Brassard getting interest … Lucic escapes suspension … Tyutin the translator … Not a lot of interest in Nabokov … NHL won’t own Coyotes much longer

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators might be mildly interested in Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard, who could fit in as their 2nd line center. Cost could be a concern for the Senators, as he carries a $3.2 million cap hit through 2013-14. The Islanders are also believed to be interested. Another option could be Kyle Turris, who needs to sign a deal by December 1st. Flames center Matt Stajan and his $3.5 million for 3 years is available. Though teams are looking for defenseman, Filip Kuba and Brian Lee are not getting much interest.
  • Dan Rose of NHL.com: Milan Lucic escaped punishment from Brendan Shanahan.

“I had the hearing because I did make an initial assessment of the play as I do with all plays, but I did have some questions for Milan and I wanted to hear directly from him,” Shanahan told NHL.com. “They were regarding his intent; at what point did he know there was going to be a collision; and whether or not he felt he had the time to avoid the collision. I was satisfied with his answers.”

“The minor penalty called on the ice was the correct call,” Shanahan said. “And, while it’s unfortunate that Miller was hurt I saw nothing egregious about this hit that would elevate it to supplemental discipline.”

  • Elliotte Freidman of CBC: Blue Jackets defenseman Fedor Tyutin, who was rumored to be traded for Evgeni Nabokov, is part of the teams solution. Speculation started as he was asked to stay behind after their game with Kris Russell, Russell was traded to the Blues, so someone assumed Tyutin was being traded as well. Tyutin was asked to hang around in case they needed someone to talk to Nikita Nikitin, who doesn’t speak much English. Islanders GM Garth Snow told Eric Francis that there isn’t much interest in Evgeni Nabokov. One GM: “There are a lot of us who don’t like our teams.” Kyle Turris’ agent met with Coyotes GM Don Maloney on November 2nd when the Coyotes were in Colorado, neither side is saying anything.
  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Senior league sources are saying that this will be the last year the NHL owns the Phoenix Coyotes. There are 2 groups that have been approved to buy an NHL team, but neither has consummated a sale. There is an estimated 50/50 chance the team will remain in Glendale. Quebec City is at the top of the list for possible relocation. A 2nd southern Ontario team is an option.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers chairman Ed Snider spoke about realignment. The Flyers and Penguins will remain in the same division. Eastern Conference clubs want traditional rivalries to remain. A realignment suggestion of having the Penguins and Flyers in different conferences didn’t get enough votes.
  • Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Brent Seabrook, who was injured over the weekend, traveled with the team to Vancouver. If Seabrook can’t go, Sean O’Donnell or Sami Lepisto would step in.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Talk that the Flames are swamped with interest in Rene Bourque is manufactured according to a source within the club. Flames GM Jay Feaster wouldn’t talk specifically about Bourque, but did say it’s getting harder to find trading partners.

“In the post-lockout world, it just isn’t about whether you like a player or not,” Feaster said.

“It’s also about the term (years) of the contract, the current cash requirement and the AAV (average annual value or cap hit), and that’s before you ever start talking about what you want or need in return for the player.”

  • BD Galiof via twitter: Galiof thinks the Islanders should make an addition by subtraction deal to send a message and to create room for more kids.

  • Eric Francis via twitter: The Flames have put Niklas Hagman on re-waivers. Have to wait until 10 am on Monday to find out if anyone has claimed him. (He has a $3 million cap hit, he can be had for $1.5 million).
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets forward Jeff Carter will return tonight. Goaltender Mark Dekanich suffered a groin injury and could be out weeks. GM Scott Howson said they are not actively pursuing a goaltender. Evgeni Nabokov is a name they might consider. Joe Yerdon of Pro Hockey Talk: The Jackets could also call the Panthers about Scott Clemmensen or pursue free agent Marty Turco.
  • Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets lines: Nash – Carter – Umberger; Prospal – Letestu – Johansen; Vermette – Pahlsson – Dorsett; Calvert – MacKenzie – Boll. Steve Mason will start in net with Allen York as his backup.
  • Ian Mendes via twitter: Craig Anderson will start in net for the Senators tonight. Brian Lee will replace David Rundblad on the blueline.

