Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News on November 17th, 2011
- David Alter via twitter: The Leafs have put Mikhail Grabovski on the IR.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The Canucks have put Andrew Ebbett on the LTIR retroactive to last Thursday with a broken foot. They also recalled goalie Eddie Lack yesterday, but he is expected to be sent back to the AHL today according to coach Alain Vigneault. This would signal that Roberto Luongo’s injury isn’t that serious. Adam Jahns via twitter: Vigneault said multiple times yesterday that Luongo is day-to-day.
- Mark Stepneski via twitter: Stars Adam Burish has a broken hand and is out 4 to 6 weeks.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Cam Barker will be out about a month with a sprained ankle. The Oils hope to have Ryan Whitney back in 10 days or so. Devan Dubnyk is expected to start in net for the Oilers against the Senators.

Kopecky signs with Panthers … Leafs almost acquire Talbot’s rights … Pens could sign Jagr today … Rangers to buyout Drury … Pitkanen re-sign with Canes, their other UFAs may not … Canucks options
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 29th, 2011
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Tomas Kopecky has signed with the Florida Panthers this morning for 4 years, $12 million.
- Damien Cox via twitter: “PITT negotiated Talbot’s neg rights to Leafs for a 5th rounder; Talbot wasn’t interested in around $1.7 mil per.”
- Mike Brophy via twitter: If Jaromir Jagr signs with the Penguins today, Brophy hearing it could be for $2.1 million.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Chris Drury’s buyout from the NY Rangers will become official today. Drury decided against applying for a medical exception for his back knee. Drury will get $3.333 million from the buyout. If Drury decided to apply for the medical exception, the Rangers wouldn’t have been able to buy him out, and his cap number would have applied over the summer.
“It was a great honor and privilege to be a New York Ranger for the past four years, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to fulfill that childhood dream,” Drury said in a statement that was sent to The Post by e-mail. “The Rangers are a first-class organization with great people in the hockey, public relations, team services and community relations departments.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Joni Pitkanen re-signed with the Hurricanes for 3 years at $4.5 million per season. They also signed Patrick Dwyer to a 2 year deal worth $1.25 million. Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is now becoming pessimistic about re-signing Erik Cole, Jussi Jokinen and Chad LaRose. “I’m very, very disappointed,” Rutherford said Tuesday. “It does not look good.” Two years ago both Cole and LaRose tested free agency then re-signed with the Hurricanes, but not this time. “I don’t think we will cross that bridge twice,” he said. “We’ve made substantial offers.”
- Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks GM Mike Gillis now has to decide if he wants to replace Christian Ehrhoff from within or through free agency. He indicated that he may not jump into the limited free agent pool. “We’ll take it as it comes,” commented Gillis. “I’m unsure if there is going to be a defenceman out there who can help us. We’ll see what’s there and what’s available.” They currently have under contract, Kevin Bieksa, Dan Hamhuis, Alex Edler, Keith Ballard, Aaron Rome and Chris Tanev, and are close on bringing back Sami Salo. Jason Botchford via twitter: Gillis and Salo’s agent will talk today.
- Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: The Canucks are looking to rebuild their bottom 6 forwards again. Raffi Torres, Chris Higgins, Tanner Glass and Jeff Tambellini are all UFAs. 5 forwards that might intrigue the Canucks are: Joel Ward (Nash), Tyler Kennedy (Pit), Tomas Fleischmann (Col), Anthony Stewart (Win) and Sean Bergenheim (TB).
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Bruins sent out an email yesterday afternoon offering Tomas Kaberle’s negotiating rights.
- David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period: With the Wild putting Cam Barker on waivers, they may be planning on buying him out.
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabers have about $15 million that they can spend on free agency starting Friday. The Sabres would like to add a forward and defenseman. They currently have 15 players under contract for $51.8 million. They have $3.9 committed to 6 RFAs, and are left with $8.6 million in cap room. The $15 million comes from the ability to go over the cap by 10% during the summer. The Sabres and Tim Connolly’s side haven’t exchanged offers, and plan to have a chat soon.
“We haven’t gotten into the stage of making offers to each other,” Barry said by phone. “We’re just talking about whether or not there’s a chance and whether or not it makes sense for them and for us to do something.”
