Coaches on the Hotseat … Regier may need to shakeup Sabres … Semin looking for lucrative long-term deal … Audio and Video of Thornton hit
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on November 5th, 2010
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres are off to a 3-8-2 start, GM Darcy Regier has said he doesn’t want to fire coach Lindy Ruff, so it might be roster moves are needed to shake the team up. He’s been working the phones, but not liking the offers. He doesn’t want to give players away, such as Tim Connolly. Connolly is taking heat from fans, and writer Gleason for his turnovers/bad decision making.
- Adrian Dater on Versus: Dater runs through 5 coaches who could be on the Hotseat. Ron Wilson: if the Leafs are out of it at some point this year, it could be Wilson’s last year. Lindy Ruff and Randy Carlyle: both of their GM’s have said their jobs are safe for now. Scott Gordon: after a good start, the Islanders have lost 5 in a row. Todd Richards: he’s under some pressure in Minnesota to win now.
- Cory Masisak of CSN Washington: Alexander Semin signed a 1 year, $6 million deal in the off-season, and will be looking to cash in on a lucrative long-term deal. He’s a UFA at seasons end, the Capitals can’t negotiate with him until after January 1st. Can Washington afford him? They have $36 million committed to 13 players next year.
“I really don’t think [Semin] is focused too much on that,” Gandler said. “From the conversations I’ve had with him, he would rather just play hockey. Obviously it is important and it was important last year. This year the reason Alexander signed a one-year deal was not to become an unrestricted free agent necessarily. It was part of the strategy but only because we didn’t think he could get a long-term deal at the money we thought he should get.”
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Atlanta Thrashers lost 3-0 last night in front of only 8,461 fans, their lowest total ever, 2nd record low in the last 15 days.
- Chris Vivlamore via twitter: Scouts from Avs, Sens, Leafs, Coyotes, Canucks, Blackhawks, Lightning, Stars were at the Thrashers-Blue Jackets game. I wonder if they were included in last night’s record low attendance in Atlanta.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Johan Franzen was on the ice yesterday for the Red Wings practice, but figures to be ready for tonight.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Minnesota Wild forward Guillaume Latendresse is now week-to-week with a groin injury.
- Rich Chere via twitter: Zach Parise will be put on IR in the next couple days. Brian Rolston will practice on either Sunday or Monday.
- Globe and Mail Audio: Eric Duhatschek, James Mirtle, and Darren Yourk discuss the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, and if Jarome Iginla could get traded.
- Puck Daddy Radio: Question of the Day….“Who is the best hitter in the NHL”? (05:00) Sidney Crosby drops the gloves (07:45) Cal Clutterbuck, Minnesota Wild RW (10:30) Bobby Holik (24:00) Puck Headlines (37:30)
- Fan 590 Audio: OHL Commissioner David Branch on Prime Time Sports discuss concussions and the overall safety in the game of hockey.
- Fan 590 Audio: Glen Healy on Prime Time Sports discussing the good and the bad in the hockey world.
- Joe Thornton blindsided David Perron last night, NHL will likely review. If the league is serious about blindsided hits, it will give Thornton a suspension, maybe 2 games. I don’t necessarily think it was a ’2 game’ hit, maybe a 1 game suspension, but it could send a message that all players can get suspended, even the stars.
Brodeur leaves game … Volchenkov returns Friday, Rolston close … Will Parise want to re-sign with Devils? 2 coaches safe for now … Backes-Blues close?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 4th, 2010
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Martin Brodeur left last night game in the 2nd period after taking a Patrick Kane shot in the right elbow. Brodeur thinks he’ll be able to go on Friday against the Rangers. “I knew exactly what was wrong,” he said. “They just wanted to do an X-ray because they have the machine here…But there’s no issue there. It’s just a question of swelling and getting a little strength back in it.”
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Anton Volchenkov is expected to return on Friday from his broken nose and stiff neck.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Brian Rolston is close to returning to practice according to GM Lou Lamoriello.
