Pronger’s injury … Free agent Weber … Cox thinks Leafs should go after Bryzgalov … NHL Sources Say Video
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on March 13th, 2011
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPHilly: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren says that Chris Pronger is still day-to-day with his hand injury, and has been wearing a removable cast. He has now missed 3 games due to the injury, but expects to play on Tuesday. The playoffs are 14 games away for them, but the Flyers say they are not worried.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson wonders if the Oilers would send Shea Weber an offer sheet this off-season if he doesn’t re-sign with the Predators before that. They have plenty of cap space and extra 1st rounder this year. Weber could also re-sign with the Predators for 1 year, and become a UFA after next year. If he becomes a UFA next year, Detroit could be interested with Lidstom possibly retiring. Comparable for Weber are Brent Seabrook’s $5.8 million cap hit (5 year, $29 million) and Duncan Keith’s $5.5 million cap hit (13 years, $72 million).
- Damian Cox of the Toronto Star: Cox thinks that James Reimer may not be ready to be the Maple Leafs number 1 goalie next year as he has let in some soft goals lately, and that the should go after UFA Ilya Bryzgalov.
- Darren Dreger of TSN: A reader asks Dreger why the Red Wings didn’t really do anything at the deadline. In the weeks leading up to the trade deadline Ken Holland looked around to see what was available, but found that the price was too high or didn’t match their needs. Holland initially had some concerns with the number of scoring chances Detroit was giving up and subsequently, his teams goals against, but true to form, he wasn’t interested in a quick fix, or snap decision and vowed in the days leading up to the trade deadline, to monitor his team closely.

Crosby’s family wants him to retire hockey says McCown, Kypreos responds … Stastny has back injury … Perron done for year?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Videos on March 12th, 2011
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Paul Stastny suffered a back injury last night, his status for tonight is not known yet, but it’s not looking good.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Sources are saying that Blues forward David Perron will not attempt to return this year. Perron hasn’t gotten past light workouts and isn’t close to getting back on the ice. The team hasn’t announced he’s done for the year, but sources are telling Strickland that is the case. Darren Pang via twitter: “There’s no official shut down of Blues David Perron. Plenty of games left for GM Doug Armstrong and staff to divide that.”
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Chris Pronger chewed out teammate Claude Giroux after a team’s win this past week. “Nobody likes the way we’ve been playing, and it just came to a head in that particular instance, I’m sure,” said Holmgren. “Just got to get on the same page. I’m assuming you’re talking about Chris and Claude, right? Claude Giroux wants to win, but sometimes he needs to hear from the older guys on the team that this is how it’s done.” Holmgren added: “I don’t think it’s bad. Claude, maybe he didn’t like being spoken to like that, but I think he understands what’s being said to him, and he’ll benefit from that.” Pronger is questionable for tonight’s game with a hand injury he suffered blocking a shot.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards after his 1st game back after his concussion, “I felt all right, but it wasn’t how I felt in the middle of the season when I was on form,” Richards said. “But I had to get that one out of the way and I’ll probably have to get another one or two out of the way before I get back to feeling good.” “I was probably looking over my shoulder too much, but that will go away once I get used to the game,” Richards said. “I felt that, as the game went on, I was more comfortable holding onto the puck, and I think I’ll look to take more chances as I go forward. It’s confidence, really, knowing you’re going to get hit but also knowing you’re going to be fine.”

Parise cleared to skate … Staal and Gaborik practice … Hemsky injured … Alfie would like to play this year
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on March 3rd, 2011
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Ales Hemsky left last night’s game with an apparent shoulder injury after being him by Jonathan Blum, he’ll undergo an MRI. He went on for a couple more shifts after the hit before leaving. “It’s more precautionary than anything else,” said head coach Tom Renney of the exam. “It’s one of those things where you want to give the athlete peace of mind and also to educate and inform ourselves.” Nikolai Khabibulin returned to practice yesterday for the 1st time since Feb. 21st when he suffered his eye injury.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Marian Gaborik and Marc Staal took part in the Rangers full practice yesterday, signaling they are getting closer. Staal will test his knee this morning, and hope to be able to go tonight against the Wild. Gaborik has said he’s been symptom free “at the moment”, and will take things day by day.
- Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson skated on his own on Sunday and Monday. His back spasms have caused some nerve issues and couldn’t say if he can avoid back surgery or possibly return this season. He’d like to get into a few games this year. “I just want to get it to the point where it feels strong,” Alfredsson said as he stood in the corridor outside the Senators dressing room. “For myself, knowing that it feels strong for training, for the summer, would be valuable.”
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Senators GM Bryan Murray said he only plans to sign one free agent this summer and build the team through young players. Owner Eugene Melnyk said the rebuilding plan won’t be a patchwork job.
- Rich Chere via twitter: Zach Parise has been cleared to start skating and could be 2-3 weeks away from practicing with the team.
- Rob Rossi via twitter: Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik will still be out 4 weeks. Winger Chris Kunitz could be back this weekend. There is no change in Sidney Crosby’s status.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Alex Edler is expected to be out until the start of the playoffs at the earliest. With him being on the LTIR, it enable the Canucks to bring in both Max Lapierre and Chris Higgins.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: It’s looking like Blues forward David Perron is done for the year, as he is still not symptom free.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Stickland thinks the Blues should look at trading for Paul Stastny this summer.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Stickland heard that the Maple Leafs were considering trading for Paul Stastny before the deadline. Burke was weighing options between Stastny and Brad Richards. They have to give up a nice package to get Stastny as opposed to possibly getting Richards without giving up money. Richards would want a long term deal, may be in the $8 million range.
- TheFourthPeriod: Ales Hemsky was the 1st option for the Kings before they traded for his teammate, Dustin Penner. The Oilers wanted Brayden Schenn for Hemsky, which was obviously denied. The Oilers then wanted Wayne Simmonds, but “There’s no way we were (going to give up a roster player). This was about making this team better right now,” Lombardi told reporters. “To create a hole and fill a hole doesn’t make any sense. Not only does this fit in terms of a need, the left wing was sticking out, it’s not a cost-prohibitive contract. It fit for us in the longer term basis, as well.”
Rumors involving the Kings, Senators, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Hurricanes … and some injury notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL Rumors on February 12th, 2011
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The LA Kings are intrigued by Oilers forward Ales Hemsky. The Oilers are listening to offers but are not desperate to trade him. The Kings hope more teams fall out of the playoff race, increasing the amount of talent that might be available. Money is once again an issue for the Dallas Stars at the deadline, as it’s unknown if the lenders will give them the go ahead to add some help, they have struggled of late and are dropping in the standings. If they continue to drop in the standings and are on the playoff bubble, they make look for Brad Richards packages. As of yesterday, Senators GM Murray still hadn’t heard what Chris Phillips was thinking regarding waiving his no-trade. Sharks aren’t saying much about what they are planning on doing, have been looking for a top 4 defenseman in the past. Seabrook rumors were a “total fabrication.”
- Helene Elliott via twitter: The LA Kings are still looking for a high-end forward. They were not in the late discussions with Ottawa for Mike Fisher.
- Adam Jahns via twitter: Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman, “We’re trying to find a defenseman that can be a penalty-killing type and eat up some minutes on the PK.”
- Darren Dreger of TSN: If the Red Wings continue to struggle defensively in the next 2 weeks, GM Ken Holland may look to make a deal. Though the Hurricanes would need a defenseman as part of the deal, they could consider trading Joe Corvo, Joni Pitkanen or Ian White.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: McGuire (I’m guessing Pierre) on Sheldon Souray, “There’s some talk about Montreal for Sheldon.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: UFA’s Chris Phillips and Jarkko Ruutu are as good as gone by the trade deadline. The Senators are also getting some interest in Filip Kuba, Chris Kelly, and Chris Neil. Garrioch doesn’t think anyone will want Alex Kovalev. The Canadiens, Bruins, Sharks and Ducks are looking for defenseman and could be interested in Phillips. Chris Campoli may be a good fit in Anaheim, a UFA at season’s end. If they dealt Phillips to Montreal, they may want Max Pacioretty in the deal.
- Ian Walker via twitter: Dan Hamhuis is out indefinitely with a concussion.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Jonas Gustavsson will be out at least a week after he underwent a heart ablation procedure yesterday (his 3rd since the beginning of last year).
