State of the Chicago Blackhawks: NHL Trade Deadline Edition
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 25th, 2012
Today is the 1st installment of our expanded NHL Trade Deadline coverage. We’ll be posting team outlooks leading up to trade deadline over the next couple weeks from a variety of contributing writers.
Written by Tab Bamford of TheFourthPeriod.com and can be found on twitter at @The1Tab
The Chicago Blackhawks are in the mix for the best record in the Western Conference, but are equally close to fourth place in the Central Division. With a good, young core locked up and over $5 million in cap space, the Blackhawks will be buyers at the deadline.
What will be the Blackhawks wants/needs?
1. Top-four defenseman
The Hawks have one of the best top pairs in the league with Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook, but have been searching for the right formula all season in the wake of Brian Campbell being traded to Florida during the draft.
Nick Leddy’s developing nicely, but has been better when held under 20 minutes per game over the last month. Meanwhile, Niklas Hjalmarsson appears to have peaked as a number 4-5 defenseman who excels at blocking shots and killing penalties, but has not taken the next step in his development yet.
Some players the Hawks might target include Tim Gleason in Carolina, Hal Gill and/or Chris Campoli in Montreal, and, if Brian Burke puts him on the market, Cody Franson.
Sunday morning rumors and injuries: the Lightning, Canadiens, Weber, van Riemsdyk, Koivu, Skinner, DiPietro and NHL Sources Say Video
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on January 15th, 2012
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning goalies Dwayne Roloson and Mathieu Garon have a combined GAA of 3.37. Some want the Lightning to trade for Evgeni Nabokov or Antero Niittymaki, or any other goalie who’ll be a UFA at the end of the year. Minor league goalie Dustin Tokarski is playing well in the AHL, but he’s not the answer right now. Trading for guys like Cory Schneider or Jonathan Bernier usually don’t happen during the season, and would cost a significant player/prospect and a high draft pick. In the offseason they could also look at free agent goalies like Brian Elliott and Josh Harding.
- Toronto Sun: The Canadiens may not be done dealing. Defenseman Hal Gill has seen his ice time decrease as of late and may interest a cup contender who is looking for a big stay at home Dman. Forwards Travis Moen and Andrei Kostitsyn will be UFAs at the end of the season. Defenseman Yannick Weber may get some interest someone who is looking to boost their PP.
- Randy Miller via twitter: Miller thinks it may cost the Flyers James van Riemsdyk, Sean Couturier and a top pick for Predators defenseman Shea Weber. The Preds would be aiming for that.
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk is out with a concussion. “James was hit in the head in each of our last two games,” Holmgren said in a statement. “He reported yesterday not feeling like himself. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion.”
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild center Mikko Koivu left last night’s game in the 1st period after taking a hit from Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka. Koivu appears to have a left shoulder injury. He left the arena with a sling on.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner is likely to return today against the Capitals.
- Brian Compton via twitter: Islanders Rick DiPietro is expected to miss 10 weeks after his sports hernia surgery. His knee also has swelling.
- HNIC Hotstove link: The panel talks about the Cammalleri trade and Sidney Crosby.
- NHL Sources Say: Talk on next year’s Winter Classic, All-Star game captains and fantasy draft, Blues ownership situation, the Oilers rink situation, and Zach Parise.
Injury notes on Cammalleri, Upshall, Samuelsson, Grabovski, MacArthur, Luongo, Goligoski, Bogosian and Slater
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL Injuries, NHL News on November 16th, 2011
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens have called up defenseman Frederic St. Denis as Hal Gill may not be able to go due to a flu, and Jaroslav Spacek is doubtful with an upper-body injury. Forward Mike Cammalleri expects to return to the lineup, a final decision will be made today. Andrei Markov practiced with the team for the 2nd consecutive day.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers winger Scottie Upshall will be out 6-8 weeks with a hip injury. They hope he won’t need surgery. Mikael Samuelsson should be joing the Panthers soon. He’s had some visa issues and hasn’t played with Panthers yet as he’s had complications from his sports hernia surgery.
- Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star: Maple Leafs lost 2/3′s of their 2nd line last night. Mikhail Grabovski left with a lower-body injury and Clarke MacArthur left with an upper-body injury. David Alter via twitter: If MacArthur and Grabovski are out, don’t expect the Maple Leafs to call up Joe Colborne as he’s coming off a lower-body injury.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: The Canucks will start Cory Schneider tonight as Roberto Luongo is out with an upper-body injury. Coach Alain Vigneault said the injury was not serious.
“With what happened in the Buffalo-Boston game there, I’m going to just say it’s an upper body injury,” Vigneault said. “We’re not quite sure what’s allowed on the goaltenders and what’s not allowed.
“I’m very serious. I always in the regular season tell you what’s going on with the players.”
Luongo was hit in the mask with a Mark Streit shot on Sunday. Since Vigneault said it was an upper-body injury, it fuel speculation that he’s suffering from concussion-like symptoms. He also did the splits on the rebound, so it’s possible that he tweaked his groin.
- Dallas Morning News: The Stars have put Alex Goligoski on the IR with broken thumb.
- Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian and forward Jim Slater were both injured during Monday’s game, and their status for Thursday is uncertain.
Kane, Hamhuis, and Malhotra will get into first pre-season game … Police may have name of banana thrower … Cap could effect Couturier … Laich’s versatility
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 28th, 2011
- Tim Sassone of the Dailly Herald: Patrick Kane will get into his first pre-season game tonight. He’ll be centering Marian Hossa and Andrew Brunette. Patrick Sharp skated on his own for the 3rd straight day yesterday. “He’s progressing well,” Joel Quenneville said. “We’re very happy with where he’s at. Each and every day he’s able to do a little bit more. We’re very encouraged.” The Blackhawks camp roster is now at 31.
- Debora Van Brenk of the Toronto Sun: London Police think they have a name of a person who they think may have tossed the banana at Wayne Simmonds last week. They haven’t arrested anyone, which was being reported by some. Police should release more details today. A banana was tossed towards the ice earlier in the game but it didn’t make it to the ice.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Wayne Simmonds won’t be disciplined for his alleged homophobic slur towards Sean Avery as the NHL couldn’t substantiate what was said on the ice.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau is still tinkering with lines, especially when it comes to Brooks Laich, whether he’ll be on the wing or at center. “As it stands right now we’re still up in the air, whether would it be center or wing with him,” Boudreau said. “We just want to get him in a couple more games at both positions for him to feel comfortable at either one, to start taking more faceoffs in case it was center that he’s playing.”
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Recently signed Chris Campoli found himself partnered with Josh Gorges. Hal Gill and P.K. Subban round out the other top 4 while Andrei Markov is out. Markov is still rehabbing and it’s unlikely he’ll be able to go for the opener.
- Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis will get into his 1st game since Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final tonight. Canucks forward Manny Malhotra will get into the game as well, his first since his offseason eye procedure. Defenseman Aaron Rome will miss 4 to 6 weeks with a broken finger. Nolan Baumgartner will be out 4 weeks with a broken foot. Steve Pinizzotto is out indefinitely with a dislocated shoulder.
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Carchidi thinks that salary cap constraints may hurt Sean Couturier’s chances of making the Flyers.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen had a minor knee procedure and will miss at least the first couple game of the season. Jose Theodore is the teams starter, and they may keep Tyler Plante over Jacob Markstrom. They want Markstrom to get a lot of playing time in the NHL.
- John Down of the Calgary Herald: Steve Staios is on a tryout with the Islanders and hopes to get a contract. He’s 64 games shy of 1,000.
Blues re-sign Berglund … Canadiens bring Gill back for 1 more year … Blackhawks sign 3 … Duck sign 1, lose 1
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on June 1st, 2011
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The St. Louis Blues have re-signed Patrik Berglund to a 2 year deal worth $4.5 million. This past season Berglund scored 22 goals and added 30 assists for 52 points.
