NHL rumors involving Sabres, Predators, Penguins, Jets, Blackhawks, and Parise … Injury notes on Markstrom, Giordano and Morrison

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: If the struggling Sabres make a trade, center Derek Roy is leading the rumor mill.

“It’s fine. It’s whatever people say,” Roy said. “You can’t worry about it and do anything about it. You have to go out and play your game. Everyone here is trying to do their job, whether it’s stopping the puck, playing defense and scoring goals. We all have to do our part.

The Ducks were said to be looking at Roy and Drew Stafford back in November when GM Bob Murray was in town. Roy has one more year at $5.5 million but a $4 million cap hit. Roy is currently battling a shoulder injury, that originally happened in training camp. Sabres GM Darcy Regier said last Friday that no deal was imminent, but he is talking to teams. On the injury side, Andrej Sekera skated for the 1st time since his Dec. 28th upper-body injury. Tyler Ennis and his ankle injury remain off ice.

  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators GM David Poile on Ryan Suter:

“Our first and foremost goal is to sign Ryan. We’ve been trying to do that all season long. I’ve not accomplished that to this point, but we’re hoping to continue discussions and get that done at some point. We’ll be prepared, if we feel that we weren’t going to be able to sign Ryan, and if we thought we were in a position that we had to or should trade him. I’m certainly hoping that doesn’t happen, I don’t want that to happen, but I want to be prepared for that.”

  • Craig Custance of ESPN: With all the injuries the Penguins have, they could turn to the Ducks. It wouldn’t take much to get Niklas Hagman. Jason Blake is in the final year of his $4 million deal and could be dealt, though it may not be the best use of cap space for the Pens. The Oilers are looking for a young defenesman in return for Ales Hemsky. Hurricanes Tuomo Ruutu may be the best option for the Penguins.
  • Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff:

“We’re in the same situation as many teams,” Cheveldayoff said after 41 games have yielded a record of 20-16-5 for his team. “We’re always looking to see what’s available out there.

“We’re always having conversations but to the extent that someone’s ready to pull the trigger, those things really aren’t planned. They evolve.

“Sometimes the opportunities present themselves and you feel you have to act. But there haven’t been any of those come up yet. To say when and where, that’s hard to speculate.”

  • Rich Chere via twitter: Devils winger Zach Parise said that money is definitely important but the most important thing for him is a chance to win.
  • Harry Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: Panthers goalie Jacob Markstrom’s knee injury may be more serious that originally thought, and he’ll be getting a 2nd opinion today. “It’s not great news. We’ll have more information tomorrow,” he said. “It’s going to be a little while before he’s back in the swing of things. Unfortunately, my own prognosis yesterday was inaccurate.”
  • John Down of the Calgary Herald: Flames defenseman Mark Giordano practiced yesterday for the 1st time since tearing his hamstring on Nov. 29th. Giordano said: “pretty close to normal, if not normal.” “I’d still like to see Gio get into some practices here over the week,” said coach Brent Sutter. “I think we’ll be closer with him come (Thursday) and see where he is at that point in time and, if not, you’d think by the weekend.” Brendan Morrison also practiced yesterday. D Derek Smith, D Scott Hannan, C Matt Stajan, LW Alex Tanguay, C/W David Moss and G Henrik Karlsson are on the IR.

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin and forward JF Jacques will have hearings at 4 and 5 pm today.
  • Edmonton Oilers via twitter: The Oilers have put forward Gilbert Brule on re-entry waivers. Magnus Paajarvi and Ryan O’Marra have been recalled.
  • Dave Moninari via twitter: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang skated hard today. It doesn’t mean he’ll be in the lineup soon, but it’s a positive sign.

NHLPA rejects realignment … No big changes in Buffalo are imminent … Stars could deal Grossman … Roy injured … Huselius to IR

  • Darren Dreger via twitter: The NHLPA rejects realignment for next season, the jets will stay in the Southeast. Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The Players are not a fan of one conference have 14 teams and the other 16, a better chance of playoffs for the one conference. Darren Dreger via twitter: Dreger warns us to get ready for a brawl between the NHL and NHLPA in the upcoming months. Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The NHL could file a grievance against the NHLPA if they feel they can prove the union unreasonably withheld consent.
  • Craig Custance of ESPN: There will be plenty of teams calling about Ducks Bobby Ryan, who is the most likely of the ‘big 3′ to get dealt. The Red Wings, Maple Leafs and Sabres are expected to busy on the trade front, but pretty much every team would be intereted.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres GM Darcy Regier said after their 7 loss in 9 games that no big changes are imminent.

