Bruins could be fit for Phillips … Kings re-sign Johnson, Doughty update … Injury notes on Semin, Backstrom, DiPietro and more

  • Rich Hammond of LAKingsInsider: The LA Kings have locked up defenseman Jack Johnson to a 7 year, $30.5 million deal. He has a cap hit of about $4.35 million, he’ll earn $3.5 million for the first 3 seasons, $5 million the final 4. GM Lombardi gives and update on Drew Doughty, who’ll be an RFA at the end of the year,

“We’ve had very kick-the-tire discussions on Drew. Part of it was gauging where his play was. Again, Drew is two or three years younger than Jack, so there is a greater period there of growth. We can let it play out a little. We’re obviously going to sign him, and term is not an issue. Now that Jack is in, it gives us a little reference point. Like I said, we have some flexibility in terms of term, and we’ll start pecking away at that. But it’s hard to do three or four (players) at once, because you get confused as to what the mission is. Jack was committed for seven or eight years, and never wavered from that. It was, `OK, let’s get this done, put it in the bank and go do the other one [Doughty].’ So we’ve got one long-term deal in, and if we have to do the other one short-term, we’ve still got the free-agent rights and we can try again later. But it’s nice to have one in the bank.”

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Alexander Semin had a collision with Steve Bernier in the 2nd period last night, he did not return for the 3rd, and is listed as day-to-day.
  • Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Avs defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk was spotted limping after the game and went for X-rays, results should be known sometime today.
  • Katie Strang via twitter: Rick DiPietro missed practiced yesterday and his heading back to New York to have his groin strain evaluated.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom will be shut down for a few days with left hip injury. He had surgery on the hip back in 2008-09. Marek Zidlicky will try to rehab his shoulder rather than having surgery. He hopes to be back in 4 to 6 weeks. GM Fletcher isn’t in the market for a replacement right handed Dman.
  • The Globe and Mail: Chris Osgood will have his groin injury checked out by a specialist sometime this week, and it might require surgery. The Red Wings will call up Joey MacDonald.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Pascal Leclaire will not face shots for at least another week with a lower-body injury. Clouston said “It has to do with lower body and back and hips and groin area … it’s not just a pulled groin. I’m not a doctor but … it’s more complicated than that.” When asked if Leclaire could be lost of the season, “I’m not going to say that, I don’t think it’s to that extent,” … “I’m also going to not say it’s not.”
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Tom Kostopoulus waived his right for an in-person meeting with the NHL regarding his hit on Brad Stuart, which might mean at least a 5 game suspension.
  • Rich Chere via twitter: The Devils won’t announce a new captain yet, they’ll go with 2 assistants for now.

Markov could be out a year after surgery … Flyers will need to make a roster move … Sens could trade Lee if… Funny goal celebration video

  • Tony Marinaro via twitter: A string of tweets regarding Montreal Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov’s injury:

“Andrei Markov Breaking News Again: Next week, Andrei Markov will undergo surgery to his right knee.”

“As I reported NOV 16: partial tear ACL graft rt knee, large radial tear lateral meniscus, bone contusions & mod. knee joint effusion.”

“The surgery will be performed in Birmingham, Alabama by Dr James Andrews, arguably the most renowned orthopedic surgeon in the world.”

“Dr James Andrews, has treated thousands of athletes. Andrei Markov, could be out as long as 1 year but is expected to make a full recovery.”

  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Markov’s agent, Don Meehan, say’s they’ll meet with the Canadiens doctor tomorrow to go over options, with surgery a possibility.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers are currently $700,000 under the salary cap, but with Michael Leighton and his $1.55 million cap number returning to the team in less than a week, they’ll have to make a move. Brian Boucher ($925,000) or Leighton (unlikely) could be sent to the AHL, Ian Laperriere ($1.67 million) or Matt Walker ($1.7 million) could be put on LTIR.
  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Several teams would be interested in trading for Ottawa Senators defenseman Brian Lee (cleared waivers) but they’d want the Sens to take back similar money, $875,000.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs forward Mike Brown has a badly broken finger after blocking a shot on Tuesday, and could be out 4 to 6 weeks if he requires surgery. John Mitchell will likely take Brown’s spot on the 4th line. Colby Armstrong practiced but could still be a few days away. JS Giguere will likely be back on Saturday.
  • Jeff Klein of the NY Times: Sean Avery will join the New York Rangers top line tonight with Marian Gaborik and Erik Christensen. Tortorella wants to take advantage of Avery’s speed and forechecking skills.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Bruins are under the salary cap and won’t have to move anyone for the moment. Dater thinks they won’t move Blake Wheeler when they have to clear some cap space.

