State of the Colorado Avalanche: NHL Trade Deadline Edition
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 22nd, 2012
Written by Nathan Coker, who can be found on twitter at @ncavalanche
The trade deadline is less than a week away and already the Colorado Avalanche have pulled off a trade, sending RFA defense-man Kyle Quincey to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for RFA forward Steve Downie (Tampa then flips Quincey to Detroit for a 1st). So, what does this mean for the Avs? Well, according to TSN analyst Pierre LeBrun via Twitter, another NHL GM has told him that “..’Colorado could be quite busy over the next week.’ Trade 1 is down..”. I would say that the Avs will be buyers AND sellers. Look for the Avs to be making more similar moves as the Quincey-Downie trade. They have a lot of players who are not showing up every game – and it’s costing the team in the standings. I would look at those players to be the first to leave for either draft picks or other roster players to help with the scoring.
They have a good, young core of players down the middle (Duchene, O’Reilly, Stastny) who are all play-makers. They desperately need scoring. More importantly, they need scoring WINGERS. And grit. Their top wingers are Landeskog (although a great player, hes still so young and has much to learn), Hejduk (who’s career is clearly dwindling) ,and Mueller (who seems to be injured every other week).
Ruutu re-signs with Canes … Most Avs up for grabs … Kings like Pominville and Stafford … Sabres trying to re-sign Gaustad
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 22nd, 2012
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Tuomo Ruutu and the Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to a 4 year contract extension with a salary cap hit of $4.75 million.
- Adrian Dater via twitter: From some high ranking people “almost everyone on Avs in play except three or four guys.” If the Avalanche were to trade Paul Stastny, they need to take back almost as much salary to stay above the salary floor. Highly unlikely. Capgeek: The Avs can’t take back more than $3.9 million in cap hits without taking salary back.
- Dennis Bernstain via twitter: The Kings are interested in Sabres forwards Jason Pominville and Drew Stafford.
- Nick Cotsonika via twitter: The Sabres are trying to re-sign center Paul Gaustad.
- Calgary Flames via twitter: Flames Chris Butler will be out 3 weeks with a left thigh laceration.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Islanders put Tim Wallace on waivers.
Leafs Dmen getting interest … Avs knew Quincey would be flipped … Stars getting calls on Ott and Ribeiro … Hemsky’s worth … plus more notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 22nd, 2012
- Darren Dreger of TSN: The Maple Leafs blueline continues to get interest. Jake Gardiner is not available. Teams are looking at Luke Schenn, but Burke won’t move him unless they get an offer he can’t refuse. Carl Gunnarsson, Cody Franson and Keith Aulie are getting interest. The Blackhawks, Red Wings, Devils, Oilers and Jets are looking for defenseman. The Oilers are looking for a roster player for Ales Hemsky, which is too steep for many given his struggles.
- John Shannon via twitter: Avalanche GM Greg Sherman knew that Lightning GM Steve Yzerman was going to flip Kyle Quincy to a Western Conference team, but didn’t know where.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Stars have gotten calls on Steve Ott and Mike Ribeiro, and would consider moving them if the price is right. Ribeiro has a limited no trade clause, he selects 10 teams he won’t go to. Ribeiro has one more year left on his deal with a $5 million cap hit. Ott has 2 years left on his deal with a $2.95 million cap hit, but a salary of $3.2 million. GM Joe Nieuwendyk is looking at the big picture and is looking long-term. LeBrun notes that he could make a move or 2 that surprises people.
- Scott Burnside of ESPN: Ales Hemsky is available but comes with “a lack of durability and questionable work ethic.” He hasn’t scored in 16 games, so his asking price is modest now. It may take a small collection of mid-round picks and/or a prospect. Possible teams interested are: Rangers, Predators, Bruins, Kings and Red Wings.
- Helene St. James via twitter: Red Wings GM Ken Holland: Wings “are done on defense.”
- Rob Longley via twitter: Colby Armstrong was a healthy scratch last night again. You have to wonder what the rest of the season holds for him.
- Chris Botta via twitter: Evgeni Nabokov will get his $2-$3 million, but he needs to know if Rick DiPietro is still in the plans to get NHL starts while rehabbing.
- Dave Hilson of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs center Mikhail Grabovski hasn’t heard anything regarding contract talks between his agent and the Leafs. He’d like to stay in Toronto.
- Pat Leonard of the NY Daily News: Rangers forward Wojtek Wolski on is name in trade rumors:
“I know I’m supposed to be getting traded, I hear it all the time,” said Wolski, who becomes a restricted free agent after his two-year, $7.6 million expires at the end of the season. “I know I have a big contract. If they could trade me and free some space and get some value, I’m sure it’s possible. But I have no control over any of that.”
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Scouting the Kings-Coyotes: 2 Lightning, Blue Jackets, Blues, Hurricanes, Stars, Canucks, Avalanche and Rangers.
