  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Since Tom Gaglardi bought the Stars, GM Joe Nieuwendyk is finding things a little easier:

“What I’m finding now is I can get in on more conversations and at least test the waters more, and we’re doing that,” Nieuwendyk said. “We’re asking and we’re listening, and we’re trying to make sure of every opportunity that’s out there. Then, it’s up to us to make smart decisions.”

  • Barry Davis via twitter: Colby Armstrong confirms he’ll play tonight. John-Michael Liles won’t say he’s 100% playing but he should be back. James Reimer will start in net.

Flames depth allowed them to move Langkow … What if Couturier makes Flyers? Isles looking for D, Kuba? Whitney, Malone expect to be ready for camp

  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Jay Feaster cited the Flames depth where it matters most as one of the reasons he sent center Daymond Langkow to the Coyotes for winger Lee Stempniak. The Flames are going to see if Mikael Backlund can center the top line with Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay. The Flames also have Brendan Morrison, Olli Jokinen and Matt Stajan down the middle. Langkow carries a $4.5 million cap hit this year, Stempniak carries a $1.9 million hit. Niklas Hagman’s time as a Flame could be running short and he may find himself making $3 million in the AHL.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Some think that 2011 1st round pick Sean Couturier could make the Flyers roster, which could create a logjam at center. Down the middle they have Danny Briere, Claude Giroux, Blair Betts, Brayden Schenn and Ben Holmstrom. Michael Nylander is also heading to camp on a tryout.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank suggests that the Islanders could be looking for a veteran defenseman. Warren wonders if the Isles would be interested in Filip Kuba. The Isles are $2.3 million below the salary cap floor. Chris Campoli and Bryan McCabe are free agent defenseman still available.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney injured his surgically repaired right ankle skating earlier this month, but hopes to be ready for the start of training camp. “I rolled over on the foot … caught a rut in the ice. Minor sprain, I think,” said Whitney, “I’ll be back in Edmonton on Saturday. I don’t think it’s serious.”
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Pat Morris, the agent for former Oilers defenseman Steve Staios:

“He’s been training with all the young players at Matt Nichols’ camp in Toronto. I really think Steve could help a young team like the Islanders or Colorado (Avalanche). He played 23 of the last 27 games for Calgary last season, was an even-or plus-player in 18 of those games and had eight points.”

  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning winger Ryan Malone had surgery in July to repair some damage from the shoulder separation he suffered in first round of the playoffs.

“It was just kind of nagging, so I went to get it looked at it and it was still kind of separated so we had to go get it fixed,” Malone said. “After the season there was still all the swelling so after everything went down, that’s when we found some other stuff that had to be taken care of.”

Initial reports were saying he would miss up to 6 months, but Malone said he expects to be ready for the season opener on Oct. 7th. Malone hasn’t been cleared for contact and likely won’t before the start of camp.

  • Lindsay Applebaum of the Washington Post: Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun wants to go out and enjoy playing hockey. He was disappointed with the offers he got in early July, including the 3 year offer from the Panthers.

“It was something I was looking at as, you know, I want to enjoy hockey. I want to play in playoffs,” Vokoun said Monday. “It’s been really tough for me. I lost four years. I’ve been sitting every summer here in South Florida, which I love, in the afternoons swimming in the pool, and by 7:30 at night I put on the TV and watch playoff hockey every single year. If you care and love playing hockey, it’s not an easy thing to do.”

  • Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Mikael Samuelsson, who had surgery last May, is back on the ice and is feeling stronger in the groin and hip area. He had abductor-tendon and sports hernia surgery, and began training in July.
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: “I don’t know about you, but if I had Drew Doughty on my team, I’d do everything to make sure he was signed, happy, and ready to lead my Los Angeles Kings team. The last thing I’d want is to drag my franchise player through the negotiating mud all summer with no contract agreed to with three weeks until training camp.”

Rypien didn’t have alcohol/drug issues … Alfie skates … Nothing new on Yashin … Hiller hopes to be ready for camp … Jackets and Flames notes

  • Jason Botchford via twitter: Canucks GM Mike Gillis said that when he was with the Canucks, Rick Rypien’s issues were never alcohol or drug related and that he was even reluctant to take anything prescribed.
  • Rob Brodie of OttawaSenators.com: Daniel Alfredsson skated yesterday for the 1st times since having back surgery in June.

“It felt good to be back on the ice today,” he said afterward. “I was on for maybe an hour, an hour and 20 (minutes), did some drills and played a little bit of a scrimmage. It was fun. I was tired, but everything held up well and the back felt fine.”

