Ducks GM on a scouting trip … Blue Jackets to move some UFAs … Brodeur may not retire … Vanek has UBI or food poisoning or flu … Karlsson a late scratch
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 11th, 2012
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Ducks GM Bob Murray will have to decide by the trade deadline if this year is just a “hiccup or if there’s something fundamentally wrong with the core of the team.” Coach Bruce Boudreau doesn’t think they need a total blowup. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson: “At this point, we anticipate trading away some of our players, particularly the unrestricted ones.” Their UFAs are Kristian Huselius, Sammy Pahlsson, Vinny Prospal and Radek Martinek.
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Ducks GM Bob Murray is going on a scouting trip. Elliott was told that nothing is going on trade-wise for the Ducks at the moment, but the rumors will definitely be flying.
- Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: The 39 year old Martin Brodeur may not be thinking of retirement just yet.
“It’s funny, because I’ve asked a lot of players, and a lot of who are enjoying their retirement, but you know what? They all say they wish they could have maybe played another season. That makes me think, maybe I can stick around, if they still want me. So we’ll see.”
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres winger Thomas Vanek left last night’s game after taking a hit from Dion Phaneuf. The Sabres initially said it was an upper-body injury but later …
“He’s either got food poisoning, some type of virus, flu,” Ruff said after the game. “He wasn’t feeling well in warm-up. … If you watch his first three shifts, you could tell. That was part of the issue. That line didn’t get anything going. He had nothing. He emptied his tank in between periods and couldn’t go.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars center Mike Ribeiro has some knee issues that he wants to play through.
“He may fly in tomorrow,” Gulutzan added. “He has an MCL (tear) there, but there’s an old MCL (scar) there, so that pollutes the water (of the MRI) of what’s actually there. He has it and he’s limping around, but Ribs thinks he can play. But for his sake, we have to make sure that he’s stable enough and doesn’t get an injury there. He really wanted to come on the trip, we had to make him stay at home.”
- Alan Robinson of NHL.com: Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson was scratched just before game time last night due to an upper-body injury. Bruce Garrioch via twitter: An update will come on Karlsson’s status this morning at practice.
- Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Avs forward Matt Duchene is walking around fine, and is probable to return later this month. He’s been out since Dec. 29th with a knee injury.
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: Panthers goalie Jacob Markstrom will have minor knee surgery today. If it ends up being just a ‘scope,’ then it will be at least 3-4 weeks. This will be Markstrom’s 2nd surgery on his knee in the last 10 months. Jose Theodore could practice later this week.
- Mike Heika via twitter: The Stars have put Philip Larsen on the IR.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: There were only 3 scouts at the Leafs – Sabres game last night: Oilers, Flyers and Blues.
Anaheim Ducks rumors involving Getzlaf, Ryan and others … Leafs would have to be interested in Getzlaf
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 5th, 2012
12:40 PM:
- Damien Cox via twitter: “Problem with ANA rumblings is GM Murray seems to say one thing publicly, but something very different to other teams.”
- David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Staples thinks the Oilers should look at Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, more Getzlaf than Perry. He doesn’t think the Ducks would take Ales Hemsky, Sam Gagner and a few prospects. Would the Oilers throw in “Linus Omark or a Magnus Paajarvi or a Jeff Petry or a Teemu Hartikainen or a few of them?” Staples thinks a Cam Fowler for Sam Gagner deal might make sense for either team, but they should look for “a finished product, not a work in progress.” The Oilers could look to pick up a Matt Smaby or Mark Fraser as a stopgap defenseman from the Ducks.
- Kevin Paul Dupont via twitter: Dupont figured it would be Bobby Ryan out of Anaheim before Ryan Getzlaf. Idea of moving Getzlaf and leaving Perry kind of feels like the Canucks trading one of the Sedins.
- Luke DeCock via twitter: DeCock doesn’t see a fit as the Hurricanes ‘core players’ include Staal, Ward, Skinner, maybe Sutter/Faulk. See what DeCock was referring to below.
