- Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Canadiens trade the rights to James Wisniewski to the Blue Jackets. It will be a 2012 5th round pick if he signs, a 7th if he doesn’t.
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Jussi Jokinen’s agent hopes to have a deal done with the Hurricanes by Friday.
- Dustin Leed: Leed and TheFouthPeriod think that Ville Leino hasn’t re-signed with the Flyers as the Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Penguins, Blackhawks, Hurricanes, Avalanche, Bruins, Rangers and Kings have interest in him.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: NHL statement on NHL team(s) improperly filing qualifying offers to RFA’s is: “We’re not aware of any defects relating to Qualifying Offers tendered by NSH to certain of team’s players as several media outlets reported. Those players, having timely received Qualifying Offers, will be Restricted Free Agents as of July 1, and both the players and the team…will be accorded the various rights and benefits of Restricted Free Agency as are set forth in CBA.” The NHLPA has raised the improper filing with agents of the player that are affected.

- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Semyon Varlamov’s agent said he’s picked the KHL, but didn’t name the club. Varlamov’s rights are owned by Lokomotiv, but it’s unclear if he’ll sign with them or SKA. SKA filed a complaint with the KHL.

- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets and Jan Hejda continue to work a deal, likely for 3 or 4 years. The Jackets will still look to sign a defenseman if they re-sign Hejda, 2 if they don’t.
- Joe Yerdon via twitter: The Sabres re-sign Nathan Gerbe to a 3 year, $4.3 million.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: The Blues will have 1 or 2 forward spots open depending on if Matt D’Agostini is re-signed or not. They are looking to add a defenseman and possibly a back up goalie. Forwards they could look at are Tomas Fleischmann, Chad LaRose (re-signed by Car. after this article was written), Joel Ward, Chris Higgins, Andrew Brunette and Jamie Langenbrunner. Defenseman they could look at are Jan Hejda, Kent Huskins, Brent Sopel or Steve Montador.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: T.J. Oshie’s agent Matt Oates, says that “things are going well” in their negotiations with Blues GM Doug Armstrong.

- Nick Kypreos via twitter: “Perception has #Bruins Horton in Van just 2 inspire but told he feels healthy enough to play and wants to convince Dr’s/team to let him play.” Joe Haggerty via twitter: Bruins coach Claude Julien said that Nathan Horton was still experiencing post-concussion symptoms as of yesterday. Players have to be symptom free for 7 days.
- Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: On Thursday and Friday, Ilya Bryzgalov will meet with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren and other organizational members. Bryzgalov’s agent Ritch Winter will continue to negotiate, not much progress has been made since the trade. He’s seeking more than $6 million a season, and it’s expected to be at least 5 years.
- Aaron Portline of the Columbus Dispatch: Defenseman Jan Hejda and the Columbus Blues Jackets are talking about a new contract, and hope to get something done by July 1st. Three UFA’s (Scottie Upshall, Andrew Murray, and Mathieu Garon) are likely to hit the open market. “With Scottie, we’ve said we’re certainly open to having him back with our club. I’m not sure we’re going to do anything before July 1, but we’re certainly open to talking after July 1.” GM Scott Howson has made it clear that the 8th overall pick could be had for immediate help. The Blue Jackets have already sent qualifying offers to RFA’s Jake Voracek and Marc Methot. It’s unsure if Anton Stralman and Sami Lepisto will get qualifying offers. They will try to re-sign UFA’s Kyle Wilson, Trevor Frischmon and Ben Guite, but they may test the market. Minor league RFA’s that are expected to get qualifying offers are: Mike Blunden, Tomas Kana and Nick Holden.
- Aaron Portline via twitter: Mike Commodore is likely to be bought out soon by the Blue Jackets.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers will likely try to trade 4th line agitator Zack Stortini at the NHL entry draft for a pick. If they can’t trade him they could either send him a qualifying offer to retain his rights or let him become a UFA. The Stars were interested in Stortini at one point last year but didn’t have an open roster spot. The Oilers can buyout Sheldon Souray starting today.
- Michael Traikos of the National Post: The Maple Leafs re-signed Carl Gunnarsson to a 2 year deal worth $2.6 million. “We’re very happy with his development,” said general manager Brian Burke, “and what he needs to do is come up with an 82-game season. He had a real good second-half each of the last two years. But he’s got to start better than he has.” Expect the Leafs to turn their focus to RFA Luke Schenn now. They are also expected to try and re-sign Clarke MacArthur, Tyler Bozak and Tim Brent.
“It’s not time-sensitive, for either player,” Burke said of negotiations with Schenn and MacArthur. “We’ve told Clarke if he wants to file for arbitration he can go ahead and file for arbitration. That’s part of the process. That’s part of the collective bargaining agreement. But we anticipate that he’s going to be under contract and play for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fall.”
- Gary Lawless via twitter: Possible candidates for the Winnipeg coaching spot are Kirk Muller, Claude Noel and Bob Woods.
- Josh Coope of The Tennessean: After making it into the 2nd round of the playoffs, the Predators are having their highest season-ticket renewal rate. The team is planning on unveiling new uniforms later this summer.

- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby has started his off-ice offseason workouts. Penguins GM Ray Shero plans to re-sign Dustin Jeffrey to a new deal this month. Tyler Kennedy is a RFA and the Pens make take him to arbitration to see what he’s awarded. If he’s in the $2 million range, which comparables suggest he could get, they may keep him. Rossi thinks he could also be traded. Defenseman Matt Niskanen could be available if any team is interested. Max Talbot is asking for 4 years and Pascal Dupuis is asking for a 3 year contract, the Pens don’t really want to go that long for either. Mike Rupp may be thinking he can get more on the open market than from the Penguins.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets have informed Ethan Moreau, Chris Clark and Craig Rivet that they won’t be re-signed. The Jackets are still thinking about re-signing Jan Hejda (50/50) and Scottie Upshall (unlikely).
- Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren spent part of the weekend finding out the parameters to get Ilya Bryzgalov signed to a 5 to possibly 8 year term. He might be able to get upwards of $6 million if he were to hit the free agent market on July 1st. To get Bryzgalov at a cap friendly number of around $5 million, they may have to start to $7 million and go down to $2 million on a 7 or 8 year deal. Putting Ian Laperriere on a LTIR would take $1.2 million off their cap number, they’re at about $59 million now. Trading Jeff Carter is one option, moving Matt Carle and Kris Versteeg is another. Sergei Bobrovsky may also find himself in a trade as he would have to pass through waivers if he was to be sent to the AHL or recalled from AHL. If Bryzgalov is signed to a long-term deal, Bobrovsky may not get his shot as a #1, and they may be able to get a 2nd round pick or top prospect in return.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Craig MacTavish was in Minnesota last week and had his 2nd interview for the vacant head coaching position. He’s considered to be the leading candidate at the moment.

- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Minnesota Wild may consider moving defenseman Brent Burns because they may not want to pay him $5 million a season when his current contract runs out after next year. They’ll want offense in a return for him. The Flyers have extra forwards and the Sharks have always liked him. The Blue Jackets likely won’t re-sign defenseman Jan Hejda. The Avalanche are the best bet to sign UFA Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun turns 35 on July 2nd, so if he’s not signed on July 1st, his salary cap number will stay on the books if he retires and can’t be bought out. Omsk of the KHL has expressed some interest.
- Phil Sheridan of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers Dman Chris Pronger is unlikely for tonight’s game, but could make a return on Wednesday for Game 4. Coach Peter Laviolette isn’t saying who will be between the pipes for tonight’s game. Sheridan thinks the Flyers should go with Sergei Bobrovsky, but others are saying Brian Boucher. Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Harrington says that it seems likely that the Flyers will go with Boucher in net.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks thinks that if the Boston Bruins don’t make it to at least the conference finals that Devils GM Lou Lamoriello will have the chance to rehire Claude Julien as the next coach of the Devils.
- Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Consitution: Thrashers RFA Zach Bogosian was asked about his future with the Thrashers,
I guess it will be interesting to see what happens. I haven’t had any talks with management yet. I’m just going home and getting ready to be the best player I can be. … That’s what my agent is there for. I’ve had him for awhile so I’m pretty comfortable with him. It’s something that I haven’t put too much thought into but now that the season is over you can put more thought into.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Former NHL coach Craig MacTavish has said it’s “unlikely” that he would coach St. Petersburg in the KHL. Last week it was reported that team chairman and KHL president Alexander Medvedev said that MacTavish was one of four candidates for the head coaching position. It’s been reported that MacTavish did fly to Russia late last week.

- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: The Ottawa Senators have fired coaches Cory Clouston and assistants Greg Carvel and Brad Lauer. GM Murray said he’s been evaluating the staff for months.
“Based on the performance over the course of the year, we felt a change was necessary,” he said.
“It’s always difficult. Coaches get the finger pointed at them maybe more than they should.
“But we felt in this case – all of us, coaching staff and management – that at training camp we had a competitive hockey team and for whatever reason we didn’t play to the level we thought and expected, and as a result changes had to be made.”
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch mentions potential coaches for the Senators. Lindy Ruff, John Tortorella, Dave Cameron, Kurt Kleindorst, Alain Vigneault, Kevin Dineen, Randy Cunneyworth, and Bob Hartley.
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Sportak wonders if the Flames should trade their stars, Jarome Iginla and Miikka Kiprusoff, and rebuild. They don’t have many top-6 forwards/top-4 D on entry level contracts, building blocks for the future. Iginla will be 34 this summer, Kiprusoff will be 35 in October. If going for a complete rebuild, Robyn Regehr could be traded.
- Eric Francis in the Ottawa Sun: Francis doesn’t think the Flames should consider trading Jarome Iginla, “anyone who thinks an organization should do anything in a player’s best interest obviously doesn’t have the slightest clue how to run a business, let alone a hockey team.”
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks backup Cory Schneider posted a 16-4-2 record this season. He’ll make $900,000 and he could be on the move this summer. Columubus has shown some interest. “I’ve proved that I can play in this league and that I belong,” he said. “It’s not an adventure every single night. I can be consistent and win games and know what’s going to happen if I have to handle a bigger work load.”
- Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Hurricanes missed the playoffs again, and DeCock thinks coach Paul Maurice could be fired, it might be time for a change. They’ve missed the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season.
- Barbara Matson of the Boston Globe: Bruins forward Tyler Seguin played in 72 games this season, but has found himself a healthy scratch of late, and that could continue in to the playoffs.
“That’s a lot of speculation that he’s fighting for [a position], whether he’s in, he’s out,’’ Julien said. “Understandably. I’m just saying, for me, those are tough questions to answer because you guys are all looking for what is my possible scenario. I’m going back to the same thing — we don’t know what’s going to happen until Monday. We’ll find out Monday where he stands and where the rest of the team stands. Lots of things can happen from here until then.’’
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: The Blue Jackets need to make the playoffs next year, and could trade their 1st round pick this year for immediate help. GM Scott Howson, “Yeah, we would look at trading the pick if it was something that could make an immediate impact on the team,”
- Tom Reed of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda will be a UFA and he hopes to sign a 3-4 year deal with Columbus. He’s unsure if the Blue Jackets want him back as there haven’t been any talks. Defenseman Craig Rivet could retire.
- Damian Cox via twitter: The Maple Leafs could sign 2006 7th round pick Leo Komarov (KHL) soon.
Rumored Avalanche-Kings deal … Rangers turning to McCabe … Canadiens after Penner, others … Richards not interested in Leafs

- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Colorado Avalanche now have 5 centers (Duchene, Stastny, McClement, O’Reilly and Dupuis), with Matt Duchene getting close to returning, he’s expected to practice today. Dater expects one of them to be traded by the deadline, with Duchene likely being the only one that would be on the ‘untouchable’ list. Dater has heard a few rumors regarding Paul Stastny including, “Stastny, TJ Galiardi and maybe a pick/another player to Los Angeles for Jack Johnson, Jonathan Bernier and Jarret Stoll.” Dater adds, “This is a blog, so I am NOT reporting that as a fact, or, again, something I have great confidence in.” Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Berstein can’t see that rumored deal happening. David Pagnotta via twitter: He’s hearing that the Avalanche could be pulling off another big deal, lots of chatter coming from there.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Marian Gaborik was forced out of yesterday’s game with a concussion. Coach Tortorella said that Gaborik complained intermittently for a week for not feeling well, but didn’t miss any time. It might change the interest Gaborik was getting leading up to the trade deadline. The Kings were rumored to ask about him. As to the extent of his concussion, it’s not known yet.
- Mark Spector via twitter: The Rangers have turned their attention to Bryan McCabe after one last discussion about putting a claim in for Sheldon Souray.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Indications are that the Blue Jackets won’t be putting a waiver claim on Sheldon Souray. Darren Dreger via twitter: One team that was interested in Souray, no longer is.
- David Pagnotta via twitter: The Canadiens are pushing for Dustin Penner and others, Alex Kovalev could be a last resort.
- Marc Antonie Godin via twitter: The Canadiens were making a play for Chris Stewart before he was traded to the Blues.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Brad Richards supposedly told a Tampa source that his first choice is to remain with the Stars. His other choices would be to return to the Lightning or to the Rangers, and hinted he may have some interest in Carolina. “When asked about Toronto, he apparently said nothing but shook his head.”
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Rossi has heard from an agent and Penguins source that the asking price for Ales Hemsky is “huge.” “At least first round pick and a player off the NHL roster, probably more.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: (Q & A) Heika doesn’t think the Stars were in on any Tomas Kaberle talks as the Lenders may not want to add more than a $1 million in salary to this year’s payroll. He’s being to think the Stars won’t do much at the trade deadline. Heika thinks that Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk has to listen to all offers for Brad Richards. If Richards waived his no trade clause “it would be because Joe asked him to.” If he reaches free agency, Richards would likely chose the team he felt he had the best chance to win the cup.
- Mark Spector via twitter: Spector notes the Flyers are still not sold on their goaltending.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If Sharks defenseman Marc-Eduoard Vlasic’s upper-body injury is serious, they could be looking to add another defenseman. They are not saying much on Antero Niittymaki, so they may need a backup goalie. With Stars forward Jamie Benn still out with a shoulder injury, it lessens the chances of James Neal being dealt for an offensive defenseman.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Leafs GM Brian Burke has cleared more cap space, and is looking to add a defenseman before the deadline.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson’s top 10 list of players that could be traded: 1. Brad Richards 2. Ales Hemsky 3. Bryan McCabe 4. Chris Phillips 5. Dustin Penner 6. More Maple Leafs deals coming … Murray told to dump salaries in Ottawa … No pressure in Edmonton to make a deal

