Osgood to retire … Burke to meet with Schenn’s agent after vacation … Some remaining FAs … Yashin to the NHL?

  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Chris Osgood will have a press conference today to announce his retirement from the NHL, and he’ll take a job within the organization. It was earlier thought that he would play next year, but that is not the case. Ty Conklin, Ray Emery and Marty Turco could be options as backups to Jimmy Howard.
  • Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is on holidays until next week, and no talks with Luke Schenn’s agent, Don Meehan, will begin until he returns. The Islanders, Predators, Avalanche and Coyotes are currently below the salary cap floor. The Predators still need to re-sign Shea Weber. Some remaining free agents are: Teemu Selanne, Vinny Prospal, Bryan McCabe, Nikolay Zherdev, Cory Stillman, Scott Hannan, Ray Emery, Sergei Samsonov, Alex Kovalev, Kyle Wellwood, JP Dumont, John Madden, Brent Sopel, Jack Hillen, Karlis Skrastins, Nick Boynton, Paul Mara, Ty Conklin, Marty Turco, and Pascal Leclaire.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano has an arbitration hearing set for Thursday, but they could be getting close to signing a multi-year deal. Cogliano made a $1 million least year and recorded 35 points. Cogliano could fill the hole as their 3rd line center, but could also move up to the 2nd line center roll or possibly move to the wing.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post:  Michel Therrien may be the backup plan for the NJ Devils coaching position if Lou Lamoriello can’t convince Jacques Lemaire to return next season.
  • Dan Duggan of the Boston Herald: Re-signing Brad Marchand is a top priority for Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli. There has been some progress made, and Marchand isn’t concerned.

“It’s a very busy time for everyone with the Cup and everything,” Marchand said. “We’re confident something is going to get done real soon. I don’t think either of us are worried. We know something is going to get done.

“They know I want to be here. I know they want me here.”

  • Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: SKA St. Petersburg decided not to extend Alexei Yashin’s contract, making him a free agent. Yashin’s agent Mark Gandler told Sergei Begishev of the Sovestsky Sport,

Is there an interest in Alexei from the NHL?

“We have already received one offer.”

    From the Islanders?

“I will not discuss what the club is. We are considering the expediency of the offer.”

    Gandler added:

“We will meet with Alexei this week for the first time. We will discuss everything. We are not in a hurry. At this moment we have not had any serious negotiations with any club. It would have been unreasonable to do that until we are sure that everything is good health wise. As far as the leagues are concerned, we will look at both sides [the NHL and the KHL].”

Chesnokov thinks it could be a negoiating ploy to get a better KHL deal, but if it’s true, “it could be the talk of the season.”

Devils prospects to miss camp … Blackhawks notes … Holland wants to talked to Osgood … Stars sale process ongoing … Bruins blueline

  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Mattias Tedenby will miss the NJ Devils prospect camp due to visa problems. Fellow prospect Jacob Josefson said that Tedenby was at the airport on the weekend to head to New Jersey when it was discovered his visa had the wrong birth date. Jon Merrill will also not be prospect camp as he’s taking summer classes.
  • Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman remains hopeful that he can re-sign Chris Campoli and Michael Frolik.

“We’re not there yet, but we’re still talking, which is a good sign,” Bowman said. “We’re trying to look at different options in terms of term and dollar amounts. . . . We’re hopeful it’ll get done.”

Down the middle the Blackhawks are a little thin, but they plan of giving rookie Marcus Kruger more time and also using Patrick Sharp and Frolik at center. Rostislav Olesz, acquired for Brian Campell, will be given every opportunity to prove himself at training camp.

  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings signed Joey MacDonald to a 2 year deal with the 1st year being 2-way. “I want to talk to Chris,” general manager Ken Holland said. “I want to hear what he has to say.” Osgood is returning from Scotland, so they won’t be able to speak until Wednesday at the earliest. Holland wants to know if Osgood can still play and that he’s recovered from his sports hernia and groin area issues.

“We explored the market on July 1,” Holland said. “We talked to a couple of guys that we thought would be good additions. They went elsewhere. As the market thinned out, we always knew we had Chris Osgood out there.

