- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Francis laughs at the rumor that Daniel Alfredsson could interest the Flames at some point. The Flames do have an interest in Coyotes holdout Kyle Turris. A source close to the situation has said that the Flames are one of six teams to make a ‘significant’ offer. Coyotes GM Don Maloney is still saying he doesn’t have plans to trade him. Rene Bourque is also front and center in trade rumors lately. Flames GM Jay Feaster continues to tell other GMs that Mark Giordano is not available. Francis doesn’t see the Flames trading Jarome Iginla. Ollie Jokinen wants to re-sign with the Flames. Tim Jackman and Tom Kostopoulos are UFAs and could draw minor interest at some point. David Moss won’t be traded unless he wants out. They would love to move Matt Stajan and his $3.5 million salary in a package, but it’s unlikely that there is anyone else on their roster to draw that much interest.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: The Blue Jackets are having issues on and off the ice. There are reports that they are losing $25 million a season, and there is talk about the long-term survival of the franchise. Their last few home games have only drawn 9,000 fans.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Two high profile GMs have said they’d like to see more players starting next season.
“Visors should be mandatory for all defencemen, at the least,” Burke said, adding that blueliners are at “a far greater risk” of being hit in the face by a puck because of all the deflections in front of the net.
“I’d want to hear the GMs out on the larger topic [of everyone having to wear them], but I think I would support Homer.”
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets won’t be pulling off any blockbuster deals because the team is off to a slow start. They may pull off some smaller deals along the way, but finding a trade partner who isn’t trying to fleece is hard to find. Most teams aren’t looking to get rid of 30 goal scorers and many teams would like to upgrade their blueline.
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty was wearing a no-contact jersey again at practice yesterday. When asked yesterday when Doughty will see the doctor next, Murray said, “The opportunity will probably be tonight, to see the doctor at the rink. We plan on taking him with us on the road trip, kind of shooting for the end of the week here as a possibility.”
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman confirmed that they will be keeping Brett Connolly and won’t be sending him back to junior.
- Shaun Starr via twitter: Canadiens Max Pacioretty has a partially torn ligament in his wrist. Starr has been told surgery is unlikely. Renaud Lavoie via twitter: It’s a partial tear, no breaks, deep bruise. He could be back in the lineup this week.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Oilers coach Tom Renny says that Ryan Whitney has a sprained knee but it’s not significant. A few days and he should be fine.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild forward Guilaume Latendresse is bothered by a wonky groin again, and look for the Wild to be cautious with him. Dany Heatley and Greg Zanon are also bothered by groin issues. Brett Bulmer will play in his 9th game on Thursday and likely won’t be returned to junior.
- Luke DeCock via twitter: Scouts in Carolina last night were the Blue Jackets, Flyers and Penguins. The Canes play the Flyers and Pens in the next 3 weeks. They don’t play the Blue Jackets.

- Katie Carrera via twitter: Capitals defenseman Mike Green has his right foot wrapped and is walking with a significant limp. When asked if he’ll play on Thusday he said, “We’ll see.”

- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators Shea Weber was fined $2500 by the NHL for his boarding hit on the Canucks Jannik Hansen.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch wonders if the Senators will trade Daniel Alfredsson before the trade deadline. Alfie has a $1 million salary but a $4.875 million cap hit. He signed a 35+ deal, so if he decides to retire, his cap hit would stay on the books. Alfredsson has a no-movement clause.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: Oilers coach Tom Renny hints that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins could sit tonight for Sam Gagner. He added that team may need to see what it’s like without RNH. Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson is baffled by the suggestion of sitting RNH. The Oilers didn’t sit Taylor Hall when he didn’t score for the first 8 games. RNH has 4 goals so far.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: There is “nothing new” when it comes Mark Staal and his concussion. Ryan McDonagh, Michael Del Zotto and Tim Erixon have stepped up there minutes, but are still learning the game. The Rangers may seriously look at adding a top 4 defenseman. The obvious place to look is Nashville with soon-to-be UFA Ryan Suter and RFA Shea Weber. The Preds would obviously ask about Del Zotto, Artem Anisimov, Brandon Dubinsky, Chris Kreider and Dylan McIlrath. Assuming that Erixon and Ryan Callahan are off limits.
- Craig Custance of ESPN: (Mailbag) The easiest way for the Devils to keep Zach Parise for the season is to be in the playoff race all season. If they were to consider moving him, it may take 2 NHL caliber players, a prospect and 1st round pick, same as what the Thrashers got for Kovalchuk. If the Flames don’t improve soon, Custance thinks they should make some moves to re-stock their system.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devils center Jacob Josefson suffered a broken right clavicle last night after crashing into the boads. The Devils are already without Travis Zajac until Christmas. Adam Henrique could be recalled, or Lou Lamoriello could make a trade for a center.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild center Mikko Koivu was cut on the chin by a skate on Thursday, is questionable for tonight’s game against the Canucks.
- Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets forward Andrew Ladd took a puck in the face that required 3 stitches above his nose, and 3 in it. It’s not known if he’ll be in the lineup tonight. Defenseman Ron Hainsey is likely out a week with a upper-body injury.
- The Fourth Period: Scott Hartnell is disappointed that his ice time has reduced. He’s aware of the trade rumors involving him. He has a no-trade clause.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: JP Dumont has a deal with Bern of the Swiss League. NHL teams have until Tuesday to sign him.
- Rich Chere via twitter: Johan Hedberg likely to start in net for the Devils against the Penguins.

- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: A charter plane carrying Lokomotiv of the KHL has crashed. Reports are that there were 37 people on board. The number of people that died is unconfirmed (reports saying 36 died). Former NHLers on the team include Vasyunov, Rachunek, Demitra, Salei, Skrastins. Brad McCrimmon was the teams head coach. A link to Lokomotiv’s roster or here if the site is down.. Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: “Officials of Russia Aviation confirm 34 dies in plane crash.”
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland considers himself lucky with the concussion he sustained last March. He missed the last 14 regular season games and the first 3 of the playoffs. He’ll be ready to go for training camp.
“It does get scary. If you look at Sidney Crosby right now, he’s still out. It’s never fun seeing another player out and a star player out of the lineup.
“It is scary how long these things can take. I remember I was sitting there with mine and you never knew when it was going to come out. I would have dinner with friends and it would be like they were talking to a wall.”
Chris Campoli still remains unsigned. The Ottawa Sun reported a while ago that 5 teams were interested. Jordan Hendry will be on a tryout with Minnesota.
- Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun said that Detroit offered him a deal similar to the one he received from the Capitals, 1 year at $1.5 million.
“Looking at Washington’s lineup compared to Detroit, they are comparable teams,” Vokoun said. “But Detroit in last 10 years won three times Stanley Cup. And Washington never won it. But that’s a lot better challenge for me and the team, to be able to do something special.”

“My belief is this team has a better chance to win than Detroit does. And they showed a lot more interest, so that was the key for me, too.”
- Katie Strang of Newsday: Alexei Yashin skated at the Islanders practice facility yesterday but it remains “unlikely” that he re-signs with the team.
- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson skated yesterday for 70 minutes, taking part in every drill and full scrimmage. Alfredsson only played in 54 games last year and had surgery this summer.

