State of the Los Angeles Kings: NHL Trade Deadline Edition

Here is the 2nd installment of our expanded NHL Trade Deadline coverage. We’ll be posting team outlooks leading up to trade deadline over the next couple weeks from a variety of contributing writers.

Needs: Nothing but a scorer will do. Although ranked last in offense, Los Angeles is in the top eight in the West due to the stellar work by goaltender Jonathan Quick, the team’s clear cut MVP. With 20 of the Kings final 32 games on the road, their margin for error is miniscule and they must deal for a top six finishing forward in order to qualify for the post season. With the heat on GM Dean Lombardi from ownership to win now, he will likely have to broker a blockbuster along the line of the Mike Richards trade to overcome the lack of production from Dustin Penner and Jarret Stoll, a natural center shuttled to the wing on the second line but unproductive.

In order to bring back a player of that caliber, the Kings will have to deal from their strength, defense and goaltending with Jack Johnson and Jonathan Bernier the assets being offered to the market. While they’d take a producer on either wing, the gaping hole that exists on the left side has not been filled since the departure of Ryan Smyth over the summer. They have over $ 3 million of cap space availability, so to bring in a high priced player for half a season is doable even without a roster player departing. Injured Simon Gagne is not close to being ready and there is increasing talk that he will be landing on Long Term Injured Reserve prior to the deadline for further cap relief. There is some chatter  of interest in New Jersey’s Zach Parise given the Devils reported precarious financial standing but the cost of Dustin Brown and Bernier may only occur if Kings drop out of the top eight in the next month.

  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Taylor Hall will be out 2 to 4 weeks with a left shoulder injury.

    “I thought I was going to be out for a shorter period of time,” he said, “but two to four weeks isn’t bad. It’s not like I’m missing a huge chunk of games, where it would take me three to four games to really get back into the swing of things.

    “I want to get back as quick as I can, obviously. I just have to try and rehab it as quick as possible .. make it as strong as possible.”

  • Elliotte Friedman of CBC.ca: Other coaching situations to watch are in Calgary, Anaheim and Colorado. Eric Francis reported over the weekend that there won’t any changes in Calgary. The Ducks budget is stretched, which may may be evident in them passing up on Blake Comeau and his pro-rated $2.5 million salary. Flames GM Jay Feaster on Jarome Iginla: “He is part of the solution…We are not trading him.” The Wild and Predators made claims on Comeau, who the Flames ended up getting. The Islanders didn’t want to take on any salary in a Comeau trade, so they put him on waivers.
  • James Murphy of ESPN: Murphy doesn’t think the Bruins are considering trading Tuukka Rask now or in the near future. He is their future starting goalie. David Krejci will be a UFA at seasons end, but he may not able to expect “big money.” Murphy thinks that if Krejci continues to be average, they could explore what his trade value is, though he doesn’t think they’ll give up on him yet. Murphy doesn’t know if the Bruins have held contract talks with Chris Kelly.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks Bobby Ryan found himself practicing with the 3rd line yesterday along with Ben Maxwell and Niklas Hagman. Matt Beleskey was on the top line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Ducks backup Dan Ellis had an ultrasound yesterday on his groin injury.
  • Luke DeCock: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford acknowledged that their budget woes cost them the ability to get/keep veteran leadership. He mentioned Eric Cole and Ray Whitney.
  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Even with the possible return of Penner on Thursday, Terry Murray’s comments sounded like Dustin Brown could see more time at left wing.
  • Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets defensemen Tobias Enstrom and Randy Jones are back skating. Enstrom is expected to be out until after Christmas. Jones could be 8 or 9 days away. Brett Festerling and Derek Meech are out indefinitely. Ron Hainsey hasn’t been able to go since last Wednesday.
  • Ben Kuzma via twitter: With Cory Schneider starting for the Canucks tonight, it makes a strong statement that he could be the number 1 goalie in Vancouver.