Isles could face a bigger problem … Moves in Oils future? Anderson, Foote leaves game … Leafs injury update

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Things are not well on the Island and they potentially could get worse, LeBrun … “My biggest concern if I were an Islanders fan is what John Tavares and his powerful agent Pat Brisson (Crosby, Toews, Kane) will think once the star forward’s entry-level contract is up in July 2012. Your top priority right now must be to make sure you don’t lose his enthusiasm for wanting to stay in Long Island.” LeBrun thinks that the San Jose Sharks will go after a top 4 defenseman between now and the trade deadline.
  • Darren Dreger of TSN: “Oilers’ GM Steve Tambellini insists the rebuild plan will not be altered and he isn’t in the market for a blockbuster trade.” Teams continue to ask about Ales Hemsky. Tambellini is looking to add some grit, a centerman, and a defenseman. They don’t want to deal top prospects for picks.
  • ESPN: Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson left last night’s game after the 1st period with a groin injury. Adam Foote was also helped off the ice with a leg injury in the 1st period.
  • Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Some internet talk that the Bruins could send down Brad Marchand and/or Jordan Caron when Marc Savard is ready to return, but Murphy thinks Daniel Paille could be the roster casualty.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Luca Caputi was returned to the Toronto Marlies. JS Giguere, Colby Armstrong, and Dion Phaneuf skated yesterday before Leafs practice. Ron Wilson said that Armstrong could be back next weekend, still would need to get clearance from doctors. Giguere could be back next week sometimes. Phaneuf is schedule to return mid-December.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Guillaume Latendress had 2 surgeries yesterday, one repairing a torn labrum in his hip, the other having a ‘bilateral sports hernia’ repaired. GM Fletcher thinks he’ll be back before the end of the season.

Injury notes on Leighton, Giroux, Sutton, Savard, Spezza, and Armstong

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Philadelphia Flyers goalie Michael Leighton will be out 6-8 weeks as he’ll require back surgery. Claude Giroux had x-rays after Thursday’s game, but was back on the ice Friday at practice.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Andy Sutton fractured his right thumb last night, he’ll be re-evaluated today. Sutton injured his thumb throwing punches at ex-Duck Ruslan Salei during a scrum. He had a cast on after the game. Luca Sbisa will take his place.
  • Joe Haggerty via twitter: Haggerty hasn’t been told anything concrete on when Marc Savard could return, but he wouldn’t be surprised if Savard has held out until Christmas.
  • Rob Longley via twitter: Jason Spezza says he’ll miss “one or two games” with a groin injury. Game 2 would be against the Leafs tonight.

Sunday morning rumors

  • Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic: Matt Hulsizer put $25 million in escrow on Friday to show that he has the capital to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes. There is plenty of negotiations that have to take place with the NHL and the city. A Canadian media outlet said the team as only sold 4,000 season tickets. Gary Bettman had this to say when he was in Ottawa announcing they’ll get the 2012 All-Star game (before Hulsizer put the money in escrow),

“We’ve been at this now for a year and a half.”

“At some point, it may be in Phoenix that we won’t be successful . . . ”

“We hope it should get done (in Phoenix). I believe Phoenix can support an NHL team, but there are a lot of moving pieces we’re dealing with.”

  • Burce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: It took only 15 in to the 2nd session on day 1 for the Senators to potentially have their fir
  • st injury of the season. Filip Kuba hit a rut in the ice, and suffered an injury. He went for x-rays yesterdays, and if it’s broken, he could be out 6-8 weeks.
  • Eric Stephens via twitter: Bobby Ryan will be at center until he fails according to Randy Carlyle, “We think it’s a position that suits him and makes him more effective.”
  • Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Only once have the Columbus Blue Jackets drawn less than 10,000 for a game, but that number is going to increase a lot this year. The team has only sold 7,700 season tickets for this season. “Worried is not the right word,” Priest said. “I know what kind of crowds we are going to see early in the season. … We will have some weekday crowds of 8,500, potentially.” Ken Hitchcock will be a special adviser for the team.
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Timing of Marc Savard’s injury news is ‘peculiar’, but it might open the door for some younger players.

Colby Armstrong signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Colby Armstrong to a 3 year, $9 million deal.

Armstrong is a ‘Burke type’ player, he brings the sandpaper/grit. In 360 career games, he’s scored 78 goals and added 100 assists for 178 points, with 317 penalty minutes.