Anthony Stewart, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Cam Barker, Carolina Hurricanes, Chad LaRose, Chris Drury, Christian Ehrhoff, Erik Cole, Florida Panthers, Jaromir Jagr, Joel Ward, Joni Pitkanen, Jussi Jokinen, Max Talbot, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, Patrick Dwyer, Pittsburgh Penguins, Sami Salo, Sean Bergenheim, Tim Connelly, Tomas Fleischmann, Tomas Kaberle, Tomas Kopecky, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tyler Kennedy, Vancouver Canucks
Malhotra and Hamhuis could be out … More on Brad Richards … Koivu only Wild player they won’t trade … Jagr not ruling out NHL
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 3rd, 2011
- Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: Rumors that Manny Malhotra had emergency surgery on his eye on Tuesday were false. If he doesn’t skate with teammates today, it’s unlikely he’ll play on Saturday. Dan Hamhuis is day-to-day with a lower-body injury after putting a hip check on Milan Lucic in Game 1. Hamhuis replacement options are Keith Ballard, Andrew Alberts and rookie Chris Tanev.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: So the Dallas Stars won’t be making an offer to Brad Richards.
“We have had talks with Brad throughout the year, and he’s not going to sign with us unless we have the ownership situation resolved, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen by the start of free agency,” Nieuwendyk said. “So while we could have discussions, it just doesn’t make much sense right now. So we would like to see if we could get something for his rights and allow another team to have a chance to sign him, but a lot of that is up to Brad and his agent.”
Richards has a no movement clause, and won’t easily waive it.
“I’m not aware of another player in this situation who has waived his no-trade clause, and I think there is a reason for that,” said Richards’ Toronto-based agent Pat Morris. “Accepting a move to another team creates an obligation, and you have to be pretty sure about that obligation. I think Brad has to do what’s best for himself and keep his options open.”
“It is difficult to leave Dallas, because it’s a city I really like and it’s a team where I thought I would have a chance to stay long-term,” Richards said. “But the ownership situation is what it is, and I’ve been through that before, and it’s something that’s really important to me. I want to win, and I think if you look around the league, the teams that win consistently are teams with strong ownership.”
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Richards history with John Tortorella has lead to speculation that he would be interested in joining the Rangers. The Maple Leafs and LA Kings are likely to give the Rangers competition. It’s likley he’ll want to test the open market.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby has been given clearance to begin his off-season workout routine, and would be monitored by his personal trainer. “I don’t want to look too far ahead, or whatever,” Shero said today. “But there’s no reason for me to expect him not to be (ready for camp), put it that way.”
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher has said he’s willing to trade anyone except Mikko Koivu. They have already interviewed Craig MacTavish, Michel Therrien, Ken Hitchcock and Kirk Muller for the vacant head coaching position. He plans on talking with Houston’s (AHL) Mike Yeo. “We’re closer to the end than we are to the beginning,” said Fletcher, in Toronto for the NHL draft combine. “It’s not going to go forever. There’s a lot to be done, and I think it’s very important to work hand-in-hand with the new coach. Defenseman Brent Burns will be a UFA after next season and could be looking something in the $5 million range. Fetcher will be speaking with Burns’ agent, Ron Salcer, in the near future. Cam Barker (25) will make $3.08 million next year, and if bought out, he’d cost $375,000 against the cap next year, $541,667 the year after. The Wild won’t make any decisions on their free agents until they hire a new coach.
- Andre Cyr on Canoe.ca: Jaromir Jagr is talking with 4 KHL teams and said he’ll make a decision within a week. He also mentioned not to exclude a return to the NHL. Jagr’s European agent said last week that the Canadiens were interested. Sources are saying the Rangers could be interested as well, though they don’t have much cap room. Jagr could be “satisfied” with a $2 million NHL salary.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators have interviewed 5 or 6 coaches to fill their head coaching vacancy. Saint John (QMJHL) head coach Gerard Gallant was one of the latest to interview for the position. GM Bryan Murray hopes to have the position filled by mid-June.
- Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: KHL’s Vityaz GM Alex Zhamnov said his team wants to sign Zenon Konopka (NY Islanders) and Steve MacIntyre (Oilers).
