- Fan 590 Audio: Brian Burke was on the morning show yesterday morning talking about music and the Maple Leafs.
- 98.5 The Sports Hub Audio: Bruins President Cam Neely joined Felger and Mazz to break down the team’s recent slump. Is Neely happy with the job head coach Claude Julien is doing? Will any moves be made? Neely gives us the answers.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Cox thinks the Maple Leafs have some trade assets that could help the future. Names that might come up at the trade deadline or before are Francois Beauchemin, Clarke MacArthur, Mikhail Grabovski and Tomas Kaberle.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: JS Giguere will be off skates for 7 to 10 days.
- Scott Burnside of ESPN: The New Jersey Devils season is all but over, 18 points out with no signs of things turning around. Could they look at trading Martin Brodeur to a contender? He has another year left at $5.2 million. Would the Washington Capitals or Tampa Bay Lightning be interested? The LA Kings may look into adding another defenseman before the trade deadline, as Willie Mitchell’s has been unable to remain healthy. He’s played only 15 games and is week-to-week with a knee injury.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Vancouver might trade Kevin Bieksa when Sami Salo returns (it’s still not known exactly when he’ll return). Rick Rypien, who left the Canucks for personal reasons, isn’t expected to be back with the team this season, and it’s possible that he may never return. Former NHLer, current AHLer, Jonathan Cheechoo has a bruised kidney and some internal bleeding. The Islanders may look to trade winger Matt Moulson if he wants more money than they want to give him. The Isles may offer Doug Weight one more kick at the can and send him to a contender if he wants too.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Jordan Staal skated for 30 minutes yesterday with their strength and conditioning coach. He didn’t wear a glove over his surgically repaired hand, nor did he do any stick handling drills. It’s been 50 days since the surgery.
- Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: Even though the NY Islanders 3rd sting goal, Nathan Lawson, got the start of Dwayne Roloson, a trade of Roloson is not imminent. Botta thinks the Isles would ask for a 2nd round pick for Roloson if they decide to trade him.
- The Globe and Mail: The New York Islanders have put Rick DiPietro and defenceman Mike Mottau on injured reserve. DiPietro will be eligible to return in 7 days. Mottau will have surgery on his hip and will be out the remainder of the season.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Milan Hedjuk missed his 6th straight game due to a groin injury.
- Mike Vogel via twitter: Washington Capitals winger Matt Bradley has a broken finger and will miss 2-4 weeks.
- Yesterday @jimbalsillie tweeted “Hi again, social friends! Very early morning. Nashville bound today! And not to learn how to write a country song. Stay tuned.” Later on Bob McKenzie let the world know it was a fake account and to get back to Christmas shopping.
- Matt Cooke’s elbow to Keith Yandle from Sunday night. Yandle called for a 5 game suspension. What do you think of it?

