  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres Jochen Hecht retired from the NHL last night.

    “It’s best for everybody to start a new life. It’s been a lot of fun. I’ve got some great memories. I lived here and loved this place for 10 years, 11 years, and Buffalo became a second home to me.

    “Buffalo has been like a second home for everybody. I was fortunate enough to play my first game in Buffalo with St. Louis, and I played my last game in Buffalo. It’s kind of full circle, came around. It was a lot of fun.”

    Sabres goalie Ryan Miller may have played his last game in a Sabres uniform.

    “Everything comes to an end. It’s not always clean and easy. Most of the time, it’s little bit dirty and not any fun. It was hard to watch these guys kind of leave a team one by one, but it’s the nature of sports, nature of life. You can’t just hold on to something that’s not sustainable. Everything becomes stagnant if you’re always trying to hold on to one thing.

  • Darren Dreger: Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said that rumors of him being Red Berenson’s successor at the University of Michigan are not true. He has two years left on his Red Wings contract and is happy being the Wings coach.
  • Bruce Garrioch: If the Stars decide to make a GM change, Garrioch wouldn’t be surprised if Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill is the top candidate.
  • Shawn Mitchell: The Blue Jackets sign forward Cam Atkinson to a 2-year, $2.3 million contract extension.
  • Alessandro Seren Rosso: Valeri Nichushkin was traded to Dynamo for $10 million. He’s on a two-year contract with an out-clause after one year, $2 million per year. Slava Malamud: There will be no Nichushkin next year, and likely for 2014-15. TJ ОвечкиH: Russian Media saying that Nichushkin was traded without his knowledge. Could trigger his decision to leave to the NHL.
  • Chip Alexander: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford on restructuring their blue line: ”We need to be a lot harder to play against. We made it too easy for opponents.”
  • Chip Alexander: Rutherford said that Jeff Skinner at center was an “experiment” but liked what he saw. Creates another option for next season.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devils David Clarksonwill be a UFA and he may get some offers to convince him to sign with someone else. There has been lots of speculation that the Maple Leafs will be interested.

    “I don’t know where I’ll be. I have no idea what will end up happening,” Clarkson told The Star-Ledger today. “There haven’t been any negotiations between Mr. (Lou) Lamoriello and my agent. I’ve had no decisions to make yet.”

    “I love playing here. My daughter is from here. I’ve loved my time here,” Clarkson pointed out. “What better situation could there be? I have a coach (Pete DeBoer) I’ve had since I was young who I believe, besides my father, has been the biggest part of my hockey career. And Mr. Lamoriello was the first GM to give me an opportunity.”

  • Ian Mendes: Craig Anderson will start in net for the Senators tonight. Robin Lehner could start on Sunday.

  • Mike Vogl: Capitals re-sign Eric Fehr to a 2-year, $3 million deal. $1.4 million next  year, $1.6 million in 2014-15. Aaron Volpatti signed a 2-year, $1.15 million deal with the Capitals. $550,000 next year and $600,000 in 2014-15.
  • Ansar Khan: Red Wings Drew Miller said that he doesn’t require surgery on his broken right hand. Out 4 to 6 weeks. Best case is that he’s back late 2nd round.
  • Farhan Lalji: GM Mike Gillis said that Cory Schneider’s injury is not serious and that if it were a playoff game, Schneider could “perhaps” play.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Kings Dustin Brown received a two game suspension and Wild’s Jason Pominville is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. The Wild haven’t called it a concussion.
  • Helene St. James: Red Wings Johan Franzen suffered an injury in last night’s game. GM Ken Holland said he’ll be re-evaluated this morning, and if he isn’t able to play, Mikael Samuelsson is ready to go. Todd Bertuzzi will play tonight. He almost played last night, but decided that he needed one more good practice.

    “I really wanted to play,” Bertuzzi said, “but I need to do one more skate. I need to be able to get pushing and shoving with the defensemen down low, I need to take a cross-check in the back, I need to be able to spin off and I need to be able to stop and start and take off with the puck.”

  • Mark Lazerus: Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville won’t name his No. 1 goalie: ” Right now we’re just going along here and we’ll see how it plays out.”