“We’ve protected ourselves with the signing of Joey MacDonald. Now I want to talk to Chris and make a decision within the next week.”

Ty Conklin still could be an option.

  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens shouldn’t rush Josh Gorges back from his major reconstructive surgery if he’s not a 100% when the season starts. Andrei Markov came back a little early last year, but got hurt again and only played 7 games all year. Tom Gagliardi’s exclusive negotiating window to buy the Dallas Stars has expired. 4 or 5 groups have shown interest in buying the team. The Stars lost $15 million last year. The NHL and Tom’s Hick’s creditors are looking for max return while purchasers are looking for a deal.
  • Matt Kalman of the Boston Herald: The Bruins have continued adding some organizational depth along their blueline this offseason. Tommy Cross and Dougie Hamilton were paired together at prospect camp, and could be envisioned as their 2nd or 3rd pairing in 2013-14. Joe Haggerty via twitter: Hamilton isn’t expected to make a roster push during training camp this fall.
  • Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News: Mike Modano,

“Not really in a rush to make a decision one way or another about what’s going to happen,” he said, “but I’ll probably make an announcement in two or three weeks if I want to play or if that’s it.”

Stamkos announcement could be looming … Flyers will create a trade package … Talbot contract to be restructured … Maple Leafs notes

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: No offer sheet for Stamkos. “Its believed #Lightning have closed in and formal announcement could be looming.” The last offer was a 5 year deal at $37 million, $7.4 million cap hit.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Though it’s highly doubtful, a source has said the Flyers will put together a trade package if the Lightning think they can’t re-signed Stamkos. Stamkos reportedly turned down a 5 year deal worth $37.5 million. It’s likely the Lightning would be interested in Brayden Schenn, Sergei Bobrovsky, others and picks.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadlephia Inquirer: The Flyers will have to restructure Max Talbot’s 5 year, $9 million contract. The CBA doesn’t allow a salary to drop more then 50% from year-to-year. From Talbot’s 3rd to 4th year his contract went from $2.25 million to $1 million. The Flyers assistant GM Barry Hanrahan said that no fine was forthcoming.
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: The Red Wings are still looking for a backup to Jimmy Howard. They are unsure if Chris Osgood (if he doesn’t retire) can stay healthy all year.

“We owe it to ourselves to see what is out there,” said Holland, who will consider bringing Osgood back. “We have money to spend (under the salary the cap). There are players we remain interested in.”

Teams continue to call the Red Wings about possible trades. They had contacted some free agent goalies on Friday, but all wanted to look at other teams as the Howard was the Wings #1 goalie. Ty Conklin remains unsigned.

  • Michael Traikos via twitter: Brian Burke on Clarke MacArthur: “He’s going to get a big payday in arbitration. We think that’s fair … if it’s too big, we’re re-evaluate it.”
  • Michael Traikos via twitter: Burke on RFAs Luke Schenn and Tyler Bozak: “I’m not worried about any of these guys getting done.”
  • Michael Traikos via twitter: Burke: “we’re going to sit back and catch our breath now … I don’t like the depth chart being full going into camp.”
  • Chris Botta via twitter: Isles GM Garth Snow is looking for 1 forward and 1 defenseman. A trade is most likely for a top defenseman.

Morning rumblings involving Richards, Arnott, Doughty, Blackhawks, Flames, Sabres, Red Wings and Lightning

  • Kevin Allen via twitter: Brad Richards salary breakdown: “$12M, $12M, $9M, $8.5M, $8.5M, $8.5M, $7M + 3 Yrs at $1M. Yrly totals include signing bonuses.$10M in 11-12, $8M in 12-13”
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: The Maple Leafs offered Brad Richards a higher annual average salary than the Rangers, but Richards wanted the term and to play for John Tortorella again.
  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times:  The Kings and Drew Doughty have exchanged proposals, it could be in the $7 million range. GM Lombardi was at Newport Sports office Friday, but didn’t meet with Doughty’s agent, Don Meehan.
  • Daily Herald: There were possible trade talks between the Blackhawks and Canadiens. There is speculation that the Blackhawks could be having trouble re-signing one of their free agents, Michael Frolik, Chris Campoli, or Viktor Stalberg. GM Stan Bowman hopes to sign all 3. They might be kicking tires on adding a center, possibly John Madden, Eric Belanger and Zenon Konopka.
  • Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Flames GM Jay Feaster,

“Guys are getting traded. Teams are starting to make phone calls, teams trying to unload salary. Now, for the first time in a long time, we are poised to take advantage when we see an opportunity we like.

