Injury notes: Dubinsky, Poti, Leino, Tallinder, Brodeur, Grabner, Kelly, Steen and Tarasenko

  • Jeff Rimer via twitter: Looks like Blue Jackets Brandon Dubinsky will return to the lineup tonight. He’s missed the last 11 games.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said that Martin Brodeur skated this morning but is still going to be out awhile with his sore back.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Prognosis on Bruins Chris Kelly’s knee injury won’t be known until the swelling goes down. Early reports are that there is no significant structural damage, but  ”a) things sometime change in 24 hours b) he could still be on the shelf for undetermined period of time.”
  • Andy Strickland via twitter: Blues Alex Steen is skating with David Backes and Chris Stewart. Indications are that he’ll be in the lineup tonight.

Morning Rumors: Getzlaf, Perry, Hiller, O’Reilly, Iginla, Whitney, Devils, Canucks and Byfuglien

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: To LeBrun’s understanding, the Ducks will have contract talks with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry in the next 7 to 10 days. LeBrun thinks a Getzlaf deal will get done, but is not sure about Perry. It would be hard for the Ducks to trade Perry at the deadline considering they are challenging for first overall. LeBrun is guessing there is a real chance that the Ducks trade Perry at the trade deadline, regardless of what position they are in. LeBrun also doesn’t think the Ducks would trade Jonas Hiller this season. On the trade front:

“Nobody wants to take any significant money back,” said one Eastern Conference GM on Monday.

“The question I’m asking myself is why would I take on a player with three more years on his deal at $3 million or $4 million a year and then have that contract limit what I can do this summer?” a Western Conference GM told ESPN.com.

Teams like the Senators, Maple Leafs, Flyers, and Rangers have been put off by the high asking price for Avalanche’s Ryan O’Reilly.

“I just think they don’t really want to move him unless it’s a home-run offer,” said one Eastern Conference GM. “That’s their prerogative, really.”

Keep an eye on the Penguins if the Flames and Jarome Iginla decide to move on.

  • David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Sportsnet Doug MacLean on Team 1260 Radio yesterday talking about defenseman Ryan Whitney:

”Can they move Whitney?” MacLean said. ” I am hearing Whitney, the offers are not coming. There’s very little in the way of an offer for Whitney. I’m shocked by that. I haven’t seen him like you guys have, but has he dropped that dramatically that there’s not even offers for him out there?

“And then I heard the other day whispers that he could go on waivers. That can’t be true. But I did hear whispers of it on the weekend from a couple of agents and it shocked me. But it probably isn’t true, but as they say in P.E.I: I’m not telling you  it’s the truth, I’m just telling you what I heard.

  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: The Devils may look to trade for a top-6 forward that would bring some scoring. Chere wonders if they have enough to get a top-6 without having to give up defenseman Jon Merrill.

“I don’t have a no-trade, no-movement or any of those, so I know it can happen,” said defenseman Andy Greene, whose name often seems to come up when trades are the topic. “I know Lou is going to do whatever is best for the team that he sees fit. It that’s it, that’s it. I can’t argue with him about that. It’s not something I put a lot of energy or focus into.”

Greene said that trade rumors once use to be a distraction, but no longer.

“Honestly, no. That’s the business. I know any day you can be gone. You can be traded, put on waivers, sent down. I think maybe, in reality, my first and second year I kind of thought about it and made more of it than I should have just because it was my first time going through it,” Greene said.

Adam Larsson won’t be deal, and it’s unlikely that Bryce Salvador is moved. Scouts could be watching Henrik Tallinder when he’s playing.

  • Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province: Gallagher thinks the Canucks still need to add a third line center. Though Jordan Schroeder may grow in to the spot, at the moment they need to improve there. They have an excess of wingers. Kevin Bieksa is expected back soon.