Richards could go tonight … Lidstom could return next season … Jovo skates … Morrison could be done for year

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards will take the morning skate with the Stars, and if all goes well, he’ll be in the lineup tonight. “You don’t want to get ahead of yourself, and I certainly know the process and what we have to go through, but as far as I’m concerned, I’m going to the arena tomorrow morning as a player,” Richards said [yesterday].
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Kulfan thinks that Lidstrom could win the Norris this year, and with the Red Wings still Stanley Cup contenders, he’s likely to return next season. Chris Osgood will be thinking about retiring after the season, but Kulfan also wouldn’t be surprised if he comes back for one more season.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators need to re-sign Craig Anderson to hold the fort until Robin Lehner is ready. Jared Cowen and David Rundblad could be ready to make the jump to the NHL next year, and that could leave Filip Kuba and Brian Lee on the outside. Lee has a salary at $875,000, so he could be trade bait. Kuba makes $3.7 million, and if they can’t move him, he could be bought out.
  • Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Ed Jovanovski skated for the 1st time on Tuesday since having orbital bone surgery. He was wearing a face shield, and he hopes to return before the end of the season. Martin Hanzel, Ray Whitney and Derek Morris all missed last night’s game with lower body injuries and are day-to-day.
  • Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets forward Derick Brassard has been cleared to return to the lineup, and is a game time decision. He’s had a hand injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the last 3 weeks.
  • Jess Myers of the Denver Post: John-Michael Liles left night’s game after playing just over 2 minutes. “I think it was a quad injury, a leg injury. We’ll know more in the morning. He wasn’t able to return,” said Avalanche coach Joe Sacco.
  • George Johnson of the Calgary Herald: Flames center Brendan Morrison told media he’s uncertain about his availability for the remainder of the season, playoffs included. “We still have some swelling in the knee and it’ll probably be another two or three weeks before we get a solid evaluation,’’ he said on Tuesday. “We’re optimistic that I can hopefully come back but we’re not going to know until everything settles down and we test it. We just have to wait and see.’’
  • Eric Stephens via twitter: The Ducks have signed Luca Sbisa for 4 years, and $8.7 million contract extension. He’ll carry a $2.175 million cap hit, with annual salaries of $1.2 million, $2 million, $2.6 million, and $2.9 million.
  • Katie Carrera via twitter: Both Backstrom and Neuvirth didn’t skate yesterday, more should be known about their injuries today.

  • Dan Rosen via twitter: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said he has permission to talk to Brad Richards about a contract extension. Steve Zipay via twitter: According to Brad Richards agent, they haven’t spoken to the Stars about a new contract. Mark Spector via twitter: From Nieuwendyk, “It’s always been my intention to re-sign Brad Richards. This sends a message …we’re doing everything possible to win games.”
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Will Jason Arnott be the next New Jersey Devil to be traded? Lines at practice today: 1. Ilya Kovalchuk-Travis Zajac-Nick Palmieri 2. Vladimir Zharkov-Adam Mair-Jason Arnott-Mattias Tedenby 3. Brian Rolston-Patrik Elias-Dainius Zubrus 4. Rod Pelley-Tim Sestito-David Clarkson
  • Michael Russo via twitter: Jose Theodore will start for the Wild tomorrow versus the Penguins. The Wild may have to recall a goalie, as there are concerns if Backstrom can start on Sunday.
  • Ian Mendes via twitter: Brian Lee and Jarkko Ruutu will both be in the Senators lineup, Matt Carkner will be a healthy scratch.
  • Frank Seravalli via twitter:Flyers defenseman Matt Walker is wearing a non-contract jersey today at practice, first time back since early December.

  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Patrick Kane has missed 4 games with an ankle injury suffered a setback today and is doubtful for Friday. Marian Hossa (lower body) and Viktor Stalberg (upper body) won’t be in the lineup on Friday either. Fernando Pisani should be in the lineup tomorrow, and Corey Crawford will be between the pipes.
  • Andy Strickland via True Hockey: St. Louis Blues defenseman Erik Johnson suffered a lower body injury last night after his left leg got tangled up with Pavel Datsyuk. He immediately grabbed his right knee. Johnson was able to leave the ice on his own, and will be re-evaluated today. Alex Pietrangelo is questionable for today’s game as well.
  • Wayne Scanlan via twitter: After 25 games as a healthy scratch, Senators defenseman Brian Lee will play in front of family and friends in Minnesota tonight.

