2 groups interested in Coyotes … 10 players who could be in rumor mill … Aebischer gets tryout … Maloney wants to talk contract with Doan

Lisa Halverstadt of the Arizona Republic: The Coyotes have 2 qualified buyers who are interested in purchasing the team. Former Sharks president and chief executive Greg Jamison is one of them.

“As indicated in June, the City of Glendale has identified two qualified buyers for the Coyotes team and is looking forward to finalizing documents with qualified buyers,” spokeswoman Julie Frisoni said in a Friday statement. “No bonds will be sold by the city as part of these proposed concepts.”

Lyle Richardson in the Hockey News: Spector looks at 10 Western Conference players who could be in the rumor mill this year: Shea Weber, Jarome Iginla, Ales Hemsky, RJ Umberger, Paul Stastny, Dustin Penner, Ray Whitney, Jiri Hudler, TJ Oshie and Cory Schneider.

Anaheim Ducks via twitter: Jonas Hiller has been skating in Switzerland for the past month, is symptom free, and should be ready for training camp.

Todd Cordell via twitter: The Jets have given former Avs and Canadiens goalie David Aebischer a pro tryout.

Andy Strickland via twitter: There was speculation that Chris Drury met with Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke a couple weeks ago, but it is a 100% not true.

Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Coyotes GM Don Maloney wants to sit down with Shane Doan and discuss a new contract before training camp begins. Doan is in the last year of his deal.

“I would like to start dialogue to see where he is at, and what he is thinking,” Maloney said. “He is certainly a guy we would like to re-sign, and I would rather do it now and not next June 30.”

“Shane is in his mid-30s, but he still has that cowboy body,” Maloney said. “I think he could play another three or four years no problem and still play at a good, to very good, level.”

Maple Leafs notes on Schenn and Lombardi … Selanne to wait until September … Campoli getting interest from 6 teams

  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Cox thinks that Luke Schenn will get a multi-year deal worth around $10 million. A deal similar to the one Erik Johnson got (2 years at $2.6 million) could be a perfect deal for the Leafs. A short-term deal like that may not be what Schenn is looking for.  Schenn’s agent, Don Meehan, may be looking for a 4 year deal (Schenn would be a UFA in 4 years) at $4 million a season. Assistant GM Claude Loiselle is handling negotiations and they may be looking at a 3 or 5 year deal in the $2.5-3 million range.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne has told a Finnish paper that he will wait until September to decide if he will play next season or retire. He wants to make sure that his knee has heeled properly before committing to another season. Selanne spoke with Ducks GM Bob Murray last week, and will do so again next week.
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Matthew Lombardi is making progression in his recovery from a concussion. He likely won’t be ready for the start of the season, but isn’t far off.
  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: 6 teams have shown interest in defenseman Chris Campoli. A decision could be made in the next week or so.

Weber hearing .. Nassau County votes no … Nabokov to report … Devils notes … Savard talks concussion

  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Shea Weber’s arbitration is set for 8:00 am (9:00 am EST) this morning as a deal wasn’t struck last night. Both sides aren’t allowed to speak to reporters after the hearing briefs were filed. Weber won’t be a UFA until after the 2012-13 season. The Predators will have Ryan Suter and Pekka Rinne as UFAs after next year. The Predators currently have a cap number of $41.2 million.
  • Josh Cooper via twitter: “Both sides will have 90 minutes to present their cases. The side that goes first will have 10 minutes for rebuttal.” Cooper thinks it’s a bad situation for the Predators and their relationship with Weber.
  • Dave Caldwell of the NY Times: Nassau County voted against the $400 million overhaul of the Nassau Coliseum. Islanders owner Charles Wang has tried for nearly a decade to get a new/refurbished arena for the Isles. The Islanders lease expires after the 2015 season, and Wang said last night that the team will honor the lease.
  • The NY Times: Suspended Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov said he will attend training camp. “Yes, I do plan on attending,” Nabokov said Monday. “Now I will have full preparation for the season.” Nabokov on not reporting last January when he was claimed off waivers from Detroit:

“Any time you go to a new group, you want to be welcomed,” Nabokov said. “I’m not sure everyone understands the situation. Players can play 5, 10 minutes a night, but goalies have to play the whole game. I wasn’t ready and the situation wasn’t right. I wish we had better communication between the Islanders and me, but it was a tough decision for me that I couldn’t help.”