“I believe, coming out of that first contract, the shorter-term deals are both beneficial to the team and the player,” Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said Tuesday. “I think what this does, it allows Patrik to define himself as a player. He’ll have five years of NHL experience when this deal is done and he’ll be entering that next phase of his career. I think the two-year deal really helps solidify his position not only on our team but in the league.”
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed defenseman Hal Gill to a 1 year contract worth $2.25 million. Gill will continue to mentor PK Subban. The Canadiens are expected to re-sign Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges. They likely don’t have the cap space to bring James Wisniewski and Roman Hamrlik. Brent Sopel, Paul Mara and Alexandre Picard are likely not to return.
- Chicago Sun-Times: The Chicago Blackhawks have signed Swedish goalie Alexander Salak to a 2 year contract. They have also signed Byron Froese and David Gilbert to 3 year deals. Froese was a 2009 4th round pick, and recorded 43 goals last year with the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL. Gilbert was a 2009 7th round pick.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: The Anaheim Ducks have signed Finnish prospect Sami Vatanen to an entry level deal. Vatanen is expected to remain in Finland for at least 1 more season. 2009 6th round pick Scott Valentine rejected the Ducks final offer and could head back into the draft if he doesn’t change his mind on the contract.
Bergeron needs medical clearance … Contract talks for Gorges and Markov next … Coaching candidates
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 19th, 2011
- Steve Conroy of the Boston Bruins: Patrice Bergeron just needs medical clearance before he can get back in the Bruins lineup. He took contact at yesterday’s practice, and will take part in this mornings practice before deciding if he’s in or not. He’d most likely center Mark Recchi and Brad Marchand. Shawn Thornton would likely be the odd man out. Tyler Seguin would likely remain with Chris Kelly and Michael Ryder.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: If Drew Miller is back with the Red Wings next year or not, it will come down to price. He made $650,000 this past season, and was a valuable penalty killer. He added 10 goals and 8 assists in 67 games. “Hopefully we can work something out. I’d definitely like to stay — I mean, it’s a great organization here. They have a lot of depth, but that’s what happens when you have a good team.”
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens now have 3 defenseman under contract for next season, Alexei Yemelin, PK Subban and Jaroslav Spacek. Negotiations for Josh Gorges and Andrei Markov are next. Because of the salary cap, it’s unlikely that James Wisniewski or Brent Sopel will be back. Hal Gill and Roman Hamrlik could be back at the right price.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Salary cap issues could prevent the Penguins from re-signing Tyler Kennedy. They’d like to keep him, but the RFA may be in the $1.5 – $2 million range. He had 21 goals and 45 points last season. Kennedy could be traded before the team has to send him a qualifying offer.
- Tony Marinaro via twitter: Bob Boughner stepped down as the Blue Jackets assistant coach. Marinaro is hearing that Florida or Dallas could be possible teams he could coach.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Oscar Moller update. He’s expected to sign 2 year deal with a team in Sweden, and the Kings would almost certain retain the RFA’s rights. To retain his rights they would just have to extend a qualifying offer by June 27th.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Dave Cameron (Mississauga OHL head coach) is being strongly considered as the next Ottawa Senators head coach. Minnesota and Florida are possible destinations for former NY Islanders head coach Scott Gordon. A source tells Strickland to not completely write off Brad Richards to Tampa. Strickland (and myself) doesn’t see it happening. A $4-5 million price tag for Jaromir Jagr could be a hefty price if a potential 3rd line NHL winger. Strickland is told that Mike Modano will officially retire at some point this off-season. Chris Osgood could do the same.
Crosby confirms setback … Markov wants 3 years … Canadiens off-season notes … Knuble and Wideman update
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 29th, 2011
- Will DePaoli via twitter: Penguins center Sidney Crosby confirms that he suffered a setback last week, and that he suffered a concussion at the Winter Classic. Crosby also believes that the Victor Hedman hit gave him his 2nd concussion in 5 days.