Andrew Alberts, Brad Richards, Brent Burns, Cam Barker, Chris Tanev, Dallas Stars, Dan Hamhuis, Gerard Gallant, Jaromir Jagr, Keith Ballard, KHL, Los Angeles Kings, Manny Malhotra, Mikko Koivu, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Sidney Crosby, Steve MacIntyre, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, Zenon Konopka
Leafs and Devils talking? Spezza back tomorrow? Howard out this weekend … Would Avs make a pitch for Thomas?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on October 29th, 2010
- James Mirtle via twitter: The Calgary Flames have signed Mark Giordano to a contract extension. Vicki Hall is saying it’s for 5 years. Update: Pierre LeBrun is told it’s $4.02 million a season for 5 years, ($20.1 million total)
- Mike Brophy of SportsNet: Brad Richards will arguably be the top UFA this summer if he doesn’t come to deal with the Dallas Stars beforehand. With the Stars awaiting new ownership from somewhere, it’s unlikely anything would get done until there is someone in place. Brophy has heard that the Devils and Maple Leafs have talked a little. The Devils could use a player like Tomas Kaberle, Leafs would like a top 6 player.
- Ian Mendes via twitter: Senators goalie Pascal Leclaire skated in full gear with the team for 20 minutes before leaving. Jason Spezza stayed on the ice with the team. Mendes added that Spezza confirms that he hopes to play tomorrow, if he thinks he can contribute, he’ll play.
- Craig Custance via twitter: Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard (back spasms) won’t play Saturday and will be re-evaluted on Monday.
- Jonas Siegel of AM640: Kris Versteeg is off to see a doctor about his back bad today, and may get an MRI done according to coach Ron Wilson. If he’s unable to go on Saturday, Luca Caputi will take his spot on the 2nd line again.
- Ian Walker via twitter: Vancouver Canucks defenseman Andrew Alberts was back at practice today after tweaking his knee and having a couple days off.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Minnesota Wild coach Todd Richards said that Antti Miettinen has a concussion from the hit he received on Monday from Dustin Brown. Cam Barker who’s missed the last 3 games is ready to return to the lineup. Guillaume Latendresse is out tomorrow.
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Dater wonders if Craig Anderson is out long term, would the Avalanche make a pitch for Bruins goalie Tim Thomas and his $5 million salary?
- TSN staff: TSN is reporting that Buffalo Sabres winger Jason Pominville failed his neuro-psych test. He’d been practicing all week, feeling no effects, and hoped to return tonight. He’s been sent back to Buffalo to meet with doctors.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell will travel with the team but is doubtful to play.
- Nicholas J. Cotsonika of Yahoo! Sports: Cotsonika interview Gary Bettman. Worth checking out.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Ray Emery will put on the pads next week for the first time since his hip surgery that should have, still could, end his hockey career. “Usually when you have this type of thing done, they just want you to walk again,” Emery told ESPN.com. “The doctor was understanding of what I wanted,” Emery said. “I told him that I could care less if I can’t walk in five years, but I want just want to play hockey for five years.”
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: Retirement may “come sooner than he may have liked or expected” for Bill Guerin, though he hasn’t made a final decision yet.
- Jesse Spector via twitter: Evgeny Grachev will make his NHL debut tonight for the New York Rangers.
- Fan590 Audio: Francois Beauchemin talking about the Leafs, last night’s game, and why he signed with the Leafs.
Andrew Alberts, Antti Miettinen, Bill Guerin, Boston Bruins, Brad Richards, Brian Campbell, Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, Cam Barker, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Craig Anderson, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Evgeny Grachev, Francois Beauchemin, Gary Bettman, Jason Pominville, Jason Spezza, Jimmy Howard, Kris Versteeg, Mark Giorano, Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Pascal Leclaire, Ray Emery, Tim Thomas, Tomas Kaberle, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks
No big offer for Kovalchuk from KHL? No over-paying on Kulemin … Bertuzzi gets 2 year offer
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 8th, 2010
- Chris Botta of AOL Fanhouse: It was rumored yesterday that Ilya Kovalchuk received a $14 million per season contract offer from the KHL, but a ‘reliable source’ tells Fanhouse that, that is not the case. New Jersey’s 1st round playoff loss may have leassened the chances of him returning. The Devils could use his star power to fill some seats, but they also have another LWer in Zach Parise, who be looking for a new contract after next season.
- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Burke would like to re-sign Nikolai Kulemin, but not a salary based on ice-time on a bad team. Burke doesn’t want to lose a promising young player, but he won’t overpay for it. Kulemin has good size, skill and improved greatly as the season progressed, but he’s not a 1st player just yet. Two former Leafs, Ian White and Matt Stajan were in the same boat, more playing opporunity than might have received on a better team, which is one reason they were moved out as their contract demands would have been higher. Stajan signed for 4 year and $14 million. If you’ve watched Stajan over the years, you’d know that Stajan isn’t worth $3.5 million a season. A handful teams have confirmed to touched base with Burke regarding Tomas Kaberle.
