Devils could file for arbitration with Parise … Lightning have 12 free agents … Ballard would be tough to move … Maloney not losing sleep over replacing Bryzgalov

  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Devils winger Zach Parise said there is still “nothing” going on with contract discussions. Gulitti thinks it seems likely that the Devils will file for “team-elected arbitration” next week. This would prevent other teams from signing Parise to an offer sheet. When Lou was asked about it, “That’s something we’d never talk about.” Even if they file for arbitration, the sides can still work on a new deal.

“I’m sure that nobody wants that to happen,” Parise said. “No one wants it to drag out all the way to arbitration. I don’t think a player wants to go to arbitration. I don’t think an organization wants to take someone to arbitration at the end of the day. Maybe something like that happens, but of course we don’t want to.”

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: It looks like the Bruins could let Tomas Kaberle walk, and Michael Ryder could be kept. Both players are likely to get offers but at a discounted price. Kaberle is a $4.25 million cap hit, Ryder is at $4 million.
  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: The Lightning have 12 free agents, and GM Steve Yzerman said that he probably can’t bring everyone back. He’s told a some players that there are a few contracts he has to do first before he can get to them. On UFA defenseman Eric Brewer,

“He played very well for us,” Yzerman said. “We intend to offer him a contract. It all comes down to how much we can afford to pay for the position and how much the player is asking. We haven’t had those discussions yet. But at my end-of-the-year meeting, he indicated he enjoyed playing here in Tampa and is interested in exploring signing an extension with us.”

Yzerman has been playing “phone tag” with Steven Stamkos’s agent,

“We want (Stamkos) to be a Lightning player for a long time and our intention is to reach an agreement that works for all the parties involved.”

The Lightning will likely want to sign Dwayne Roloson, Mike Smith, Sean Bergenheim and Teddy Purcell. Simon Gagne could be down the contract priority list.

  • Erik Erlendsson via twitter: If Brewer isn’t re-signed, Erlendsson thinks they will look at Kevin Bieksa or Christian Ehrhoff, “those type of UFAs”
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Coyotes GM Don Maloney needs to find a number 1 center, but was pleased with Kyle Turris’s play against Detroit in the 1st round. Kris Draper may be finding himself on the outside, as there isn’t really room for him on the Red Wings roster next season. He may retire and take a management job similar to what Kirk Maltby did last year. Alex Radulov’s KHL team is in financial trouble which could bode well for the Predators.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson wonders if it’s possible that Tim Thomas wins the Conn Smythe Trophy even if the Bruins lose. Keith Ballard’s days in Vancouver may be numbered as he’s fallen to 9th on their depth chart. Moving Ballard’s contract would be difficult as he has 3 years at $4.2 million per year. Coyotes GM Maloney hopes the Flyers work out a deal with Ilya Bryzgalov so that they can acquire another assets that was conditional in the trade. On a replacement for Bryzgalov,

“There’s some really good up-and-comers, ready for prime time as a No. 1 slot,” said Maloney. “For the right young goaltender who’s 23, 24, 25, who we could keep for five or six years, there’s a price. You weigh that against the UFA market. There’s some experienced, very good goaltenders. I’m not losing sleep over this.”

The Minnesota Wild may not name their new coach until draft week, Craig MacTavish may be the leading candidate. The Coyotes have to re-sign Keith Yandle but may let Ed Jovanovski walk. Matheson thinks the Oilers should sign Zenon Konopka.

Blues may be shutout for UFA’s … Jackets dangling #8 … Richards rumors … Flyers should go after Thomas again … Leafs were in on Erixon