- Tony Marinaro via twitter: Back in March, the Canadiens offered Andrei Markov a 1 year deal for $5.75 million. Markov is looking for a 3 year deal, Canadiens offering 1.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens assistant coach Kirk Muller will become the head coach of the Dallas Stars, but it’s on hold as the team awaits new owners. GM Pierre Gautier will make UFA Andrei Markov and RFA Josh Gorges priorities. Hal Gill is also a UFA and will likely be back along side PK Subban. Scott Gomez carries a $7.37 million cap hit next year and they have the option of biting the bullet and sending him to the AHL. RFA Max Pacioretty is healthy and is in line for a multi-year contract. Andrei Kostitsyn and Benoit Pouliot are RFA’s and likely won’t be priorities. Due to salary cap constraints they likely won’t be a major player in the free agent market.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals Mike Knuble and Dennis Wideman remain optimistic that they’ll be able to return to the lineup at some point during this series.
“I think that’s very realistic,” said Knuble, who started to take hard shots in practice. “When that’s going to be I don’t know. There are a lot of factors. And so it kind of depends on how everything is going. If they keep winning, you don’t want to upset the boat. But at the same time I’m anxious to get back in. I’ll get back in as soon as I can. It’s tough to watch, but at the same time it’s fun to watch.”
“The range of motion is getting better, the skating is getting better, just gotta get in shape. Get a little more power in the leg and hopefully make a comeback shortly,” Wideman said. “We did a little skate there at the end. I mean, I’m still not 100 percent but it’s definitely a whole lot closer than it was a couple days ago.”
- Katie Carrera via twitter: Wideman and Knuble did skate today but not on with the regulars. Tom Poti not on the ice for 2nd straight day
- Ian Mendes via twitter: Jeff Carter wasn’t on the ice for the Flyers morning practice.
Kariya to play a part in Selanne’s decision … Off-season notes on the Blackhawks, Kings and Canadiens
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 28th, 2011
- JP Hoornstra of the InsideSocal: Paul Kariya could play a part in Teemu Selanne’s plan to play another season or not. Selanne has said he wants to know if Kariya would come back to Anaheim if he decides to play next year. “Obviously all the years that I had with Paul, it was just unbelievable,” Selanne said. “I talked to him yesterday and we’re going to meet next week. We didn’t even talk about injuries yet but I want to talk to him about how he’s doing, what he’s thinking and maybe go surf with him.”
If he retires, Selanne said he would be at peace his career ending now. “I think so,” he said. “I tried to play like I left everything there. That’s how you should play anyway, every season. You can’t just win the Stanley Cup every year. That would be awesome, but it doesn’t work like that. I really believe we had enough tools to go further, but we lost.”
If he comes back, it will be in Anaheim. “I haven’t thought about having a chance to go somewhere else,” he said. “This is my place for sure.”
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Despite being knocked out by the Canucks in the first round, there isn’t a lot of holes to fill in the Blackhawks lineup. One area they need to add is size and sandpaper. They have to make decisions on RFAs Troy Brouwer, Viktor Stalberg, Chris Campoli and Jake Dowell, either to re-sign or use as trade bait. Re-signing RFA’s Cory Crawford and Michal Frolik is a priority. Ryan Johnson may be only UFA to return (if the price is right) out of a group of Tomas Kopecky, Marty Turco, Fernando Pisani and Jordan Hendry. Kopecky may have priced himself out of Chicago’s plans, he made $1.2 million this past season. The Blackhawks could look at dealing one of their “big-ticket players”, possibly Niklas Hjalmarsson and his $3.5 million cap hit.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The Kings think that Dustin Penner needs to improve his conditioning for next season. Winger Justin Williams needs to decide if he wants to have surgery on his shoulder or not. GM Lombardi has to decide if he wants Michal Handzus and Alexei Ponikarovsky back, coach Murray does. They must also re-sign RFA’s Drew Doughty, Wayne Simmonds, Trevor Lewis, Brad Richardson, Alec Martinez and Oscar Moller. Moller’s future with the Kings may not be bright as he scratched for Scott Parse who had been out for 5 months. Lombardi on Doughty, “Part of this is do we go short term with Doughty for now and keep it down or try and go long-term.”
