Stamkos talks continue, unfounded twitter trade rumor … Semin being shopped … Doughty talks moving slowly … Leafs re-sign Bozak
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on July 6th, 2011
- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburgh Times: The Lightning and Steven Stamkos continued negotiating yesterday. It’s “A work in progress” according to GM Steve Yzerman. Stamkos’ agent Mark Guy in a text, “Still working on it.” There was an unfounded twitter rumor that Stamkos’ rights would be sent to the Maple Leafs, and Evgeni Malkin would end up in Tampa Bay.
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Capitals are rumored to be shopping Alex Semin around the league with the Canadiens, Predators, Maple Leafs, Flyers, Penguins and Sharks possibly interested. Jets Dman Zach Bogosian’s name has been linked to Semin.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein thinks that if Alexander Semin is traded, McPhee would ship him West.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Negotiations between Drew Doughty and the LA Kings aren’t moving along quickly. Kings GM Dean Lombardi,
“I am getting the feeling on Drew that unfortunately this could take a while. As we just saw this past week free agency produces a frenzy for players at all levels. We must be judicious about not getting into this market for our own players. Therefore it is critical with Drew that the dollars reflect a fair rate of return regarding the term of the contract. We must be prepared to do what it takes to get it right.”
Lombardi added that they’d match any offer sheet. The Kings may be waiting to see what kind of deal the Predators and Shea Weber come too. Doughty’s agent Don Meehan in an email, “There is nothing new to report concerning any further discussions concerning Drew Doughty.”
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Tyler Bozak re-signs with the Maple Leafs for 2 years, $3 million. (Last night there were reports that he signed for 2 years, $1.9 million)
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: The Capitals are about $545,000 under the salary cap with RFAs Troy Brouwer and Karl Alzner still unsigned. They are able to go over the cap by 10% during the summer, and in the fall they might put Tom Poti and Eric Fehr on LTIR if they are not fully healed. The Capitals could also look at some trades to create some flexibility. Ted Leonsis wrote, “We will look to make some trades in the off season maybe even sign another free agent. We will continue to look at all of our options. We may not be able to get anything done. We may be able to do something. Time will tell.”
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: After locking up Andrew Ladd yesterday, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is hopeful to get a deal done with Blake Wheeler soon,
“We had great conversations with his representative (Tuesday) and those will be ongoing,” said Cheveldayoff. “The fact he filed for salary arbitration doesn’t mean much at this time. We have a lot of time to get a deal done.”
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dipatch: The Blue Jackets are still looking to add a defenseman to play with newly re-signed Marc Methot on the 2nd pairing. They are talking with Bryan McCabe, Brent Sopel, Scott Hannan and some others.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Ales Hemsky will be in the last year of his deal and will make $4.1 million. It’s sounding like he’d like to re-sign with Oilers.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Semyon Varlamov’s agent has said that Varlamov has signed a deal with the Avalanche, and that talk about door being open to the KHL are lies.
Penguins signings likely done … Moves coming in NJ … Maple Leafs notes … Panthers offered Vokoun a 4 year deal
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 4th, 2011
- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The Penguins have about $2.1 million in cap space, but it’s unlikely they will make any more signings. They want to be around $1.5 million under the cap during the season to give them the room to bring someone in at a later date. The Pens may be tempted to put Malkin and Staal on the same line again this year. “I don’t think you can say ‘Malkin as a winger failed’ because Malkin as a winger never was tried with Crosby and Staal in the lineup,” Bylsma said.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello,
“We’ll be doing some subtraction. There will not be a salary cap problem here,” Lamoriello told The Post yesterday. “There will be different transactions taking place over a short period of time.”
Players that could be affected are Bryce Salvador ($2.9 million cap hit), Brian Rolston ($5.1 million) and Dainius Zubrus ($3.4 million).
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: The Leafs have brought in Tim Connolly, John-Michael Liles, Cody Franson, Matthew Lombardi, and added 2 new coaches in the past couple weeks. Mike Komisarek’s role will be greatly reduced. JS Giguere wanted to stay but was told no. There wasn’t much attempt to keep Christian Hanson and Tim Brent.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Clarke MacArthur has been monitoring the free agent signings, looking for comparables for his arbitration case later this summer. MacArthur could be getting a nice deal if they get to arbitration. You have to wonder if the Leafs would walk away if it was too much.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: The Panthers last offer to Tomas Vokoun was reportedly 4 years and $10 million. (He signed a 1 year deal with the Capitals for $1.5 million)
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie thinks the Coyotes will gauge Keith Yandle’s trade value and consider if they should re-sign or trade.