- Jason Botchford via twitter: Canucks GM Mike Gillis said that when he was with the Canucks, Rick Rypien’s issues were never alcohol or drug related and that he was even reluctant to take anything prescribed.
- Rob Brodie of OttawaSenators.com: Daniel Alfredsson skated yesterday for the 1st times since having back surgery in June.
“It felt good to be back on the ice today,” he said afterward. “I was on for maybe an hour, an hour and 20 (minutes), did some drills and played a little bit of a scrimmage. It was fun. I was tired, but everything held up well and the back felt fine.”
Alfredsson hasn’t played in a game since February 7th. He hopes to be ready for the start of training camp in September. He’ll be back out skating on Thursday.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Chesnokov spoke with Alexei Yashin’s agent and said there is nothing new to report on negotiations.
- James O’Brien of Pro Hockey Talk: Jonas Hiller hopes to be ready to the start of training camp.
“Of course I know I still have to get some ice-training and I have to work hard towards it. But that is something that you do every year. And for that I am here in Switzerland. This is what I’m working towards. And then, I believe, that I’m going to be ready come training camp and the season. And the All-Star game is certainly a goal again.”
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Antti Mietinen (Wild) has finally signed with AK Bars Kazan of the KHL.
- Tom Reed via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson likes to award contract extensions to players leading up to the season. Think Antoine Vermette, Derek Dorsett, and Steve Mason. (He mentions Rostislav Klesla, but he was traded to Phoenix last year).
- Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames GM on Daymond Langkow after he missed 78 games with a fractured vertebra:
“One of the guys who has consistently been at the training sessions is Daymond,” Feaster said. “He was fully cleared at the end of the season. He’s been fully training. No restrictions whatsoever
“He’s ready to go when camp opens.”
Feaster on Brendan Morrison who had surgery in April to repair a torn ACL:
“The big thing we’re going to have to do with him is to make sure he doesn’t overdo it,” Feaster said. “He’s pushing to be ready for camp, and our point to him is to follow what the doctors are telling him and make sure he’s fully healed.
“But he’s progressing very, very nicely. He’s very happy and so is the medical staff.”

- TMZ: Sean Avery was arrested this early morning for pushing a cop who was attempting to break up a loud party at his Hollywood Hills home. A neighbor called the police at 1:00 am, and when they arrived, Avery answered, shoved the cop and slammed the door. He was cooperative with the police after they knocked again. He’s being held on $20,000.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The city of Toronto has grown on Luke Schenn and he’s keen on staying, “Something will get figured out for sure.” Schenn added:
“I started here and had a good opportunity. As far as the team goes, we haven’t made the playoffs yet and we’ve had a bit of a rough time as an organization in terms of the standings. (But) I’ve played three years here and got to know a lot of people in this city. I have a better idea of how things work. No question I want to be part of things going forward and help achieve some success.
“Being drafted here (the Leafs traded up to get him fifth overall) was a dream come true for a kid and I got to experience a lot at a young age. I want to be part of the organization, hopefully, into the future.”
Hornby thinks Schenn will get a deal in the $3-4 million range.
- Dan Rosen of NHL.com: A better comparison for Drew Doughty would be Dion Phaneuf (6 years, $39 million) or perhaps Mike Green (4 years, $5.25 million). Doughty and Shea Weber have similar stats but Weber is 26, Doughty is 21. If Doughty signs before Luke Schenn and Zach Bogosian, he could help set the market for the other 2 as he’s been more productive so far. LA Kings GM Dean Lombardi said they continue to have contract discussions and is confident a deal will be get done. The Kings may be looking to lock Doughty up long-term, but he may only be looking for a short-term deal.
- Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun: Owen Nolan and Todd Fedoruk have signed professional tryout contracts with the Vancouver Canucks. Nolan had other PTO offers but he thought the Canucks were the best fit.
“I don’t want to say I’m happy that opportunity is there, you want those guys to be healthy, especially if I’m going to be part of that team,” said Nolan, reached at his off-season home in San Jose. “But there is an opportunity there and I’m going to give it everything I have to take a job.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Daniel Alfredsson, who’s recovering from a back procedure, will begin skating next week. Alfredsson is confident he’ll be ready for the start of training camp.
“I can’t say I’m 100% right now, but it’s definitely a lot better,” said Alfredsson, who has been stretching and doing yoga three times a week. “I haven’t really skated that much since February, so if I can get a little bit more ice, that’s good.”
- Teemu H (BroadStreetHockey.com) via twitter: According to Nikolai Zherdev’s agent, he did receive a contract offer from the Winnipeg Jets. Zherdev’s KHL deal with Atlant is worth more than the $2 million he got from the Flyers.

- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Hornby says there is no indications that the Maple Leafs are close to acquiring Brad Richards or that he’ll waive his NTC before July 1st. The NY Daily News is saying the Leafs will be trying to acquire his rights to get a jump on negotiations. GM Brian Burke has said in the past that he doesn’t like giving up assets just to talk. If Burke can’t acquire a top line center through free agency, he’ll look at trade options. NY Post is saying that Richards would like to re-unite with John Tortorella, but with an asking price of $7 million, it may be too much for the Rangers.
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Burke is working the phones, laying the groundwork to move up in the 2011 NHL entry draft. He’s said for awhile that he’d like to package a 1st and 2nd round pick to move up. One of the problems is that there is competition to move up into top 15. The Blackhawks have 2 2nd round picks that they could include. He’d like to sign Richards, but won’t trade for his rights. He could make a trade for a No. 1 center but there is no clear target at this point. Richards will be looking for a 6-8 year deal worth upwards of $8 million per season. He’s 31 and coming off a concussion and hip issues. The Leafs would only be interested at less years and less money.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Blue Jackets have talked with the Oilers and Flyers about the 8th overall pick. They have likely talked with other teams as well.
- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: Daniel Alfredsson had been attempting to avoid back surgery, but on Friday he’ll have surgery to correct a a nerve problem. Recovery is usually 4-6 weeks.
“He felt that to continue his career at the level he wants to, it’s the right thing to do,” said Murray. “It was a decision that he … was hoping he wouldn’t have to have.
“But the fact that the nerve … is affecting the muscle, in particular on the left side of his body in the hip area, he felt it was the right thing.”
- Slava Malamud via twitter: (Before the trade) Someone close to Ilya Bryzgalov may have leaked info involving the Capitals, creating ‘Bryzgalov-to-the-Caps’ rumors. Sport-Express reports that Bryzgalov is not talking with SKA and is looking at the Flyers, Lightning, and Capitals.
- CP in the Globe and Mail: The NHL returning to Quebec City as some point have taken a hit from political delays and legal threats.
“The optimal conditions for ensuring the return of a National Hockey League team are no longer aligned and the extra delays could compromise the ultimate objective,” Quebecor head Pierre Karl Peladeau said in a statement.
- David Pasgnotta via twitter: “Sounds like Craig Ramsay might not be back as Thrashers/whatever head coach next season. Cheveldayoff, expected GM, will bring in his own.”

- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: “The Stars have not asked Brad to waive his no-trade clause, and at this point in time, he has no intention of doing so,” agent Pat Morris told the Daily News when told of a source saying the Maple Leafs could make a deal with the Stars. “We’re still pointing toward July 1.” According to the source, “It’s legit” and “Toronto is desperate for a star like this.” The source added that the Maple Leafs felt close enough to a deal, that they have other deals in place to clear up some cap space. Richards has a no trade clause and his agent sees no reason to do a deal without letting other teams bid for his services. Morris said they could possibly consider a deal, but hadn’t heard of any trade that Nieuwendyk was working on.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: According to a source, Richards received offers from the Stars at the trade deadline of either Joe Thornton’s or Patrick Marleau’s contract. Thornton received a 3 year deal worth $21 million, a $7 million cap hit. Marleau received a 4 year contract worth $27.6 million, a $6.9 million cap hit. Tom Gaglardi’s offer to buy the Stars could be finished by the end of the week. All sides would then have to have “pre-packaged bankruptcy hearing,” which could take 30 days or longer to complete.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Nieuwendyk doesn’t have the Stars budget for next season yet, but expects it to be higher than the $47 million from last season. They currently have 17 players under contract for approximately $38 million.
“I think our first hurdle is to find out what our budget will be, and we should know that soon,” Nieuwendyk said. “But by [the lenders] giving us the ability to go out and sign Brad, it says that our payroll will be higher, so we’ll have some money to play with.
“We’re looking at free agency, we have our list and the guys initially we want to target. There’s money to be spent and players to go get.”
The Stars could use a scoring winger or two, and a top defenseman.
“I think we need a top-six forward,” Nieuwendyk said. “Maybe we get there through trade, too. I think the opportunity through trade is probably a more likely scenario than overpaying through free agency.”
- Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets need to send a message to fans, and make a move to improve the team. GM Scott Howson is dangling the 8th overall pick in this year’s draft for immediate help. They need to make a bold move to acquire top line forward or defenseman. Will he find a center for Rick Nash? Does he include Jake Voracek in a deal?
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Semyon Varlamov is a RFA and the Capitals could use his upside as part of a trade this season. The Caps have 2 other young goalies in Michal Neuvirth and Braden Holtby. Varlamov could be number 1 goalie in the NHL, but he has had injury issues in the past. He’s said he’d like to stay in Washington, his agent has said that KHL teams are interested.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Reports are saying that Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will have back surgery, recovery time is said to be 4 to 6 weeks. Alfredsson appeared in only 54 games this past season as he was bothered by back issues. The Sens are “99% certain” that they will keep the 6th overall pick in the draft. They will likely pick one of Sean Couturier, Ryan Strome, Mika Zibanejad, Gabriel Landeskog, Jonathan Huberdeau or possibly Dougie Hamilton.