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: JS Giguere will start in net for the Maple Leafs tonight against the Canadiens. Giguere met with GM Brian Burke to discuss if they’ll look to trade him or not. He’d like to remain with the Leafs but would want to play if he does. “Hopefully I can give them a reason to keep me. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t even know if there’s a trade market for me anywhere. I still make a lot of money, so it’s something that can be tricky. I haven’t asked – anyway, I’m going to stop there.”
- Chris Vivlamore via twitter: Teams scouting the Thrashers-Rangers games last night were the Flyers, Red Wings and Canadiens. Steve Zipay adds the the Bruins were also there.
- Thomas Reed via twitter: Scouts at the Blue Jackets-Avalanche game last night were the Thrashers, Flyers, Coyotes, Canucks, Maple Leafs, Penguins, Senators, Bruins, and Capitals.
- David Rogers via twitter: John Davidson is reporting the David Perron is taking part in light workouts, but isn’t at the stage to begin skating.
Toews and Getzlaf injured … Rafalski questionable for Tuesday … Oshie late Jan. return? No progress for Perron and McDonald
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on December 29th, 2010
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews left last night’s game 13 minutes in with a shoulder injury. More will be known today on the extent of the injury.
- Eric Stephens OC Register: Ryan Getzlaf took a puck off the forehead and left the ice with 4 minutes left in the 2nd. The extent of the injury is not known yet.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Brian Rafalski is questionable for Thursday’s game after being a late scratch Monday with a back injury.
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Larry Quinn, a minority owner in the Buffalo Sabres is denying reports that a letter of intent was signed to sell the team to Terrence Pegula. Quinn said that the Buffalo News report that a document was signed to buy the Sabres from majority owner Tom Golisano is not correct. There’s no doubt the process has begun, but maybe not to the extent being reported.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Blues forward TJ Oshie is recovering faster that expected. He broke is ankle on Nov. 10th, with surgery putting him on the shelf for 3 month, re-evaluation was to take place in February. There is a chance that Oshie could be back in the Blues lineup at the end of January. He’s been skating for about a week and progressing well. Neither David Perron and Andy McDonald are still not symptom free from their concussions. There were reports that McDonald was riding a bike but that may not have been the case.
- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: It looks like Pascal Leclaire will be out another at least another week with his lower body injury. He could be ready for their Jan. 7th game against the Blackhawks.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: Todd White was placed on waivers again by the NY Rangers, with Mats Zuccarello with the team, it could spell the end of his tenure with the Rangers.
Fleischmann to Cancucks? Kings? Would the Pens trade Malkin? Would the Devils trade Brodeur? Perron close to be symptom free
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 29th, 2010
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Rumors are heating up that the Washington Capitals are looking to move Tomas Fleischmann for a defenseman. Fleischmann has 4 goals in 22 games, was a healthy scratch mid November against the Sabres, and is a UFA at seasons end. The Capitals were interested in Kevin Bieksa in the off-season. There was a late night rumor last night that Fleischmann could be heading to the LA Kings.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Dispatch: David Perron has missed his 12th straight game will post-concussion symptoms. He’s now able to at least play video games, before he was only able to rest. Perron was hit [24] days ago by Joe Thornton (I guess those people calling him a faker were completely wrong, and no I’m not referring to Gary Bettman), and feels he’s getting ‘close’ to being symptom free. Perron said this about Thornton, “Obviously he’s not trying to hurt me there. He doesn’t know it’s going to go on this long and I’m going to miss this many games, so obviously he wouldn’t do that.”