- John Buccigross of ESPN: Buccigross wonders if the Devils struggles and cap fallout will impact whether Zach Parise will want to re-sign with the team long-term. Parise is a RFA not a UFA at seasons end, “so he would either have to inform the Devils he has no intention of signing long term with them and force a trade or politely decline all contract offers until the Devils get the picture.”
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Tomas Kaberle rumors are picking up again, but agent Rick Curran said “There’s no reason for any talk to commence. Nothing has changed from our standpoint. So whatever the media has initiated and tried … I can assure you it’s certainly not coming from me and I know it’s not coming from Tomas. … My understanding of the situation is that unless we were to initiate conversation, then there shouldn’t be one.” The loss of Dion Phaneuf for 4-6 weeks makes Kaberle even more valuable to the Maple Leafs. The Buffalo Sabres are off to a slow start, but GM Darcy Regier will continue to be patient. Regier is talking to other teams, and he doesn’t think getting rid of coach Lindy Ruff is an option at the moment. Ducks GM Bob Murray said that coach Randy Carlyle’s job is safe. Contract talks between the Phoenix Coyotes and upcoming UFAs, Ilya Bryzgalov and Ed Jovanovski, are on hold until the team is officially sold. If a deal was present that was “phenomenal” for the team, they would do it.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: David Backes recently turned down a contract offer from the St. Louis Blues, but they are not that far apart.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Joffery Lupul skated with his Duck teammates at yesterday’s morning skate. Lupul was on for a light skate, and is not taking contact, but it was a good first step for him as he continues to recover from back issues and infections. He’ll continue to take antibiotics and his last blood test didn’t show any further infection. Carlyle said he won’t be “on the radar until somewhere around Thanksgiving.”
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: The Thrashers were criticized when they said that Dustin Byfuglien would be playing on the blue line. Well, it is a move that has worked for them, as he’s recorded 10 points in 11 games. His defensive game is improving. Some of his success may stem from the the fact that he asked to play defense, he’s getting more ice time and is having success jumping into the play with more open room.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: The Anaheim Ducks haven’t allowed less than 2 goals in a game this year. They are 5-7-1, tied for 2nd last in the Western Conference.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Edmonton Oilers have hired Kimberley Amirault, a sports psychologist. She has worked with the Rangers, Blue Jackets, Knicks and Canadian Olympic teams.
Souray hurts hand in AHL scrap … Bruins interested in Yandle, others … New Jersey Devils notes … plus lots of other updates
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on October 26th, 2010
- Ryan Rishaug via twitter: Sheldon Souray will be out for 2 weeks after hurting his hand in a fight. Video at bottom of post, about 40 seconds in..
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Dater thinks the Colorado Avalanche could be a possible trade partner for the Boston Bruins as they could use some help on defense and have the lowest payroll. Joe Haggerty thinks the Bruins could be interested in Phoenix Coyotes prospects such as Mikkel Boedker and Viktor Tikhonov. The Bruins also like some Coyotes roster players, such as Keith Yandle. Source just told Jimmy Murphy that Yandle is available, and the Bruins are interested.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Ilya Kovalchuk prefers to play left wing, and may have “chuffed” at playing on the right side.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Anton Volchenkov has skated the last couple days. Volchenkov could join the team for tomorrow’s game, he was originally set to return on Nov. 5th. Brian Rolston has begun light skating after his sports hernia surgery. Bryce Salvador is not cleared for exercising yet. Mark Fraser is also not allowed to exercise yet.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks have begun contract extension talks with Christian Ehrhoff.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Looks like Mike Smith will be in the net for the Lightning tomorrow against the Penguins. Erlendsson also reports it’s unlikely that Gagne and Moore will playing.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: Marian Gaborik’s injured left shoulder is progressing, no timetable is set, hopes to start skating next week.
- Chris Vivlamore via twitter: The Atlanta Thrashers will be without Bogosian and Meyer against the Rangers, will need to recall someone.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Scott Clemmensen will be in net for the Florida Panthers tonight against the Leafs.
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Capitals defenseman Tom Poti won’t travel with the team to Carolina, could join the team later this week.