- Randy Youngman of the OC Register: In 2003-04, the Anaheim Ducks almost traded Corey Perry to the Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks were prepared to send Perry and a 2004 1st round pick to the Oilers for center Mike Comrie. Comrie was holding out, and the Oilers were wanting Comrie to repay $2.5 million of his original signing bonus. When he didn’t repay the signing bonus, the deal fell through, and he was later traded to Philly. The Ducks used the 2004 1st round pick to select Ladislav Smid.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman Roman Hamrlik, a UFA at season’s end, hinted that it could be his last year in a Canadiens uniform. After the media named him the “Jacques Beauchamp Trophy” winner (goes to the unsung hero), “I’ve been doing this a long and especially (since) this is my last year, it’s an honour.” … “I know I’ve been playing with lots of good players this season. You guys had a choice and it’s a big honour for me.” P.K. Subban and Jaroslav Spacek are the only defenseman under contract for next year. Hamrlik, Andrei Markov, James Wisniewski, Hal Gill, Brent Sopel and Paul Mara are all UFA’s.
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Quote of the Year: Jaroslav Spacek on how he knew his March 4th knee surgery was a success, “I woke up with two knees and no big boobs.”A decision if he’ll play tonight won’t be made until a couple hours before the game.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe left last night’s game after 3 shifts with what coach Todd McLellan called a lower body tweak after the game. He was being evaluated after the game and more could be known today.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green and Tom Poti didn’t travel with the team to Toronto for tonight’s game. Green took part in full practice yesterday but didn’t take any contact. He hasn’t ruled out getting into a game before the playoffs start. Alex Semin had a maintenance day yesterday to help heal some nagging injuries. Boudreau said there is a “chance” he could miss 1 of the team’s 3 remaining games.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: Taylor Hall was asked to join Team Canada for the World Championships, but won’t be good enough shape to go. Sense around New Jersey is that they will do all they can to re-sign Zach Parise, but will he want to stay?
- AP on NHL.com: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller took some shots yesterday at practice. He still thinks he’s day-to-day and hopes to play on Saturday against the Blue Jackets. Jhonas Enroth will start tonight against the Lightning.

If Richards (31) is looking for a 3 year deal, he might be a fit for the Leafs, but he’ll be looking for longer term. Paul Stastny, if made available, could be a player the Leafs would be interested in. Cox wonders if Burke could try to package his 2 1st round picks and a Kulemin or Gunnarson to move up in the draft and grab a top prospect (top 4), but that would tough.

- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Coyotes know they need to re-sign Ilya Bryzgalov, but how much can they afford. He currently is making $4.25 million, and they may not be able to go higher than $5.25 million per season. There may not be a big market for goalies this summer, the Maple Leafs could be interested if he hits the market. Keith Yandle will also be looking for new deal, and he could jump from $1.3 million to the around the $4 million mark.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson still hasn’t ruled out returning to the lineup this year. Alfie has been rehabbing his back, and hopes to avoid surgery. Sens GM Bryan Murray started contract talks with goalie Craig Anderson last week, nothing is imminent.
- Jim Souhan of the Star Tribune: Wild defenseman Brent Burns won’t be a free agent until after next season, but if GM Chuck Fletcher thinks that he is not worth around $6 million a year in an extension, he may have to look at trading him. He may be a valuable trade assest. Souhan mentions Zach Parise, who’s a RFA, and may have difficulty working out a deal with New Jersey.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The NY Rangers are still unsure if Henrik Lundqvist will be able to start on today. Lundqvist didn’t practice yesterday with a stiff neck. Chad Johnson will get the start if Lundqvist can’t go.
- Jesse Spector of they NY Daily News: Sean Avery has been a healthy scratch in 2 of the last 3 Rangers games, and may not fit into the Rangers future plans. Avery has 1 more year on a $15.5 million deal. Dallas and the Rangers are each paying half his contract. “I’m just trying to come every day and work on my game, work on my conditioning,” Avery said after a morning workout in Greenburgh. “I can’t control what happens. I can only control what I’m gonna do. So I really didn’t put a lot of attention on thinking about (lineup status). I just came in ready to work.”