“At this time of the year and where we are, I’ve done a lot of talking to teams around the league, so I’m aware of some of those situations,” Regier said. “Right now there’s nothing imminent, and that’s part of the business. We’ll keep working.”

“I wouldn’t call it a shake-up,” Regier said. “If there’s a move that makes sense for us, we’ll do it if something is going to improve our hockey club. There’s nothing imminent, as I said, right now.”

“Without specific rumors, there’s truth to those rumors,” Regier said. “But the price right now, and I think things will build between now and the trade deadline. I think teams that are going to be sellers are going to try and maximize what they can get for what they are selling. I think that will build as we get closer to the trade deadline.”

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Mailbag: The Stars have a decision to make with Nicklas Grossman. If they don’t sign him to an extension before the trade deadline, they could trade him for an offensive player.
  • John Vogl via twitter: Sabres center Derek Roy suffered an upper-body injury and left last night’s game.
  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning forwards Adam Hall and JT Wyman suffered upper-body injuries on Thursday. Brett Connolly is returning to the team. Ryan Malone has missed 2 games with a lower-body injury is day-to-day but seems ready. With the addition of Brendan Mikkelson, the Lightning have sent Evan Oberg to the AHL.
  • Blue Jackets via twitter: Blue Jackets forward Kristian Huselius has been placed on the IR. He’s week to week with a lower body injury.

Ducks in the rumor mill … Subban-Plekanec drop the gloves … RNH injures shoulder … Carcillo could face suspension

  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Talk about what Teemu Selanne will do has already surfaced as the Ducks have struggled with a 10-21-6 record.

“I’ve read some stories in the papers too about what the situation could be,” said Selanne, who took the day off for maintenance. ”To be honest, I haven’t really thought about that too much. I still believe that we can make the playoffs. I don’t want to think about that thing before we’re out.

“So right now, I just think I’m going to be here. That’s the only goal I have right now. Right now, I can’t see that happening. The focus is still do the job here now and see how it goes. A lot of work to do. It’s a big challenge right now.”

Ducks GM Bob Murray may look to see what he can get for the few tradable assets he has. Bobby Ryan has already been on the trade block and Ryan Getzlaf’s name has crept into the rumor mill lately. GM Murray has already said that Selanne is retiring a Duck.

  • Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: It’s sounding like the Sabres could be shopping some players in effort to turn their season around. Coach Lindy Ruff’s job is safe. The Sabres sit in 11th spot, but they don’t need to blow up their roster. Derek Roy, Drew Stafford, Paul Gaustad and Ryan Miller haven’t lived up to expectations or their contracts.
  • TSN:  Canadiens P.K. Subban and Tomas Plekanec dropped the gloves at yesterday’s practice. No big bombs were landed and both players resumed practicing afterwards. “It’s nothing personal between me and P.K., it’s about the team and to realize we have to start playing as a team,” said Plekanec. “Those things happen.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers winger Jaromir Jagr took himself out of yesterday’s Winter Classic after he was speared in the calf. “It was swelling and getting worse and worse in my leg,” Jagr said. “I just couldn’t skate hard and I didn’t want to just be [on the ice] to be there. I knew at that point I couldn’t help my teammates.”
  • Craig Custance of ESPN: Custance list 10 candidates for next year’s Winter Classic and beyond: 1. Detroit 2. Washington 3. New York 4. Minnesota 5. Toronto 6. Chicago 7. Colorado 8 Columbus 9. Green Bay 10. Las Vegas
  • Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward David Booth hopes to return to the lineup by Jan. 9th against the Panthers. Booth has skated for 3 straight days, but only for 15 minutes. Booth has been out with a sprained knee ligament since Dec. 6th. Defenseman Aaron Rome also skated but is still a ways from returning.
  • Blackshawks Dan Carcillo’s hit on Oilers Tom Gilbert. This will definitely be looked by the league, and a suspension is likely. What do you think?