  • Roger Hensley of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Jeremy Rutherford notes that until the Blues are sold or new investors are brought in, they can’t afford a “legitimate” free agent goal scorer. With the free agent crop a little week, Blues fans shouldn’t expect them to be as active as they may like. Dan O’Neill doesn’t think a goal scorer is the Blues biggest off-season need. Andy Strickland thinks the Blues could explore the trade market. They would have to shed some salary if they were to take on a player like Paul Stastny.
  • Larry Brooks of USA Today: Brad Richards will likely be looking for a long term deal at $7+ million a season, which may be more than the Rangers want to do. Richards may take less to return to Tampa. The Rangers could look at Jason Spezza who has 3 years at a $7 million cap hit, though he has a no-trade clause and the Sens may want too much in return. Stephen Weiss will also draw the Rangers interest. The Rangers were interested in Patrick Sharp last year, but he may not be available and/or would require a lot. Brandon Dubinsky wants a multi-year deal at $4.5 million per season.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The scouting department for the Columbus Blues Jackets is likely to be completely reconfigured after the draft at the end of the month. Most of their scouts contracts expire at the end of the month, and their contracts haven’t been renewed. If the Blues Jackets are going to trade their 8th overall pick at this year’s draft, don’t rule out the Flyers as an interested partner. Both GM’s have talked on and off since early last year.
  • Chuck Gormley of the Delco Times: Gormley thinks the Flyers should go after Tim Thomas again this off-season. Over a year ago the Bruins wanted Jeff Carter in return for Thomas. Both teams don’t have a lot of free cap space. The Flyers could send Matt Carle and his $3.4 million salary but it would take more. They don’t have a 1st or 2nd round pick this year. Gormley thinks Carle and Kris Versteeg could get the deal done.
  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: Could the Tampa Bay Lightning fit Brad Richards in even though they need to re-sign RFA Steven Stamkos and possibly UFA Eric Brewer? The Lightning have $38.37 million tied up in 11 players and buyouts. Free agents they may want to re-sign are Sean Bergenheim, Teddy Purcell, Dwayne Roloson and Mike Smith. Yzerman could also make some trades to free up some salary. If Simon Gagne would take a nice pay cut from the $5.25 million he made last season, they may be more willing to re-sign him. If they don’t re-sign Gagne, they could use that money towards Richards.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: If the dollar amount and term get out of hand for Brad Richards, Stephen Weiss could be plan B for the NY Rangers. The Red Wings could be an option for Richards if he’s interested in a short-term, cap friendly number. The Rangers, Kings and Leafs will likely be offering more.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Herald: According to Maple Leafs source, they were in on Tim Erixon trade talks with the Flames before he was traded to the NY Rangers. Francis thinks the Sharks should go after UFA Kevin Bieksa. Bieksa is “most apt” to take a hometown discount to remain with the Canucks. Christian Ehrhoff will likely go after the most money, and it’s unlikely the Bruins will want to re-sign Tomas Kaberle.

Winnipeg press conference for 11 am Central, 12 pm Eastern … Lightning off-season notes … Panthers sign Skille

  • Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Christian Ehrhoff and Aaron Rome will be in the lineup for Game 1. Ehrhoff suffered what looked to be a shoulder injury in Game 3 against the Sharks. Rome was dazed in Game 3 after a hit from behind.
  • The Fourth Period: Steven Stamkos’s agent told The Fourth Period that he’ll be discussing a multi-year deal with the Lightning “in the near future.” They could work on a 5 year deal.
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins won’t be signing 2009 draft picks, center Andy Bathgate and Dman Viktor Ekbom. Bathgate was a 5th round pick and recorded 60 point in 64 games with Belleville of the OHL. He’s missed a lot of time with a shoulder injury the last 2 1/2 years. Ekbom was a 6th round pick, recording 8 assists in 96 games the last 2 seasons with Linkoping in Sweden’s Eletserien. Both will re-enter the draft.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Senators signed prospects Jakub Silfverberg and Louie Caporusso to entry level deals yesterday. Silfverberg was a 2nd round pick in 2009, and Caporusso was playing at the University of Michigan.

Recchi to retire if Bruins win the Cup … Red Wings off-season options … Could Rangers look at Weiss

  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Pronvince: If the Bruins win the Stanley Cup, Mark Recchi will retire.

“Yes, I will,” Recchi said Sunday from Boston as his Bruins prepare for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks. “If we win, there’s definitely no doubt I’m going to walk away. I want to stay in the game and work with a general manager and learn the development side of the game. I think I understand some parts as a player.”

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Rumors are that the Red Wings will use the $6 million from the retired Brian Rafalski to go after Predators Dman Shea Weber, though Dupont thinks the Predators would match. The salary cap could be going up around 6-7%, from $59.4 million to around $63.5 million.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson thinks the Canucks should sign Kevin Bieksa over Christian Ehrhoff. Matheson proposes a trade and wonders if the Flames would do it, Devin Setoguchi and Jason Demers for Robyn Regehr.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson thinks the wings need to get younger to push Todd Bertuzzi and Tomas Holmstrom. Jiri Hudler may be trade bait. The best free agent options for them could be Brooks Laich and Ville Leino, with Alex Tanguay as a possibility. WHL MVP and recently signed goalie Darcy Kuemper will likely start next season in the AHL. The Wild could go with German goalie Dennis Endras as Niklas Backstom’s backup, letting Jose Theodore and Josh Harding go as UFA’s. Matheson thinks the Wild should trade Backstrom and keep Theodore, but his $6 million price tag makes it extremely difficult.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks wonders if the NY Rangers are unable to bring in Brad Richards, they might look to Florida and Stephen Weiss.

