- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said via email on Tim Thomas trade rumors: “Not trading him. I have not talked to anyone and I don’t plan to.”
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford has a policy not to re-sign players during the season, but Tim Gleason was an exception yesterday. It was the first time he’s done that. Rutherford said he’s getting lost of calls for Tuomo Ruutu. Darren Dreger via twitter: Hurricanes trade focus now switches to Ruutu, Bryan Allen and Joni Pitkanen. Pitkanen’s injury may not interfere with a trade.
- Vicki Hall via twitter: Flames GM Jay Feaster on the radio yesterday: “our mandate is to win now.”
- Jonas Siegel of TSN: Leafs defenseman John-Michael Liles believes he doesn’t have a concussion, but his issues stem from a neck problem.
“Everybody wants to call it a concussion,” he exclaimed to TSN.ca. “Everybody says ‘Oh, if you have whiplash you have a concussion’ … I wasn’t sitting there going ‘Oh man I feel so foggy’ or anything like that, it just felt like I was just completely locked up and it was cutting off my focus and things like that.
“It all seemed like it was always neck-related and it almost felt like it was cutting off the flow to my brain sometimes just because it was so stiff.”
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets Evander Kane and Tim Stapleton are heading back to Winnipeg for further evaluation. Kane is out with a concussion and is not expected to play on their 4 game road trip. Dustin Byfuglien and Alex Burmistrov staked yesterday and are close to returning. They won’t play tonight, but could be in the lineup on Thursday.
- Dave Molinari via twitter: Sidney Crosby will skate today and will be off tomorrow.
- Tim Panaccio via twitter: The earliest Flyers forward Daniel Briere returns is this weekend. James van Riemsdyk is not expected to play tonight.

- Ottawa Senators via twitter: Senators coach Paul MacLean said that forward Peter Regin will be out 4-6 months after left shoulder surgery.
- Rich Chere via twitter: Devils forward Travis Zajac hasn’t resumed skating yet. He’ll need to get clearance from his doctor in Winnipeg before he can start.

Wings-Leafs in 2013 Winter Classic … Red Wings looking for scorer, depth … Potential Leafs targets … Hall gets nasty cut

- Ansar Khan of MLive: A source confirms that a deal has been finalized with the NHL, Red Wings, and Maple Leafs to hold the 2013 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium. A rink will also be built at Comerica Park and will host events leading up to the Winter Classic on January 1st. Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Earlier this week University of Michigan Athletic Director said there could be scheduling conflicts and other issues, such as liquor licenses.
- Ansar Khan of MLive: The Red Wings are having 3 days of pro and amateur scouting meeting this week. They’ll be evaluating potential trade targets and this summers free agent crop. The Red Wings are looking for a scoring winger and or a 3rd/4th line forward. The Wings have $5.7 million in cap space and will likely be offering up draft picks, middling prospects and/or fringe players. They will likely just be adding depth and not a star player.
“We like the way the team has performed. A lot of people have had good first halves,” Holland said. “But the trade deadline is coming. We have a lot of cap space. We’ve done a lot of drafting and developing since 2005, saving our picks. I don’t know if we have to do anything, but certainly in the next six weeks we’re going to explore.”
The Wings are believed to have interest in Tuomo Ruutu and Ales Hemsky. If Teemu Selanne decides to waive his no-trade clause, the Wings could be interested. Ryan Suter and Zach Parise could become available, but the Red Wings may opt to chase them in the summer.
- Michael Traikos of the National Post: Potential trade targets for the Maple Leafs: James van Riemsdyk, Bobby Ryan or Ryan Getzlaf, Ryan Malone, Derick Brassard, Paul Stastny, and Jeff Carter.
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers forward Taylor Hall was held out of last night’s game after a pre-game mishap where his head took a nasty gash from the skate of defenseman Corey Potter.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom has been off skates for the past 11 days due to his concussion. GM George McPhee said, “Nick’s doing really well. I’m I guess happy to report he’s progressing.”
- Todd Cordell via twitter: Petr Sykora is unsure if he’ll return next year, he’s taking it one year at a time according to his agent Allan Walsh.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo missed last night’s game with an upper-body injury. He left Monday’s practice after taking a blow to the head.

