- Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News: Rangers defenseman is still receiving treatment for a his headaches and likely won’t be with the team this week. Tortorella received word on Saturday that Staal was “feeling good.” Asked if he’s prepared for a long-term Staal absence, Tortorella said: “I don’t know if you prepare that way. We just – whoever’s out there practicing, we’re preparing. And if someday Marc comes in and he’s there, we’re gonna prepare him the best we can to play a game.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: So with Sean Avery’s salary cap number not counting against the Dallas Stars cap number while he’s on the AHL, it may require them to add someone to make sure they don’t fall below the cap floor. The new player they add may have to make $1.2 million or more. Winger Tomas Vincour is only at $800,000 so he may have to move to the AHL for a more expensive player. Some free agents GM Joe Nieuwendyk could look at: Mike Grier, John Madden, Sergei Samsonov, Steve Bernier, Chris Clark, and Michael Nylander.
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning defenseman Mattias Ohlund will be out for up to a month as he’ll be having arthroscopic surgery on both knees today. He’s already on the IR, and hasn’t skated since Sept. 29th. “I’m going to say four to six weeks, but it really depends on how he feels, so it could be before that,” Yzerman said. The Lightning already have 7 healthy defenseman on the roster so it’s unlikely they look to acquire someone.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: The Red Wings power play is 0 for 9 to start the season, so they’ll try Jiri Hudler on the wing during Thursday’s game against the Canucks.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Victor Tikhonov was waived by the Coyotes has signed with SKA in the KHL.
- Eric Stephenson of the OC Register: Recently acquired Kyle Cumiskey is expected to head to the Ducks AHL team. Goalie Jeff Deslauriers and winger Brian McGrattan need to clear waivers before they can head to Syracuse.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Leafs forward Nazem Kadri is recovering quickly, “The little bastard is back faster than I was led to believe,” Wilson said. Kadri suffered a knee injury in late September and may find himself playing for the Marlies for a bit to shed some rust. He was expected to be out 3 to 4 weeks, but is back on the ice after only 2.
- Ben Meyer-Abbott of the Chicago Sun-Times: Winger Dan Carcillo was practicing on a line with Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa yesterday.

- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby has started his off-ice offseason workouts. Penguins GM Ray Shero plans to re-sign Dustin Jeffrey to a new deal this month. Tyler Kennedy is a RFA and the Pens make take him to arbitration to see what he’s awarded. If he’s in the $2 million range, which comparables suggest he could get, they may keep him. Rossi thinks he could also be traded. Defenseman Matt Niskanen could be available if any team is interested. Max Talbot is asking for 4 years and Pascal Dupuis is asking for a 3 year contract, the Pens don’t really want to go that long for either. Mike Rupp may be thinking he can get more on the open market than from the Penguins.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets have informed Ethan Moreau, Chris Clark and Craig Rivet that they won’t be re-signed. The Jackets are still thinking about re-signing Jan Hejda (50/50) and Scottie Upshall (unlikely).
- Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren spent part of the weekend finding out the parameters to get Ilya Bryzgalov signed to a 5 to possibly 8 year term. He might be able to get upwards of $6 million if he were to hit the free agent market on July 1st. To get Bryzgalov at a cap friendly number of around $5 million, they may have to start to $7 million and go down to $2 million on a 7 or 8 year deal. Putting Ian Laperriere on a LTIR would take $1.2 million off their cap number, they’re at about $59 million now. Trading Jeff Carter is one option, moving Matt Carle and Kris Versteeg is another. Sergei Bobrovsky may also find himself in a trade as he would have to pass through waivers if he was to be sent to the AHL or recalled from AHL. If Bryzgalov is signed to a long-term deal, Bobrovsky may not get his shot as a #1, and they may be able to get a 2nd round pick or top prospect in return.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Craig MacTavish was in Minnesota last week and had his 2nd interview for the vacant head coaching position. He’s considered to be the leading candidate at the moment.

- Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province: There are rumors that the NHL is looking into buying the Atlanta Thrashers and moving them to Winnipeg. They would raise $160 million, putting $35 million towards running the team, and offer $125 million to buy the team. It’s not know how far this idea has gone, or if it’s just in the tire kicking stages.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson could be on the hotseat, and possibly the same for Darcy Regier if the new owner wants to start fresh.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Bruins should announce this week if Marc Savard is shut down for the season or not. The Bruins could be looking for forward help and Jackets, Senators, Oilers and Panthers have forwards available for trade. With Evgeni Malkin done for the year it’s likely the Penguins will look at add some scoring. The Thrashers are looking to move Nik Antropov, Ron Hainsey and Freddy Modin.The only way Florida brings back Tomas Vokoun is if it’s on a 1 year deal. The Predators, Kings, and Lightning are looking at Mike Fisher, but the Senators are unlikely to move him. The Sens are looking for 2 top prospects and a high pick. The Canadiens, Sharks, Bruins and Capitals could be interested in Chris Phillips.
- David Kalan of NHL.com: What might the Penguins do with Malkin now done. Jason Arnott might be of interest to the Penguins. The Pens will be able to bring in $8.1 million in salary cap at the deadline. The Pens now have the salary space to add an Ales Hemsky or Dustin Penner, and if shooting for the moon, Jarome Iginla. Malkin’s number comes back on the books next year, so bringing in some help that is under contract next year could be difficult to do.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said he won’t discuss contract extensions with any of his 5 UFA’s, so they may become trade bait. Jan Hejda, Mathieu Garon, Ethan Moreau and Chris Clark and Andrew Murray will all be UFAs. Mike Commodore could be bought out in the summer if they can’t find a team to take him.

- NHL Sources Say: The Hockeycentral panel discuss what the Penguins might do to replace Evgeni Malkin (Alex Kovalev an option) as well as a potential trade between Edmonton and Ottawa (Penner and Phillips as key pieces of the deal). Yzerman may be looking to improve along the blueline, possibly Beachemin and Phillips. Senators are looking for a goaltender.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
“There hasn’t been much real talk,” Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon told ESPN.com this week. “Teams are saying ‘We’ll talk later, we’ll talk later.’ But that’s fine.”
“There’s been lots of talk going on, but it’s hard to jar anything loose right now,” Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said this week.
“Most of us have players that we would make available even right now for a trade, either because they’re underperforming and/or overpaid,” Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier told us this week. “But it’s impossible right now to get an agreement on values. We’re all hoping that we’re going to be able to just charge a cost without taking anything back, and that’s not reality. So I think, yes, we’re all sitting around to the last day or two again [before the trade deadline].”
The Maple Leafs and Senators have been trying to make trades (not with each other) for some time but haven’t had any luck. It doesn’t look like the Senators will move Erik Karlsson, Daniel Alfredsson, and Jason Spezza. The Leafs may be ready to take draft picks and prospects as ‘traditional hockey deals’ are harder to do nowadays. There’s the Tomas Kaberle and his no-trade clause question that will be brought up again. Francois Beauchemin and Kris Versteeg will continue get interest. Sheldon Souray is still available. Dustin Penner should draw some interest. Future UFA’s the Sabres have are Tim Connolly, Mike Grier, Rob Niedermayer, Craig Rivet and Steve Montador.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby has been cleared by doctors to begin light workouts. He’s been out since Jan. 5th with a mild concussion. Crosby will have to be symptom free from the workout before he’ll be able to practice with the team.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Sources are saying that the Ottawa Senators are trying to move Sergei Gonchar. Gonchar has 2 year and $11 million left on his deal. The Sharks, Bruins, and Blue Jackets are teams that have shown interest in adding a defenseman. “You could deal him, but you’re going to have to take somebody back,” said one NHL insider. “It’s going to have to be a dollar-for-dollar, which means they’ll have to take someone’s big contract back. “This is going to be a really tough deal for (the Senators) to make.” Chris Phillips and Jarkko Ruutu have been the most talked about names.
- Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: A list of players who’s names have come up the most in trade rumors: Mike Fisher (OTT), Tim Connolly (BUF), Daniel Alfredsson (OTT), Sergei Gonchar (OTT), Chris Phillips (OTT), Robyn Regehr (CAL), Bryan McCabe (FLA), Stephen Weiss (FLA), Tomas Vokoun (FLA), Cory Stillman (FLA), Drew Stafford (BUF), Tomas Kaberle (TOR), Francois Beauchemin (TOR), JS Giguere (TOR), Jason Arnott (NJ), Brad Richards (DAL), and Devin Setoguchi (SJ).

