Flames depth allowed them to move Langkow … What if Couturier makes Flyers? Isles looking for D, Kuba? Whitney, Malone expect to be ready for camp

  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Jay Feaster cited the Flames depth where it matters most as one of the reasons he sent center Daymond Langkow to the Coyotes for winger Lee Stempniak. The Flames are going to see if Mikael Backlund can center the top line with Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay. The Flames also have Brendan Morrison, Olli Jokinen and Matt Stajan down the middle. Langkow carries a $4.5 million cap hit this year, Stempniak carries a $1.9 million hit. Niklas Hagman’s time as a Flame could be running short and he may find himself making $3 million in the AHL.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly: Some think that 2011 1st round pick Sean Couturier could make the Flyers roster, which could create a logjam at center. Down the middle they have Danny Briere, Claude Giroux, Blair Betts, Brayden Schenn and Ben Holmstrom. Michael Nylander is also heading to camp on a tryout.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank suggests that the Islanders could be looking for a veteran defenseman. Warren wonders if the Isles would be interested in Filip Kuba. The Isles are $2.3 million below the salary cap floor. Chris Campoli and Bryan McCabe are free agent defenseman still available.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney injured his surgically repaired right ankle skating earlier this month, but hopes to be ready for the start of training camp. “I rolled over on the foot … caught a rut in the ice. Minor sprain, I think,” said Whitney, “I’ll be back in Edmonton on Saturday. I don’t think it’s serious.”
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Pat Morris, the agent for former Oilers defenseman Steve Staios:

“He’s been training with all the young players at Matt Nichols’ camp in Toronto. I really think Steve could help a young team like the Islanders or Colorado (Avalanche). He played 23 of the last 27 games for Calgary last season, was an even-or plus-player in 18 of those games and had eight points.”

  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning winger Ryan Malone had surgery in July to repair some damage from the shoulder separation he suffered in first round of the playoffs.

“It was just kind of nagging, so I went to get it looked at it and it was still kind of separated so we had to go get it fixed,” Malone said. “After the season there was still all the swelling so after everything went down, that’s when we found some other stuff that had to be taken care of.”

Initial reports were saying he would miss up to 6 months, but Malone said he expects to be ready for the season opener on Oct. 7th. Malone hasn’t been cleared for contact and likely won’t before the start of camp.

  • Lindsay Applebaum of the Washington Post: Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun wants to go out and enjoy playing hockey. He was disappointed with the offers he got in early July, including the 3 year offer from the Panthers.

“It was something I was looking at as, you know, I want to enjoy hockey. I want to play in playoffs,” Vokoun said Monday. “It’s been really tough for me. I lost four years. I’ve been sitting every summer here in South Florida, which I love, in the afternoons swimming in the pool, and by 7:30 at night I put on the TV and watch playoff hockey every single year. If you care and love playing hockey, it’s not an easy thing to do.”

  • Gordon McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Mikael Samuelsson, who had surgery last May, is back on the ice and is feeling stronger in the groin and hip area. He had abductor-tendon and sports hernia surgery, and began training in July.
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: “I don’t know about you, but if I had Drew Doughty on my team, I’d do everything to make sure he was signed, happy, and ready to lead my Los Angeles Kings team. The last thing I’d want is to drag my franchise player through the negotiating mud all summer with no contract agreed to with three weeks until training camp.”

Sharks trade for Sheppard … Pronger likely to miss start of training camp … Savard unlikely to retire

  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: The Sharks have sent a 2013 3rd round pick to the Wild for forward James Sheppard. Sheppard was a 1st round pick of the Wild in 2006, scoring 11 goals and 38 assists in 224 career games for the Wild. He was suspended all of last season by the Wild after suffering a knee injury in an ATV accident. Sheppard had another procedure this summer, and won’t be ready for the start of training camp.
  • Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said that defenseman Chris Pronger may not be ready for the start of training camp. He is recovering well from back and hand surgery, and has been given permission by doctors to step up his rehab.
  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Even if Marc Savard continues to experience post-concussion symptoms, he’s unlikely to retire as he’s still owed $21.05 million.. “If Savvy retires, he would not be entitled to the benefits of the contract,’’ GM Peter Chiarelli said in an email. A more likely scenario would be for him to fail the physical each year and go on LTIR.
  • Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Coyotes GM Don Maloney said that contract negotiations with Kyle Turris and Mikkel Boedker are ongoing and expects to have them signed before training camp.