“We’re not done. We think there will be opportunities in the trade market. We think there will be opportunities when camps open.”

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: The Sabres will have to move some salary out. They could send Ales Kotalik and Shaone Morrisonn to the AHL, those moves would have $5 million in cap space. They could look at moving Brad Boyes ($4 million) or Jochen Hecht ($3.5 million). Both Boyes and Hecht are in the last year of their deals.

Malhotra plans for Game 1 … Wings looking for Dman … Crosby to be re-evaluated … Another group interested in Thrashers

  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Manny Malhotra has been given medical clearance and is preparing to play in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. 11 weeks ago he nearly lost his eye. “Everything is as it should be,” Malhotra said of the eye. “Going forward, I will continue to be monitored daily and if at any time the doctor doesn’t like what he sees, he has the ultimate veto power,” Malhotra said. Malhotra is expected to take Cody Hodgson’s spot as the 4th line center.
  • Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit News: The Red Wings will now be looking for a top defenseman after Rafalski’s unexpected retirement. “The market isn’t as strong, but we’re only looking for one guy,” Holland said. “If a player’s not out there or doesn’t want to buy into the program, we’ll look at an alternative plan. Do you go a touch higher than you want? Yeah. But we’re not going to go dramatically higher than what we think makes sense.” UFA’s that might interest the Wings are Kevin Bieksa, Christian Ehrhoff, Joni Pitkanen, Ed Jovanovski, James Wisniewski, Roman Hamrlik, Ian White and Tomas Kaberle.
  • Fan 590 Audio: Ken Holland talks on Prime Time Sports (Thursday) talking about Rafalski’s retirement and what it means for their blueline.
  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby will be re-evaluated by a concussion specialist in the next week or so. Crosby has been vacationing in Europe, needs clearance from doctors before he can resume his off-season workouts. The Penguins won’t be re-signing Alex Kovalev or Mike Comrie. Comrie could retire, “I’m not sure what Mike’s going to do,” Shero said. “He might be leaning toward retirement.” Shero didn’t rule out re-signing any of their UFA’s: Max Talbot, Pascal Dupuis, Mike Rupp, Craig Adams, Arron Asham, Eric Godard, Chris Conner and Nick Johnson.
  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Chris Osgood is “100 percent healthy” but a decision on his playing future is still not known.  “He’s going through the internal process to decide if he has the energy and the desire and determination to play hockey again,” Holland said. “In the middle of June, we’ll look at the goalies that are out there, we’re going to try and figure out a way to be the best team that we can.”
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Another group stepped forward with interest in buying the Thrashers and keeping the team in Atlanta. Statement from president Don Waddell.

“Along with all other groups who have expressed an interest in pursuing an ownership opportunity, which has happened as recently as earlier this week, we have said continuously that ‘until an agreement is signed and approved by the board of governors, it’s never too late but they will have to move very quickly and decisively.  Ownership still is committed to selling at a greatly reduced price to anyone committed to Atlanta.’  ”

Rangers should offer pick for Richards … Avs goalie options … Penguins start negotiations … Flames hope to re-sign Tanguay … Gunnarson could be trade bait