- BD Gallof via twitter: For Islanders fans thinking Perry or Getzlaf, think Moulson or Okposo, Niederreiter or Strome, plus a prospect and draft pick. The price for established players is costly. Whatever players are on the block, Islanders fans should realize they are not in that market.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau has to be the biggest loser in the Ducks trade talk as he now has to motivate 21 of 23 players who are now traded bait.
8:23 AM:
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Ducks GM Bob Murray isn’t ready to give up on this season just yet.
“At this point, no,” Murray said Wednesday before the Ducks’ home game against San Jose. “I’m not ready to. First of all, we do have a lot of really good core players. Everybody in hockey knows we have good core players.”
Teams are calling Murray, and he is listening. Both Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu have no-trade clauses, and Murray doesn’t want to trade them. Corey Perry and Cam Fowler are likely untouchable. Ryan Getzlaf, Bobby Ryan and Jonas Hiller could be up for discussion if the team doesn’t improve. Murray said he isn’t just looking for draft picks if he were to deal someone.
“I still believe we have some core players. Now whether we have to change a few core players, so be it. They’re deciding who’s staying and who’s not staying at this point. They’re the ones deciding.”
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: You have to believe that the Maple Leafs would be interested in Ryan Getzlaf. He’s the type of player Burke has been after since he got to Toronto. Rumblings suggest that GM Murray would rather move Ryan over Getzlaf. According to Cox, “the Leafs don’t see a fit with Ryan.” Burke may be setting up for a deal as he sent Phillipe Dupuis to the minors and put Colton Orr on waivers yesterday, though they have injured players who may be close in Tyler Bozak, Mike Komisarek, Colby Armstrong, Mike Brown and John-Michael Liles. When the Leafs were inquiring about Mike Richards in the summer, they were believed to be asked for a package involving Luke Schenn and Nazem Kadri. The Leafs don’t have a #1 center to send the Ducks, but could offer Bozak or possibly Joe Colborne. Giving up both Kadri and Colborne seems unlikely. Defenseman Carl Gunnarson could also come into play. Getzlaf will be UFA after next season.
- Luke DeCock via twitter: On the possible availability of Ryan and others …. DeCock desn’t know if there is a fit with Hurricanes in what they have to offer as GM Murray may be wanting a core player back.
- Joe Yerdon via twitter: One of the Ducks issues this season is the lack of depth. They are thin outside their top 6, and their blue line is a mish-mash of young and old. Trading Getzlaf could definitely improve their depth with players who are ready for the NHL. Trading a player with a ton a talent may not be a thing that Murray wants to do.
Capitals fire Boudreau, bring in Dale Hunter … Small market for Iginla? Miller wanting out of Buffalo? Ducks keeping coach, big 3 … Lehtonen to IR
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 28th, 2011
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Capitals have fired Bruce Boudreau, and have hired Dale Hunter as their new head coach.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If Jarome Iginla decides he’d accept a trade from the Flames, Matheson doesn’t see a big market for him as he carries a $7 million salary this year and next, and most Stanley Cup contenders are close to the ceiling or maxed out. Matheson wonders if the Stars would be interested. Blue Jackets forward Derick Brassard has been shopped around the league, but there have been no takers for him and his $3+ million salary. The Oilers would definitely like to acquire Cody Franson, but Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is in no hurry to move him. Matheson keeps hearing that Sabres goalie is out with a concussion and wouldn’t mind if the Sabres dealt him. The Sabres could use a top center, but have other holes as well. His wife is a California based actress but no California based team needs a goalie. Will the Lightning be calling the Wild about their goaltenders during the summer? Josh Harding will be a UFA and Niklas Backstrom’s deal ends after next year. Would the Predators consider moving backup goalie Anders Lindback, and toss in a a Ryan Ellis or Jonathan Blum to get a forward? Matheson heard that the Wild turned down a Josh Harding for James van Riemsdyk trade when JVR was still at the University of New Hampshire a couple years ago.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Ducks GM Bob Murray said he won’t fire coach Randy Carlyle and he won’t trade any of Ryan Getzlaf, Cory Perry or Bobby Ryan, though he has had offers for them.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators are 1 of 4 teams that have interest in Blue Jackets Derick Brassard. Brassard’s $3.2 million salary for the next 2 years is a stumbling block. The Sens, and pretty much every other team, have closed the book on Kyle Turris.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Stars have placed Kari Lehtonen on the IR. They are still waiting for results from the MRI, but Heika thinks it could be a long-term injury. They have recalled Richard Bachman. Francis Wathier was also recalled, so Vernon Fiddler could be out.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers could find out today the results for Taylor Hall’s MRI. If Hall is out for awhile, Matheson thinks they should move Magnus Paajarvi up with Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky. If Paajarvi can’t cut with Horcoff and Hemsky, it might be time for him to spend a few weeks in Oklahoma City in the AHL. Renny said that sending Paajarvi down “has been discussed.”
