Staal-Rangers by Friday? Nash to RW? New captains in Mon and Van plus more NHL rumors

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers and Marc Staal continue to work towards a deal that could happen by the start of training camp on Friday. The contract they are working on could be longer than 4 years. The Rangers own his rights for 4 years (would be a restricted free agent), so going over 4 years the Rangers would have to spend a bit more money to buy back some of his unrestricted free agent years. Comparisons could be Shea Weber ($4.5 million), Ryan Suter ($3.5 million) and Brent Seabrook ($3.5 million), though none of those deals bought in to the UFA years.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: The New Jersey Devils can appeal the League’s decision by going to the NHL Board of Governors.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Roberto Luongo gave up the Canucks team captaincy, with possibly Henrik Sedin taking over the duties. Ryan Kesler is also an option for the team.
  • Aaron Portzline via twitter: Rick Nash will start training camp on right wing, but coach Scott Arniel said not to read into much in the first couple days of camp.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Vesa Toskala turned down a deal from the Calgary Flames earlier this summer that would have paid over $1 million. He turned it down as he wants to a number 1 goalie. A Swedish team had interest in him, but the asking price was too high. Other European options are available.
  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks have invited Peter Schaefer to training camp. Schaefer was bought out by the Bruins before last season. He’ll battle for a 3rd – 4th line spot.
  • Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Daymond Langkow hasn’t been fully cleared for the Calgary Flames training camp. Langkow has been recovering for over 5 months from a fractured vertebrae at the base of his neck after being hit with a puck.
  • Toronto Sun: The Canadian government may not put up the roughly $180 million needed for a NHL arena in Quebec City. Prime Minister Steven Harper said there are other NHL and CFL teams that are looking for some money. “We’re all fans of professional sports, we know they’re important to our communities,” Harper said. “But professional sports are first and foremost the responsibility of the private sector.”
  • Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier has been under fire from fans and media this summer. The trading of Jaroslav Halak didn’t sit well with some, and the QMJHL commissioner said the Canadiens “don’t take the scouting and signing of Quebec-born players seriously enough.” Andrei Markov and Brian Gionta are the leading candidates to be the teams next captain. Lars Ellar (brought over in the Halak trade) and PK Subban could crack the lineup. The Canadiens have 20 players on 1-way contracts.

World Hockey Summit … Kovalchuk side/Devils meet with League … Mitchell deciding soon … Luongo out as Captain?

L

  • EJ Hradek via twitter: Meeting at the League office in New York yesterday involving Kovalchuk’s agent, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek.
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks GM Mike Gillis will be looking into the the team’s captaincy between now and the beginning of training camp. Roberto Luongo is still the team’s captain (I’ve never understood that move), but Henrik Sedin could be ready to take over.
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Joffrey Lupul has a re-occurrence of a blood infection in his back and will miss the beginning of training camp, and may not be ready for the start of the season. Lupul is taking antibotics and is not able to do any excercise for the next 4 weeks. He’ll be re-evaluted on September 20th.
  • Jeff Marek of CBCSports: A summary of some happenings at the World Hockey Summit. Slava Fetisov says that Russia isn’t interested in transfer agreements with the NHL but will work together to go the game worldwide. Daniel Afredsson says the larger ice surfaces creates a slower game, perfers NHL ice size. Yzerman said the lack of arenas in Florida has hurt the development of the sport.

And at the end of Day 1, many of us came away with the same question: What is this?

I’d like to say it was a discussion but it really wasn’t. Hockey personalities from across the globe, representing a myriad of different interests, had their say on their “sweet-spot” topics and then answered a couple of questions. Each session lasted no longer than 30 minutes.

  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Now that Bryan Little has signed, the Atlanta Thrashers will now focus on re-signing Niclas Bergfors. GM Rick Dudley also said the team has touched base with Lee Stempniak. They may leave a roster spots open for young players like Patrice Cormier and Alexander Burmistrov.

Around the Boards: Filatov moved at the Draft? Leafs losing trade value, Franzen back before Olympics? Hossa day-to-day

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: He doesn’t think the Blackhawks should make a run at Kovalchuk. Henrik Sedin could be Hart trophy winner. Tyler Myers in the lead for Calder Trophy. The Blue Jackets could move Nikita Filatov at entry draft for a top 4 defenceman.
  • David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: The mounting loses for the Maple Leafs are doing little to the trade value for their veteran players. Players that might have had some trade value, Stajan, Hagman, and Ponikarovsky have struggled recently. Tomas Kaberle is basically on the only Leaf that could fetch a nice package, a 1st round plus a top prospect or 2, or a top 6 forward, though he most likely won’t be dealt.
  • Larry Brooks of the USA Today: Brooks thinks the Rangers should rebuild and trade off UFA’s Vinny Prospal and Christopher Higgens and RFA Dan Girardi.
  • Helen St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Johan Franzen thinks he might be able to return to the Red Wings lineup before the Olympics.
  • Jimmy Murphy of NESN (via Twitter): The Boston Bruins are looking at what the Oilers and Hurricanes have to trade. They have interest in Ray Whitney.
  • Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune: Marian Hossa missed Sunday’s game with a lower-body injury. He’s listed as day-to-day, which coach Quenneville hopeful that he’ll be back Thrusday. Cam Barker has been out the last 4 games, and might be ready for Thursday.
  • Kevin Allen of the USA Today:
    • The Thrashers could be looking to move both Kovalchuk and Kari Lehtonen, who’s close to returning.
    • Tomas Kaberle may give list of teams he might accept a trade to Brian Burke at the trade deadline.
    • Teams that could be interested in Teemu Selanne: Pittsburgh, Boston, and Calgary.
    • Philadelphia may make a significant move at the deadline.
    • The Capitals are looking for a proven defencemen.