Alfredsson hasn’t played in a game since February 7th. He hopes to be ready for the start of training camp in September. He’ll be back out skating on Thursday.

  • James O’Brien of Pro Hockey Talk: Jonas Hiller hopes to be ready to the start of training camp.

“Of course I know I still have to get some ice-training and I have to work hard towards it. But that is something that you do every year. And for that I am here in Switzerland. This is what I’m working towards. And then, I believe, that I’m going to be ready come training camp and the season. And the All-Star game is certainly a goal again.”

  • Tom Reed via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson likes to award contract extensions to players leading up to the season. Think Antoine Vermette, Derek Dorsett, and Steve Mason. (He mentions Rostislav Klesla, but he was traded to Phoenix last year).
  • Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames GM on Daymond Langkow after he missed 78 games with a fractured vertebra:

“One of the guys who has consistently been at the training sessions is Daymond,” Feaster said. “He was fully cleared at the end of the season. He’s been fully training. No restrictions whatsoever

“He’s ready to go when camp opens.”

Feaster on Brendan Morrison who had surgery in April to repair a torn ACL:

“The big thing we’re going to have to do with him is to make sure he doesn’t overdo it,” Feaster said. “He’s pushing to be ready for camp, and our point to him is to follow what the doctors are telling him and make sure he’s fully healed.

“But he’s progressing very, very nicely. He’s very happy and so is the medical staff.”

Kopitar to have surgery tomorrow … Hamhuis could be out week or longer … Green skates, Arnott practices … Glencross could get a nice raise, maybe not in Calgary

  • Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Anze Kopitar will have surgery on his ankle/leg on Wednesday and is likely done for the year, even if they go deep in the playoffs. There was torn ligaments caused by the ankle sprain.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis could be out a week or longer after suffering his 2nd concussion of the year, 4th in his career. He was able to fly with the team to Nashville, watch practice, and planned on going out for dinner with former teammates. Things he may not have been able to do if his symptoms were bad. Mikael Samuelsson won’t play tonight but is possible for Thursday. Alex Edler and Andrew Alberts are expected to skate on Thursday as they begin to get ready for a playoff return. Tanner Glass is day-to-day with a rib injury.
  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green skated in full pads for 25 minutes yesterday, but still hasn’t had a full skate with teammates. He’s feeling better but still experiencing some symptoms, and hopes to practice in a week.

“Here and there, but nothing that’s progressing to get worse — it’s always getting better,” Green said. “We’ve done a great job here with the trainers and the staff of taking the right procedures for me to get better. The unfortunate part is that it does take time. It’s nice to get a good skate and hopefully now I can get back on the ice and back playing with the team.”

“I think it would be good” to get several practices in first, Green said. “I think it’s going to take some time to get back in shape. I haven’t skated for a long time. I’ll skate by myself here and hopefully get some practices in with the team and get comfortable again. I don’t want to rush into the game too much. I haven’t played for a while. I want to be in the best shape possible here going into the playoffs.”

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Jason Arnott took part in full practice yesterday. He’s missed the last 6 games with a lower-body injury. “After a day off, it’s a little rough, but not too bad,” Arnott said, before addressing whether he would be able to play on Tuesday against Carolina. “We’ll see how it responds today and go out in the morning skate tomorrow and then we’ll see.” A end of the week return may be the most likely “I think so. We got some good skates while the team [was] gone. We’ll just have to see how it goes.”
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Francis thinks that Curtis Glencross could triple his $1.2 million salary on the open market this year. He now has 23 goals while bringing toughness and has penalty killing ability. Calgary may not be able to afford him now, especially with Daymond Langkow and his $4.5 million salary have received clearance to return. Langkow’s return may also force out Brendan Morrison as he’ll be looking for a raise on his $725,000 salary.
  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Jordan Leopold’s appointment with a hand specialist was postponed because he came down with the flu. Leopold broke his hand on Friday, and if he’ll be able to return for the playoffs could depend on if he needs surgery or not.