Leafs shopping Beauchemin and Komisarek … Habs want to get bigger up front … Sens interested in Bieksa? Plus more injuries and rumors

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ray Emery is working hard on his rehab from hip surgery and is hope to be back this season. In the next couple weeks he’ll likely begin skating with a OHL, then work his way up to the AHL on a 25 game pro tryout before a team is likely to take a chance on him. The Dallas Stars lenders are unlikely to grant the team the money to re-sign Brad Richards. With the Rangers being the top team to have interest in Richards since the Leafs are falling out of playoff contention. The Atlanta Thrashers will start working on a long term contract for their captain, Andrew Ladd. The Phoenix Coyotes still haven’t talked to Ilya Bryzgalov about a contact extension. Matthew Hulsizer will meet with the Board of Governors tomorrow regarding his potential purchase of the Coyotes. Francois Beauchemin ($3.8-million cap hit) and  Mike Komisarek ($4.5-million cap hit) have been mentioned around the league, but their contracts makes them extremely difficult to move. The Montreal Canadiens would like to get bigger up front, and move Scott Gomez but his $7.34 cap hit makes it almost impossible (I still can’t believe Glen Sather was able to move him). Could the Habs be interested in Alex Kovalev? The Buffalo Sabres are trying to move captain Craig Rivet ($3.5 million) who’s been a healthy scratch 6 times this year.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch thinks that Kevin Bieksa would be a good fit with the Ottawa Senators, who have liked him for awhile. Garrioch thinks the St. Louis Blues should be interested in Brian Lee, he could be a reclamation project like Carlo Colaiacovo.
  • Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Pekka Rinne had his knee scoped and he’ll be out 2-4 weeks. “Obviously it’s a big loss. Peks is not only our No. 1 goaltender, but he’s been playing terrific. Unfortunately, when they did the MRI and found out what they found out, they went in and scoped him. It’s unfortunate because he’s playing so well and we were sort of getting healthy. It would be nice to have some health, and then he goes down.” The Preds will roll with Anders Lindback.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Chris Drury is likely a week to 10 days away from returning to the NY Rangers lineup. Drury can make passes but isn’t shooting yet. Vinny Prospal has begun skating without equipment, no ETA on his return yet.
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Joffery Lupul returns to Anaheim but as of yesterday afternoon he hadn’t been given clearance to return just yet. He’s expected to meet with them this weekend, and could be in the lineup this afternoon.

Markov to have season ending knee surgery … Sens working a big deal? Lupul to return Sunday? Sturm and Chiarelli have a plan

  • Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: Andrei Markov will face season ending knee surgery, a complete rebuild of his ACL. It is the same ACL that had surgery on 7 months ago. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday. Markov will be a UFA after this season. He’ll be placed on LTIR, so the Canadiens will have some extra cap room to bring in another defenseman if they choose.

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray is trying to trade Brian Lee, but he may also be working on a larger deal that could shake up the Sens. Teams are interested in some of their younger players, and 2 or 3 teams have shown interest in Brian Lee. The Vancouver Canucks could be one teams the Sens are talking to as GM Mike Gillis could be looking to make a deal as well. Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Even though Lee has cleared waivers, he remains with the team. They taped a ‘C’ on his sweater at practice yesterday, and he was skating with Peter Regin and Jason Spezza. Alfredsson was given a ‘maintenance day’.

  • Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald:

According to Sturm, Chiarelli mapped out a plan that would serve both their interests. Sturm agreed to waive the no trade clause for a say on where he might end up. The Kings were obviously on Sturm’s short list, and he refused to divulge other interested parties.

“A couple of days ago Peter explained to me the situation and asked me if I would move my no-trade clause,” Sturm said. “I thought about it overnight and told him OK and he told me the teams who were interested.

I told him I would waive my no trade and now I have to wait. The teams he told me are very good teams and a few of them I think would be a good fit.

  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: There have been more GMs and Scouts at Maple Leafs games recently. Dion Phaneuf could return on the Leafs western road trip begin on the 14th, so a they may move a defenseman for a forward.
  • James Mirtle via twitter: One GM “The teams that need something are the ones that aren’t winning all the time so you’re talking to teams like the Leafs.”
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: John MacLean’s time behind the NJ Devils bench may be limited. “Among the rumors swirling as the Devils prepared to face the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center was the return of Jacques Lemaire out of retirement or another stint for general manager Lou Lamoriello.” Ken Hitchcock and Bob Hartely have also been rumored. Martin Brodeur could skate today.
  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins forward Max Talbot had to be helped off the ice at practice after blocking a shot in the foot. There is a chance he’ll play tonight. Evgeni Malkin is day-to-day after suffering an unspecified injury on Thursday, he missed practice yesterday. The Penguins might call someone up for insurance.

