Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 29th, 2011
Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: With Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen returning from injuries, 2 players will have to be scratched. Mike Modano will likely be a healthy scratch. Kris Draper could be another possibility. Jiri Hudler has played well of late and may keep his spot in the lineup.
Mark Whicker of the OC Register: They list possible players the Ducks may go after this off-season; Joel Ward (Nash), Max Talbot (Pit), Vern Fiddler (Pho), Eric Belanger (Pho), Ville Leino (Phi), Kevin Bieksa (Van), Eric Cole (Car), Alex Tanguay (Cal), Sean Bergenheim (TB), Craig Adams (Pit), Michal Handzus (LA), Mike Rupp (Pit), Patrick Maroon (Phil).
John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres goalie Ryan Miller admitted that his late season injury was a concussion. Vogl’s article also has audio from Miller talking about the season, the future, and their goaltending situation.
John Vogl of the Buffalo News: With the new ownership in Buffalo, they may able to go the free agent route to improve this off-season, normally it would have had to been through trade. The Sabres need help at center and on the blueline. They need help down the middle.
Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Gleason wonders if the Sabres will bring Brad Boyes back, he had a good regular season after he came over from St. Louis but struggled in the playoffs. They need help down the middle. Gleason wonders if they could trade away some young prospects for say a Patrick Sharp? Evgeni Malkin? or maybe Danny Briere?
Frank Seravalli via twitter: Flyers goalie Michael Leighton is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Andreas Nodl and Jeff Carter are also listed as day-to-day.
Stars close to getting a new owner … Big off-season questions for Ducks … Dubinsky wants a deal ASAP … Erat ready to return
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 27th, 2011
- David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail: Tom Gaglardi is getting closer owning the Dallas Stars as he’s agreed to a price and most of the terms. Gaglardi “will soon enter an exclusive negotiating period of roughly 30 days to complete the purchase of the NHL team and a 50-per-cent share of American Airlines Center. The last hurdle, according to a source familiar with the sale who requested anonymity because the deal is not official, is taking the Stars through bankruptcy court so Gaglardi will not be hampered by any debts left by current owner Tom Hicks.” Though no one is saying what the price for the team and half-interest in the arena is, but it could be in the $250 million range.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Though it’s not official, it could be Vancouver-Nashville starting on Thrusday. San Jose-Detroit would then likely be Friday and Sunday.
- The Globe and Mail: Two of the Ducks biggest off-season questions will be if Teemu Selanne will return next year and if Jonas Hiller can get over vertigo? “I’ve got to be honest, it was so much fun this year, and that’s all I ask,” Selanne said. “It’s not about goals or points. I just want to enjoy this every day. I try to play like I left everything out there, but you can’t just win the Stanley Cup every year.” Lubomir Visnovsky was playing through a serious shoulder injury during the playoffs. GM Bob Murray added, “The decisions this summer are different than just getting players,” Murray said. “The purpose here is, can we win with this core group? That’s what I’ve got to figure out.” Selanne said that he talked to Paul Kariya, who’s fully healthy, but isn’t sure if he wants to return to an NHL that has had so many head issues this year.
- Peter Botte of the NY Daily News: Rangers center Brandon Dubinsky is an RFA and coming off a 2 year, $3.75 million deal. “I’d like to get it done as quickly as possible,” Dubinsky said Monday at the team’s practice facility in Greenburgh. “I think the Rangers want me, and I want the Rangers, so at the end of the day we might as well not waste each other’s time and draw it out as long as it was (two years ago). The sooner it’s done, the sooner I can focus on putting all my energy and efforts to this organization.”
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Ilya Bryzgalov won’t be suiting up for Russia at the World Championship as Evgeni Nabokov was given the #1 job, Bryzgalov didn’t want another role.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals Mike Knuble and Dennis Wideman were in full pads at yesterday mornings practice. Knuble stayed on the ice with teammates for the practice, Wideman left after 15 minutes due to feeling lightheaded. Knuble wasn’t assigned a line at practice and is still not sure when he’ll return. “There’s a fine line between coming back and helping and coming back and hurting a team,” Knuble continued. “That’s my main concern, is that you wanna come back and you don’t wanna have to worry about contributing all the time, but just not hindering what’s going on.”
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Red Wings coach Mike Babcock isn’t worried about Johan Franzen’s ankle injury, even if he missed another practice earlier this week. Henrik Zetterberg has taken part in 2 practices recently.
- Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: Predators forward Martin Erat practiced with the team yesterday for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury in Game 4 versus the Ducks. Erat would have been able to go in Game 7 if the Ducks had extended the series.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Former NHLer Donald Brashear is going to give MMA a try, he has a deal to try cage-fighting in June at ‘Ringside 11′ at the Quebec Coliseum.

Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Videos on April 16th, 2011
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger skated yesterday but didn’t shoot any pucks due to his injured right hand. Sabres defenseman Jordan Leopold skated yesterday and hopes to get back in the lineup sometime this series.

Should Stoll get suspended? Bolland may not return in Round 1 … Zetterberg skates … Perron still experiencing post-concussion symptoms
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Videos on April 15th, 2011
- Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Blackhawks forward David Bolland hasn’t been cleared for contact yet, and he may not be close. “It’s awareness,” Bolland said. “Your awareness is the big one. Just playing 2-on-2 out there with the guys, you’re still looking around and you’re not sure where the guy is or where he’s coming from. That’s probably the big one, my awareness. That’s one I have to be cautious about.” It doesn’t look like he’ll be going in Game 2, and could be in doubt for the rest of the series.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg skated for about 15 minutes. He has a 2nd degree MCL sprain which usually takes 3 weeks to heal, it’s been just over a week since the injury.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: On the list of priorities for Thrashers GM Rick Dudley is a top-6 forward and a possibly a top-5 defenseman. Obtaining a forward could come by trade or free agency. He doesn’t rule out signing a RFA to an offer sheet. Eric Boulton and Radek Dvorak are UFA’s and Dudley has already spoken to them. Dudley doesn’t see any issues in re-signing RFA Zach Bogosian.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Blues forward David Perron is still experiencing post-concussion symptoms 5 months after initially being concussed. “You can’t be too eager to come back,” Perron said. “There’s parts of the day when I feel really well, and you’re like, ‘If I could feel like that all day, I’d be fine.’ But then there are situations that remind me, ‘All right, you’re not fine.’” GM Doug Armstrong may have to start planning on heading into next season without him.
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: Rangers coach John Tortorella is considering moving Erik Christensen to the top line with Marian Gaborik and Vinny Prospal and moving Artem Anisimov to the 4th line. Tortorella on the move, “He is a skilled guy, and has given us some good minutes at certain points during the year. After Game 1, there need to be certain improvements with our game, and certainly creating more offense is one of them.”
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The LA Kings have assigned Brayden Schenn to Manchester of the AHL rather than calling him up to the big club.
“The other thing, too, is that he can help us in terms of making plays. But the perception that he’s somehow going to fill in for Kopitar is way off,” Lombardi said. “He could improve the team in an area like [Andrei] Loktionov, in terms of playmaking and puck possession. But the perception that he’s going to go in there and suddenly Kopitar’s hole is going to be filled, that’s totally unrealistic.
“The other thing in the back of my mind is, is this really the stage to put the kid on?”
- Kings center Jarret Stoll hits Sharks defenseman Ian White from behind, will he get suspended?
Lemaire steps down as Devil coach again … Zetterberg to miss start of series, Kronwall to return … Bolland could be back in round 1 … Changes coming in Dallas, Carolina?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 11th, 2011
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Jacques Lemaire has once again stepped down as the New Jersey Devils head coach. Lemaire took over from John MacLean who was fired on Dec. 23rd after posting a 9-22-2 record. The Devils were 29-17-3 under Lemaire, and posted a 23-3-2 run.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg is battling a knee injury. “I don’t expect him to start the series,” Babcock said. “But he’s really pushing things, and he’s working hard at it, and he’ll be ready to go as soon as he can.” Niklas Kronwall should be ready for Game 1 after missing the last 5 games with an upper-body injury.
- Craig Custance via twitter: Blackhawks coach Joel Quennville on center David Bolland, “Hopefully he can be a part early in this first series.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe should be ready for Game 1.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Sergei Bobrovsky will be the starting goalie for the Flyers in their 1st round match-up against Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres. Bobrovsky was 28-13-8 with a 2.59 GAA and .915 SV%. Miller was 34-22-8 with a 2.59 goals-against average and .916 SV%.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk now faces the tough decision on whether they want to re-sign Brad Richards, and if they can afford to sign him. Other Stars UFA’s are Jamie Langenbrunner, Karlis Skrastins, Brandon Segal, Jason Williams, Brian Sutherby and Jeff Woywitka. They also have to decide if they want to make a coaching change or not.