- Chris Zupke of the OC Register: Teemu Selanne said he’ll be ready to return to the Ducks lineup tonight. Lubomir Visnovsky will see today how his back is feeling before declaring if he will/won’t play tonight. Joffery Lupul could rejoin the team today after playing a few games with Syracuse of the AHL.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Sami Salo continues to rehab from his ruptured Achilles, with reports of him beginning skating in 3 weeks, with a possible January return. No timetable has been set.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Avalanche defenseman Kyle Cumiskey could be trade bait, they are looking to add some grit and leadership. Evgeni Malkin is having another ‘average’ season, and the Penguins might consider dealing him for a heavy ransom, and go with Jordan Staal as their #2 center. The Oilers may have an interest in Dallas Stars Dman Mark Fistric. The Stars may not be interested in giving Brad Richards a deal in the 6-8 year range as they may be worried about his foot speed as he gets older. The Stars may prefer a 3 year deal. The Kings will be interested if the Stars are thinking of dealing him.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks wonders if the Devils would consider trading Martin Brodeur. Lou would likely never approach Brodeur about this, Brodeur would have to bring it up with Lou. The Capitals would have to be interested if he were to become available. The Capitals could send a young goaltenders, “John Carlson or Karl Alzner — Mike Green? as well as young center.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Ron Wilson continues to juggle his lines looking for some sort of offense. Tyler Bozak who was/is the teams number 1 center was dropped to the 3rd and 4th lines in Saturday’s loss to the Senators. The Leafs are on a 0-7-1 road streak and having only scored 16 goals on the road in 10 games.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs aren’t considering sending Tyler Bozak to the Marlies, but Simmons thinks they should reconsider as he’s “He is 316th in the NHL in scoring, 394th in scoring at even strength, 153rd in power-play points. He is on pace for a terrible 23-point season.” Simmons wonders what the trade value for Mikhail Grabovski would be if Burke through his name out there, his value may not get higher than it is now.
Surgery today for Vinny … Gagner, Krejci back practicing … Ehrhoff will take discount
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 15th, 2010
- Erik Erlendsson of Tampa Tribune: Vincent Lecavalier will have surgery on his broken handle today and will be out of the lineup for 3-4 weeks. He has a “non-displaced fracture near the knuckle below his right index finger”. Simon Gagne skated over the weekend for the first time since straining his neck back on Oct. 21st. He could be back practicing with the team by next week.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The Canucks and Christian Ehrhoff have halted contract talks for now, but Ehrhoff did say he would take less than market value to stay in Vancouver. Ehrhoff is making $3.4 million this year. “Hamhuis’ $4.5 million salary may be used by Gillis as a soft cap for Vancouver defencemen. The Canucks probably don’t want to pay any more for Ehrhoff, who could command $5 million annually as an unrestricted free agent. “
- Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald: David Krejci took part in his first practice yesterday since suffering a moderate concussion on Nov. 6th. He hasn’t taken any neurological test yet, and isn’t able to take part in contract drills yet. “We don’t really know. Concussions are concussions and it’s really hard to pinpoint to (a return),” said Julien. “He could have a setback or we might want to hold him back a little longer, that’s the part we don’t know. He passed the test that allowed him to practice with us, but he was not allowed any contact and hopefully that will be the next step.”
- Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Carlo Colaiacovo could return to the Blues lineup tonight as he’s been symptom free from his latest concussion for 8 days, and has skated with the team for the last 3 days. David Perron status is still uncertain, and he didn’t travel with the team.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Jonathan Bernier will get the start in net tonight for the Kings.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Though not a 100% certain, but it looks like Sergei Bobrovsky will start tonight, and James van Riemsdyk could return to the lineup against the Senators. van Riemsdyk is likely in for Andreas Nodl who was injured on Saturday.
Coaches on the Hotseat … Regier may need to shakeup Sabres … Semin looking for lucrative long-term deal … Audio and Video of Thornton hit
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on November 5th, 2010
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres are off to a 3-8-2 start, GM Darcy Regier has said he doesn’t want to fire coach Lindy Ruff, so it might be roster moves are needed to shake the team up. He’s been working the phones, but not liking the offers. He doesn’t want to give players away, such as Tim Connolly. Connolly is taking heat from fans, and writer Gleason for his turnovers/bad decision making.
- Adrian Dater on Versus: Dater runs through 5 coaches who could be on the Hotseat. Ron Wilson: if the Leafs are out of it at some point this year, it could be Wilson’s last year. Lindy Ruff and Randy Carlyle: both of their GM’s have said their jobs are safe for now. Scott Gordon: after a good start, the Islanders have lost 5 in a row. Todd Richards: he’s under some pressure in Minnesota to win now.
- Cory Masisak of CSN Washington: Alexander Semin signed a 1 year, $6 million deal in the off-season, and will be looking to cash in on a lucrative long-term deal. He’s a UFA at seasons end, the Capitals can’t negotiate with him until after January 1st. Can Washington afford him? They have $36 million committed to 13 players next year.