Specific defenseman named: Anton Babchuk (Flames), Brent Burns (Wild), Brian McCabe (Panthers), Steve Montador (Sabres) and Tomas Kaberle (Maple Leafs).
- Lisa Wallace of the Globe and Mail: Ray Emery is hoping to get a contract in the next couple of weeks, as he continues he comeback attempt. Last April he had bone grafted from his leg and inserted “into the ball of the hip.” He was on the ice in Ottawa with goaltending coach Eli Wilson. “I’m ready to go and start training in the American Hockey League and know that my body can take that kind of exertion,” Emery said. “The hockey’s not all the way there. I feel like a player at the end of the summer who needs some training and some games to get a feeling for the game again.”
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: The Blackhawks are looking to add another defenseman and a center. Players they might be offering as trade bait are Victor Stalberg, Jack Skille, and Nick Boynton. Defenseman that Sassone thinks they could look at are Bryan McCabe, Roman Hamrlik, Joni Pitkanen, and Chris Phillips.

- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times: Goalless in 6 games, and there are indications that Steven Stamkos is injured.
But then Boucher indicated Stamkos has been playing hurt.
“We never said it but he was injured,” Boucher said.
Well, that sparked all kinds of other questions.
What is the injury?
“Some parts of the body injury,” Boucher said. “It’s a lot better but it was really annoying for a while.”
Did the injury coincide with his scoring drought?
“Almost.”
Stamkos added
“nothing major, nothing that’s going to keep me from playing a game. Honestly, it’s the bumps and bruises I go through every year.”
He also said he has been fighting “a little bit of the flu, lately.”
- Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets are in a 6-14-3 slide (heading into last night’s game) and need to make a trade to shake things up. They could use a centerman and a defenseman. Some of their veterans brought in to instill a winning attitude haven’t really lived up to the plan. Arace wonders if they’d overrated some of their younger players. They could trade Jake Voracek or Derick Brassard for a defenseman, and change the makeup of the team. Maybe trade a couple draft picks for one, like the Canadiens did in getting James Wisniewski, and where was Howson on that one? They could also move Sammy Pahlsson, Chris Clark, Fedor Tyutin, Jan Hejda and Mathieu Garon to a contender.
- George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Jimmy Howard injured his knee in the first period last night. He was helped off the ice with about 7 minutes to go with a bruised knee. The Red Wings have also lost Tomas Holmstrom for likely 4 weeks with a fractured right hand. “Battling around the net,” he said. “Felt something. “Got to the bench and I felt like I can’t hold on to the stick anymore.” The Wings are already without Mike Modano, Pavel Datsyuk, Dan Cleary, Chris Osgood and Brad Stuart.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart had surgery on this broken jaw and will be out 6-8 weeks.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Cal O’Reilly crashed heavily into the boards (video below), was taken to hospital, but was later released. He was able to join the team on their charter home, the injury he sustained is not known yet.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars will likely look for a puck moving defenseman, “but it would have to be the perfect deal.but it would have to be the perfect deal.” If a new owner is not found by the trade deadline day, it would have to be a ‘cash for cash’ deal as there is no extra money.
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Flames GM Jay Feaster has been working the phones, “If for nothing else, I want to know what it is the teams are looking to do. Are there things that may make some sense for us? “You always want to make sure you’re gathering that information.” Feaster has 11 players with no-trade clauses and 11 with a cap of more than $3 million.
“Some guys will be honest with you up front and say, forget dollar for dollar, I have to win the battle of the dollars. I want to send more out than I’m taking back.
“That’s the tough thing. Guys want to match up term, too. It’s difficult when you have contracts with term and big dollars.
“I had to laugh, I had one guy say to me it has to be a fair deal skill for skill, but it has to be even money, too.”

- Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup Rings: Picture from Sean Leahy of Rocky Wirtz’s ring. Chris Kuc tweets “$30,000, 14-carat white gold, 404 diamonds & gemstones totaling apprx. 8 carats.”
- Mark Spector via twitter: RW Chris Clark of the Columbus Blue Jackets could available. Spector wonders if: in a Souray deal? some added grit in Vancouver? or a truculent American for the Leafs? Clark has a cap hit of $2.633,333, salary of $2.5 million.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: There are no suggestions that there is a team willing to trade for Brian Rolston’s and his $5.1 million contract. Coach John MacLean says that Bryce Salvador is “fine” after crashing into the boards. The Devils may end up having to waive and demote players to get under the cap.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Salvador underwent ear tests yesterday. He’s missed 9 games in the past because of ear problems. Injured players are not allowed to be waived.
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: If Bryce Salvador’s injury is long-term, the salary cap issues are not as serious for the New Jersey Devils.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Competition on the St. Louis Blues blueline is heating up. Ian Cole has outplayed Alex Pietrangelo, Oystrick and Nikitin are still in the battle.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: During Tuesday’s pre-season game, Cody Hodgson started on the 2nd, and ended up on the 4th. It may becoming more apparent that Hodgson needs time to recover from his back injury and gain some pro experience in the minors.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Marc Savard won’t travel with the team to Europe. From GM Peter Chiarelli,
“He spent the whole time at the team-building (in Vermont Monday and Tuesday). I spoke to him (yesterday) morning, and he’s going to see his doctors, and he’s going to work up his physical exertion test.
“He’s getting better. He’s feeling a lot better. We just have to make sure we do all the proper things – get through the exertion and the impact and the conditioning. He’s still a ways away.”

Around the Boards: Semin resigning for 1 year, Rangers need some size, Who will captain the Capitals and Leafs?

- Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo’s Puck Daddy: Though it’s not official yet, all signs are that the Capitals have signed Alex Semin to a 1 year, $6 million deal. After next season, Semin would become an unrestricted free agent. It has been mentioned that Semin could be bolting for the KHL in the next couple years. Chesnokov interviews Semin in this article.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers have been searching from some scoring, and now have Prospal out for 10-21 days, but Brooks thinks they have another issue. “It is imperative that GM Glen Sather acquire big bodies who will use them, even if it means sacrificing some of the skill level that coach John Tortorella covets in his athletes.”
- Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Both the Canucks and Mathieu Schneider deal a trade is the best interests of all sides. He signed with the club this past offseason as they both felt he could fit will on the power play, but the acquisition that brought in Christian Ehrhoff changed that.
- Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: With the trade of Chris Clark yesterday by the Capitals, the team captaincy opened up. Most people will calling for Ovechkin to get the ‘C’, but Mike Knuble or Brooks Laich could be other options.
- Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Ian White has added his name to the list of candidates to be next Maple Leafs captain. White joins current alternate captains Francois Beauchemin, Mike Komisarek, Tomas Kaberle, and possibly Matt Stajan and Phil Kessel.
The Capitals trade Clark and Jurcina to the Jackets for Chimera

- Finally a trade in the NHL to report. The Washington Capitals have sent their captain, Chris Clark, and defenseman Milan Jurcina to the Columbus Blue Jackets for winger Jason Chimera. As noted in ‘Around the Boards’ today, Columbus has been looking to add some leadership, and Clark fits that bill.Chris Clark: In 38 games so far this season; Clark has totalled 15 points (4 goal and 11 assists), a -4, 27 PIMs and 36 hits. In 9 seasons he’s played in 518 games, 95 goals, 99 assists, and 641 penalty minutes
Milan Jurcina: In 27 games this season he’s recorded 4 assists, is even, and has recorded 14 penalty minutes. In 302 games, he’s recorded 14 goals, 36 assists, and 210 penalty minutes.
Jason Chimera: In 39 games this season, he’s recorded 8 goals and 9 assists, is a -7, and has 47 PIM’s. In 461 career games, he’s scored 81 goals and has 91 assists, with 465 penalty minutes.
This trade gives the Blue Jackets some much needed leadership, and the Capitals some salary cap room for a future deal this year. Chris Clark has a cap hit of $2.633 million ($2.65 million this year, $2.5 million next season). Milan Jurcina has a cap hit of $1.375 million. This year the Blue Jackets will be on the hook for a cap number of $1.433 for Clark and $748,000 for Jurcina, $2.181 total. Jason Chimera has a cap number of $1.875 million for the next 3 seasons. His cap number for the remainder of the season is $1.02 million.