Sunday morning rumor roundup … Giroux and Bryzgalov leave last night’s game early … Richards updates

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Canadiens made a desperate move in acquiring Tomas Kaberle, and if doesn’t work, it could cost GM Pierre Gauthier his job. Capitals GM George McPhee has been trying to make a move to shake up their team. They’d love to move Alexander Semin but “there is no market for a struggling, underachieving winger making too much money these days.” Don’t expect the Martin Brodeur to be a rental player. If the Bruins don’t re-sign Chris Kelly, who’ll be a UFA at seasons end, the Senators could be interested. After Brian Burke’s extended Christmas roster freeze, the Maple Leafs could be looking for help down the middle as Tim Connolly has been struggling with injuries. Blue Jackets Derick Brassard could interest them, and GM Scott Howson was spotted at Marlies game. The Kings are working the phones trying to make a move, and they’d love to move Dustin Penner.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers forward Claude Giroux was held out of the 3rd period last on precautionary measure after taking a hit to the head. Giroux was examined by a doctor last night and was feeling better. He’ll be re-evaluated this morning. GM Paul Holmgren on if Giroux has headaches: “not really headaches. This was really just precautionary at this stage.” Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov left the game with 13:01 left in the 3rd. “It was starting to bother me more and more during the game and we decided to be safe,” he said. Holmgren and Bryzgalov don’t think he’ll be sidelined.
  • Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: With Avalanche struggling, coach Joe Sacco and GM Greg Sherman could be on their way out if things don’t improve. Gleason thinks the Sabres should call about center Paul Stastny. They could offer up a Derek Roy or Drew Stafford and Andrej Sekera in a package for Stastny. Oilers have had Sam Gagner available all year, and they’re willing to listen to offers for Ales Hemsky, but teams aren’t lining up for either.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Red Wings have about $5.6 million in salary cap space, and could use another Top 6-9 forward, as well as a veteran defenseman. Wings GM Ken Holland has been a Ales Hemsky fan, who’ll be a UFA at seasons end.
  • Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Kings center Mike Richards might join the Kings at some point on their 9 game road trip. He skated briefly on Friday, and continues off-ice workouts.

Bickell out 6-8 weeks … Roy may not be back … Rangers notes … Nabokov to World’s to increase value … Kings could be in on Richards

  • The Globe and Mail: Blackhawks winger Bryan Bickell will be out for the remainder of the season after having surgery to repair a lacerated tendon he suffered in Game 2. He’ll be out 6-8 weeks. “While the surgery was anticipated since the injury occurred, Bryan wanted to play as long as possible before time ran out to complete the procedure appropriately,” Blackhawks team physician Dr. Michael Terry said in a release Monday.
  • Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News: Sabres coach Lindy Ruff  backtracked a bit when it comes to Derek Roy’s status for Game 7, “I don’t even know if he’s playing yet,” Ruff said when asked what he expected from Roy tonight. “So I don’t know what to expect.”
  • Jeff Klein of NY Times: It sounds like Rangers coach John Tortorella may not see much of future for Chris Drury, Vinny Prospal and Sean Avery, “Tortorella said that Drury and Prospal were “getting older.” Of Avery he said, “I don’t know where it sits.” Tortorella added that the Rangers would “explore all avenues” to give Marian Gaborik some scoring help, presumably Brad Richards. Drury missed 58 games this season, had 5 points, and has a $7 million cap hit next year. “You have to make decisions on what’s best for the organization,” Tortorella said. “This is something honestly we have to look at as far as where does he fit now.”
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks thinks the Rangers need to bring in some “talented impact players” to take the team to the next level. They have a good core with Callahan, Dubinsky and Staal. “The time, though, is coming when the Rangers will have to consider packaging three young assets for one young, All-Star caliber player either in need of a change or who might have a contract issue. Three from Column B for one from Column A. That’s not a maybe.” Henrik Lundqvist will also be turning 30, “To be a great team, when you have an opportunity, you need to grab it. And when you’re older you really need to grab it because you don’t know when there’s another opportunity.”There is a risk/reward for bringing in Brad Richards on a longer term deal as he is 31 and coming off a concussion.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Islanders “tolled” Evgeni Nabokov’s contract, and will allow him to play in the World Championships, and if he has a good tournament the Isles could put him on the trading block. The LA Kings could be a serious player for Brad Richards on July 1st. Richards and Joe Nieuwendyk did meet last week, but with the ownership still up in the air it’s looking likely he’ll be testing the market. The Kings didn’t give much thought to starting Jonathan Bernier on Saturday over Jonathan Quick, as they may have been concerned with the emotional damage that might have occurred if they lost while he was on the bench. Ron MacLean pointed out how much it affected Cary Price a few years ago in the follow season. Kyle Wellwood has played well in San Jose, and they may consider bringing him back.