Steve Downie traded to the Avalanche … Kyle Quincey ends up with Red Wings … Lightning get 1st round pick
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Trades on February 21st, 2012
The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded winger Steve Downie to the Colorado Avalanche for defenseman Kyle Quincey. The Lightning then sent Quincey to the Detroit Red Wings for a 2012 1st round pick and defenseman Sebastien Piche.
The Avalanche currently sit 3 points out of the playoffs in the West, but would have to leapfrog 3 teams. They are tied with the Stars at 62 points. The Kings and Flames have 65 points.
Downie (24) carries a $1.85 million cap hit and will be a RFA at the end of the year. Quincey (26) carries a $3.125 million and will also be a RFA at the year. Piche (24) carries a $563,333 cap hit and will be a RFA
The Red Wings originally drafted Quincey in 2003 in the 4th round.

Blue Jackets getting closer … Vultures circling Avs … Roy can be had … Ward out with LBI … Nabokov – Isles to talk contract
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 20th, 2012
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson: “We’re waiting for the right deals. We’re getting closer. But we’re not there yet.”
- The Globe and Mail: Burke has said he isn’t interested in adding a goalie at this point. They could look for one in the summer. Jhonas Enroth or Anders Lindback or any other goalie not going to Columbus could be available.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: “The vultures are circling around the Avs.” They could begin selling soon.
- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: The Sabres are looking to move Derek Roy. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said he won’t be looking to add another goalie.
“I like our goalies,” Holmgren said, presumably with a straight face. “They believe they are going to play better. They are not happy with their performances either. They both realize they have to play better.”
Colorado could be sellers by the end of the week, and JS Giguere could be available. He carries $1.25 million cap hit, and has 1 year left on his deal.
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Derek Roy’s days in Buffalo could be numbered. He has another year at $4 million, which may make him attractive to some.
“Right now, this is my team,” Roy said. “I’m not a GM. I have no idea what they’re going to do. All I can do is play for my team, play for my linemates, go out every night like it was my first year and play as hard as I can every game.”
- Tim Wharnsby via twitter: Ty Conklin has been put on waivers by the Red Wings.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Justin Peters will start in net for the Hurricanes tonight as Cam Ward is out with a lower-body injury. “I’m not going to take any chances (with Ward),” Muller said. “We’ve got a lot of games in March. … We need to assess (the injury) and stay on it and make sure it doesn’t get worse. Before he goes back in the net he needs to be 100 percent and ready to go.”
- Arthur Staple of Newsday: Evgeni Nabokov’s agent, Don Meehan, said that negotiations with the Islanders will “start soon.” Isles GM Garth Snow would not comment.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Lightning center Vinny Lecavalier left practice with a lingering upper-body injury. It’s not believed to be serious.
- Gene Principe via twitter: Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin will be out 7-10 days with a groin injury. Yann Danis has been recalled. Dan Tencer via twitter: Potential trade partners for Khabibulin don’t like the extra year on his deal.
- Jeff Veillette via twitter: The Blue Jackets and Senators are scouting the Leafs AHL team today.
- Stephen Whyno via twitter: Capitals lines: Ovechkin-Perreault-Brouwer, Chimera-Johansson-Semin, Hendricks-Laich-Knuble, Beagle-Halpern-Ward.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Craig Anderson will start in net for the Senators. Zenon Konopka and Matt Carkner are scratches.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Mathieu Garon will start in net for the Lightning tomorrow against the Ducks.
- Rob Longley via twitter: Jonas Gustavsson will start in net for the Maple Leafs tomorrow. Joffrey Lupul and Carl Gunnarsson will be in.
Sunday morning rumors and notes involving deadline buyers and sellers, Maple Leafs, Blackhawks, Blue Jackets, Flyers, Kings, Blackhawks and Oilers
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 19th, 2012
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
“The prices, in some cases, are embarrassing,” said a league executive. “They’re going to get more realistic closer to the deadline, but right now teams are asking for too much for their players.”
Garrioch lists the Sellers and who is available: Carolina – Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek. Columbus – Jeff Carter, Antoine Vermette, Derick Brassard, Rick Nash and Steve Mason. NY Islanders – Mark Eaton, Steve Staios, Milan Jurcina, P.A. Parenteau. Tampa Bay – Ryan Malone. Edmonton – Ales Hemsky, Nikolai Khabibulin and Theo Peckham. Montreal – Travis Moen, Andrei Kostitsyn and Mathieu Darche.
The Buyers and who they like: San Jose – Rick Nash, Teemu Selanne and Ales Hemsky. Boston – Teemu Selanne, Ales Hemsky and Mike Knuble. Los Angeles – Rick Nash, Teemu Selanne and Ales Hemsky. Chicago – Nikolai Khabibulin, Bryan Allen and Derek Roy. Washington – Ales Hemsky and Antoine Vermette. Nashville – Ales Hemsky and Jarret Stoll.
Top 10 players to watch: 1. Rick Nash 2. Teemu Selanne 3. Jeff Carter 4. Ales Hemsky 5. Ryan Malone 6. Jarrett Stoll 7. Jaroslav Specek 8. Derek Roy 9. Antoine Vermette 10. Nikolai Khabibulin.