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ray Emery is working hard on his rehab from hip surgery and is hope to be back this season. In the next couple weeks he’ll likely begin skating with a OHL, then work his way up to the AHL on a 25 game pro tryout before a team is likely to take a chance on him. The Dallas Stars lenders are unlikely to grant the team the money to re-sign Brad Richards. With the Rangers being the top team to have interest in Richards since the Leafs are falling out of playoff contention. The Atlanta Thrashers will start working on a long term contract for their captain, Andrew Ladd. The Phoenix Coyotes still haven’t talked to Ilya Bryzgalov about a contact extension. Matthew Hulsizer will meet with the Board of Governors tomorrow regarding his potential purchase of the Coyotes. Francois Beauchemin ($3.8-million cap hit) and Mike Komisarek ($4.5-million cap hit) have been mentioned around the league, but their contracts makes them extremely difficult to move. The Montreal Canadiens would like to get bigger up front, and move Scott Gomez but his $7.34 cap hit makes it almost impossible (I still can’t believe Glen Sather was able to move him). Could the Habs be interested in Alex Kovalev? The Buffalo Sabres are trying to move captain Craig Rivet ($3.5 million) who’s been a healthy scratch 6 times this year.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch thinks that Kevin Bieksa would be a good fit with the Ottawa Senators, who have liked him for awhile. Garrioch thinks the St. Louis Blues should be interested in Brian Lee, he could be a reclamation project like Carlo Colaiacovo.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Evgeni Malkin missed another game because of his sore knee. He’s been wearing a brace for a month, and he isn’t letting on how much it bothers him.
- Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Pekka Rinne had his knee scoped and he’ll be out 2-4 weeks. “Obviously it’s a big loss. Peks is not only our No. 1 goaltender, but he’s been playing terrific. Unfortunately, when they did the MRI and found out what they found out, they went in and scoped him. It’s unfortunate because he’s playing so well and we were sort of getting healthy. It would be nice to have some health, and then he goes down.” The Preds will roll with Anders Lindback.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton Oilers forward Ales Hemsky is out indefinitely with a right groin issue.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Chris Drury is likely a week to 10 days away from returning to the NY Rangers lineup. Drury can make passes but isn’t shooting yet. Vinny Prospal has begun skating without equipment, no ETA on his return yet.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Joffery Lupul returns to Anaheim but as of yesterday afternoon he hadn’t been given clearance to return just yet. He’s expected to meet with them this weekend, and could be in the lineup this afternoon.
No progress on Stamkos contract … Seguin to the World Juniors? Would Sharks trade for Beauchemin or Wisniewski?

- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: There is no new progress to report on the Steven Stamkos contract extension. Yzerman was in Toronto but didn’t meet with Stamkos’s side. “I go back to what I said before, we have to make a deal that makes sense for everybody involved, and I can’t give a time frame on how long that will take,” Yzerman said.
- EJ Hradek via twitter: Hradek doesn’t see the Penguins trading Evgeny Malkin, but it’s possible that they talk about it internally.
- James Murphy of ESPN: A source inside the Boston Bruins has said they may consider allowing Tyler Seguin join Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. This move would give the Bruins some cap relief. With the glut of centers, they may leave Seguin on the wing for the remainder of the season. Marco Sturm should be back in a few weeks, with the Bruins needing to shed between $3.1 and $3.2 million. Jordan Caron has struggled of late and could find himself heading to the AHL. If Seguins was loaned to the Juniors, Caron sent to the AHL, and a Daniel Paille trade (being shopped by the team), would get them cost to the cap when Sturm returns.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Marco Sturm has a no trade clause and not a no movement clause, Murphy still doesn’t see the Bruins waiving him.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Colorado Avalanche will move Tomas Fleischmann back to his natural left wing position, playing with either Paul Stastny or Matt Duchene.
- Elliotte Friendman of CBC Sports: A few GM’s think Marco Sturm will be placed on waivers. If Brad Richards hits the open market in July, he’ll be looking for a team with stable ownership after being in Tampa and Dallas. Friedman wonders if San Jose would be interested in Francois Beauchemin. Another option for the Sharks could be James Wisniewski. Friedman thinks Daniel Alfredsson is injured more than he’s letting on.
- Brian McNally via twitter: The Capitals had been talking with the Avalanche since August about bringing in Scott Hannan. The Caps had $3.8 million in cap room, they’ll now have $2.5 million in cap space for a deadline deal. Corey Masisak via twitter: Caps GM George McPhee says they would have cap space to add a $8 million player at the deadline, Masisak throws out Brad Richards name.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: LeBrun on Anaheim Ducks coach Randy Carlyle,
I believe Randy Carlyle is one of the best coaches in the league. But sometimes — and that time may be coming — you stay long enough in the same place and the players stop responding. It’s why great coaches like Scotty Bowman didn’t stay in the same place forever; the late Pat Burns coached four different teams to impressive levels of success. But like any coach, the players stop responding after a while. It may be that time has come in Anaheim.
- Jason Brough of the Vancouver Province: Kevin Bieksa’s name continues to the center of trade rumors, but there is a chance he stays with the Canucks as there is a chance Sami Salo won’t be able to play this year.
“I think it’s hilarious. It’s funny how you guys keep throwing my name out there and I’m still standing here. I don’t think I can comment on every rumour that’s out there, but certainly with this one, I’m still here today and that’s all I can say. Rumours are out there and I’ve had my fair share. I’ve learned to deal with it and it doesn’t bother me.”