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: By now everyone and mother knows that the Blackhawks have a rough summer ahead of them trying to get some players re-signed, and shedding others. Allen thinks the Antti Niemi could ask for a deal in the $4 million range. They also have to look ahead to next summer when Dustin Byfuglien and more importantly, Brent Seabrook, will be restricted free agents.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM (Ken Holland) and assistant GM (Jim Nill) will be signing extensions later this week. The Red Wings have also sent Todd Bertuzzi a 2 year contract offer, and extended qualifying offers to Justin Abdelkader, Patrick Eaves, Darren Helm, Derek Meech and Drew Miller. They $6.5 to sign the above players, and possibly Andreas Lilja and/or a gritty forward.
- Minneapolis Star Tribune:The Wild may be looking to move a defenseman this off-season. Cam Barker, Marek Zidlicky (no-trade clause) and Greg Zanon are probably not going anywhere. Nick Schultz would be a prime candidate but his 4 years at $3.6 million a season could be difficult to move. That leaves Brent Burns as the most likely candidate. The wild hope/think they may be able to get a top center or top 6 winger.
- TSN: Jerry Reinsdorf has said “it was time to move on” from his pursuit of purchasing the Phoenix Coyotes, leaving the Ice Edged Group as the only local buyer. I’m actually surprised he lasted this long in this sale farse. I’d love to hear the comments he tells his buddies from the other leagues.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. has said the ‘Canes will be younger and that they won’t be spending over $50 million next season, it could be in the $44 million range. They won’t be active in the free agent market. It is also unlikely that they will be re-signing Ray Whitney before the July 1st free agent date.
Antti Niemi, Brent Burns, Brent Seabrook, Cam Barker, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Dustin Byfulien, Greg Zanon, Ian White, Ilya Kovalchuk, Jerry Reinsdorf, KHL, Marek Zidlicky, Matt Stajan, Minnesota Wild, New Jersey, Nick Schultz, Nikolai Kulemin, Phoenix Coyotes, Ray Whitney, Todd Bertuzzi, Tomas Kaberle, Toronto Maple Leafs
Cam Barker Traded to Minnesota For Johnsson and Leddy
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Trades on February 12th, 2010
The Chicago Blackhawks have gotten some salary cap relief for next season by trading defenseman Cam Barker to the Minnesota Wild for defenseman Kim Johnsson and prospect Nick Leddy.
Johnsson has a cap number of $4.85 million ($5.3 salary) this season, but is a UFA at seasons end. Barker is $3.083 cap hit until 2011-12.
Leddy was a 2009 1st round pick by the Wild, drafted 16th overall. According to Michael Russo, the Wild were concerned with his developement this year.
The Blackhawks cap number for next year is now in the $57-58 million range.

Tim Thomas on the Block? What the Kings offered for Kovalchuk, Price the odd man out? More Injuries for the Red Wings
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 7th, 2010
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- Boston has held talks with teams who are looking for goaltender. The 35 year old Tim Thomas has a no-movement clause, and has a $5 million cap hit until 2011-12. Chicago could be interested, but would have to bury Huet in the minors or find a trade partner for him. The Stars, Blues and Blue Jackets could be interested, though the price would be steep. Garrioch thinks they’d be able to get a top 6 forward, top 4 defenseman, and a backup goalie.
- The Kings offered Alexander Frolov, Teddy Purcell and a 2nd round pick for Kovalchuk, Waddell wanted Jack Johnson.
- Oilers GM Steve Tambellini tried to make the Kovalchuk sweepstakes in to a 3 way deal, offering Horcoff, Souray and Visnovsky as part of any package.
- The Blackhawks would like to get Jaroslav Halak, but it might look like Price is the odd man out.
- There could be up to 15 teams calling about Ray Whitney. The Penguins, Rangers, Flyers, Senators, Flames and Canucks will be interested.
- San Jose is looking for another Dman, after the Wallin trade fell through.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
- The Blues and Flyers were in running for Ilya Kovalchuk. The Thrashers wanted T.J. Oshie as part of the package, the Blues wouldn’t budge on that. Wadell wanted either James van Riemsdyk or Claude Giroux to be included.