  • Greg Brady via twitter: Sources tell Brady the earliest the Stanley Cup Finals would start would be next Monday. There will be no games on this Saturday regardless.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: If the Rangers wait until July 1st to go after Brad Richards, they’ll have steep competition in Toronto and Los Angeles, and the price may go up. Brooks thinks the Rangers should make an offer to the Stars before July 1st, so Richards an get acquainted with the organization, and they could get full info on his concussion this past season. Brooks thinks the Rangers should offer the Stars a 2nd round pick (#57) for Richards.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater doesn’t think the Avalanche will offer any a goalie a contract in the $5-6 million per season range. Free agent goalies in that range are Ilya Bryzgalov and Tomas Vokoun. Other possible goalies could be: Josh Harding – risky, JS Giguere – too many miles, Marty Turco – no thanks, Chris Osgood – pass. The trade route could be an option but comes with a price: Jonathan Quick, Jonathan Bernier, or Cory Schneider – all expensive. If they go after Vokoun, Dater would only offer a 3 year deal worth $10 million. Peter Budaj won’t be back, and they can’t go into the season hoping Brian Elliott is the answer.
  • Will DePaoli via twitter: The Penguins have begun talks with Craig Adams. Nothing is imminent but it’s possible that they could get a deal done this week.
  • Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames GM Jay Feaster said on the radio yesterday that he has confidence the Flames will re-sign winger Alex Tanguay. “We believe we can,” the general manager said on NHL Live. “We do want to get him signed.” Tanguay signed a 1 year deal worth $1.7 million last year, and recorded 22 goals and 69 points. The Flames have 17 players under contract for next year with a cap hit of $55.8 million with an expected cap around $62.2 million. Ales Kotalik and his $3 million salary could be off to the minors next season. The future of Niklas Hagman and his $3 million is also in doubt. The Flames hope to re-sign backup goalie Henrik Karlsson. They have 4 UFA defenseman, Anton Babchuk ($1.4 million), Adam Pardy ($700,000), Steve Staios ($2.7 million) and Brett Carson ($500,000). Brendan Mikkelson ($687,500) is a RFA.
  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: With the strong play of Maple Leafs prospects Jesse Blacker (Owen Sound) and Jake Gardiner, Carl Gunnarson could be vulnerable as Brian Burke continue to look for a number 1 center.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: St. Louis Blues prospect Vladimir Tarasenko has decided to spend another year in the KHL. Update: “Sibir GM tells SovSport the Blues made an “exclusive offer” to Tarasenko “like no other…guaranteeing he’d play.” “Sibir GM to Sovsport about the Blues’ offer to Tarasenko: “We had no idea the Blues wanted [Tarasenko] to come so bad. But it’d be better for him to play 1 more year in Russia before moving to the NHL.”

Bergeron could be back for Game 2 … Red Wings off-season notes … Jagr talking to KHL teams … Oilers interested in Lajunen

  • Joe Haggerty via twitter: Indications Haggerty got from Bruins players is that Patrice Bergeron is going to play in Game 2.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: The Red Wings internally talked about acquiring Zach Bogosian at the trade deadline but they didn’t want to breakup the core of a contending team. Jiri Hudler could be a trade candidate this summer, but his $2.875 million salary could be tough to move unless they take back another contract. Khan wonders if  the Wings would consider trading Valtteri Filppula? He’s talented but inconsistent and may not ever become the 70 point guy they think he could be.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: Red Wings Kris Draper and Chris Osgood will both ponder retirement this off-season. Mike Modano is 75% on leaning to retirement. Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson is a UFA but would like to re-sign. “I might make more money somewhere else, but I want to stay,” Ericsson said. Drew Miller and Patrick Eaves are also UFA’s and woulds like to stay. Pavel Datsyuk won’t need surgery on his injured wrist.
  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jaromir Jagr has had contract talks with SKA St. Petersburg and other KHL teams. Pascal Dupuis and Mike Rupp’s agent Allan Walsh hasn’t had talks with the Penguins yet but expects “to begin discussions in the near future.”
  • Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal: The Edmonton Oilers are one of a few teams that are interested in Finnish defenseman Ville Lajunen, and have had preliminary discussions with the Oilers. “They told me they must first have their pro (scouting) meetings and then they will make a decision, but there are other teams too,” said Pulliainen.

Boogaard passes away … Barnaby arrested … Osgood likely to retire … Why Radulov could be back with the Preds

New York Rangers forward Derek Boogaard passed away last night at the age 28. He was found dead in his Minneapolis apartment by his brothers. Michael Russo of the Star Tribune writes and excellent piece about the Boogeyman and is a must read. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the his family and friends.