Stumbling block for Coyotes sale … Leclaire injured … Fraser out 4-6 weeks … Lydman game time decision
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 15th, 2010
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer has an agreement in principle with the City of Glendale which could give him $100 million from parking, taxes and property levies to help cover losses, on a multi-year lease. Despite this positive news for Coyotes fans in Phoenix, the bad news follows in that he wants a big discount on the $165 million purchase price. The NHL bought the team for $140 million. They have until Dec. 31st to find local buyer or the team could be up for relocation. The NHL already has bid from Winnipeg based True North Sports and Entertainment Ltd. for at least $165 million. An NHL governor has said that Hulsizer was told by Gary Bettman that the team would not be sold for less than what the team has cost the league. They may have put up $175 million, with the City of Glendale kicking in $25 million. According to a report in the Arizona Republic, the City of Glendale owes a total of $500 million for sports facilities it’s built, $180 for the Jobing.com arena.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators lone bright spot this season is out with a lower-body injury. Pascal Leclaire last just over 2 minutes into the game last night, suffering the injury during a scrum. The severity of the injury is unknown at the moment. Brian Elliot would be starter if Leclaire is out, Robin Lehner may get the call to back him up as Mike Brodeur is out with an injury.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record: The New Jersey Devils have lost defenseman Mark Fraser for 4-6 weeks after a pin was inserted into his fractured right hand. No decision has been made yet if he’ll be placed on IR. Anton Volchenkov will miss tonight’s game against the Avalanche, but they will not say if he’s out tomorrow night or not. Brian Rolston’s hernia surgery was successful, he’ll be out 4-6 weeks.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: It won’t be known probably until after the pre-game warmup if Anaheim Ducks Dman, Toni Lydman, will make his season debut. Lydman hasn’t played a game since last April, and missed all of training camp. Andreas Lilja is still waiting to get his work visa.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Colorado Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson will be a UFA at seasons end, and Dater wonders if he’d take a ‘hometown’ discount on an extension. The Avs were a team that offered Anderson a chance to be a #1 goalie. He could get $4.5 million a year offer if he put played like he did last year. If Anderson and Avs can’t get a deal done, they can not left him go for nothing.
- Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: NY Islanders rookie Nino Niederreiter is making his case to stay with the club beyond 9 games. He’ll play is 4th game tonight, the 9th game would be Oct. 27th. Niederreiter scored his 1st NHL goal on Tuesday. “He’s got a good head on his shoulders,” [coach] Gordon said. “I think he’s a focused individual. He doesn’t just take anything for granted. He works at things. He’s a good listener. Those are the things that, as a coach, you can’t take for granted because not every 18-year-old is like that.”
- Jeff Klein of the NY Times: NY Rangers captain Chris Drury will return to the lineup tonight against the Maple Leafs, and will likely replace Erik Christensen (groin) centering Marian Gaborik and Alex Frolov. Matt Gilroy will make his season debut replacing Mike Sauer.
Rolston to LTIR … Varlamov to return this weekend … Orpik, Bogosian day-to-day
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on October 14th, 2010
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergeron Record: The New Jersey Devils caught some salary relief at the expense of Brian Rolston. Rolston will be out 4-6 weeks with a sports hernia that will require surgery, he’s been placed on LTIR. His $5,062,500 cap hit won’t count against the teams cap number while he’s out. They’ll now be able to dress 20 players, they went with 16 last night. Lou Lamoriello also said that Anton Volchenkov probably won’t be ready this weekend after suffering a broken nose and a stiff neck.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Semyon Varlamov will probably be in the Capitals lineup on Saturday as he’s recovering from an undisclosed injury. He’s deemed himself 100% and ready to go. Marcus Johansson (foot) is week-to-week after blocking a shot. Tom Poti and Matt Bradley are day-to-day.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Brooks Orpik missed last night’s game against the Maple Leafs, his 2nd in a row, and is day-to-day with a groin strain. He should be ready to go soon though. Zbynek Michalek left Monday’s game with an apparent shoulder injury, with the team giving no hint as to the severity of it. Bill Guerin was in Pittsburgh to take care of a few things in the city, took in the game with Mario Lemieux. Was he also looking for a contract?
