- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Shoalts looks at the Southeast Division and if teams will be buyers or sellers. GMs of Capitals, Panthers and Lightning are under pressure to make the playoffs. The Panthers are 1st in the division and have the 3rd slot, but their point total would have them in 8th. The Jets sit 6 points out are looking for scoring help. They have 7 UFAs including goalie Chris Mason and Dman Johnny Oduya. The Lightning are 9 points out, and could use a goaltender. Teams are calling about Ryan Malone and Dominic Moore. They wouldn’t mind moving Vinny Lecavalier, but he has a $7.27 million cap hit through 2020. The Wild are looking to be buyers, and could target Tuomo Ruutu. Though the asking price including a 1st round pick is likely too high for them. The Wild are also looking for a top 4 Dman.
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: The cost for Tuomo Ruutu will be high. The Bruins may not want to disrupt their chemistry with a trade. Nathon Horton’s health will play a part in what they do. The Sabres could use a #1 center. The Panthers may look to re-sign Jason Garrison, and to find defenseman to replace the injured Ed Jovanovski. The Canadiens have rental Hal Gill, Andrei Kostitsyn, and Travis Moen. The Devils are expected to hold on to Zach Parise. The Islanders have Mark Eaton and Steve Staios available, and possibly Evengi Nabokov. The Isles will look to re-sign P.A. Parenteau. The Rangers are looking for offensive help and may look at Ryan Smyth. The Senators are looking for offensive help with Tuomo Ruutu their top target. The Flyers could use a veteran defenseman, and they’ll probably be interested in Hal Gill. The Lightning may be offering up Ryan Malone, Dominic Moore, and Adam Hall. They will look at a goaltender at some point and will consider Cory Schneider, Ben Bishop, Andres Lindback and Josh Harding. The Leafs could be looking at Ruutu, Carter and Getzlaf. Though deals involving guys like Getzlaf usually happen in the summer. The Capitals could use a culture change, and could look at moving Alex Semin rather than lose him for nothing. The Jets will look to get some young assets for veterans like Johnny Oduya and possibly Ron Hainsey.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli could have a busy 3 weeks leading up to the deadline. Ray Whitney would be a perfect fit, but the Coyotes are not sellers yet. Vinny Prospal could be an option for Jordan Caron or a 2nd round pick. Tuomo Ruutu or Drew Stafford could be options as well. Along the blueline, they could look at Hal Gill, Jaroslav Spacek, Steve Staios or Milan Jurcina. Some team may take a flyer on Kings Dustin Penner
- Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune: The Blackhawks sit 25th in goals against, and they continue to look for a defenseman. Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun: Though help may arrive through a trade, the ‘Hawks won’t be going after a goalie. Adam Jahns via twitter: GM Stan Bowman on defenseman after Gleason and Beauchemin re-signed, “You just move down the list.”
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Bruins forward Nathan Horton has been out since Jan. 22nd with a concussion skated yesterday. “When you see him in full practice with us, that’s going to be the next sign. Until then that’s basically all I can tell you,” Claude Julien said. “You take steps and he’s got to stay symptom-free. You go from the bike, to the ice, to contact. You’ve just got to make sure the next day, or the next few days, there’s no setbacks.”
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: The Bruins shook up their lines yesterday, dropping David Krejci to center Benoit Pouliot and Jordan Caron. Chris Kelly centered Peverley and Lucic.
- TSN: Capitals forward Brooks Laich left last night’s game and was seen after with crutches and a brace on his left knee. “I’m not a doctor, but these things sometimes there’s some swelling and you’ve got to wait to see what happens,” Laich said. “I don’t think it’s anything serious. In the past I’ve been a fast healer, so we’ll see when I wake up.”
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets made forward Eric Fehr a healthy scratch for the 1st time this season. Fehr has only 2 points in 29 games this year.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Cam Ward will likely start all 3 games on the Hurricanes road trip.

- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: The Wild have dropped out of the top 8 in the West after losing 14 of 16.
“We’ll keep looking to upgrade the talent. We’ll move whatever we have to move if it makes sense. Not everybody’s untouchable. And certainly we have a lot of prospects we’re not going to move, but there’s assets we have that we can move to make our team better if we can find the right fit.”
They’ve been hit with injuries to their top 6. They would like to improve their top 6, but they aren’t the only ones. The Ducks have dangled Bobby Ryan. The Sabres have Drew Stafford, Derek Roy and Brad Boyes. The Rangers have Wojtek Wolski and Erik Christensen. The Blue Jackets have Vaclav Prospal. The Oilers have Ales Hemsky. The Hurricanes have Tuomo Ruutu.
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets could be looking to move some of their future UFAs, which includes: Chris Mason, Jim Slater, Tanner Glass, Kyle Wellwood, Johnny Oduya, Randy Jones, Mark Flood and Derek Meech. Though some of their UFAs could receive contract extensions or possibly brought back in the summer.

