- Tim Sassone of the Dailly Herald: Patrick Kane will get into his first pre-season game tonight. He’ll be centering Marian Hossa and Andrew Brunette. Patrick Sharp skated on his own for the 3rd straight day yesterday. “He’s progressing well,” Joel Quenneville said. “We’re very happy with where he’s at. Each and every day he’s able to do a little bit more. We’re very encouraged.” The Blackhawks camp roster is now at 31.
- Debora Van Brenk of the Toronto Sun: London Police think they have a name of a person who they think may have tossed the banana at Wayne Simmonds last week. They haven’t arrested anyone, which was being reported by some. Police should release more details today. A banana was tossed towards the ice earlier in the game but it didn’t make it to the ice.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Wayne Simmonds won’t be disciplined for his alleged homophobic slur towards Sean Avery as the NHL couldn’t substantiate what was said on the ice.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau is still tinkering with lines, especially when it comes to Brooks Laich, whether he’ll be on the wing or at center. “As it stands right now we’re still up in the air, whether would it be center or wing with him,” Boudreau said. “We just want to get him in a couple more games at both positions for him to feel comfortable at either one, to start taking more faceoffs in case it was center that he’s playing.”
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Recently signed Chris Campoli found himself partnered with Josh Gorges. Hal Gill and P.K. Subban round out the other top 4 while Andrei Markov is out. Markov is still rehabbing and it’s unlikely he’ll be able to go for the opener.
- Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis will get into his 1st game since Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final tonight. Canucks forward Manny Malhotra will get into the game as well, his first since his offseason eye procedure. Defenseman Aaron Rome will miss 4 to 6 weeks with a broken finger. Nolan Baumgartner will be out 4 weeks with a broken foot. Steve Pinizzotto is out indefinitely with a dislocated shoulder.
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Carchidi thinks that salary cap constraints may hurt Sean Couturier’s chances of making the Flyers.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen had a minor knee procedure and will miss at least the first couple game of the season. Jose Theodore is the teams starter, and they may keep Tyler Plante over Jacob Markstrom. They want Markstrom to get a lot of playing time in the NHL.
- John Down of the Calgary Herald: Steve Staios is on a tryout with the Islanders and hopes to get a contract. He’s 64 games shy of 1,000.

- Matthew Sekers of the Globe and Mail: Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler will return to the line for the last regular season game on Saturday. He had back surgery and has been out of the lineup since Jan. 26th. The Canucks will also only have 17 skates, 1 forward short, as they are close to the cap. Dan Hamhuis skated with teammates yesterday and hopes to play on Saturday as well, he’s been out with a concussion. Andrew Alberts won’t be ready until next week as his wrist is still bothering him.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Dan Hamhuis is looking to play Saturday and he wasn’t considering retirement, “I had a bit of a scare, but thankfully the symptoms cleared up very quickly,” Hamhuis said. “It was diagnosed as a very mild concussion. It was very positive. “I was happy the way things cleared up very quickly. I have really been symptom-free since the first day.”
- James Gordon of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators owner Eugene Melnyk will meet with GM Bryan Murray today. They might talk about a contract extension, but did say that Cory Clouston’s future as head coach would be in the hands of the next GM. Melnyk on Murray, “look, we get along, so it’s only a question of seeing whether we think he’s the right man for the position over the next several years and whether we can come together, and walk down the aisle together.” On Clouston he added, “That would really be involving the next GM, whoever that may be, that’s a hockey ops decision and I’m going to keep it that way.”
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild winger Andrew Brunette will be 38 next August, and is a UFA after this season, one of six for the Wild. He hasn’t had any contract talks, and realizes his time with the Wild could be over. “There will be a decision somewhere down the line if it’s back here or somewhere else or who knows, right?” Brunette said. “It’s played on my mind, I’m not going to lie to you, the last little bit. I’m trying not to really dig deep into that.”