Malhotra plans for Game 1 … Wings looking for Dman … Crosby to be re-evaluated … Another group interested in Thrashers

  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Manny Malhotra has been given medical clearance and is preparing to play in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. 11 weeks ago he nearly lost his eye. “Everything is as it should be,” Malhotra said of the eye. “Going forward, I will continue to be monitored daily and if at any time the doctor doesn’t like what he sees, he has the ultimate veto power,” Malhotra said. Malhotra is expected to take Cody Hodgson’s spot as the 4th line center.
  • Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit News: The Red Wings will now be looking for a top defenseman after Rafalski’s unexpected retirement. “The market isn’t as strong, but we’re only looking for one guy,” Holland said. “If a player’s not out there or doesn’t want to buy into the program, we’ll look at an alternative plan. Do you go a touch higher than you want? Yeah. But we’re not going to go dramatically higher than what we think makes sense.” UFA’s that might interest the Wings are Kevin Bieksa, Christian Ehrhoff, Joni Pitkanen, Ed Jovanovski, James Wisniewski, Roman Hamrlik, Ian White and Tomas Kaberle.
  • Fan 590 Audio: Ken Holland talks on Prime Time Sports (Thursday) talking about Rafalski’s retirement and what it means for their blueline.
  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby will be re-evaluated by a concussion specialist in the next week or so. Crosby has been vacationing in Europe, needs clearance from doctors before he can resume his off-season workouts. The Penguins won’t be re-signing Alex Kovalev or Mike Comrie. Comrie could retire, “I’m not sure what Mike’s going to do,” Shero said. “He might be leaning toward retirement.” Shero didn’t rule out re-signing any of their UFA’s: Max Talbot, Pascal Dupuis, Mike Rupp, Craig Adams, Arron Asham, Eric Godard, Chris Conner and Nick Johnson.
  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Chris Osgood is “100 percent healthy” but a decision on his playing future is still not known.  “He’s going through the internal process to decide if he has the energy and the desire and determination to play hockey again,” Holland said. “In the middle of June, we’ll look at the goalies that are out there, we’re going to try and figure out a way to be the best team that we can.”
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Another group stepped forward with interest in buying the Thrashers and keeping the team in Atlanta. Statement from president Don Waddell.

“Along with all other groups who have expressed an interest in pursuing an ownership opportunity, which has happened as recently as earlier this week, we have said continuously that ‘until an agreement is signed and approved by the board of governors, it’s never too late but they will have to move very quickly and decisively.  Ownership still is committed to selling at a greatly reduced price to anyone committed to Atlanta.’  ”

3 Big Free Agents For The Coyotes That Could Alter Their Look

Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: There are 3 key parts to the Phoenix Coyotes that are free agents, 2 are unrestricted and 1 is restricted. Ilya Bryzgalov (UFA) will be looking for a big raise from his previous 3 year, $12.75 million deal. GM Don Maloney said the team won’t break the bank for 1 player. If Bryzgalov signs for a “hometown discout”, it would give the Coyotes more options for bringing in other players or re-signing their own. Keith Yandle is a restricted free agent and will be wanting a big raise from his current deal which paid him $1.2 million. He’ll be looking for a long-term deal, and Maloney has maintained he’ll be back. Ed Jovanovski would have to take a pay cut to return to the Coyotes, $6.5 million last year. If he leaves, he would free up several millions. The Coyotes total payroll will likely be around the $56 million range. They have 13 total free agents, 8 are unrestricted, so they could be a totally different looking team next year. 3 other UFA’s are Radim Vrbata, Vernon Fiddler and Eric Belanger. Players who could be good fits for the Coyotes are Jussi Jokinen (Car), Ville Leino (Phi) and Brooks Laich (Was). The Coyotes could trade the rights to Ilya Bryzgalov if they feel they can’t get him re-signed and gamble on Jason LaBarbera. Tomas Vokoun is likely too expensive to bring in. Mike Smith has some potential. UFA defenseman that could fit are Christian Ehrhoff, Kevin Bieksa and James Wisniewski.

Take a look at all potential Unrestricted free agents, Restricted free agents, and our Top 25 UFA’s.

Bergenheim doubtful … Ehrhoff and Rome ready for Finals … Malhotra cleared for contact … Calgary, Ottawa, and New Jersey coaching notes

  • Corey Masisak via twitter: Lightning coach Guy Boucher says that though Sean Bergenheim has improved but he’s “doubtful” for tonight.
  • Dhiren Mahiban of NHL.com: Canucks coach Alain Vigneault expects both Christian Ehrhoff and Aaron Rome back in the lineup for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The only way Bryan McCabe returns to the Rangers next season would be if he’d take a big pay cut from the $4.15 million he made last year, and that may still not be enough.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Talk that Craig Hartsburg could leave Everett (WHL) and join the Flames alongside Brent Sutter.
  • David Pagnotta via twitter: The Devils haven’t officially spoken with Ken Hitchcock about their vacant head coaching position, could happen next week.

Roloson to start … Thornton played with separated shoulder … Red Wings options … Leafs and Richards … A Souray buyout coming?