Canucks-Ehrhoff working on deal … Leafs had interest in Laich … Hamrlik gets 1 year offer from Habs … Canes-Cole not close … Penguins notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 28th, 2011
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: There has been an offer and counteroffer between the Canucks and Christian Ehrhoff. An Ehrhoff deal would be around Kevin Bieksa and Dan Hamhuis money, a $4.5-4.6 million cap hit. Unlikely that he’d take less than either player. The Red Wings could be waiting if he doesn’t re-sign with the Canucks.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Tim Brent will join Fredrik Sjostrom, Darryl Boyce, Joey Crabb and Jay Rosehill as Maple Leafs UFAs. “We have made it clear that Tim would like to remain in Toronto to improve upon last year’s strong season,” Morris said in an e-mail to QMI Agency Monday night. “However, as of this late date, we would expect that Tim will be a free agent on Friday to look at his alternatives.”
- Damien Cox via twitter: The Maple Leafs were one of the teams that were very interested in Brooks Laich.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: KHL president Medvedev says that he will “help” younger players like Varlamov, Shirokov and Filatov come back to the KHL.
- Tom Reed via twitter: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson made several inquiries at the draft about defenseman, but couldn’t get anything done.
- JF Chaumont via twitter: Defenseman Roman Hamrlik has received a 1 year contract offer from the Canadiens.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: It’s not sounding like the Hurricanes and Erik Cole are close on a deal, things can change quickly though.
- Josh Yohe and Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Even though Tyler Kennedy wasn’t qualified yesterday, GM Shero wants to re-sign him by Friday. Shero also hopes to sign Jagr by then. The Pens may also be interested in re-signing Mike Rupp.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Jaromir Jagr’s agent, Petr Svoboda, is in Montreal and confirms that he spoke with Penguins GM Ray Shero this morning.
- Thomas Reed via twitter: Tyler Kennedy could make sense for the Blue Jackets if he doesn’t come to terms with the Penguins.
- NHL.com: Penguins coach Dan Bylsma on Sidney Crosby,
“He came back to Pittsburgh after a hiatus or vacation with some of his teammates,” Bylsma said. “The doctors here cleared him to go home and work out as he normally would be working out. He’s been working out two times a day and progressing along his normal road of summer activity. That’s what Sid has been doing. He’s got another two and a half months ahead of doing that.”
Bylsma on Evgeni Malkin,
“He really believed — and was trying to convince everyone involved — that he was going to be coming back as soon as possible to play in the playoffs if we could have moved on (to the next round),” Bylsma said. “He was progressing to the point where that was actually a real possibility. He was really doing very well strength-wise and he was ahead of schedule in terms of what the doctors could do with his rehab.”
Winger for Malkin? Crosby to be ready for camp … Less money for Doughty … A deal for Crawford at the Draft … Will Umberger want to return?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 2nd, 2011
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The Penguins have 3 areas to address this off-season. 1. Hire a power play coach. 2. Find a winger for Evgeni Malkin. 3. Upgrade secondary skill. The Penguins have 17 players under contract for next year at just over $55.4 million. They’ll need to add 6 players for under $7 million.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Shero on Crosby,
“He’s certainly going to be ready for camp,” Pens GM Ray Shero told ESPN.com Saturday. “He had really ramped it up before taking a week off. I know you don’t totally know with these things, but Dr. Collins has maintained the whole time that this is a manageable injury and that Sid will be fine. He’s got lots of time now.”
Chris Drury has a no movement clause so he won’t be sent to the minors which had been rumored last week. What the Sabres could be looking for this off-season, “If we can add a little more offense, we need a bit more,” Regier said. “And maybe someone who can add a little experience on the back end because we’re a little young there.” Senators GM Bryan Murray will start their coaching search next week, he already has about 6 applicants.
- Dan Arritt of ESPN Los Angeles: LA Kings defenseman Drew Doughty struggled this past season when comparing to his 2009-10 campaign, and it might hit him in the pocket book. “The drop-off could wind up costing Doughty some dough if he stays with the Kings. He’ll be a restricted free agent on July 1 and free to accept offer sheets from other teams, though the Kings have the right to match.” The Kings also have Alec Martinez, Trevor Lewis, Oscar Moller, Wayne Simmonds and Brad Richardson as RFA’s. It’s likely that Moller will be the only one not returning. The Kings will also likely to take a run at Brad Richards. There were interested in him at the deadline but the Stars where still in the playoff hunt.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons wonders is the Maple Leafs could sign one of Shea Weber, Steven Stamkos or Drew Doughty to an offer sheet, costing them 4 1st round picks. The Phoenix Coyotes lost $36.6 million this past season.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: The Blackhawks and Corey Crawford will get a deal done at the draft. They are expected to offer deals in the 2,3, and 4 year range. There are rumors that the Canadiens could bury Scott Gomez and his $7.3 million cap hit in the minors next year.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson wouldn’t be surprised if Alex Kovalev is in the KHL next year. Canadiens forward Lars Eller played Game 7 with a dislocated shoulder. Matheson doesn’t see the Bruins re-signing Tomas Kaberle unless he “gets his act in gear.”
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: RJ Umberger’s contract expires at the end of next season, and can start negotiating with the Blue Jackets after July 1st, but will he want to re-sign with the team. When asked about if he has concerns about the teams direction,
“That’s an important question for me to ask myself,” he said. “It’s something I need to consider. You only have so many years to play this game. I’m entering the stage of my career where these are the prime years. It’s important to me.