  • James Mirtle via twitter: The NJ Devils have put Colin White and Trent Hunter on waivers with the purpose of buying them out. White’s buyout would carry a cap hit of $1 million for the next 2 years. Hunter’s cap hit would be $666,667 for 4 years.
  • Ryan Lambert of Yahoo! Sports: The Devils and Parise will continue to work on getting a long-term deal done. The longer they go without one, the more rumors will pick up towards the trade deadline. “The entire TSN deadline show would become a theater production devoted to Parise’s eventual landing spot, regardless of how clear it was that the player would eventually sign with the only NHL team he has ever known.”
  • James Murphy of ESPN: Marc Savard told TSN:

“It’s obviously been a long road for me. I’m still suffering with a lot of daily issues. Right now it’s been a tough go,” Savard said. “I’m just trying to get through and not worry about hockey right now, just worry about my health because I have three young kids and they’re important to me.

“Mornings have been tough. When I get up in the morning I’m a little foggy sometimes. But as the day wears on, I’m pretty good. Hot sun is tough; I try to stay in the shade and stuff like that and pop the odd Advil and it seems to be OK.”

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli is petitioning the NHL to have Savard’s name etched on the Stanley Cup. Under League rules he is not eligible as he didn’t play enough games last season.

  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Brent Burns said it was a “no-brainer” to signed long-term in San Jose after his wife spent a week there. He signed a 5  year, $28.8 million extension yesterday. The Sharks feel they got a top-end defenseman at a reasonable price. The contract has a limited no-trade clause (a 3 team trade list) that doesn’t kick in until July 1st, 2012.
  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: The Kings have 10 candidates for their bottom 6, so they don’t have much interest in Chris Drury. Also, Drury doesn’t want to leave the New York area.

Khabibulin doesn’t have to wear pink underwear … Hints on Modano … Canucks could make moves … Savard doubtful for this year

  • Edmonton Journal: Nikolai Khabibulin arrived at jail yesterday for his 15 day stay. Officials have said he won’t have to wear the “black and white stripped uniform and pink underwear” during his stay at the tent city jail.
  • Jeff Miller of the OC Register: The Anaheim Ducks are still waiting to hear if Teemu Selanne will retire or come back for another season. If he does decide to play, it will be with the Ducks. Some players still remain unsigned: Mike Modano, John Madden, Chris Drury, JP Dumont, Cory Stillman, Nikolai Zherdev, Bryan McCabe, Scott Hannan, Nick Boynton, Chris Campoli, Paul Mara.
  • Detroit Free Press: Mike Modano was on a Dallas radio show on Friday, and when asked if he’ll play again, Modano responded: “I don’t know. I think that was the swan song.” He later answered “Not yet” when asked if he wanted to make a retirement announcement on the show.
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman said “We’re still looking at areas to improve the hockey team,” … “There is money to be spent.” A Brad Winchester signing is not imminent, the interest may be more from Winchester’s side and not from the Canucks. The Canucks could look at a trade as they have “a glut of borderline second liners and a backup goalie who is ready to be a starter for another team.”
  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli won’t comment on Brad Marchand contract negotiations, but he’ll most likely be signed to a 2 year deal, possibly in the $2.25 million per season range. Center David Krejci is entering the final year of his 3 year, $11.25 million contract. They may begin talks with Krejci, who could be looking for a deal in the $5 million per year range. It is doubtful that Marc Savard plays this year. “As a layperson,’’ Chiarelli said, “I’d be very surprised if Marc will be playing this coming year.’’

Shea Weber update … Emery gets tryout from ‘Hawks … Khabibulin heading to ‘Tent City’ … Some remaining UFAs

  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Shea Weber and the Predators have their arbitration hearing on August 2nd if a deal can’t get done before.

“It would be way better for the player and the team to negotiate a contract,” Predators General Manager David Poile said. “But the arbitration gives you that ability if you can’t do that. And right now that’s where we fall if we can’t get a contract done.”

Yesterday morning Poile said he tried contacting Weber’s agents but hadn’t heard back from them.