Columbus wouldn’t mind moving to East … Could Malkin return this year? Derek Roy could be back for Game 7

  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Columbus Blue Jackets have brought up the idea of moving to the Eastern Conference. It’s not likely to happen anytime soon, if at all. A team from the East would have to move to West, likely due to relocation. Phoenix moving to Winnipeg wouldn’t change anything, nor would a team team relocating to Quebec City. The Board of Governors would also have to be convinced. It’s been rumored that the Red Wings could be the first team to switch Conferences if the option becomes available.
  • Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins center Evgeni Malkin and coach Dan Bylsma haven’t ruled out his return during the playoffs. Malkin is at about 9 weeks into his 4-6 month rehab.

“He’s doing well, he’s working hard, but getting on the ice for him right now is really more to get his skates on, test the ice,” Bylsma said. “It’s not really part of rehab or part of him getting back into game shape. It’s part of his rehab, so it’s good for him to be getting on the ice. Again, that’s nine weeks into a long haul for Geno. He’s been working hard. He’s been working diligent. Getting on the ice is probably more for his mindset than it is to get him ready for a practice situation or anything to that accord.”

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers still haven’t named a starting goalie for this afternoon’s game (3 pm). Chris Pronger took some shots at yesterday’s practice and is a game time decision.
  • Brian Hamilton and Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Blackhawks hope to have Brent Seabrook back in the lineup today. He didn’t skate with the top 6 defenseman at practice yesterday and will likely need to pass a ‘fitness test’ before he’s given clearance to play.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Sabres have recalled Matt Ellis to replace the injured Jason Pominville. Brad Boyes was shifted to center. Derek Roy is very close to returning and he could return for a Game 7.  “Derek is very close, very close,” Ruff said. “I would put him in a category of within days. Jochen Hecht is a matter of days, too. Help is on its way.”
  • Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove: Glen Healy mentions that if the Coyotes were to relocate to Winnipeg, they’d ask Shane Doan if he’d want to come. If he doesn’t, they’d look to trade him, to a team “like LA.”
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons can’t see the Bruins or any other team that excited about signing Tomas Kaberle, “If he ever was a prominent player, he isn’t one anymore.” Ilya Bryzgalov isn’t first person who doesn’t want to play in Winnipeg, Zybnek Michalek choose Pittsburgh with one of the reason’s being he didn’t want to move to Winnipeg if the team relocated.
  • Sarah McLellan of hte Arizona Republic: Ilya Bryzgalov’s best bet may be to re-sign with the Coyotes. His playoffs likely cost him some money. “A $1-1.5 million raise from his $4.5 million salary this season is fair and puts him right under the $6 million range enjoyed by the game’s most successful goalies.” Getting Keith Yandle’s contract settle soon would be the best for the organization. Yandle could receive an offer sheet this summer. He’ll be getting a big raise from the $1.3 million he made this season.

Crosby gets clearance to practice with teammates … Miller to sit for Sabres … Roy hopes for 2nd round … Parise hopes for Saturday

  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby has been cleared by doctors to begin practicing with teammates tomorrow morning. He will travel with the team to Florida. He’ll still need to get clearance from doctors before he’s able to get back in a game.
  • John Giannone via twitter: Jonas Enroth in net for the Sabres as Ryan Miller has an upper-body injury. Took an heavy Dion Phaneuf slap shot last night.
  • Mike Harrington via twitter: Derek Roy: “Today I took a big step, started skating hard and got my heart rate up.” He is aiming for the 2nd round if the Sabres make it that far.
  • Rich Chere via twitter: Zach Parise is looking to be in the Devils lineup on Saturday against the Canadiens. Tom Gulitti via twitter: Zach Parise, “I think I need a couple more practices. I wasn’t ready quite ready to go tonight, so we decided to wait a couple more days.”
  • USCHO via twitter: Hobey Baker finalists: Boston College’s Cam Atkinson, North Dakota’s Matt Frattin, Miami’s Andy Miele.