“I’d like to see how the summer plays out. From the end-of-the-year meetings (with Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson and coach Scott Arniel), I know what they expect to do. They said they’re going to be active. But you want to see something done to feel better about the situation.”
Zetterberg and Franzen to return … Possible new Ducks for next season … Miller had concussion … Leighton, Nodl and Carter are day-to-day
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 29th, 2011
Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: With Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen returning from injuries, 2 players will have to be scratched. Mike Modano will likely be a healthy scratch. Kris Draper could be another possibility. Jiri Hudler has played well of late and may keep his spot in the lineup.
Mark Whicker of the OC Register: They list possible players the Ducks may go after this off-season; Joel Ward (Nash), Max Talbot (Pit), Vern Fiddler (Pho), Eric Belanger (Pho), Ville Leino (Phi), Kevin Bieksa (Van), Eric Cole (Car), Alex Tanguay (Cal), Sean Bergenheim (TB), Craig Adams (Pit), Michal Handzus (LA), Mike Rupp (Pit), Patrick Maroon (Phil).
John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller admitted that his late season injury was a concussion. Vogl’s article also has audio from Miller talking about the season, the future, and their goaltending situation.
John Vogl of the Buffalo News: With the new ownership in Buffalo, they may able to go the free agent route to improve this off-season, normally it would have had to been through trade. The Sabres need help at center and on the blueline. They need help down the middle.
Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Gleason wonders if the Sabres will bring Brad Boyes back, he had a good regular season after he came over from St. Louis but struggled in the playoffs. They need help down the middle. Gleason wonders if they could trade away some young prospects for say a Patrick Sharp? Evgeni Malkin? or maybe Danny Briere?
Frank Seravalli via twitter: Flyers goalie Michael Leighton is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Andreas Nodl and Jeff Carter are also listed as day-to-day.
Schneider left due to cramp … NY Rangers have some off-season decisions to make … Malkin back before Crosby … Niemi to start
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 25th, 2011
- Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks goalie Cory Schneider left with under 3 minutes to go in the 3rd period. He had to be helped off the ice after his leg cramped up.
“The cramps, he said, “I could feel coming on after the second and sure enough, on that penalty shot, I just extended my leg and it completely seized up. I felt bad making Lou go in cold in the third.”
Now the question will be, who will start game 7?
“Oh, if I would tell you who I’m going to play, would you believe me now?” said Vigneault, who said he didn’t actually lie, he just “went with the gut.”
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks defenseman Sami Salo lasted only 3 shifts last night with an undisclosed injury. Aaron Rome or Keith Ballard could replace him for Game 7.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The NY Rangers have 7 RFA’s to deal with this off-season. Forwards, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Artem Anisimov, and Brian Boyle. Defenseman Matt Gilroy and Michael Sauer and goalie Chad Johnson. They’ll likely want to bring back UFA Ruslan Fedotenko, and possibly Vinny Prospal. Alex Frolov likely won’t be back. Steve Eminger and Bryan McCabe are UFA’s on the backend. The Rangers will likely go after 31 year old Brad Richards. The Rangers wouldn’t confirm a report that coach John Tortorella signed a 3 year contract extension.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The NY Rangers summer salary cap number is at $47.6 million, with the projected cap number of next year at $62.2 million. Their cap number doesn’t include any of their 6 RFA’s (Brooks didn’t include Chad Johnson), which should about $12 million to sign the 6. If Wade Redden doens’t retire, the Rangers will be on the hook for his contract again, and can’t remove it until they waive him in training camp. Buying out the last year of Chris Drury’s contract would save them $3,333,333 in cap space this year, but would carry a $1,666,667 in 2012-13. Wojtek Wolski carries a $3.8 million next year, and if bought out, would save them $3,333,333 next year. A Sean Avery buyout would save them $1,333,334 in cap space next year. Vinny Prospal, Bryan McCabe and Steve Eminger likely won’t be offered a contract. They won’t offer Matt Gilroy a $2.1 million qualifying offer, but are expected to give him a 2 year offer worth half that.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Rossi has heard from someone close to the Penguins organization that he would expect to see Evgeni Malkin back in the Penguins lineup before Sidney Crosby. Malkin may be able to return if the Penguins get deep in to the playoff, Rossi asked that organization what deep meant, and “was told deep meant conference finals or Stanley Cup Final.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Antti Niemi will start Game 6 for the Sharks. “Nemo will play tomorrow. He is our guy,” coach Todd McLellan said Sunday after practice. “We don’t expect him to be perfect,” McLellan said of Niemi. “We expect him to be a little bit better and I think he expects that of himself.”
- Eric Stephen of the OC Register: With the Ducks eliminated from the playoffs, questions regarding whether Teemu Selanne will retire or not are already appearing. When asked late in the season, Selanne said he’d make the decision before July 1st. Selanne is coming off a 31 goal, 80 point season.