Sunday Morning NHL Rumor Round Up – Part 1

  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The Senators and Chris Phillips will continue to talk today, both sides will need to figure out if the gap can be closed. If it’s decided that he won’t be re-signing, options are for him to waive his no trade clause, or finish out the year with the Sens. Garrioch thinks it’s going to be an 11th hour decision. Darren Dreger adds that if the Senators offer just over $3 million for 3 years, Phillips would take it.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: From a Dean Lombardi (Kings GM) text, “Brayden Schenn is not going anywhere,” The Kings are still looking at Ales Hemsky and Brad Richards. Andrei Loktionov who was possible trade bait injured his shoulder and could be done for the year. The Colorado Avalanche told the Calgary Sun that they won’t trade Paul Stastny. Adam Foote and Milan Hejduk will be staying as well. Canucks GM Mike Gillis confirmed that he won’t be trading Cory Schneider or Cody Hodgson. He’ll be looking for a 3rd-4th liner, not a defenseman, John Maddon isn’t a fit due to salary. The Flames are looking for a depth defenseman. Agent Pat Brisson on Sidney Crosby, “We don’t know if it’s two weeks, two months or five months.” Jim Vandermeer and Ladislav Smid are more likely to move than Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky.
  • David Pagnotta via twitter: “Take it for what it’s worth… but Kings GM Dean Lombardi says he won’t trade Brayden Schenn.”
  • Detroit Free Press: ESPN reported that there was some chatter that the  Red Wings were interested in Zach Bogosian. Wings GM Ken Holland said he has never talked to Atlanta.
  • Daniel Tolensky via twitter: Tolensky is surprised that Patrick Elias rumors haven’t come up at all, and that he’d look good beside Kopitar.
  • Jim Morris of the Globe and Mail: The Canucks won’t be making a big deal. “I don’t think we have any glaring deficiencies,” Gillis said Saturday, “We think we did a fairly good job and our record seems to indicate we’ve done a good job. Sometimes at the trade deadline you simply don’t have the opportunity to do things. If there is something we can do to improve our team now, it if comes our way and it makes sense, we’re going to do it.” They may look to add one of Marty Reasoner (FLA), Rob Niedermayer (BUF), Chris Neil (OTT) or Cody McLeod (COL).
  • Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames winger Niklas Hagman has the flu but should be good for today. Tim Jackman has an upper body injury from a fight with Ryane Clowe and is day-to-day. Daymond Langkow is progressing and is taking part in light workouts.

Parise visits doctors today … Ballard to return tonight? 10 teams looking for Dmen … New Leaf lines … Langkow’s return 50-50?

  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Zach Parise will see a doctor today to find out how serious his lower body injury is. Parise said he originally suffered the injury in his summer training while skating. “It’s been bothering me,” he told me. “I know exactly when I hurt it. I hurt it in August and it’s been bothering me. It hasn’t gone away. I kind of hurt it every game.”
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Keith Ballard made it through weekend practices with the Vancouver Canucks and could return Monday night. He will likely be a game time decision according to Vigneault. Dan Hamhuis skated for 20 minutes yesterday but still felt some discomfort in his foot. Ryan Parent left yesterday’s practice early with a groin strain.
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Daniel Briere has a hearing via conference call scheduled for today at 10am regarding his stick work to the head on Saturday night (video of incident can be seen in yesterday’s post). Briere has 8 instances since 2005 where he received a warning, fine or suspension according to John Shannon.
  • Bruce Garrioch in the Toronto Sun: There may be as many as 10 teams looking for defenseman, including the Senators, Lightning, Kings and Sharks. The Senators are dangling Brian Lee. The Ducks have said they’d trade Paul Mara. The Oilers have Sheldon Souray and his broken hand. Kevin Bieksa will likely become available by the Canucks at some point when their defensive corps gets healthy. The city of Glendale and Matthew Hulsizer are still working on the details of the lease. Glendale will cover some of the losses from the Coyotes but only if he won’t move the team. If he moves the team within 5 years, they’ll want their money back. The Dallas Stars are averaging under 14,000 fans a game and may have to deal Brad Richards before the deadline; “They might have to do it to save cash, but that just doesn’t make sense to me,” said one league executive. “They’ve got a chance to have a pretty good team. They should be trying to add, not subtract.” The New Jersey Devils have been fielding calls regarding Patrick Elias, but he has a no-movement clause with 2 years left on his contract and would likely want to stay with the Devils. The Phoenix Coyotes are trying to move Petr Prucha and his $1.1 million salary.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: It may be 50-50 chance that Calgary Flames center Daymond Langkow is able to return from a neck injury he sustained last year. He was shut down last week after feeling numbness below the waist during an intensive workout.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs are looking for some more scoring from the lineup, have juggled the lines yesterday at practice. Mike Brown – Kris Versteeg – Tim Brent, Luca Caputi – Phil Kessel – Tyler Bozak, Mikhail  and Nikolai Kulemin – Clarke MacArthur – Grabovski, and Fredrik Sjostrom  – Colton Orr – Christian Hanson.
  • Eric Francis in the Toronto Sun: The Calgary Flames could move Ian White at some point this season. White will be a UFA at season’s end, with the signing of Mark Giordano to a long term deal and the emergence of TJ Brodie, White could be expendable if they are out of the playoff race.
  • Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Carlo Colaiacovo’s return to the Blues lineup is not known after taking a hit from Jordan Tootoo last week. He’s still experience neck spasms and will have to undergo further tests.