Rumors from Leafland

  • Domien Cox via Twitter: Cox thinks the Maple Leafs could look at Paul Martin, ahead of Dan Hamhuis, if the bidding isn’t crazy.
  • Mark Seidel via Twitter: Raffi Torres has been telling people that he’ll be signing the Maple Leafs on July 1st.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Talks between Nikolai Kulemin and the Maple Leafs are progressing but ‘a deal is not imminent’. Those talks have been put on hold as Nonis and Burke prepare for today. Kulemin still thinks he should be paid like a first line winger, in the $3 million range. John Mitchell, Wayne Primeau and Jamie Lundmark will hit the free agent market. The Leafs may revisit them later on if they are not signed, and other Leaf options don’t work out.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Likely targets for Brian Burke and the Maple Leafs: Colby Armstrong, Raffi Torres, and Dan Hamhuis. ‘Next in Line’ for Leafs: Manny Malhotra, Paul Martin, Aaron Asham. ‘Longshot’ Ilya Kovalchuk.
  • Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: It could be a slow free agent day for the Leafs. It’s speculated that Burke has no interest in Kovalchuk, too much money for too long of term. With a weak free agent class, Burke and Nonis seem more focused on trades. Possible free agent targets could be Matthew Lombardi, Colby Armstrong, Dan Hamhuis and Paul Martin.

Maple Leafs have other targets … Flames also interested in Savard? Cheechoo being bought out

  • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The Calgary Flames may also be interested in trading for Marc Savard. The Maple Leafs are rumored to be looking at free agents Dan Hamhuis and Zbynek Michalek, possibly exploring a trade for Jeff Carter before they move on to Marc Savard. Michalek may be more interested in heading to Ottawa to play with his brother. The Flames will buy out Alex Kotalik, and will cost them $1 million against the cap the for the next 4 years. If the Leafs were to deal for Savard, it probably wouldn’t happen until next week. The Leafs did not qualify John Mitchell.
  • TSN: Brian Burke was on the Fan 590 radio station yesterday. Fan 590 Audio. The Leafs have some trade options but none involve Marc Savard. They have 4 offers for Kaberle but one is “a joke”. They are not going to trade him for the best offer, but one that gives them what they need, a top 6 forward.
  • Damien Cox via Twitter: “So funny there are actual news stories saying the Leafs aren’t talking to Boston about Marc Savard. Seriously folks? Cmon.”
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators have place Jonathan Cheechoo on waivers, with the purpose of buying him out. Cheechoo would then be a salary cap hit of $1.165 million over the next 2 seasons. The Sens are still negotiating with Andy Sutton and Matt Cullen. They would also like to add a forward and a Dman. Shean Donovan may end up going to Europe.
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins GM Ray Shero and Dan Hamhuis spoke directly but numbers weren’t discussed. Shero discussed why he’d be a good fit, what they have, and why they’d like to have him. He told Hamhuis that “if over the next day or so he wants to move forward with that – well, let’s talk.” Shero has the option of signing him to a long term deal. Gonchar is looking for a 3 year deal at no leass than $5 million.
  • William DePaoli (InsidePittsburghSports.com) via Twitter: Colby Armstrong agent, Don Meehan, expects a stong market for his client, and is seeking a 4 year deal from a ‘hockey market’.
  • Gare Joyce of ESPN (Insider registration): Joyce runs through this years draft class and when they may be in the NHL.
This year: Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin, Erik Gudbranson, Nino Niederreither, Mikael Granlund.
Second rounders that could make it this year: John McFarland, Alexander Petrovic, Jared Knight and Ryan Spooner.
Maybe this year: Brett Connolly, Jeff Skinner
Next year: Ryan Johansen, Alexander Burmistrov, Cam Fowler, Evgeni Kuznetsov, Dylan McIlrath
2012-13: Brandon Gormley, Jaden Schwartz, Vladimir Tarsenk, Joey Hishon, Beau Bennett, Quinton Howden, Austin Watson,
2013 and beyond: Jack Campbell, Derek Forbort, Nick Bjugstad, Riley Sheahan, Jarred Tinordi, Mark Pysyk, Kevin Hayes, Mark Visentin, Charlie Coyle, Emerson Etem, and Brock Nelson.

Spezza for #2 “Outlandish” … Kovalchuk situation … Center options for Gaborik … Price for Penner?