Trade groundwork has been laid … Time running short for Turris … Devils and Kings talking … Krejci odd man out … Filatov on his way out

  • Craig Custance of ESPN: Teams are closing in on the point where they know what they have and what they may need. Blue GM Doug Armstrong:

    “A lot of groundwork has been laid and (Tuesday) was more putting fertilizer on some of those seeds you planted to see what happens. You get more work done when you’re in the room with 30 people than trying to pick up the phone 30 different times.”

    Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster:

    “We have a lot of work to do,” Flames GM Jay Feaster said. “We’re not happy where we are. We need to improve in a lot of areas. This isn’t acceptable to be where we are right now.”

    The Hurricanes are 1-5-0 in their last 6 and are in need of a shakeup. The Islanders have dropped to last in the Eastern Conference. The Jets may be thinking long-term and have 2 UFA’s in Chris Mason and Johnny Oduya. Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff:

    “I’m not a big believer on putting deadlines on anything,” he said. “You make decisions based on what the right timing is for you. The league puts a lot of deadlines on you for signing guys or trading deadlines, so you certainly have parameters. But I’m not going to put any deadlines on it.”

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The NHL board of governors will vote on realignment at the Dec. 5th-6th meetings. The Wings would like to move to the Eastern Conference, or at least play home-and-homes with the other Conference. Western Conference teams don’t want to see the Red Wings move to the East. Coyotes GM Don Maloney reiterated his stance with Kyle Turris.

    “For the 15-hundredth time, we have no intention of trading him, regardless of the offer, at all whatsoever,” Maloney told ESPN.com.

    Turris has 1 and 2 year offers from the Coyotes sitting on the table. The Blue Jackets have intensified their efforts to get a goalie. Antero Niittymaki won’t be back for another 3-4 weeks, but could be on the move at some point. Teams have inquired to see if he’s available.

  • The Fourth Period: The LA Kings and NJ Devils maybe talking trade, they are both scouting each other. The Devils have been interested in Jonathan Bernier in the past, but sources close to the Kings have said they are not interested in trading Bernier at this moment, unless blown away by an offer. The Devils may also be looking for some scoring help, but that help likely isn’t coming from the Kings, unless they are interested in Dustin Penner. Dustin Brown and Jack Johnson could be trade candidates as well.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson notes the Predators have positioned themselves well to retain both Ryan Suter and Shea Weber. They may be able to get Suter in the 7 years for $49 million range and Weber for 6 or 5 years at $7.5 million. Matheson doesn’t see them trading either defenseman and wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander Radulov returns to Nashville next season. Matheson also thinks that if Linus Omark isn’t called up in the next month, he’ll head back to Europe.
  • Joe Haggerty via twitter: Haggerty thinks that David Krejci could be the odd guy out in Boston with Bergeron and Seguin down the middle. The Bruins aren’t sure he’s a $5 million a year guy.
  • Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has said again that he is not interested in Marty Turco. Names on Burke’s radar could be Scott Clemmensen (FLA), Evgeni Nabokov (NYI) and Antero Niittymaki (SJ). Saturday will mark 4 weeks since James Reimer has hit by Brian Gionta. Ben Scrivens will start tonight, marking his 6th start in the last 7 games.
  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein wonders if it’s time for the Trent Hunter experiment in LA to end, and to bring up a young speedy forward.
  • Tim Sassone via twitter: If Blackhawks Rostislav Olesz is sent to the minors, they’ll have $6.95 million in cap space. Plenty of room for a center and/or a power play QB.

Crosby not ready to start in 1st round … Rangers season down to today, Gaborik’s last game with them? Adam Foote retires

  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby took part in another non-contact practice yesterday, but is not expected play in the start of the 1st round next week, “He has a couple more steps to go in his rehabilitation before he can even think about returning to play,” Bylsma said. “I don’t know how fast that’s going to happen. I don’t know if that’s going to happen. Considering he has a couple more steps to go through, it seems like anything in the immediate future is out of the question.”
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers season comes down to today, “The Rangers must win and the Hurricanes must lose, whether in regulation, overtime or via a shootout. Or if the Rangers fall in overtime, they need a regulation loss by the Hurricanes to advance.”Chris Drury is expected to play, the 1st time since Feb. 3rd. Mats Zuccarello was recalled earlier in the week, so it’s likely that Sean Avery will be scratched, and the Matt Gilroy RWer experiment is over. Brooks thinks it’s possible that this could be Marian Gaborik’s final game in a Ranger uniform. He was benched for part of the 3rd period on Thursday. Gaborik still has 3 years left on his contract at $7.5 million per season.
  • Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Kings winger Dustin Brown temporarily left last night’s game after crashing into the boards. Nothing is really known about the injury, he finished the game but didn’t talk to the media after the game as he was receiving treatment.
  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers forward Ryan Jones will be UFA, but hopes that he can stay in Edmonton.