  • Darren Dreger via twitter: “Sorry Wpg, it’s inching closer, but there still is no firm deal with ASG and there will not be an announcement today. From a key source.” Bob McKenzie via twitter: “As for WPG, principals still grinding out detail work. Hearing Thurs as earliest possible date for announcement, perhaps Fri or later.”
  • Brian Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Brian Rafalski will retire at an 11 am press conference. The Wings now have an extra $6 million to work with this summer. Possible free agent defenseman the Red Wings could look at are Canucks Kevin Bieksa, Sami Salo and Christian Ehrhoff, Joni Pitkanen (Car), Tomas Kaberle (Bos), Ed Jovanovski (Pho), Eric Brewer (TB) and Scott Hannan (Was). RFA’s that would require multiple 1st round picks in an offer are Drew Doughty and Shea Weber.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: If Nicklas Lidstrom returns to the Red Wings, he’ll join Niklas Kronwall, Brad Stuart, and Jakub Kindl. Jonathan Ericsson might be brought back as they have a bit more financial flexibility with Rafalski retiring, but they won’t overpay for him. Ruslan Salei is likely done with the Wings. 2007 1st round pick Brendan Smith has a shot at making the team. They could bring in 35 year old Ed Jovanovski to eat up minutes. Kevin Bieksa could be another option, as well as Joni Pitkanen, Sami Salo, Eric Brewer, Tomas Kaberle, Bryan McCabe and Roman Hamrlik.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Lidstom will let the Red Wings know of his plan to retire or to come back again likely before the NHL draft.
  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs want to be in the Brad Richards sweepstakes. It has been suggested that Burke could possibly offer a deal in the 7 or 8 year range, which goes against his usual philosophy. Richards could get more than $7 million, possibly up to $8 million. The Rangers or Kings might consider offering more. Without having an owner and coach in place, it would be difficult for Nieuwendyk to re-sign Richards. The Leafs could look to acquire his rights before July 1st, but not if it requires them to send Nazem Kadri the other way.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers are considering options again with regards to defenseman Sheldon Souray. He’s still owed $4.5 million with a $5.4 million cap hit. They could buy him out after June 15th for 2/3′s salary, cap hit spread out over 2 years. He could also be sent to the minors. The Oilers are still pursuing Swedish goalie Viktor Fasth and are interested in Finnish Dman Ville Lajunen. Zach Stortini could be traded by the entry draft.
  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Blues forward David Perron is making some progress with his post-concussion syndromes.

“We’ve talked to David, and he’s feeling better, but he’s not at the point where he’s coming back to St. Louis to take the necessary tests before he can train,” Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said. “He’s taking small steps ahead, but not to the point where he has passed his tests to begin his summer training program.”

Armstrong had said that if Perron still have symptoms in July, they would have to plan to start the season without him.

Jagr not considering NHL … No Ehrhoff at skate … Brian Burke video – talks prospects and draft

  • Ben Kuzma via twitter: Canucks defenseman Christian Ehrhoff (shoulder) not taking part in the pre-game skate.
  • Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke – Leafs looking at packaging a 1st (1 of 2) and 2nd (39th) to move up in the draft. Will draft best player available and not by position. Also focusing on adding a number one center, if can’t get one in free agency, will look at trades.

Ehrhoff and Rome out for Canucks … Not much of turnout for Thrashers “select-a-seat” … Blackhawks notes

  • Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Christian Ehrhoff and Aaron Rome are  likely to be replaced by Keith Ballard and Andrew Alberts. Christian Ehrhoff possibly separated his shoulder in the 1st period of Game 3. Aaron Rome may have a concussion.
  • George Henry of the Globe and Mail: Only 200 Thrashers fans turned out for Atlanta’s “select-a-seat” event in which potential and current season’s ticket holders can check out the seats, look at the ice and talk about the draft. “We’ve been lied to for six years,” Jenn Peters, 30, said while choking back tears as she flipped through a collection of ticket stubs. “It’s hard to watch as a fan because there’s nothing you can do but show up. You can voice your opinion and you can show up, but that’s all you can do.” The Thrashers website didn’t promote the event.
  • Andy Strickland via twitter: A current Atlanta Thrasher only knows what everyone else does and is waiting for some announcement to let the players know what’s going on.
  • Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago: The Blackhawks have 16 players under contact for about $54 million for next season. They are expected to re-sign Michael Frolik and Chris Campoli. The chances of re-signing UFA Tomas Kopecky are slim, and they may not be able to afford Troy Brouwer. It’s likely that one or more of their RFA’s will be traded and if they could move one of Brian Campbell or Niklas Hjalmarsson, it would free up some cap space. It would be hard for them to move Campbell due to his salary, but at 23 Hjalmarsson could get some interest.
  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Red Wings GM Ken Holland needs to find a way to trade Jiri Hudler and his $2.875 million contract. It would have the Wings some extra cap room for free agency.