Markov could be out a year after surgery … Flyers will need to make a roster move … Sens could trade Lee if… Funny goal celebration video

  • Tony Marinaro via twitter: A string of tweets regarding Montreal Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov’s injury:

“Andrei Markov Breaking News Again: Next week, Andrei Markov will undergo surgery to his right knee.”

“As I reported NOV 16: partial tear ACL graft rt knee, large radial tear lateral meniscus, bone contusions & mod. knee joint effusion.”

“The surgery will be performed in Birmingham, Alabama by Dr James Andrews, arguably the most renowned orthopedic surgeon in the world.”

“Dr James Andrews, has treated thousands of athletes. Andrei Markov, could be out as long as 1 year but is expected to make a full recovery.”

  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Markov’s agent, Don Meehan, say’s they’ll meet with the Canadiens doctor tomorrow to go over options, with surgery a possibility.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers are currently $700,000 under the salary cap, but with Michael Leighton and his $1.55 million cap number returning to the team in less than a week, they’ll have to make a move. Brian Boucher ($925,000) or Leighton (unlikely) could be sent to the AHL, Ian Laperriere ($1.67 million) or Matt Walker ($1.7 million) could be put on LTIR.
  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Several teams would be interested in trading for Ottawa Senators defenseman Brian Lee (cleared waivers) but they’d want the Sens to take back similar money, $875,000.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs forward Mike Brown has a badly broken finger after blocking a shot on Tuesday, and could be out 4 to 6 weeks if he requires surgery. John Mitchell will likely take Brown’s spot on the 4th line. Colby Armstrong practiced but could still be a few days away. JS Giguere will likely be back on Saturday.
  • Jeff Klein of the NY Times: Sean Avery will join the New York Rangers top line tonight with Marian Gaborik and Erik Christensen. Tortorella wants to take advantage of Avery’s speed and forechecking skills.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Bruins are under the salary cap and won’t have to move anyone for the moment. Dater thinks they won’t move Blake Wheeler when they have to clear some cap space.
  • From a High School game ….

Bergeron gets clearance, Habs and Jackets not interested … Chelios to the KHL? Sens still trying to move Lee? Prucha waived

  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: 23 year old Brian Lee has been a healthy scratch for the last 15 games, and his name comes up in  many Senators trade rumors. The Senators need scoring help, and a Lee trade could bring that in or allow them to recall Bobby Butler (AHL leading goal scorer).
  • Aaron Portzline via twitter: Portzline says the Blue Jackets have no interest in trading for Senators Dman, Brian Lee. Portzline also adds that the Jackets are not interested in Marc-Andre Bergeron.
  • James Mirtle via twitter: Maple Leafs leading scorer, Clarke MacArthur will be an RFA after the season. GM Brian Burke said he usually waits 40 or 50 games before he considers re-signing players.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Chris Chelios and the KHL’s Vityaz are in negotiations for Chelios’s service. Former NHLer Alexei Zhamnov told SovSport.

Parise visits doctors today … Ballard to return tonight? 10 teams looking for Dmen … New Leaf lines … Langkow’s return 50-50?