- James Gordon of Ottawa Citizen: Daniel Alfredsson left Monday’s game with a lower-body injury, will be ready to for tonight’s game against the Hurricanes. Brian Elliot will either start tonight or on Saturday against the Canadiens.
- Michael Russo via twitter: The Minnesota Wild will make a decision this morning if Andrew Brunette is ready to go or if they’ll need to call up someone.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Zach Bogosian is day-to-day with a shoulder injury.
Pavelec released from hospital … Varlamov to return this week? No talks yet between Kaberle-Leafs plus more
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 11th, 2010
Merry Turkey to our Canadian readers, Happy Columbus Day to our American readers.
- Allan Walsh via twitter: Ondrej Pavelec was released from hospital yesterday and is back to home. Walsh thinks he’ll be “back in action soon”.
- Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: Semyon Varlamov who’s out with a groin injury hopes to return later this week.
- Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Tomas Kaberle and Brian Burke have yet to meet on a contract extension, with Burke and Kaberle’s agent, Rick Curran, agreeing to let things wait for a bit. A deal may come down to money, Kaberle will likely looking for a raise from this $4.25 million. The Leafs already have a lot of cash tied up in their defensive corps. Kaberle,
“I haven’t talked to Brian since the start of the season,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m not worried about it right now. I’m just going to worry about the games coming up, especially the first month of the season. It always shows the way the team is going to play. We have to be at least .500 to have a chance to go into the playoffs when the real season starts.”
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Zdeno Chara’s new contract (7 years, $45.5 million) probably won’t be used as a comparable for Predators defenseman Shea Weber. Better comparables would be Dion Phaneuf (6 years, $39 million) or Jay Bouwmeester (5 years, $33.4 million).
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: It looks like 2010 1st round pick by the Carolina Hurricanes, Jeff Skinner, will remain with the club for the rest of the season.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Andres Lilja has signed with the Anaheim Ducks. An agreement was reached Saturday night, and Lilja is flying to Anaheim from Sweden.
- Andy Stickland via twitter: St. Louis Blues forward Cam Janssen will miss 2 weeks with a concussion and sternum injury.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson poor play has found himself down the 3rd pairing and could find himself in the AHL if his game doesn’t improve.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello might have to free up some cap space depending on the severity of the injuries to Brian Rolston and Anton Volchenkov. Lamoriello also wouldn’t say if they’ll appeal the loss of their 1st round pick and $3 million fine.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Mark Giordano and the Calgary Flames started contract talks last year, but they are no closer to a deal. He’s said how much he enjoys playing in Calgary, but how much the Flames would offer and how much he might be able to get on the open market might be a big difference. Giordano may also not want to rush to a decision with the Flames until he sees what direction the team may be going in.
Ondrej Pavelec talks with AJC … Thornton-Sharks talking extension … Chara contract breakdown … Injury notes from last night
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 10th, 2010
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: (exclusive interview with Ondrej Pavelec) After Atlanta Thrashers goalie Pavelec awoke in the ambulance after collapsing 2:25 minutes into Friday game with no feeling in his legs and not remembering playing more than 2 minutes. “I would like to tell you [what happened],” Pavelec told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an exclusive interview Saturday. “The last thing I remember was the lights going on after the [national] anthem. I don’t remember anything until I woke up in the ambulance and saw the doctor looking at me.” He underwent full body MRI exams yesterday and will have more test today, with the hope of being released later in the day. I could do more highlights of the article but I recommend reading the article. The Thrashers have recalled Drew MacIntyre to backup Chris Mason while Ondrej Pavelec is out.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Joe Thornton should have a contract extension done with the San Jose Sharks in the next couple weeks. Brad Richards would become really the only star centerman available next summer, that’s saying he doesn’t get a deal done during the season (nothing will happen on that front until the team is sold). Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara’s contract breakdown; 2011-12: $8.5 million 2012-13: $6 million 2013-14: $8 million 2014-15: $7 million 2015-16: $7 million 2016-17: $5 million 2017-18: $4 million. Shea Weber is a year away from becoming a UFA, a RFA after this season, but the Nashville Predators have already started communicating with him their vision in hopes of locking him up long-term.