Keep an eye on: Mike Knuble, Bobby Ryan, Josh Harding, Jonathan Bernier, and Ryan Miller.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: If the NHL is helping out the Devils financially, “it is shortsighted for the league to withhold approval of deals that presumably would strengthen these wards of the state.” If they are able to trade for Marek Zidlicky, “it would be penny-wise but pound-foolish for the league to prevent it.”
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: The Leafs could look for a #1 goalie in the summer.
- Spector’s Hockey via twitter: Hockey Central suggested that the Blackhawks and Sharks might have interest in Oilers Nikolai Khabibulin.
- Dustin Leed via twitter: Scouting the Flyers – Penguins game: 2 Blue Jackets (GM Scott Howson and senior advisor Craig Patrick were on the list to attend), 2 Blackhawks, Kings, Predators, Canadiens, Avalanche, Flames, Panthers and Blues. Randy Miller via twitter: Miller notes that 2 Blue Jackets executives have been at a Flyers 3 times this week. He thinks talks must be serious.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Scouting the Blue Jackets – Blackhawks game: Blues, Hurricanes, Senators, Washington, Red Wings, Rangers, Stars, Flyers and Canadiens.
- Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove notes by Spector’s Hockey (video not posted): Eric Francis said that some NHL GMs doubt Nash will get traded at the deadline. The Blue Jackets are looking for an impact player, 2 top prospects and a 1st round pick. Elliotte Friedman noted that the Blue Jackets are trying to push Nash on the Flyers, and that they’d prefer to move Jeff Carter to the Kings. Francis said that Patrick Kane is happy in Chicago and they are happy with him. Friedman suggested that the Blackhawks could face some questions if they have a short playoff run. Francis said the Flames haven’t had contract talks with Olli Jokinen, but he’s not going anywhere. Sam Gagner also isn’t going anywhere.
Radulov talk … Domino’s falling … Kubina names some teams … E. Johnson speculation … CBJ’s affected by trade talk
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 18th, 2012
- Chris Johnston via twitter: KHL President Medvedev said that Alex Radulov has 1 more year left on his contract with no out clause. Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: KHL’s SPCs dont’ have ‘out’ clauses, a ‘Gentleman’s agreement’ is different. Johnston asked Medvedev directly about Radulov’s returning to the NHL and he said he had 1 year left. Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie mentions that Radulov always has an out clause and to ask Nashville. Chesnokov says that Radulov can’t leave Salavat without getting their blessing. If he leaves and Salavat complains, he has to go back.
- Sean Fitz-Gerald via twitter: Predators GM David Poile on trade activity: “It does work like dominoes … there are probably more things in the works now than there was 24 hours ago …”
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Dreger is hearing that the Red Wings and Flyers have made offers to Tampa for Pavel Kubina. Bruce Garrioch via twitter: 3 teams on Kubina’s list before he gives his list are the Blackhawks, Flyers and Red Wings.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Dreger asks Dater if he’d prefer some Erik Johnson speculation. Adrian Dater via twitter: Erik Johnson is NOT on the market. Dreger responds with that he doesn’t have to be on the market to be a part of trade discussions, and that it happens all the time. Also doesn’t mean that he’ll be traded. Dater admits that it is true and that he believes Johnson will stay.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets R.J. Umberger on trade talk:
“It’s extremely tough,” winger R.J. Umberger said. “Some of the guys they’re talking about … a guy like Nash being all over the news — whether it’s true, if it happens or doesn’t happen — it affects our team because he is this organization.
“When you think Columbus Blue Jackets, you think Rick Nash. It’s tough.”
There are no guarantees that Rick Nash will be dealt, but the Blue jackets will likely look different after the deadline. They’ve been shopping Jeff Carter, Umberger, Derick Brassard, Sammy Pahlsson and others.
- Bob Mitchell of the Toronto Star: (Reality check series Mason Raymond and Maple Leafs) Why a Raymond to Leafs deal could happen – Burke may think he can rekindle Raymond’s scoring touch. His contract isn’t too bad at $2.6 million and a RFA at the end of the year. Dave Nonis draft Raymond in 2005. Why it won’t happen – after a quick start, he’s struggled the last 25 games. His ice time has been reduced and has become “a non-factor” in many games. Will a change of scenery work for Raymond, and what would it cost a team to get him? (not much of a reason for it not happen)
Afternoon rumors involving: Blue Jackets, Jets, Sabres, Canadiens, Bruins, Flyers, Rangers, Kings, Avalanche, Islanders, Crosby, Hunter and starting goalies
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 17th, 2012
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Blue Jackets don’t expect to make any trades this weekend, but one phone call could change that.
- Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said yesterday there’s no doubt he’s a buyer. “I’m always going to be trying to acquire assets. I’m always looking to make our team better for the future.” “It’s not just other teams asking about (our young players),” he said. “There are a lot of things that are talked about.” Cheveldayoff said there hasn’t been any contract extension talk with any of their pending UFAs: Jim Slater, Tanner Glass, Kyle Wellwood, Tim Stapleton, Johnny Oduya, Randy Jones, Mark Flood and Chris Mason.
- Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Burnside thinks it’s time for the Sabres to start making some deals. The Canadiens should find a taker for Hal Gill and perhaps Andrei Kostitsyn. Travis Moen and Chris Campoli could also be moved. The Bruins and Rangers will both be looking to add some depth along the blueline. A source said the Flyers could also be looking at adding another Dman. Hurricanes Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek will be UFAs. Luke Schenn could be had if it helps the Leafs land a top 6 forward. The Kings Jack Johnson could be in play, but they’d need to get a top forward back
- Adrian Deter of the Denver Post: Dater thinks the Avalanche will move a defenseman, with Shane O’Brien making sense. Dater also thinks teams will be interested Ryan Wilson, Ryan O’Byrne and Kyle Quincey.
- David Hutchinson of the Star Ledger: The Devils are looking for a veteran defenseman. Marek Zidlicky is one possibility, and he’s already waived his no trade clause for them.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: The Islanders are looking for a top 4 defenseman.
- Pens Inside Scoop via twitter: Penguins Sidney Crosby skated with teammates today because of ice time availability. No change in his status.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Bruins forward Rich Peverley is out 4 to 6 weeks with a grade 3 MCL sprain in his right knee.
- Renaud Lavoie via twitter: The Kings have put Trent Hunter on waivers.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Jonas Hiller will start in net for the Ducks tonight against Martin Brodeur and the Devils.
- Harvey Fialkov via twitter: Tomas Vokoun will start for the Capitals against Jose Theodore and the Panthers.
- Marc Antoine Godin via twitter: Carey Price will start in net for the Canadiens against the Sabres.
Free Agent and injury notes involving: Ruutu, Bruins, Benn, Nugent-Hopkins, Potter and Zetterberg … Scouting the Flyers-Sabres
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 17th, 2012
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said a decision involving Tuomo Ruutu’s contract extension is now expected to come early next week. The “parameters” of extension are set. “Now we have to see where it goes. We don’t want this to drag on.”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Bruins have made contract extension offers to pending UFAs Chris Kelly, Shawn Thornton, Gregory Campbell and Dan Paille.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars forward Jamie Benn suffered cut on his leg by Flames Mark Giordano’s skate. He’s listed as day-to-day. He is not likely to play on Saturday, but is a possibility for Sunday.
- Jim Matheson Edmonton Journal: Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins practiced yesterday in a no contact jersey. He won’t play on Friday and is questionable for Sunday. Next Tuesday against the Flames could be the best bet. Defenseman Cory Potter, out with groin injury, skated yesterday but is not ready.
- Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News: Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg has a lower body injury and won’t play tonight against the Predators. Jimmy Howard expects to play on Sunday.
- Randy Miller via twitter: Scouting the Flyers-Sabres game: 2 Blue Jackets and Sharks, Avalanche, Capitals, Canadiens, Penguins and Senators.
Friedman talks Nash and deadline … What the Wings are looking for … Leafs should take run at Nash … Miller for Kane? Giggy injured
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 16th, 2012
- Fan 590 Audio: Elliotte Friedman on Prime Time Sports talking about Rick Nash rumors and the trade deadline.
- Fan 590 Audio: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk on Hockey Central @ Noon discussing the recent Stars struggles and the trade deadline.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said ‘Nothing is imminent right now,” on the trade front. Holland would like to add some depth. A player with some grit, either up front or on the blueline. A goal scorer would also be nice. He is not interested in adding a goalie. “We like the chemistry of our team,” Holland said. “We like what we have. We feel we have a good team. We’re not going to trade away assets for a player who may not crack our lineup.”
- Craig Custance of ESPN: It’s likely the Red Wings will attempt to bring in depth at the deadline.
“There’s a little more chatter the last few days than there has been because the deadline is coming,” Holland said when we chatted on Tuesday afternoon. “Will we do something? We’re going to explore. We have cap space; we structured it at the beginning of the year that way. We’d like to give our team a bit of a boost.”
The Red Wings can add at least $15 million in salary at the deadline. Teemu Selanne would be a perfect fit. Travis Moen of the Canadiens, Sammy Pahlsson of the Blue Jackets and Paul Gaustad of the Sabres could be options. They won’t be giving up top D prospect Brendan Smith. A NHL scout on the Red Wings deadline strategy:
“For the Red Wings, it’s a matter of what are you willing to give up? You have to be careful; you have to keep your young guys. Depth up front would be great for them, not necessarily on the top two lines but in the bottom six and on defense. You’re not sure what you’re going to get out of Jakub Kindl in a playoff run; you don’t know how much hockey you’re going to get from Mike Commodore. Goaltending is not an issue as long as Jimmy Howard recovers.”
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Zeisberger thinks the Maple Leafs should take a run at Rick Nash. He has a special combination of skill and strength. If they did bring in Nash, don’t expect Mikhail Grabovski to get his $5 million contract from Burke. GM Scott Howson will demand Jake Gardiner as part of the package.
