Osgood to retire … Burke to meet with Schenn’s agent after vacation … Some remaining FAs … Yashin to the NHL?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on July 19th, 2011
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Chris Osgood will have a press conference today to announce his retirement from the NHL, and he’ll take a job within the organization. It was earlier thought that he would play next year, but that is not the case. Ty Conklin, Ray Emery and Marty Turco could be options as backups to Jimmy Howard.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is on holidays until next week, and no talks with Luke Schenn’s agent, Don Meehan, will begin until he returns. The Islanders, Predators, Avalanche and Coyotes are currently below the salary cap floor. The Predators still need to re-sign Shea Weber. Some remaining free agents are: Teemu Selanne, Vinny Prospal, Bryan McCabe, Nikolay Zherdev, Cory Stillman, Scott Hannan, Ray Emery, Sergei Samsonov, Alex Kovalev, Kyle Wellwood, JP Dumont, John Madden, Brent Sopel, Jack Hillen, Karlis Skrastins, Nick Boynton, Paul Mara, Ty Conklin, Marty Turco, and Pascal Leclaire.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano has an arbitration hearing set for Thursday, but they could be getting close to signing a multi-year deal. Cogliano made a $1 million least year and recorded 35 points. Cogliano could fill the hole as their 3rd line center, but could also move up to the 2nd line center roll or possibly move to the wing.
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Michel Therrien may be the backup plan for the NJ Devils coaching position if Lou Lamoriello can’t convince Jacques Lemaire to return next season.
- Dan Duggan of the Boston Herald: Re-signing Brad Marchand is a top priority for Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli. There has been some progress made, and Marchand isn’t concerned.
“It’s a very busy time for everyone with the Cup and everything,” Marchand said. “We’re confident something is going to get done real soon. I don’t think either of us are worried. We know something is going to get done.
“They know I want to be here. I know they want me here.”
- Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: SKA St. Petersburg decided not to extend Alexei Yashin’s contract, making him a free agent. Yashin’s agent Mark Gandler told Sergei Begishev of the Sovestsky Sport,
Is there an interest in Alexei from the NHL?
“We have already received one offer.”
From the Islanders?
“I will not discuss what the club is. We are considering the expediency of the offer.”
Gandler added:
“We will meet with Alexei this week for the first time. We will discuss everything. We are not in a hurry. At this moment we have not had any serious negotiations with any club. It would have been unreasonable to do that until we are sure that everything is good health wise. As far as the leagues are concerned, we will look at both sides [the NHL and the KHL].”
Chesnokov thinks it could be a negoiating ploy to get a better KHL deal, but if it’s true, “it could be the talk of the season.”
Lemaire steps down as Devil coach again … Zetterberg to miss start of series, Kronwall to return … Bolland could be back in round 1 … Changes coming in Dallas, Carolina?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on April 11th, 2011
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Jacques Lemaire has once again stepped down as the New Jersey Devils head coach. Lemaire took over from John MacLean who was fired on Dec. 23rd after posting a 9-22-2 record. The Devils were 29-17-3 under Lemaire, and posted a 23-3-2 run.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg is battling a knee injury. “I don’t expect him to start the series,” Babcock said. “But he’s really pushing things, and he’s working hard at it, and he’ll be ready to go as soon as he can.” Niklas Kronwall should be ready for Game 1 after missing the last 5 games with an upper-body injury.
- Craig Custance via twitter: Blackhawks coach Joel Quennville on center David Bolland, “Hopefully he can be a part early in this first series.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe should be ready for Game 1.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Sergei Bobrovsky will be the starting goalie for the Flyers in their 1st round match-up against Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres. Bobrovsky was 28-13-8 with a 2.59 GAA and .915 SV%. Miller was 34-22-8 with a 2.59 goals-against average and .916 SV%.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk now faces the tough decision on whether they want to re-sign Brad Richards, and if they can afford to sign him. Other Stars UFA’s are Jamie Langenbrunner, Karlis Skrastins, Brandon Segal, Jason Williams, Brian Sutherby and Jeff Woywitka. They also have to decide if they want to make a coaching change or not.
- Eric Francis in the Toronto Sun: Don’t expect to hear any updates on Alex Tanguay and the Calgary Flames talks from Tanguay’s agent, Steve Kotlowitz. A decision should be made by May if ESPN and the NHL can come to terms on a TV deal.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Free agent Zenon Konopka is optimistic a deal will get down with the Islanders. It will be 8 weeks of rest with no surgery for several of his injuries.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes could have a different look next year as Eric Cole, Joni Pitkanen, Jussi Jokinen, Chad LaRose, Cory Stillman, Pat Dwyer and Jay Harrison are UFA’s. GM Jim Rutherford said that re-signing Cole is a priority. They may be looking to make changes on their blueline, so Joni Pitkanen could be gone.
