- Elliotte Friedman of CBC: Friedman thinks the Mikhail Grabovski’s deal could have been done a week or 2 ago but Burke may have wanted to see if he would get a crazy offer at the deadline. It’s rumored that the Stars wanted Cody Hodgson for Steve Ott. The Leafs tried to get Hodgson as well. The Canucks ‘targeted” a few clubs that they thought had the match they wanted. Friedman thinks they liked Brandon Sutter from the Hurricanes and John Carlson of the Capitals. Former Oilers Tom Gilbert said he didn’t demand a trade.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Matt Duchene injured his right ankle in the 3rd period of last night’s game. He’ll be re-evaluated today.
- Lance Hornby via twitter: Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul has an upper-body injury and Colby Armstrong has a broken nose.
- Andrew Gross of the Bergon Record: Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky left last night’s game in the first period after getting into a fight with Ryan Carter.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers Jakub Voracek got rocked by Niklas Kronwall last night. There was no injury update after the game as he was still be evaluated by doctors. Jaromir Jagr also left the game with a lower body injury.
- John Down of the Calgary Herald: Flames forward Tim Jackman left after 1 shift after taking a big hit from Alexei Emelin.
- Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Blue Jackets defenseman Nikita Nikitin blocked a shot off the foot in the 1st period and did not return.

- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask has a lower abdomen/groin strain, and will be out 4-6 weeks.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: The Bruins have signed goalie Marty Turco. Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Turco has to clear waivers, and he’s not eligible for the playoffs.
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Senators GM Bryan Murray and Lightning GM Steve Yzerman are among the GMs who think that the red line should be brought back. Conspiracy Theory: Senators goalie Craig Anderson severed tendons on his right hand presumably from a knife cut, Anderson is right handed. “I really don’t care to talk about the details of it all,” Anderson told reporters in his first comments since the incident. “Freak accident. Happened in the kitchen. Leave it at that. Something you learn from. Unfortunately, it was a costly mistake.” The Kings got several offers for Dustin Brown at the trade deadline, but they decided to keep him for their playoff run. He’ll likely be traded in the offseason.
- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks winger Marty Havlat was skating on a line with Benn Ferriero and Brad Winchester yesterday. He’s getting closer and will be traveling with the team, but he’s not giving a timetable when he’ll return.
- Bill Beacon of the Globe and Mail: Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov practiced without his ‘no-contact’ jersey yesterday:
“I’m cleared for contact,” he said. “I need a little bit more time to practice with the team and as soon as I feel ready to go I’m going to play.
“Of course I’m happy. I didn’t play for a long time. I just want to jump in there and feel the game and have fun. I miss the game a lot. I want to come back as soon as I can.”
He’ll travel with the team, but it’s not known if he’ll get in a game this week.
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen is out with a back injury, but he isn’t expected to be out long.
- Steve Simmons via twitter: Brian Burke this morning on Newstalk 1010 radio when asked if his job was on the line: “I think its an ignorant question and a gutless one.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Richard Bachman will start in net for the Stars tonight against the Canucks.
- Ian Mendes via twitter: Ben Bishop is expected to start tonight against the Lightning.

- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: MLSE has faith in Brian Burke:
“Obviously the team is struggling,” Tom Anselmi, executive vice-president and COO for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, said in a Thursday e-mail to the Toronto Sun. “It’s been disappointing for our fans, but it’s not over yet. We have faith in Brian and his people to get us back on track.”
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Kings Scott Parse skated for the first time yesterday since he had hip surgery early this season. It’s still unlikely that he’ll play this season. Simon Gagne (concussion) is skating as well, but it’s still unknown when he’ll return to full-practice.
- Minnesota Wild via twitter: Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom will be out 2 to 4 weeks with a groin strain.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: The Wild lost Cal Clutterbuck and Nick Palmieri last night to upper-body injuries. The extent of the injuries are not known yet.
- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Kris Letang has not been diagnosed with a concussion, though it remains possible.
“He’s got symptoms — not dramatic at this point,” Bylsma said. “But certainly (he’s) going to get home and get evaluated by our doctors.”
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Blues forward Matt D’Agostini (concussion) could start skating next week. Jamie Langenbrunner is still in a walking boot, and is at least 2 weeks away.
- Dallas Morning News: Steve Ott on all the trade talk that surrounded him leading up to the trade deadline:
“For sure, I would be lying if I said it didn’t bother me. 12 years in the Dallas area that I’ve been in, my daughter is a Texan and I can go down the list on how I feel about the Dallas area being my home. Anytime you talk about uplifting yourself from a community that really you enjoy, it’s tough. I was thinking about it for a month and a half when I started hearing stuff and talking to people about it, but the professional side is you go out there and work as hard as you can and you continue to take care of the things you can control, and that’s kind of how I approached the whole situation. Obviously, Monday was a difficult day because I didn’t know where I stood until 2:05 when the deadline came in and you find out where you’re supposed to be. I had a couple of cocktails and. some Bud Light to relax. I had trade center on the whole night and tried not to pull my hair out or bite my nails off. I made it pretty clear that I wanted to be a Dallas Star and continue to be a Dallas Star.”

- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons looks at the Leafs under Burke’s reign. Next year will be his 5th season managing the teams. Simmons notes that it is clear now that there will be a coaching change. Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Many people would be shocked to see Burke fire Ron Wilson. Garrioch notes it would make no sense to have Scott Gordon as an interim coach, Rick Dudley would lighten up the room.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators Erik Karlsson will be a RFA at the end of the season, and will be in line for a big, long-term contract. Karlsson may be in the same situation like Steven Stamkos was, with rumblings of teams sniffing around with possible offer sheets.
- Greg Brady via twitter: Brady is hearing that it’s very likely that Mikhail Grabovski’s contract extension will be done by the end of March.
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said that they’ll get to contract talks for their 7 UFAs (Chris Mason, Jim Slater, Tanner Glass, Kyle Wellwood, Tim Stapleton, Randy Jones and Mark Flood) in due time, but right now they are focusing on getting to the payoffs.
- Adam Jahns of the Sun-Times: Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews did some physical activity yesterday, but there is still no timetable for his return.
- Peter Pupello of NHL.com: Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman is out with an upper-body injury, but it may not be a concussion. The injury hasn’t been diagnosed, and he’ll see more doctors in the next few days. Vincent Lecavalier could be back in 10 days. Marc-Andre Bergeron is still being bothered by a bad back and it’s possible he’s done for the year.
- Jason Gregor via twitter: The Oilers have returned Yann Danis back to the AHL. Nikolai Khbabibulin will be ready to return on Friday.
- Shelly Anderson Pittsurgh Post-Gazette: Penguins forward Tyler Kennedy (high ankle sprain) has been cleared to practice. Kennedy has missed the last 10 games.
- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Kris Letang left last night’s game with a head injury after taking a hit from Eric Nystrom. Coach Dan Bylsma said Letang is day-to-day. Video below has the hit. Do you think Nystrom should be suspended?

- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk had some offers that they strongly considered for Steve Ott and Sheldon Souray.
“I would say there were a couple of things on the table that took a lot of time to sort through,” Nieuwendyk said. “But at the end of the day, we had a responsibility to put the best team on the ice right now to challenge for the playoffs and we didn’t want to risk moving anything that would not help us as far as the return moving into the future.”
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC: Nashville’s big pitch for Rick Nash did not include Ryan Ellis. One GM thought the Sharks could have had a deal for Nash if they still had Charlie Coyle. The Leafs and Flyers sniffed around Josh Harding. Some teams thought Steve Ott was destined for the Maple Leafs, but the Stars changed their minds.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Sources are saying that the Stars wanted a 2nd round pick, a high end prospect and a roster player for Steve Ott. They also wanted a 2nd round pick and high end prospects for Sheldon Souray. The Islanders continue to have talks with Evgeni Navokov. They have had no contract discussions with P.A. Parenteauf as of yesterday afternoon.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner may have been Scott Howson’s ‘must include’ list for any Rick Nash package.
- Mark Masters of TSN: Mikhail Grabovski’s agent said he plans on being in Toronto next week, and said ‘I believe that I will have some news for you’
- Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Told Nicklas Lidstrom is out.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Sharks will be getting Douglas Murray and Martin Havlat back before the playoffs. Talks between them and the Blue Jackets for Rick Nash hit a roadblock when the Sharks refused to include Logan Couture. The Sharks did inquire about James van Riemsdyk. The Stars received about “12 to 14″ inquires over the past couple weeks for Steve Ott. The Canucks were offering Mason Raymond, but that wasn’t enough. The Stars were not going to trade Ott for picks or prospects. Burke didn’t trade any of his players for 1st round picks as he didn’t want to send the message to his players that they were giving up on the playoffs. The Capitals took calls on Roman Hamrlik but didn’t find a fit. The Red Wings looked at Paul Gaustad but didn’t have a 1st.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said he’ll continue to try and trade Rick Nash in the offseason. “This is too important for our franchise and our fans to do a deal that is not in our best interest.” The Rangers made a late offer of Brandon Dubinsky, Tim Erixon, J.T. Miller, Christian Thomas and a 1st round pick. Howson added:
“I’ve had many teams express that they would have a ton more interest in the offseason,”“I just think it was the right thing to do, the truthful thing to do,” Howson said.“We wanted to make sure that everybody understood where everybody was on this issue because it’s a very important issue for our franchise.
“I think things will continue to be amicable between Rick and the organization.”
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks also noted the Rangers upped their offer to Brandon Dubinsky, Tim Erixon, J.T. Miller, Christian Thomas and a 1st round pick. Howson was after Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto, Derek Stepan or Carl Hagelin, Chris Kreider, and a 1st round pick.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers GM Dale Tallon said he didn’t come close to making a deal. There was talk that they might move pending UFA defenseman Jason Garrison, but decided against it.
“We made a lot of phone calls and identified what we wanted to add to our lineup,’’ Tallon said. “We couldn’t get what we wanted without mortgaging our future. There just wasn’t a lot of activity. … I’m happy with our team. We improved it. We’re going to stay with the team that has 70 points, is in first place and is battling for a playoff spot.’’

Leafs have firm offers … Not much cooking for Wings … Custance list of trades he’d like to see

- Darren Dreger via twitter: Maple Leafs have a couple firm offers on a number of players. They are getting interest in their 2nd line but nothing is imminent.
- Ansar Khan of MLive: The Wings are looking to add a decent-sized forward. GM Ken Holland has had some talks but wasn’t close t a deal as of yesterday afternoon. Holland is not looking for a depth defenseman.
“I’ve talked to a few managers today, but nothing’s really cooking,” Holland said. “There’s not a lot of players (available). Maybe things change in the next 18 or 24 hours. We’ll see. So many teams are in the playoff hunt.”
Sabres Paul Gaustad and Canadiens Travis Moen could be options. Other players available are Sammy Pahlsson, Steve Ott, Mike Knuble, Mikael Samuelsson, David Jones, Daniel Winnik and T.J. Galiardi.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: Admits deals are long-shots, but lists 10 trades he’d like to see: 1. Ryan Getzlaf for Matt Frattin, Luke Schenn and a 1st round pick. 2. Roberto Luongo for Jacob Markstrom and a 1st round pick 3. James van Riemsdyk for Steve Ott and a 1st round pick. 4. Patrick Kane for Derek Roy and Andrej Sekera 5. Ryan Malone for Paul Martin 6. - The Fourth Period: A source is saying the Flyers are actively looking for a number 1 goalie. The source is saying they could package Sergei Bobrovsky and possibly James van Riemsdyk for the right goaltender. The Flyers could be looking at Nikolai Khabibulin, JS Giguere and Ondrej Pavelec. It’s unclear if the Jets would part with Pavelec, who’ll be a RFA at the end of the year.
- Helene St. James via twitter: The Red Wings would like to add a forward, but there’s not a lot teams selling, and the prices are high.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Brian Burke on calls for Ron Wilson’s firing, “I’m not contemplating a coaching change.”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Many teams are intersted in Avs UFAs David Jones and Daniel Winnik, and RFA T.J. Galiardi.

One player the Bruins could be looking at is Sammy Pahlsson. Jaroslav Spacek could be an option along the blueline.
”My motivating factors are, first of all, depth,” said Chiarelli, when asked his target areas. ”And then injury, especially to our forwards. Both Nathan (Horton) and (Rich Peverley) remain out, and though we expect both are going to be back, you have to make sure you are covered.”