- Randy Miller via twitter: Miller thinks it may be worth a shot to do a Ryan Miller for Patrick Kane deal as the Blackhawks need a goalie bad. Tim Sassone via twitter: Patrick Kane is “absolutely not” on the trade block.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche lost J.S. Giguere to a groin injury last night. Peter Mueller missed the game with a torso injury, and TJ Galiardi left the game with a torso ailment.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Struggling Blues forward Chris Stewart found himself practicing with the 4th line yesterday, and is expected to remain their for their game tonight. Carlo Colaiacovo had x-rays on his wrist. Kent Huskins is expected to replace him. Alex Steen practiced but is not close to returning. Andy Strickland via twitter: Colaiacovo has a sprained wrist.
- Randy Miller via twitter: Carle, Bourdon, JVR, Read and Briere were on the Flyers 2nd power play unit yesterday at practice.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs defenseman Luke Schenn was made a healthy scratch last night. Keith Aulie replaced Schenn.
- Seth Rorabaugh via twitter: Scouting the Penguins-Ducks game last night: Lightning, Rangers, Bruins, Canucks, Blackhawks, Jets, Avs, Oilers, Kings, Leafs, Devils, Hurricanes, Flyers and Red Wings.
Afternoon NHL rumors and notes: Carter, Kings, Radulov, Ruutu, Capitals, Stastny, ‘Hawks, Glencross, Duchene, Green … Devils and Leafs lines
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 13th, 2012
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson and Jeff Carter’s agents won’t speak publicly about the situation. Carter agent did confirm though that Carter has not requested a trade. There are probably 5 or 6 teams that would be in the market for Carter. The Kings, Flames and Maple Leafs could be in the hunt for him. If the Kings are involved, Jonathan Bernier would be in the mix. If Calgary is interested, maybe Jay Bouwmeester could be part of the deal. Portzline wonders if the Blue Jackets and Canucks would do a Carter (10 years, $5.27 million cap hit) for Roberto Luongo (10 years, $5.33 million cap hit) deal.
- David Boclair of the Nashville City Paper: Predators GM David Poile on Alexander Radulov:
“He’s a top-six forward that a lot of people would say we’re missing.” “He’s the best player not playing in the NHL.”
If/when he returns to the NHL, he still have 1 year left on his entry level deal. Once Salavat Yulaev is finished this season, Radulov is free to come back to the NHL and Predators if he chooses. Poile has been told that Radulov’s KHL deal has an ‘out’ clause. His NHL deal is for $980,000 and his KHL deal was a reported 3 years at between $8-$13 million. If Radulov was to return this season, the Preds would be adding a top 6 without having to give up a player or prospect.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: A decision to either re-sign or trade Tuomo Ruutu is not expected until later this week.
- Stephen Whyno via twitter: Capitals owner Ted Leonsis: “wish us speedy recovery to some of our players – and hope we can add some jump via the trade markets during the next few weeks.”
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Kings fans are frustrated with the lack of deal for a scorer, but Bernstein assures that the Kings are considering many options, some of which are not publicized yet.
- The Fourth Period: Avalanche forward Paul Stastny could be in the Kings list of possible trade targets.
“(The Kings) healthy scratched Dustin Penner and put two rookies (Dwight King and Jordan Nolan) playing their first NHL game this season with Mike Richards against the Islanders, looks like they’ve hit the panic button to me,” an NHL insider said Saturday evening. “I know Statsny is a center, but so is Jeff Carter and Paul only has two years left on his deal and there are zero concerns with his attitude.”
The Avalanche could use Stastny to rebuild their defense and to add depth at forward. A source added if they could get Jack Johnson in a package, they look long and hard at a deal. Stastny has a $6.6 million cap hit through 2013-14. Lightning winger Ryan Malone could be another Kings target.
- Adam Jahns via twitter: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said that head coach Joel Quenneville is “absolutely the guy” and that he’s not looking for a goaltender.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Chris Higgins has been battling staph infections. Higgins should be skating today, and an update could be coming later. His progress could determine if GM Mike Gillis looks at their top 6 or bottom 6. Defenseman Keith Ballard’s neck injury should be updated today as well.
- Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames winger Curtis Glencross is estimated to return the first week of March.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Flames center Mikael Backlund suffered an upper body injury on Saturday and will be out at least a month.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Matt Duchene practice today in a no-contact jersey. It’s looking like he could be back soon.
- Stephen Whyno via twitter: Capitals defenseman Mike Green took part in Capitals optional skate today.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils lines: Parise-Henrique-Kovalchuk; Sykora-Elias-Clarkson; Ponikarovsky-Zubrus-Bernier; Boulton-Josefson-Janssen.
- David Alter via twitter: Maple Leafs lines: Lupul-Bozak-Kessel,MacArthur-Grabovski-Connolly, Crabb-Lombardi-Kulemin, Boyce-Steckel-Brown-Armstrong. (I made the Connolly correction from the tweet link)
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: “If a player waives his “no trade” clause once he no longer has a “no trade” clause in his deal.” … “A player can provide a letter saying he is only waiving his “no trade” clause for that purpose. If he doesn’t, he is open season.” Kevin McGran via twitter: according to 2 sources: “a player retains NTC /NMC clause even if he waives it to accept trade. Rec’v'g team accepts player and all terms of deal.”