    “Right now my mindset is to get something done here, but I’ve earned the opportunity to be an unrestricted free agent. If it doesn’t work out (here), I’ll have to go a ­different route.

    “There’s been talks going on all along (between the Oilers brass and his agent), whether its about numbers or just trying to feel things out. By no means have either one of us moved on.

    “My thoughts right now are that I hope to be here. If not I’ll move on.”

  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray got a 3 year contract extension yesterday, but coach Cory Clouston may coach his last game for them today. According to Brennan, “Murray isn’t bringing him back because Murray doesn’t want him back. That plain, that simple.”

Dustin’s Brown hit on Antti Miettinen a check to the head?

    • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown was kicked out of last night’s game for a hit that was deemed to be a check to the head. The hit is expected to be reviewed by the league.

      “If I’d hit him in the head, he’d probably be on the ice for a lot longer than he was,” Brown said. “The league’s looking at hits like that. I think that was a clean hit from top to bottom. Shoulder on shoulder. He’s shooting the puck — he’s in a vulnerable position maybe but I’m not going to not make that.”

    No truth to Kaberle, Rosehill for Brown … Another Forsberg comeback? Donovan, Pisani looking for a deal

    • There was a rumor floating around the internet last night that the Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Tomas Kaberle and Jay Rosehill to the Los Angeles Kings for Dustin Brown. The report was tied to Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider but he had nothing to do it. All of it was false.  Spector’s Hockey via twitter sums it up the best: “So, to sum up, folks: No truth to rumor the Leafs were about to trade Kaberle to the Kings for Dustin Brown. Total BS.” Daniel Tolensky (of TSN) via twitter: ”Does anyone really think Kings will trade their 25-year old Captain who scored 81 G over 3 yrs & has 4 yrs left @ $3.175 mil for Kaberle?”. Tolensky tweets that a top-6 forward for Kaberle would be bad contract (Malone)/project (Stafford)/prospect (Moller) and a pick, either a 1st or 2nd. Tolensky also thinks that Drew Stafford and a pick could be fair option for Kaberle.
    • Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Murphy can see Kaberle going to Boston, and Marc Savard going to Ottawa. (A 3-team, inter-division trade, unheard of. I don’t know what Toronto would get/want from Ottawa’s roster.)
    • Kevin Allen via twitter: There’s a Swedish media report that Peter Forsberg is thinking about returning to the NHL.
    • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Answering some questions from a reader. The Stars have 20 players under contract for next season at $40.6 million, and they should be able to get James Neal,  Nicklas Grossman, and Matt Niskanen under contract, under their internal cap ceiling. The Stars will probably hold tough on their offers. Heika thinks the Stars could be offering Neal a 2 year deal for $5 million, Grossman at around $2 million per season for 3-4 years, and Niskanen a 1-year deal for around $1 million.
    • George Malik of MLive: Andreas Lilja finds it “tough” and “a little frustrating” being without an NHL contract for season. The frustration comes from the family side of things and not on the professional side, finding a home, enrolling kids in school. Lilja’s theory as to why there are still so many free agents out there, “They want to drive down salaries.  At the same time, I believe that there are many teams that want to attract younger players and give them a chance to play”
    • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Shean Donovan is hoping to get one more shot at the NHL. He’s 49 games short of 1,000. He’s talked to a couple teams, not no solid offers yet. He has 2 offers in Europe but will wait it out for a bit.
    • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The 33-year Fernando Pisani is still hoping to play in the NHL next season, on a 1-way contract. He’s unsure if he’d take a 2-way deal or a training camp invite.