  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Fluto calling Spezza to Bruins for the 2nd overall pick, “outlandish”.  He gives 5 reasons as to why it won’t happen. Do you think? Not a chance the Bruins would do that. That’s a Maple Leaf style rumor suggested by some crazed fan who calls in to a Fan 590 radio show (and starts off the call with “long time listener, first time caller”) or posted by some anonymous blogger.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Ilya Kovalchuk and the New Jersey Devils are still talking, but appears he’ll test the market (which doesn’t mean he won’t return to the Devils). Kovalchuk’s agent wouldn`t comment on the reports out of Russia about the supposed KHL offers. LeBrun (and many others) think the LA Kings is the prime landing spot for Kovalchuk, as they have the cap room and are a team that is seriously close to contending. Brian Burke told ESPN that they are not going to be involved in Kovalchuk talks. 10 or more teams have contacted the Toronto Maple Leafs about trading for Tomas Kaberle, but nothing serious at this point, which will probably change by the draft.
  • Timo Seppa and E.J. Hradek of ESPN: The Rangers could use someone to play with Marian Gaborik, and it doesn’t look like anyone on their current rosters is able to fit the bill. One option could be trading for Tim Connelly, though Hradek doesn’t agree with that suggestion. If they could fit it into their cap situation, Patrick Marleau would be worth a look. Tomas Plekanec and Matthew Lombardi may be the best options for the Rangers.
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins GM Ray Shero said talks with his free agents will increase this week. He has 8 UFA’s, with Sergei Gonchar and Matt Cooke drawing the most interest. He’s had preliminary talks with both, and both have shown an interest to return.
  • Tom Awad and E.J. Hradek of ESPN: Everyone and their mother knows that the Montreal Canadiens are a small team and need to get bigger. One off-season option would be for them to trade Carey Price for Oilers winger Dustin Penner (I’m not sure if straight up would work). The Oilers still have the Bulin wall but might be able to include him in a larger deal (I don’t see that happening as he’s a $4 million cap hit for 3 more years). 2 other options could be free agents Alexei Ponikarovsky or Freddy Modin.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: After reviewing a contract offer from the Atlanta Thrashers, Maxim Aginogenov and his agent agree that they are not close on the terms of the deal. The Thrashers and Colby Armstrong are also not close on a deal. There were also reports that Atlanta had signed Swedish winger Fredrick Pettersson, but those are false for the moment at least.
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Vancouver Canucks winger Alex Burrows underwent shoulder surgery last week to repair a torn labrum, and may have to start next season without him. The shoulder started bugging him half way through the season, and affected his play down the stretch and in the playoffs.
  • Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Nothing is set in stone yet, but it appears that Doug Weight will be returning to the New York Islanders next season.

Malkin not going anywhere? Taylor Hall at center? Kubina and Afinogenov could be back with the Thrashers

  • Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette: Cook doesn’t think the Penguins will bring back UFAs: Sergei Gonchar, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Bill Guerin, Jordan Leopold, Ruslan Fedotenko, and Jay McKee. Matt Cooke (depending on how much money he wants) and Mark Eaton are the best possibilities to be brought back by the Pens.
  • Ken Weibe of QMI Agency in the Toronto Sun: Windsor Spitfires coach thinks Taylor Hall should be the #1 pick (not a surprise since he coaches him). Part of the belief that the Oilers could select Tyler Seguin with the #1 pick is that they need a ‘center of the future’. Coach Bob Boughner says Hall is naturally a center … “Taylor is a centre naturally, he’s playing left wing on our team but he’ll take some draws once in a while and he’s good on draws,” said Boughner. “I don’t doubt that if he goes to the next level and they need a centre, he could play centre as well. He’s pretty strong on the puck. “The reason I put him on the wing is to conserve his energy and expose other teams wide because he has that speed.”
  • Kevin Allen of the USA Today: The Atlanta Thrashers have talked with 2 of their UFAs, Pavel Kubina and Maxim Afinogenov, and come away thinking they have a good chance at re-signing them. Allen thinks Kubina will want a deal in the 4 year, $16 million range, which might be problem for the Thrashers. It doesn’t look like Colby Armstrong will be back with the Thrashers next season.
  • Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Canucks RFA Mason Raymond could be on the trade block this summer. The going rate for a 25 goal scorer is around $2.5-3 million, but how do you offer him over $2 million when Alex Burrows makes that much and scored 38 goals. Raymond’s game is also similar to another RFA, Michael Grabner. The Canucks could trade him for a top-4 defenseman, or for some more size up front (if they are giving him up for more size, that player has to have some skill as well).
  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: There are currently 4 teams without a head coach: Atlanta, Columbus, New Jersey, and Tampa. Custance goes through top coaching candidates out there. “The AHL Contingent” – Guy Boucher (Hamilton), Scott Arniel (Manitoba), and Kevin Dineen (Portland). “Top NHL Assistants” – Craig Ramsey (Boston), Paul MacLean (Detroit), Brent Peterson (Nashville). “Stanley Cup Winners” – Bob Hartley and Ken Hitchcock. “Recent NHL Experience” – Craig MacTavish, John Stevens, and Rick Tocchet.

Jarome Open to a Trade? Michalek Done for Playoffs … Potential Flame Targets

  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: The below statement doesn’t need much commentary to go along with it … From Jarome Iginla …

“If they don’t want me here and want to move in a different direction, I would look at it,” he said after completing all the medicals and end-of-season interviews with the team brass. “You want to play where you are wanted and have people believe in you.

“If they do that, we would look at it. It wouldn’t be personal. My family has been treated very well. I want to be part of the solution here and I believe I can be. If that is what it came to, I wouldn’t take it personally. The organization has treated me well.”