- Brian Wilde of CTV Montreal: Wilde thinks Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier would lock Carey Price and PK Subban up long term, 7 years at least. The team has some good players in place with Cammalleri, Gionta, Eller, Pouliot, and Plekanec. The Canadiens have some holes to fill, especially on the blueline. They need a ‘big horse’ that can clear bodies and play with some anger. They also need to bring in a true big number 1 centerman.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes winger Erik Cole (25 goals so far) will be a UFA after the season. GM Jim Rutherford said the sides will talk contract extension after the season and added “has a very good future here and it will be one of our priorities.”

- Randy Youngman of the OC Register: In 2003-04, the Anaheim Ducks almost traded Corey Perry to the Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks were prepared to send Perry and a 2004 1st round pick to the Oilers for center Mike Comrie. Comrie was holding out, and the Oilers were wanting Comrie to repay $2.5 million of his original signing bonus. When he didn’t repay the signing bonus, the deal fell through, and he was later traded to Philly. The Ducks used the 2004 1st round pick to select Ladislav Smid.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman Roman Hamrlik, a UFA at season’s end, hinted that it could be his last year in a Canadiens uniform. After the media named him the “Jacques Beauchamp Trophy” winner (goes to the unsung hero), “I’ve been doing this a long and especially (since) this is my last year, it’s an honour.” … “I know I’ve been playing with lots of good players this season. You guys had a choice and it’s a big honour for me.” P.K. Subban and Jaroslav Spacek are the only defenseman under contract for next year. Hamrlik, Andrei Markov, James Wisniewski, Hal Gill, Brent Sopel and Paul Mara are all UFA’s.
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Quote of the Year: Jaroslav Spacek on how he knew his March 4th knee surgery was a success, “I woke up with two knees and no big boobs.”A decision if he’ll play tonight won’t be made until a couple hours before the game.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe left last night’s game after 3 shifts with what coach Todd McLellan called a lower body tweak after the game. He was being evaluated after the game and more could be known today.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green and Tom Poti didn’t travel with the team to Toronto for tonight’s game. Green took part in full practice yesterday but didn’t take any contact. He hasn’t ruled out getting into a game before the playoffs start. Alex Semin had a maintenance day yesterday to help heal some nagging injuries. Boudreau said there is a “chance” he could miss 1 of the team’s 3 remaining games.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: Taylor Hall was asked to join Team Canada for the World Championships, but won’t be good enough shape to go. Sense around New Jersey is that they will do all they can to re-sign Zach Parise, but will he want to stay?
- AP on NHL.com: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller took some shots yesterday at practice. He still thinks he’s day-to-day and hopes to play on Saturday against the Blue Jackets. Jhonas Enroth will start tonight against the Lightning.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Rangers forward Chris Drury is hoping to get back in the lineup for the playoffs.
- Renaud Lavoie via twitter: Vincent Lecavalier said he will have no choice and will wear a visor when he returns. He may continue to wear it next year if he can adjust to it. TB Lightning via twitter: There was no structural damage to Lecavalier’s eye, and he’ll be a game time decision today.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Wild GM Chuck Fletcher said that Martin Havlat is doubtful to play in the final 3 games, as he has an upper body injury.
- Chris Vivalmore via twitter: Thrashers defenseman Tobias Enstrom won’t travel with the team to Nashville and New York.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Senators winger Daniel Alfredsson and defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Erik Karlsson are all done for the season.
- Ben Kuzman via twitter: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis (out with a concussion) skated on his own yesterday.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: It’s sounding like Oilers center Shawn Horcoff is done for the year after having a setback last week.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs will have about $15 million in salary cap space next season after they re-sign RFA’s Tyler Bozak, Clarke MacArthur, James Reimer, and Luke Schenn. The Leafs are more than one player away, so spending a lot money on Brad Richards may not be the right move. It’s unlikely the Leafs will trade some of their young talent for expensive veterans. If Richards (31) is looking for a 3 year deal, he might be a fit for the Leafs, but he’ll be looking for longer term. Paul Stastny, if made available, could be a player the Leafs would be interested in. Cox wonders if Burke could try to package his 2 1st round picks and a Kulemin or Gunnarson to move up in the draft and grab a top prospect (top 4), but that would tough.

- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Anze Kopitar will have surgery on his ankle/leg on Wednesday and is likely done for the year, even if they go deep in the playoffs. There was torn ligaments caused by the ankle sprain.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis could be out a week or longer after suffering his 2nd concussion of the year, 4th in his career. He was able to fly with the team to Nashville, watch practice, and planned on going out for dinner with former teammates. Things he may not have been able to do if his symptoms were bad. Mikael Samuelsson won’t play tonight but is possible for Thursday. Alex Edler and Andrew Alberts are expected to skate on Thursday as they begin to get ready for a playoff return. Tanner Glass is day-to-day with a rib injury.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green skated in full pads for 25 minutes yesterday, but still hasn’t had a full skate with teammates. He’s feeling better but still experiencing some symptoms, and hopes to practice in a week.
“Here and there, but nothing that’s progressing to get worse — it’s always getting better,” Green said. “We’ve done a great job here with the trainers and the staff of taking the right procedures for me to get better. The unfortunate part is that it does take time. It’s nice to get a good skate and hopefully now I can get back on the ice and back playing with the team.”
“I think it would be good” to get several practices in first, Green said. “I think it’s going to take some time to get back in shape. I haven’t skated for a long time. I’ll skate by myself here and hopefully get some practices in with the team and get comfortable again. I don’t want to rush into the game too much. I haven’t played for a while. I want to be in the best shape possible here going into the playoffs.”
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Jason Arnott took part in full practice yesterday. He’s missed the last 6 games with a lower-body injury. “After a day off, it’s a little rough, but not too bad,” Arnott said, before addressing whether he would be able to play on Tuesday against Carolina. “We’ll see how it responds today and go out in the morning skate tomorrow and then we’ll see.” A end of the week return may be the most likely “I think so. We got some good skates while the team [was] gone. We’ll just have to see how it goes.”
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Francis thinks that Curtis Glencross could triple his $1.2 million salary on the open market this year. He now has 23 goals while bringing toughness and has penalty killing ability. Calgary may not be able to afford him now, especially with Daymond Langkow and his $4.5 million salary have received clearance to return. Langkow’s return may also force out Brendan Morrison as he’ll be looking for a raise on his $725,000 salary.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Jordan Leopold’s appointment with a hand specialist was postponed because he came down with the flu. Leopold broke his hand on Friday, and if he’ll be able to return for the playoffs could depend on if he needs surgery or not.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: The Blackhawks will finalize a deal with prospect Jimmy Hayes today.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Jonathan Quick will start in goal for the Kings on Thursday.

- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis suffered his 2nd concussion of the season (4th of his career) in the 1st period last night. Video of injury at bottom of entry.”If there is more (concussions) to come, I think you have to take a look at what is important,” … “If I ever felt like it’s like putting myself at risk long term, then I’ll have to step back and think about things.”
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Patrick Sharp’s knee injury is healing well according to coach Joel Quenneville. “I won’t say exactly when he’s hitting the ice, but he’s making some rapid progress here,” Quenneville said. “We’re really pleased and encouraged he’s been able to ratchet up his off-ice training and conditioning as well. I don’t have a number of days when he can get back on the ice, but we’re happy with his progress.”
- Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Canucks backup goalie, Cory Schneider has one left on his current contract, and there is speculation that the Canucks could move him this summer rather than loss him as a free agent.
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: Michael Ryder was a healthy scratch again for the Bruins last night, his 2nd scratch since the end of February. He only has 2 assists in his last 11 games. ESPN reported on the weekend that an unnamed source said that Marc Savard was had “real memory problems and he’s quite worried about it.” Conroy emailed Savard’s agent who said it was “not inaccurate.”
- Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: Tomas Vokoun left last night’s game at the end of regulation with back spasms, Scott Clemmesen started the OT.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: As he reported earlier, the Blues ownership group values the franchise close to $200 million.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Contract talks between the Devils and Zach Parise won’t begin until after the season. Alex Ovechkin and Jason Arnott should be back this week. The Canadiens and Andei Markov will wait until after the season to talk contract. LeBrun would be surprised if Islanders coach Jack Capuano isn’t back next year. The Predators and Shea Weber will also wait until after the season to talk contract. Joe Sakic took a front-office job with the Avalanche and may follow the same path as Steve Yzerman did before landing a GM job.

- Corey Masisak of NHL.com: If Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller doesn’t return soon and they continue to have trouble keeping the puck out of the net (21 goals in 3 games), GM Bob Murray may have to make a deal.
“Making deals is really hard,” Murray said. “If it comes to that point where I think Jonas is really going to be a while, we may have to say, ‘OK’. Not at this point.”
Panthers assistant GM Mike Santos,
“We’re going to make trades to improve the team in the future regardless of where we are in the playoff race,” Santos told the Sun-Sentinel. “This is a long-term project. There’s 10 years of mismanagement that we’re trying to turn around, hopefully in three or four years.”
- Eric Stephens via twitter: Jonas Hiller worked out off ice today and only would say, “not going the way I’d like them to.”
- Andrew Gross of The Record: Marian Gaborik will be out an indefinite period with a concussion. Gaborik did not make the trip with the team. He must pass the baseline test before he’s able to return.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Blue goalie Jaroslav Halak is expected to remain on the IR through Friday, further update may be given today by the team. David Perron will be traveling with the team to Vancouver where he’ll see a specialist.
- Dave Stubbs of Habs Inside/Out: Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin wouldn’t confirm reports that defenseman Jaroslav Spacek is done for the season. He continues to get treatment in Montreal.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Panthers are working the phones but nothing so far… They won’t deal Stephen Weiss unless they get an offer they can’t refuse.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Maple Leafs thought they were closer to acquiring defenseman over the weekend, but nothing imminent.

Rumors involving the Kings, Senators, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Hurricanes … and some injury notes

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The LA Kings are intrigued by Oilers forward Ales Hemsky. The Oilers are listening to offers but are not desperate to trade him. The Kings hope more teams fall out of the playoff race, increasing the amount of talent that might be available. Money is once again an issue for the Dallas Stars at the deadline, as it’s unknown if the lenders will give them the go ahead to add some help, they have struggled of late and are dropping in the standings. If they continue to drop in the standings and are on the playoff bubble, they make look for Brad Richards packages. As of yesterday, Senators GM Murray still hadn’t heard what Chris Phillips was thinking regarding waiving his no-trade. Sharks aren’t saying much about what they are planning on doing, have been looking for a top 4 defenseman in the past. Seabrook rumors were a “total fabrication.”
- Helene Elliott via twitter: The LA Kings are still looking for a high-end forward. They were not in the late discussions with Ottawa for Mike Fisher.
- Adam Jahns via twitter: Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman, “We’re trying to find a defenseman that can be a penalty-killing type and eat up some minutes on the PK.”
- Darren Dreger of TSN: If the Red Wings continue to struggle defensively in the next 2 weeks, GM Ken Holland may look to make a deal. Though the Hurricanes would need a defenseman as part of the deal, they could consider trading Joe Corvo, Joni Pitkanen or Ian White.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: McGuire (I’m guessing Pierre) on Sheldon Souray, “There’s some talk about Montreal for Sheldon.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: UFA’s Chris Phillips and Jarkko Ruutu are as good as gone by the trade deadline. The Senators are also getting some interest in Filip Kuba, Chris Kelly, and Chris Neil. Garrioch doesn’t think anyone will want Alex Kovalev. The Canadiens, Bruins, Sharks and Ducks are looking for defenseman and could be interested in Phillips. Chris Campoli may be a good fit in Anaheim, a UFA at season’s end. If they dealt Phillips to Montreal, they may want Max Pacioretty in the deal.
- Ian Walker via twitter: Dan Hamhuis is out indefinitely with a concussion.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Jonas Gustavsson will be out at least a week after he underwent a heart ablation procedure yesterday (his 3rd since the beginning of last year).