Iginla rumors persist … Trouble with Coyotes sale? Gustavsson would OK trip to Marlies … What if’s regarding Forsberg
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 27th, 2011
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster has come out and said that he not interested in trade captain Jarome Iginla, but the rumors keep appearing, with the Flyers as a potential team interested now. “Certainly, nothing stops a team from saying, ‘Hey, if you ever …,’ Feaster said. “All I say to those is, ‘Thanks. I’ll note your interest.’ ”
- Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: (article written under protest by Friesen) Bob McCown on the Fan 590 reported that the $100 million bond that the Phoenix Coyotes were going to give Matthew Hulsizer to help pay for the team has failed. NHL deputy commish Bill Daly said the report was inaccurate and added “It continues to move toward closing,” Daly said. “I don’t anticipate time will become an issue, but if it does, we’ll address it then.” The Phoenix Business Journal also added that the True North Sports (could be the leading candidates to get the team if relocation becomes the option) are working behind the scenes trying to get the Goldwater Institute to files a lawsuit against the agreement. A TNS spokesperson answer this accusation with “That is 100%, unequivocally, patently false,” … “True North Sports and Entertainment has NEVER had any contact whatsoever with the Goldwater Institute in any way, shape or form.” Friesen’s advise “don’t take it too seriously, Jets fans.”
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs goalie Jonas Gustavsson would agree to a conditioning stint with the AHL Marlies. It has been rumored that the Leafs could ask him (they haven’t yet) in hope that he could regain some of his confidence, while they go with James Reimer and JS Giguere. Gustavsson has only played twice since the last week of December.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater brings up the possibility that if Peter Forsberg signs with the Avalanche, but they drop out of the playoff race, they could trade him to a contender. Dater thinks you could get a 1st round pick or more for him (don’t agree with that but…), and the Penguins and Bruins could be 2 teams that might interested, especially the Bruins after Savard went down. Savard could be put in LTIR, freeing up some cap space for the Bruins. Dater also wonders what if another team jumps the gun on the Avs and offers Forsberg a contract. Dater uses the LA Kings as an example, and a 2 year deal worth $13 million. It could be hard for Forsberg to say no to, though he seems loyal to the Avalanche.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein thinks that if the Kings are a couple spots out of 8th spot at the trade deadline, the Kings could still be a buyer and might go after Mike Fisher. Fisher hasn’t been asked by the Senators to submit his no trade list.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Jason Spezza is eying a February 5th return to the Ottawa Senators lineup against the Islanders. The Senators have gone 1-8-4 while Spezza recovers from his shoulder injury.
- Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun: Senators prospect Jason Bailey is suing the Anaheim Ducks and it’s ECHL team (Bailey was with the organization before being traded to Ottawa) for alleged anti-Semitic remarks made by their coaches and for wrongful dismissal. It’s alleged that the coach said “only care about money and who’s who,” and that he “never wanted his son to be raised Jewish or to wear a yarmulke” and that Bailey couldn’t be trusted because “he’s Jewish.”
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: NJ Devils coach Jacques Lemaire has once again said he won’t coach the team after the season is done.
Jacques Lemaire in, John MacLean out in New Jersey
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on December 23rd, 2010
11:00 AM: Tom Gulitti via twitter: John MacLean has been fired by the NJ Devils and Jacques Lemaire will take over. Lemaire will only coach the Devils for the remainder of the season. MacLean will remain with the organization in a role to be determined later.
9:15 AM: Charles Payette of CKAC Sports: Payette is saying that Michel Langevin of CKAC was told by sources close to the New Jersey Devils might have Jacques Lemaire behind the bench tonight, replacing John MacLean.
They are saying that Lemaire caught a flight to New Jersey this morning to resume coaching the team. Lemaire retired from coaching last year after the Devils were eliminated from the 1st round.
The Devils are 9-22-2 this season and are tied for last overall with 20 points. They have only 1 win in 9 games in December.
New Jersey Devils Coach Jacques Lemaire Retires
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on April 26th, 2010
In a bit of a surprise, New Jersey Devils head coach, Jacques Lemaire retires from coaching. Lemaire will stay with the club in a yet to be determined role.
The news comes 4 days after the Devils were eliminated by the Flyers, and a couple days after GM Lou Lamoriello said he still wanted Lemaire behind the bench for next season.
Lemaire said he just doesn’t have the energy to coach anymore.
Maybe this is a good time to bring in a more offensive minded coach. An offensive coach could also help entice Ilya Kovalchuk to re-sign. I’m sure they’ll want to get someone in as fast as possible as the NHL Draft and free agency are about a month away.
Devils Bring Back Jacques Lemaire
Jacques Lemaire has been hired by the New Jersey Devils to return behind the bench as head coach.
Jacques Lemaire, who coached the Devils for five seasons in the mid 1990′s and led them to the Cup in 1995, is New Jersey’s coach again. He was hired on Monday, some five weeks after Brent Sutter resigned and eventually took over as coach of the Calgary Flames.
Lamoriello also announced that Mario Tremblay, who spent the past nine seasons as an assistant coach in Minnesota with Lemaire, will join the Devils’ coaching staff. The team also retained assistant coach Tommy Albelin and goaltending coach Jacques Caron. Former Devils great Scott Stevens will also take a more active coaching role both with the team and their AHL affiliate, Lamoriello said.(source-TSN)