  • Allen Panzeri of hte Ottawa Citizen: Already without Filip Kuba and Alex Kovalev, the Ottawa Senators will now be without winger Milan Michalek for the remainder of the playoffs. During Game 1 versus the Penguins, Michalek tore his ACL in his left knee. Michalek missed 9 games at the end of the regular season with a partially torn ACL. Surgery will be in about 2 weeks and he should be ready for training camp.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: The Florida Panthers currently sit in the #3 slot at the 2010 NHL draft. The Panthers could make a pitch to Boston to move up one spot in the draft, or move down collecting more picks.
  • The Calgary Sun: Some free agents that the Calgary Flames may target; Eric Nystrom (Cal.), Alex Auld (NYR), Tomas Holmstrom (Det), Adam Burish (Chi), Scott Nichol (SJ), Colby Armstrong (Atl), and Matt Cooke (Pitt).
  • QMI Agency, The Toronto Sun: There is a rumor coming out Quebec that the New York Islanders were being bought by media giant, Quebecor. Quebecor CEO quickly denied that there have been any talks with with the Islanders, but did say they do have an interest in bringing a team back to Quebec City.
  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: A group of agents is pushing for former Toronto Maple Leafs assistant GM, Jeff Jackson, to become on of the top guys in the NHLPA.
  • Jim Kelly of Sportsnet.ca: Rumors are floating around that Brendan Shanahan could be taking for the Executive VP of NHL Operations, a position currently held by disciplinarian, Colin Campbell. Though Kelly doesn’t put much stock in it because:

    1) Shanahan is woefully inexperienced in the inner workings of the oft-times Byzantine world of the NHL and 2) what person in his right mind wants to be exposed to scathing criticism from both inside and outside the league for rulings that on many occasions King Solomon himself couldn’t cleanly decide.

Coaches Safe in Atlanta for Now … Getzlaf and Selanne Day-to-Day … Hudler Back with Wings Next Year?

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The Anaheim Ducks were hit with a couple injuries on Sunday, with the MRI’s done yesterday. Ryan Getzlaf has an inflamed left ankle (the same ankle that was hurt before the Olympics), but the MRI showed no additional damage. Teemu Selanne has a slightly sprained shoulder, and will be re-evaluated today. Both are listed as day-to-day.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Vivlamore interviews Thrashers GM, Don Waddell. When asked if there will a be a coaching change (John Anderson) before the end of the season, Waddell said no. The coaching situation will be re-evaluated after the season though. Waddell talked to Pavel Kubina and Colby Armstrong during Olympic break, both are upcoming UFA’s, and he plans to talk to them again in a month or so.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Ken Holland will once again try to convince Jiri Hudler to leave the KHL and come back to the Red Wings. Hudler has a 2 year, $5.75 million arbitration deal from last summer that he is bound too. His KHL deal was for 2 years, and between $3-5 million a season, tax free. With his KHL season done after a 1st round playoff exit, he’s not eligible to play for the Wings this year, but could suit up for them next season.
  • Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune: The Minnesota Wild are expected to sign UMass center, Casey Wellman this morning. The college free agent picked the Wild over 21 other teams. Wellman was 6th in goals this past season, scoring 23 times. He’ll be signing a 2 year deal worth $1.8 million. He’ll be in the lineup this year (ineligible for the playoffs).
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators could be welcoming back Nick Foligno and Chris Campoli to their lineup as soon as tonight against the Maple Leafs. If Foligno is able to go, Jesse Winchester will most likely be out. If Campoli plays, Brian Lee will most likely be the odd man out.

    The Day after Deadline Day

  • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli had a frustrating day yesterday. Though he did bring in Dennis Seidenberg, and cleared out a little room to bring in a scoring forward, that forward never showed up. The Bruins had 7 forwards on their wish list; Alex Ponikarovsky, Raffi Torres, Ray Whitney, Keith Tkachuk, Wojtek Wolski, Cory Stillman, and Teemu Selanne. Though he was in on few deals, he didn’t want to match the asking price.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Tomas Kaberle was never asked to waive his no trade clause, but his agent did give Brian Burke a list of 3 teams that Kaberle would consider going to. Burke was obviously, unable to pull something off. The 3 teams weren’t mentioned, but my guess would be that they were Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington. “The key for me is we respected the no-trade clause. It was a small number of teams and I generally will not accept less than 10. A player can’t handcuff you that way. This was a rare case where Tomas, a special player, asked us to look into three cases and we did.” Burke also mentioned yesterday that they may look at signing Kaberle to an extension, but my guess is that he’ll be moved at the Draft.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquier: Despite all the phone calls the last couple days, the Flyers didn’t pull off any moves. Not having a 1st and 2nd round pick hampered what they could do. They showed interest in Colby Armstrong, Raffi Torres and Dan Hamhuis. The Flyers looked at other goalies but felt they weren’t an upgrade over Michael Leighton.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: “We looked around for a few things to see if anything made sense to really add without subtracting and nothing really came up that made sense,” Holmgren said. “We’re certainly not upset and we’re moving forward.” The Flyers looked at Dan Hamhuis, Raffi Torres, and Tomas Kaberle. The Predators may have asked for Ryan Parent and Braydon Coburn (Parent and another player as they didn’t have any high picks this year). The Flyers hoped to get Kaberle cheap. The lack of draft picks probably hurt their chances of acquiring someone.
  • Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: They breakdown a bunch of yesterday’s trades.
  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Alexei Ponikarovsky won’t make his Penguins debut until the weekend, and may find himself alongside Evgeni Malkin.
  • Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun: Sheldon Souray developed an infection in his surgically repaired hand, and may be done for the season.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers decided to stay put yesterday. They found the prices for Dan Hamhuis and Raffi Torres too expensive. They were thought to be interested in Pavol Demitra but nothing really developed.
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Penguins: Penguins GM Ray Shero weighs in on trade deadline.
  • James Gordon of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators coach Cory Clouston said Filip Kuba is doubtful for tonights game with an injury that isn’t ‘serious’.