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson expects Carl Gunnarsson and David Steckel to return on Wednesday.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insiders: Dustin Penner has been given clearance to resume full activity. He won’t play tonight, but should soon. Andrei Loktionov and Trent Hunter spot could be in jeopardy. Scott Parse hasn’t been on the ice in 3 weeks, and there is no indication when he’ll start.
Bryzgalov heading back to Russia? Markov and Canadiens to talk … Plenty of options for Boudreau if fired … 4 ‘Canes UFAs
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 5th, 2011
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: A credible Russian media source is saying that SKA of the KHL has started negotiationg with Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. SKA was the team that signed Evgeni Nabokov last season.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Tretiak says that Alex Ovechkin will join Russia at the World Championships. Alexander Semin and Semyon Varlamov were not asked to join Russia. After Ovechkin, they have only 1 roster spot open, and Chesnokov thinks they are holding it for Pavel Datsyuk.
- Montreal Gazette: In the coming weeks the Montreal Canadiens and Andrei Markov will reportedly start contract negotiations. Don Meehan, Markov’s agent, said in an email that they will meet at the end of May.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: If Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau is fired, he likely won’t be out of work for long as there are jobs in Minnesota, New Jersey, Dallas, Ottawa, and Florida.
- Luke DeCock of the Rageigh News & Observer: Erik Cole, Jussi Jokinen, Chad LaRose and Joni Pitkanen are the top UFA’s for the Carolina Hurricanes this off-season. It’s unlikely that they all will be back. GM Jim Rutherford has indicated that he wants Cole back. They may not be able to afford to bring Pitkanen back, he made $4.5 million last season. Both Jokinen and LaRose made $1.8 million last season. Jokinen has 120 points in the last 2 seasons, and if would take a slight raise, he could be back. LaRose has averaged 30 points over the last 3 seasons, and with several youngers waiting in the wings, he may not be back.
Veteran for Tavares … Vokoun on the Block … Blues interested in Kovalev? Sturm to LA again … 3 Coaches on the hotseat
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 12th, 2010
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The New York Islanders are looking to add a veteran winger for John Tavares before the Christmas roster freeze next Sunday, Tampa’s Simon Gagne could be one option. Kevin Bieksa will likely be dealt before the trade deadline, and the San Jose Sharks are looking for a defenseman (I don’t see how the Canucks could send Bieksa to the Sharks when it’s very possible they could face each other in the Conference finals). Still whispers that Bruce Boudreau’s job may not be safe despite being 2nd in the conference. Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun could be traded for draft picks, Dale Tallon will be looking for a 1st round pick, the Lightning could be interested. The NY Rangers are looking to move Alexander Frolov to anyone. The Atlanta Thrashers were also interested in Marco Sturm. The Canadiens and Leafs could be interested in Jamie Langenbrunner.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The St. Louis Blues may have an interest in Ottawa Senators forward Alexei Kovalev. The Blues are without David Perron, Andy McDonald and TJ Oshie, but can’t make a move until their ownership situation is settled, may not be until the new year.
- Boston Herald: Marco Sturm has been traded to the Los Angeles Kings for future considerations, contingent on him passing a physical.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Murphy could see the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins making a trade, as the Blues have some defenseman to offer.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: There could be more validity to the report that Jordan Staal re-broke his hand. Bob McKenzie via twitter: More should be known on Monday if there was a setback on Staal’s hand, there were denials of the re-break and talk of “calcification” issues.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Gazette: Evgeni Malkin missed his 4th consecutive game on Saturday but may be ready to return on Tuesday against the Flyers, or Wedensday against the Rangers.