  • T.J. Pignataro of the Buffalo News: Former Buffalo Sabres and current ESPN/TSN analyst will be arraigned this morning on multiple charges from a domestic violence incident. He’s being charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass, harassment, criminal contempt and aggravated harassment.
  • Chris Johnston of the Globe and Mail: Ken Hitchcock is ready to coach in the NHL again. 5 teams are currently looking for a new head coach. He has been linked to the New Jersey devils. Also looking for a head coach are Ottawa, Minnesota, Dallas and Florida.
  • Greg Krupa of the Detroit News: Krupa thinks the biggest need for the Red Wings this off-season is add some scoring. The best UFA fits may be Marco Sturm, Radim Vrbata and Brooks Laich, with Laich probably being the best fit.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: Whether or not Alexander Radulov returns to the NHL next season is still unknown. Chesnokov thinks it’s a real possibility that he’ll be back with the Predators next year. He was the KHL MVP last year, and won the championship this year. He plays for Salavat Yulaev, and the team has been backed by the local government in the oil rich region of the Republic of Bashkortostan. But the financial backing “will be cut considerably.” KHL teams rely on sponsorship and other fundings as gate receipts don’t generate a lot. KHL contracts are not guaranteed, both the player or team can terminate at any time. “KHL contracts don’t contain “out” clauses.” With the financial situation in Salavat, it’s likely both sides could reach a mutual agreement to terminate the contact. 11 other players won’t be returning to the team.

Injury notes on Hiller, Parise, Eriksson, Anderson, Drury and Osgood

Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller, out since the all-star break with symptoms of dizziness, has been feeling better and is taking limited shots from teammates. “I kind of want to definitely push but I guess I have to pace myself also a little bit, not to over-do it. It’s a little tough to pace myself when I feel better. Just mentally knowing that it’s going in the right direction is definitely a huge relief.”

Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: On Zach Parise,

“He’s right on course,” said Lamoriello. “He’s skating as we speak in fact. We’ll see where he’s at. He’s not cleared to practice yet with the team, but he’s doing things on his own with the coaching staff. There is no timetable at this point. It’ll be when everyone is in agreement that it’s the right time.”

Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars winger Loui Eriksson is listed as day-to-day after a hit to the head, will be re-evaluated today, and is doubtful for tonight’s game. Steve Ott and Tomas Vincour, also receiving treatment for a hit to the head, are probable for tonight.

Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators goalie Craig Anderson missed practice yesterday with an undisclosed injury, and may not be able to start tonight. If not, Curtis McElhinney will make the start. Anderson’s injury occurred sometime during Tuesday’s game.

Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Rangers forward Chris Drury was initially expected to miss 6 weeks after knee surgery, which would be up next Friday, hasn’t even begun skating yet.

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood was taken off the IR on Monday, but said yesterday morning that he is not ready to go yet. Joey MacDonald has been called up to backup Howard.

Richards could go tonight … Lidstom could return next season … Jovo skates … Morrison could be done for year

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards will take the morning skate with the Stars, and if all goes well, he’ll be in the lineup tonight. “You don’t want to get ahead of yourself, and I certainly know the process and what we have to go through, but as far as I’m concerned, I’m going to the arena tomorrow morning as a player,” Richards said [yesterday].
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Kulfan thinks that Lidstrom could win the Norris this year, and with the Red Wings still Stanley Cup contenders, he’s likely to return next season. Chris Osgood will be thinking about retiring after the season, but Kulfan also wouldn’t be surprised if he comes back for one more season.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators need to re-sign Craig Anderson to hold the fort until Robin Lehner is ready. Jared Cowen and David Rundblad could be ready to make the jump to the NHL next year, and that could leave Filip Kuba and Brian Lee on the outside. Lee has a salary at $875,000, so he could be trade bait. Kuba makes $3.7 million, and if they can’t move him, he could be bought out.
  • Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Ed Jovanovski skated for the 1st time on Tuesday since having orbital bone surgery. He was wearing a face shield, and he hopes to return before the end of the season. Martin Hanzel, Ray Whitney and Derek Morris all missed last night’s game with lower body injuries and are day-to-day.
  • Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets forward Derick Brassard has been cleared to return to the lineup, and is a game time decision. He’s had a hand injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the last 3 weeks.
  • Jess Myers of the Denver Post: John-Michael Liles left night’s game after playing just over 2 minutes. “I think it was a quad injury, a leg injury. We’ll know more in the morning. He wasn’t able to return,” said Avalanche coach Joe Sacco.
  • George Johnson of the Calgary Herald: Flames center Brendan Morrison told media he’s uncertain about his availability for the remainder of the season, playoffs included. “We still have some swelling in the knee and it’ll probably be another two or three weeks before we get a solid evaluation,’’ he said on Tuesday. “We’re optimistic that I can hopefully come back but we’re not going to know until everything settles down and we test it. We just have to wait and see.’’
  • Eric Stephens via twitter: The Ducks have signed Luca Sbisa for 4 years, and $8.7 million contract extension. He’ll carry a $2.175 million cap hit, with annual salaries of $1.2 million, $2 million, $2.6 million, and $2.9 million.
  • Katie Carrera via twitter: Both Backstrom and Neuvirth didn’t skate yesterday, more should be known about their injuries today.