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: JS Giguere will start in net for the Maple Leafs tonight against the Canadiens. Giguere met with GM Brian Burke to discuss if they’ll look to trade him or not. He’d like to remain with the Leafs but would want to play if he does. “Hopefully I can give them a reason to keep me. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t even know if there’s a trade market for me anywhere. I still make a lot of money, so it’s something that can be tricky. I haven’t asked – anyway, I’m going to stop there.”
- Chris Vivlamore via twitter: Teams scouting the Thrashers-Rangers games last night were the Flyers, Red Wings and Canadiens. Steve Zipay adds the the Bruins were also there.

- Arthur Staple of Newsday: Sources are saying Burke wants at least 3 pieces for Tomas Kaberle: a current NHLer, a prospect, and a possibly a 1st round pick. It’s doubtful the NY Rangers would give up that much. Evgeny Grachev and Dale Weise would be involved, but the Rangers aren’t giving up a 1st round pick for a rental. The Leafs may also move JS Giguere and Kris Versteeg.
- Joshua Cooper via twitter: Scouts in Nashville last night were from Tampa, Vancouver, Phoenix, Anaheim, and double Toronto.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: The Ducks will either waive or trade a defenseman or 2 within 24-48 hours, Mara and Brookbank are possibilities. They currently have 9 defenseman on their roster.
- James Mirtle via twitter: The addition of Joffery Lupul could make Kris Versteeg expendable. Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Chesnokov thinks the Thrashers have been scouting Versteeg for awhile.
- James Mirtle via twitter: As of right now it looks like Tomas Kaberle could walk for nothing on July 1st.
- Howard Berger via twitter: Expect the Leafs to pull off at least 2 more trades by the deadline.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Martin Brodeur, out with a sprained right knee, won’t be in Toronto tonight, and likely out tomorrow vs. the Sharks.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche expect Peter Forsberg to have is visa paper in order in time for at least one game this weekend, they play Friday and Saturday night. Kyle Cumiskey suffered a head injury last night and didn’t return to the game. Cumiskey has missed most of the season with a concussion. Adan Foote is listed as day-to-day with a foot injury.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis had his face bounce off the glass from a Ryan Getzlaf hit. He laid on the ice for several minutes before skating off. Asked if he’ll be out Saturday, Vigneault said: “Right now, I can’t tell you. I saw him after the game and he was fine.” Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Ryan Getzlaf won’t be suspended for the hit. - Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Lou Lamoriello will evaluate the New Jersey Devils after the 20 games mark, they’ve played 18 games so far. Firing MacLean is an option, or MacLean and assistant coach Larry Robinson switching roles. Some of the Devils struggles is due to the fact that 6 of their starting 18 players are injured.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Murphy was told that the Scott Gordon firing order came down from Charles Wang, GM Garth Snow reluctantly fired him.
- Eric Engels of CTV.ca: If Andrei Markov is placed on the LTIR, the Canadiens could use his pro-rated $5.75 million to bring in a “star-calibre” player or a couple “good” players. - Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars are facing hurdles in trying to re-sign Brad Richards. The team is still looking for new owners and are controlled by the lenders. Heika doesn’t think the Stars want to go past 5 years. The Stars have back-loaded some contract to keep this payroll lower this year in hopes of attracting a new owner. If they have to stay on the $45 million self imposed cap next season, it will be difficult to keep Richards.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Keith Ballard will be back in the lineup when the Canucks face the Penguins. Dan Hamhuis didn’t practice yesterday but hopes to play. Andrew Alberts could be a healthy scratch.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: Marty Turco will be in the net for the Blackhawks tonight.
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Matt Stajan started both games over the weekend on the 4th line, though he eventually was moved up. He has only 1 goal in his last 32 games, though he has 10 points in 14 games this season.
- Mark Whicker of the OC Register: Cam Fowler has switched his number to #4 from #54.

- James Mirtle via twitter: JS Giguere will start tonight. Korbinian Holzer remains in the lineup, Christian Hansen and Carl Gunnarson are out. Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Dan Ellis is starting for the Lightning tonight.