“If we continue on our road and we’re healthy, we’ll certainly look at doing something prior to the trade deadline and, at the very least, we’ll be looking at doing something.
“But a lot also has to do with not screwing around with a good thing,” he said, noting the players are pleased with their current situation.
“But if they are behind it, this is the one time you let the players speak and they’ll tell you in a heartbeat, yeah, we need this and we need that and that’s it.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: (mailbag) Oilers forward Ben Eager could get some interest at the trade deadline. He has 2 years left on his deal at $1.1 million.
- Brian Hedger via twitter: Frustrated Sabres goalie Ryan Miller: “We’ve got to find it from in here. We can’t sit and wait for somebody else to (bleeping) do it.” and “Do you guys really think there’s any kind of trade made … that’s going to affect this team any more than we can affect it … ?”
- Sportsnet.ca: According to a report from Bruce Garrioch, if the Blue Jackets decide to replace GM Scott Howson, former Maple Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr. is a possible replacement.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Flyers continue to monitor Predators defenseman Ryan Suter. James van Riemsdyk could have been a piece, but he is currently out with a concussion. He has a muscle tear in his abdomen and has a hip that will require surgery this offseason. Would the Flyers consider moving Brayden Schenn as Sean Couturier may have passed him on the depth chart? They have their 1st round pick in play and possibly blueline prospect Marc-Andre Bourdon. A condition on a Suter deal would be for him to sign a long-term deal before July 1st. The Flyers like a Luke Schenn for James van Riemsdyk deal if they can’t land Suter. His concussion could put things on hold for now. The Lightning won’t be buyers at the deadline, but they’ll be taking offers on UFAs like Dominic Moore. GM Yzerman won’t look for a goalie now, and may wait for the offseaon and look at Josh Harding, Jonathan Bernier or Cory Schneider. Matheson says the Red Wings could be interested in Zach Parise this summer. They have the cap space to offer him a 5 year deal at a $8.25 million cap hit. The Penguins could use a guy like Tuomu Ruutu. The Oilers would love to get Predators dman Ryan Ellis. The Preds would be willing to move Jonathan Blue as he’s fallen out of favor.
- Lindsay Applebaum of the Washington Post: Capitals defenseman will be out 4 to 6 weeks as he will undergo abdominal surgery. He’ll have the surgery today to hopefully repair damage from his now-chronic groin issue.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sidney Crosby said late last week that he is still experiencing some trouble with motion and balance, will see a concussion specialist in chiropractic neurology. Crosby didn’t suffer any setbacks after skating on Friday and Saturday.
- Dallas Morning News: The Stars have put center Mike Ribeiro on the IR with a lower body injury.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: There is no update on Kings winger Simon Gagne. He’s been out since Dec. 26th with a concussion. He is not doing any hockey activity, nor is he with the team.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Sources have been saying that Devils Lou Lamoriello has been gauging what Zach Parise could fetch on the trade market. Moving Parise if they are in the playoff race will be difficult decision to make. The Wild will definitely be an interested team. Lou will want a top young player, a prospect and a 1st rounder in return for Parise. The Wild may have to wait until the offseason and try to sign him as a UFA. If the Canadiens fire GM Pierre Gauthier in the offseason, Lightning GM Julien Brisbois and Pierre McGuire could be options. Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke appears to be targeting Ducks forward Bobby Ryan. It would likely cost the Leafs Joe Colborne or Nazem Kadri, a prospect and a 1st round pick. Jarome Iginla won’t be traded this season, but if they decide to move him in the offseason, the Capitals, Kings and Sharks could be interested. The Predators are doing all they can to re-sign defenseman Ryan Suter. If they don’t think they can re-sign him, he’d be a nice fit in Philly. The Hurricanes could start moving their UFAs at any moment. Should expect the Blue Jackets to make one big move before the end of the season, and Jeff Carter could be on his way out. The Leafs could be interested, but he’s under contract till 2021-22 with a $5.2 million cap hit. The Sabres might be offering up Derek Roy in hopes of getting bigger. The 5′ 9″ Roy carries a $4 million cap hit and has struggled this year. The Blackhawks may show some interest. Islanders winger P.A. Parenteau would be a nice fit in Pittsburgh.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Despite GM Bob Murray saying that Saku Koivu and Teeme Selanne are untouchable, Selanne refused to confirm he’ll retire as a Duck:
“We still have time to go,” said Selanne, whose team will likely be all-but-eliminated from the playoff race before the Feb. 27 trade deadline. “We’ll see.”
Brian Burke on whether Flyers James van Riemsdyk concussion will affect trade talk: “No, never was serious.” The Panthers were trying to trade for Sean Avery before they signed John Madden, they are no longer interested. Several GMs think that Shane Doan will become available if the team will be leaving Phoenix. GM Don Maloney denies that he’ll trade Doan.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: If the Kings end up trading one of their defenseman, it would likely be Jack Johnson. He’s in the rumors as he’s a 24 year old Dman on a long term deal with a decent salary cap hit.
- Josh Rimer via twitter: The Leafs assigned Jake Gardiner to the minors, but from what Rimer has been told it might be a short stay as the Leafs could be making a deal in the next day or two.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Sources are saying that Mikko Koivu’s left shoulder injury could keep him out of the lineup for a month. The Wild are already without 2nd liners Guillaume Latendresse and PM Bouchard.
- Dallas Stars via twitter: Stars forward Jamie Benn underwent an appendectomy yesterday and will be out 10-14 days.
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets forward Blake Wheeler did not travel with the team to Ottawa yesterday after taking a shot to the throat on Saturday night. He stayed overnight at a hospital, and tests revealed no damage. He could be released to join the team sometime today or Tuesday.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Blues forward Alex Steen could return tonight from his concussion. He’s missed their last 8 games.

- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning goalies Dwayne Roloson and Mathieu Garon have a combined GAA of 3.37. Some want the Lightning to trade for Evgeni Nabokov or Antero Niittymaki, or any other goalie who’ll be a UFA at the end of the year. Minor league goalie Dustin Tokarski is playing well in the AHL, but he’s not the answer right now. Trading for guys like Cory Schneider or Jonathan Bernier usually don’t happen during the season, and would cost a significant player/prospect and a high draft pick. In the offseason they could also look at free agent goalies like Brian Elliott and Josh Harding.
- Toronto Sun: The Canadiens may not be done dealing. Defenseman Hal Gill has seen his ice time decrease as of late and may interest a cup contender who is looking for a big stay at home Dman. Forwards Travis Moen and Andrei Kostitsyn will be UFAs at the end of the season. Defenseman Yannick Weber may get some interest someone who is looking to boost their PP.
- Randy Miller via twitter: Miller thinks it may cost the Flyers James van Riemsdyk, Sean Couturier and a top pick for Predators defenseman Shea Weber. The Preds would be aiming for that.
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk is out with a concussion. “James was hit in the head in each of our last two games,” Holmgren said in a statement. “He reported yesterday not feeling like himself. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion.”
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild center Mikko Koivu left last night’s game in the 1st period after taking a hit from Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka. Koivu appears to have a left shoulder injury. He left the arena with a sling on.

- Sam Carchidi via twitter: A Flyers official shot down the rumor that James van Riemsdyk was being traded to the Maple Leafs for Luke Schenn. “Not happening,” he said. If the Flyers make a deal it will be closer to the trade deadline. They have lots of interest in Ryan Suter and are not looking at him as ‘rent-a-player.’ The Flyers have about $4.2 million in cap room. Hurricanes defenseman Bryan Allen and Tim Gleason are on their list but not at the top.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke:
“I told Luke it’s not a guarantee that he wouldn’t be traded if something materializes, but we’re not in trade discussions with any team about him right now,” Burke said. “We haven’t offered him to anybody. I don’t know where the rumours started. I told him that’s not happening.”
Burke’s phone is ringing more frequently of late.
“We’re getting a lot of calls and we’re listening,” Burke said. “But that’s very different than offering a player. Fielding a phone call on a player is very different than making a phone call on a player.”

- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: 2 organizational sources confirm that the Flyers and Leafs have spoken. Dreger reported that Schenn has not offered in a trade, and that nothing is imminent.
- Kelly Friesen via twitter: Someone close to the Flyers organization told him that the van Riemsdyk for Schenn rumor has legs. Dustin Leed via twitter: Leed has been told that some discussion has taken place, but the Flyers would need Schenn + to move van Riemsdyk. Leed added that their first option is to keep him and seek a defenseman in another way.
- Arthur Staple via twitter: Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro will have surgery on Tuesday to fix a sports hernia. His season is likely over.

- Darren Dreger of TSN (mailbag): It has been reported that the Flyers and Leafs have talked. That James van Riemsdyk is a big bodied forward that the Leafs are interested. JVR would be easier to get than a Ryan Getzlaf. There have been no offers made by either side, and Luke Schenn “most definitely hasn’t been offered.” If and when the likes of Ryan Suter or Shea Weber aren’t made available, the Flyers may go back to the Leafs. “Toronto, without question would include Schenn in a trade if JVR is the return.” Dreger thinks the Sabres could move Derek Roy, or at least will be in talks with other clubs about him. A Ryan Miller trade is not likely to happen ‘in-season’ if they are considering it at all. The Senators won’t alter their long-term plans, but if they are able to add a forward, probably a top 9, Murray might make a move. Oilers Ales Hemsky’s trade value will depend on how he plays from now until the trade deadline. The Oilers will want a young player for Hemsky and possibly a draft pick depending on the player.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
* Bruins are moving cautiously towards the trade deadline as GM Chiarelli doesn’t want to mess with their chemistry.“Obviously we have a lot of cap room, so there’s a lot of flexibility,” Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli told ESPN.com Thursday. “I would like to add depth-wise on the forward front and depth-wise on the defenseman front. But I don’t want to subtract anything.”
LeBrun thinks that Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu and/or defenseman Tim Gleason could be options.
* There is a growing feeling around the league that Devils GM Lou Lamoriello won’t trade Zach Parise at the deadline if he’s not signed by then. His rights could be moved before the free agency starts if a deal can’t be reached.
“He can’t trade away his captain, the face of the franchise, with the team sitting in a playoff spot,” one source told ESPN.com Thursday.
* The Minnesota Wild have been looking to upgrade their offense for months but their aren’t going to deplete their prospects to do so. LeBrun thinks they may move a B-level prospect, a pick or a player off their roster to get a top 6. Possibly for a guy like Vinny Prospal in Columbus.
* LeBrun confirms that the Flyers and Maple Leafs have talked over the last week. The Leafs like James van Riemsdyk and the Flyers are looking for a Dman. Ryan Suter is at the top of the Flyers wish list and have shown interest in Hurricanes Tim Gleason.
* The Rangers are looking for a top 6 forward and/or a power play defenseman. They are keeping an eye on the Ryan Suter-Shea Weber-Nashville Predators situation.
* The Red Wings will be working the phones over the next 6-7 weeks. They have some interest in Ales Hemsky, and may be looking for a backup goalie upgrade.
* The Canucks are looking for size upfront, likely for the bottom 6. Cory Schneider is more likely to be dealt in the offseason than at the deadline.
* The Panthers want to get healthy before they decide what they want to do heading towards the trade deadline.
“We don’t know yet, hopefully we’ll have everybody back in the lineup in the next couple of week and then we’ll see what we have,” Panthers GM Dale Tallon told ESPN.com Thursday. “And then we’ll see where we’re at as well. There’s no rush here.”
* The Sharks could use a 3rd line forward and have been shopping Antero Niittymaki.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Despite the recent Penguins struggles, they don’t have anything cooking on the trade front. GM Ryan Shero has a tendency to let the market develop before moving on a deal. They are currently out of the playoffs, but they are not panicking. They don’t have a big deal in the works and any move is weeks away.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins GM Shero shot down the notion about shelving Sidney Crosby and possibly Kris Letang for the season, and use the cap relief on a big trade or 2.
“I have to have it in my mind about what we might have coming back,” Shero said. “Those guys are worth waiting for.”
There is still no timetable on Crosby and Letang’s return.
“We never even once discussed that,” Shero said of putting Crosby on long-term injured reserve to let him continue to heal for several months and finding a replacement or two through trades.
- Bob Mitchell of the Toronto Star: Trade speculation out of Philadelphia has them interested in Maple Leafs defenseman Luke Schenn.
“It doesn’t really mean much,” Schenn, 21, said. “They’re just rumours and I’m happy being here in Toronto. In the 3½ years that I’ve been here there has been a few rumours about trades that were going to happen. They come up every year somehow.”
It’s no secret the Leafs GM Brian Burke likes James van Riemsdyk. JVR signed a 6 year extension with a $4.25 million cap hit in the offseason. Schenn signed a 5 year deal with a $3.5 million cap hit just before the season started.