“We are preparing to go to Toronto (for arbitration),” Poile said. “Would I like to sign Shea to a longer-term contract vs. going to arbitration? Absolutely.”

  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Goalie Ray Emery will be attending the Chicago Blackhawks training camp on a tryout. He’ll battle Alexander Salak for the backup position. The Blackhawks will have until Oct. 1st to decide whether to sign him or not. “He’s an NHL goalie,” Barry said. “He’s there to play in the NHL. That’s what the plan is. He would not want to start in the ‘A.’ He certainly intends to be worthy of a one-way deal.”
  • Conal Pierse of the Edmonton Journal: Nikolai Khabibulin will spend 15 days in Arizona’s Tent City Jail. “There will be no coffee, no salt, no cigarettes, no porno, no movies,” Arpaio said. “The only television we give them is the weather channel, so they can see how hot it is.”
  • Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: There are some big names left on the free agent market, but their better years may be behind them. Some may be forced to leave the league, take big pay cuts or retire. Teemu Selanne still hasn’t informed the Ducks what he plans on doing. Some other players available are: Bryan McCabe, Chris Drury, Scott Hannan, Cory Stillman, Nikolai Zherdev, Alexei Kovalev, Sergei Samsonov, John Madden, Marty Turco, Mike Modano.
  • Winnipeg Sun: A Russian news organization is saying that Nikolai Zherdev wants to play for the Jets. No word if they want him or not.

Caps look for cap relief from Poti, Poti hopes to be ready … Boogaard’s brother faces charges … Goalie tandems set … Flyers interested in Drury

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: The Washington Capitals aren’t expecting Tom Poti to be ready for training camp, and his $2.875 million cap hit could be placed on LTIR. Poti may be thinking differently, in an email from his agent, “He is working with his trainers throughout the summer with the intention that he will be ready to fully participate once training camp begins.”
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: With the Sabres signing backup Jhonas Enroth yesterday, it basically gives have team their goalie tandem for next year. Still without a team are Ray Emery, Marty Turco, Evgeni Nabokov and Pascal Leclaire.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: The hiring of Pete DeBoer won’t affect Zach Parise’s whether to sign a long-term deal or not.

“I made up my mind before the coach was hired that it wasn’t going to impact that decision,” Parise said. “I was anxious to see who was going to be the coach, but not for contract purposes.”

If the Devils and Parise go to arbitration, we’ll get a 1 year deal and become a UFA after next season.

  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: St. Louis Blues Chairman Dave Checketts thinks a deal to sell the Blues will be completed by the start of the season. 100% of the team is for sale. Game Plan LLC is expected to set a deadline date for groups interested in making a bid. Once all offers are submitted, Game Plan, Checketts and the NHL will go through them picking the best option. The purchase price could be around $200 million and would include the Scottrade Center.

There is speculation that the Blackhawks could be having trouble re-signing one of their free agents, Michael Frolik, Chris Campoli, or Viktor Stalberg. GM Stan Bowman hopes to sign all 3. They might be kicking tires on adding a center, possibly John Madden, Eric Belanger and Zenon Konopka.
  • Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Flames GM Jay Feaster,

Kopecky signs with Panthers … Leafs almost acquire Talbot’s rights … Pens could sign Jagr today … Rangers to buyout Drury … Pitkanen re-sign with Canes, their other UFAs may not … Canucks options

  • Damien Cox via twitter: “PITT negotiated Talbot’s neg rights to Leafs for a 5th rounder; Talbot wasn’t interested in around $1.7 mil per.”
  • Mike Brophy via twitter: If Jaromir Jagr signs with the Penguins today, Brophy hearing it could be for $2.1 million.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Chris Drury’s buyout from the NY Rangers will become official today. Drury decided against applying for a medical exception for his back knee. Drury will get $3.333 million from the buyout. If Drury decided to apply for the medical exception, the Rangers wouldn’t have been able to buy him out, and his cap number would have applied over the summer.

“It was a great honor and privilege to be a New York Ranger for the past four years, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to fulfill that childhood dream,” Drury said in a statement that was sent to The Post by e-mail. “The Rangers are a first-class organization with great people in the hockey, public relations, team services and community relations departments.