Crosby still bothered by hip flexor … Theodore to Wild almost done … Flames dropping like flies … Kadri to Marlies almost official

  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby is still being bothered by his hip flexor, he left practice early and did not play in last night’s game. It’s the 2nd time this camp that he’s been bothered by it, and was held out as a precaution. Crosby’s not concerned about it and hopes to play in their last pre-season game on Sunday.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: There is a report from CKAC that the Minnesota Wild are going to sign Jose Theodore to a 1-year, $1 million deal. As of last night, there have been discussion but there hasn’t been confirmation that the deal if done. Reports are that he’ll report to their AHL affiliate until the team returns from Finland. Harding will most likely be put on LTIR.
  • Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: The Vancouver Canucks will discuss their final cuts today. They still need to trim about $3 million in cap space off the roster. “I’d by lying if I said the cap wouldn’t come in here to play a little bit,” Vigneault said. “We’ll assess the players tomorrow and come up with the best decisions for the benefit of out team.” Sami Salo and Alex Burrows could be put on LTIR to save some money. The Calgary Flames could be interested in Brendan Morrison, who’s still on a tryout with the Canucks.
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Toronto Maple Leafs coach on Nazem Kadri, “I can’t see him being in the (Maple Leafs) lineup opening night.” Kadri said he’d take being sent to the Marlies like a man, “This is the NHL,” he said. “There is no room for crybabies.”
  • James Murphy of ESPN Boston: The Boston Bruins are still searching for a puck moving defenseman. Matt Huntwick has the potential to fill that role but he’s struggled in camp.
  • Darren Millard via twitter: Ales Kotalik and David Moss left Calgary’s game last night versus the Oilers with injuries. Vicki Hall via twitter: She can’t believe she’s saying this, but the Flames could be in trouble if Kotalik’s injury is serious. Centers Matt Stajan and Daymond Langkow are also out with injuries. Jason Botchford via twitter: Brendan Morrison to the Flames has made sense for awhile now.
  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: One line that has looked good for the St. Louis Blues and will start the season together; David Backes centering David Perron and Brad Boyes. The Blues have moved Backes back to center this year, but still talk that he may be moved back the right side. They like his size down the middle. Matt D’Agostini has taken advantage of Vladimir Sobotka’s injury and may start the season centering the 4th line.
  • Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: LA Kings winger Scott Parse still hasn’t skated since injuring his groin in the first pre-season game on Sept. 22nd. Brad Richardson has taken his spot on the 2nd line with Jarret Stoll and Justin Williams. Parse did some off-ice stuff yesterday and felt some tenderness. From Murray, “It’s inflammation only. That has been looked at, and checked out, by our team doctors. It’s a matter of that starting to calm down, with rest and medication and treatments.”
  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Victor Stalberg is battling Jeremy Morin for one of the final spots on the Chicago Blackhawks roster. Their roster is at 26 players right now, and the team is deciding if they will go with a 21 or 22 man roster. Stalberg has more NHL experience, 40 games with the Leafs last year. He has 1 assist in 5 games so far this pre-season, compared to Morin’s goal and 2 assists.

Staal-Rangers by Friday? Nash to RW? New captains in Mon and Van plus more NHL rumors

