- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: The Kings are expected to announce the hiring of new head coach Darryl Sutter sometime today. He’s expected to make his Kings coaching debut on Thursday against the Ducks.
- Kevin Allen via twitter: The Canadiens CEO Molson said that the “ability to express himself in both French and English” will be “very” important when they are looking to pick their next head coach.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu will be an UFA at the end of the season, and is trying to ignore the trade rumors. “I just live my life day by day,” he said, smiling again. “I don’t think I’m the only player with my name out there.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Flyers have made plenty of trades with the Hurricanes in the past, so they could target Bryan Allen or Tim Gleason. The Oilers could use a puck moving defenseman. The Oilers could move Ales Hemsky at the deadline if they decide not to re-sign him. They could get a prospect defenseman and a draft pick. Matheson wouldn’t be surprised if the Oilers were looking at Slava Voynov of the Kings.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Nikita Filatov has signed with CSKA for the remainder of the season. Will play his first game on Thursday.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle said he’s been playing with a broken foot since Nov. 10th. “My game is skating and I was definitely a step behind for many of those games and a little slower out there. I didn’t have the energy to get into every play,” he said. “It’s a factor. I don’t want to sit here and make excuses.”
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets center Bryan Little blocked a shot off his foot on Saturday and his day-to-day. They will see today if he is able to go. Antti Miettinen skated with Tanner Glass and Jim Slater and should get into to his first Jets game.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen has missed 9 games with a groin injury, but is targeting to return after Christmas. “First I have to have a couple more days just with the goalie coach,” Lehtonen said. “Then I need to start skating with the team and have a couple of those days, and then after that, we’ll see when I play. We haven’t talked about any dates, but probably sometime around Christmas.”
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: A source has said that Flyers forward Sean Couturier is only sore, and not concussed after taking a Kimmo Timonen shot off the head.
- Anthony San Filppo via twitter: Flyers center Claude Giroux practiced without a no contact jersey. San Filippo thinks we’ll be back this week.
- Dan Murphy via twitter: Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome will be out 3-4 weeks with a broken thumb.
- Tony Ambrogio via twitter: Maple Leafs winger Colby Armstrong is out with a concussion that he suffered on Saturday after a collision with Ryan Kesler.
- Brent Wallace via twitter: Senators Milan Michalek is still listed as day-to-day. It is possible that he skates today, but not definite. Ian Mendes via twitter: Filip Kuba and Sergei Gonchar are both expected to play tonight against the Sabres.
- Josh Yohe via twitter: Penguins Jordan Staal and Craig Adams are day-to-day but will skate today.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: Rangers defenseman Marc Staal on contact drills: “Close, in a few days if everything goes well.”
- Katie Strang via twitter: Rangers Steve Eminger is out 8 weeks. Jeff Woywitka is questionable for tonight. Tim Erixon will be recalled as insurance.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: There were 15 scouts from 15 teams at the Maple Leafs-Kings game last night.

Due to front-loading contracts (back-loaded in some cases), and teams having to deal with the salary cap, a players cap number takes precedence over their actual salary. Drew Doughty for sure, and possibly Luke Schenn could be added to this list once they sign.

- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards skated on his own yesterday in Dallas, and could practice with the team on Wednesday at the morning skate. Nicklas Grossman is still out with a hip injury, but is skating.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers currently have $32 million committed to 14 players next year, leaving around $27 million for 11 more players. They still need to re-sign Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid, but will still have lots of room for other free agents. They won’t go after high end free agents like Brad Richards but could look at the 2nd tier group, the Scottie Upshall type. They could be looking for a 2-way defenseman. They won’t spend to the cap ceiling, likely closer to the middle.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: John Tavares has heard rumors that he wants out of the Island, but that may not be the case. “I was aware of (the talk) and, a lot of times, I just ignore that stuff,” …“Obviously, when you are losing, it’s not easy,” Tavares said. “It’s a tough thing to go through. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love it here and don’t want to play here. “I love being a New York Islander.”
- Josh Yole of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins forward Aaron Asham has been symptom free from a concussion he sustained on Feb. 1st. He skated before practice yesterday, and may be able to return later this month. Brooks Orpik will be out another 2 weeks. Eric Godard is eligible to return after serving his 10 game suspension.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle won’t be in the lineup tonight. Jason Demers had been taking Boyle’s spot on the power play, but Ian White was practicing with the unit yesterday. Devin Setoguchi was on the 1st PP unit with Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. Dany Heatley skated with Logan Couture and Ryane Clowe on the 2nd PP unit.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Bruins defenseman Steven Kamfer sustained a minor concussion last week, they hoped that he’ll only miss a week, but it’s likely to be more than that. In 2008, Kamfer was attached by a Michigan Wolverine running back and suffered a suffered a cracked skull, concussion and broken vertebrae. 3 months later he was knocked out by a punch from behind, then cross checked twice in the neck. Andrew Ference might be able to starting skating today or tomorrow.
- Edmonton Journal: Devan Dubnyk will start in net for the Oilers tonight, and Nikolai Khabibulin will likely get the start on Wedmesday.

- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika on Brad Richards,
I think you’re right in a lot of ways. I think what he would like to know is what level of commitment to winning will come from the new ownership. He wants a team committed to chasing a Stanley Cup and paying the money it takes to get that done. He does not want to be on a team where getting out of the first round of the playoffs is seen as a huge accomplishment. And, if you look at the past five or six seasons, that’s what the Stars are right now. If an owner is in place and states he wants to spend money and try to win now, then I think Richards is in. If a new owner talks about budgets and setting a low payroll in hopes of business success, I think he is out.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said he spoke briefly to Kaberle’s agent the day after they traded for him, and they agreed to not to talk about an extension till after the season. “It was in a very postive light,’’ said Chiarelli, “and I am very optimistic.’’ Dupont thinks it would be a 3 or 4 year deal in the $4-4.5 million range.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Mirtle thinks at this moment that the Maple Leafs and Clarke MacArthur will eventually get a deal done for the RFA, likely at the 11th hour, and closer to Burke’s number than agent’s Don Meehan’s.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Duncan Keith has a $5.5 million salary cap hit, Brent Seabrook is at $5.8 million. Shea Weber’s should be in the same ballpark.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Alexander Radulov said “never say never” about a North American return, and added, “From time to time I get offers [from the NHL], but they’re more like hints. B/c it’s pointless now that I’m under contract.”
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators have had preliminary discussions with Craig Anderson who will be a UFA at the end of the season. Serious negotiations likely won’t start till later in the season when the Sens have a better idea of what they have in Anderson.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Marc Staal and Ruslan Fedotenko remain out of the lineup for the Rangers.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Jonas Hiller is still experiencing vertigo symptoms and he didn’t make it through the entire practice yesterday.
“It’s still not the way I want to,” he said. “I still have the symptoms and I still don’t feel right. It still feels like I’ve got something slowing me down and it seems like I’m always behind the play. It doesn’t hurt or anything, but it’s definitely not a nice feeling.”
Hiller didn’t consider it a setback but said that “it’s definitely (taking) longer than I thought and longer than I wanted to.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle on his injury that kept him out of last night’s game, “You know I can’t discuss what it is, but obviously I’m not going,” Ian White wouldn’t mind re-signing with the Sharks, “Without question,” White said. “How could you not want to play on one of the top teams every year and have a good shot at winning?”

Jeff Marek via twitter: Joe Thornton was named the captain of the San Jose Sharks. From the Sharks twitter account, Dan Boyle will be a full-time alternate captain, Patrick Marleau and Ryane Clowe will be the others, one at home, one on the road.
Jimmy Murphy via twitter: The Boston Bruins and Brian McGrattan have a agreed on a 2-way deal, but it won’t be announced till Monday.
David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Current (yesterday report) top 3 lines for the Sharks to start the season. Marleau – Couture – Heatley, McGinn – Thornton – Setoguchi, Clowe – Pavelski – Mitchell.
Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Atlanta Thrashers will start the season without a captain, choosing to go with 3 alternates, Nik Antropov, Andrew Ladd and Johnny Oduya. They will rotate some others in throughout the season. The Thrashers also haven’t named a starting goalie for Friday’s season opener, but Ramsey offered this …
“I think one of the goalies will play more,” Ramsay said. “That would not be unreasonable. I’ve been with teams that have been 50-50 [splits], and we won a Vezina [Trophy] with it. I don’t think that really works. It can. I’ve seen it. We definitely are going to play each night with a plan in our minds of making this young player be a star. I think he can be.
“I don’t look that far ahead. Whatever happens we will deal with it. You make too many plans in this game, and suddenly you lose three guys and everything is blown out the door and you have to start again.”