“What everybody is missing is that I’ve been carrying around 167 man games,” he said by telephone Thursday evening. “Forget about the season. I’m talking about the last 25 games. We’ve had 18 players go down. It’s like a merry-go-round every night. You look on the ice and what are your defensive pairs tonight? Hell, who knows? Who’s healthy?
“I think what’s important is the number of guys. You can have 167 man games with four, five, six guys out for a long period. Eighteen? Cut me a break. I told Darcy Regier one time, ‘If I was you, I would be afraid to get on the plane.’ “
The Sabres sit 11th in the East with a 18-19-5 record heading into tonight. Many players have struggled. Robyn Regher is -12. Brad Boyes has been injured and hasn’t produced when healthy. Ryan Miller is having the worst season of his career. Derek Roy is 115th in scoring. The Sabres could keep everyone together, make some trade to upgrade the roster which may not be easy, or trade players who they don’t see there long term.
“My attitude now is, ‘Let’s put Humpty [Dumpty] back together again,’ ” Pegula said. “I want our players to know that I thought we had a pretty good hockey team until all this happened. Let’s paste it back together and start a new season.”

- Jeff Miller of the OC Register: Miller thinks the Ducks should trade Ryan Getzlaf if there is a deal that significantly improves the Ducks. Miller: “For whatever reason, this just isn’t working. It isn’t working for the Ducks, and it certainly isn’t working for Getzlaf.” Getzlaf has only 6 goals and 25 points, and is on pace for 55 points. He entered the year averaging .965 points per game. Selanne may want to finish his career on a contender: “You never say ‘never,’ ” Selanne explained. “But I don’t want to waste any thoughts on it right now. It’s time to have fun here. You just keep fighting as long as you can breathe.”
- Stephen Whyno via twitter: Flames forward Rene Bourque has a hearing with the NHL over an elbow to the head of Nicklas Backstrom. Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington: Capitals Niklas Backstrom left last night’s game after taking a Rene Bourque elbow to the head. He was removed from the game for precautionary reasons, and will be evaluated today. Video at bottom of entry.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: The NHL has terminated the purchase agreement between the Blues and Matthew Hulsizer. Blues minority owner Tom Stillman has the opportunity to step in and purchase the team. Hulsizer didn’t make the NHL’s imposed deadline to buy the club. Hulsizer was attempting to restructure the financing of the deal several times. Some sources are saying that Stillman has an exclusive 75 day window to complete the deal, while other are saying the Blues can negotiate with anyone, including Hulsizer.
- Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins Pascal Dupuis, out with an upper-body injury, skated before practice and is day-to-day. Arron Asham is also day-to-day, didn’t skate yesterday but isn’t walking around with a limp after taking a shot off the knee.
- Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: The Coyotes have activated goalie Mike Smith off the IR. Curtis McElhinney has been assigned to the AHL.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers James van Riemsdyk will fill in for the injured Jaromir Jagr on the top line with Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell. Ilya Bryzgalov is expected to start on Thursday.