- Renaud Lavoie of the RDS: With Andrei Markov being out for the season, the Canadiens will now have some extra cash, and could look to Brad Richards. Richard’s first choice is to remain in Dallas but he may have to look elsewhere. He is from nearby Prince Edward Island.
- Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald: Calgary Flames coach Brett Sutter is on the hot seat. “But, make no mistake, it’s coming. It has to, doesn’t it? And perhaps the Flames will end up making the right move.” The Herald did a poll last week in a live chat asking who was to blame, Brett didn’t receive one vote, GM Darryl Sutter had 84% of the votes. Team president Ken King and their scouts each had 8%.
- Dave Hutchinson of the Star-Ledger: John MacLean’s tenure as the New Jersey Devils coach could be coming to end soon. They are 8-19-2 and have lost 9 of 12. “At this rate, it’ll be tough for MacLean to hold onto his job, although general manager Lou Lamoriello seems to be giving him every opportunity to lead his team out of this debilitating slump, one that could crush the Devils’ playoff hopes before Christmas.”
Foligno fined max … Green out with upper-body injury … Souray suits up for Bears tonight … Franzen has concussion?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 15th, 2010
- Chris Botta via twitter: Nick Foligno was fined the max amount, $2,500 for his blind-side hit on Patrick Dwyer. Colin Campbell added that this was Foligno’s first offense.
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Mike Green will not play in the next Capitals game against the Nashville Predators, due to an upper-body injury. Corey Masisak is reporting that Green is not at practice.
- Corey Masisak via twitter: According to Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau on their goaltending situation, “Whoever is playing better, for the most part. If they’re both playing equal, they’ll split.”
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Sheldon Souray says he’s playing tonight for the Hershey Bears.
- Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: It appears the trade window for the Columbus Blue Jackets to acquire Sheldon Souray is practically closed. Souray would have to clear through re-entry waivers, and he wouldn’t likely make it though.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Johan Franzen said after the game last night that he suffered a concussion after being hit by Stars Dman Mark Fistric. Mike Babcock said he’ll wait to hear what the doctors say before labeling the injury.
- Chris Botta of Fanhouse: Brad Richards has had some discussion with Stars management about his future with the team, but don’t expect a contract anytime soon. “It’s really out of my control,” Richards told NHL FanHouse. “There’s so much uncertainty right now. If you don’t know who you’re going to be playing for, there’s little point in worrying about it.”
- Allen Panzeri via twitter: The Ottawa Senators won’t know how serious Pascal Leclaire’s injury is until early next week. Wayne Scanlan via twitter: Leclaire injured his groin on the first shot of the game, and won’t travel with the team to Montreal and Pittsburgh.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: The Dallas Stars have placed Fabian Brunnstrom on waivers.
Ovechkin Suspended For 2 Games
Posted by Derek in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Opinion on March 16th, 2010
“The National Hockey League has suspended Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin for two games for his hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Brian Campbell on Sunday afternoon.
While the Capitals were not happy with the suspension, vice president and general manager George McPhee chose not to expand on his feelings.
“We have no problem with the way Alex tried to finish his check. Unfortunately, an injury resulted. We are disappointed with the suspension but do not want to comment further,” McPhee said in a statement Monday.” (Source:TSN)
This feels like Deja Vu to me, but as I stated in an earlier post when The Washington Capitals’ forward Alexander Ovechkin was suspended two games after his knee-on-knee hit with Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Tim Gleason, this is a trend that is going to continue as long as Ovechkin continues to abuse his “star status”.
I’ve watched the replay of this hit on Brian Campbell several times and I can’t even understand why Ovechkin delivered the hit in the first place. Campbell had already moved the puck, which is likely why he didn’t anticipate the hit coming a couple seconds after the fact, but in true Ovechkin style, he recklessly pushed Campbell into the boards to “finish his check”.
Like I said before, I’m a fan of OV’s game but he needs to figure out where the line is, when finishing a check does nothing to impact the play in a positive way for his team.
Judging by his comments, (his comments are detailed below in Mark’s post, along with video of the hit) he still doesn’t even see what was wrong with the play in the first place… That speaks to bigger problem, to say the least.