Columbus wouldn’t mind moving to East … Could Malkin return this year? Derek Roy could be back for Game 7
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 24th, 2011
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Columbus Blue Jackets have brought up the idea of moving to the Eastern Conference. It’s not likely to happen anytime soon, if at all. A team from the East would have to move to West, likely due to relocation. Phoenix moving to Winnipeg wouldn’t change anything, nor would a team team relocating to Quebec City. The Board of Governors would also have to be convinced. It’s been rumored that the Red Wings could be the first team to switch Conferences if the option becomes available.
- Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins center Evgeni Malkin and coach Dan Bylsma haven’t ruled out his return during the playoffs. Malkin is at about 9 weeks into his 4-6 month rehab.
“He’s doing well, he’s working hard, but getting on the ice for him right now is really more to get his skates on, test the ice,” Bylsma said. “It’s not really part of rehab or part of him getting back into game shape. It’s part of his rehab, so it’s good for him to be getting on the ice. Again, that’s nine weeks into a long haul for Geno. He’s been working hard. He’s been working diligent. Getting on the ice is probably more for his mindset than it is to get him ready for a practice situation or anything to that accord.”
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers still haven’t named a starting goalie for this afternoon’s game (3 pm). Chris Pronger took some shots at yesterday’s practice and is a game time decision.
- Brian Hamilton and Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Blackhawks hope to have Brent Seabrook back in the lineup today. He didn’t skate with the top 6 defenseman at practice yesterday and will likely need to pass a ‘fitness test’ before he’s given clearance to play.
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Sabres have recalled Matt Ellis to replace the injured Jason Pominville. Brad Boyes was shifted to center. Derek Roy is very close to returning and he could return for a Game 7. “Derek is very close, very close,” Ruff said. “I would put him in a category of within days. Jochen Hecht is a matter of days, too. Help is on its way.”
- Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove: Glen Healy mentions that if the Coyotes were to relocate to Winnipeg, they’d ask Shane Doan if he’d want to come. If he doesn’t, they’d look to trade him, to a team “like LA.”
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons can’t see the Bruins or any other team that excited about signing Tomas Kaberle, “If he ever was a prominent player, he isn’t one anymore.” Ilya Bryzgalov isn’t first person who doesn’t want to play in Winnipeg, Zybnek Michalek choose Pittsburgh with one of the reason’s being he didn’t want to move to Winnipeg if the team relocated.
- Sarah McLellan of hte Arizona Republic: Ilya Bryzgalov’s best bet may be to re-sign with the Coyotes. His playoffs likely cost him some money. “A $1-1.5 million raise from his $4.5 million salary this season is fair and puts him right under the $6 million range enjoyed by the game’s most successful goalies.” Getting Keith Yandle’s contract settle soon would be the best for the organization. Yandle could receive an offer sheet this summer. He’ll be getting a big raise from the $1.3 million he made this season.

Sunday morning Rumor roundup part one
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on February 6th, 2011
- Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province: There are rumors that the NHL is looking into buying the Atlanta Thrashers and moving them to Winnipeg. They would raise $160 million, putting $35 million towards running the team, and offer $125 million to buy the team. It’s not know how far this idea has gone, or if it’s just in the tire kicking stages.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson could be on the hotseat, and possibly the same for Darcy Regier if the new owner wants to start fresh.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Bruins should announce this week if Marc Savard is shut down for the season or not. The Bruins could be looking for forward help and Jackets, Senators, Oilers and Panthers have forwards available for trade. With Evgeni Malkin done for the year it’s likely the Penguins will look at add some scoring. The Thrashers are looking to move Nik Antropov, Ron Hainsey and Freddy Modin. The only way Florida brings back Tomas Vokoun is if it’s on a 1 year deal. The Predators, Kings, and Lightning are looking at Mike Fisher, but the Senators are unlikely to move him. The Sens are looking for 2 top prospects and a high pick. The Canadiens, Sharks, Bruins and Capitals could be interested in Chris Phillips.
- David Kalan of NHL.com: What might the Penguins do with Malkin now done. Jason Arnott might be of interest to the Penguins. The Pens will be able to bring in $8.1 million in salary cap at the deadline. The Pens now have the salary space to add an Ales Hemsky or Dustin Penner, and if shooting for the moon, Jarome Iginla. Malkin’s number comes back on the books next year, so bringing in some help that is under contract next year could be difficult to do.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said he won’t discuss contract extensions with any of his 5 UFA’s, so they may become trade bait. Jan Hejda, Mathieu Garon, Ethan Moreau and Chris Clark and Andrew Murray will all be UFAs. Mike Commodore could be bought out in the summer if they can’t find a team to take him.
- Can’t find embed code for last night’s Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove yet, but here is a link to it.
- NHL Sources Say: The Hockeycentral panel discuss what the Penguins might do to replace Evgeni Malkin (Alex Kovalev an option) as well as a potential trade between Edmonton and Ottawa (Penner and Phillips as key pieces of the deal). Yzerman may be looking to improve along the blueline, possibly Beachemin and Phillips. Senators are looking for a goaltender.