  • Joe Haggerty: Bruins Nathan Horton won’t travel with the team due to an upper-body injury he sustained in the fight with Jarome Iginla.
  • Ian Mendes: Unlikely that Senators Erik Karlsson is in the lineup tonight.
  • Will DePaoli: Penguins Kris Letang and Marc-Andre Fleury won’t be in the Penguins lineup tonight. Pittsburgh Penguins: Letang has foot poisoning. Beau Bennett has an upper-body injury. Fleury’s wife is expecting. Sidney Crosby, James Neal, Paul Martin and Evgeni Malkin all skated today.
  • Kirk Penton: Jets Evander Kane didn’t skate this morning.
  • Joanne Ireland: Oilers Magnus Paajarvi was hit in the foot with a shot against the Avalanche, and won’t be in the lineup. Eric Belanger will be in the lineup. Ryan Whitney will also play.

Injury Notes: Emelin, Karlsson, Michalek, Theodore, Briere, Grossman and Staal

  • Canadiens.NHL.com: Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin is done for the season after suffering a torn ligament in his left knee.

    “Anytime you lose a player for the season it’s bad news, and this was a guy that was playing so well for us this year too. It sucks to see him have to go through that – I know what that’s like – but we’re going to have to find a way to fill that gap,” said Josh Gorges, addressing the news of Emelin’s injury following the Habs’ Monday morning practice. “The style he plays and what he brings to this team is hard to replace. It’s up to us to be resilient, find ways and find answers. You can’t stress too much about what isn’t there – you have to find a way to move on, as hard as that may be.”

  • Ian Mendes: As Erik Karlson skated yesterday, Senators goalie Craig Anderson said, “It’s not that far-fetched that he could play before the end of the regular season.” Daniel Alfredsson had been texting with Karlsson, and knew he planned on skating soon in an attempt to get back this season.
  • Ian Mendes: Senators coach Paul MacLean said that Milan Michalek is ”getting closer and closer” to returning to the lineup. It’s up to MacLean now when Michalek gets in.
  • George Richards: Panthers goalie Jose Theodore skated yesterday for the first time since suffering his groin injury. He hopes to be able to play before the end of the season.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers forward Daniel Briere practiced yesterday for the first time since suffering his concussion on March 23rd. He hopes to be able to return on for Saturday’s game against the Sabres. Defenseman Nicklas Grossman had setback last week on his recovery from a concussion.

    “We saw what happened to Nick in the past week with some setbacks,” said Briere, who skated on defense Monday just to get back on the ice, “and we’re just trying to make sure it doesn’t happen here again.”

  • Mike Johnston of Sportsnet: Rangers defesneman Marc Staal could back on the ice in the next 7 to 10 days, and returning before the end of the season according to Nick Kypreos. He’s been out since March 5th after taking a deflected shot by his eye.

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Source saying that the Senators have received several calls for Ben Bishop in the last day or so. They may be more inclined to wait until the summer to figure out their goalie situation. If a top-six forward was offered up for Bishop, then he could be moved and they would run with Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner.

    Sergei Gonchar will likely be saying with the Senators.

    Hurricanes Jussi Jokinen is getting interest, but only if the Canes take a player back.

    Still no contract talks between the Devils and pending UFA David Clarkson. Not that surprising with Lou at the helm.

  • Darren Dreger: Hurricanes defensman Jamie McBain is on the trade market. They’ll get some offers for him.
  • Darren Dreger: The Sabres haven’t received an offer for defenseman Robyn Regehr that has been worth approaching Regehr his approval.
  • Pierre LeBrun: Stars debating on whether to trade Jaromir Jagr or sign him. He’s getting lots of interest.
  • L.A. Lariviere: Jaromir Jagr’s agent, ”Jaromir likes Dallas, he likes the team. We’ll have to see if the interest is mutual” There are no contract talks scheduled as of now. On if it’s possible that Jagr is traded, ”anything’s possible right now.“
  • Renaud Lavoie: There won’t be anymore contract talks between the Stars and Derek Roy. Canucks are interested.
  • Mark Masters: Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis: ’The calls have picked up but its been relatively slow so far’ … ’I would prefer a hockey trade where we’re giving up some assets & getting assets back. Difficult to find that right now.’ On if he wasn’t able to make a deal, ‘I wouldn’t be disappointed at all’
  • Chris Johnston: Nonis, ”Some (available) players it would be a reach just to say they can help you.”