- Jerry DiPaola of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang could return to the lineup for the 1st time in 2 months tonight. “It’s coach’s decision,” Letang said of his return. “I know I am ready to go. I have been resting. I have been doing some treatment. I am comfortable. Otherwise I wouldn’t be on the ice.”
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild center Mikko Koivu still hopes he’ll be able to participate in the All-Star game, and the NHL has agreed to hold off on naming a replacement.
- Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames forward Curtis Glencross is week-to-week with a knee injury.
- David Pollak via twitter: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe has facial fractures, but is not feeling any concussion-like symptoms.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: There isn’t much optimism from Capitals when it comes to defenseman Tom Poti being able to return to the NHL. “Tom’s been working at it and improving but I don’t know if he’ll ever get to the point where he can play again,” McPhee told reporters Tuesday. “As I said in the summer, we weren’t counting on it.”

- Craig Custance of ESPN: Teams are closing in on the point where they know what they have and what they may need. Blue GM Doug Armstrong:
“A lot of groundwork has been laid and (Tuesday) was more putting fertilizer on some of those seeds you planted to see what happens. You get more work done when you’re in the room with 30 people than trying to pick up the phone 30 different times.”
Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster:
“We have a lot of work to do,” Flames GM Jay Feaster said. “We’re not happy where we are. We need to improve in a lot of areas. This isn’t acceptable to be where we are right now.”
The Hurricanes are 1-5-0 in their last 6 and are in need of a shakeup. The Islanders have dropped to last in the Eastern Conference. The Jets may be thinking long-term and have 2 UFA’s in Chris Mason and Johnny Oduya. Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff:
“I’m not a big believer on putting deadlines on anything,” he said. “You make decisions based on what the right timing is for you. The league puts a lot of deadlines on you for signing guys or trading deadlines, so you certainly have parameters. But I’m not going to put any deadlines on it.”
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The NHL board of governors will vote on realignment at the Dec. 5th-6th meetings. The Wings would like to move to the Eastern Conference, or at least play home-and-homes with the other Conference. Western Conference teams don’t want to see the Red Wings move to the East. Coyotes GM Don Maloney reiterated his stance with Kyle Turris.
“For the 15-hundredth time, we have no intention of trading him, regardless of the offer, at all whatsoever,” Maloney told ESPN.com.
Turris has 1 and 2 year offers from the Coyotes sitting on the table. The Blue Jackets have intensified their efforts to get a goalie. Antero Niittymaki won’t be back for another 3-4 weeks, but could be on the move at some point. Teams have inquired to see if he’s available.
- The Fourth Period: The LA Kings and NJ Devils maybe talking trade, they are both scouting each other. The Devils have been interested in Jonathan Bernier in the past, but sources close to the Kings have said they are not interested in trading Bernier at this moment, unless blown away by an offer. The Devils may also be looking for some scoring help, but that help likely isn’t coming from the Kings, unless they are interested in Dustin Penner. Dustin Brown and Jack Johnson could be trade candidates as well.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson notes the Predators have positioned themselves well to retain both Ryan Suter and Shea Weber. They may be able to get Suter in the 7 years for $49 million range and Weber for 6 or 5 years at $7.5 million. Matheson doesn’t see them trading either defenseman and wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander Radulov returns to Nashville next season. Matheson also thinks that if Linus Omark isn’t called up in the next month, he’ll head back to Europe.
- James Murphy via twitter: Murphy calls the Rask for Nash rumors bogus and comical.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Haggerty thinks that David Krejci could be the odd guy out in Boston with Bergeron and Seguin down the middle. The Bruins aren’t sure he’s a $5 million a year guy.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: CSKA of the KHL is working on a loan with the Senators regarding Nikita Filatov.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has said again that he is not interested in Marty Turco. Names on Burke’s radar could be Scott Clemmensen (FLA), Evgeni Nabokov (NYI) and Antero Niittymaki (SJ). Saturday will mark 4 weeks since James Reimer has hit by Brian Gionta. Ben Scrivens will start tonight, marking his 6th start in the last 7 games.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein wonders if it’s time for the Trent Hunter experiment in LA to end, and to bring up a young speedy forward.
- Tim Sassone via twitter: If Blackhawks Rostislav Olesz is sent to the minors, they’ll have $6.95 million in cap space. Plenty of room for a center and/or a power play QB.

- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green only played 7 minutes and 44 seconds in his return from his ankle injury before leaving the game. Green didn’t re-injure his ankle, it was a knee-on-knee hit by Ryan Carter.
“It’s a different soreness. So at least it’s not the ankle. So that’s good news,” Boudreau said. “Yeah I’m pretty confident [it’s not serious]. I talked to him already about it. It’s a day-to-day thing, not a three-week day-to-day thing. It’s an actual day-to-day thing.”
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau benched Alexander Semin for the final 24 minutes last night.
- Dustin Leed via twitter: Leed can confirm that the Flyers have received calls about goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren is not budging. No need for the Flyers to move him now.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars are hoping for a Nov. 21st press conference to introduce Tom Gaglardi as the teams new owner. They are trying to fast track the deal, moving the bankruptcy hearing up to Nov. 18th from Nov. 23rd.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Matthew Hulsizer is still going throught the process of purchasing the St. Louis Blues. Sources are saying Hulsizer would have 70% control of the team, Blue chairman Dave Checketts holds 30%.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer’s agent said that Reimer hasn’t experienced headaches in several days and will be returning to the ice soon. “We are 100% confident the Leafs are handling this situation well and that includes James, his family and all involved,” Petkau told TSN. Agent Ray Petkau said that reports of multiple concussions are “exaggerated.”
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens forward Andrei Kostitsyn won’t be in the lineup tonight against the Predators. Mike Cammalleri is a game-time decision.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets forward Jeff Carter took part in full practice yesterday and is questionable for tonight.

- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: A source has said that the Flyers are not looking to make a move to bolster their depth. Danny Briere, Matt Read, Brayden Schenn and Chris Pronger are out. Briere is a possibility to play tonight. Buzz started on Tuesday when GM Paul Holmgren, their pro scout Al Hill, and director of player development Dave Brown were at the Capitals-Ducks game. The Flyers were thought to have interest a depth defenseman from the Ducks, possibly Sheldon Brookbank. They appear to be satisfied with their team for now.
“They’ve made it clear that they are not willing to make a trade to just make a trade,” the source said. “They don’t have that much wiggle room under the salary cap and it’s not as if they’re in a tailspin. No matter, they would have no shortage of teams to deal with, as Columbus, Boston and others try to sort out their problems.”
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: As noted earlier this week, Ryan Suter’s agent will resume talks with the Predators around Nov. 14th-15th.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith is still day-to-day and is uncertain for tomorrow. Ray Emery could start in net.

- TSN: It’s not known if Sidney Crosby to will be ready for training camp. Reports from Halifax are that concussion symptoms have returned, and he’s cancelled some ice time.
“Sidney hasn’t been shut down by anyone,” Brisson said. “He has simply adjusted his summer program accordingly to the different needs for the appropriate recovery. Training camp is in three weeks from now. It is too premature to speculate all kinds of deliberate information at his point.
“Sidney will address the media at the appropriate time in order to give everyone an update. As far as I know training camp hasn’t started yet.”
Josh Rimer of NHL Home Ice Radio tweeted: “Also hearing from 3 sources now that Sidney Crosby won’t b ready 2 start season. I hope its not true because the NHL needs its best players!”
- Mike Brophy via twitter: “Source says Sidney Crosby pushing himself hard, but is not symptom free.”
- Eric Stephen of the OC Register: Though he hasn’t made an official announcement, signs are pointing to Teemu Selanne returning for one more season. A Finnish report paraphrases him in translation that he’s knows his knee can’t withstand another year past this season. Selanne should be back in California next week to get his kids ready for school.
- Randy Starkman of the Toronto Star: Dave Scatchard announced yesterday that he is retiring from hockey due to concussions.
“I’m happy that the doctor basically told me straight out there was zero chance of me playing because it kind of put me in my place,” said Scatchard, sounding anything but happy. “I believe the doctor’s exact words were he wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if he let me continue to play.”
“Even today I have trouble pushing my kids on a swing set,” said Scatchard from his home in Phoenix. “Just the motion makes me really nauseous. Wrestling around with them on the ground, I can only do it for a minute or two and then I just feel sick. Any rolling motions or spinning motions just completely send me for a loop.”
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: When at the R&D camp, Sabres GM Darcy Reiger said “It’s still pretty quiet. I was just talking to fellow GMs downstairs” in regards to trade talk. The Sabres sit around $3.5 million over the salary cap and would like to get below “probably through a trade.” Coyotes GM Don Maloney is looking for a centerman and is having difficulities as well:
“Every time you see people, you ask them – ‘What do you have going?’ It’s a quiet period, a lot of people have gone on vacation for a few weeks. We’re all kind of taking a deep breath,” Maloney told Sporting News.
- Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks forward Ryan Kesler, 4 weeks removed from hip surgery, hopes to be ready by the season opener on Oct. 6th.
“It’s going good; small victories here and there,” Kesler told Joey Kenward, who replaces Kristen Reid as the face of Canucks TV. “I just got off my crutches and I’ll start strengthening so everything is back to normal. I’ll start skating here in the next couple of weeks and hopefully be back by that first game.”
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Blues received “multiple bids” at yesterday’s deadline but “confidentiality agreements preclude us from elaborating any further” on the number of bids received. It is known that Blues minority owner Tom Stillman put in a bid. It’s not known if Matthew Hulsizer put in a bid. Many beleive that “Game Plan” would accept other offers if it reached their targeted selling price.
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets goalie Chris Mason is now closer to home, a product of Red Deer, had this to say about playing in Atlanta:
“It was tough in Atlanta because in my opinion it just wasn’t an optimal hockey market. The fans there were awesome but there just wasn’t a broad range of support, so it was tough some nights to have that feeling it didn’t matter so much and hockey wasn’t the most important thing. Going to Winnipeg, you’re not going to have that feeling at all. It’s going to be everywhere, it’s going to be the opposite spectrum.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers UFA defenseman Jason Strudwick hasn’t received any offers or training camp invites yet. He’s staying in shape in hope that he gets a call.
“I’d still like to play, but if I don’t, well, I can live with that. I don’t know if I’d want to go a camp for two or three weeks (on a tryout) and then, say, get cut,” said Strudwick.

- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman is out indefinitely with a leg hematoma. Wideman was hit in the leg by Tuomo Ruutu on Tuesday, muscle damage appears limited.
Blood was drained from his leg to alleviate pressure, he’s been sending pictures to teammates. A hematoma occurs when blood leaks from a broken blood vessel, artery or capillary into tissue where it doesn’t belong, such as a muscle. It can result in compartment syndrome, which involves increased pressure in a muscle compartment that can lead to permanent muscle or nerve damage.
Mike Knuble said Wideman could be out 2 weeks or more. John Erskine left last night’s game and is day-to-day.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Chris Pronger’s broken right hand is not healing as fast as they thought, and he probably won’t get into another regular season game. They had hoped to get him into a game next week. Jody Shelley is healing quickly and could return next week. Brian Boucher is expected to start today against the Devils.
- Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: The Flames quest for the playoffs this year are likely over. Ales Kotalik and Niklas Hagman are not likely to be back next year. Alex Tanguay and Curtis Glencross will be UFA’s at seasons end. If Glencross is looking for a 5 year deal, he may have to look elsewhere. Jarome Iginla has 2 more year left on his contract, and hasn’t given any indication he “wants to seek greener pastures.” Miikka Kiprusoff has 3 years left at a $5.833 cap hit, so he’s not that attractive to other teams, especially if they’d want a good return.Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Ales Kotalik was sent back to the minors yesterday afternoon. He has 1 more year left at $3 million. Daymond Langkow could play tonight, a year since he suffered broken vertebrae.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby practiced with teammates yesterday. There is no timetable for his return, and GM Ray Shero doesn’t see that he’ll be given clearance to return before the end of the regular season.
“Whether you’re coming back from injury going into the playoffs or it’s the regular season, you’ve got to make sure that you’re healthy,” Crosby said. “It’s a matter for me of making sure that I’m healthy. If that takes two months, then it takes two months. If it doesn’t, great. I can’t really control that.
“I’ve just got to do the right things to try to feel good and get back to where I need to be. I’m not looking too far ahead at all. I’m just trying to look at these little opportunities as a good chance to get back with the guys. At the same time, it’s a small step with a lot to go.”
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Thrashers are planning on alternating goalies down the stretch. Chris Mason started last night, Ondrej Pavelec could start Saturday and back with Mason next week versus Nashville.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche should know next week if Adam Foote is able to get back in the lineup before he retires from the NHL. Peter Budaj will start in net for the Avs tonight.

- Darren Dreger via twitter: Seems that due to the high asking price for Zenon Konopka (a 2nd round pick), the Islanders may want to re-sign him. Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: The Islanders were also shopping Radek Martinek for a 2nd round pick. GM Garth Snow hasn’t talked about a contact extension for Konopka, and will reevaluate at the end of the season.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Dallas Stars never backed off their demands of “one or two core roster players, a premium prospect and a first-round draft pick” for Brad Richards.
- Tim Bontemps of the NY Post: Rangers backup goalie Martin Biron broke his collarbone at practice yesterday and is out indefinitely.
- George Richards of the Sun Sentinel: Stephen Weiss denied reports that he’d only waive his no trade clause to head to Toronto.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello never considered trading Andy Greene or Johan Hedberg.
- Barry Davis via twitter: Canadiens defenseman Jaro Spacek had arthroscopic surgery and will be out 4 to 6 weeks.