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens blueline could have a different look next year as they have 6 UFA’s. Who of Andrei Markov, Roman Hamrlik, James Wisniewski, Brent Sopel and Hal Gill will be back?
Coyotes staying, Thrashers moving to Winnipeg? Carter close to returning … Gillis fined … Kings Murray wants Handzus and Ponikarovsky back
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 27th, 2011
- Darren Dreger via twitter: “Ongoing negotiations to keep the NHL in Glendale. Atlanta is quickly becoming a real option for Wpg next season.” Will DePaoli via twitter: If the ‘Thrashers’ go to the Western Conference, there is chatter that the NHL wants to move the Red Wings to the Eastern Conference.
- Paul Turenne of the Winnipeg Sun: Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz said today that he doesn’t believe that the Phoenix Coyotes are heading to Winnipeg, and that they should start looking at another franchises. “Katz said his belief is based on his knowledge of contractual obligations the team holds in Arizona, which if broken, could result in legal action.”
- TSN.ca: Sources are saying that Atlanta is waiting for the fate of Coyotes to be determined. If the Coyotes are going to stay in Phoenix, there is a chance that the Thrashers will start talking with True North (group interested in purchasing Coyotes) and move them to Winnipeg. The source added that when it comes to relocation, there isn’t anywhere to go. If the deal with the NHL/Glendale/Hulsizer falls through, they’ll look at moving the Coyotes to Winnipeg and work at keeping the Thrashers in Atlanta. They hope to have the Phoenix situation resolved by the end of next week.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers forward Jeff Carter is getting closer to returning and GM Paul Holgren is optimistic that Carter could play in the Eastern Conference Finals.
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Kings Terry Murray says that he wants UFA’s Michal Handzus and Alexei Ponikarovsky to return next year. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Dennis isn’t buying this. Handzus and Ponikarovsky would only return at fractional money. Likely at center next year are Kopitar, Schenn, Stoll, Lewis.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Canucks GM Mike Gillis was fined an undisclosed, significant amount of money for his comments regarding officiating before Game 7.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres forward Jason Pominville suffered a leg gash in Game 5 that sliced a tendon, he’ll be sidelined 4-6 months. Tim Connolly’s undisclosed injury would have kept him out at least 6 weeks.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Lou Lamoriello says that he wants to keep defenseman Andy Greene. If Greene were to receive the right offer he’d forgo free agency and re-sign with the club. “This is the choice. This is where I want to be,” Greene told The Star-Ledger today. “If there is an offer there that is good and I felt was right, I’d definitely take it. I’m not dragging my feet waiting for July 1st. We’ll let it play out.” Greene has spoken to Lamorielle but no offer has been made yet.
- Jack Todd of Faceoff.com: Todd thinks that Hal Gill is such a calming factor for PK Subban, they have to bring him back on another 1 year contract.