“I really don’t think [Semin] is focused too much on that,” Gandler said. “From the conversations I’ve had with him, he would rather just play hockey. Obviously it is important and it was important last year. This year the reason Alexander signed a one-year deal was not to become an unrestricted free agent necessarily. It was part of the strategy but only because we didn’t think he could get a long-term deal at the money we thought he should get.”
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: The Atlanta Thrashers lost 3-0 last night in front of only 8,461 fans, their lowest total ever, 2nd record low in the last 15 days.
- Chris Vivlamore via twitter: Scouts from Avs, Sens, Leafs, Coyotes, Canucks, Blackhawks, Lightning, Stars were at the Thrashers-Blue Jackets game. I wonder if they were included in last night’s record low attendance in Atlanta.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Johan Franzen was on the ice yesterday for the Red Wings practice, but figures to be ready for tonight.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Minnesota Wild forward Guillaume Latendresse is now week-to-week with a groin injury.
- Rich Chere via twitter: Zach Parise will be put on IR in the next couple days. Brian Rolston will practice on either Sunday or Monday.
- Globe and Mail Audio: Eric Duhatschek, James Mirtle, and Darren Yourk discuss the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames, and if Jarome Iginla could get traded.
- Puck Daddy Radio: Question of the Day….“Who is the best hitter in the NHL”? (05:00) Sidney Crosby drops the gloves (07:45) Cal Clutterbuck, Minnesota Wild RW (10:30) Bobby Holik (24:00) Puck Headlines (37:30)
- Fan 590 Audio: OHL Commissioner David Branch on Prime Time Sports discuss concussions and the overall safety in the game of hockey.
- Fan 590 Audio: Glen Healy on Prime Time Sports discussing the good and the bad in the hockey world.
- Joe Thornton blindsided David Perron last night, NHL will likely review. If the league is serious about blindsided hits, it will give Thornton a suspension, maybe 2 games. I don’t necessarily think it was a ’2 game’ hit, maybe a 1 game suspension, but it could send a message that all players can get suspended, even the stars.
Crosby still bothered by hip flexor … Theodore to Wild almost done … Flames dropping like flies … Kadri to Marlies almost official
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 2nd, 2010
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby is still being bothered by his hip flexor, he left practice early and did not play in last night’s game. It’s the 2nd time this camp that he’s been bothered by it, and was held out as a precaution. Crosby’s not concerned about it and hopes to play in their last pre-season game on Sunday.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: There is a report from CKAC that the Minnesota Wild are going to sign Jose Theodore to a 1-year, $1 million deal. As of last night, there have been discussion but there hasn’t been confirmation that the deal if done. Reports are that he’ll report to their AHL affiliate until the team returns from Finland. Harding will most likely be put on LTIR.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: The Vancouver Canucks will discuss their final cuts today. They still need to trim about $3 million in cap space off the roster. “I’d by lying if I said the cap wouldn’t come in here to play a little bit,” Vigneault said. “We’ll assess the players tomorrow and come up with the best decisions for the benefit of out team.” Sami Salo and Alex Burrows could be put on LTIR to save some money. The Calgary Flames could be interested in Brendan Morrison, who’s still on a tryout with the Canucks.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Toronto Maple Leafs coach on Nazem Kadri, “I can’t see him being in the (Maple Leafs) lineup opening night.” Kadri said he’d take being sent to the Marlies like a man, “This is the NHL,” he said. “There is no room for crybabies.”
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: The Boston Bruins are still searching for a puck moving defenseman. Matt Huntwick has the potential to fill that role but he’s struggled in camp.