- CP in the Hockey News: Dan Hamhuis will be in the lineup for the Canucks, Keith Ballard will be a healthy scratch.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Johan Hedberg has been told he’ll be starting on Wednesday. Brodeur was holding out hope. Brian Rolston practiced today and could return on Wednesday.
- Adam Proteau via twitter: Proteau thinks that Brooks Laich would be a bigger loss to the Washington Capitals than Alexander Semin.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Steven Stamkos’s agent, Don Meehan, is expected to meet with Lightning GM Steve Yzerman today to discuss contract extension. The Nashville Predators continue to talk with Don Meehan about a contract extension for Shea Weber. Former Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut is still trying to get an arena built to bring the Nordiques back Quebec City. The Red Wings haven’t begun contract talks with soon to be UFA goalie, Jimmy Howard.
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: The LA Kings have lost Willie Mitchell for 4-6 weeks with a fractured wrist (we noted yesterday that initial x-rays didn’t detect the fracture, an MRI was done yesterday). Alexei Ponikarovsky will be out 4 weeks with a broken finger.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers have signed the 22-year old Claude Giroux to a 3 year contract extension. He’ll have cap hit of $3.75 million, earning $2.75 million in 2011-12, $3.5 million in 2012-13, and $5 million in 2013-14. GM Paul Holmgren is also working on signing Jeff Carter and Ville Leino. Bob McKenzie via twitter: Now that Claude Giroux is looked up for the next 3 years, look for the Flyers to try to sign Jeff Carter to a long-term extension.
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Tampa Bay Lightning left winger Simon Gagne continues to be out with a strained neck (a concussion has been ruled out). He hasn’t been cleared for skating yet, has been riding a stationary bike.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto media continues to bring up Ron Wilson’s firing again as the team has 1 regulation win in the last 9 games.
“I don’t even talk to Brian (Burke) about stuff like this,” he said. “It suddenly switched from Lindy Ruff to me overnight and it’s always coming out of Toronto. There is some coach in the league that we’re talking about and I get asked not just about my own situation, but every other coach who is losing a couple of games and it always seems to come out of Toronto, not from the city where the coach is struggling a little bit.”
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Colorado Avalanche injury update. Craig Anderson skated but is still a week or two away from returning. Adam Foote skated but is still out indefinetly. Kyle Cumiskey is also out indefinitely, while Ryan Wilson is out another week.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers have fired their AHL (Adirondack Phantoms) coach Greg Gilbert. The Phantoms are 2-10-1 and losers of 9 straight. Last week they sent their leading scorer Pat Maroon home. He could be traded or loaned to another team today when Holmgren meets with other GM’s at the general managers meetings, with a team source saying the Lightning could be the leading candidate.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Rumors have surfaced that the Montreal Canadiens are clearing cap space, with the possibility of signing Bill Guerin. Guerin hasn’t heard from GM Pierre Gauthier at all. News on what Guerin plans on doing appears to still be weeks away. If he were to sign somewhere, it would still take a couple weeks to get in game shape. Guerin is also talking to MSG and VS regarding some TV work.
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: David Krejci never lost consciousness when he suffered his “moderate” concussion, he’ll be reevaluated today, and will take an exertion test later this week. Krejci will likely be out 10-14 days.
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres all-star goalie Ryan Miller returned to practice yesterday and should be back either Wednesday or Thursday, with Thursday being more likely according to coach Ruff. Craig Rivet is battling the flu. Nathan Gerbe took part in no-contact drills as he recovers from a broken jaw.
- Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: The Vancouver Canucks are expected to get defenseman Dan Hamhuis back tonight after missing the last 8 games with a foot injury. Keith Ballard recently returned from a concussion but has been relatively ineffective. Andrew Alberts and Aaron Rome have filled in well. Sami Salo is recovering ahead of schedule so far, and could return to the lineup next month. Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: MacIntyre thinks that if Hamhuis returns, Ballard should sit over Rome.