Trade talk is picking up as Olympic Freeze is Over

  • 11:05 AM: John Glennon of the Tennessean: The Predators coud use some scoring depth, and/or someone that can kill penalties. They’ll most likely look to add a rental player, instead of one with a longer contract. Dan Hamhuis and/or Dan Ellis could be moved out. If they move Hamhuis, they’d definitely need to bring in another Dman or 2. Potential targets could be Maxim Afinogenov, Colby Armstrong, Jeff Halpren, Ethan Moreau, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Rob Niedermayer, Lee Stempniak, Raffi Torres, and Ray Whitney.
  • 10:57 AM: Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Contract talks between the Penguins and Sergei Gonchar will be put on hold until after the season.
  • 10:53 AM: Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings probably won’t make a significant move, but will may look to add some depth at forward.
  • 10:47 AM: Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: The Lightning could be after a scoring winner, a puck-moving defenseman and a gritty 3rd-4th liner. Cheaper options could be Shean Donavan or Marek Svatos. Freddie Modin, Ponikarovsky or Torres are other options. Kris Versteeg would be a dream addition.
  • 10:39 AM: Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: The Coyotes are looking for another scorer, especially one that could help their 29th ranked power play.
  • 10:33 AM: Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune: If Marek Zidlicky isn’t signed to an extension by the trade deadline, it would be surprising if he wasn’t moved.
  • 9:30 AM

  • Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Bruins GM, Petter Chiarelli has got a couple deals going, but nothing is fore sure yet. He’s looking to get a top 9 forward that has an offensive side, and will most likely be a rental player. Ray Whitney’s price might be too high, with other possibilities, Selanne, Ponikarovsky, or Kozlov. On the Dman side of things, Dan Hamhuis and James Wisniewski could be options.
  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: 10 teams have contacted the Hurricanes over the last 4 days. Ray Whitney is getting the most interest, but other names are being brought up. “I am getting inquiries on more players than I expected,” Rutherford said. “That doesn’t mean more players will be traded, but it’s more inquiries than I anticipated.” Rutherford also said he won’t trade Ray Whitney unless he gets a 1st round pick in the deal, or a player equivalent to a 1st rounder.
  • James Murphy of NESN: The Coyotes and Bruins could come together on a deal. The Bruins could end up with Peter Mueller, and the Coyotes are looking to add a veteran forward and defenseman. The Bruins might have a couple deals in place, and that they could be announced today. Whitney, Torres and Ponikarovsky are also on the Bruins radar. The Penguins are supposedly the frontrunners for Ponikarovsky.
  • Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: The Philadelphia Flyers are one of the teams showing strong interested in Raffi Torres. The Blue Jackets are looking for a 2nd round pick, but the Flyers are without a 1st and 2nd round pick this year.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Alex Ponikarovsky is getting ready for the trade deadline day, but doesn’t really want to talk about it until it happens. So far Burke hasn’t been happy with the trade offers he’s getting for his UFAs, and might hold on to them right until the end.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars and Steve Ott are still trying to hammer out a contract extension before the trade deadline. Both sides realize that if an agreement isn’t reached, he’ll most likely be traded.
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Trade talk has picked up the last couple days. Penguins GM, Ray Shero will look for a scoring winger, a physical defenseman, but not an enforcer to fill in for the injured  Eric Godard.
  • Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers and Team Slovakia defenseman, Lubomir Visnovsky, has been reprimanded by the IOC for violating anti-doping rules. Visnovsky took Advil Cold & Sinus during the qualification round, that urine sample came back positive. Before and after the semifinal round, he tested negative. He consulted Oilers trainer, Slovakian team doctor, and admitted taking it on his doping control form.

