- Adam Jahns via twitter: Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp will be out 3 to 4 weeks with a upper-body injury. Tim Sassone via twitter: Though not confirmed, it is believed that Sharp has a broken bone in his left hand/wrist.
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin and forward JF Jacques will have hearings at 4 and 5 pm today.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: The Ducks have put defenseman Mark Fraser on waivers.
- Edmonton Oilers via twitter: The Oilers have put forward Gilbert Brule on re-entry waivers. Magnus Paajarvi and Ryan O’Marra have been recalled.

- Darren Dreger of TSN: Ryan Smyth’s return to Edmonton is on hold as the health of Gilbert Brule has stalled things. The Kings were going to buyout Brule but teams are not allowed to do that to injured players. Sources are saying Sheldon Souray’s name has come up, but the Kings are said to be not interested. Helene Elliott via twitter: The Kings wouldn’t be able to trade/waive/buy Brule out, which was what they wanted to do to regain some cap space for another left winger. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Source is saying the Flames are back in and serious.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: If the Hurricanes re-sign Jokinen, it will be difficult for them to re-sign Stillman according to GM Rutherford. Rutherford hopes to have some signings done by Monday. The Hurricanes had Ryan Murphy going in their top 6 and were targetting a forward, but couldn’t pass on Murphy when he dropped.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: The NY Rangers didn’t qualify Matt Gilroy, he’ll be a UFA now.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: Grachev asked to be moved, wanted a fresh start. Rangers GM Glen Sather have been shopping him for a year and the Blues were the only team interested.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Ottawa Senators were the only team to inquire about Nikita Filatov, trade came together quickly.
- Tracey Myers via twitter: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman on a Patrick Sharp extension, “I expect us to get him signed. My hope is to get it done quicker than with Brent (Seabrook).”

- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The the trade involving Ryan Smyth to Edmonton for Gilbert Brule and a 5th round pick hit a ‘legal’ snag last night. A Source said Kings GM Dean Lombardi was working trading Brule to another club once the deal goes through. Matheson via twitter: Brule’s health status could be the cause of the trade delay. Helene Elliott via twitter: Kings likely to trade Brule if the trade goes through.
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Robyn Regehr has had a change of heart, he’ll waive his no movement clause and accept a trade to the Buffalo Sabres. “Options changed and yes I did waive. I’m going to Buffalo,” Regehr said in a text to the Calgary Sun. “I have to talk to a bunch of family.” When/if the deal gets done, Paul Byron, Chris Butler and a 2nd round pick could be heading to Calgary for Regehr and Ales Kotalik. Sabres owner Terry Pegula was very influential in convincing Robyn Regehr to waive his no movement.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman has been looking to get Stamkos signed to a deal in the $7 million range. The Flyers have about $10.2 million salary cap space for next season. Stamkos can’t get an offer sheet until July 1st, and would require sending 4 1st round picks if the Lightning didn’t match. Tampa may have trouble matching a outrageous offer due to the big contracts of Vinny Lecavalier (owed $50 million over next 5 years) and Ryan Malone. Reports are saying that the Leafs could throw an offer sheet in the neighborhood of $9 million.
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Yzerman will spend part of next week negotiating with goalie Dwayne Roloson and Mike Smith. Yzerman and Sean Bergenheim’s agent spoke yesterday and there’s still a difference on his worth.
“(I) understand their position and where they’re coming from. I don’t know if there’s anything I can say,” Yzerman said. “We’re in different — there’s not much I can say. We’re not real optimistic at this time.”
Yzerman continue to with Steven Stamkos’ side, and hopes to get him locked up long-term.
- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Leafs VP of hockey operations Dave Nonis,
“We don’t know what July 1 is going to look like yet.”
“We might make some deals between now and then that determine how aggressive we are on that front.
“Are we going to be active? I believe we will regardless of what happens over the next 48 hours here. We are hoping and wanting to sign some players if the price tag makes some sense for us long term.”
“July 1 is a great time to augment your lineup, it’s not a good time to build your team,” Nonis said. “There’s going to be a premium for most of those players.”
“The hunt is ongoing,” Nonis said. “There are a lot of teams looking for the same type of player, which makes it difficult. Not a lot of centres are being moved but we’re still in a good position with assets we can give up.”
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Jeff Carter was blindsided by the trade to Columbus. Carter’s agent Rick Curran said that he met with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren and was assured that there was no truth to the rumors that Carter could be traded. Carter signed an 11-year. $58 million deal with the Flyers in November.
“(Carter) is disappointed,” Curran said, “but that’s no reflection on Columbus. It’s more that he made a commitment to Philly.”
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Penguins GM Ray Shero met with Tyler Kennedy’s side yesterday and there is more optimism that a deal could get done.
- HockeyProspect via twitter: Was told that the Flyers would have taken Duncan Siemens with the 8th overall pick until Sean Couturier dropped to them.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Brian Campbell will save about $700,000 in income taxes by going to Florida.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Portzline was told that the Blue Jackets had no discussions with the Blackhawks about defenseman Brian Campbell.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Panthers prospect Erik Gudbranson told Team 1200 Ottawa that he’s close to a deal with the team.

- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Lou Lamoriello said that the Devils haven’t put a claim on Seldon Souray, and won’t be.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: Marian Gaborik has a concussion.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Even in Calgary, Bernstein is hearing the LA Kings are pressing hard for Ales Hemsky.
- Rob Rossi via twitter: Penguins source is saying the asking price for Ales Hemsky is huge.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Dallas Stars and Brad Richards have quietly been having talks, though there hasn’t been much progress. It’s more likely the Oilers will move Dustin Penner, Gilbert Brule, Jim Vandermeer and Ladislav Smid than Ales Hemsky. The Islanders are looking to trade Radek Martinek, Bruno Gervais and Zenon Konopka. Expect the Avalanche to make a pitch of Tomas Vokoun who’ll be a UFA in the off-season. Rangers are looking Filip Kuba. Scouts have called Sheldon Souray’s performance in the AHL as “brutal”. Even if Pascal Leclair plays again this season, his NHL career may come to an end as nobody may want to sign the UFA. The Canadiens, Sharks and Canucks have interest in John-Michael Liles.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: “If there are three teams interested in Ottawa RW Alexei Kovalev there are three GM’s who haven’t been watching him all year.”
- Eric Stevens of the OC Register: Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller was was placed on the IR earlier this week after another bout of dizziness and lightheadedness, is “believed to have a balance issue according to a team spokesman.” He is to meet a physical therapist tomorrow and team doctors have ruled out a concussion.
- Kent Youngblood of the Star-Tribune: Mikko Koivu injured his left hand blocking a shot in the 1st period of Friday’s game. It’s not known at the moment how long he’ll be out, more should be known tomorrow. If the Wild look to make a move for a center, they could look at, Jason Arnott, Tim Connolly or Rob Niedermayer.
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: If the Sabres improve their play they may become buyers, but if they play like they did against the Leafs and Blues, they may look to the future. They have the expiring contracts of Tim Connolly and Steve Montador, and haven’t had any contract talks with either. Team captain Craig Rivet could be moved.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch confirms that Mike Fisher’s full no-movement clause ended after last season, he was to give the team a 10 team no-trade list but never did. There were reports that he would have to submit a list before he’s able to be dealt but hat may not be the case, and he’s not that worried about it. So it looks like the Senators would be able to trade him anywhere. Fisher wants to stay in Ottawa, and it would take a good deal to move him. The Sens are more likely to deal Chris Phillips and Jarkko Ruutu. “I really don’t think they’ll trade Mike Fisher,” said a league executive. “They’ll talk about it, but they’ll want a lot in return. Good players are hard to find. You should keep them. You can’t trade everybody.”
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Colorado Avalanche coach Joe Sacco on Peter Forsberg, “The ball is in his court.” Forsberg practiced again yesterday. Sources say Forsberg has experienced some discomfort with his foot, but is using a brace in attempt to get a better fit in his skate. A decision may come by Sunday. Peter Mueller practiced yesterday but no timetable is set. Ryan O’Reilly (shoulder) could return on Saturday.
- Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun: The Oilers will have to decide soon if they want to keep or trade Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner. There are centers and defenseman in the draft that could interest the Oilers, so collecting some draft picks could be option. They will listen to offers for Gilbert Brule, Andrew Cogliano, Kurtis Foster, Colin Fraser, J.F. Jacques, Nikolai Khabibulin, Steve MacIntyre, Ladislav Smid, Jason Strudwick and Jim Vandermeer. Jones thinks the Oilers could get more for Penner than Hemsky. Jones thinks they should keep Hemsky and trade Penner.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Tomas Vokoun hasn’t had any contract extension offers from the Florida Panthers, but he does hope to talk to GM Dale Tallon when they get back. Vokoun has a no-movement clause. Stephen Weiss and Bryan McCabe have no-trade clauses, with Weiss not knowing he had one until a few weeks ago. Winger Evgeny Dadonov will be out at last a month with a broken finger.
- Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Brian Burke has said he wants to negotiate a contract extension for Clarke MacArthur. MacArthur is on a 1 year deal at $1.1 million after the Thrashers walked away from a $2.4 million arbitration ruling. He’s leading the Maple Leafs in scoring with 41 points, and will be looking for a nice raise.
“We have not approached him yet. That’s something we’ll get to in the next little while. You have to figure out what a fair salary is for a player who has had a breakthrough year,” said the GM.
“He’s not a player we intend to move at the deadline, whether he has signed an extension or not at that point.”
Responds MacArthur: “I’d love to be a Leaf for the rest of my career, but that’s up to them.”
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks have sent Sami Salo to the AHL on a 3 game conditioning stint, and should return to the Canucks next week. With Alex Edler out 2-3 months, the Canucks won’t have to move any salary when Salo returns.
- Ken Belson of the NY Times: One NJ Devil owner (Jeff Vanderbeek) wants to expand, 2 minority owners may be looking to sell their shares.

- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The future of Mathieu Schneider is still up in the air after he left the team last week for ‘personal reasons’. Schneider has been the Canucks 6th-7th Dman this year and last Friday he was “Removed from the lineup to make way for Aaron Rome, Schneider bolted from the dressing room without talking to reporters, had an animated discussion with Canucks’ player development guru Dave Gagner, the defenceman’s contemporary, and left. He hasn’t been seen since.” I’m guessing he’s pondering retirement or if he’d like the Canucks to move him somewhere else.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Both Pascal Leclaire and Chris Neil will return to the Senators lineup tonight against the Penguins.
- Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Victor Stalberg, fresh off of his AHL recall, scoring 2 goals in 3 games, is on the shelf with a shoulder injury. Richard Wallin will be in the lineup tonight in his place. Wallin has 2 assists in 26 games, mostly on the 4th. Stalberg’s scored the 2 goals while playing on the 4th line.
- Brandon Hall of the Boston Globe: Milan Lucic is still eying Jan. 1st Winter Classic as his return date.
- Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun: Ryan Poultny has been promoted to the Oilers #1 line with Dustin Penner and Gilbert Brule … and why are they in last place in the Western Conference? And here I thought the Maple Leafs top line looked bad.