Torn ACL and MCL for Evgeni Malkin
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on February 5th, 2011
TSN: The Pittsburgh Penguins confirmed that Evgeni Malkin has a torn ACL and MCL, resulting from collision with Tyler Myers last night.
Malkin is discussing with doctors if it will be rehab or surgery. Sources are saying that surgery is likely.

Bruins looking for Dman, Savard not replaceable … Forsberg decision by tomorrow? Rangers scouting Souray … Conroy retires … DiPietro out 4-6 weeks
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 5th, 2011
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said that Marc Savard is has “headaches” and “vertigo” two weeks after being hit by Matt Hunwick. Haggerty doesn’t think he’ll return this year.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Chiarelli made it clear that he’ll be looking for a defenseman before the NHL trade deadline, and that Savard “can’t be replaced.”
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Peter Forsberg had good practice yesterday, 48 hours after struggling through a practice. “It’s starting to feel better, actually, compared to Wednesday,” Forsberg said. “We’re near a decision here. We’re very near a decision here.” The Avalanche leave on Sunday for a 4 game road trip, and it’s possible that Forsberg will decide if he’s going to join the team or not by then. If Forsberg comes back, it’s likely on left wing.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Evgeni Malkin’s return to the Penguins lineup didn’t last too long as he left in the 2nd period. He took a somewhat awkward hit, and his knee “appeared to buckle inward.” The severity of the injury is not known yet.
- James O’Brien of Pro Hockey Talk: Isles Rick DiPietro will be out 4-6 weeks after being one-punched by Brent Johnson. He suffered facial fractures and swelling in his knee (and a bruised ego).
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Oilers GM Tambellini said that no GM has called and said he’d take Sheldon Souray on waivers. He’ll remain in the AHL for now.
- EJ Hradek via twitter: Hradek only see’s the NY Rangers acquiring Souray as a re-entry waiver pick-up.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Rangers GM Glen Sather has been to Hershey to watch Souray play, and they sent a pro scout to watch him play tonight.
“Until I get a call from a team saying they’re interested in Sheldon, I won’t be putting him on re-entry (waivers),” said Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini.
“Have I had a call yet from anybody? No, I haven’t,”
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Jonas Gustavsson accepted a 2 week conditioning stint with the Toronto Marlies. Coach Ron Wilson, “He’s got two other guys ahead of him right now playing better. The easiest way for him to gain his confidence is to play some games in the American league.”
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Craig Conroy retired from the NHL yesterday, and will stay with the club as a “special assistant to acting general manager Jay Feaster.”
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Jaroslav Halak missed last night’s game with a ‘very minor’ upper-body injury.
Burke says hasn’t spoken SJ about Thornton … Malkin out tonight … Habs have $3.5 million in cap space … Edler out 3 months after surgery
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 1st, 2011
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Brian Burke said “I have never spoken to Doug Wilson on that. Total fabrication.” Burke was responding to internet rumors of a possible deal with the Sharks involving Joe Thornton.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Jason Arnott has already stated he’d waive his no-trade clause, and is unsure where he’ll finish the season. “I think I have to just go out and play,” he said. “The trade deadline is coming up. I’m sure it will come quicker than normal. I just have to wait and see.”
- Will DePaoli via twitter: Coach Dan Bylsma said that Evgeni Malkin won’t play tonight but he’s traveling with the team.
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Alex Edler underwent micro discectomy surgery on Monday, hopes to be back by the end of the regular season, though GM Mike Gillis said that is unlikely, as it could be 3 months to recover. Sami Salo still doesn’t know when he’ll be able to return, he’s been practicing for 5 weeks. Andrew Alberts could be back on Friday, Aaron Rome could be ready next week.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche winger David Jones will be out indefinitely with a shoulder injury that he suffered in the final game before the all-star break. Peter Forsberg’s next practice is scheduled for Wednesday.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Montreal Canadiens have about $3.5 million in cap space after the season ending injuries to Markov and Gorges. Do they go after a top 6 forward like a Richards, Arnott or Weiss? Or after a defenseman like Robyn Regehr?
- Chris Johnston via twitter: Jordin Tootoo has been cleared to practice after spending time in the leagues substance abuse and behavioral health program.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: St. Louis Blues forward Andy MacDonald will return to the lineup Friday.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: Vinny Prospal could be making his season debut on Thursday. Ryan Callahan is in tonight, Brandon Dubinsky is a possibility.
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: JS Giguere will start in net for the Maple Leafs tonight vs. the Panthers. George Richards via twitter: Scott Clemmensen will be in net for the Panthers.