Perry was almost traded to Oilers … Injury notes on Spacek, Lecavalier, Clowe, Green, Hamhuis, Miller, Havlat and 3 Senators
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 5th, 2011
- Randy Youngman of the OC Register: In 2003-04, the Anaheim Ducks almost traded Corey Perry to the Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks were prepared to send Perry and a 2004 1st round pick to the Oilers for center Mike Comrie. Comrie was holding out, and the Oilers were wanting Comrie to repay $2.5 million of his original signing bonus. When he didn’t repay the signing bonus, the deal fell through, and he was later traded to Philly. The Ducks used the 2004 1st round pick to select Ladislav Smid.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman Roman Hamrlik, a UFA at season’s end, hinted that it could be his last year in a Canadiens uniform. After the media named him the “Jacques Beauchamp Trophy” winner (goes to the unsung hero), “I’ve been doing this a long and especially (since) this is my last year, it’s an honour.” … “I know I’ve been playing with lots of good players this season. You guys had a choice and it’s a big honour for me.” P.K. Subban and Jaroslav Spacek are the only defenseman under contract for next year. Hamrlik, Andrei Markov, James Wisniewski, Hal Gill, Brent Sopel and Paul Mara are all UFA’s.
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Quote of the Year: Jaroslav Spacek on how he knew his March 4th knee surgery was a success, “I woke up with two knees and no big boobs.”A decision if he’ll play tonight won’t be made until a couple hours before the game.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe left last night’s game after 3 shifts with what coach Todd McLellan called a lower body tweak after the game. He was being evaluated after the game and more could be known today.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman Mike Green and Tom Poti didn’t travel with the team to Toronto for tonight’s game. Green took part in full practice yesterday but didn’t take any contact. He hasn’t ruled out getting into a game before the playoffs start. Alex Semin had a maintenance day yesterday to help heal some nagging injuries. Boudreau said there is a “chance” he could miss 1 of the team’s 3 remaining games.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: Taylor Hall was asked to join Team Canada for the World Championships, but won’t be good enough shape to go. Sense around New Jersey is that they will do all they can to re-sign Zach Parise, but will he want to stay?
- AP on NHL.com: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller took some shots yesterday at practice. He still thinks he’s day-to-day and hopes to play on Saturday against the Blue Jackets. Jhonas Enroth will start tonight against the Lightning.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Rangers forward Chris Drury is hoping to get back in the lineup for the playoffs.
- Renaud Lavoie via twitter: Vincent Lecavalier said he will have no choice and will wear a visor when he returns. He may continue to wear it next year if he can adjust to it. TB Lightning via twitter: There was no structural damage to Lecavalier’s eye, and he’ll be a game time decision today.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Wild GM Chuck Fletcher said that Martin Havlat is doubtful to play in the final 3 games, as he has an upper body injury.
- Chris Vivalmore via twitter: Thrashers defenseman Tobias Enstrom won’t travel with the team to Nashville and New York.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Senators winger Daniel Alfredsson and defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Erik Karlsson are all done for the season.
- Ben Kuzman via twitter: Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis (out with a concussion) skated on his own yesterday.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: It’s sounding like Oilers center Shawn Horcoff is done for the year after having a setback last week.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs will have about $15 million in salary cap space next season after they re-sign RFA’s Tyler Bozak, Clarke MacArthur, James Reimer, and Luke Schenn. The Leafs are more than one player away, so spending a lot money on Brad Richards may not be the right move. It’s unlikely the Leafs will trade some of their young talent for expensive veterans. If Richards (31) is looking for a 3 year deal, he might be a fit for the Leafs, but he’ll be looking for longer term. Paul Stastny, if made available, could be a player the Leafs would be interested in. Cox wonders if Burke could try to package his 2 1st round picks and a Kulemin or Gunnarson to move up in the draft and grab a top prospect (top 4), but that would tough.
Flyers looking for a winger … Roster moves from Leafs coming … Regehr could be trade target … LA needs scoring … Why Leafs didn’t get Wolski
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 11th, 2011
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: The Flyers lost out on Jamie Langenbrunner after offering the Devils 2 draft picks (I think the deal more to do with Langenbrunner wanting to go Dallas than what was the better offer). The Flyers may still be looking to add a piece, they don’t have a 2nd round this year, and may be reluctant to trade their first, haven’t had one in several years. They seem fine along the blueline and in net, but could use another winger. The Flyers have about $3.86 in acquisition space. If the Coyotes are out of it and want to deal soon to be UFA Scottie Upshall, the Flyers could be interested. The 2012 Winter Classic may be played on Dec. 31st so that it would be played on a Saturday.