- Stephen Whyno via twitter: Thomas Greiss will start in net for the Sharks tonight against the Capitals. Michal Neuvirth said he’ll be starting tonight.
Free Agent and injury notes involving Parise, Parenteau, Mueller, and Malone … Potential Habs GMs
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries on February 13th, 2012
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said, “We will make every effort to re-sign Zach.” Parise might get $8 million on the open market.
- Arthur Staple of Newsday: Islanders GM Garth Snow has had preliminary talks with P.A. Parenteau’s agent, Allan Walsh. Parenteau, 29, is making $1.25 million and is having a career year. He could be looking to triple his current salary. Parenteau loves playing on the Island, and wants to stay. The Isles still could shop him at the deadline, but they need his scoring down the stretch.
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Dater thinks that Peter Mueller could get extended for a year or 2.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: The Lightning are being cautious with Ryan Malone. He’s been given the green light to go, should be back this week.
- Jack Todd of the Montreal Gazette: Todd’s list of potential Canadiens GM replacements if they fire Pierre Gauthier: Pat Brisson, Claude Loiselle, Pierre McGuire, Julien BriseBois, Marc Bergevin, André Savard and Blair Mackasey.
Blues could look at Ruutu … Stewart may be available … Carter may interest Leafs … Green skating … Stempniak on crutches
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 2nd, 2012
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Blues may look at Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu. Strickland thinks the Blues can find their scoring touch internally, but that doesn’t mean they should not try to improve their roster. It might take someone like Chris Stewart to get him though. Stewart has struggled this year and will be due at least $3.25 million, a RFA after the season. Moving Stewart could come back to bit them if they did move him. For the right price they might move him, but it might not make sense doing it for a rental. T.J. Oshie and David Perron will also need new deals in the summer. The Blues biggest need may be a top 4 defenseman that can play the left side. An experienced, rugged Dman would be ideal. The Blue Jackets aren’t moving Rick Nash, but they wouldn’t mind moving Jeff Carter, and Strickland doesn’t think it will be as hard to do as most think. Ray Whitney may not be a fit with the Blues.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: If the rumors out of St. Louis are true that Chris Stewart could be available, Dater thinks the Avalanche should look at bringing him back. Stewart hasn’t happy when he was dealt to the Blues, and is still friends with some of the Avs. Stewart replacing Hejduk as a top 6 winger would make sense. Dater would offer up David Jones, who also has lost his scoring touch this year. Stewart is a RFA at seasons end, Jones is a UFA.
- Bob Mitchell of the Toronto Star: Mitchell thinks that Jeff Carter would look good between Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul. The Blue Jackets gave up a 1st round pick which turned out to be Sean Couturier and Jakob Voracek, so they would still need to get a good return back. Why it could happen: Carter has struggled this year but he is a 30-40 goal scorer. They may be able to get him at a discounted rate due to 10 years left on his contract. Why it won’t happen: He has a no trade clause, he has 10 years left at $5.27 million cap hit, and Burke doesn’t like long contracts.
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Bruins Nathan Horton will have missed his 3rd consecutive game with a ‘mild concussion. “He’s still where he was a few days ago. He’s feeling better, but not the stages of where he’s working out,” said Julien. “The day he does [feel better], I’m going to be the first to let you know that he’s on the bike now and that he’s moving forward.”
- Brian McNally via twitter: Capitals defenseman Mike Green said he’s on schedule from his sports hernia surgery. He was expected to be out 4 to 6 weeks. Stephen Whyno via twitter: Mike Green skated the last 3 days.
- Roger Millions via twitter: Flames winger Lee Stempniak left the arena on crutches and a soft boot on his left foot, could be long-term.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: Alex Steen and Andy McDonald skated with the extras today, so it looks like they may not be ready for tomorrow.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson is getting closer to making a decision if he’ll play another season. He said 50% yes, the other 50% was up to his wife. They’ll talked about it over the next couple days.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Regardless of what the NHL turns up in their investigation to the Kings-CBJ clock issue, the game stands with a Kings win. Lisa Dillman via twitter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi in an email: “Those clocks are sophisticated instruments that calculate time by measuring electrical charges called coulombs. Given the rapidity and volume of electrons that move through the measuring device the calibrator must adjust at certain points which was the delay you see – the delay is just recalibrating for the clock moving too quickly during the 10 – 10ths of a second before the delay – this insures that the actual playing time during a period is exactly 20 minutes – that is not an opinion – that is science.”
Bruins not talking Thomas trade … Focus now turns to Ruutu, Allen and Pitkanen … Liles doesn’t think it’s a concussion … Kane back to Winnipeg

- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said via email on Tim Thomas trade rumors: “Not trading him. I have not talked to anyone and I don’t plan to.”