Lidstrom to mull future … Bieksa or Ehrhoff? Bryzgalov’s agent to meet with Coyotes … Flyers could trade Carter

  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Red Wings defenseman Niklas Lidstrom will meet with GM Ken Holland in a few weeks, then mull over the decision to retire or not for few weeks. He will likely reach a decision before July 1st.

“I’m going to take my time on my decision here in the next little while,” said Lidstrom after Thursday’s 3-2 loss. “I’m now sure how long it’ll take but we’ll have our year-end meetings and go on from there.”

  • Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: The Canucks salary cap number for next year sits around $44 million, and they may have trouble affording both Kevin Bieksa and Christian Ehrhoff. Both will be UFA’s and looking to make some good money next year. Ehrhoff is coming off a 50 point season and will likely be looking for money than Bieksa. Bieksa might take a hometown discount.
  • Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Ilya Bryzgalov’s agent and Coyotes GM Don Maloney will be today.

“We’d like to sign him to a contract that makes sense to him and sense to us, but he may want more than what we’re prepared to pay. If that’s the case, then we’ll have to deal with it if it comes down to it.”

  • Will DePaoli via twitter: The Penguins have yet to set timetables to talk with any of their pending UFA’s or RFA Tyler Kennedy.
  • Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun Times: Blackhawks winger Troy Brouwer underwent shoulder surgery on Tuesday to repair a labral tear. He’s expected to be ready by next season. He’s also a RFA who made $1.050 million last year. His goal production dropped to 17 last year, but he did record 262 hits.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Ville Leino recorded 53 points for the Flyers last year, and if he wants more than $3.2 million, he likely won’t be back with the Flyers next year. He turned down 3 and 4 year deals worth $9 and $12 million back in February. Team chairman Ed Snider recently said they need to trade some players to gain cap space. Jeff Carter and his $5.27 million cap hit is the most likely candidate, with the Maple Leafs as one of the teams that would be interested. His contract runs 11 years.

Richards being patient … Lydman has surgery, Sutton struggled … Sabres could use a veteran D … Quick playoff notes

  • Mark Stepneski of the ESPN Dallas: Brad Richards is being patient with his decision to hit the free agent market on July 1st.

“Right now there is no deadline in sight because July 1 is so far away,” Richards said. “It’s try to get my body back to normal, relax and think things over and give it a chance over there in Dallas to see what happens with ownership. It sounds like things are moving a little bit right now. We’ll see. Sometimes you hear things differently than what’s actually happening. At least there is some movement and talk.”

The Stars could have a new owner, Tom Gaglardi, by early June.

“When it’s closer to a deadline or a time where you have to make a decision, that might be a time to think about what’s going to happen in the future,” he said. “Right now, there are no worries in my mind to do anything because there is no rush.”

  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman had surgery to repair a torn labrum on his right shoulder. It’s expected to be a 5 month recovery, so he might not be ready for the start of the season. He had been playing with the injury for over 2 months.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks defenseman Andy Sutton,

“It was the worst year of my career,” he said. ”It was frustrating. Really, I think I just didn’t really recover after I had the hand surgery. I felt like I was constantly slipping down the mountain, couldn’t regain my footing and lost a lot of confidence. It sort of left me not playing like myself.”

It’s likely he’ll be back the with the Ducks next season, he’s owed $2.25 million. It would be tough finding a trade partner, and he’d be owed $750,000 for the next 2 seasons if they were to buy him out.

  • Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News: The Sabres new owner Terry Pegula seems to understands the importance of veteran defenseman, and maybe he’ll provide the funds to enable them to bring in someone. Potential UFA’s are James Wisniewski, Tomas Kaberle, Kevin Bieksa and Christian Ehrhoff. The Canucks likely won’t be able to afford both Bieksa and Ehrhoff.
  • Randy Phillips of the Montreal Gazette: Mathieu Darche is 1 of 9 UFA’s for the Montreal Canadiens,

“It’s been 10 years that I’ve ended a season with a question mark over my head,” the 34-year-old forward said. “Obviously, I want to be back, but at this point it’s not entirely in my control.

“I’ll see what they have to say and I’m sure we’ll talk soon,” he added. “That’s where it is right now. We’ll deal with it as it comes.”

  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The San Jose Sharks switched up their lines at practice yesterday, though not sure if they will be the same for today’s game. Couture-Thornton-Setoguchi and Clowe-Marleau-Heatley.

Caps to find out soon if Green can return, could use 2 goalies in playoffs … Ehrhoff will be looking for raise … ‘Hawks – Crawford talking extension

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green has missed 18 of their last 20 games with a concussion. He hasn’t taken part in a full practice in about a month. He has been doing some off-ice workouts and is feeling better.