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: With JS Giguere and Mike Brown returning to the Maple Leafs on Thursday, James Reimer and Joey Crabb will likely find themselves the odd men out. Clarke MacArthur, who signed a 1 year $1.1 million deal in the off-season, confirms that he’d like to sign a contract extension with the team, there have been no talks to this point.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Scouts from the Lightning, Flyers, Canadiens, Bruins and Pittsburgh were at the Kings-Maple Leafs game last night.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein thinks that Robyn Regehr is being targeted by teams.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: LA Kings coach Murray says, ‘We need more scoring’. He’ll need to bring in more offense if he thinks the Kings are a contender.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Many have wondered why the Leafs didn’t trade for Wojtek Wolski (sent to the Rangers for Michal Rozsival yesterday). The Coyotes called the Leafs about Francois Beauchemin before the Leafs extended holiday roster freeze. The Leafs would have wanted a draft pick along with Wolski for Beauchemin, the Rangers didn’t require a pick.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: The NY Islanders could look to move Mark Eaton, but don’t have much else to offer. The Devils are still looking to deal. The Leafs, Flames and Panthers could also be sellers. The Blue Jackets, Senators and Sabres could be looking to deal, but may be looking for players as there are jobs on the line. The Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets are basically the only teams that would take on salary. The Penguins, Blackhawks, Red Wings and Bruins don’t have a lot of cap space. The Hawks and Bruins have lots of draft picks. With the Flyers keeping Ian Laperriere on LTIR and rather than retiring, saves the Flyers $1.167 million in cap space this year and next, as it’s an over-35 contract. The Canadiens only have 2 defenseman under contract for next season, JK Subban and Jaro Spacek. Hal Gill approached the Canadiens about a contract but was told to wait.
- Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets goalie Steve Mason suffered a groin injury on Friday and may not be ready until this weekend. The Jackets have recalled David LeNeveu on an emergency basis.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Chris Osgood will have surgery today for his ‘sports hernia’ and will be out at least 6 weeks, up to 8 weeks if there is a significant tear.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars have put Brandon Segal on waivers, and should know by noon today if anyone claimed him.
Kings to go after Kovalchuk or Marleau? Canadiens defense for Game 6 …
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on May 9th, 2010
- Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove: Maclean, LeBrun, Healy, and Mad Mike discuss the Phoenix situation, LA to go after Kovalchuk
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Los Angeles Kings plan A this off-season is to attempt to sign Ilya Kovalchuk, with plan B being Patrick Marleau if he isn’t re-signed by the Sharks. If the Kings miss out on both, they’ll look to bring in forward(s) through trade. The have plenty of assest and some extra cap room. Rumors are that Kovalchuk could get a $12 million offer from the KHL. Anton Volchenkov and Alexander Frolov are also expected to get offers from the KHL. Contract talks between Bobby Ryan’s camp and the Anaheim Ducks have started up this past week, and they are also considering moving Ryan to center. Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer are still undecided if they are going to play next season or not. Niedermayer is expected to decide by the Draft.
- The Globe and Mail: Montreal Canadiens defenseman Hal Gill will be evaluated today after have the back of his leg accidently stepped on by Chris Kunitz in the 3rd period of last nights game. He did skate off by himself, but did not return.
- Elliotte Friedman via Twitter: The Canadiens are trying to find a knee brace for Andre Markov, who is out with a torn ACL, that would allow him to play in Game 6. Gauthier would not comment on the situation.
- The Ottawa Sun: Results from a fan survey involving the Ottawa Senators. 92% want Jonathan Cheechoo gone, 71% would like to get rid of Alex Kovalev. 75% think the Sens should trade Brian Lee while they can. 44% think they should trade Jason Spezza. 74% of fans think they should keep Brian Elliot and 52% think Pascal Leclaire should be dealt.
