Danny Briere, Matt Read, Brayden Schenn and Chris Pronger are out. Briere is a possibility to play tonight. Buzz started on Tuesday when GM Paul Holmgren, their pro scout Al Hill, and director of player development Dave Brown were at the Capitals-Ducks game. The Flyers were thought to have interest a depth defenseman from the Ducks, possibly Sheldon Brookbank. They appear to be satisfied with their team for now.

“They’ve made it clear that they are not willing to make a trade to just make a trade,” the source said. “They don’t have that much wiggle room under the salary cap and it’s not as if they’re in a tailspin. No matter, they would have no shortage of teams to deal with, as Columbus, Boston and others try to sort out their problems.”

Richards not a lock for Rangers … Contract updates on Doughty, Stamkos and Weber … Keith’s injury

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: It’s not a guarantee that Brad Richards will sign with the NY Rangers in the off-season. The Rangers may not offer the term or dollar amount that the Kings, Leafs and maybe Stars could offer. Brooks expects Richards to get 7-8 year offers in the $7-7.5 million range, but the Rangers may only offer 5-6 years at $6-6.5 million.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: There is still no update on the extent of Duncan Keith’s finger injury. The Fan 590 sites an ESPN sources that the finger is broken, but not known if he can play through it.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: GM’s in Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto are not happy with the way trades are broken to players, many times the players find out before the team can contact them. “Trade protocol demands teams not inform players of trades until they’re rubber-stamped via a trade call originating from the league’s New York office. While the teams wait in line for the trade call, word invariably leaks out.” Burke wants to discuss at the GM meetings what can be done about this, Bill Daly adds, “Not sure anything can be done about it.” The LA Kings and Drew Doughty have had “no substantial discussions” according to Doughty’s agent Don Meehan. No talks are scheduled for the Lightning and Steven Stamkos but he’s still expected to sign a deal longer than 3 or 4 years according to his agent. Predators GM David Poile doesn’t think a deal with Shea Weber will get done before the end of the season.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Peter Mueller has been shut down for the year despite his concussion symptoms improving. Mueller was skating on his own, but never practiced with the team.
  • Pat Hickey of Habs Inside/Out: Jaroslav Spacek had surgery over the weekend on his knee, and he should be able to rejoin the lineup in 3-5 weeks.

Heika looks at what Richards may be considering in Dallas … Kaberle-Bruins to talk after season … Weber’s worth … more FA and injury notes

  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika on Brad Richards,

I think you’re right in a lot of ways. I think what he would like to know is what level of commitment to winning will come from the new ownership. He wants a team committed to chasing a Stanley Cup and paying the money it takes to get that done. He does not want to be on a team where getting out of the first round of the playoffs is seen as a huge accomplishment. And, if you look at the past five or six seasons, that’s what the Stars are right now. If an owner is in place and states he wants to spend money and try to win now, then I think Richards is in. If a new owner talks about budgets and setting a low payroll in hopes of business success, I think he is out.

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said he spoke briefly to Kaberle’s agent the day after they traded for him, and they agreed to not to talk about an extension till after the season. “It was in a very postive light,’’ said Chiarelli, “and I am very optimistic.’’ Dupont thinks it would be a 3 or 4 year deal in the $4-4.5 million range.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Mirtle thinks at this moment that the Maple Leafs and Clarke MacArthur will eventually get a deal done for the RFA, likely at the 11th hour, and closer to Burke’s number than agent’s Don Meehan’s.
  • Jim Matheson via twitter: Duncan Keith has a $5.5 million salary cap hit, Brent Seabrook is at $5.8 million. Shea Weber’s should be in the same ballpark.
  • Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Alexander Radulov said “never say never” about a North American return, and added, “From time to time I get offers [from the NHL], but they’re more like hints. B/c it’s pointless now that I’m under contract.”
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators have had preliminary discussions with Craig Anderson who will be a UFA at the end of the season. Serious negotiations likely won’t start till later in the season when the Sens have a better idea of what they have in Anderson.
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Jonas Hiller is still experiencing vertigo symptoms and he didn’t make it through the entire practice yesterday.

“It’s still not the way I want to,” he said. “I still have the symptoms and I still don’t feel right. It still feels like I’ve got something slowing me down and it seems like I’m always behind the play. It doesn’t hurt or anything, but it’s definitely not a nice feeling.”