- Mike Organ of the Tennessean: Predators defenseman Shea Weber practiced yesterday with limited contact for the 1st time since suffering a concussion 12 days ago. “There is still no time line on him,” Trotz said. “It’s when he feels comfortable; when he feels that he’s ready to go, then he’ll come and let us know. Between the doctors, the trainers and Shea, they’ll make that decision.”

- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen has been dealing with chronic back pain. Forward James van Riemsdyk is said to have a “cam impingement in his hip” and a ‘banged up” knee. Sources say that he could require offseason surgery on the hip. Daniel Briere expects to be able to go tonight.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney missed 47 games last year after dislocating a tendon in his right ankle, and has missed 18 games this year with ankle issues, now has tendinitis in the surgically repaired ankle. He missed yesterday’s game but could be ready for Thursday.
Tom Renny: “The ankle has been a little bit weak because he’s pushing himself to get back to where he wants to be and it’s inevitable that there’s some residual pain there. He’s developed the tendinitis because he’s pushed it. We’re being safe. On the heels of the Christmas break, if we can give him five or six days off, I think it’ll help him a lot.”
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Kings winger Simon Gagne did not return for the 3rd period last night and will be evaluated today.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo skated yesterday for the 1st time in days. He suffered an upper-body injury (or a possible concussion) on Dec. 14th. He’s missed the last 5 games, but could be ready to return once he gets his conditioning back. He hopes to play tomorrow against the Kings.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Blues forward T.J. Oshie will miss 2 games due to a ligament injury in his left wrist. They expect him to return on Friday.
- Washington Post: Capitals center Mathieu Perreault went to the hospital with an upper-body injury last night. He stayed overnight in Buffalo and will return to Washington today. He was injured in the 3rd when his stick got stuck in the boards and jammed into his midsection.

- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika doesn’t think Joe Nieuwendyk is looking to add a player just yet. If they are looking to improve the most, they might eventually look for a number 1 defenseman or center, but they are not easy to get.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Some Sabres fans are calling for trades, others to fire the GM and/or coach. Sabres president Ted Black said they are not going to fire Lindy Ruff or Darcy Regier. Black asks fans to be patient. Ducks GM Bob Murray on trading Teemu Selanne at the trade deadline:
“No, he’s retiring a Duck and that’s the way it’s going to be,” Ducks GM Bob Murray told ESPN.com on Tuesday. “But the way he’s playing, why should he retire?”
If the Ducks are still at the bottom of the league around deadline time, they could begin listening to Bobby Ryan trade offers again.
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tamp Tribune: Lightning forward Martin St. Louis returned to practice yesterday wearing a full cage. No timetable has been set as to when he’ll return.

Coach Todd McLellan: “He won’t play before Christmas, and will be evaluated a little bit more over the next few days, but it’s probably going to be a little bit more longer term than what we originally thought. We’re not ready to put a timeline on it yet, but he won’t play before Christmas.”
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres defeneseman Tyler Myers has been cleared to return to the team. He is now allowed to grip his stick as he begins him recovery from a broken wrist which happened on Nov. 19th.
- TSN: The Maple Leafs have placed Colby Armstrong on the IR due to his concussion. The Leafs have recalled Darryl Boyce from the Marlies.
- Shawn Mitchell of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets goalie Curtis Sanford is expected to return today after he missed a start on Sunday and yesterday’s practice. Defenseman James Wisniewski also missed yesterday’s practice but he’s expected to return today.