Dubinsky has fractured fibula … Doughty deal will get done … Malkin out tomorrow … Pronger and Okposo could be back tomorrow
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News on January 19th, 2011
- Joe Yerdon via twitter: Brandon Dubinsky will be out 3-4 week with a broken Fibula
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi has no doubt they’ll get Drew Doughty signed, it will get done eventually. Lombardi also added, that a trade is not a practical option for the Kings and “When everyone is still in it, It’s harder and harder to make a deal in a 30 team league given lack of depth.”
- John Buccigross via twitter: Evgeni Malkin will miss Thursday’s game against the Devils with a leg injury, could be out longer.
- Tim Panaccio via twitter: Chris Pronger is expected to be in the Flyers lineup tomorrow night. Andreas Nodl could be questionable with a bad leg.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: Carlo Colaiacovo could miss a couple weeks after being hit in the eye with a puck last night.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Looks like a Henrik Lundqvist – Jonas Gustavsson match-up tonight in New York.
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Daniel Briere has been officially named to the All-star team.
- Chris Botta via twitter: Looks like Kyle Okposo will be returning to the Islanders lineup on Thursday vs. the Capitals.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: (Before Hemsky left last night’s game with concussion) Reader asks if Oilers will trade Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner. Matheson reponds with … both will be UFA’s after next season and the Oilers won’t want to lose them for nothing. May ask if them if they want to be part of the rebuild or not. It appears the may may be interested in staying.
Injured Canucks … Giguere could waive no-trade … Stars dangling Neal for Dman? Would Sharks consider Souray? Surgery for Whitney
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 17th, 2011
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: It looks like Canucks defenseman Andrew Alberts could miss some time as the team recalled Chris Tanev from Manitoba.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Canucks 4th line center Alec Bolduc will have an MRI done later this week to determine the extend of his injury, but he’s expected to miss a month. His shoulder popped out on a face-off on Friday, this is his 3rd separation in the last 2 years. They’ll need to recall a forward this week, maybe Sergei Shirokov, Viktor Oreskovich, or possibly Cody Hodgson. If they look at a trade to replace him, Islanders center Zenon Konopka could be of interest.
- Mike Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: JS Giguere has a no-trade clause but has made it known that he could be open to waiving it. Tomas Kaberle, François Beauchemin and Mike Komisarek also have no-trade clauses but haven’t said publicly if they’d be open to waiving it. Trade talks in past weeks have involved Kris Versteeg, Clarke MacArthur and Mikhail Grabovski. Trading Versteeg for prospects seems odd since they gave up prospects to get before the season. MacArthur and Grabovski have been a couple of their best players this year. Kaberle for Blake Wheeler continues to float out there, though the Bruins have 7 Dman locked up for next year.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Jarrko Ruutu knows his days in Ottawa are likely numbered. The Kings, Sharks and Penguins could possibly be interested in him.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson thinks the Penguins should trade Evgeni Malkin and move Jordan Staal up to the #2 center, and proposes a Malkin-Rick Nash trade, though admits will likely never happen. Matheson wonders if the Sharks have considered Sheldon Souray. Flyers are looking for right winger who’ll be a UFA at season end, currently have about $1.9 million in cap room. Some think the Stars will dangle James Neal for an offensive defenseman.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney will be heading to N.C. to see his foot specialist (will be his 3rd procedure there) to repair a dislocated tendon in his right ankle. A time frame may be better known today when it gets examined, but “All we know is it’s going to be a good amount of time,” Tambellini said. “He’s dealt with this surgeon before, so he’s very comfortable with him.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Derek Boogaard could be done for the season after suffering a concussion in a fight with Matt Carkner. Don’t look for a Mike Commodore-Brian Rolston deal, Rolston makes too much money for the Blue Jackets. Best Bets for Senators defenseman Chris Phillips are the Capitals and Sharks. If Patrick Eaves keeps up his scoring, Jiri Hudler could find himself an odd man out, would someone take his $2.8 million contract?
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: The Calgary Flames turned down the idea of starting next season in Europe, “We need to focus on what’s important and get ourselves back on track,” said team president and CEO Ken King. Sharks GM Doug Wilson is kicking tires, but “the marketplace is a tough one” as many teams are looking for centers and defenseman. Ilya Bryzgalov’s agent, Don Meehan, is heading to Phoenix today to discuss contract extension with the Coyotes. “We’ve been told that signing Ilya is a priority,” said Meehan.
Veteran for Tavares … Vokoun on the Block … Blues interested in Kovalev? Sturm to LA again … 3 Coaches on the hotseat
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 12th, 2010
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The New York Islanders are looking to add a veteran winger for John Tavares before the Christmas roster freeze next Sunday, Tampa’s Simon Gagne could be one option. Kevin Bieksa will likely be dealt before the trade deadline, and the San Jose Sharks are looking for a defenseman (I don’t see how the Canucks could send Bieksa to the Sharks when it’s very possible they could face each other in the Conference finals). Still whispers that Bruce Boudreau’s job may not be safe despite being 2nd in the conference. Panthers goalie Tomas Vokoun could be traded for draft picks, Dale Tallon will be looking for a 1st round pick, the Lightning could be interested. The NY Rangers are looking to move Alexander Frolov to anyone. The Atlanta Thrashers were also interested in Marco Sturm. The Canadiens and Leafs could be interested in Jamie Langenbrunner.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The St. Louis Blues may have an interest in Ottawa Senators forward Alexei Kovalev. The Blues are without David Perron, Andy McDonald and TJ Oshie, but can’t make a move until their ownership situation is settled, may not be until the new year.
