Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Audio, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on February 24th, 2011
- Darren Dreger Audio on Team 990 : (Feb. 24th) Dreger talks Brad Richards, Peter Stastny’s comments, Ottawa Senators, Nik Zherdev, Craig Rivet, Marek Svatos, Ales Hemsky asking price, Andrei Kostitsyn, and John-Michael Liles
- Darren Dreger of TSN: The Leafs are looking for a Dman, but won’t overpay for it. Sens GM Bryan Murray has talked to Chris Phillips’ agent about possible contract extensions, though he could still waive his no-trade clause and be moved out. The Canadiens could have an interest in Bryan McCabe. The Canucks may need to add a 3rd/4th line center. Though there’s interest in Smid, Penner, and Hemsky, nothing is imminent. The Flames may look to add a forward.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards hasn’t skated since Feb. 13th and is suffering concussion-like symptoms. GM Nieuwendyk does not expect Richards to play a game before Monday’s trade deadline, and that he’s not shopping him around. “It’s the same answer it has been. Our first priority is to re-sign Brad Richards to a long-term contract. That is what we would like to do,” Nieuwendyk said. “However, we have to be open to any possibility and we have to be open to situation that could improve our team.”
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The Daily News has learned that the Brad Richards is likely staying in Dallas as the team is said to be buyers and not sellers. If the Stars decide to move him, and he waives his no-trade, the Rangers may not be willing to part with the young players the Stars want in return. The Rangers are more likely to look for low cost veteran rental.
- Tim Seppa (hockey prospectus) on ESPN: Seppa looks at “Problems” and “Fixes” for the Atlantic Division. Philadelphia Flyers: Problem is goaltending, with Tomas Vokoun as a possible fix. Pittsburgh Penguins: Problem with Penguins is the 2nd line center spot and PP due to injuries. Tim Connolly could be an option. New York Rangers: Need 1 or 2 top 6 forwards. Leafs Clarke MacArthur could be an option if they don’t plan on re-signing him. New Jersey Devils: Problem is the lack of a puck moving defenseman. John-Michael Liles could be an option, Lou may need to trade away David Clarkson to clear cap space. New York Islanders: They need to keep stockpiling prospects/picks. Milan Jurcina could be moved out, possibly to Anaheim for Luca Sbisa.
- NHL Sources Say video from Tuesday: “The Hockeycentral panel take a look at a current Oiler and a former Leaf who could be traded before Monday’s deadline.”
Players with the worst plus/minus so far this season
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Opinion on January 28th, 2011
So the all-star break is upon us (yawn), and in honor this 4 day break, I decided to put together a list of the worst plus/minuses so far this season. I’m still amazed (and annoyed, on my fantasy team) that Kovalchuk leads this category. I know he doesn’t always focus on the defensive side of the things but….. Finding 4 San Jose Sharks is also a bit of a surprise. Maple Leafs defenseman/forward Brett Lebda is a funny case as he’s a -19 in 22 games, that’s terrible.

Savard says he may have rushed his return … Redden undecided on what he’ll do … Langenbrunner to Avs? Harding torn ACL-PCL
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 26th, 2010
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Rob Blake could be joining the NHL head office soon. The Minnesota Wild are looking at UFA Jose Theodore as a potential backup if they decide to go that route. Wade Redden’s waiver period is over on Monday at noon, and he can be assigned to the AHL. If he reports, he’ll continue to earn the $23 million and 4 years that he has left on the contract.
“I really don’t have any conclusions right now,” Redden said. “I got to take this time and see what develops. But at this point, I don’t have any answers for you. We’ll see what happens. I haven’t made any decisions yet. I have some time to think about it.”
Marc Savard hasn’t started skated, and won’t anytime soon. According to Chiarelli, it could be a month, 2 months, maybe more for Savard to get back on the ice.
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: Marc Savard talked to the media yesterday morning,
“I think on my own fault I might have come back a little too early last year,” he told the media. “That’s my own fault. I guess it’s just the hockey player in me that I wanted to play hockey in the playoffs. I had huge fatigue problems during that series, and I think when [David] Krejci got hurt [in Game 3], that really hurt me.”
Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien said he was unaware of this. Savard failed a neurological test on September 17th. There is no timetable on when he’ll return.
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: The Colorado Avalanche are rumored to be interested in acquiring Jamie Langenbrunner from the New Jersey Devils. The Devils may not want to move Langenbrunner and his $2.8 million cap hit, but may not have much of a choice. He does have a no-trade clause. David Clarkson’s name has also come up rumors,
“There’s nothing I can do about it,” Clarkson said. “I was glad to re-sign here this summer and I love playing for the Devils. They’ve always been good to me, but it could be anybody. The team has a decision and Mr. Lamoriello has to think hard and it’s not going to be easy for him, but all I can do is my job and just go out there and play and work hard off the ice and that’s it.”
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: The Minnesota Wild have probably lost backkup goalie, Josh Harding, for the season after he tore his ACL and MCL in his right knee. GM Cliff Fletcher says the team will give Anton Khudobin a chance before they at alternative options.