- Eric Francis in the Toronto Sun: Don’t expect to hear any updates on Alex Tanguay and the Calgary Flames talks from Tanguay’s agent, Steve Kotlowitz. A decision should be made by May if ESPN and the NHL can come to terms on a TV deal.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Free agent Zenon Konopka is optimistic a deal will get down with the Islanders. It will be 8 weeks of rest with no surgery for several of his injuries.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes could have a different look next year as Eric Cole, Joni Pitkanen, Jussi Jokinen, Chad LaRose, Cory Stillman, Pat Dwyer and Jay Harrison are UFA’s. GM Jim Rutherford said that re-signing Cole is a priority. They may be looking to make changes on their blueline, so Joni Pitkanen could be gone.

- Rich Chere via twitter: Mark Fraser will be a RFA but wonders if he fits into the Devils plans, “For the 1st time in my career it’s in my mind.” Fraser fell out of favor added, “Hopefully the way the season went won’t hurt my future.”
- Hockeycentral panel talk about the uncertain future of the Calgary Flames.
Parise shut down … Zetterberg injured … Wideman out for 1st round … Oilers draft options … No disciplinary action for Turco
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 7th, 2011
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: So Zach Parise has been shut down for the rest of the season by the team, it’s not injury related, just precautionary. Parise will be a RFA at season’s end and the Devils could file for arbitration which would prevent teams from signing Parise to an offer sheet. This would mean he’d have to sign a 1 year deal. He’s open to signing a long term deal.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Milan Hejduk posted his 11th consecutive 20 goal season, and will be a UFA on July 1st. The 35 year old makes $3 million this year, and when asked about his future, “We’ll see what happens.” His family likes the area, and the Avalanche are going to have to spend some money to get to the salary cap floor next year.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg left last night’s game half way through the 1st period with a lower body injury. He as hit by Bryan Allen. “All I know is he got his leg tangled up,” coach Mike Babcock said. “He probably won’t play through the weekend. We’ll see after that.”
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals coach Bruce Broudreau thinks that defenseman Dennis Wideman will miss at least the 1st round of the playoffs. “We don’t know,” Boudreau said when asked if there was any timeline for Wideman’s return. “It’s one of those things that, again, this time next week we’ll know a lot more than we know now, but it depends on how his rehab goes and how quick he takes to it.”
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks that if the Oilers want a player who can play right away, they’ll draft Adam Larsson. If they want to wait at least a year, they’ll draft Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. They may also try to package the pick they got from LA in the Penner deal and a 2nd rounder to move up in the draft. They like center Mark McNeil but Oils may have to move into the top 12 with their 2nd 1st round pick if they decide to draft Larsson or Gabriel Landeskog. MyNHLdraft has the Oilers picking Nugent-Hopkins 1st overall, and defenseman Jonas Brodin with their 2nd 1st round pick.
- Chris Kuc via twitter: NHL deputy commish Bill Daly said there will be “No investigation and no action” in an email regarding Marty Turco’s betting with a fan.
- George Richards via twitter: The Panthers signed Quinton Howden to an entry level deal yesterday. (He was 1st round pick last year, 25th overall)
Crosby’s father refutes retirement pressure report … Green back late this month and other Capitals notes … Paul Stastny clears air about is dad’s comments
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on March 14th, 2011
- Renaud Lavoie via twitter: GM meetings today are all about head shots and concussions.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: LeBrun talked to Sidney Crosby’s father on Friday and there was no truth to Bob McCown’s reports that Crosby’s family was trying to get him to retire. Still no timetable on a possible return. “Not at all,” Troy Crosby, from his Halifax, Nova Scotia, home, told ESPN. “We’re just trying to get him healthy again. However long that takes, that’s how long it’s going to take.”