Not that there’s much oxygen up there to begin with. I had trouble breathing for a few seconds there. I felt fine afterward, just a little light-headed the rest of the way. I was just basically trying to catch my breath.”
David Booth was involved in a knee-on-knee hit and will have a MRI done today.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Bruins forward Tyler Seguin was scratched last night for missing a mandatory team meeting and breakfast yesterday morning. “I did set an alarm. I woke up to it, but it wasn’t Winnipeg time, it was Boston time. I guess I got in late and didn’t think to change it. It was a mistake. I’ve got to live with it.” Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said it wasn’t the first time that he’s broken a team rule.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild goalie Josh Harding left after only 71 seconds into last night’s game. Harding was accidentally elbowed in the head by teammate Nick Schultz. Matt Hackett made his NHL debut. Devin Setoguchi also left the game with an undisclosed injury.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Kings defenseman Willie Mitchell missed his 2nd consecutive game, but coach Terry Murray indicated the he should be able to go on Thursday.

- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Capitals have fired Bruce Boudreau, and have hired Dale Hunter as their new head coach.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If Jarome Iginla decides he’d accept a trade from the Flames, Matheson doesn’t see a big market for him as he carries a $7 million salary this year and next, and most Stanley Cup contenders are close to the ceiling or maxed out. Matheson wonders if the Stars would be interested. Blue Jackets forward Derick Brassard has been shopped around the league, but there have been no takers for him and his $3+ million salary. The Oilers would definitely like to acquire Cody Franson, but Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is in no hurry to move him. Matheson keeps hearing that Sabres goalie is out with a concussion and wouldn’t mind if the Sabres dealt him. The Sabres could use a top center, but have other holes as well. His wife is a California based actress but no California based team needs a goalie. Will the Lightning be calling the Wild about their goaltenders during the summer? Josh Harding will be a UFA and Niklas Backstrom’s deal ends after next year. Would the Predators consider moving backup goalie Anders Lindback, and toss in a a Ryan Ellis or Jonathan Blum to get a forward? Matheson heard that the Wild turned down a Josh Harding for James van Riemsdyk trade when JVR was still at the University of New Hampshire a couple years ago.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Ducks GM Bob Murray said he won’t fire coach Randy Carlyle and he won’t trade any of Ryan Getzlaf, Cory Perry or Bobby Ryan, though he has had offers for them.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators are 1 of 4 teams that have interest in Blue Jackets Derick Brassard. Brassard’s $3.2 million salary for the next 2 years is a stumbling block. The Sens, and pretty much every other team, have closed the book on Kyle Turris.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Stars have placed Kari Lehtonen on the IR. They are still waiting for results from the MRI, but Heika thinks it could be a long-term injury. They have recalled Richard Bachman. Francis Wathier was also recalled, so Vernon Fiddler could be out.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers could find out today the results for Taylor Hall’s MRI. If Hall is out for awhile, Matheson thinks they should move Magnus Paajarvi up with Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky. If Paajarvi can’t cut with Horcoff and Hemsky, it might be time for him to spend a few weeks in Oklahoma City in the AHL. Renny said that sending Paajarvi down “has been discussed.”

- Randy Youngman of the OC Register: The Ducks have lost 6 in a row, and sit 1 point out of last place with 6-12-4 record. Is it time to fire the coach? Trade one of their top players? They’re likely not going to fire Randy Carlyle. Bobby Ryan said “So we can’t blame them if they pull the trigger on something.” If GM Bob Murray were to make a major trade, it would likely involve Ryan Getzlaf or Bobby Ryan, as Corey Perry is probably untouchable.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: 8 teams have called Coyotes GM Don Maloney within a half hour after they signed Kyle Turris. Two teams were strongly considering signing him to an offer sheet.

- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: There’s 12 days until the start of Bruins camp and Brad Marchand still hasn’t re-signed. GM Peter Chiarelli and agent Wade Arnott won’t comment. 3 comparables that will likely be used are: James van Riemsdyk’s 6 years and $25.5 million, Logan Couture 2 years at $5.75 million, and on the low end Nathan Gerbe 3 years at $4.3 million. Shinzawa thinks Marchand should come in just under Couture’s deal, possibly a 2 year deal at $5 million.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons thinks the NHLPA should poll it’s members to see if they think fighting should stay in the NHL and the ones doing the fighting deserve to be heard.

- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The LA Kings have refined some of the concepts in their offer to RFA Drew Doughty, and added some choices for length of contract, likely 6 to 8 years.
“Everything’s been amicable. We’re waiting to hear back from them. They said they’d get back to us in a day or two,” Lombardi said. “So in terms of distance, I’ll probably have a better handle on that when we hear back.”
The Kings also filed their grievance over the Colin Fraser trade with the Oilers, with the Oilers having a few days to respond. Bettman will late decide if they need to hold a hearing or not.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: GM’s of other teams may not be too thrilled with the 6 year $25.5 million contract the Flyers gave James van Riemsdyk yesterday. Teams will now have to deal with van Riemsdyk comparables when trying to sign some of their young guys. If Taylor Hall gets 55 points this year, do the Oilers have to give him $5 million in a 6 year deal? Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi could be in a similar situation.
- John Buccigross via twitter: James van Riemsdyk salary breakdown: 2012-13 $2.5 million, 2013-14 $3.75 million, 2014-15 $4.5 million, 2015-16 $4.75 million, 2016-17 $5 million, and 2017-18 $5 million.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Maple Leafs forward Matthew Lombardi has been declared free of concussion symptoms but he still could miss the start of training camp according to GM Brian Burke.
“He is cleared for full activity on the bike,” Burke said in a phone interview. “The last report I got he was doing 20-plus minutes without symptoms. He has been declared symptom-free and now it’s about getting the workload back up.”
Burke also added that “Right now, I’ve got nothing going,” and “This is the group we’re likely to head in with.” Luke Schenn’s agent said that he expects to meet with the Leafs later this week and Burke said “We remain optimistic that we’ll sign him before camp.”
- Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: 39 year old Mike Knuble signed a 1 year deal with the Capitals but wants to sign an extension.
“I’m out there playing for another deal,” he said. “I’m not riding off into the sunset. I want to make that point clear to everybody. This is no farewell song.”
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: After missing last season with a concussion, Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador is symptom free and has suffered no setbacks during/after “full tilt” workouts.
“I’m back in full training, full everything, so I’m excited for the season,” he said today.
“There’s really no concern about my long-term health, actually,” he said. “The doctors have already put me through a lot of those tests, so I’m pretty excited about that. If I get hurt, I get hurt. That’s just the game. I’m in a good situation where I don’t have to be concerned about a lot of things.”

- Damian Cristodero via twitter: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is planning on having Ryan Malone play the final 2 preseason games and havgin him ready to go for the start of the regular season.

Flyers sign James van Riemsdyk to a 6 year extension

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed winger James van Riemsdyk to a 6 year contract extension worth $25.5 million, a $4.25 million cap hit (Scott Burnside)
Do you think this is a smart move by the Flyers to lock him up at $4.25 million after only 2 years and 75 points?
Sharp will be a UFA after next season … JVR and Giroux enabled Flyers to deal Carter and Richards … Zibanejad should remain in Sweden

- Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago: Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp will be a UFA after next season. He was asked about when a new deal could be done,
“I don’t have much to say about it,” Sharp said. “I stated I want to stay here and hopefully the organization wants me to stay. Besides that, I’m not really going to focus on it. I’m just going to be the best player I can be and be a good teammate and those things kind of sort those things out.”
Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman has stated in the past that he’s already reached out to Sharp’s agent.
- Tim Rohan of the Philadelphia Inquirer: With the solid play of Claude Giroux and James Van Riemsdyk, it enabled the Flyers to trade Jeff Carter and Mike Richards.
“[With] the ascension of James over the last part of the season and particularly the playoffs, I think we have two good young players there that are on the verge of doing even better things for our team,” Holmgren said
“I’m a guy who has been here for a couple of years now, so I’m going to have to step up and take a bigger role, maybe be a little bit more of leader now,” van Riemsdyk said.
- Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen: Scanlan doesn’t think the Senators should rush 1st round pick Mika Zibanejad. He could benefit from another year in the Swedish Elite League, gaining strength and experience before coming over. The Sens have 12 forwards on one way contracts so it’s likely he goes back to Sweden.
