More Injuries in Vancouver … Podcast from GlobeSports … Hudler back to Detroit

  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: The injury front keeps getting bigger out in Vancouver. Already without Mikael Samuelsson, Steve Bernier, Willie Mitchell, and Shane O’Brien (disciplinary); Daniel Sedin was held out of last night’s game, and most likely tonight’s game with back spasms. The spasms flared up on Wednesday. During last night’s game, the Canucks got another scare when Alex Burrows blocked a one-timer with his throat. He appear to be breating fine later on in the dressing room. Swelling of the throat area will be monitored. “My throat is inflamed and I had a tough time swallowing,” Burrows said. “We’ll see how it goes but I think I’ll be fine. “I had a tough time breathing and that had me thinking so I tried to get off to get medical treatment right away.”
  • Podcast from the Globe and Mail: Round table taking about possibility of the Winnipeg Jets returning, Red Wings resurgence, big names possibly taking over in Calgary and the Montreal Canadiens playoff bid.
  • Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Daily News: Some changes will be made to the Flyers roster next season, and GM Paul Holmgren already has an idea.

“There are certain guys on this team that are going to be back here next year,” Holmgren said. “And there are certain guys who aren’t.”"So if the season ended today, you have a pretty good idea of what you would do?” I asked.”Most of it, yeah,” he said.

  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Braydon Coburn is denying the rumor that he turned down a contract offer from the Flyers and won’t negotiate until after the season. He doesn’t think his agent has talked to the Flyers at all about a contract.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: The director of European Scouting for the Detroit Red Wings, Hakan Andersson, has met with Mats Zuccarello-Aasen in Sweden.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: Jiri Hudler may be hoping to return to the Detroit Red Wings next year. The GM of Moscow Dynamo may be switching teams, and might not try to prevent it. Hudler left the Wings to sign a 2 year, $10 million contract in the KHL. If he returns to the Red Wings, he’ll be on a 2 year contract worth $2.875 million a season, a contract that was awarded by an arbitrator last year.

Around the Boards: Sedin and Kovalchuk set backs, S. Niedermayer on the move that the Deadline?

  • Matthew Sekerer of the Globe and Mail: Daniel Sedin was hoping to return to the Canucks on Tuesday or tonight, but a set back to his broken foot has pushed back the expected return day till next week at the earliest. In better Canucks news, Roberto Luongo will be starting tonight against the Red Wings.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Despite the Blackhawks`, David Bolland, expected to be out a couple months, the Hawks won`t put him on LTIR. GM Bowman won`t use the LTIR to clear cap space “because that would be money he’d have to shed when Bolland returns in February or March.“ They also don`t plan on trading for a replacement, as they are close to the cap.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Ilya Kovalchuk won`t be returning to the Thrashers lineup tonight as originally hoped.  His injured foot became sore while warming up for practice.
  • Eric Stevens of the OC Register: JS Giguere wants to be a number 1 goalie, and wants it to be in Anaheim. His comments about that he`d rather retire than be a back-up was suppose to be taken as sarcastic. “”I don’t regret what I said but it didn’t come out exactly how I wanted,” Giguere said. “I just wanted to say I’m not done. I want to compete. I don’t want to be written off. I’m still here and I wanted to battle and have fun.”"
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: If the Ducks are out of playoff contention around trade deadline time, Scott Niedermayer could see himself being dealt, and maybe to the Devils. “I think it’s a possibility,” Niedermayer said of being traded by the Ducks at some point this season. “Last year we were kind of in a situation where we were teetering and there was some talk and rumors. You start to think about it.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Stars are looking for a right-handed Right Winger and/or a Defenceman, the underachieving  Fabian Brunnstrom could be used as trade bait.

Around the Boards: Ward, Williams, D. Sedin, Luongo and Malkin

Hockey Night in Canada’s Hotstove: GMs to look at new helmet ideas and how to stop headshots.

All these injuries is getting ridiculous.

  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: 7 1/2 minutes into the Hurricanes - Blue Jackets game, Cam Ward was clipped by a skate, slicing open his left leg. Rick Nash’s skate cut Ward above the knee, and coach Paul Maurice called it a ’significant injury’.  Ward received stitches and remained in hospital overnight.
  • Helen St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings Jason Williams awkwardly crashed into the boards last night, fracturing his fibula. Williams will be out at least 2 months.
  • Finally some good news on the injury front

  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks sniper Daniel Sedin and goalie Roberto Luongo will be practicing with the team in Dallas today. Sedin has missed 14 games with a broken foot and Luongo has been out for 5 games with a broken rib. There is a chance that both players could be back in the lineup on Tuesday.
  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Evgeni Malkin is also close to returning. Malkin has missed 5 games with a strained shoulder.

    Frustration in Fantasy Hockey

There are 2 things in fantasy hockey pools that can be so frustrating, injuries and shutouts. Long term injuries to key players, especially early on in the season, can be really frustrating.

In the 1st week and half fantasy players have seen Andre Markov and Johan Franzen go on the shelf for up to 4 months. If you have both, you’re season may be over before it really got started.

If you’ve done a ‘pick from a box’ type of pool and had one of them, your odds of winning have dramatically dropped. Any type of long term injuries in one of those pools where you can’t interchange players, I wish you luck.

The latest player to be out, albeit for not as long Markov and Franzen, is Daniel Sedin of the Canucks, who’s gone for 4-6 weeks with a broken left foot.  Though he may be back in a month or so, it may take a little longer for him to get going after recovering from a broken foot.