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers and Marc Staal continue to work towards a deal that could happen by the start of training camp on Friday. The contract they are working on could be longer than 4 years. The Rangers own his rights for 4 years (would be a restricted free agent), so going over 4 years the Rangers would have to spend a bit more money to buy back some of his unrestricted free agent years. Comparisons could be Shea Weber ($4.5 million), Ryan Suter ($3.5 million) and Brent Seabrook ($3.5 million), though none of those deals bought in to the UFA years.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: The New Jersey Devils can appeal the League’s decision by going to the NHL Board of Governors.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Roberto Luongo gave up the Canucks team captaincy, with possibly Henrik Sedin taking over the duties. Ryan Kesler is also an option for the team.
  • Aaron Portzline via twitter: Rick Nash will start training camp on right wing, but coach Scott Arniel said not to read into much in the first couple days of camp.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Vesa Toskala turned down a deal from the Calgary Flames earlier this summer that would have paid over $1 million. He turned it down as he wants to a number 1 goalie. A Swedish team had interest in him, but the asking price was too high. Other European options are available.
  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks have invited Peter Schaefer to training camp. Schaefer was bought out by the Bruins before last season. He’ll battle for a 3rd – 4th line spot.
  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Daymond Langkow hasn’t been fully cleared for the Calgary Flames training camp. Langkow has been recovering for over 5 months from a fractured vertebrae at the base of his neck after being hit with a puck.
  • Toronto Sun: The Canadian government may not put up the roughly $180 million needed for a NHL arena in Quebec City. Prime Minister Steven Harper said there are other NHL and CFL teams that are looking for some money. “We’re all fans of professional sports, we know they’re important to our communities,” Harper said. “But professional sports are first and foremost the responsibility of the private sector.”
  • Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier has been under fire from fans and media this summer. The trading of Jaroslav Halak didn’t sit well with some, and the QMJHL commissioner said the Canadiens “don’t take the scouting and signing of Quebec-born players seriously enough.” Andrei Markov and Brian Gionta are the leading candidates to be the teams next captain. Lars Ellar (brought over in the Halak trade) and PK Subban could crack the lineup. The Canadiens have 20 players on 1-way contracts.

Flyers interested in Bobby Ryan … Leafs looking for a defenseman

  • Jimmy Murphy via Twitter: “Nonsense” Kings source on the Kings trading for Marc Savard so they can sign Kovalchuk.
  • Tim Panaccio via Twitter: Rumors that the Philadelphia Flyers are trying to clear salary cap room not for a goalie, but for Bobby Ryan.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto Maple Leafs could be looking to add a free agent defenseman. It’s not known at the moment who they’re interested in. If Burke wants size there’s Andy Sutton and Willie Mitchell. If it’s skill and powerplay help maybe Marc-Andre Bergeron. Shot blocking could be Jay McKee. Savy could be Shaone Morrisonn, Freddy Meyer, Mike Mottau, Mike Weaver. If a team interested in acquiring Kaberle offered him an extension, they may be more likely to meet the Leafs asking price. Now that most of big name free agents have signed, things may pick up on Kaberle.
  • Mark Spector from Sportsnet.ca: Kevin Bieksa has fallen out of Canucks coach Alain Vigneault good books, and that is why he is on the trading block and not Christian Ehrhoff and Sami Salo, who both are also making $3 million plus and in the last year of their contract. Calgary Flames center Daymond Langkow’s neck injury has not responded well, and is not as far along in the rehab as they had hoped. Could one of the reasons they brought Ollie Jokinen back (I still laugh everytime I read/write that Sutter signed Jokinen).

Savard still being shopped … Spezza not going anywhere … Lightning interested in Kaberle

  • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: The Bruins are fine with having centers Savard, Krejci, Bergeron and Seguin in their line up next year, but they will continue to shop Marc Savard and his 7 year, $28 million contract. Savard doesn’t have a full no trade clause, but he has a modified one where he provided a list of 5 teams he would go to. There was a rumor that the Bruins and Wild were talking about a deal, Brent Burns was the main piece coming from Minnesota.
  • Mike Russo via Twitter: Sources telling Russo that the Wild are not interested in Savard, and that he wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause to go to Minny.
  • Joe Haggerty via Twitter: Sources say Savard would okay a trade to Chicago, Ottawa, and Toronto but the problem is those teams don’t appear to want him.
  • Eric Duhatschek via Twitter: The Flames could offer Robyn Regehr and maybe Daymond Langkow for Jason Spezza. Langkow has one year left on his contract.
  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Despite many rumors circulating that the Blackhawks are shopping Kris Versteeg, GM Stan Bowman said that they don’t have to trade him.
  • The Globe and Mail: The Maple Leafs had an uneventful 1st round round. They tried to trade up, and listened to 4 offers, but in the end they ending up getting nothing done. “Obviously we got offers on Tomas that didn’t meet our standard,” Burke said. “We tried to get into the card game here in the first round, we tried a couple things to get a first-rounder that did not involve Tomas but weren’t successful. That’s the way it goes sometimes.”
  • Erik Erlendsson via Twitter: The Tampa Bay Lightning may be in on Tomas Kaberle, but would have to send some salary the other way to make this happen.