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford has a policy not to re-sign players during the season, but Tim Gleason was an exception yesterday. It was the first time he’s done that. Rutherford said he’s getting lost of calls for Tuomo Ruutu. Darren Dreger via twitter: Hurricanes trade focus now switches to Ruutu, Bryan Allen and Joni Pitkanen. Pitkanen’s injury may not interfere with a trade.
- Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames GM Jay Feaster on the radio yesterday: “our mandate is to win now.”
- Jonas Siegel of TSN: Leafs defenseman John-Michael Liles believes he doesn’t have a concussion, but his issues stem from a neck problem.
“Everybody wants to call it a concussion,” he exclaimed to TSN.ca. “Everybody says ‘Oh, if you have whiplash you have a concussion’ … I wasn’t sitting there going ‘Oh man I feel so foggy’ or anything like that, it just felt like I was just completely locked up and it was cutting off my focus and things like that.
“It all seemed like it was always neck-related and it almost felt like it was cutting off the flow to my brain sometimes just because it was so stiff.”
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets Evander Kane and Tim Stapleton are heading back to Winnipeg for further evaluation. Kane is out with a concussion and is not expected to play on their 4 game road trip. Dustin Byfuglien and Alex Burmistrov staked yesterday and are close to returning. They won’t play tonight, but could be in the lineup on Thursday.
- Dave Molinari via twitter: Sidney Crosby will skate today and will be off tomorrow.
- Tim Panaccio via twitter: The earliest Flyers forward Daniel Briere returns is this weekend. James van Riemsdyk is not expected to play tonight.

- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Semyon Varlamov will start in net for the Avalanche tonight against the Oilers.
Morning rumors involving: Ruutu, Clowe, Moen, Carter, Thomas, Canadiens, Hurricanes, Flyers, Maple Leafs, Crosby, Duchene, Blackhawks and Blue Jackets
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 30th, 2012
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Hurricanes have taken lots of calls on Tuomo Ruutu and he could be moved this week. Sharks GM Doug Wilson said there was no chance Ryane Clowe is going anywhere. The Canucks and Red Wings are just a couple of the teams that would be interested in Moen. One source is saying Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier is telling teams he’s not ready to start trading yet. The Blue Jackets will be looking to move their pending UFAs and possibly Jeff Carter. Carter doesn’t really want to be in Columbus, but can Howson find someone interested in his contract? He has 10 years left at a $5.27 million salary cap hit.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch doesn’t think the Bruins will move Tim Thomas when his no-movement clause expires on July 1st. The Canadiens haven’t decided if they will be buyers or sellers. GM Gauthier is looking for a big center. There was talk that they could be interested in Sabres center Derek Roy, but he’s 5’8″. Since it doesn’t look like Ryan Suter and Shea Weber will be available at the trade deadline, the Flyers will look at Hurricanes Tim Gleason, Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek. A Jeff Carter trade would more likely happen in the summer. The Maple Leafs would like to add a center, and he’d like to get something done in the next 48 hours (starting yesterday). Tuomo Ruutu is a possibility, but the Hurricanes are asking a lot for him.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The results from Sidney Crosby’s MRI and CAT scans could be released today. He returned to Pittsburgh over the weekend, and continued skating.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Yesterday marked the 4 week anniversary of Avalanche forward Matt Duchene’s knee injury that was to sideline him for at least a month. Though there is no official word on when he’ll return, Dater guesses it will be at least another couple weeks.
- Tim Sassone via twitter: The trade deadline is a month away, and Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman is not done. Sassone thinks they’ll a defenseman, maybe 2, or possibly another forward.
- Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: Don’t look for the Jets to be looking for a rental player by the trade deadline. They could be sellers if they remain out the playoffs.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Expect a roster move today by the Blue Jackets as they have 12 healthy forwards and 6 defenseman. Jeff Carter could be close.
Burke audio – Hopes to make a deal … A team wants Rangers to put Avery on re-entry … Crosby to skate … Mueller, Steen to return … Gionta tears bicep
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 12th, 2012
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke said he’s looking to make a trade in hopes of boosting the clubs playoff run.
“We’re a little small up front and we don’t have much playoff experience,” he noted. “If the playoffs started tomorrow, I would still like our chances. (But) we are looking to add and get better now.”
“I’m a January guy,” he reminded “I set my price and try and let my team play through the deadine (without worrying about trades). The math doesn’t work at the deadline when 24 teams are buying. There can only be one (Stanley Cup) parade.”
The cost to acquire a big center or winger could be 1 or more young assets or a 1st or 2nd rounder this year.
- Brian Burke audio on the Fan 590 with Bob McCown.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Sean Avery is sitting in the AHL despite a team asking the Rangers to put him on re-entry waivers. GM Glen Sather rejected the request, and are trying to make a minor-league trade in which they take on additional money. The team acquiring Avery would then be responsible for putting him on re-entry waives and risk another team claiming him, therefore taking on the ‘dead cap space’ if claimed. If claimed on re-entry waivers, Avery would carry a $445,000 cap hit for each team.
- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will skate this week. Crosby last practiced on Dec. 7th.