- Boston Herald: Marco Sturm has been traded to the Los Angeles Kings for future considerations, contingent on him passing a physical.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Murphy could see the St. Louis Blues and the Boston Bruins making a trade, as the Blues have some defenseman to offer.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: There could be more validity to the report that Jordan Staal re-broke his hand. Bob McKenzie via twitter: More should be known on Monday if there was a setback on Staal’s hand, there were denials of the re-break and talk of “calcification” issues.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Gazette: Evgeni Malkin missed his 4th consecutive game on Saturday but may be ready to return on Tuesday against the Flyers, or Wedensday against the Rangers.
- Renaud Lavoie of the RDS: With Andrei Markov being out for the season, the Canadiens will now have some extra cash, and could look to Brad Richards. Richard’s first choice is to remain in Dallas but he may have to look elsewhere. He is from nearby Prince Edward Island.
- Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald: Calgary Flames coach Brett Sutter is on the hot seat. “But, make no mistake, it’s coming. It has to, doesn’t it? And perhaps the Flames will end up making the right move.” The Herald did a poll last week in a live chat asking who was to blame, Brett didn’t receive one vote, GM Darryl Sutter had 84% of the votes. Team president Ken King and their scouts each had 8%.
- Dave Hutchinson of the Star-Ledger: John MacLean’s tenure as the New Jersey Devils coach could be coming to end soon. They are 8-19-2 and have lost 9 of 12. “At this rate, it’ll be tough for MacLean to hold onto his job, although general manager Lou Lamoriello seems to be giving him every opportunity to lead his team out of this debilitating slump, one that could crush the Devils’ playoff hopes before Christmas.”
Phaneuf cleared to return … Kane injured … Seguin staying with Bruins … Brodeur almost ready
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 6th, 2010
-
Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star: Dion Phaneuf has been cleared to return to the Maple Leafs, and will accompany the team to Washington and Pittsburgh. He took part in his first full practice since his injury. It’s not known yet which game he’ll make his return, December 16th against Calgary has been a game he’s been focused on. When Phaneuf returns, the Leafs will have some decisions to make on the blueline, as they have plenty of NHL calibre defenseman.
-
Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Patrick Kane only last 23 seconds yesterday before leaving the after falling awkwardly into the boards. “We’ll know more (Monday) exactly where we’re at,” Quenneville said. “It’s tough to speculate and I don’t want to go there right now, but it’s not real serious. I’ll go to that extent.”
-
David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The salary cap could go up $2.1 million from the current $59.4 million if the players exercise the 5% inflator clause. At the Board of Governors meetings (starting today) there will be plenty of talk on ownership. Harley Hotchkiss is looking to sell is 22% stake in the Calgary Flames to the other owners. Potential Phoenix Coyotes owner, Matthew Hulsizer, is expected meet with the committee. They’ll likely also talk about the ownership of Atlanta Thrashers, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, Buffalo Sabres and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Thrashers could potential move to Winnipeg or Quebec City.
-
Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette: Andrei Markov will be a UFA after this season, has he worn a Canadiens jersey for the last time? Will they give him big money despite only playing 52 games and have 2 major knee surgeries. The Canadiens have plenty of time to figure out if need to find a replacement for him, trade deadline day is February 28th.
-
Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has told Tyler Seguin that he’ll remain with the club and won’t be going to the World Jurior Championships later this month.
-
Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Martin Brodeur took part in his first full practice yesterday. Tom Gulitti via twitter: Brodeur will head to Pittsburgh with the team, and coach MacLean will decide after the morning skate if he’ll back up Hedberg or not. Gulitti also tweets that Brodeur had some swelling but no pain, and is aiming to play on Friday.
-
Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Blue forward Andy MacDonald is day-to-day with an upper body injury. He’ll be re-evaluated today, and if it’s a concussion, he could be out for indefinite period of time.
-
Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers continue to have $4.125 million dollars as healthy scratches, Todd White and Matt Gilroy. The longer they carry them, the more salary counts against their cap, which may make it more difficult to add a large salary, say a Brad Richards. Sather doesn’t want to send top young assets for Richards, since he could possibly get him for free on July 1st.
-
Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Michael Leighton or Brian Boucher could be put on waivers once the Leighton’s conditioning stint is over. The Peguins “emphatically say” they are not going to trade Evgeni Malkin for wingers for Sidney Crosby.