Rumors from the Pacific … Hawks-Panthers Talking? Interest in Kozlov

  • E.J. Hradek and Puck Prospectus of ESPN:
    • Doug Wilson and the Sharks would like to add some secondary scoring and a puck moving Dman. It would have to be a rental player, as Patrick Marleau and Evgeni Nabokov need to be re-signed. The Sharks may also look at adding a backup goalie with some experience.
    • The LA Kings are looking to add a scoring winger and will look at Ray Whitney, Freddie Modin, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Paul Kariya, and Raffi Torres. They may also look at a goaltender with experience.
    • The Phoenix Coyotes might be one team that is looking to add players that won’t be UFAs after the season. Peter Mueller has been rumored all season to be on the outs. Andrew Brunette of the Wild might be a good fit with the Yotes.
    • The Anaheim Ducks have UFA’s Scott Niedermayer, Teemu Selanne, and Saku Koivu that will draw some interest. Bob Murray has said that Niedermayer isn’t going anywhere. James Wisniewski’s name has been mentioned with the Blackhawks (for Cam Barker before he was dealt).
    • Dallas Stars need an upgrade on the blueline. They won’t be bringing in any big contracts. Marty Turco is the most likely player to be moved. Mike Ribeiro, Stephane Robidas, Fabian Brunnstrom and Steve Ott, could find themselves playing in a different city after the deadline.
  • Harry Teinowitz on ESPN Radio: I don’t know how reliable this guy is, but he mentioned on Monday of a trade rumor between the Chicago Blackhawks and Florida Panthers. The Hawks would send Cristobal Huet, Corey Crawford, and Kris Versteeg to the Panthers for Tomas Vokoun and an defenseman (maybe either Dennis Seidenberg or Jordan Leopold).
  • TheFourthPeriod: The Kings, Bruins, and Red Wings are rumored to have an interest in Slava Kozlov. UFA’s for the Atlanta Thrashers that could be moved are: Kozlov, Colby Armstrong, Jim Slater, Maxim Afinogenov, Eric Boulton, Pavel Kubina, Christoph Schubert, Mark Popovic and Johan Hedberg. Kozlov, Kubina, and Armstrong should draw the most interest.
  • Jeremy Roenick on ESPNChicago: Roenick is putting his hand in the rumor mill, saying that Jaroslav Halak wants out of Montreal, and he’d be better suited to lead Chicago to the Cup than Antti Niemi and/or Cristobal Huet. Vokoun would be a perfect fit in Chicago.

Cullen Gone by Tomorrow .. Turco in Limbo .. Armstrong Drawing Interest .. Some Panthers on the Block

  • The Triangle Business Journal: Hurricanes GM, Jim Rutherford, expects to trade Matt Cullen before the Olympic roster freeze (tomorrow), and Ray Whitney after the break.
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Tim Thomas hasn’t been approached about waiving his no-trade, and “Thomas told CSNNE.com he “won’t respond to something that’s completely fictitious” and thus won’t address trade rumors that have kicked up with the Vezina Trophy winner.”
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Marty Turco hasn’t heard anything about what the Stars plan on doing with him. “I don’t have any qualms or problems. You put yourself in Joe’s shoes, and that’s it. Then you just focus on your job, and that’s all you can do,” Turco said. “A lot of people know how I feel and where my heart is, and if I keep playing like I’m playing now, then I’ll be OK and look back at everything and have a great big smile on my face.”
  • Patrick Caisse of Canoe: The LA Kings and Montreal Canadiens are rumored to be working on a deal that involves Alexander Frolov. Though the Kings might be looking to acquire Ray Whitney or Slava Kozlov before they deal Frolov.
  • James Murphy via Twitter: Sources have told Murphy that Dan Hamhuis of the Predators is on the block, the Preds want scoring in return.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers forward Rostislav Olesz has a broken hand, so it might quite trade rumors for him. Richards doens’t think he’d be traded anyways, but others could be available; Jordan Leopold, Dennis Seidenberg, Gregory Campbell and Kamil Kreps.
  • Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Colby Armstrong is drawing plenty of interest, and the highest return for the Thrashers may be just before the deadline.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche defenseman Ruslan Salei  is about to return after being out for 3 months, and could be a good depth acquisition for someone.
  • Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press: Walters wonders with the emergence of Wild goalie Anton Khudobin, if they’d consider moving Josh Harding.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Mike Komisarek underwent surgery on the torn labrum in his right shoulder. He’ll be out 4-6 months.

Around the Boards: Lecavalier to Rangers? Flames interested in Armstrong, Tanguay?