Roy could be return this year … Sens want to re-sign Anderson … Canucks UFA Dmen … Lou hoping for Parise return

  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres center, Derek Roy, out since Dec. 23rd with a torn quad, could return this season. Though he may not be ready until mid-May, if the Sabres made it deep into round 2 or the conference finals, he could return.
  • Darren Dreger of TSN: The Senators are interested in re-signing Craig Anderson, but he may want to see how the restructing in Ottawa goes before committing. Robin Lehner will be given the opportunity to make the team next year, but may spend most of the year in the AHL.
  • Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Kevin Bieksa, Christian Ehrhoff, Sami Salo and Andrew Alberts will all be UFAs for the Vancouver Canucks after the season. They have Dan Hamhuis, Keith Ballard, Alex Edler and Aaron Rome signed for next year at a cap hit of $12.7 million. They may look at signing either Bieksa or Ehrhoff (Ehrhoff more likely) for around $5 million on a long term deal, and possibly Salo on a shorter term, less money deal. If either Bieksa or Ehrhoff want to much money, they could sign the other guy.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devil GM Lou Lamoriello on a possible Zach Parise return this season, “I would hope so, but let’s wait and see,” Lamoriello said. “Zach is progressing daily.” The Devils could also get Defenseman Matt Corrente (shoulder) back this year, he’s been skating for over 2 weeks.
  • Louis Jean of Sportsnet: Lightning forward Simon Gagne met with a neck specialist on Friday and won’t be in the lineup on Saturday. He received an injection for a pinched nerve and needs to rest for 4 days.

Injury updates and starting goalies for Black Friday

  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Phoenix Coyotes center Matthew Lombardi has been out since the 2nd game of the season with a concussion, still doesn’t know when he’ll able to return. Regarding physical activity Lombardi said, “I haven’t been able to do anything.”
  • Jonas Siegel of AM640: Jonas Gustavsson is expected to start in net for the Maple Leafs on Friday and Saturday. JS Giguere is getting closer to returning, “If I had a weekend of practice ahead of me I’d say maybe Tuesday would be a great day,” said Giguere. “But who knows, might be before that, might be after that.
  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Jhonas Enroth was returned to the AHL, so it looks like Ryan Miller is ready to go. Derek Roy (elbow and migraines) should be ready for tonight’s game against the Maple Leafs. Craig Rivet will likely be a healthy scratch again.

Horton on the move before the draft? Stars need a pucking moving defenseman … To get Chiarelli’s attention, Oilers could ….

DJ Been of WEEI: There were reports that this weekend that the Bruins were close to trading for Nathan Horton, but it hasn’t happened yet. Several teams may also be close on a deal for him. The Maple Leafs are another possible destination for him.

Bob McKenzie via Twitter: Nathan Horton hasn’t been moved yet, but will be moved, the Bruins are right in it.

Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If the Oilers wanted to see if they land the top 2 picks, offering Ales Hemsky and Jordan Eberle or Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson might get Chiarelli’s attention. Chicago could be asking for a 2nd round pick to get Kris Versteeg, plus taking Brent Sopel’s $2.2 million contract off their hands. The Sabres could use a defenseman like Sheldon Souray. The Sabres are looking to move Derek Roy, Tim Connolly, and Drew Stafford. The Sabres aren’t that interested in re-signing Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman.

Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars have a surplus of left handed forwards (no right handed centers, and potentially only 1 right handed forward. The Stars could really use a puck moving defenseman, and could send out one of their top-6 wingers, James Neal, Jamie Benn, Brenden Morrow or Steve Ott.

Craig Custance of the SportingNews: The San Jose Sharks could be looking for a top-tier defenseman with possible targets, Anton Volchenkov, Paul Martin, Sergei Gonchar, and Zbynek Michalek.

Horton dealt by Draft, to Sabres? St. Louis to get extension … Oilers getting calls for #1

