not expected to play until after the All-Star break.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger could play tonight after missing the last 5 games with a concussion. Predators defenseman Ryan Suter is expected to be back after missing 3 games with an upper-body injury.
- Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Recently signed Brett Lebda will make his debut tonight, and will be on the top pairing with Fedor Tyutin.

- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: The Blackhawks are letting everyone know what they would like to trade for. A defenseman for their 2nd pairing, and a veteran forward, preferably a 2nd line center. The Hawks haven’t talked to the Ducks who floated their big 3 and Francois Beauchemin earlier this month. In the Western Conference, only the Ducks, Oilers and Blue Jackets could be sellers so far. It would take a significant piece for Oilers Sam Gagner. In the Eastern Conference, the Sabres, Canadiens, NY Islanders, Lightning, Hurricanes and maybe the Jets could be sellers. The Sabres have Derek Roy, Drew Stafford and Brad Boyes but their price could be high. They should at least call about Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu of the Hurricanes. Untouchable prospects could be Dylan Olsen, Kevin Hayes and Brandon Saad. Brandon Pirri, Jeremy Morin, Shawn Lalonde and Brian Connelly could interest some teams.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: (mailbag) If the Stars don’t sign Nicklas Grossman to a contract extension, they could trade him by the deadline. As for anyone else, that would depend on whether their buyers or sellers. If they are sellers, there should be some interest in Brenden Morrow, Sheldon Souray, Mark Fistric and Grossman. If they are in a playoff at the deadlines, would have to think they are buyers.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Devils defenseman Henrik Tallinder will be out 6 to 8 weeks with a blood clot in his lower left leg. He’s been bothered by a sore leg and an MRI yesterday revealed.
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian could be ready to return tomorrow night. He’s missed 5 consecutive games with a lower-body injury.
- Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames GM Jay Feaster confirms that recently acquired goalie Karri Ramo has 1 year left on his KHL contract.
- Roger Millions via twitter: Jay Feaster confirms that they are considering signing Krys Kolanos to a 2 way deal.
- Roger Millions via twitter: Alex Tanguay will join the Flames in Edmonton and could play on Saturday. He’ll be cleared by doctors today and Sutter will decide Saturday morning if he’s playing or not.
- Roger Millions via twitter: Flames forward Curtis Glencross was put on the IR and out at least 7 days. MRI results are not in yet.
- Adam Kimelman via twitter: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on a Jaromir Jagr deal: “We’ve had some talks. I don’t really want to comment any further on that right now. We’ve talked about it.”
- Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Blue Jackets defenseman Radek Martinek will miss the rest of the season with a concussion. They’ve signed Brett Lebda to a 1 year deal.
- Craig Custance via twitter: Sharks goalie Antero Niittymaki will play for Worchester of AHL on Friday and Saturday. Interested teams will get a chance to scout him.

- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Chris Pronger held a conference call with reporters yesterday as he continues to rehab his back and right hand.
“the goal is to be ready for Game 1 of the regular season. I’m starting to progress. . . . Once I get cleared, I can start getting into a full-lifting program.”
He feels his hand is 80-85% healed, which has put him 2 months behind in his strength program. He hopes to get clearance in a week to begin lifting weights.
“I don’t know that you could say I was breaking down with broken bones and being hit by pucks and all the rest,” he said. “Those are things that sometimes can be avoided. Perhaps now I may not block as many shots. I might just get out of the way and let our million-dollar goalie stop those things.”
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Ducks GM Bob Murray said yesterday that Teemu Selanne “has been struggling a bit” with his knee and thought “he was getting depressed” about the rehab. Murray noted that Selanne “intends to go pretty hard this week” and they’ll be in touch after. Murray added that there were a few days “where it wasn’t bugging him,” there is no timetable on when Selanne will make a decision to play or not.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Nikolai Zherdev said he didn’t receive any firm offers from the NHL. Zherdev added: “I will be back there. I am sure of that!”
- National Post: Mike Comrie recently suffered a setback in his rehab from hip surgery.
“In wanting to return to play after surgery, I pushed myself too early and that has not helped my recovery,” Comrie said in a statement. “I will return to the NHL when I am healthy and able to play at the level I have come to expect of myself.”
- Glen Andresen of NHL.com: With the Wild trading James Sheppard to the Sharks, it “further solidifies Fletcher’s intent to let younger Wild players like Colton Gillies, Cody Almond and Casey Wellman battle for roster spots among forwards.”
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Alexei Kovalev to SovSport: “In two season w/the #Sens I still couldn’t get Clouston’s game plan. It appeared he scoffed at some players.”

- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Nicklas Lidstrom decision to either retire or continue playing for the Red Wings should be made known by next Wednesday’s NHL Awards Show. “Nick said he’ll have a decision by then,” said Holland.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Canucks may have a plan to keep both Kevin Bieksa and Christian Ehrhoff, but both would have to slight discount. Keith Ballard has 4 years at $4.2 million per season, and would be hard to trade on his own, but if they packaged him with Cory Schneider a deal might be able to get done.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Kevin Bieksa could remain with the Canucks. “The unrestricted free agent is expected sign a contract extension with the Presidents’ Trophy winners because his play has dictated that consideration. And he’s willing take a discount, too.”
“I think everybody takes less to be play here,” the 30-year-old Bieksa said Friday. “It’s such a great organization that you want to be here. It’s the culture. It’s like Detroit. If you want to win, you take less. It’s a great team and a great one for a long time and you want to be a part of that. The bonus is the core guys I’ve grown up and the strong friendships. That factors into the decision-making process.
“There’s no need to draw anything out. I’m pretty optimistic we can reach an agreement.”
Sami Salo could be thinking the same thing. Canucks GM Mike Gillis has shown interest in bringing Salo back. They currently have 13 players signed for $45.6 million.
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Many think that Tomas Kaberle won’t be re-signed by the Bruins, but Conroy thinks that may not be a good idea,
They’ve been hunting for a puck-moving defenseman and it’s an element the B’s need. They might not match his current salary of $4.25 million, but there aren’t a lot of options. He’s no shutdown defenseman, but the B’s have those in Dennis Seidenberg and Zdeno Chara.”
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Ilya Bryzagalov spent a couple days in Philly, and left without a contract. Both sides agreed to continue talking next week. Bryzgalov reportedly has been looking for 6 years at $6 million per season. The Flyers would like to have a deal in place by the NHL Draft next Friday. A deal wouldn’t be able to be signed until some cap space has been shed. They have about $59 million tied up so far for next year, with the cap going up to about $63.5 million.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: The Maple Leafs have around $23 million in cap space with 3 notable RFAs to sign (Luke Schenn, Clarke MacArthur and Tyler Bozak). They obviously would like to find a centerman for Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul. They could also use a puck-moving, power play defenseman. Options could be Christian Ehrhoff, James Wisniewski, Joni Pitkanen, Kevin Bieksa, and Andrei Markov. If Toronto is going to sign one of their needs on July 1st, it’s likely on the blueline. The Leafs could free up more cap space by making a trade and having Ben Scrivens as the backup, or by demoting Brett Lebda. They may be stuck with Mike Komisarek and his $4.5 million. Burke won’t be drafting by position, and priorities are “character” and “footspeed.”

- Brad Zeimer of the Vancouver Sun: Cancucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa will return after missing 15 games with a broken foot. He’ll likely be paired with Dan Hamhuis. Aaron Rome or Chris Tanev will be a healthy scratch. Their 2nd to 4th lines could look like this tonight: Mason Raymond-Ryan Kesler-Chris Higgins, Raffi Torres-Maxim Lapierre-Jannik Hansen, Jeff Tambellini-Alex Bolduc-Victor Oreskovich.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars forward Loui Eriksson made it through a full practice yesterday, and hopes to play tonight against Anaheim. Coach Marc Crawford is a little more cautious as Eriksson has been out with a concussion, a decision should be made after this mornings skate. Defenseman Nicklas Grossman has an MCL sprain, and will be out for “a bit” according to Crawford. Karlis Skrastins is doubtful with a lacerated thigh. Adam Burish is still not skating with a lower body injury. Kari Lehtonen will be in net tonight.
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Flyers tough guy Jody Shelly will be out 4 weeks with a fractured orbital bone after being struck by a deflected puck. He’ll have surgery tomorrow to repair the broken bone.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke said their was “No chance” when asked if the Leafs would consider buying out the remaining 3 years of Mike Komisarek’s contract. It would have carried a $1.38 million cap hit for the next 6 years. Komisarek is finishing up his 2nd year of a 5 year, $22.5 million deal.
- Damian Cox of the Toronto Star: Cox thinks that if the Maple Leafs don’t go after Ilya Bryzgalov this summer, they’ll still need to bring in an experienced goalie in case James Reimer can’t repeat this year’s play.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Koshan wonders if Brett Lebda will be next seasons Jeff Finger, buried in the minors. Lebda has 1 more year at $1.4 million and has been a big disappointment this year for the Maple Leafs.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Tomas Fleischmann has been out with a pulmonary emboli since Jan. 18th skated for the first time, though he won’t play again this season. It’s looks like he’ll be able to play next year, but he’s a UFA on July 1st. Dater thinks they should re-sign him.
Players with the worst plus/minus so far this season