Hiller didn’t consider it a setback but said that “it’s definitely (taking) longer than I thought and longer than I wanted to.”

  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle on his injury that kept him out of last night’s game, “You know I can’t discuss what it is, but obviously I’m not going,” Ian White wouldn’t mind re-signing with the Sharks, “Without question,” White said. “How could you not want to play on one of the top teams every year and have a good shot at winning?”

Krejci and Boychuk travel with Bruins … Keith off 1st PP unit … Markov’s injury won’t be known until Wed. or Thurs. … Audio on Scott Gordon

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Andrei Markov will see Dr. Tony Miniaci of the Cleveland Clinic on Wednesday or Thursday, extent of injury should be known after then.
  • Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: With the Blackhawks power play struggling, coach Quenneville took Duncan Keith and Tomas Kopecky off the first until and replace them with Brent Seabrook and Marian Hossa. Patrick Kane was back on right wing with Toews and Stalberg after a 2 game experiment on the left side.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Anaheim Ducks put Troy Bodie on waivers yesterday. Bodie has been scratched the last 8 games. The Ducks have decided to go with Kyle Palmeiri and Josh Green instead of Bodie. If he clears waivers, he’ll likely be sent to Syracuse.
  • HNIC Radio: Kevin Weekes: talks about Sean Avery’s personality, Jarome Iginla’s performance and Scott Gordon’s re-assignment.

Rangers lose Gaborik and Drury … Ballard leaves Canucks game … Souray makes AHL debut … Someone wearing #66

  • Jesse Spector NY Daily News: The New York Rangers lost Marian Gaborik last night for 2-3 weeks with a separated shoulder after taking a hit from Colby Armstrong. Chris Drury was also injured last night in his first game back after a broken index finger as he broke the same finger, but in a different spot, he’ll be out 6 weeks. Vinny Prospal will have knee surgery on Tuesday, and will be out indefinitely. Erik Christensen is expected to be back in the lineup on Monday after sitting out last night’s game.
  • Sheldon Souray made his AHL debut last night in a 7-1 Hershey Bears victory, recording 1 assist and was a +3 with 2 PIMs.
  • Erik Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: Calgary Flames rookie TJ Brodie will be wearing the number 66 this season. That doesn’t seem right to me, it’s one of those rare numbers that shouldn’t be worn by just anyone. Duncan Keith averaged just over 32 minutes of ice time through the first 4 games.

Coyotes back to Winnipeg? 2009 Draft picks to join Senators … Duncan Keith has bad Skates

  • Andrew Willis of the Globe and Mail: Winnipeg entrepreneur Mark Chipman (who co-owns the 15,000 seat arena) and Toronto billionaire David Thomson are working on bringing the NHL back to Winnipeg. Rumors out of Phoenix yesterday were that they were getting close to doing this, but that may not be the case. Rumors that the Coyotes will be changing to the Jets have been around for over a month, but are being shot down by the league. Bill Daly says the NHL has no plans on moving the Coyotes to Winnipeg or to any other city. The NHL still wants to find a buyer that wants to keep the team in Phoenix. More will be known about Jerry Reinsdorf`s intensions and Ice Edge Holdings by Thursday, as that is the date the city of Glendale set for a lease to be settled.
  • Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: 2009 1st round pick Jared Cowen will join the Ottawa Senators if his Junior club is eliminated from the playoffs, but it`s doubtful he`ll play a game. They are also close to signing 2009 2nd round pick, U of Denver defenseman Patrick Wiercioch, who`ll also join the team but probably not play. If either plays a game, they`ll burn a year on their entry level contracts.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: One UFA who might consider retiring after the season is Stars winger Jere Lehtinen. The 37-year-old will wait until the summer to decide if he wants to come back. The Stars would like to have him back. This season he made $1.5 million base with up to $1 million in bonuses, which he’ll make most of.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith was on fire for most of the season, but has struggled recently, going a minus 7 in the last 13 games. One of the reasons for his struggles has been that he hasn’t been comfortable in his skates. “I like my skates to fit right and to feel good,” Keith said. “When you feel good out there, you play good. It’s been a while since I had a good pair. “They’re just not sending me good pairs of skates, there’s not much more to say. Every hockey player likes his equipment to feel good and my skating is my biggest asset. When my skates are feeling good and fit right and are how I like them, then I skate how I want to skate.” Keith says he doesn’t want to make a big deal of the skate issue. If you don’t want to make a big deal out it Duncan, why did you bring it up to the media then?
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Blue Jackets will most likely be looking for a new coach in the off-season, and early candidates could be former Oilers coach Craig MacTavish, Anaheim AHL coach Kevin Dineen, and Predators assistant coach Brent Peterson.