  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Zach Parise will see a doctor today to find out how serious his lower body injury is. Parise said he originally suffered the injury in his summer training while skating. “It’s been bothering me,” he told me. “I know exactly when I hurt it. I hurt it in August and it’s been bothering me. It hasn’t gone away. I kind of hurt it every game.”
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Keith Ballard made it through weekend practices with the Vancouver Canucks and could return Monday night. He will likely be a game time decision according to Vigneault. Dan Hamhuis skated for 20 minutes yesterday but still felt some discomfort in his foot. Ryan Parent left yesterday’s practice early with a groin strain.
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Daniel Briere has a hearing via conference call scheduled for today at 10am regarding his stick work to the head on Saturday night (video of incident can be seen in yesterday’s post). Briere has 8 instances since 2005 where he received a warning, fine or suspension according to John Shannon.
  • Bruce Garrioch in the Toronto Sun: There may be as many as 10 teams looking for defenseman, including the Senators, Lightning, Kings and Sharks. The Senators are dangling Brian Lee. The Ducks have said they’d trade Paul Mara. The Oilers have Sheldon Souray and his broken hand. Kevin Bieksa will likely become available by the Canucks at some point when their defensive corps gets healthy. The city of Glendale and Matthew Hulsizer are still working on the details of the lease. Glendale will cover some of the losses from the Coyotes but only if he won’t move the team. If he moves the team within 5 years, they’ll want their money back. The Dallas Stars are averaging under 14,000 fans a game and may have to deal Brad Richards before the deadline; “They might have to do it to save cash, but that just doesn’t make sense to me,” said one league executive. “They’ve got a chance to have a pretty good team. They should be trying to add, not subtract.” The New Jersey Devils have been fielding calls regarding Patrick Elias, but he has a no-movement clause with 2 years left on his contract and would likely want to stay with the Devils. The Phoenix Coyotes are trying to move Petr Prucha and his $1.1 million salary.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: It may be 50-50 chance that Calgary Flames center Daymond Langkow is able to return from a neck injury he sustained last year. He was shut down last week after feeling numbness below the waist during an intensive workout.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs are looking for some more scoring from the lineup, have juggled the lines yesterday at practice. Mike Brown – Kris Versteeg – Tim Brent, Luca Caputi – Phil Kessel – Tyler Bozak, Mikhail  and Nikolai Kulemin – Clarke MacArthur – Grabovski, and Fredrik Sjostrom  – Colton Orr – Christian Hanson.
  • Eric Francis in the Toronto Sun: The Calgary Flames could move Ian White at some point this season. White will be a UFA at season’s end, with the signing of Mark Giordano to a long term deal and the emergence of TJ Brodie, White could be expendable if they are out of the playoff race.
  • Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Carlo Colaiacovo’s return to the Blues lineup is not known after taking a hit from Jordan Tootoo last week. He’s still experience neck spasms and will have to undergo further tests.

Sens still trying to make a deal, tight against the cap … Boychuk out a month … Kovalchuk plays, scores only goal … plus more

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray hasn’t been able to find a trade partner yet in his attempt to shake up his team. They are tight against the salary cap, which could be marking it harder to pull off a deal. Capgeek is showing that they are only $75,000 under the cap. The Sens are trying to move Brian Lee  and his $875,000 salary since the summer, but he hasn’t played well. Teams are willing to take Nick Foligno or Erik Karlsson, but Murray isn’t interested in moving them. Filip Kuba should be practicing with the team early this week.
  • Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald: Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk will be out for about a month after a ‘slight’ fracture in his left forearm. It won’t require surgery. Boychuk took a slash from Brandon Dubinsky.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils rank last in scoring and in points, and have benched their $100 million man. Everson thinks they need to stop juggling their lines and let them find a way to work together. Kovalchuk scored the teams only goal last night after his one game banishment to the press box. Kovalchuk added this about his healthy scratch,”The coach decided to give me a little rest and that’s about it. That’s his decision. It’s going to stay between me and him. I’m just a player so I’m going to show up so I can play.”
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Other reactions about Kovalchuk’s first game back.“I’m hungry night when I’m playing because that’s my job and we’re all professionals,” Kovalchuk said. “We all have to realize when we step on the ice, you have to do your best.”“I thought Kovy was fine,” Maclean said. “He played hard, skated hard. He got a goal there and some other chances.” “He was playing with some energy,” Langenbrunner said. “He’s as frustrated as anybody with the way things have gone and he wants to do his part to get us going back in the right direction. He did that scoring a goal again. He has a knack for putting himself in those positions and it was a great pass by (Dainius Zubrus). We’re going to need more of that, just battle and get pucks to the net. That was all created by cycling pucks off the net.”
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: RW Aaron Asham will likely be healthy enough to go on Wednesday. LW Eric Tangardi doesn’t have to clear waivers so he could be sent down. Zbynek Michalek had a full practice yesterday. Dman Andrew Hutchinson could also be sent down, as the Pens have 8 defenseman practicing.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks winger Dan Sexton has a broken nose after taking a shot in the face from Ruslan Salei on Saturday night. It’s not known yet how long Sexton will be out. He could return to Anaheim today for further tests.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars are still unsure if Jamie Benn is better served as a winger or a centerman. The last 2 games he’s played on the wing with Steve Ott and Ton Wandell. Last year was the first year he’s ever played center. Marc Crawford said it’s a game-by-game decision on where he plays.