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: As the Red Wings get closer to another playoff run, coach Mike Babcock is fine-tuning his line combinations. At home when Babcock has better control of the line combinations, he have Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg together. On the road, he’ll have them on 2 lines. Friday at home they were together with Johan Franzen. Saturday in St. Louis Datsyuk was with Franzen and Holmstrom, Zetterberg centered Bertuzzi and Cleary.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Flyer forward Ian Laperriere’s playing days are likely over. He hasn’t played since last season after blocking a shot with his face. “I still have some nerve damage in my right eye and the light bothers it.” New Sabres owner Terry Pegula is worth $3 billion according to Forbes. Sergei Bobrovsky is playing more than Brian Boucher now, but that might change in the playoffs. Mike Green may return to the Capitals lineup late this month as he’s still suffering concussion symptoms. Tom Poti could return next week, he’s been battling groin issues for hte last 2 months. Since Mike Knuble will be coming off the books for the Capitals, and if he’d take a pay cut to around $2.5 million, Jason Arnott could be back with the Capitals next year. As the playoffs get closer, Tyler Seguin has become a healthy scratch more often. The Capitals are 17-0-0 when Alexander Semin scores. It’s likely that Capitals’ 1st round pick Evgeny Kuznetsov will be playing in North America next season.
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Herald: The Flames have already begun to look at upcoming free agents, identifying players and their team needs. They have UFA’s Alex Tanguay, Curtis Glencross and Brendan Morrison, Anton Babchuk and Feaster noted “We’re not any further along,” about those negotiations.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Antti Niemi is expected to get the start tonight against the Blackhawks. Antero Niittymaki could get the start on start on Tuesday, ending Niemi’s 25 consecutive game run.
- Terry Frei of the Denver Post: Avalanche Paul Stastny talked to Eric Johnson about the negative comments his dad made about the trade that brought Johnson to Colorado. Paul said, “I talked to (Johnson). I told him it had nothing to do with him or Jay. I think it was more about losing Stewie, a rare power forward. When I talked with my dad, he said he meant no disrespect at all and he loves both players.”
- Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks winger Tanner Glass suffered an upper body injury in practice last week and tried to play through it. “I tried to play; I was treating it like a playoff game so if there was any chance I could go I would have but there was no way,” said Glass, 6-1 and 210-pounds. “It’s gotten progressively worse since the San Jose game and it’s one of those things … It’s muscular and if I keep pushing it, it’s going to get worse so I have to give it a few days.”
Notes on Kovalchuk and the NHL’s investigation of contracts
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on August 11th, 2010
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Kovalchuk’s mom thinks the contract with the Devils will be reworked before the start of the season, and that he isn’t panicking.
- ESPN: The Devils are working on another deal for Kovalchuk. “We want Ilya to be a Devil,” Lamoriello said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday. “We will do everything possible to achieve that.”
- James Mirtle via twitter: Nothing from the Kings yet if the 15-year offer is still on the table for Kovalchuk. Mirtle thinks there is a small chance their in it.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: NHL ‘likely’ won’t penalize the Devils or Kovalchuk.
- Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy: Wyshynski puts together more notes on the Kovalchuk fallout. Bruins, Canucks cooperating, Flyers not happy.
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: Hammond thinks that Kovalchuk could sign a 1 year deal with the KHL or in the NHL, and re-visit free agency next summer.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: The NHL is looking into Marc Savard’s contract from a statement from the Bruins and Peter Chiarelli. Chiarelli met with the NHL back on Aug. 4th.
- Larry Brooks via twitter: Brooks wonders how the NHL can investigate these contracts without a ‘systems arbitrator? “CBA says it can’t. Of course it doesn’t matter what’s in CBA.”
- Nick Kyreos via twitter: The contracts of Hossa, Pronger, Savard and Luongo have been continuously investigated by the NHL since they were registered.
- Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: Could the Canucks be okay with Roberto Luongo’s contract being voided by the NHL? They wouldn’t be on the hook paying him until 2021-22, and there would competition where Cory Schneider could take over the number one at some point. A problem the Canucks could also face, is getting him under contract, and under the cap, given that his current cap hit would be $5.33 million, he’d want to sign for more than that.
- Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: Player agent, Kurt Overhardt, doesn’t think the NHL will void Luongo’s, or any of the other three contracts they are looking into. Overhardt felt that Bloch’s decision was ‘subjective’, that nothing in the document said they were in violation of the CBA. The other deals have already been registered by the league. “Any and all speculation that the league is going to claw back these other contracts … would be in complete violation of the collective bargaining agreement and it would be a complete infringement of the players’ rights under the CBA,” Overhardt continued. “Any attempt to do so would be absolutely predatory behaviour by the league, would be in bad faith and not in the spirit of the CBA.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: An agent has said the NHL won’t rip up the contracts of Pronger, Hossa, Luongo and Savard…
“The NHL isn’t going to do anything with these deals. Nothing is going to happen,” said the agent. “They’ve been trying to investigate most of these deals for a year.”