Afternoon notes: Devils, Tambellini, Luongo, Panthers, Flames, Parise, Knuble and Red Wings

  • Dan Rosen via twitter: Petr Sykora and Henrik Tallinder will be back in the Devils lineup tonight. Josefson and Harrold are out.
  • Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province: With Tomas Vokoun signing with the Penguins, and Tim Thomas taking a year off, the value from trading Roberto Luongo may have increased. The Maple Leafs had some interest in Vokoun and may now look more seriously at Luongo. The Canucks may have to take some salary back. There has been talk of Columbus being interested, but it’s not likely that he’d waive his no-trade clause to go there.
  • Roger Millions via twitter: Some with SportsNet believe that Eric Veilleux is still in the mix for a Flames coaching position. He and Hartley are still close.
  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils Zach Parise on Adam Oates getting a head coaching position: “I think he’d do great, but, hopefully, that’s not the case. Hopefully, he sticks around here.” … Sure doesn’t sound like someone planning to play for another organization next season.
  • Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: The Red Wings have been evaluating their roster, free agents and possible trade targets:

“A lot can happen before June 30 (the day before free agency begins on July 1),” Holland said. “We’ve had discussions on a lot of players who could be available.”

The Wings may be looking for a backup goalie as there have been some health concerns for Joey MacDonald (partially herniated disc). Patrick Eaves should be recovered from his concussion by training camp. GM Ken Holland will meet with Brad Stuart’s agent at the draft.

  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings could be aggressive this offseason, but beyond Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, there is a dropoff. Teams like the Sharks, Canucks, Penguins, Bruins, Blackhawks and Predators could also be looking to make changes, making it a crowded market. Rick Nash wants out but he would cost 4 or 5 assets. The Wings brain trust will meet again shortly.

“It was a good start,” Holland said. “We talked about a lot of players, including our own in Grand Rapids, and where some of those guys fit in. We talked about some players that we’ve heard might be available, through the rumor mill, and we looked at teams that might have cap issues.”

Afternoon notes: Price, Myers, Toews, Gunnarson, Tallinder, Parenteau, Steckel, Lines and starting goalies

  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said it’s “doubtful” that Henrik Tallinder will be able to play in the playoffs, but Tallinder is still hopeful. Jacob Josefson won’t need surgery on his wrist.
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: The Canadiens have asked the Maple Leafs for permission to talk to Claude Loiselle, who are expected to grant permission.
  • David Alter via twitter: Maple Leafs lines: Frattin-Bozak-Kessel, MacArthur-Lombardi-Crabb, Connolly-Steckel-Brown, Rosehill-Ashton-Armstrong-Colborne.
  • Stephen Whyno via twitter: Capitals lines: Ovechkin-Backstrom-Johansson, Chimera-Perreault-Semin, Hendricks-Beagle-Laich, Knuble-Aucoin-Ward-Eakin-Halpern.

Morning NHL rumors and injury notes involving: the Blackhawks, Stars, Tallinder, Bogosian, Ramo, Kolanos, Tanguay, Jagr, Martinek, Niittymaki

  • Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: The Blackhawks are letting everyone know what they would like to trade for. A defenseman for their 2nd pairing, and a veteran forward, preferably a 2nd line center. The Hawks haven’t talked  to the Ducks who floated their big 3 and Francois Beauchemin earlier this month. In the Western Conference, only the Ducks, Oilers and Blue Jackets could be sellers so far. It would take a significant piece for Oilers Sam Gagner. In the Eastern Conference, the Sabres, Canadiens, NY Islanders, Lightning, Hurricanes and maybe the Jets could be sellers. The Sabres have Derek Roy, Drew Stafford and Brad Boyes but their price could be high. They should at least call about Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu of the Hurricanes. Untouchable prospects could be Dylan Olsen, Kevin Hayes and Brandon Saad. Brandon Pirri, Jeremy Morin, Shawn Lalonde and Brian Connelly could interest some teams.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: (mailbag) If the Stars don’t sign Nicklas Grossman to a contract extension, they could trade him by the deadline. As for anyone else, that would depend on whether their buyers or sellers. If they are sellers, there should be some interest in Brenden Morrow, Sheldon Souray, Mark Fistric and Grossman. If they are in a playoff at the deadlines, would have to think they are buyers.
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Devils defenseman Henrik Tallinder will be out 6 to 8 weeks with a blood clot in his lower left leg. He’s been bothered by a sore leg and an MRI yesterday revealed.
  • Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian could be ready to return tomorrow night. He’s missed 5 consecutive games with a lower-body injury.
  • Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames GM Jay Feaster confirms that recently acquired goalie Karri Ramo has 1 year left on his KHL contract.
  • Roger Millions via twitter: Flames forward Curtis Glencross was put on the IR and out at least 7 days. MRI results are not in yet.
  • Adam Kimelman via twitter: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on a Jaromir Jagr deal: “We’ve had some talks. I don’t really want to comment any further on that right now. We’ve talked about it.”
  • Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Blue Jackets defenseman Radek Martinek will miss the rest of the season with a concussion. They’ve signed Brett Lebda to a 1 year deal.
  • Craig Custance via twitter: Sharks goalie Antero Niittymaki will play for Worchester of AHL on Friday and Saturday. Interested teams will get a chance to scout him.