  • Arthur Staple: The Islanders have put defenseman Joe Finley on the IR retroactive to March 22nd.
  • Ian Mendes: Craig Anderson will travel with the Senators. There is no timetable, but it’s sounding like he could return this week.
  • Mark Lazerus: Blackhawks Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa “could play” on Thursday according to Joel Quenneville. Sharp said that he hasn’t been approached to move to center when he returns to the lineup.
  • Mark Masters: Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said that Clarke MacArthur and Leo Komarov will be re-evaluated today and hopeful that they will be cleared for contact soon.
  • Chris Nichols: The Avalanche put Milan Hejduk and Paul Stastny on the IR.

NHL Rumors I: Crowded goalie market, Regehr, Blackhawks and Yandle, Bruins and Ducks

  • Damien Cox: The simple facts are: the Leafs talked to the Canucks this week about Roberto Luongo, they have some interest, and the price has dropped. Darren Dreger: Sources say the Canucks called the Maple Leafs to revisit talks. The Flames hope to have a better gauge on Miikka Kiprusoff this weekend. Dreger thinks that although there is interest in goalie options for the Maple Leafs, they are likely to nothing. TSN Radio: Bob McKenzie thinks the Maple Leafs want to bring in a veteran goaltender.
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: If someone offers a draft pick and a low-end prospect, the Canucks wouldn’t take it. They still think they can get a player that can help them now, and a piece or two for the future. The goalie market is crowded. Mike Smith, Jimmy Howard and Niklas Backstrom could all be free agents. The trade market could include Ryan Miller, Jonathan Bernier, Jaroslav Halak and either Ben Bishop or Craig Anderson.
  • Bruce Garrioch: The Sabres are listening to offers for defenseman Robyn Regehr, but they haven’t ruled out giving him a contract extension.
  • The Fourth Period: The Blackhawks had sent multiple scouts to watch Keith Yandle this week. He has three years left at $5.25 million. It’s unclear how deep talks have been. The Red Wings, Oilers and Flyers also like Yandle. The Blackhawks could offer Niklas Hjalmarsson, a young NHL player or top prospect and a draft pick. The Blackhawks are also interested in Derek Roy.
  • Kevin Paul Dupont: An agent on the possibility of trading Martin St. Louis,

    “No way,’’ said the agent. “Yzerman’s got kids there who he wants to be around St. Louis. He’s not going anywhere.’’

    The Bruins could look at Sharks Dan Boyle, if they want to make their blue line a priority.

  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks GM Bob Murray is keeping quiet on their needs. They’ve gotten by without a second line center so far this season. Mike Ribeiro could be a rental option if he doesn’t re-sign with the Capitals. Derek Roy and Derick Brassard are other options.

NHL Rumors III: Backups that could be available, Neuvirth, Ribeiro rejects offer, Sharks and Predators

  • Justin Goldman of NHL.com: Goldman lists 5 backups who could be moved by the deadline.

    1. Jonathan Bernier (LA): 7-2-0 with a 1.94 and .923 SV%.

    2. Michal Neuvirth (WSH): Only five appearances since Feb. 1st. Career 53-35-10 record, 2.68 GAA and .908 SV%

    3. Ben Bishop (OTT): The Senators will be back to the three-headed monster when Craig Anderson returns. Could dangle Bishop for help up-front. Has a 2.54 GAA and .923 SV% in 11 games this season.

    4. Steve Mason (CBJ): The more Sergei Bobrovsky plays, the lower Mason’s value gets. Will be a free agent and likely not qualified by the Blue Jackets.

    5. Nikolai Khabibulin (EDM): The 40-year just posted a 43-save shut. He can still play despite and age and health. A good mentor for a young starter. Has won a Stanley Cup before. The Blue Jackets and Capitals could value someone like Khabibulin.

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals Michal Neuvirth is set to be a restricted free agent after the season. He hasn’t played much and isn’t focusing on being traded at the deadline.