    Are the Kings interested in Gagne and others? Modano has 4 options … Not much going on for Frolov

    Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:  One report is saying the Los Angeles Kings are out of the running for Simon Gagne, and another says they are still interested. Things were quiet involving Tomas Kaberle over the weekend, but should pick up this week.

    Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Elliott wonders how the Kings can become more attractive to free agents. Drew Doughty, Jack Johnson and Wayne Simmonds will be free agents soon, and will they want to re-sign with a team that can’t draw top free agents? The Kings may have to go the trade route to fill some holes in their roster. If the Devils sign Kovalchuk, they’ll have to clear out some salary. Brian Rolston could be available, but he’s 37 and has a $5.062 cap hit. Tomas Kaberle is an option but the Leafs probably want prospects and picks (nope … they’d like a top 6 forward, maybe a Wayne Simmonds or Dustin Brown). The Kings like Simon Gagne, and the Flames may deal Robyn Regehr. Marc Savard could fit but the Kings may not be on the 5 team list Savard has.

    Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Alexander Frolov hasn’t received much interest, other than the Rangers doing some brief tire kicking.

    Jeremy Rutherford via Twitter: A “good-faith” move by Jaroslav Halak  by not filing for salary arbitration.

    Dmitry Chesnokov via Twitter: Evgeni Nabokov couldn’t agree on a contract with SKA St. Petersburgh.

    Ansar Khan of MLive: The Detroit Red Wings are close to signing 3 of their restricted free agents to 1 year contracts: Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller and Derek Meech. GM Ken Holland isn’t close to signing Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm, both could get long-term deals later on in the summer though.

    John Shannon via Twitter: The Detroit Red Wings and 3 other teams are interested in Mike Modano.

    David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune: Mike Modano hasn’t heard from the Chicago Blackhawks, but they could be an option for him as they are looking for some 3rd/4th line depth (cost friendly depth). “I’d like to see what kind of wiggle room they have left under the salary cap, if they can fill that third- or fourth-line void and see how I would fit in with those guys,” said Modano. “They have a great nucleus of kids. So there is a lot of interest there. Obviously, coming off the type of year they’ve had there’s a lot of excitement for anybody who has Chicago on their list of options.”

    Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Blake Wheeler filed for arbitration yesterday, but Wheeler’s agent plans on working hard to get a deal done. They haven’t had much discussion with GM Peter Chiarelli as he’s been busy with the draft and free agency. Mark Stuart didn’t file for arbitration as he and Bruins are close to a 1-year extension. Boston re-signed both Nathan McIver and Nolan Schaefer.

    Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski filed for salary arbitration yesterday, but after the meeting his agent and GM Bob Murray last week, they appear to be on the “same page”. More discussions should take place before their arbitration meeting which would be between July 20th and August 5th.

    Around the Boards: Ilya to LA? Governors to talk 2 teams in T.O.? Lightning and Capitals holding pat?

    • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: At upcoming NHL governors meetings, expect talk of a 2nd team in Toronto to be brought up, regardless if it’s not currently on the agenda.
    • ESPN: Their rumors section is suggesting that if Ilya Kovalchuk becomes available, the LA Kings might have an interest, with Dustin Brown as part of a bigger package.
    • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Add Scott Walker to the list of Carolina Hurricanes players that are available for trade, but don’t expect him to be moved until around the trade deadline. He’ll be owed $600,000 after the deadline.
    • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times: Despite their recent struggles, don’t expect the Tampa Bay Lightning to start making moves. ”One of the things that has happened here, in my opinion, the last few years, it has been panic at times,” he said. “You’re not going to see that. It’s slow and steady. It’d be nice to make three blockbuster trades and be first in our division two weeks from now, but it doesn’t work that way.”
    • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: The Capitals now have a bit of Salary Cap flexibility with Nylander off of their cap numbers, but they are not expected to do anything just yet.
    • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Detroit Red Wings have lost another player to injury. Defenceman Jonathan Ericsson injured his left knee and will be out for at least 2 weeks.