Players with the worst plus/minus so far this season

So the all-star break is upon us (yawn), and in honor this 4 day break, I decided to put together a list of the worst plus/minuses so far this season. I’m still amazed (and annoyed, on my fantasy team) that Kovalchuk leads this category. I know he doesn’t always focus on the defensive side of the things but…..  Finding 4 San Jose Sharks is also a bit of a surprise. Maple Leafs defenseman/forward Brett Lebda is a funny case as he’s a -19 in 22 games, that’s terrible.

Here is our Top 25 NHL Unrestricted Free Agents list for 2010. It has been labelled a weak crop for this years NHL unrestricted free agents, especially if you’re looking for scoring help. There are a several defenseman that should draw plenty of interest. In putting together this list, we took into consideration age, position, and likelihood of signing with a new team (ie. NHL Free Agency Rumors to heat up

  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Pittsburgh Penguins are hoping to sign both Dan Hamhuis and Sergei Gonchar, loading up on their blueline and sacrificing bringing in a winger or two. Along with Gonchar and Hamhuis, they would have Brooks Orpik, Kris Letand and Alex Goligoski in their top 5. This would give an opportunity to some of their young forward, giving them a chance at claiming spot with the big club. I think the Pens would have to get both at a reasonable number (or reasonable combined number) to make this a reality.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: It appears the Washington Capitals won’t be able to afford Anton Volchenkov, so they may turn their eyes to Willie Mitchell. Mitchell made about $3.5 million last season with the Canucks, and has had concussion problems. If the Penguins can’t sign Dan Hamhuis before July 1st, the Canucks are rumored to be interested in him. The St. Louis Blues and Jaroslav Halak could be talking about a deal in the $4 million range. Marty Turco could end up in San Jose for $3 million.
  • Myfoxphilly.com: While the Flyers hope to sign Evgeni Nabokov before he hits free agency, the San Jose Sharks are reportedly interested in former Flyers goalie, Michael Leighton.
  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Columbus Blue Jackets don’t expect to do much on July 1st when the free agency period opens. GM Scott Howson has a few things in mind, but won’t overpay and inturn, hurting the team in the long run. They will look to sign a 4th line center, and may look at a trade or 2 to rebuild their blueline. 5 players they could look at, at a $1 million or less are: Adam Burish, Dominic Moore, Ryan Johnson, Krys Barch and Ryan Hollweg. It might take a couple months for them to make a trade for a defenseman. The Jackets have $47.6 million tied up in 18 players, not including Nikita Filatov who is expected to be back.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: With the salary cap increasing by $2.6 million to $59.4, teams have a little more room to sign their own free agents, or keep a player or 2 they may have had to trade due to cap restraints. The Sabres would like to bring back Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman, but both may believe there is more money for them in the open market. “They’d like to come back, we’d love to have them back, but you’ve got so much money to spend — it doesn’t matter what team you are, you make decisions.” The Sabres will also be looking at the trade route, and will be buyers instead of sellers.

Horton on the move before the draft? Stars need a pucking moving defenseman … To get Chiarelli’s attention, Oilers could ….

DJ Been of WEEI: There were reports that this weekend that the Bruins were close to trading for Nathan Horton, but it hasn’t happened yet. Several teams may also be close on a deal for him. The Maple Leafs are another possible destination for him.

Bob McKenzie via Twitter: Nathan Horton hasn’t been moved yet, but will be moved, the Bruins are right in it.

Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If the Oilers wanted to see if they land the top 2 picks, offering Ales Hemsky and Jordan Eberle or Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson might get Chiarelli’s attention. Chicago could be asking for a 2nd round pick to get Kris Versteeg, plus taking Brent Sopel’s $2.2 million contract off their hands. The Sabres could use a defenseman like Sheldon Souray. The Sabres are looking to move Derek Roy, Tim Connolly, and Drew Stafford. The Sabres aren’t that interested in re-signing Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman.

Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars have a surplus of left handed forwards (no right handed centers, and potentially only 1 right handed forward. The Stars could really use a puck moving defenseman, and could send out one of their top-6 wingers, James Neal, Jamie Benn, Brenden Morrow or Steve Ott.

Craig Custance of the SportingNews: The San Jose Sharks could be looking for a top-tier defenseman with possible targets, Anton Volchenkov, Paul Martin, Sergei Gonchar, and Zbynek Michalek.

Options if Lidstrom Retires … Yzerman still considering Tampa? A new look Shark team next year?

  • George Malik of MLive: If Nicklas Lidstrom retires, Brian Rafalski could step up into a larger role. One option available for the Red Wings would be to call up the Maple Leafs and see what it would take for Tomas Kaberle. They could also look at 2nd tier defenseman like Henrik Tallinder, Toni Lydman, Derek Morris, Joe Corvo, and Kim Johnsson.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: There are mixed reports on if Steve Yzerman is still considered a candidate or interested in the Tampa Bay Lightning GM position. It was report earlier that he wasn’t interested, but that may not be the case. When asked about it, “My response has always been not to comment,” Yzerman said. That might lead one to speculate that it’s still an option for him.
  • Mike Brophy of Sportsnet: The Sharks are down 3-0, and it will take a miracle for them to come back and win the series versus the Blackhawks. Big changes could be coming from them in the off-season. Odds are looking good that Patrick Marleau won’t be back with the Sharks next season. Evgeni Nabokov is 34 and a UFA, and despite solid regular season numbers, he has a history of not performing in the playoffs. No one questions Joe Thornton’s talent, but the playoffs have a tendency of not bringing out the best of him, he’s a -10 heading into last night. GM Doug Wilson will also be on the hotseat as he’s the one who’s put together this team that has had some playoff woes the past couple seasons.

Krejci Out … Flames not firing anyone? Spezza on the block? Jokinen not going Minsk

  • Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald: After being smoked by Mike Richards on a big open ice hit, David Krejci didn’t return to the game. He was taken to local hospital for further evaluation.
  • George Johnson of the Calgary Herald: It’s looking more and more likely that the Calgary Flames are holding pat with regards to GM Darryl Sutter, their coaches, and management. This is based on the fact that there has been no news out of Calgary regarding it, and that the Draft and Free Agency are getting closer. There had been rumors that Sutter could be fired.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Brennan thinks the Senators should quietly see what they could get for Jason Spezza before his July 1st no-movement clause kicks in. It would be hard to replace another top, point-a-game player, but it could bring back a nice package. Fans blamed Spezza for their 1st round loss, something that obviously didn’t sit well with Spezza.
  • Darren Dreger via Twitter: There is a rumor out there that Olli Jokinen is signing a deal with Minsk, Jokinen’s agent refutes it and says he’s hoping to play in the NHL next season.
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader asks if Bill Guerin will be back next season. Molinari thinks Guerin will want to play next year, the lack of depth on the wings, and that he’s fit well with the team, most likely will mean he’ll be back. But a lot will depend on how much he wants and if the Pens really want to have the 39-year old back.
  • Aaron Portzline and Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Scott Arniel met with the Blue Jackets last Saturday, and on Tuesday Kevin Dineen was the second candidate to interviewed by Columbus for their head coaching position. Other candidates that are expected to get interviews are Claude Noel (CBJ interim coach), Paul MacLean (Det. assist.) and Guy Boucher (AHL Hamilton).
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres are faced with the decision if they want to resign Toni Lydman and Henrik Tallinder or not. Both will be unrestricted free agents, but will have to be at the right price if they’ll both want to be back. The 32-year old Lydman had a cap number of $2.875 million, the  31-year old Tallinder had an average of $2.56, and both could be looking for something similar, maybe more.
  • The Ottawa Citizen: Daniel Alfredsson had successful hernia surgery on Tuesday, with recovery time expected to 4 to 6 weeks. Other Ottawa Senators having off-season surgery are Alex Kovalev and Milan Michalek (both ACL) and Chris Phillips (bunions).