  • Hockey Night in Canada ‘Hotstove’ video
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
    • Vincent Lecavalier to the New York Rangers trade rumors are back. Rumored package; D Matt Gilroy, D Wade Redden and either C Brandon Dubinsky or RW Ryan Callahan. I bet Lightning fans would be excited about the unacheiving, over-paid Redden.
    • The Calgary Flames could be interested in winger Colby Armstrong if he becomes available.
    • Sergei Gonchar could become trade bait if he isn’t re-signed.
    • Whispers that Chicago is still considering a move for a goalie. Available goalies are Halak, Biron, Giguere, and maybe Roloson. Trade names out of Chicago to get under next years cap are Versteeg, Sharp, Barker and Huet.
    • The Capitals are the front runners for Kovalchuk.
    • The Senators, Rangers, Lightning, and Stars are interested in Sykora.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
    • LeBrun believes the Rangers could have an interest in Sheldon Souray, but would need to get rid of the contracts of either Michal Rozsival or Wade Redden. I don’t see it as an easy feet to get rid of either one of those contracts, plus Souray has a no-trade clause and his family is out in LA, so he might not even want to go there.
    • The Penguins are close to re-signing Kris Letang or Sergei Gonchar.
    • The Predators will only be re-signing one of their goalies for next year. My bet would be on Rinne.
    • Senators GM, Bryan Murray, is hoping to hold contract talks this week with Dman Anton Volcheckov.
    • Marty Turco could be on the move at the trade deadline. The Dallas Stars have talked to Montreal about Jaroslav Halak as their goalie of the future
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Tomas Kaberle is handcuffing the Leafs in a way, they can’t seem to get better with him, and can’t seem to trade him. Regardless if Brian Burke says he isn’t asking Tomas Kaberle to waive his no-trade clause, and Kaberle saying he doesn’t want to go anywhere, the talk of Kaberle being traded won’t end.
  • Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald: Cruickshank brings up the possibility of the Flames bringing back Alex Tanguay, though it most likely won’t happen.

Around the Boards: Souray will waive ‘no-trade’ clause, Kovalchuk-Thrashers continue talks, Savard out 2-3 weeks

    • Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal: Sheldon Souray has let it be known that he’d be willing to waive his ‘no-trade’ clause if it ‘makes sense’ for his family. His family is out in California, so if he gets traded, expect it to be to a west coast/conference team. Souray has 3 years left on his contract at $5.4 million cap hit. He’s making $5.5 mill this year, and $4.5 mill the next 2 seasons.
    • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Thrashers aren’t giving up on re-signing Ilya Kovalchuk.

On the ongoing contract talks with Ilya Kovalchuk, Waddell said: “Talks continue on. We met in Saskatoon (at the World Junior Championships). Our priority still remains to get him signed. We’ve made some progress but we are obviously not ready yet to put a signature on a contract.

“The positive thing is the talks have continued. They haven’t broken down. We talk almost daily. To me, that’s all part of the process. If talks break down because one side puts their shoes too far in the sand then you know you’re probably at an impasse. At this point, that hasn’t happened. Both sides continue to talk and try to find away to make this deal work.”

    • Chris Zupke of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne expects to return to the Ducks lineup tonight. Changes could be coming for the Ducks if they continue to sit near the bottom of the Western Conference. JS Giguere, Scott Niedermayer, Saku Koivu, and Todd Marchant, could find themselves with another team before seasons end.
    • Paul Hunt of the Toronto Star: Hunt lists some names who are unrestricted free agents this year that could be dealt at the trade deadline: Slava Kozlov, Colby Armstrong and Pavel Kubina (Atlanta), Saku Koivu (Anaheim), Paul Kariya (St. Louis), Ray Whitney, Matt Cullen (Carolina), Jeff Halpern, Antero Niittymaki and Alex Tanguay (Tampa), Martin Biron and Doug Weight (Islanders), Raffi Torres (Columbus), Steve Ott and Jere Lehtinen (Dallas), Alexei Ponikarovsky, Matt Stajan, Lee Stempniak and Vesa Toskala (Toronto)
    • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs are now allowed to negotiate with RFA Jonas Gustavsson, but have yet to do so. The Leafs don’t feel any pressure or urgency to get something worked out right away.
    • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Boston’s Marc Savard could be out for 2 to 3 weeks with a sprained knee. The Bruins were stayed healthy last season, the same can’t be said for this year.

    Quick SnapShots – July 17th 2009

    • Former goon Chris Nilan had his shoplifting charge dismissed. It’s hard not to laugh at this. ‘Knuckles’ was apparently trying to steal a bathing suit, he walked out of the store with them under his pants, Nilan denied he was stealing. One to many punches to head I guess. Updated with more comedy: Nilan told the cops; “I just wanted to save a few bucks,”, and that he took a swing at one of the security guards.
    • Colby Armstrong re-upped with the Thrashers for 1 year, at a reported $2.4 million. Armstrong scored 22 goals and added 18 assists in his first full season in Atlanta. He was one of the key pieces that Atanta acquired from Pittsburgh in the Marion Hossa trade (Hossa and Pascal Dupuis for Armstrong, Eric Christenson, Angelo Esposito and a 1st Round Pick.
    • A new potential bidder for the Phoenix Coyotes has stepped forward. Canadian Daryl Jones is meeting with the NHL today.