Bogosian not happy in Atlanta … Bruins looking at 9 Dmen … Kovalev days in OTT could be numbered … Arnott undecided about waiving no trade

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Though he hasn’t officially asked for a trade, it’s been noted that Thrashers defenseman Zach Bogosian isn’t happy in Atlanta and may like a change of scenery by next year.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Multiple reports are saying the Maple Leafs and Bruins are discussing a Tomas Kaberle trade. This will likely be the last chance Burke has to get an asset back for Kaberle as it’s unlikely he would re-sign with the Leafs.
  • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: The Bruins have added some depth with 3rd liner Chris Kelly, should now turn their focus to adding a much needed defenseman. The Tomas Kaberle rumors are running rampant. “Tomas Kaberle has not waived his no-trade clause concerning Boston,” Burke said. GM Peter Chiarelli said they have a list of 9 defenseman.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie could only come up with 7 of 9 defenseman that the Boston Bruins could be interested in: Tomas Kaberle, Joni Pitkanen, Eric Brewer, Bryan McCabe, Chris Phillips, Ed Jovanovski, Zach Bogosian.
  • Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks that if the Dallas Stars continue to drop in the standings they have to trade Brad Richards (if his head injury is minor).
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards didn’t fly with the team and will not play tonight against Calgary. Coach Marc Crawford said he’ll be re-evaluated today, and could join the team before Saturday’s game.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Senators GM Bryan Murray said this morning that he hope to make “one or two more” trades and there is nothing new on the Chris Phillips front.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Alex Kovalev realizes that his days as an Ottawa Senator could be coming to an end and he’s not letting the rumors bother him. “I’ve been around for a long time, I’ve been traded a few times, so it’s not new for me,” Kovalev said of the constant trade speculation surrounding himself and several teammates. “The job is still the same, to be a hockey player and help whatever team (you’re) playing for.”
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Jason Arnott is still pondering about waiving his no-trade clause. He wants to play in the playoffs this year, but the Devils are on quite the run and may feel they have a shot if it continues. Arnott has talked to Lamoriello ‘in theory’ about waiving it, with the Penguins, Canadiens, and Capitals rumored to be interested.

“We’ve still got a long way to go and I think it will be a little more clear more towards the deadline,” he told me today. “If we win every game from now until the deadline, it’s going to be a real tough decision because then I’ve got to gamble on whether we’re going to win out, win the rest of the season or try to get on a playoff team. As it gets closer, it will become more clear and we’ll see what we do.”

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Despite all their injuries to their blueline, McKenzie doesn’t think the Canucks are in the market for a defenseman.
  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: With the acquisition of Kris Versteeg, look for the Flyers to shop either Daniel Carcillo or Jody Shelley.
  • Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: The Panthers could look to move Cory Stillman, he’d like to stay but realizes a trade could happen. “There’s always an uneasy feeling that it’s happened once before, it could happen again,’’ said Stillman, who has eight 20-plus goal seasons. “My goal coming here almost three years ago was to help put the team in a playoff spot with a chance to win.
  • Capgeek.com: Dustin Byfuglien 5 year, $26 million contract extension carries a $5.2 million cap hit. He was making $3 million this year. Capgeek is showing that he has yearly salaries of $4.25 million, $4.25 million, $5.75 million, $5.75 million, and $6 million.