- Ray Whitney and Niclas Wallin used their no-trade clause to nix deals to the Kings and Sharks as they both didn’t get the contract extension they wanted. Whitney wants 3 years, the Kings offered 1. They might be able meet half way at 2 years. (During HockeyCentral last night on Sportsnet, they said that Whitney could be looking for 2 years, at over $10 million.)
- Marek Svatos is still be shopped around. His cap number is $2.05 million.
- Barry Rozner of the Daily Herald: The Blackhawks and Ducks could be looking at a Cam Barker for James Wisniewski deal. Wisniewski is a RFA after season, and is making $2.75 million this year. Barker is at $3.1 for another 2 years.
- Steve Gorten of the Sun-Sentinel: Panthers GM Randy Sexton is trying to make some moves, but is having trouble finding a partner. He’s been speaking more frequently to Western Conference teams compared to Eastern Conference teams. He’s looking for a forward that could play on the power play, and depth on defense. “If you’re going to acquire a player, what teams want from you in return is ridiculous,” Sexton said. “I don’t mind paying a fair price for a player we’re going to keep, but for some of the rental players that are out there, some of the prices being asked are ridiculous.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Even after Niclas Wallin wouldn’t waive his ‘no-trade’ clause on Friday to go to San Jose, the teams continue to discuss the trade. I don’t understand this.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings were finally getting healthy, well that was until yesterday. Tomas Holmstrom left in the first period with a bruised knee. Patrick Eaves sprained his ankle in the second. Drew Miller left after taking a shot off the ankle. All will be re-evaluated today.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Ray Emery was held out of last nights game due to ‘tightness in his left hip’ and is listed as day-to-day. Jeff Carter is an alternate for Team Canada if a forward is injured.
Anaheim Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers, Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, Cam Barker, Carey Price, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Drew Miller, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, Ilya Kovalchuk, James Wisnieski, Jaroslav Halak, Los Angeles Kings, Marek Svatos, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Niclas Wallin, Ottawa Senators, Patrick Eaves, Phildelphia Flyers, Ray Whitney, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Tim Thomas, Tomas Holmstrom, Vancouver Canucks
Komisarek done for the year, Nic Wallin to Sharks? Extension for Emery? Possible Moves for Dallas and Boston
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 4th, 2010
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto Maple Leafs and the USA Olympic team took a hit yesterday, when it was announced that defenseman Mike Komisarek is done for year. Komisarek has already been out for a month, will required season ending shoulder surgery.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks GM Doug Wilson is heading out on the road with his team on a 10 day, 6 game road trip, but he’ll also be checking out other games as he looks for potential trade partners. He’ll be watching some NHL games, as well as junior and college games. The Sharks have been rumored to be looking for some defensive depth, and Niclas Wallin (Carolina) could be waiving his no-trade clause to join the Sharks.
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren plans on meeting with Ray Emery’s agent in March to discuss contract extension. Emery has a 16-11-1 record, 2.64 GAA, and a .905 save percentage in 29 games.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars could move Marty Turco, but they would need to acquire a goalie in that deal, or acquire one beforehand. The Stars are still in the playoff race, and don’t want to give up on the season. Jaroslav Halak and Cory Schneider are options, but the price is high. Kari Lehtonen of Atlanta is also an option, but he’s just coming back from back surgery and doesn’t have a good medical history. The Stars are trying to resign Steve Ott who’s a UFA at seasons end, but he could be dealt if they don’t think they can resign him. He’s looking for something in the 3 years/$9 million (Dustin Byfuglien) and 4 years/$15.5 million (Sean Avery) range. Mike Ribeiro has 3 years at $5 million a season could also be trade bait for a top level defenseman.
- Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Martin Biron is most likely and on move. The Canadiens might have an interest if they move either Price or Halak. The Kings might look for a veteran goalie like Biron or Turco (A smart idea in my opinion). The Sabres could be looking for a backup goalie, Biron is an option.
- James Murphy of NESN: Some trade possibilities for the Boston Bruins. The Oilers are listening to offers for Andrew Cogliano, though he’d cost more for the Bruins than a Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen or Aaron Ward. Lubomir Visnovsky has a high salary, so he’d be a difficult move. Tomas Kaberle could be back in play for the Bruins (I’ve thought about this for a couple weeks, would the Bruins send Toronto’s 1st round pick back to the Leafs for Kaberle?). Cam Barker and Patrick Sharp are other possibilities, but Chicago may not want to break up the chemistry.