“In a perfect world, we’d like to get him back for the last couple [regular season] games,” Boudreau said. “I think this week will indicate this — by Monday, we’ll know whether we’ll be able to or not.

“We want him in at least three practices, good practices, before we ever put him in a game — minimum,” Boudreau said. “Quite frankly, I play him when [head athletic trainer] Greg Smith says he’s OK to play. I’ll be the first one to put him in.”

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said this week that there is a chance they will use both Michal Neuvirth and Semyon Varlamov during the playoffs.

“I think if you look at the way the season and their careers have gone, that neither one has played 20 games in a row [in the NHL], you’re probably looking more at winning by committee than anything else,” Boudreau said. “If one gets extremely hot, you’re not going to take him out of the lineup. But in our situation here, we’ve seen, I think, [six] in a row the maximum that either one has played all year.”

  • Brad Zeimer of the Vancouver Canucks: Canucks defenseman Christian Ehrhoff is having an excellent season and he’ll be a UFA at seasons end. He’s currently making $3.1 million and will be looking for a raise. On the open market he’d likely could get $5 million deal, which could be out of the Canucks price range. If he’ll take closer to the $4.5 million they are giving to Dan Hamhuis, he could stay. His wife and daughter love Vancouver.
  • Chris Boden of CSNChicago: The Blackhawks have begun talking RFA goalie Cory Crawford about a contract extension.

“We’ve reached out and we’re gonna try to do something here,” Bowman said in the United Center’s Harris Club. “The timing is delicate and you don’t want it to become a distraction but we certainly have an interest in trying to get something done. I think he’s performed very well for us this year. Looking back from where he’s come – not only having a foothold in the NHL at the beginning, when he started a handful of games, but watching his progression as he’s gotten more responsibility, he’s risen to the challenge. That’s what you look for in goaltenders. When they get the increased workload, can they handle it? He’s kind of unflappable and doesn’t get rattled by much. I think that’s a strength of his. He’s obviously talented. He’s got the physical capabilities, but the mental side is important as well, and he’s been rock-solid for us.”

  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller was back in net last night for the first time since the middle of February. It didn’t last 12 minutes, 3 goals on 9 shots, but at least his bouts with vertigo weren’t the reason he was pulled from the game.
  • Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: Waiver pickup Curtis McElhinny is enjoying his time in Ottawa, and wouldn’t mind returning next season. “Right now there’s a tremendous opportunity here,” he said. “They’ve signed (Craig Anderson) for the next four years, but I still think there’s a spot for me, too.”

Roy could be return this year … Sens want to re-sign Anderson … Canucks UFA Dmen … Lou hoping for Parise return

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres center, Derek Roy, out since Dec. 23rd with a torn quad, could return this season. Though he may not be ready until mid-May, if the Sabres made it deep into round 2 or the conference finals, he could return.
  • Darren Dreger of TSN: The Senators are interested in re-signing Craig Anderson, but he may want to see how the restructing in Ottawa goes before committing. Robin Lehner will be given the opportunity to make the team next year, but may spend most of the year in the AHL.
  • Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Kevin Bieksa, Christian Ehrhoff, Sami Salo and Andrew Alberts will all be UFAs for the Vancouver Canucks after the season. They have Dan Hamhuis, Keith Ballard, Alex Edler and Aaron Rome signed for next year at a cap hit of $12.7 million. They may look at signing either Bieksa or Ehrhoff (Ehrhoff more likely) for around $5 million on a long term deal, and possibly Salo on a shorter term, less money deal. If either Bieksa or Ehrhoff want to much money, they could sign the other guy.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devil GM Lou Lamoriello on a possible Zach Parise return this season, “I would hope so, but let’s wait and see,” Lamoriello said. “Zach is progressing daily.” The Devils could also get Defenseman Matt Corrente (shoulder) back this year, he’s been skating for over 2 weeks.
  • Louis Jean of Sportsnet: Lightning forward Simon Gagne met with a neck specialist on Friday and won’t be in the lineup on Saturday. He received an injection for a pinched nerve and needs to rest for 4 days.