  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Joni Pitkanen re-signed with the Hurricanes for 3 years at $4.5 million per season. They also signed Patrick Dwyer to a 2 year deal worth $1.25 million. Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is now becoming pessimistic about re-signing Erik Cole, Jussi Jokinen and Chad LaRose. “I’m very, very disappointed,” Rutherford said Tuesday. “It does not look good.” Two years ago both Cole and LaRose tested free agency then re-signed with the Hurricanes, but not this time. “I don’t think we will cross that bridge twice,” he said. “We’ve made substantial offers.”
  • Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks GM Mike Gillis now has to decide if he wants to replace Christian Ehrhoff from within or through free agency. He indicated that he may not jump into the limited free agent pool. “We’ll take it as it comes,” commented Gillis. “I’m unsure if there is going to be a defenceman out there who can help us. We’ll see what’s there and what’s available.” They currently have under contract, Kevin Bieksa, Dan Hamhuis, Alex Edler, Keith Ballard, Aaron Rome and Chris Tanev, and are close on bringing back Sami Salo. Jason Botchford via twitter: Gillis and Salo’s agent will talk today.
  • Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: The Canucks are looking to rebuild their bottom 6 forwards again. Raffi Torres, Chris Higgins, Tanner Glass and Jeff Tambellini are all UFAs. 5 forwards that might intrigue the Canucks are: Joel Ward (Nash), Tyler Kennedy (Pit), Tomas Fleischmann (Col), Anthony Stewart (Win) and Sean Bergenheim (TB).
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabers have about $15 million that they can spend on free agency starting Friday. The Sabres would like to add a forward and defenseman. They currently have 15 players under contract for $51.8 million. They have $3.9 committed to 6 RFAs, and are left with $8.6 million in cap room. The $15 million comes from the ability to go over the cap by 10% during the summer. The Sabres and Tim Connolly’s side haven’t exchanged offers, and plan to have a chat soon.

“We haven’t gotten into the stage of making offers to each other,” Barry said by phone. “We’re just talking about whether or not there’s a chance and whether or not it makes sense for them and for us to do something.”

Rangers may not be able to buyout Drury now … Vokoun likes the Avs? Oilers trying to move up in 1st round … Bryzgalov meets with Flyers

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Chris Drury has a degenerative condition in his left knee that won’t allow him to play next year. The NY Rangers were planning on buying him out but due to the condition they won’t be able to. Drury’s $7.05 million will count against the summer cap in which a team can’t exceed next year’s cap by more than 10%. If they were able to buy him out, it would have carried about $3.717 million of dead space this summer. Once the season starts they can put him on LTIR. It’s likely that Drury’s career is over.
  • Peter Adler of the Edmonton Journal: Tomas Vokoun told a Czech newspaper that he’s not thinking about taking the offer from Avangard Omsk of the KHL as he wants to remain in the NHL. The paper is saying that Vokoun has heard from the Flyers and from the Coyotes.

“I would not be displeased if I got a good offer from Floria and accepted it,” the paper quotes Vokoun as saying. “But if I happen to get an offer from a team that might have a chance to challenge for the Stanley Cup, now, that might be irresistible.”

When asked which team, Vokoun said “Like Colorado.”

  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater talked with Avs GM Greg Sherman several days ago, and he didn’t seemed worried about their goaltending situation. It seemed to Dater that he already knew what will happen regarding the goalie.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers are trying hard to move from #19 in the NHL draft (pick acquired in the Dustin Penner trade) in to the top 10. They may not necessarily draft a forward and defenseman in the draft as next year there could be 15 dman worthy of a 1st round pick. There are lots of trade scenarios for the Oilers, most revolve around Ales Hemsky. Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paajarvi, Shawn Horcoff, and Ryan Whitney are pretty much untouchables. Prospects Anton Lander, Jeff Petry and Teemu Hartikainen may not be available either, everyone else could be available. Matheson offers some trade scenarios that are 99% certain not to happen. Hemsky, a prospect, the 19th and 31st pick to Colorado for the 2nd overall pick. Hemsky, the 19th and 31st, plus a 2012 2nd round pick to New Jersey for the 4th pick (suggested by someone else). Eberle, Sam Gagner and the 31st pick for the 5th overall pick, Kyle Okposo and Travis Hamonic. Columbus seems like an obvious trade partner, but it may be unlikely that they are interested in a player like Hemsky who would be a free agent after next year and has had shoulder issues. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson,