Keith, Kane and Toews Signing on Thursday

According to TSN and Chicago Now, the Chicago Blackhawks will announce the signings of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith. Kane and Toews receiving 5 year extensions, with Keith signing a 13 year deal. Press conference called for 2:00 pm CST.

As everyone knows, the ‘tagging’ rule applies here, and the ‘Hawks will have to cut some salary cap room. Brent Sopel and Cam Barker are 2 names that have appeared over the weeks as to players who could be moved. Last week the Leafs and ‘Hawks were rumored on a Sopel and a 2nd round pick for Jiri Tlusty.

The ‘Tagging’ Rule facing the Chicago Blackhawks

So it’s been reported here and everywhere that Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane (5 years) and Duncan Keith (up to 13 years) are about to re-sign with the Blackhawks. There has been so much talk about the inevitable signings and cap issues that the Blackhawks have, that I didn’t really want to bring them up again. Pretty much every sports site and blog dating back to last July have touched on their issues on numerous instances (from mynhltraderumors – Capoligist needed in Chicago July 8th, and Hossa’s Contract Investigation July 31st). We all know that they are going to have to make a trade or 2 to free up cap room for next season, and that Brian Campbell and Cristobal Huet are 2 contracts that they’d probably like to remove, rather than a Patrick Sharp or Kris Versteeg.

But why am I writing about them then? This blame lies with Tab Bamford of the BleacherReport commenting on an ESPN article. Before the Blackhawks are able to officially sign the big 3, they must makes some moves that effects next years salary cap, the ‘Tagging’ rule.

“Tagging” is a rule in the CBA that prohibits a team from having more money committed to the following season than the current year’s salary cap. Essentially, if this year’s salary cap is roughly $56 million, the Hawks wouldn’t be allowed to have the projected $61 million committed to next year’s payroll after these three deals were completed.

I had never heard of this rule before, and it raises a few questions. Were the ‘Hawks aware of this ‘tagging’ rule? Will the Hawks’ become more active in trying to dump salary so they can announce the 3 signings asap, or will they hold on to the signed contracts and file them later on in the season? At what cost will the ‘Hawks go to, to move out salary (packaging a contract and a good draft pick/prospect for a lower salary)?

Around the Boards: The 3 Hawks’, Savard returning, Filatov gone, Gionta out

    • Bob McKenzie of TSN: Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are reportedly getting 5 year contract extensions, in excess of $6 million per year. Duncan Keith’s deal could be for up to 13 years.
    • Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald: It looks as though Marc Savard could return to the Bruins lineup tomorrow night against the Thrashers. He plans to take part in the full practice today, and if all goes well, he’ll be back.
    • Aaron Portzline and Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Nikita Filatov got his wish and is heading back to Russia for this season. Both sides are saying that he’ll be back in the NHL next season, but that is not guaranteed. GM Howson said he had no plans to trade him.
    • TSN and RDS: It was revealed the Canadiens winger Brian Gionta will be out indefinitely with a fractured bone in his left foot.
    • Michael Obernauer of the NY Daily News: Although Obernauer doesn’t state there is interest, the article provides the below quote. The Rangers might be looking to deal, especially if Drury’s injury keeps him out for a significant time. Dubinsky is out. Kotalik, Avery, Callahan and Lisin are struggling of late.

“Obviously our biggest weakness is we’re not getting any secondary scoring,” John Tortorella said. “We can’t keep on going one or two goals and expect to win some hockey games.”

    • Dan O’Neill of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Blues find themselves a unique situation, they have 8 healthy NHL calibre defenceman on their roster. One of the main decisions the Blues will need to make is what to do with Alex Pietrangelo; do they keep him up, send him back to the OHL (to young for the AHL) or allow him to play for Team Canada at the World Junior Championship in Dec.-Jan.