Getting back to why shutouts can be really frustrating. After seeing one of your players get seriously injured, having a backup goalie get a shutout while you have that teams starter, has to be the next most annoying thing in fantasy hockey. It’s not as bad for teams that have goalies that split time (which seems like plenty of NHL teams are doing so far), but when you goalie usually gets 60-70 starts in a season, it makes you want to throw you computer mouse across the room. Stephen Valiquette was the last goalie to do this, with a 3-0 shutout last night. Antti Niemi of the ‘Hawks and Mathieu Garon have also recorded shutouts. In all 3 cases, the teams #1 starter has yet to record a shutout.

Canucks Close to Locking Up Key Piece

After winning the Northeast division with 100 points, the Vancouver Canucks lost in the Conference Semifinals to the Chicago Blackhawks. Fans were upset. But after the lose sunk in, uncertainty and nervousness blanketed the organization. Their 2 star forwards, the Sedin’s, may walk for nothing, signing as unrestricted free agents elsewhere. Their all-world goalie, Roberto Luongo, could be traded as his contract expired after the 2009-10 season.

Fast-forward a few moments. The uneasiness is gone, and optimism of a very successful is growing by the day. The Sedin twins were locked up to long term deals, Mikael Samuelsson was signed to put the puck in the net, Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich were brought in through trade to add depth and stability to the point,  and there are know reports that Luongo is close to signing a contract extension.  Canucks fans, breathe easy.

But in this NHL when a star play signs a new contract, that news tends to play second fiddle to “what is the cap hit”. This my friends is unknown at the moment.

    Sedins in Toronto?

    • On the Fan 590’s Bob McCown show this afternoon in Toronto, Ron Wilson let it slip that Maple Leafs will pursue the Sedin’s this off season. In what could easily be percieved as ‘tampering’ had it come a week ago, Wilson suggested it was a certainty that the Leafs would chase the two Sedins.

    Daily Rumors - June 30th

    • Mark Everson of the NY Post is reporting that the New Jersey Devils are close to re-signing Johnny Oduya to a 4 year deal worth in the neighborhood of $3-4 million per year. This would be a good signing for the Devils, he’s a going to be a solid D-man for years. But they’ll need to look at bringing in some offensive help as they are going to let Brian Gionta leave as a UFA. Defensive specialist John Madden also appears to on his way out. Madden is 36, but still has a couple good years left in him.
    • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Blackhawks and Havlat continue to talk contract. Havlat is looking for a multi-year deal at a lower amount than what he made last year ($6 million) but the Hawks are looking at a one year deal with a slight raise. Toews and Kane will be getting a raise next year, so the Hawks have to watch their future money. David Bolland just signed a 5 year deal at around $18 million. Cam Barker and Chris Versteeg are also RFA’s for the Hawks. The Bulin wall’s big contract comes off the books, but they are showing interest in re-signing him. You have to think the Hawks are rethinking their decision to give Brian Campbell that big deal last year.
    • According to the Montreal Gazette, the Montreal Canadiens may look at the Sedin twins if they decide not to re-sign with the Canucks. I didn’t really think of the Canadiens as potential destinations for the twins at first, but if they could easily replace Koivu, Tanguay, and Kovalev, and leave a bit more money to re-sign Mike Komisarek. Saku is as good as gone, and may follow his brother to Minnesota. Montreal may also look at Daniel Brier and his big contract if they can’t deal for Vincent Lecavallier. Philly would be so happy if they could find someone to take the $7 million cap hit off their books, as their cap number must be getting close to $70 million for next year.
    • The Raleigh News Observer is saying that Hurricanes GM wants to re-sign Eric Cole and Chad LaRose to multiyear deals. They are looking to get Cole for 2 years.
    • From TSN.ca, Vancouver Canucks GM has left Sweden and Sedin’s with a contract offer to mull over. I have a feeling they will remain with the Canucks, as I don’t see any other GM offering more money than the Canucks will. But if they are dead set on signing an 8-12 year deal, they won’t return to Canucks, as Gillis has stated he wants no part of those extremely long term deals.

Edmonton has reportedly offered last years starting goalie, Dwayne Roloson, a 1 year deal worth $3 million. The 39 year old Roloson would like to sign a 2 year deal.

Jay Bouwmeester should have a multi-year offer from the Calgary Flames today.

Vancouver Canucks GM Chasing Sedins in Sweden

    • Agent Turned GM Heading to Sweden to Chase Sedins — TSN is reporting that Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis has flown to Sweden, and is meeting with the Sedin’s in advance of Wednesday’s opening of the Free Agency Period. If nothing else, this certainly shows that the Canucks are serious about them coming back. Though i am a big fan of the twin’s, they top my list of “Players most likely to be overpaid” this off-season. This should be the last off-season with players receiving $6.5-$8.5mm salaries (Sedin’s, Boumeester, Hossa, Gaborik, Havlat etc). The realities of the global econimic crisis, should be reflected with a serious market correction in free agent salaries in the summer of 2010.
    • Reminds me of Reason #46 Why Peter Chiarelli is a great GM: Marc Savard makes $5mm this upcoming season. And to think, GM Glen Sather pays two second line centers (Gomez & Drury) over $7mm each, and an AHL defencman (Wade Redden) $6.5mm. Remember when people talked about Sather as if he were an all-time great GM?

Sedins want $63 million contract each

The Los Angeles correspondent of Swedish newspaper Expressen reported ”Daniel and Henrik Sedin both want 12-year, $63 million contracts to stay with the Vancouver Canucks. They’ll be unrestricted free agents on July 1″…

If you average it out it’s 5.25 million each per season. The contact would obviously be front loaded with buy out options toward the end. It sounds like a lot of money at first glance but with Roberto Luongo between the pipes and the Sedin twins locked up long term Vancouver would have a good core to build around.