- TheFourthPeriod: With Mike Cammalleri out for 6 weeks, the Canadiens could be looking for some scoring help, and have been linked to Ray Whitney and Paul Kariya.
- TSN Staff: The Islanders have place Brendan Witt on waivers. Witt has missed most of the last month with a knee injury, and was just activated off of IR.
Boston Bruins, Brendan Witt, Buffalo Sabres, Cam Barker, Carolina Hurricanes, Cory Schneider, Dallas Stars, Jaroslav Halak, Kari Lehtonen, Los Angeles Kings, Lubomir Visnovsky, Martin Biron, Marty Turco, Mike Komisarek, Mike Ribeiro, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, Niclas Wallin, Paul Kariya, Philadelphia Flyers, Ray Emery, Ray Whitney, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Steve Ott, Tomas Kaberle, Toronto Maple Leafs
Around the Boards: Last chance for Redden? Liles on the Block? Whitney to Bruins?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 21st, 2009
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal:
- The Colorado Avalanche are shopping John Michael Liles around the league. Liles has 2 1/2 years on a 4 year, $4.1 million contract.
- Jaromir Jagr will be a UFA next year, and might have an interest in heading to Edmonton.
- The Bruins may make a push for winger Ray Whitney at the trade deadline for a 2nd round pick. Philadelphia is another possible destination.
- Brian Costello of The Hockey News: This is not an actual trade rumor, but Costello thinks that a Jason Spezza for Dion Phaneuf could work out for both teams.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Wade Redden get another chance to impress John Tortorella after sitting out 2 games, and possibly avoid a demotion to the AHL.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: 20 year old Blue Jackets goalie is no longer the undisputed #1 goalie on Columbus. Mason has been pulled in 5 or 28 starts and is sporting a 10-12-5 record, .887 save percentage and 3.41 goals-against average. Mathieu Garon is 4-3-2 with a .908 save percentage and 2.77 goals-against average.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Players in Philadelphia that have no-trade/no-movement clauses: Simon Gagne, Danny Briere, Mike Richards, Scott Hartnell, Kimmo Timonen, and Chris Pronger.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Cam Barker is day-to-day with a lower body injury.
Boston Bruins, Cam Barker, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dion Phaneuf, Edmonton Oilers, Jaromir Jagr, Jason Spezza, John-Michael Liles, Mathieu Garon, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Ray Whitney, Steve Mason, Wade Redden
Around the Boards: Barker and Sopel, Savard, Maple Leaf trades coming? Coyotes losing Millions, Injury Updates
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 20th, 2009
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Allen thinks that Cam Barker ($3.083 million) and Brent Sopel ($2.333 million) may be 2 players the Blackhawks trade to clear up cap space. Versteeg and Byfuglien may be in play after/if the 2 others could be moved. Campbell is probably too hard to move, without taking back a large salary in return.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: After another heart breaking lost last night, Brian Burke will continue to look for anything to shake up his team. The article names 4 players (Blake, Kulemin, Grabovski, and Exelby) but I’m sure you could expand that list to include at least 15 names.
“Looking at trade options,” Burke said. “If that fails, I will start shipping money to the minors.”
Burke said there was no hard time frame for the moves, but given the team has 12 points in its first 20 games– tying their fifth-worst start in franchise history – sooner is more likely than later.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: More on the Marc Savard talks. The deal they are working on is believed to be worth between $5-6 million for at least 5 years. Savard was reportedly offered a 3 year deal worth $6.5 million earlier on in the season, but he turned it down as he was looking for a long term deal.
- Paul Waldie of the Globe and Mail: According to documents filed to the Arizona bankruptcy court, the Phoenix Coyotes lost $5 million in October. The Coyotes have lost $15.9 million since July 1st, and are on pace to lose $50 million this year. I wonder if Bettman thinks the Coyotes can still work in Phoenix. In another attempt to get some butts in the seats (averaging 9,736 a game), they are now offering lower seats for several games for $25 a piece.
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: UFA Marek Malik has been contacted by an NHL team, as well as several in Europe. ‘Puck Prospectus’ via ESPN, thinks is might be the Thrashers who want to sign him. Hendrick’s Hockey says that the Thrashers and Coyotes are interested.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Daniel Sedin is saying he won’t return until Sunday, but there is a chance he returns tonight. Pavol Demitra is getting close to returning, but no date has been set.