There are three clear scenarios here:
1. He signs an extension and life is good in Music City.
2. He only does a one-year deal to bridge himself to his UFA year and he can do this by going to salary arbitration next summer.
3. The Preds get nervous they can’t sign him to a long-term extension and put him on the trade block over the summer.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Daniel Alfredsson will play out the remaining 3 years of his contract and hasn’t ruled out the possibility of moving to the front-office afterwards.
- Deb Kaufman Placey via twitter: John Tavares will be re-evaluated on Monday from a mild concussion he suffered in last night’s game.
- New Jersey Devils via twitter: Anton Volchenkov suffered a broken nose after taking a Nicklas Backstrom shot to the face. Tom Gulitti via twitter: Brian Rolston suffered a lower-body injury last night.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Pekka Rinne is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
- John Haggerty via twitter: Tim Thomas starting for the Bruins today. Mark Recchi is skating with Seguin. Caron is with Bergeron and Wheeler.
- John Shannon via twitter: IF a sale gets done for the Phoenix Coyotes, the arena deal will completed at the same time.
- Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove: Ron MacLean, Eric Francis, Pierre LeBrun & Mike Milbury
More on Salvador and possible options for the Devils … Toni Lydman skates with Ducks … Backup in Nashville settled
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Rumors on October 1st, 2010
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Travis Zajac’s name continues to float around. Two GM’s think that the New Jersey Devils will carry 20 or 21 players on their roster. Teams must dress 20 players for each game. Keeping 21 players could save them $1 million, 20 players $1.5 million. If they keep 21, including the injured Bryce Salvador (can’t really do anything with Salvador while he’s injured), they would have to get rid of $2.5 million in salary.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils GM Lou Lamoirello says that Salvador has a concussion and will out indefinitely. No decision has been made if he’ll be placed on LTIR.
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Doesn’t see anyone trading for Brian Rolston. Allen also doesn’t think Dustin Byfuglien will stay on defense for the entire season. Magnus Paajarvi could outscore Taylor Hall this year. The Predators could look to sign a veteran goalie.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Toni Lydman was on the ice for his first on-ice workout with the Anaheim Ducks. Lydman had an episode of double vision almost a month ago and has missed all of training while they try to figure out what caused it, which they haven’t been able to pin-point as of yet.
- Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Mark Dekanich was assigned to Milwaukee, which means that Andres Lindback won the backup job in Nashville.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Martin Brodeur will 40 years old in 2 years when his contract expires.
“I don’t know if it’s going to be that’s all after this,” he told me today. “I plan the long-range (with) what I have (with his contract) and that’s what I’m focusing on, to be as good as I can be for those two years and have that goal. We’ll see how I feel next year. Next year, in the middle of the season, that’s when you’re going to start thinking about it more because there’s a lot of things that could happen with the NHL and the NHLPA. That (the end of the CBA) comes right after that season. So, who knows? I can’t just commit myself and then have a lockout or if there’s a lockout (for a full year), do I go back the year after?”
Hawks expensive rings … C. Clark available … No love for Rolston? Salvador out? Blues Blueline Battle and more
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 30th, 2010
- Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup Rings: Picture from Sean Leahy of Rocky Wirtz’s ring. Chris Kuc tweets “$30,000, 14-carat white gold, 404 diamonds & gemstones totaling apprx. 8 carats.”
- Mark Spector via twitter: RW Chris Clark of the Columbus Blue Jackets could available. Spector wonders if: in a Souray deal? some added grit in Vancouver? or a truculent American for the Leafs? Clark has a cap hit of $2.633,333, salary of $2.5 million.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: There are no suggestions that there is a team willing to trade for Brian Rolston’s and his $5.1 million contract. Coach John MacLean says that Bryce Salvador is “fine” after crashing into the boards. The Devils may end up having to waive and demote players to get under the cap.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Salvador underwent ear tests yesterday. He’s missed 9 games in the past because of ear problems. Injured players are not allowed to be waived.