- Gene Wang of the Washington Post: Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said yesterday that goalie Semyon Varlamov will return sometime in the next week. Braden Holtby, despite going 4-0 with a 1.05 GAA, was reassigned to the AHL. Arnott has an undisclosed injury, Boudreau said he could be out ’7 to 10 days’ but he’s listed as week-to-week. Mike Green will likely skate on Monday, and will be day-to-day. He’s missed 17 of last 19 games with a concussion.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: If JS Giguere gets a contract for next year, he’ll likely have to take a about a $6 million pay cut. He makes $7 million this year, and would likely get a deal around $1 million.

- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Ales Hemsky left last night’s game with an apparent shoulder injury after being him by Jonathan Blum, he’ll undergo an MRI. He went on for a couple more shifts after the hit before leaving. “It’s more precautionary than anything else,” said head coach Tom Renney of the exam. “It’s one of those things where you want to give the athlete peace of mind and also to educate and inform ourselves.” Nikolai Khabibulin returned to practice yesterday for the 1st time since Feb. 21st when he suffered his eye injury.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Marian Gaborik and Marc Staal took part in the Rangers full practice yesterday, signaling they are getting closer. Staal will test his knee this morning, and hope to be able to go tonight against the Wild. Gaborik has said he’s been symptom free “at the moment”, and will take things day by day.
- Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson skated on his own on Sunday and Monday. His back spasms have caused some nerve issues and couldn’t say if he can avoid back surgery or possibly return this season. He’d like to get into a few games this year. “I just want to get it to the point where it feels strong,” Alfredsson said as he stood in the corridor outside the Senators dressing room. “For myself, knowing that it feels strong for training, for the summer, would be valuable.”
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Senators GM Bryan Murray said he only plans to sign one free agent this summer and build the team through young players. Owner Eugene Melnyk said the rebuilding plan won’t be a patchwork job.

- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Stickland heard that the Maple Leafs were considering trading for Paul Stastny before the deadline. Burke was weighing options between Stastny and Brad Richards. They have to give up a nice package to get Stastny as opposed to possibly getting Richards without giving up money. Richards would want a long term deal, may be in the $8 million range.
- TheFourthPeriod: Ales Hemsky was the 1st option for the Kings before they traded for his teammate, Dustin Penner. The Oilers wanted Brayden Schenn for Hemsky, which was obviously denied. The Oilers then wanted Wayne Simmonds, but “There’s no way we were (going to give up a roster player). This was about making this team better right now,” Lombardi told reporters. “To create a hole and fill a hole doesn’t make any sense. Not only does this fit in terms of a need, the left wing was sticking out, it’s not a cost-prohibitive contract. It fit for us in the longer term basis, as well.”

- There was a report that the New Jersey Devils were for sale. Tom Gulitti via twitter: He isn’t sure if the story is accurate. Darren Dreger is hearing the same thing. Craig Custance has been told by multiple sources that the story isn’t accurate. Update from Rich Chere: The Devils will release a statement shortly that the team is not for sale, and the Bloomberg report was wrong.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The Buffalo Sabres are being sold for $189 million, $175 million cash and $14 million in liabilities.
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The Sabres will announce on Thursday that the team will be sold to Terrence Pegula. GM Darcy Regier said last week he plans on shipping some veterans out before the Feb. 28th trade deadline. Tim Connolly, Mike Grier, Rob Niedermayer, Craig Rivet and Steve Montador could be on their way out. The Senators would trade anyone not named Aldredsson, Spezza or Karlsson. Burke should hear this week if Kaberle would waive his no-trade clause and submit a list of teams he’d go to, which may only be 2 or 3 Eastern Conference teams. It’s unlikely Burke could move him to San Jose for under-achieving Devin Setoguchi. Burke is said to have a list of 12 teams Francois Beauchemin wouldn’t mind playing for.

- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: If the Anaheim Ducks continue to hold on to their playoff spot, GM Bob Murray hopes to be a buyer at the trade deadline. Though he’s not saying, it’s likely he’d like to add to the blueline. Kevin Bieksa doesn’t appear to be heading to the trade block as the Canucks may be looking to move Mikael Samuelsson and Raffi Torres, both of who could fit on the 3rd line, especially if they move forward with putting Bobby Ryan in the 3rd line center spot. If the Ducks look at defenseman, they could be interested in Bryan McCabe, Francois Beauchemin, Tomas Kaberle, Robyn Regehr, Chris Phillips, and Joni Pitkanen.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Don’t be surprised if JS Giguere isn’t traded. Ideally they’d like to move him now but “a) he hasn’t played great; b) he’s been injured; c) no one would be willing to pay him $2.85 million, which would be tomorrow’s figure on what’s left on his deal.” At the deadline he’ll be owed $1.54 million, and not many contenders will be looking for a backup goalie.

Senators about to enter re-building mode

- Roy MacGregor of the Globe and Mail: In many minds, the Ottawa Senators season is a write off, and it’s time to look towards next season. The fans will likely accept a complete rebuild. Bryan Murray is rumored to be moving to a Senior Adviser role with the club. Eugene Melnyk has said the Cory Clouston will finish the year out as the teams coach, Murray will finish the year before handing the team off to someone else. Pierre McGuire has already been interviewed for the GM job, and there will be more interviews to take place. Coaching replacements could be Kirk Muller, Craig MacTavish and Kevin Dineen. Whoever is hired as the next coach will be chosen by the next GM. Murray will continue to look to unload his ‘assets’. Under-achieving Alex Kovalev could be moved, as well as defenseman Sergei Gonchar. Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Phillips may be asked to waive their no-trade clauses.
- Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen: Bryan Murray will continue to attempt to find new homes for Chris Phillips, Jarkko Ruutu, and Alex Kovalev, and bring in prospects and draft picks. Owner Melnyk said the team needs a ‘game changer’ but that will likely have to wait until the draft where they’ll likely pick in the top 5. They will look to build the team from within, and not go after any expensive free agents this off-season.

Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Michael Leighton lead the Philadelphia Flyers to the Stanley Cup last year, now he finds himself as the #3 goalie in Philly. The Flyers don’t want to send Leighton or Brian Boucher to the AHL as they’d have to clear waivers and would likely be claimed. Sergei Bobrovsky is on a 2-way contract but has claimed the #1 job. The NHL Christmas trade freeze is in effect until Dec. 27th. Tampa could use a goalie, and Washington may be interested in a veteran.

The Columbus Blue Jackets in search of a offensive defenseman have inquired about NY Rangers Michael Del Zotto. They may have been offering former Rangers, Fedor Tyutin, but it would take more. Nikita Filatov? The Philadelphia Flyers have been trying to clear some cap space, including Daniel Carcillo, Nikolai Zherdev or James vanRiemsdyk. They want a 1st round draft pick plus another pick for James vanRiemsdyk.
Terry Frei of the Denver Post: Colorado Avalanche defenseman Kyle Quincey will undergo season ending shoulder surgery. Team doctor, “After physical and diagnostic tests, the decision has been made to repair his shoulder at this time.”
Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: The St. Louis Blues activated defenseman Roman Polak from IR yesterday and returned Ian Cole to the AHL. The Blues also announced that Dave Scatchard will be out 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.

- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: There is no new progress to report on the Steven Stamkos contract extension. Yzerman was in Toronto but didn’t meet with Stamkos’s side. “I go back to what I said before, we have to make a deal that makes sense for everybody involved, and I can’t give a time frame on how long that will take,” Yzerman said.
- EJ Hradek via twitter: Hradek doesn’t see the Penguins trading Evgeny Malkin, but it’s possible that they talk about it internally.
- James Murphy of ESPN: A source inside the Boston Bruins has said they may consider allowing Tyler Seguin join Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. This move would give the Bruins some cap relief. With the glut of centers, they may leave Seguin on the wing for the remainder of the season. Marco Sturm should be back in a few weeks, with the Bruins needing to shed between $3.1 and $3.2 million. Jordan Caron has struggled of late and could find himself heading to the AHL. If Seguins was loaned to the Juniors, Caron sent to the AHL, and a Daniel Paille trade (being shopped by the team), would get them cost to the cap when Sturm returns.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Marco Sturm has a no trade clause and not a no movement clause, Murphy still doesn’t see the Bruins waiving him.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Colorado Avalanche will move Tomas Fleischmann back to his natural left wing position, playing with either Paul Stastny or Matt Duchene.

If Brad Richards hits the open market in July, he’ll be looking for a team with stable ownership after being in Tampa and Dallas. Friedman thinks Daniel Alfredsson is injured more than he’s letting on.

The Caps had $3.8 million in cap room, they’ll now have $2.5 million in cap space for a deadline deal. Corey Masisak via twitter: Caps GM George McPhee says they would have cap space to add a $8 million player at the deadline, Masisak throws out Brad Richards name.

I believe Randy Carlyle is one of the best coaches in the league. But sometimes — and that time may be coming — you stay long enough in the same place and the players stop responding. It’s why great coaches like Scotty Bowman didn’t stay in the same place forever; the late Pat Burns coached four different teams to impressive levels of success. But like any coach, the players stop responding after a while. It may be that time has come in Anaheim.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators were without Jason Spezza last night, he’s listed as day-to-day with a groin injury. He is questionable for tonight’s game against the Canadiens. He originally hurt his groin before training camp. Defenseman Brian Lee played forward last night for the Sens. Senators GM Bryan Murray has had “quite a few calls” from GMs since he mentioned on Wednesday that he’s looking for a tough defenseman, though most are offering expensive players. There were 12 scouts from 12 teams watching last nights game versus the Sabres. Daniel Alfredsson recorded his 1,000 point last night on an empty net goal. Jason Pominville is skating the Sabres but no timetable for his return as been set. He’s not taking contact, and has a baseline test scheduled for next week. Great quote for Garrioch “It looked like the enigmatic Alex Kovalev actually felt like playing Friday. He made a hit and took a shot on the same shift. Can he do it two nights in a row? Doubtful.”
- TSN Ice Chips: Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows is expected to practice with the team next week. Dan Hamhuis hopes to be able to play on Tuesday, his foot is not broken. LA Kings defenseman Matt Greene has been cleared for hockey activities. Cam Janssen passed his baseline test and hopes to return next Thursday.

- Tom Gulitti of the Bergeron Record: The New Jersey Devils caught some salary relief at the expense of Brian Rolston. Rolston will be out 4-6 weeks with a sports hernia that will require surgery, he’s been placed on LTIR. His $5,062,500 cap hit won’t count against the teams cap number while he’s out. They’ll now be able to dress 20 players, they went with 16 last night. Lou Lamoriello also said that Anton Volchenkov probably won’t be ready this weekend after suffering a broken nose and a stiff neck.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Semyon Varlamov will probably be in the Capitals lineup on Saturday as he’s recovering from an undisclosed injury. He’s deemed himself 100% and ready to go. Marcus Johansson (foot) is week-to-week after blocking a shot. Tom Poti and Matt Bradley are day-to-day.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Brooks Orpik missed last night’s game against the Maple Leafs, his 2nd in a row, and is day-to-day with a groin strain. He should be ready to go soon though. Zbynek Michalek left Monday’s game with an apparent shoulder injury, with the team giving no hint as to the severity of it. Bill Guerin was in Pittsburgh to take care of a few things in the city, took in the game with Mario Lemieux. Was he also looking for a contract?
- James Gordon of Ottawa Citizen: Daniel Alfredsson left Monday’s game with a lower-body injury, will be ready to for tonight’s game against the Hurricanes. Brian Elliot will either start tonight or on Saturday against the Canadiens.
- Michael Russo via twitter: The Minnesota Wild will make a decision this morning if Andrew Brunette is ready to go or if they’ll need to call up someone.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Atlanta Thrashers defenseman Zach Bogosian is day-to-day with a shoulder injury.