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: LeBrun talked to Ducks GM Bob Murray about the rumors that he might be trading restricted free agent Bobby Ryan. “Unequivocally, I’m not trading him,” Murray told ESPN.com on Friday. “My plan is to get him signed.”
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Everson was told that Sheldon Souray might have put the New Jersey Devils on his list of teams he’d consider a trade too.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater thinks the Avalanche should trade Sheldon Souray for John-Michael Liles, straight up. I sure the Oilers could get more Souray than just Liles.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: There is a chance that the Sharks will be without Dan Boyle and Marc-Edouard Vlasic for tonight’s game. Both will be a game time decision.
- Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Coyotes winger Scottie Upshall left Thursday’s game with a ‘lower-body’ injury. The extent of the injury is not known yet. If it’s serious, they might have to look elsewhere for help. “Number 1, we’re just waiting to see if this is something significant, long term, then we probably have to dial up our search for another offensive player,” Maloney said.
- Aaron Portzline and Tom Reed: The Blue Jackets are 9 points out of the last playoff spot, and will most likely be sellers at the trade deadline. Raffi Torres and Milan Jurcina have been mentioned in the past, but you can add Freddie Modin to that list. Modin hasn’t been asked to waive his no-trade clause yet.

- Globe Sports Podcast: A 1/2 hour podcast talking about the ‘Hockey Summit’ and the NHL’s participation in the Olympics. They also talk about Dion Phaneuf, Ilya Kovalchuk, and other things happening on the trade front. Trade talk starts around the 10 minute mark.
- Ken Campbell and Adam Proteau of The Hockey News: The Tampa Bay Lightning ownership was been a mess for awhile, and there have been reports that the NHL covered their last payroll. But some better news may be on the way, as the NHL might have found a new owner in Boston based financier, Jeffery Vinik. The team, and 5 acres of land beside the arena are being sold for an estimated $170 million. It is also rumored that if Vinik gets the team he’ll want to trim payroll, and will be asking Vincent Lecavalier to waive his no-trade clause.
- TSN.ca: The Penguins or Senators could be a great fit for Ray Whitney. Other clubs that might be interested are Buffalo, Boston, New Jersey, Vancouver and Los Angeles.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Mike Modano was asked on a recent road trip if he’d consider moving to a Stanley Cup contender in what could be his last season, he said he’d prefer to finish his career with the Stars.
- Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is fine with Jamal Mayers and Garnet Exelby asking for trade. They approached him privately and in a professional manner.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Dan Boyle missed his 3rd straight game with an upper-body injury, and is day-to-day. He’ll see how it feels before Saturday’s game, and if it’s a no go, he’ll try again on Tuesday.
- Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune: Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom is day-to-day with a stiff back. He missed last nights game, and will be re-evaluated before their next game.
Bertuzzi to the Red Wings? Marleau loses Captaincy

According to MLive.com, the Detroit Red Wings are close to signing free agent winger Todd Bertuzzi. The deal is reportedly worth $1.5 million for 1 year. This would be Bertuzzi’s second stint with the Wings; playing 8 regular season games in 2006-07 after a trade from Florida. The 34 year old winger recorded 44 points in 66 games last season for Calgary. Detroit is looking to replace some offense after losing Marian Hossa, Mikael Samuelsson, Tomas Kopecky, and Jiri Hudler.
Patrick Marleau, who has been mentioned in trade rumors for the last couple years, has had his captaincy removed. Dan Boyle might be a candidate to take over as the captain.