  • Steve Gorten of the Sun Sentinel: Nathan Horton’s time as a Florida Panther could be close to coming to an end. It’s looking like he’ll be dealt by next weeks NHL draft, and it wouldn’t surprise his agent. Horton has 3 years left on his 6 years, $24 million contract. His no trade clause kicks in July 1st. The Buffalo Sabres definitely could use a winger with size, have shown interest, and have been rumored to be shopping Derek Roy and Tim Connolly.
  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: Steve Yzerman has started working on a contract extension for Martin St. Louis. What could complicate things a little are the numbers and term length, as St. Louis is 35 and the Lightning would be on the hook for the entire salary (and cap number) if he would retire early, so the deal has to make sense for them. Yzerman must also send a qualifying offer to Paul Ranger to retain his rights. Ranger missed all of last season for ‘personal injuries’, he would definitely improve their blueline. Yzerman will also look to re-sign Kurt Foster if the numbers make sense. The Lightning will take the best player available with the 6th overall pick, with a “remote” chance of trading it.
  • Darren Dreger on TSN: The Oilers continue to get inquiries about the 1st overall pick, and GM Steve Tambellini will continue to listen to offers, they are unsure what it would take to get the pick though. David Booth, Dmitry Kulikov and Jacob Markstrom could be the only untouchables for Florida. Nathan Horton and Steven Weiss are available. The Predators are interested in Kris Versteeg. No offers have been sent to the Leafs for Tomas Kaberle yet. Teams may wait until the draft when the no-trade is lifted in fear that their proposal will be shopped to drive up the price. As many as 8 teams could put forth an offer.
  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: The Bruins have received some offers for the #2 pick, and GM Peter Chiarelli was impressed with one of the offers. But … “I’m not moving it,” Chiarelli said of the No. 2 position. “We’re going to take one of those two forwards.”
  • Chris Koc of ChicagoBreakingsports.com: The Atlanta Thrashers have been granted permission to speak with Chicago Blackhawks associate coach John Torchetti. about their vacant head coaching position.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: It’s the year of the goalie. UFA’s: Evgeni Nabokov, Martin Biron, Dan Ellis, Michael Leighton, Chris Mason, Jose Theodore, Antero Niittymaki, Vesa Toskala, Johan Hedberg, Patrick Lalime, Manny Legace, Wade Dubielewicz, Alex Auld, Steve Valiquette, Andrew Raycroft, Yann Danis and Curtis Sanford. Goalies available for trade: Carey Price or Jaroslav Halak, Tim Thomas, Cristobal Huet. Turco would be a good fit in Philadelphia, but they might not think so. Martin Biron could end up being a backup in Buffalo where he started his career. The Lightning have had some discussion with their UFA goalie, Antero Niittymaki. The St. Louis Blues have begun talks with Chris Mason in hope of re-signing him.
  • Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: Could the Washington Capitals head in to next season with two, 22-year old goalies, Neuvirth and Varlamov? GM McPhee didn’t rule out bringing back Jose Theodore. McPhee basically said that Karl Alzner and John Carlson will be playing full time on the Capitals blueline. They are talking with Eric Belanger about re-signing him. The team has talked with Shaone Morrisonn, but he isn’t a lock to be re-signed.

Changes Coming in LA and Buffalo … Devils Coaching Options

  • Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times: The LA Kings have 9 free agents to deal with this off-seaosn, 6 UFAs and 3 RFAs, and there is a chance at all 6 UFAs won’t be back. Alexander Frolov could be looking for $5 million a year, not likely getting that in LA, or maybe from anyone else in the NHL. Freddie Modin wasn’t very productive since being acquired at the deadline. Jeff Halpren didn’t have much success either. Poor defensive play since December injury, and coming off a $3 million contract may have paved the wayRandy Jones to move on. The game may be getting too quick for Sean O’Donnell. Raitis Ivanans may not be worth the roster spot anymore. Their 3 restricted free agents, Brad Richardson, Scott Parse, and Rich Clune, all made under $600,000 and wouldn’t be getting big raises, so they might be back.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Jason Spezza’s no movement clause starts on July 1st, and fans are starting to hope that he’s traded. But fans may not get their wish as both he, and the Sens would like to have him wearing a Senators uniform next season.
  • Elliotte Friedman of CBC.ca: Anton Volchenkov’s starting point will be Mike Komisarek’s 5 year, $22.5 million, and someone will give that or more. Friedman thinks Halak won’t re-sign in Montreal unless it’s for a boat load of cash. Wherever Carey Price ends up next year, he needs a veteran goalie to mentor him. Doug Risebrough is in the running for the Lightning GM job, and could be a candidate for San Jose if the organization goes in a different direction. The Lightning’s new GM will decide the fate of Vinny Lecavalier, new owner Jeffrey Vinik might be open to keeping him.
  • Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News: Changes could be coming with the Buffalo Sabres, GM Darcy Regier and coach Lindy Ruff could be on the hotseat. Tim Connolly, Jason Pominville, Derek Roy underacheived. Trade deadline acquisition Raffi Torres was a scratch for their elimination game. The team in general is on the small side, without the physical side that you need in the playoffs.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils will be searching for a new coach at Lemaire retired after one year. Brooks thinks the Devils should look inhouse and promote their AHL coach and long time Devil, John MacLean. Other candidates could be Ken Hitchcock, Bob Hartley, and Mike Keenan.