    “I’m not worried about these things if something’s going to happen, if not. I’m just practicing hard to be ready,” Neuvirth said. “It’s my goal to be No. 1 — if not here, maybe somewhere else. Now I am here and I am focusing on playing for Capitals right now.”

  • Stephen Whyno of the Washington Times: Capitals Mike Ribiero has made it known that he’s looking for a four or five year deal, so it’s not much of surprise that he turned down a 3-year, $14 million offer, according to Renaud Lavoie of RDS.

    “I can put things in different places at the right time,” Ribeiro said Thursday. “I don’t think about it before the game or during the next few days or so. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. So we’ll see what this week brings us and then we’ll go from there.”

  • Pierre LeBurn of ESPN: Ryane Clowe might be dealt by the deadline, but the Sharks aren’t giving up on the playoffs.

    “We just feel like we’re still going to make the playoffs, to be honest with you,” captain Joe Thornton told ESPN.com on Wednesday. “We feel like we have a real good team still. There’s no reason for us not to make the playoffs. We’re sitting in eighth right now. We think if we take care of business at home right now we’ll be in.”

    Sharks pending UFA Michal Handzus could also be on the move. When looking at what the Sharks might do in the offseason, it’s fair to ask where Joe Thornton fits in. The 33-year old has one year left at $7 million.

    “Yeah, but you’re so caught up in the moment right now. You can’t think about tomorrow,” said Thornton. “We’ll wait and see. Right now I’m just focused on the next game.”

    What are the Predators plans for the trade deadline?

    “I’m day-to-day,” said Poile with a chuckle in a conversation with ESPN.com on Wednesday. “Call me after all the games are over on the night of April 2. It’ll be a touch bit clearer.”

    “This 48-game schedule is not normal. Everything about it is not normal. The condensed schedule, the travel, especially for us in the West, it’s all different,” said Poile. “And consequently I have to imagine the trade deadline is different. …

    “Maybe for the majority of teams, status quo might be a good position to be in come the trading deadline, based on the closeness of the races.”

    The Predators could use scoring help, and have been linked to Stars Derek Roy.

  • Will DePaoli: Penguins coach Dan Bylsma expects to keep Kunitz, Crosby and Dupuis together.
  • Jonas Siegel: Maple Leafs Leo Komarov out skating this morning. He was expected to be out 7-10 days, been 7 days now.

  • Pierre LeBrun: Hurricanes Jussi Jokinen cleared waivers. LeBrun thinks there is a chance that someone trades for Jokinen if the Hurricanes eat a bit of his contract.
  • Pierre LeBrun: The Bruins claim Kaspers Daugavin’s from the Senators.
  • Bob McKenzie: Devils prospect Jon Merrill has decided to leave the University of Michigan and has signed with the Devils. He’ll report to the AHL.
  • Steve Zipay: Source saying the Rangers are in the mix for UMass defenseman Conor Allen, who will be leaving after his junior year.
  • Ian Mendes: All three Senators goalies were on the ice this morning. Craig Anderson was taking shots. Anderson said he won’t play tomorrow, but Saturday against the Leafs is possible.
  • NHL.com: Sabres Thomas Vanek suffered an upper-body injury last night. He’ll be re-evaluated today. Mike Harrington: Vanek hasn’t been ruled out for Thursday. Drew Stafford will be back in for sure.

  • New York Rangers: Rangers Marc Staal was examined by an ophthalmologist and a maxillofacial surgeon today. “The injury has improved significantly and both doctors are optimistic that Marc will make a full recovery.”
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators goalie Craig Anderson’s ankle isn’t getting any better.

    “He does (need more time),” said coach Paul MacLean. “I don’t think he’s had a setback, but it hasn’t responded like we anticipated. We’re going to make sure (he gets rest).”

  • Rich Chere via twitter: Devils coach Peter De Boer said that Martin Brodeur is “feeling better” but not close to returning. Brodeur is no longer day-to-day.
  • Philadelphia Flyers: The Flyers announce that Nicklas Grossman, Andrej Meszaros and Matt Read are all day-to-day. Eric Wellwood was loaned back to the Adirondack Phantoms.
  • Katie Strang via twitter: The Devils have sent forward Cam Janssen and goalie Keith Kinkaid back to the AHL and recalled goalie Jeff Frazee.