“He will be skating during this trip,” Bylsma said. “He also will, at some point in time, address the media. That will happen in the next few days. It isn’t a set plan, but it will happen.”
- Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: The Avalanche have activated forward Peter Mueller off the IR, and he could be in the lineup tonight against the Predators. Mueller has been battling concussions and head issues for 3 seasons with the Avs. The Avs have put defenseman Shane O’Brien on the IR.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: Blues forward Alex Steen could return to the lineup tonight after missing the last 6 games with a concussion. Steen passed his baseline test yesterday and plans to see how he feels at their morning skate.
- Louis Jean via twitter: Canadiens Brian Gionta could be done for the season with a bicep tear.
- Tony Marinaro via twitter: Canadiens defenseman continues his rehab and barring any setback is set to return in early February.
Ducks GM on a scouting trip … Blue Jackets to move some UFAs … Brodeur may not retire … Vanek has UBI or food poisoning or flu … Karlsson a late scratch
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 11th, 2012
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Ducks GM Bob Murray will have to decide by the trade deadline if this year is just a “hiccup or if there’s something fundamentally wrong with the core of the team.” Coach Bruce Boudreau doesn’t think they need a total blowup. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson: “At this point, we anticipate trading away some of our players, particularly the unrestricted ones.” Their UFAs are Kristian Huselius, Sammy Pahlsson, Vinny Prospal and Radek Martinek.
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Ducks GM Bob Murray is going on a scouting trip. Elliott was told that nothing is going on trade-wise for the Ducks at the moment, but the rumors will definitely be flying.
- Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: The 39 year old Martin Brodeur may not be thinking of retirement just yet.
“It’s funny, because I’ve asked a lot of players, and a lot of who are enjoying their retirement, but you know what? They all say they wish they could have maybe played another season. That makes me think, maybe I can stick around, if they still want me. So we’ll see.”
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres winger Thomas Vanek left last night’s game after taking a hit from Dion Phaneuf. The Sabres initially said it was an upper-body injury but later …
“He’s either got food poisoning, some type of virus, flu,” Ruff said after the game. “He wasn’t feeling well in warm-up. … If you watch his first three shifts, you could tell. That was part of the issue. That line didn’t get anything going. He had nothing. He emptied his tank in between periods and couldn’t go.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars center Mike Ribeiro has some knee issues that he wants to play through.
“He may fly in tomorrow,” Gulutzan added. “He has an MCL (tear) there, but there’s an old MCL (scar) there, so that pollutes the water (of the MRI) of what’s actually there. He has it and he’s limping around, but Ribs thinks he can play. But for his sake, we have to make sure that he’s stable enough and doesn’t get an injury there. He really wanted to come on the trip, we had to make him stay at home.”
- Alan Robinson of NHL.com: Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson was scratched just before game time last night due to an upper-body injury. Bruce Garrioch via twitter: An update will come on Karlsson’s status this morning at practice.
- Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Avs forward Matt Duchene is walking around fine, and is probable to return later this month. He’s been out since Dec. 29th with a knee injury.
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: Panthers goalie Jacob Markstrom will have minor knee surgery today. If it ends up being just a ‘scope,’ then it will be at least 3-4 weeks. This will be Markstrom’s 2nd surgery on his knee in the last 10 months. Jose Theodore could practice later this week.
- Mike Heika via twitter: The Stars have put Philip Larsen on the IR.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: There were only 3 scouts at the Leafs – Sabres game last night: Oilers, Flyers and Blues.

- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs center Tyler Bozak crashed into the boards during practice yesterday and was not able to finish. His status for tonight won’t be known until today. Matthew Lombardi is close, and could possible take Bozak’s spot.
“We have to figure that out. We don’t have room right now unless we find out (Bozak) is hurt bad enough that he could go on IR, which is seven days,” Wilson said. “But if he is only to possibly miss one game if at all, I don’t know what we would do in that situation.”

Could Radulov return to Preds next year? Skinner to IR … Leafs call up Kadri … Robidas questionable … Giordano skates
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 21st, 2011
Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: Alexander Radulov on thoughts about returning to the NHL:
“I am not going to say anything about the NHL because actually I never closed the door on the idea of playing there. As far as Salavat Yulaev is concerned, I have a contract with the team for this year and the next. However, it actually contains [a clause] with a possibility of early termination… I am not ruling out anything. Because if there are offers, we will consider them. But overall I am happy with everything at Salavat. You always want to play for a team that is challenging for something. You want to play to win, right?”
Radulov has 1 year left on his entry level deal with the Predators. There was an instance years ago involving Alexander Semin, with the Capitals tearing up the last year of his contract and signing him to a two year deal. Could the same be done for the Predators.
Mark Spector via twitter: The Hurricanes have put Jeff Skinner on the IR and called up Riley Nash.
David Alter via twitter: The Maple Leafs have called up Nazem Kadri, and put Dupuis on the IR. Maple Leafs lines: Lupul-Bozak-Kessel, Frattin-Grabo-Kulie, Kadri-Connolly-MacA, Steckel-Boyce-Crabb, extras, Lombardi,Orr,Rosehill