- The Fouth Period: Several teams have inquired about Avalanche center Paul Stastny, with the Maple Leafs and Panthers showing the most interest. Greg Sherman and Brian Burke have spoken frequently, and the Avalanche have scouted the Leafs several times this month. The Avs could be looking to move defenseman Ryan O’Bryrne.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke:
“We’ve spent three years putting together some depth here,” Burke told Hockey Night In Canada a half hour before the Leafs laid an egg against Washington. “We’re not going to blow it all up to try to squeak in the eighth spot.”
“Teams that think they’re close and are trying to load up, teams that are banged up and trying to patch holes, teams that have under-achieved … we don’t fall in any of those categories. So from my perspective, we’re in the hunt. If we can add a piece that gives up a better shot at getting in the playoffs, we’re going to do it.”

“I don’t intent to move him at this time. That could change, but I see him as a guy that we wait until the end of the year and see if we can sign him then.”

Nick Kypreos via twitter: The Maple Leafs, Flyers and Canucks have heavy interest in Steve Ott. The Flyers are reluctant to move James van Riemsdyk.
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Avalanche Milan Hejduk and Paul Stastny aren’t going anywhere. David Jones, Cody McLeod and T.J. Galiardi are in play. The Blues were interested in Capitals Roman Hamrlik last summer, and could be interested now. Source saying that one team has an offer in for Steve Mason, who still has a year left on his contract at $3.2 million. The Bruins could look at Mike Knuble with the injuries to Nathan Horton and Rich Peverley. The Sabres would love to move Brad Boyes, but he’s owed $4 million next season.

State of the Florida Panthers: NHL Trade Deadline Edition

The Panthers are in a unusual position. They have not made the playoffs since 2000. Dale Tallon and assistant GM Mike Santos have done a great job rebuilding this team. As a result about this they now rank 20th in attendance which should shut down any chance at relocation.
The Panthers are obviously buyers at the deadline. They have been propelled by the great additions of Kris Versteeg, Tomas Fleischmann, Brian Campbell, and Jose Theodore. As there roster sits right now they have a tremendous amount of depth but not much frontline talent. They are also ravaged by injuries but have the #1 farm system in the game with the likes of Nick Bjustad, Jonathan Huberdeau, Quinton Howden, Jacob Markstrom, and Luke Shaw.

- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: With the trade deadline just days away, Brian Burke is being squeezed. The teams is struggling (losing 7 of 8), and he’s hoping to make a deal at a reasonable price. Does he overpay for a Rick Nash or not given to the high prices for others? Columbus is squeezing Burke on Nash, same with demands for backup goalies, and what it would take for Dustin Brown. Burke has worked hard to accumulate prospects like Jake Gardiner, Matt Frattin, Joe Colborne, Keith Aulie, Nazem Kadri and Jesse Blacker, and it’s difficult to package them off for a big-name expensive player. Does Burke trade away future players for short-term solutions, or avoid it all costs? Some want Nash or Brown now. The smartest decision may be to trade Mikhail Grabovski and Clarke MacArthur, keep the young guys and regroup, and fire Wilson.
- Randy Starkman of the Toronto Star: Former NHLer Mike Peca thinks the Maple Leafs should go after Mike Ribeiro or Ryan Getzlaf.
“There’s so many spots where they can benefit from getting somebody. They’re waiting to see if Reimer will shake out to be a good goalie. I think the one thing they do need is a centre. Somebody who might be available is a guy like Mike Ribeiro from Dallas, who’s just a good guy with the puck and can move it around and seems to have a personality and a swagger that can hold up to the pressures of Toronto. I don’t know if (Ryan) Getzlaf will still be available. He’d be a guy that’d be a perfect fit in Toronto. But I think for them to get a guy who can be a No. 1 centre, play those minutes, distribute the puck is somebody the Leafs would love to get. They talk about Rick Nash, but then that’s adding another scoring winger without addressing what the need is: A bona fide No. 1 centre that’s going to anchor that top line for years to come.”
Darren Pang thinks Josh Harding and Chris Mason may be good options for the Maple Leafs
“You need a goaltender there that you’re not going to give up too much for … the guys that are unrestricted. Josh Harding would be a good fit there … He’s unrestricted at the end of the year, likely not to re-sign there, can win hockey games, can play the puck and I think he would be a good fit for Toronto. A guy like Chris Mason in Winnipeg, a veteran guy who’s been down the stretch and helped get the Blues in the playoffs a couple of years ago, he’s a great teammate. He would be a stabilizing force for those young goaltenders.”