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: More Maple Leafs could be on their way out, with Tomas Kaberle’s name at the front again this year,
“You’re right, about the last few years, you listen to the same stuff all the time,” Kaberle told ESPN.com after the team’s morning skate at Air Canada Centre. “It’s not a thing that a player wants to hear. He just wants to concentrate on hockey. But obviously it’s happening [around the trade deadline], the media analyzes it more and more. I just have to focus on hockey.”
Kaberle holds the no-trade clause. The Bruins, Canadiens, and Rangers are reportedly interested. The Leafs will eventually approach Kaberle with an offer, and he’ll say either yes or no.
“That’s the NHL. It’s going to happen or not. I’m up to it, whatever happens, happens. It’s something every player has to go through at the deadline.”
Kris Versteeg is also wondering about his future as a Leafs as his name is in the trade rumors as well.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk instructed Bryan Murray to get rid of as much salary as possible. Mike Fisher didn’t really want to leave Ottawa, but Nashville is a great fit, professionally and personally. The Kings and Hurricanes had ‘acceptable offers’ on the table for him. Chris Phillips could be next, and Strickland is still hearing that they could be open to re-signing on July 1st.
- Corey Masisak of NHL.com: Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson,
“Right now, we’re showing signs of climbing back in. If we can do a deal that makes sense for the team, we’re going to do it.”
If the Blue Jackets decide to sell, Jan Hejda and Mathieu Garon could be made available.
Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini,
“This year there’s not the pressure to move players in order to make room. We have enough room for our young players,” Tambellini said to the Journal. “But I’m approaching this as I have other deadlines — where I am wide open to listening to ideas of how other teams can help make us a better team now, and maybe importantly, in the future.”
Jim Vandermeer, Dustin Penner, and Ales Hemsky’s names have been out there.
Washington is happy with Semyon Varlamov and Michal Neuvirth and won’t be adding a ‘potential No. 1 goalie’ this month. Washington may look at adding a center.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein doesn’t think the Kings are waiting too long to make a deal, will go down to deadline day.
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Peter Forsberg may be in the Avalanche lineup tomorrow against Columbus.
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton Oilers GM Tambellini,
“There’s a lot of different scenarios that will come across the desk in the next couple of weeks and if it’s younger, great,” Tambellini said. “If it’s something that makes sense as far as a veteran, we’ll look at that, too.

- Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province: There are rumors that the NHL is looking into buying the Atlanta Thrashers and moving them to Winnipeg. They would raise $160 million, putting $35 million towards running the team, and offer $125 million to buy the team. It’s not know how far this idea has gone, or if it’s just in the tire kicking stages.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson could be on the hotseat, and possibly the same for Darcy Regier if the new owner wants to start fresh.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Bruins should announce this week if Marc Savard is shut down for the season or not. The Bruins could be looking for forward help and Jackets, Senators, Oilers and Panthers have forwards available for trade. With Evgeni Malkin done for the year it’s likely the Penguins will look at add some scoring. The Thrashers are looking to move Nik Antropov, Ron Hainsey and Freddy Modin.The only way Florida brings back Tomas Vokoun is if it’s on a 1 year deal. The Predators, Kings, and Lightning are looking at Mike Fisher, but the Senators are unlikely to move him. The Sens are looking for 2 top prospects and a high pick. The Canadiens, Sharks, Bruins and Capitals could be interested in Chris Phillips.
- David Kalan of NHL.com: What might the Penguins do with Malkin now done. Jason Arnott might be of interest to the Penguins. The Pens will be able to bring in $8.1 million in salary cap at the deadline. The Pens now have the salary space to add an Ales Hemsky or Dustin Penner, and if shooting for the moon, Jarome Iginla. Malkin’s number comes back on the books next year, so bringing in some help that is under contract next year could be difficult to do.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said he won’t discuss contract extensions with any of his 5 UFA’s, so they may become trade bait. Jan Hejda, Mathieu Garon, Ethan Moreau and Chris Clark and Andrew Murray will all be UFAs. Mike Commodore could be bought out in the summer if they can’t find a team to take him.

- NHL Sources Say: The Hockeycentral panel discuss what the Penguins might do to replace Evgeni Malkin (Alex Kovalev an option) as well as a potential trade between Edmonton and Ottawa (Penner and Phillips as key pieces of the deal). Yzerman may be looking to improve along the blueline, possibly Beachemin and Phillips. Senators are looking for a goaltender.

“There are certain hits in a game that are tolerable if you have the puck,” a visibly angry Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “(If) you hit a guy without the puck you can kill a guy. It’s the most dangerous hit in the history of the game. He tried to hurt him. That’s as a bad a hit as you can ever have in the game.”