“We’ve had a little bit of interest in it so far and we’re willing to listen. Given where our franchise is now, we’d be more open to moving it for immediate help. We would be looking for a centre or a defenceman because we’re pretty strong on the wing with R.J. Umberger, (Rick) Nash, (Kristian) Huselius and (Jake) Voracek,”

If the Oilers don’t deal Hemsky, they’ll need to figure out if they want to re-sign him and committ around $5 million per season when they have the likes of Hall, Eberle, and Paajarvi who be looking for more money in a couple years. Would Winnipeg at #7 be interested? Could they look to move Sam Gagner?

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers and Ilya Bryzgalov have begun negotiations. Bryzgalov met with a variety of organizational members yesterday. If his demands aren’t crazy, they should be able to get a deal. Carchidi thinks a 5 year deal at $5.5 million could be a good number. They don’t want to move Jeff Carter to clear cap space, but may consider if the received a big offer. It would have to be move than the 8th overall pick and Jakub Voracek rumored deal.  If they can’t get a deal with Bryzgalov done, Evgeni Nabokov could be an option.

Coyotes 3-pronged goalie stategy … Hiller to skate in July … Callahan talks “just begining” … Balsillie could get team if he’s good

  • Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Not re-signing Ilya Bryzgalov opens up some new windows for the Coyotes.

“It’s an opportunity to potentially spend less, hopefully find a way to be as good and use that excess resource in other ways to put a better team in front of our goaltending,” Maloney said. “So this to me isn’t something that we’re staring into our lemonade and going, ‘Woe is us.’ “

Coyotes GM Don Maloney has a 3-pronged strategy for his goaltending search. 1. Acquire top young goalie by trade: “There’s three or four in other organizations that may be available in a trade that would cost a good asset but may potentially solidify your goaltending for a long time; that’s one obvious way to look at it.” 2. Sign a UFA: “There’s two or three players in that grouping that we like. We think in our system with (goaltending coach) Sean Burke would be good fits for us.” Tomas Vokoun’s price may be too high. 3. Bring in a veteran goalie: “I’ve had a couple conversations (this week) regarding some very good established goaltenders on other clubs that for financial reasons they might be looking to make some changes.”  The Coyotes expect to re-sign RFA Keith Yandle, and expect to pay a high price. Re-signing Vernon Fiddler, Radim Vrbata and Lauri Korpikoski are also on the Coyotes wish-list. Ed Jovanovski’s return is doubtful, Maloney hasn’t spoken with Jovo or his agent.
  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The decision has been made by the Rangers to buyout Chris Drury, a source added “He’s gone.” The buyout will save the Rangers $3.3 million, he was scheduled to have a $7.05 million cap hit. Ryan Callahan contract talks are “just beginning”
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller will resume skating in July. Hiller has been bother by vertigo since Feb.

“He’s fine,” Murray said. “He’s in good spirits. We talked about a couple of things. He’ll be skating on the ice sometime around the middle of July. “He’ll be doing a camp early in the week and then skate with some pros after that.”

Ducks GM Bob Murray hasn’t spoken with UFA goalie Ray Emery. “I haven’t really thought about it at this time,” Murray said when asked about re-signing Emery. “We have Jonas and Dan Ellis. Until something tells me we don’t have that, then I’ll deal with that.”

  • David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini has been ‘talking out loud’ about the possibility of trading the 1st overall pick in the 2011 NHL draft. “I’ve had a few calls of people kicking the tires of how they can help me make the Oilers a better team,” Tambellini told reporters. “For me to move the No. 1 pick would have to be something exceptional. This is a huge building block again.” Staples thinks that if they were to trade the 1st pick, they would still need to pick in the top 5 or 6. The Oilers top scout sees Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Adam Larsson as a cut above the rest (Jonathan Huberdeau, Dougie Hamilton, Gabriel Landeskog or possibly Sean Couturier).
  • TSN: Forbes magazine is reporting that Gary Bettman has told Jim Balsillie that he could get an NHL team if he does not “create any more spectacles or bad publicity for the league”.