- Darren Millard via twitter: Ales Kotalik and David Moss left Calgary’s game last night versus the Oilers with injuries. Vicki Hall via twitter: She can’t believe she’s saying this, but the Flames could be in trouble if Kotalik’s injury is serious. Centers Matt Stajan and Daymond Langkow are also out with injuries. Jason Botchford via twitter: Brendan Morrison to the Flames has made sense for awhile now.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: One line that has looked good for the St. Louis Blues and will start the season together; David Backes centering David Perron and Brad Boyes. The Blues have moved Backes back to center this year, but still talk that he may be moved back the right side. They like his size down the middle. Matt D’Agostini has taken advantage of Vladimir Sobotka’s injury and may start the season centering the 4th line.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: LA Kings winger Scott Parse still hasn’t skated since injuring his groin in the first pre-season game on Sept. 22nd. Brad Richardson has taken his spot on the 2nd line with Jarret Stoll and Justin Williams. Parse did some off-ice stuff yesterday and felt some tenderness. From Murray, “It’s inflammation only. That has been looked at, and checked out, by our team doctors. It’s a matter of that starting to calm down, with rest and medication and treatments.”
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Victor Stalberg is battling Jeremy Morin for one of the final spots on the Chicago Blackhawks roster. Their roster is at 26 players right now, and the team is deciding if they will go with a 21 or 22 man roster. Stalberg has more NHL experience, 40 games with the Leafs last year. He has 1 assist in 5 games so far this pre-season, compared to Morin’s goal and 2 assists.
Will offer sheets start to come? Rumors surrounding Kovalchuk
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on July 5th, 2010
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: With the lack of depth in the NHL Free Agent market, teams may send out an offer sheets to improve their club. Some possible restricted free agents are Bobby Ryan, Marc Staal, Steve Downie, Sam Gagne, and David Perron. The Boston Bruins are now able to negotiate contract extensions for Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron, both are entering the last year of their contract. Chara is making $7.5 million and would probably be looking for something similar. The Bruins could offer him a front loaded deal to bring down the cap number. Bergeron has a cap number of $4.7 million, and probably would get a deal with a similar number.
- Helene Elliot of the LA Times: The LA Kings could still use a productive winger, and an experienced top 4 defenseman, but with not much remaining in the free agent group, the Kings could turn to trades or possibly an offer sheet.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello continues to pursue Ilya Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk would probably reject any offer below $8 million, and Kings may not have wanted to go over that number. The Devils may not want to go over $8 million as well. The Isles could be offering $10 million for 10 years.
- Tom Gulitti of NorthJersey.com: A report out of Russia said that the Flyers offered Kovalchuk a deal, his Russian agent denied the report that he said that.
- Elliotte Friedman via Twitter: The Kings made their biggest offer to Kovalchuk without jeopardizing Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson extensions.
- Larry Brooks via Twitter: “Kings rule out Kovalchuk. In other news, Yanks refuse to sign A-Rod after he opts out. Oh. Wait.”
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins are thinking about shifting Jordan Staal or Evgeni Malkin over to the wing. The Pens would then need to add a 3rd line center. Potential candidates could be: Rob Niedermayer, Dominic Moore, Jeff Halpern, John Madden, and Ryan Johnson.
- Ryan Rishaug via Twitter: Oilers have inquired about Rob Niedermayer, he’d consider them if offered a contract.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings are in the market for an inexpensive defenseman to play along side Jonathan Ericsson.
Salo out indefinitely … Will the Sens let Volchenkov walk? Detroit’s options
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 10th, 2010
- Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Guys, hold you breath … Sami Salo left night’s game, and is out indefinitely with a suspected ruptured testicle.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings could have a similar look next season. Some teammates and front office people think the Nicklas Lidstrom will be back next season, and the hope is that he’ll do it closer to $6 million rather than his 2009-10 salary of $7.45 million. Tomas Holstrom should receive a contract, and Todd Bertuzzi could get one as well. RFA’s Justin Abdelkader, Darren Helm, Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller should be getting offers as well.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Sun: Warren thinks the Ottawa Senators should not bring back Anton Volchenkov next season. Volchenkov already turned down a contract extension and could be looking at a deal in the 5 year, $22.5 million. If he was to take around $3.5 million, that would be okay, but it sounds like he’s looking for the big payday. The Sens may be willing to let him go.
- Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News: One area the Red Wings may look to improve this off-season is the supporting cast, and overall depth. They could use some toughness, and some extra scoring. They lost a lot of goals before this past year. They probably won’t have the cash to add a big scorer, though there really isn’t much on the free agent list. The Wings could also look at moving Chris Osgood, if another team feels he could be a #1 goalie still, even though he’s 37 years old.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The NY Rangers will look at bringing in a backup goalie, with Martin Biron and Johan Hedberg apparently at the top of Glen Sather’s wish list.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The St. Louis Blues don’t appear to be in a rush to make contract offers to RFAs David Perron and Erik Johnson, talks with both are just beginning . Johnson is not eligible to receive an offer sheet since he missed a year of service with a knee injury. Perron is eligible to receive an offer sheet, and the Blues as an organization are okay with having their RFAs pass the July 1st date if they are not ready to meet the contract demands. Doug Armstrong will be taking over as team GM Larry Pleau on July 1st, and will handling contract negotiations before that. Erik Johnson was the 1st overall pick back in 2008, and will probably be looking for a big deal.
Around the Boards: Habs keeping Halak? Hitchcock safe for now, Gonchar leaving Pens after season? Kessel almost a Blue last season
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 28th, 2009
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News:
- The starting goalie flip-flop in Montreal may have taken place again, with Jaroslav Halak winning 3 consecutive games. Carey Pirce had lost 4 straight decisions. It’s looking like the Canadiens might be keeping Halak.
- Columbus is currently having a franchise worst stretch, 2-11-5, and coach Ken Hitchcock job is safe for at least the time being. Columbus has reportedly been looking to make a few shake-up deals, but have been unsuccessful so far. Team Leadership is something they need.
- This season could be the last for Sergei Gonchar in Pittsburgh unless he’ll take a pay cut. The 36 year old is looking for a 3 to 4 year deal worth between $15 and $20 million. The Pens seem to be fine with the years, but not at $5 million a season. Kris Letang needs a big raise from his current $625,000 salary, and looking for between $3 and $4 million.
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com:
- It’s no secret that the Bruins are looking for scoring, but it probably won’t happen until closer to the deadline. They don’t expect anything in the upcoming weeks, the there is the 2 week Olympic shutdown. Until the Atlanta Trashers-Ilya Kovalchuk contract talks are resolved, you’ll read/hear the Bruins are a possible destination.
- Last season at the trade deadline, the Bruins and Blues were discussing Keith Tkachuk and David Perron for Phil Kessel.
Around the Boards: HNIC Hotstove, Blues Interested in Staal? Stars and Flyers monitoring each other, Burke’s Options
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on December 13th, 2009
- Hockey Night in Canada’s Hotstove Video: LeBrun mentions in the Hotstove that if the Thrashers don’t have Kovalchuk signed to the extension in the next month, they’ll probably look at trading him.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
- Whispers around the league that the St. Louis Blues are interested in Eric Staal and his $8.25 million cap hit (thru 2015-16). Staal has struggled this season and missed some time due to injury. The Blues have plenty of assests to send the other way, such as Alex Pietrangelo, David Perron, and Ian Cole just to name a few.
- The Panthers should have new ownership soon, and their GM is shopping their number 1 goalie, Tomas Vokoun and his $5.7 million cap hit.
- Matt Stajan might be on the move before the Trade Deadline. Though Burke may not want to mess with the chemistry he’s had lately with Phil Kessel. Still he’s never lived up to the expectations in Toronto.
- The Flyers and Stars have apparently been keeping an eye on each other. The Stars are battling for the last playoff spot, and the Flyers have plumetted to the basement of the Eastern Conference. The Stars would like a top 6 forward, maybe Danny Briere (might not waive his no movement clause). The Flyers have interest in 2010 UFA goalie, Marty Turco. I don’t see the Stars moving Turco until they are completely out of it. Jeff Carter’s name may also start appearing in trade talks.
- Brian Burke has tried to get Peter Mueller out of Phoenix, but he doesn’t have the assests to do it.
- Michael Traikos of the National Post: Brian Burke Christmas no trade deadline has passed with no moves, but with the teams recent good play, he finds himself in a bit of situation. Does he trade any of his 10 UFA’s and 5 RFA’s between now and the deadline, or does he play out the season and see what happens. Traikos thinks the Leafs could probably get a 2nd round pick for each of the following FAs, Ponikarovsky, Stajan, Kulemin, White and Toskala. I don’t see any team offering a 2nd a round pick for Toskala. Of those 5 mentioned, I think only Ponikarovsky, Kulemin and White will be back.