- Globe and Mail: Brian Burke’s daughter writes a letter to the Globe in response to Bruce Dowbiggin’s column early in the week.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche defenseman Kyle Quincey has been cleared to play after missing weeks with a concussion. He was a healthy scratch for last night’s game. The Avs are now carrying 8 defenseman and likely move one of them.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: With Joffery Lupul possibly returning soon to the Ducks lineup, they might consider moving Bobby Ryan to center, creating 3 lines with that could put the puck in the net.
- David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period: There are lots of rumors out there what the New Jersey Devils could do once they need to clear some cap space, but why would they trade center Travis Zajac?
- Craig Custance of the SportingNews: Bob Hartley’s name has been mentioned as possibly the next NY Islanders coach, but his best chance may be if/when Calgary Flames assistant GM Jay Feaster takes over the Flames. Larry Brooks wonders if Hartley would be a good fit in New Jersey or not since his did coach Ilya Kovalchuk in Atlanta.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs may have a trade chip in Francois Beauchemin for teams who are looking for a tough stay-at-home defenseman. Beauchemin is earning $3.8 million this season and next. Cox doesn’t think it’s too bad of a”‘cumbersome contract”, not sure if I agree with that. Devils forward Jamie Langenbrunner’s name keeps popping up in rumors. The Oilers may look to shake things up. Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky were both benched this week. Dustin Penner and Tom Gilbert have played poorly this season. All Oilers mentioned come with a big price tag, all in the $4 million plus.

Not exactly sure what Alex Kovalev was thinking, but he decides to drop the mitts with Francois Beauchemin, but you have to give him credit for not backing down, which might have been the smart move.
Burke outlines what it will take to get Kaberle … Phaneuf to be new Leaf Captain … Would Flyers trade Carter for a frontline goalie?

- David Shoatls of the Globe and Mail: Brian Burke confirmed yesterday that Dion Phaneuf will be named captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs haven’t had a captain since Sundin left after the 2007-08 season. Francois Beauchemin and Mike Komisarek will probabaly be assistant captains if Tomas Kaberle is dealt. The Leafs are also unvailing their new jersey (probably just adding the bottom stripes and a patch). Burke also offered this regarding a Kaberle trade, “I’m going to go for the best player I can get to help my team,” Burke said. “If it’s not a good enough player, would I take a first[-round pick], if it’s a second-tier player? Yes.”
- Phil Sheridan of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers may have do some minor tinkering to their lineup, or they can make some bold moves. They have a young core in Richards, Carter, Giroux, Leino, and van Riemsdyk, but also an older crew; Pronger, Briere, Timonen, Gagne and Laperiere. Michael Leighton could be brought back at a low contract, and they could look to acquire a front line goalie, but does Leighton now think he’s a frontline goalie? Would the Flyers move out Carter to acquire that front line goalie?
- 4period.ru: Reports out of Russia are once again confirming Nikolai Zherdev is looking to come back to the NHL. I wonder if next summer there will be reports that Zherdev is looking to go back the KHL.
- Chip Alexander of Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes will fill their backup goalie position from within as GM Jim Rutherford has said Justin Peters will backup Cam Ward. Peters spent the majority of the season in the AHL, compiling a 26-18-2 record with a 2.54 GAA and .917 SV%. He made is NHL debut last year while Cam Ward was injured, posting a 6-3-0 record with a 2.83 GAA and .903 SV%.
- George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Chris Chelios didn’t say he was going to retire, but he wants to spend more time with his family in Detroit. Please Chris, you’ve had a great career (not including the last couple years), it’s now time to retire.

- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke isn’t worried about the Leafs cap situation for next season. “I’m not worried about (the cap),” general manager Brian Burke said. “We’re not shackled here. I don’t think we’re handcuffed. If I thought we were handcuffed, I’d tell you that.” If the Leafs go into next season with the same roster, and add Nazem Kadri, their cap number is about $51.55 million. About $55.55 million after resigning RFA Jonas Gustavsson and Nikolai Kulemin. Options they have to free up some money are demoting Jeff Finger to the minors, and/or listening to offers for Mike Komisarek or Francois Beauchemin. Tomas Kaberle is also a trade option.
- Toronto Sun: Ice Edge Holdings is considering pulling its offer to buy the Phoenix Coyotes, as talks with the city of Glendale aren’t going well.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Hickey thinks that Martin Biron would be a good back up candidate for either the Jaroslav Halak or Carey Price next year for the Canadiens.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: A reader asks Mike of possible defensemen targets for the Dallas Stars this off-season through free agency or trade. Heika lists some possibilities as: Sergei Gonchar, Pavel Kubina, Kim Johnsson, Paul Martin, Derek Morris, Willie Mitchell, Anton Volchenkov and Dan Hamhuis.
- Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Could be plenty of trades at the Draft this year according to a half dozen GM’s.
- Aaron Portzline of hte Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets interim coach Claude Noel has had some success since he took over for Ken Hitchcock, leading them to a 10-9-5 record down the stretch, but that doesn’t garantee him the coaching gig for next year. GM Scott Howson will interview at least 6 to 8 other candidates, including Noel. On the list could be Kevin Dineen (Portland AHL), Paul MacLean (Det. asst.), Brent Peterson (Nash. asst.), Kevin McCarthy (Phil. asst.), Scott Steven (NJ asst.), Jim Playfair, Craig MacTavish, Guy Boucher (Hamilton AHL) and Bob Boughner (Windsor OHL).
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators may have lost Alex Kovalev for an indefinite period of time. Kovalev was helped off the ice in the second period with an injured left leg. Kovalev was unable to put any weight on his leg, more should be known today.
- Hockey Roundtable Podcast from the Globe and Mail: End of the line for Sather in NY and MVP talk. (How Sather is still there boogles my mind).
- Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers needed to kick start the rebuiding process hard this summer, and if they don`t, it would be a disappointment. Barnes lists the following players that could be on their way out: Charles Linglet, Dean Arsene, Aaron Johnson, Marc Pouliot, Patrick O’Sullivan, Fernando Pisani, Mike Comrie, Robert Nilsson, Devan Dubnyk, Ryan Potulny, Ryan Jones, Ethan Moreau and Sheldon Souray.
Opening Night Observations

Brian Burke’s makeover was in full effect right off the start with Colton Orr and Jay Rosehill getting into 1st period fights. Mike Komisarek also got into fight, but took 5 minor penalties, 2 of which resulted in a Montreal powerplay goal. Francois Beauchemin looked a little shaky.
From the book of ‘Are You Kidding Me”, my fantasy hockey team just took a hit as the RDS is reporting that my #1 defensemen, Andre Markov, will be out 3-4 months with a torn tendon in his knee. He suffered the injury in the 3rd period after colliding with Carey Price. It was Price’s revenge on me for dropping him before the “Aki Bergala’s” won the Fantasy Hockey Championship last season.
Dany Heatley had an unforgettable San Jose Sharks debut, he was a -3 in 21 minutes of play. His lazy coasting in the defensive end led to one goal. He also fanned on a pass in the slot with a wide open net.
Nabokov and Luongo got off to shaky starts. Nabokov allowed 5 goals on 20 shots. Luongo allowed 4 goals on 22 shots. On the other side of things, Carey Price made 43 saves in a 4-3 OT victory, and Kiprusoff turned aside 39 shots.