Leafs shopping Beauchemin and Komisarek … Habs want to get bigger up front … Sens interested in Bieksa? Plus more injuries and rumors
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 5th, 2010
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ray Emery is working hard on his rehab from hip surgery and is hope to be back this season. In the next couple weeks he’ll likely begin skating with a OHL, then work his way up to the AHL on a 25 game pro tryout before a team is likely to take a chance on him. The Dallas Stars lenders are unlikely to grant the team the money to re-sign Brad Richards. With the Rangers being the top team to have interest in Richards since the Leafs are falling out of playoff contention. The Atlanta Thrashers will start working on a long term contract for their captain, Andrew Ladd. The Phoenix Coyotes still haven’t talked to Ilya Bryzgalov about a contact extension. Matthew Hulsizer will meet with the Board of Governors tomorrow regarding his potential purchase of the Coyotes. Francois Beauchemin ($3.8-million cap hit) and Mike Komisarek ($4.5-million cap hit) have been mentioned around the league, but their contracts makes them extremely difficult to move. The Montreal Canadiens would like to get bigger up front, and move Scott Gomez but his $7.34 cap hit makes it almost impossible (I still can’t believe Glen Sather was able to move him). Could the Habs be interested in Alex Kovalev? The Buffalo Sabres are trying to move captain Craig Rivet ($3.5 million) who’s been a healthy scratch 6 times this year.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch thinks that Kevin Bieksa would be a good fit with the Ottawa Senators, who have liked him for awhile. Garrioch thinks the St. Louis Blues should be interested in Brian Lee, he could be a reclamation project like Carlo Colaiacovo.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Evgeni Malkin missed another game because of his sore knee. He’s been wearing a brace for a month, and he isn’t letting on how much it bothers him.
- Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Pekka Rinne had his knee scoped and he’ll be out 2-4 weeks. “Obviously it’s a big loss. Peks is not only our No. 1 goaltender, but he’s been playing terrific. Unfortunately, when they did the MRI and found out what they found out, they went in and scoped him. It’s unfortunate because he’s playing so well and we were sort of getting healthy. It would be nice to have some health, and then he goes down.” The Preds will roll with Anders Lindback.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton Oilers forward Ales Hemsky is out indefinitely with a right groin issue.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Chris Drury is likely a week to 10 days away from returning to the NY Rangers lineup. Drury can make passes but isn’t shooting yet. Vinny Prospal has begun skating without equipment, no ETA on his return yet.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Joffery Lupul returns to Anaheim but as of yesterday afternoon he hadn’t been given clearance to return just yet. He’s expected to meet with them this weekend, and could be in the lineup this afternoon.
Markov to have season ending knee surgery … Sens working a big deal? Lupul to return Sunday? Sturm and Chiarelli have a plan
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 4th, 2010
-
Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: Andrei Markov will face season ending knee surgery, a complete rebuild of his ACL. It is the same ACL that had surgery on 7 months ago. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday. Markov will be a UFA after this season. He’ll be placed on LTIR, so the Canadiens will have some extra cap room to bring in another defenseman if they choose.
-
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray is trying to trade Brian Lee, but he may also be working on a larger deal that could shake up the Sens. Teams are interested in some of their younger players, and 2 or 3 teams have shown interest in Brian Lee. The Vancouver Canucks could be one teams the Sens are talking to as GM Mike Gillis could be looking to make a deal as well. Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Even though Lee has cleared waivers, he remains with the team. They taped a ‘C’ on his sweater at practice yesterday, and he was skating with Peter Regin and Jason Spezza. Alfredsson was given a ‘maintenance day’.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Joffery Lupul could return to the Anaheim Ducks lineup on Sunday.
- Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald:
According to Sturm, Chiarelli mapped out a plan that would serve both their interests. Sturm agreed to waive the no trade clause for a say on where he might end up. The Kings were obviously on Sturm’s short list, and he refused to divulge other interested parties.
“A couple of days ago Peter explained to me the situation and asked me if I would move my no-trade clause,” Sturm said. “I thought about it overnight and told him OK and he told me the teams who were interested.
I told him I would waive my no trade and now I have to wait. The teams he told me are very good teams and a few of them I think would be a good fit.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: There have been more GMs and Scouts at Maple Leafs games recently. Dion Phaneuf could return on the Leafs western road trip begin on the 14th, so a they may move a defenseman for a forward.
- James Mirtle via twitter: One GM “The teams that need something are the ones that aren’t winning all the time so you’re talking to teams like the Leafs.”
- Chris Johnson via twitter: Atlanta Thrashers GM Rick Dudley has watched the Maple Leafs last 2 games.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: John MacLean’s time behind the NJ Devils bench may be limited. “Among the rumors swirling as the Devils prepared to face the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center was the return of Jacques Lemaire out of retirement or another stint for general manager Lou Lamoriello.” Ken Hitchcock and Bob Hartely have also been rumored. Martin Brodeur could skate today.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins forward Max Talbot had to be helped off the ice at practice after blocking a shot in the foot. There is a chance he’ll play tonight. Evgeni Malkin is day-to-day after suffering an unspecified injury on Thursday, he missed practice yesterday. The Penguins might call someone up for insurance.