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: If Bryce Salvador’s injury is long-term, the salary cap issues are not as serious for the New Jersey Devils.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Competition on the St. Louis Blues blueline is heating up. Ian Cole has outplayed Alex Pietrangelo, Oystrick and Nikitin are still in the battle.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: During Tuesday’s pre-season game, Cody Hodgson started on the 2nd, and ended up on the 4th. It may becoming more apparent that Hodgson needs time to recover from his back injury and gain some pro experience in the minors.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Marc Savard won’t travel with the team to Europe. From GM Peter Chiarelli,
“He spent the whole time at the team-building (in Vermont Monday and Tuesday). I spoke to him (yesterday) morning, and he’s going to see his doctors, and he’s going to work up his physical exertion test.
“He’s getting better. He’s feeling a lot better. We just have to make sure we do all the proper things – get through the exertion and the impact and the conditioning. He’s still a ways away.”
- Corey Masisak via twitter: Michael Nylander has been loaned to Rochester in the AHL.
- John Seigel via twitter: Luke Schenn has a back injury, but the extent isn’t known at this moment.
- Kukla’s Korner via twitter: (re-tweeted) Andres Lilja is close to signing with the San Jose Sharks according to Gunnar N.

- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: No date is set for player reps to vote on the hiring of Donald Fehr according to Bruins rep Mark Stuart.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Zdeno Chara said there is nothing new to report on his possible contract extension, felt the Kovalchuk stalled negotiations. Joe Haggerty via twitter also noted that Chara said the NHL and NHLPA negotiations put a pause on his negotiations.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: According to Brian Rolston’s agent, the Devils have asked Rolston to waive his no-trade clause, haven’t brought it up.
- Howard Berger via twitter: Ron Wilson said that “Giguere is No. 1 going into training camp.”

Life after the Kovalchuk signing … Other pieces will begin to fall
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 20th, 2010
Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Don’t expect a Tomas Kaberle trade this week as GM Brian Burke has gone fishing for the week. He did have this to say before he left, “The number of offers are up to six but we’re not in a position where we think any of them are good enough,” said Burke. “We’re still in a holding pattern.” The Lightning at one point were dangling Ryan Malone. Burke would not comment on Marc Savard. If he is interested, he’ll most likely wait until after Kaberle is traded as he may not need a center of Savard’s caliber.
Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: The LA Kings may come calling the Maple Leafs for puck moving Dman Tomas Kaberle, to play along side Drew Doughty. Longley throws out the idea of Brayden Schenn coming back to Toronto.
Randy Youngman of the OC Register: The Ducks and Bobby Ryan are fine with $5 million a year, but Ryan wants less term than the 5 years the Ducks are proposing. Ryan would like 3 years, but that would mean his contract would expire at the same time as Perry’s and Getzlaf’s. 3 years would also leave Ryan as an RFA, 4 years he would be a UFA.
NHLSourcesSay via twitter: Leafs were interested in Bobby Ryan, but Ducks have told all teams they want to sign him.
Dave Gross of the Vancouver Province: Gross mentions players who the Devils could possibly trade to get under the cap: Brian Rolston, 2 years at $5 million. Travis Zajac is at $3.89 million season (I doubt they’d move him, would be a last resort). Dainius Zubrus makes $3.4 million the next 3 seasons. Colin White will make $3 million the next 2 years. Bryce Salvador will make $2.9 million the next 2 years.
EJ Hradek via Twitter: Jamie Langenbrunner could be trade bait for the Devils. He’s at $2.8 million and a no-trade clause, but he should get some interest.
Jeff Marek via twitter: There could be a new style of play in New Jersey next season, more ‘up-tempo’, less trap.
Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman has told Patrick Sharp that “he’s not going anywhere.” They are still working on Antti Niemi, no solution, but have ideas.
Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Mike Modano will start skating on August 5th, and won’t make a decision to return or not before that.
Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Alexander Frolov has begun contract talks with KHL’s Salavat Yulaef.