Leino and Flyers working on a deal … Moving Senators … Callahan, Prospal activated … Cox’s plan for Leafs … Weber options

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers and Ville Leino continue talks and agent, Bill Zito texted, “I am optimistic we’ll get a deal done.” The Flyers have about $4.1 million in ‘tagging’ space for next season. Leino is making $825,000 this season and could be looking for a deal in the $2.3 million range. Other Flyers UFA’s are Brian Boucher, Sean O’Donnell, and Nik Zherdev. RFA’s are Dan Carcillo, Andreas Nodl, and Darroll Powe. James van Riemsdyk is nursing a groin injury but should be ready to go after the break.
  • Ottawa Sun: Garrioch was originally surprised the Senators didn’t put a waiver claim on Evgeni Nabokov. They contacted his agent and found out he wouldn’t go to Ottawa. Brennan thinks they can find someone who’d be interested in Sergei Gonchar, and points out that if they find a team to take Filip Kube, that GM should be fired.  Garrioch thinks Jarrko Ruutu will be traded, and that the Bruins should take a run at Chris Phillips. They’ll listen to offers for Mike Fisher.
  • Darren Dreger via twtter: Dreger talked to Fisher’s agent who said he hasn’t submitted a list of teams that he’d okay/not okay a trade to, and won’t until he’s asked.
  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The NY Rangers activated Ryan Callahan and Vinny Prospal from the IR and sent Michael Del Zotto, Brodie Dupont, Evgeny Grachev, Chad Kolarik and Kris Newbury back to the AHL.
  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Heading into the all-star break Cox makes 2 points (1) That James Reimer is the teams best goalie at the moment and should continue to play for the big club. (2) “this notion that the Leafs will be looking to add talent by next month’s trade deadline for some kind of late-season playoff run is at best fanciful and at worst incomprehensible.” They should sell off and acquire futures. The team should look to improve for next fall, acquiring prospects or draft picks.
  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Kevin Bieksa is putting together a solid season, and may force the Canucks into deciding to either re-sign him or Christian Ehrhoff, both will be UFA’s after the season. “I’ve got more,” Bieksa said. “I’d love to be here. Love to finish my career here. Maybe the feeling is mutual.”
  • Ed Willis of the Vancouver Province: Shea Weber will be a RFA at the end of the season, and may start thinking at a change of scenery may be good after not getting past the 1st round of the playoffs in 5 years (4 times in the playoffs). Many pieces have been traded off, and the team has trouble getting to the next level.  He could  tell the team (could, not has), “Look, I’ve given you six good seasons. I’m going to be unrestricted in another season and I’d like to win. Why don’t you move me while you can still get something for me?” The Predators would likely want to lock him up long-term at a reasonable number.

Yzerman won’t trade top draft picks … Canucks Dman update … Salary dump in Ottawa … Semin out 2 games

  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: As the trade deadline approaches, don’t expect Lightning GM Steve Yzerman to include any 1st to 3rd round 2011 or 2012 draft picks to in bring some additional help. Yzerman added “I don’t want to hold myself up to say we’re not going to do anything. But I think it would be very difficult to add without giving something up of great value I wouldn’t want to give up.”
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Though he’s back practicing, there is no guarantee that Sami Salo will play again this year. Canucks GM Gillis told the Sun, “I think people are really jumping the gun,” “For some reason, people want to discount the type of injury he had. He suffered a 95% rupture of his Achilles tendon. There are people who never walk after something like that. We don’t know if he’s going to play. He’s three practices in and it’s going OK, but it’s still a long ways off.” Gillis also said he won’t talk about contract extensions for Kevin Bieksa and Christian Ehrhoff until the season is over.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: 2 sources have told the Sun that the Senators GM Bryan Murray is trying to dump salary. Trade candidates could be Chris Phillips, Filip Kuba, Alex Kovalev, Peter Regin, and Milan Michalek.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Sun: Senators winger Alex Kovalev will miss at least a week with his ongoing knee injury. Mike Fisher is expected to be able to go against the Bruins, he blocked a shot with his knee over the weekend.
  • Ben Kuzma via twitter: Canucks center Ryan Kesler has an injured thumb, but is expecting to play tomorrow.

Connolly out a week … Garon CBJ #1 goalie … Rinne could start Wed. … Preliminary talks for Ehrhoff … Another Waffle tossing video

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Tim Connolly will be out at least a week after having reconstructive surgery on his nose. Connolly was hit into the boards on Satruday, he returned to the game with full face shield. Sabres captain Craig Rivet has been a healthy scratch, and Lindy Ruff left the press conference when asked about it.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Mathieu Garon has taken over the title of the Columbus Blue Jackets number one goalie. Steve Mason has struggled and is looking to regain his confidence.

“I told Matty (Garon) I don’t know how long this is going to last,” Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. “But don’t worry about Vancouver (Thursday’s opponent) until we get done with Calgary. Don’t worry about Chicago (Dec. 26) until we’re done with Vancouver. Just focus on what we need to do. Just focus on beating Calgary tonight.”

