Chris Chelios Arrested for Driving Under Influence
“Former Blackhawks star Chris Chelios was hit with a DUI charge following a late December traffic stop in west suburban Westmont, police said Tuesday.
Christos K. Chelios, 47, of Bloomfield, Mich., was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol after a Dec. 28 traffic stop, according to Westmont police. He was also ticketed for speeding and improper lane usage.” (Source: Chicago Sun-Times)
Well, what can I say? Chris Chelios signed with the AHL Chicago Wolves to bring leadership, and a role model influence, to the younger players there. The details are limited at this point, the due process is being followed, but you have to anticipate that if he’s found guilty, the Wolves will cut ties with the former NHL All-star. It would be a sad way to end an inspiring career.
Around the Boards: Forsberg, Malkin returns but Kunitz out,
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: It must a Swedish thing. Peter Forsberg seems to be as indecisive as Mats Sundin. Forsberg still isn’t sure if he’ll return to the NHL and may opt to stay in Sweden and play with Modo.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Good news for the Penguins, Evgeni Malkin returned to the lineup. Bad news for the Penguins, Chris Kunitz will miss 2 weeks with a nagging lower body injury.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
- Scott Niedermayer doesn`t want to be traded, nor do the Ducks want to trade him. They`d like him to retire a Duck.
- The Coyotes scouted Chris Chelios but have decided not move any further with it.
- Contract talks with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are going well and are both are close to re-signing.
- Teams have inquired about Fabian Brunnstrom, but the Stars are not trying to trade him.

Around the Boards: Kovalchuk, Briere and Van Riemsdyk, Penguin’s Injuries, Weight out, Giggy to Wings?

- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Thrashers fans and Fantasy owners of Ilya Kovalchuk have a smile on their face this morning, as Kovalchuk took part in yesterday’s practice. He was on a line with Antropov and Afinogenov. Kovalchuk is 95% a go for Thursday. He’s been out 3 weeks so far, original timetable was 4-6 weeks.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Both Daniel Briere and James Van Riemsdyk could be back in the lineup for Thursday’s Ottawa match-up. Ryan Parent and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen should also be back soon.
- To go along with the Ducks JS Giguere to the Maple Leafs for Vesa Toskala, Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch thinks the Red Wings might have an interest in Giguere as they are not thrilled with the tandem of Osgood and Howard so far.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The injuries keep mounting up for the Penguins, as Brooks Orpik appears to be the latest Penguin injured. Orpik left last night’s game and joining Sergei Gonchar, Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin, Tyler Kennedy Max Talbot on the sidelines.
- Arthur Staple of the Newsday: Doug Weight’s upper-body-injury that he sustained on Friday will keep him out the lineup for 4-6 weeks. Kyle Okposo has been diagnosed with the H1N1 swine flu.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Some of the New Jersey Devils forwards aren’t putting up the numbers they did in past season, and the blame may be on Jacques Lemaire’s systems. Well no #*$%, Lemaire’s ‘bore-the-crap-out-of-you’ systems will negate the skills out of anyone, see ‘Marion Gaborik’ and what he’ll do this year (if healthy).
- Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Brendan Morrison’s solid play so far this season may earn him a contract extension with the Capitals.
- Jesse Rogers of ESPN: Blackhawks center David Bolland will be out 3 to 4 months following surgery on a herniated disc. This probably means that Patrick Sharp and/or Kris Versteeg trade rumors may slow down.
- From CSN Washington: Mikael Nylander has cleared waivers, and reportedly has deals in the KHL, and is ready to move on … But “We’re still exploring our options,” McPhee said. “I’d rather not elaborate right now. It is probably a better opportunity to talk about it tomorrow. I’d like to see how it goes today and then maybe we can discuss it tomorrow.”
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Coyotes GM Don Maloney plans on scouting Chris Chelios on Friday as the AHL Chicgo Wolves play San Antonio …. Peter Forsberg might decide by the end of the week if/where he’ll be playing

- The Chicago Blackhawks probably won’t be the only team with hard cap decisions to make during/after the season. 2 big pieces to the Pittsburgh Penguins blueline will be free agents after the season, Sergei Gonchar and Kris Letang. Gonchar is unrestricted, while Letang is restricted. Letang will be looking for a nice raise, and though Gonchar would like around the same money he’s making now, I don’t think he’d get, especially from Pittsburgh. I don’t see how it’s possible from the Pens to keep both players. Gonchar will most likely test the free agent market, unless he takes a huge pay cut to stay with the Pens.
- Sheldon Souray of the Edmonton Oilers appears to be out with a concussion after being tripped and driven into the boards by Jarome Iginla, and coach Pat Quinn was not impressed with. It would be a big blow to the Oilers if Souray is out for an extended period of time.
- Chris Chelios still doesn’t know when to hang up the skates and retire. He will begin practicing with the AHL Chicago Wolves, though he hasn’t signed with them yet. The 80 year old Dman hopes to sign on with an NHL team sometime this year.
- Cody Hodgson, who was initially thought of to be the 2nd line center for the Vancouver Canucks, since sent back the OHL’s Bramption Battalion, has been told to stay off skates for at least 3 weeks due to a partially herniated disc.
Interest in Chelios?
Posted by Mark in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on August 28th, 2009
The 74 year old 47 year old Chris Chelios still believes he can be a capable NHL defenceman. It doesn’t appear that he’ll be back with the Red Wings. While the KHL might have been an option, an NHL team might be stepping up to the plate. The Nashville Predators have expressed some interest on bringing Chelios in.
Chelios only played in 28 games last season and didn’t record a point. His role has been greatly reduced the past couple seasons Wings, as the game has become younger and faster. If some team decides to bring Chelios in, he won’t produce much on the scoresheet, but he could provide some leadership.
But honestly, it’s time to hang them up Chris. With each passing year you forget more about the Hall of Fame player, and remember a player who just couldn’t let the game go.