Canucks Close to Locking Up Key Piece

After winning the Northeast division with 100 points, the Vancouver Canucks lost in the Conference Semifinals to the Chicago Blackhawks. Fans were upset. But after the lose sunk in, uncertainty and nervousness blanketed the organization. Their 2 star forwards, the Sedin’s, may walk for nothing, signing as unrestricted free agents elsewhere. Their all-world goalie, Roberto Luongo, could be traded as his contract expired after the 2009-10 season.

Fast-forward a few moments. The uneasiness is gone, and optimism of a very successful is growing by the day. The Sedin twins were locked up to long term deals, Mikael Samuelsson was signed to put the puck in the net, Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich were brought in through trade to add depth and stability to the point,  and there are know reports that Luongo is close to signing a contract extension.  Canucks fans, breathe easy.

But in this NHL when a star play signs a new contract, that news tends to play second fiddle to “what is the cap hit”. This my friends is unknown at the moment.

Sedins in Toronto?

  • On the Fan 590′s Bob McCown show this afternoon in Toronto, Ron Wilson let it slip that Maple Leafs will pursue the Sedin’s this off season. In what could easily be percieved as ‘tampering’ had it come a week ago, Wilson suggested it was a certainty that the Leafs would chase the two Sedins.

Daily Rumors – June 30th

  • Mark Everson of the NY Post is reporting that the New Jersey Devils are close to re-signing Johnny Oduya to a 4 year deal worth in the neighborhood of $3-4 million per year. This would be a good signing for the Devils, he’s a going to be a solid D-man for years. But they’ll need to look at bringing in some offensive help as they are going to let Brian Gionta leave as a UFA. Defensive specialist John Madden also appears to on his way out. Madden is 36, but still has a couple good years left in him.
  • Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Blackhawks and Havlat continue to talk contract. Havlat is looking for a multi-year deal at a lower amount than what he made last year ($6 million) but the Hawks are looking at a one year deal with a slight raise. Toews and Kane will be getting a raise next year, so the Hawks have to watch their future money. David Bolland just signed a 5 year deal at around $18 million. Cam Barker and Chris Versteeg are also RFA’s for the Hawks. The Bulin wall’s big contract comes off the books, but they are showing interest in re-signing him. You have to think the Hawks are rethinking their decision to give Brian Campbell that big deal last year.
  • According to the Montreal Gazette, the Montreal Canadiens may look at the Sedin twins if they decide not to re-sign with the Canucks. I didn’t really think of the Canadiens as potential destinations for the twins at first, but if they could easily replace Koivu, Tanguay, and Kovalev, and leave a bit more money to re-sign Mike Komisarek. Saku is as good as gone, and may follow his brother to Minnesota. Montreal may also look at Daniel Brier and his big contract if they can’t deal for Vincent Lecavallier. Philly would be so happy if they could find someone to take the $7 million cap hit off their books, as their cap number must be getting close to $70 million for next year.
  • The Raleigh News Observer is saying that Hurricanes GM wants to re-sign Eric Cole and Chad LaRose to multiyear deals. They are looking to get Cole for 2 years.
  • From TSN.ca, Vancouver Canucks GM has left Sweden and Sedin’s with a contract offer to mull over. I have a feeling they will remain with the Canucks, as I don’t see any other GM offering more money than the Canucks will. But if they are dead set on signing an 8-12 year deal, they won’t return to Canucks, as Gillis has stated he wants no part of those extremely long term deals.

Edmonton has reportedly offered last years starting goalie, Dwayne Roloson, a 1 year deal worth $3 million. The 39 year old Roloson would like to sign a 2 year deal.

Jay Bouwmeester should have a multi-year offer from the Calgary Flames today.

Vancouver Canucks GM Chasing Sedins in Sweden

  • Agent Turned GM Heading to Sweden to Chase Sedins — TSN is reporting that Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis has flown to Sweden, and is meeting with the Sedin’s in advance of Wednesday’s opening of the Free Agency Period. If nothing else, this certainly shows that the Canucks are serious about them coming back. Though i am a big fan of the twin’s, they top my list of “Players most likely to be overpaid” this off-season. This should be the last off-season with players receiving $6.5-$8.5mm salaries (Sedin’s, Boumeester, Hossa, Gaborik, Havlat etc). The realities of the global econimic crisis, should be reflected with a serious market correction in free agent salaries in the summer of 2010.
  • Reminds me of Reason #46 Why Peter Chiarelli is a great GM: Marc Savard makes $5mm this upcoming season. And to think, GM Glen Sather pays two second line centers (Gomez & Drury) over $7mm each, and an AHL defencman (Wade Redden) $6.5mm. Remember when people talked about Sather as if he were an all-time great GM?

Sedins want $63 million contract each

The Los Angeles correspondent of Swedish newspaper Expressen reported ”Daniel and Henrik Sedin both want 12-year, $63 million contracts to stay with the Vancouver Canucks. They’ll be unrestricted free agents on July 1″…

If you average it out it’s 5.25 million each per season. The contact would obviously be front loaded with buy out options toward the end. It sounds like a lot of money at first glance but with Roberto Luongo between the pipes and the Sedin twins locked up long term Vancouver would have a good core to build around.

Sedins to Montreal?

A possible destination for the Sedin twins is Montreal according to Eklund of Hockeybuzz.com. “I am chasing a rumor that the Canadiens are pursuing the Sedins, and a rumor involving Komisarek to Boston. I will be blogging more before 3pm. I will put up my rumor update at that point”…

We’ll keep an eye on this as it develops. Sutter to coach The Flames also being suggested in this article.