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: After the seeing what the Flyers got for Simon Gagne (Matt Walker and a 4th), the Oilers may not expect to get much back for Sheldon Souray. There’s not a big market for Souray, with his $5.4 million cap hit for the next 2 years, and his health concerns. The Oilers may look to teams who are sitting around the salary cap floor: Atlanta, NY Islanders, Colorado, and St. Louis. They may ask the Oilers to throw in a young player or pick to take back the salary.
John Boruk via Twitter: Aaron Asham could be signed by the end of the week, Philly a possibility.
The Kovalchuk Fallout: Devils need to move salary … Kaberle and Gagne rumors to heat up
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Rumors on July 19th, 2010
2:27 PM: Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi may take a serious look at Marc Savard now.
12:58 PM:
EJ Hradek via twitter: Casualties of Kovalchuk in NJ could be Dainius Zubrus ($3.4 million per, 3 years) and Bryce Salvador ($2.9 million per, 2 years).
Andy Strickland via twitter: Brian Rolston ($5 million per, 2 years) is a strong candidate to be moved.
Craig Custance via twitter: Market for Tomas Kaberle to loosen up with Kovalchuk signed, Maple Leafs have up to 6 offers for him.
Andy Strickland via twitter: Burke has until August 15th to move Kaberle, so there is no urgency on his part.
NHL Sources Say via twitter: Kings will now be focussing on Simon Gagne. Williams could be heading the other way, could happen today.
Are the Kings interested in Gagne and others? Modano has 4 options … Not much going on for Frolov
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 6th, 2010
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: One report is saying the Los Angeles Kings are out of the running for Simon Gagne, and another says they are still interested. Things were quiet involving Tomas Kaberle over the weekend, but should pick up this week.
Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Elliott wonders how the Kings can become more attractive to free agents. Drew Doughty, Jack Johnson and Wayne Simmonds will be free agents soon, and will they want to re-sign with a team that can’t draw top free agents? The Kings may have to go the trade route to fill some holes in their roster. If the Devils sign Kovalchuk, they’ll have to clear out some salary. Brian Rolston could be available, but he’s 37 and has a $5.062 cap hit. Tomas Kaberle is an option but the Leafs probably want prospects and picks (nope … they’d like a top 6 forward, maybe a Wayne Simmonds or Dustin Brown). The Kings like Simon Gagne, and the Flames may deal Robyn Regehr. Marc Savard could fit but the Kings may not be on the 5 team list Savard has.
Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Alexander Frolov hasn’t received much interest, other than the Rangers doing some brief tire kicking.
Jeremy Rutherford via Twitter: A “good-faith” move by Jaroslav Halak by not filing for salary arbitration.
Dmitry Chesnokov via Twitter: Evgeni Nabokov couldn’t agree on a contract with SKA St. Petersburgh.
Ansar Khan of MLive: The Detroit Red Wings are close to signing 3 of their restricted free agents to 1 year contracts: Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller and Derek Meech. GM Ken Holland isn’t close to signing Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm, both could get long-term deals later on in the summer though.
John Shannon via Twitter: The Detroit Red Wings and 3 other teams are interested in Mike Modano.
David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune: Mike Modano hasn’t heard from the Chicago Blackhawks, but they could be an option for him as they are looking for some 3rd/4th line depth (cost friendly depth). “I’d like to see what kind of wiggle room they have left under the salary cap, if they can fill that third- or fourth-line void and see how I would fit in with those guys,” said Modano. “They have a great nucleus of kids. So there is a lot of interest there. Obviously, coming off the type of year they’ve had there’s a lot of excitement for anybody who has Chicago on their list of options.”
Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Blake Wheeler filed for arbitration yesterday, but Wheeler’s agent plans on working hard to get a deal done. They haven’t had much discussion with GM Peter Chiarelli as he’s been busy with the draft and free agency. Mark Stuart didn’t file for arbitration as he and Bruins are close to a 1-year extension. Boston re-signed both Nathan McIver and Nolan Schaefer.
Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski filed for salary arbitration yesterday, but after the meeting his agent and GM Bob Murray last week, they appear to be on the “same page”. More discussions should take place before their arbitration meeting which would be between July 20th and August 5th.