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Marco Sturm will make his debut with the LA Kings tonight, but he’ll be eased back into action. Sturm will skate on the 4th line with Trevor Lewis and Alexei Ponikarovsky. Brad Richardson will be on the top line with Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown. Justin Williams will be with Jarret Stoll and Ryan Smyth. Kyle Clifford will be with Michal Handzus and Wayne Simmonds. Oscar Moller was returned to Manchester. Jonathan Quick will start in net.
  • Bryan Mullen via twitter: Pekka Rinne says he’s ready to return and could start on Wednesday against the Blackhawks if coach Trotz makes the call.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: There have been preliminary talks between the Canucks and defenseman Christian Ehrhoff. Ehrhoff is making $3.1 million this season, and will be one of four UFA defenseman for the Canucks, Kevin Bieksa, Sami Salo and Andrew Alberts are the others.

“I definitely want to stay, but there are two sides involved in that,” said Ehrhoff. “I stopped thinking about it [contract] and just try to do my best to help the team. That’s my main focus right now and everything else isn’t. There’s not much I can do other than play good hockey and try not to get distracted by it.”
  • Ron MacGregor of the Globe and Mail: In the past few weeks there may have been several teams who might have considered replacing their coach:  New Jersey (John MacLean), Calgary (Brent Sutter), Minnesota (Todd Richards), Toronto (Ron Wilson), Ottawa (Cory Clouston), Washington (Bruce Boudreau), Anaheim (Randy Carlyle) and Buffalo (Lindy Ruff).
  • Another waffle tossing incident in Toronto last night. Waffle tossing during play isn’t cool.

Changes to Revenue Sharing coming? Caps to play in Russia … Possible returns tonight: Selanne, Johnson, Pietrangelo and Ehrhoff

  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Chris Osgood was originally penciled in to start tonight in Chicago, but a team captain talked Mike Babcock into having him start Osgood on Sunday at home so he could possibly get his 400th win at home.
  • Jake Leonard of the SF Chronicle: Potential suitors for Evgeni Nabokov could be: Philadelphia Flyers, Ottawa Senators, Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche and the Dallas Stars.
  • Helene Elliott via twitter: Matt Green has headed back to LA to get his head looked at. Willie Mitchell is headed to Nashville to see a doctor about a lower body injury.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: After missing the last 4 games with a groin injury, Teemu Selanne is set to re-join his Ducks teammates against the Hurricanes tonight.
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Christian Ehrhoff practiced with Canucks teammates yesterday for the first time since December 8th when he suffered a head injury. It was initially thought to be a concussion but turned out to be a vertigo issue.
  • Mike Ziesberger of the Toronto Sun: There’s a chance that Nazem Kadri will be a healthy scratch tonight versus the Canucks. He was practicing with the 4th line yesterday.

“I need to understand that chipping the puck in is not such a bad thing. The little turnovers at their blue line and at our blue line are things I need to change.

“I’ll get it right. I’ll get my head around it. It caught me off-guard a bit. I’ve been going hard and I think things have been going pretty good but I guess there are things I need to improve.”

  • Chris Botta of the NY Times: The way the league’s revenue sharing works with lower-profile teams could change in the next C.B.A. according to Deputy Commish Bill Daily. In the current C.B.A., teams with TV market of over $2.5 million wouldn’t qualify for revenue sharing, which would include Anaheim, NY Islanders, and NJ Devils.

Pronger injured … Callahan breaks hand … Sutter would do Phaneuf trade again, um what? Sturm targets next Wednesday

  • Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: New York Rangers forward Ryan Callahan broke his hand while blocking a shot. Early word is that he could miss 6 weeks. Todd White will likely return to the lineup tonight in place of Callahan.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Herald: Flames GM Darryl Sutter says he would make the Dion Phaneuf trade over again (in case you forgot the deal was Dion Phaneuf, Freddie Sjostrom, and Keith Aulie for Matt Stajan, Niclas Hagman, Ian White and Jamal Mayers). Sutter said if they didn’t trade Dion, they would have lost Rene Bourque and Mark Giordano. Bourque signed for six years, $20 million and Giordano signed for five years, 20.1 million. To me this doesn’t make sense. Phanuef and Sjostrom carry about a $7.25 million cap hit this year. Stajan is at $3.5 million (crazy deal he signed this summer), Hagman is a $3 million cap hit, and they had signed White to a 1 year, $2.999 million deal before trading him to Carolina. According to my math, that’s almost $9.5 million in salary they added compared $7.5 million heading to Toronto (and I’m not including the money they wasted on signing Jokinen).
  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Taylor Hall’s role with the Edmonton Oilers may expand to include penalty killing. Oilers coach Tom Renney almost did so on Tuesday against the Leafs but decided against it. The Oilers struggles this year allows them to try things they may not otherwise have done.
  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Marco Sturm finally joined his new Kings teammates yesterday for practice. He practiced on the 4th line as he still recovers from knee surgery. He is targeting next Wednesday for his LA Kings debut against the Oilers.
  • Thrash, the Atlanta Thrashers mascot steals team zamboni and goes for a joyride.