So the all-star break is upon us (yawn), and in honor this 4 day break, I decided to put together a list of the worst plus/minuses so far this season. I’m still amazed (and annoyed, on my fantasy team) that Kovalchuk leads this category. I know he doesn’t always focus on the defensive side of the things but….. Finding 4 San Jose Sharks is also a bit of a surprise. Maple Leafs defenseman/forward Brett Lebda is a funny case as he’s a -19 in 22 games, that’s terrible.

- Aaron Portzline via twitter: When the Columbus Blue Jackets made Fedor Tyutin a healthy scratch last week, Rangers GM Glen Sather inquired. When NY Rangers made Michael Del Zotto a healthy scratch, Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson inquired. No Tyutin and Filatov for Del Zotto was discussed.
- George Richards via twitter: Tomas Vokoun will start for the Panthers tonight against the Flyers.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Bruins forward Brad Marchand is out tonight. Daniel Paille will be on a line with Gregory Campbell and Shawn Thornton.
- Arthur Staple via twitter: Vinny Prospal practiced with the NY Rangers today in a non-contact jersey.

- Andy Stickland via twitter: Was told that Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell is about 2 weeks away from returning to the line up.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Despite being 4-0 the Leafs are expected to make one line up change for tonight, Brett Lebda will replace Carl Gunnarsson, who only played 6 minutes on Friday after being benched by Ron Wilson.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: As many people have already figured out, the Edmonton Oilers are not in a hurry to rid themselves of Sheldon Souray.
“We’ve tried to find a hockey deal for the last year, and the next thing is either placing him on re-entry waivers or waiting until the spring and making a hockey trade,” Tambellini said.
“A cash asset now or trade asset later — that’s what we’ll have to evaluate now.”
Brad Richards now finds himself as the number one offensive free agent next summer after Joe Thornton signed an extension with the Sharks. Without new ownership in place, it’s extremely difficult for GM Joe Nieuwendyk to hammer out a new long term deal. Nieuwendyk said at some point he’ll have to talk to the league as he’ll need to figure out to keep him or trade him at the deadline (Richards has a no movement clause).
“Tom Hicks and Joe Nieuwendyk are in charge of the day-to-day business decisions in Dallas,” said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. “But due to the possibly imminent sale of the club, major financial transactions — especially those that may have lasting impacts on the club’s operations moving forward — are, as a matter of practice, vetted through the league.”
Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Los Angeles Kings defenseman Matt Green returned to practice on Sunday. Green had off-season shoulder surgery, and it’s possible that he returns to lineup in the next 7-10 days. Green also got a foot infection from ‘lace bite’ last week.
“I have no idea right now,” Greene said after practice today. “I feel pretty good. I was feeling pretty good before I was off the ice, and this is my first day back skating, so we’ll see how I feel tomorrow. I feel good right now, but I might be dying tonight. We’ll see what happens. I think it just depends on taking a hit, too. I haven’t really gotten a heavy bump yet, or any of that. The guys have been pretty nice to me, so that’s what it depends on right now.”
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Alexei Kovalev is in coach Cory Clouston’s doghouse, and if the Ottawa Senators could trade him, they would. Adrian Aucoin may be the last player in the NHL to use a wooden stick.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: New St. Louis Blues defensive pairing: Colaiacovo with Johnson, Pietrangelo with Jackman, and Brewer with Polak.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks rookie Cam Fowler left the game last night after scoring his 1st NHL goal. Fowler took a questionable hit from Shane Doan, the extent of the injury is not yet known.
- Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago: The demotion of Blackhawks defenseman Nick Leddy surprised some. The Hawks may feel he’s not ready to log 19+ NHL minutes, and was playing on the out of position. Niklas Hjalmarsson is coming off his suspension, and Jassen Cullimore was recalled.
Leafs have added cap space after Jeff Finger is placed on waivers

- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The Toronto Maple Leafs cap number after Jeff Finger was waived now sits at $4,079,500, but can change due to injuries, recalls etc. Cox thinks this now means that the Leafs will look to collect some bad contracts. Upwards of 10 teams are close to the cap and could consider moving a body or two to free up a little space. Anaheim is at $56 million and are not a good a hockey team. Vancouver, Boston, and Philadelphia are flirting with the cap ceiling. Dallas and St. Louis have self imposed budget, and are fine for this year, but heading into next season it may not alright.
- Michael Traikos of the National Post: Ron Wilson had this to say about Finger being placed on waivers,
“We have seven guys better than him right now,” said Wilson. “And that’s really what it came down to. We’re not going to carry eight defencemen. We don’t even want to carry two extra forwards, so I think going forward this will be fine.
Brent Lebda is off Injured Reserved, but won’t be in the lineup tonight against the Penguins. There is a chance he plays on Friday against the Rangers.

Finger counts $112,903 against the salary cap, so his cap number if he remains in the AHL all year is $3,387,097. Bonus Cushion – $4.35 million. Projected salary totals (current, healthy roster) – $53.27 million. Max total bonuses – $5.12 million. Cap space before bonuses – $4.73 million.

- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Colorado Avalanche have lost Peter Mueller with his 2nd concussion in the last 6 months, and 3rd serious concussion in his career. He’s out indefinitely.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Sheldon Souray can be put on waivers today, but don’t count on the Oilers doing that.
- Mike Zeisberger via twitter: Maple Leafs defenseman Brett Lebda and Matt Lashoff are both out for 10-14 days with shoulder injuries.
- Tim Panaccio via twitter: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren tells CSNPhilly that goaltender Michael Leighton has a lower back issue and the team is “cautiously optimistic.” And so it begins for the Flyers goaltending issues.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild backup goalie, Josh Harding, suffered a knee injury last night. An MRI will be done today, but a Blues doctor said last night it involves a liagment. Coach Todd Richards, “Right now we’re hoping it’s something minor and something that will take a little bit of rehab, a little bit of time off, and hopefully we can get him back on the ice as soon as possible.” Anton Khudobin is next in line to backup Niklas Backstrom.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Marek Svatos will be joining Jaromir Jagr with Omsk of the KHL.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Carlo Colaiacovo is day-to-day with a lower body injury. He suffered the injury last night trying to knock down a clearing attempt. He’ll be re-evaluated today.
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Staffan Kronwall realizes he’s probably going to end up in the AHL season, but he’d rather be back in Sweden with his new family. Kronwall hopes that if he’s going to demoted, they could loan him to a European team. “I was hoping to play in Europe this year. If not this year, it’s obviously next year.”

- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The New Jersey Devils continue to look for trading partners, but haven’t been able to find any takes just yet. It’s looking like they are going to have to bury money in the minors.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Nick Boynton was hit with a one game suspension for making a throat-cutting gesture after a fight with Lightning Blair Jones on Wednesday night. He’ll be suspended for the 1st regular season game, and can continue to play in the pre-season. Video at the bottom of this entry
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Anaheim Ducks owner Samuelis said that the teams payroll will stay in the $54-55 million range, despite losing “double-digit millions”. They are not looking for partners.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Brayden Schenn, 5th overall pick in ’09, is vying for a job on the LA Kings 4th line. Schenn is wearing a supportive brace on his knee that he injured in rookie camp. Schenn centered Kyle Clifford and Oscar Moller for most of last night’s game. If he doesn’t make the Kings, he’ll have to go back to junior as he’s still too young to play in the AHL (have to be 20, he’s still only 19).
- Kevin Allen via twitter: Colin Wilson will likely be a top 6 forward for the Nashville Predators this year, will be on the wing and not at center.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: There may only be 2 spots still available on the Atlanta Thrashers roster, their 4th line center and 7th defenseman. Nigel Dawes and Fredrik Pettersson should make the team according to Vivlamore.
- Ben Kuzma via twitter: There was a rumor floating around Vancouver yesterday that Darcy Hordichuk was placed on waivers, but that is not true.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Maple Leafs defenseman Brett Lebda was seen leaving the arena last night with his arm in a sling. Jonas Siegel tweeted that Lebda has a bruised shoulder according to coach Ron Wilson.
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Nikolai Khabibulin hasn’t played in an exhibition game yet, but his time is coming, he’ll play in 2 of the 4 remaining pre-season games. Khabibulin hasn’t been in a game since last November.