Ducks acquire Jarkko Ruutu from the Senators for a pick

The Anaheim Ducks have acquired Jarkko Ruutu from the Ottawa Senators for a 2011 6th round pick.

Ruutu will give the Ducks 3rd or 4th line some nice sandpaper for their playoff drive.

It doesn’t seem like much of a return for the Senators. If you’re only getting a 6th rounder now, why not wait till closer to deadline day to see if can get more for him?

Habs looking for top 6 and a Dman … Senators that are/might be available … White may be dealt soon … Flyers shopping Zherdev

  • David Pagnotta via twitter: The Canadiens are still looking for a top 6 forward, and adding Paul Mara doesn’t prevent them from adding another defenseman. Mara was a depth move with a cap hit of $210,000 for them. Still looking to add another Dman.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray,

“I’m not trying to trade everybody,” said Murray following the Kelly deal.

“I’m trying to trade some other people or move some other people, but it’s certainly not a housecleaning by any means.”

Top candidates to be moved by the Senators: Chris Phillips, Jarkko Ruutu, Chris Neil (Pens and Habs interested), and Chris Campoli. Possible Senators on the move: Milan Michalek, Filip Kuba and Matt Carkner. They’ll try to move Sergei Gonchar and Alex Kovalev.

  • Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes are considering a trade offer for Ian White, and he could be moved in the next day or two, or not at all.

“Teams out there are looking for different things, and we have something to consider,” Rutherford said in an interview Wednesday. “This could go one way or the other.

“We have an offer, so we decided to pull [White] back for a day or two. But he could be back in the lineup this week.”

It’s not known which team made the offer, if it was a player-for-player deal or draft picks or prospects.

  • Anthony Sanfilippo of DelcoTimes: Ville Leino missed last night’s game but should be able to go Friday according to Paul Holmgren. The Flyers opted to use Jody Shelly instead of Nik Zherdev in Leino’s place. The Flyers are trying to trade Zherdev, and if they can’t find any takers he might get waived.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: When talking about Ales Hemsky trade rumors he asked, “What am I worth?” Matheson thinks that when looking at the deal the Senators and Leafs got for Mike Fisher and Kris Versteeg, it would be more than that. A 1st round pick and another draft pick or good NHLer?
  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Atlanta Thrashers have begun contract talks with Andrew Ladd, and should have a deal done by the trade deadline. Strickland doesn’t see the Avalanche doing much. The Blue Jackets will look to move a Dman for a forward. Penguins are looking for a forward, with minor rumblings that they’d move Alex Goligoski. Don’t expect anything from the Blackhawks. If the Sabres fallout of playoff contention they might move Jordan Leopold. A couple teams are looking at Blues forward Brad Winchester, including the Canucks. The Blues have made Ty Conklin available and will consider Eric Brewer who would consider waiving his no-trade clause for the right team.
  • Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Brunside doesn’t see the Flyers doing much more given their cap situation. The Lightning are looking for defensive help, and won’t give up a 1st or 2nd round picks in a trade. LeBrun doesn’t think the Hurricanes will move Joni Pitkanen unless the fall out of contention before the deadline. John-Michael Liles may be a fallback for the “failed Kaberle suitors.” Alex Kovalev could be a nice fit in Pittsburgh, maybe for a 4th or 5th round pick.

Moves coming for the Bruins and ‘Hawks? Canucks lose another D … Plenty of scouts at 2 games last night

  • James Murphy of ESPN Boston: With Marc Savard being put on LTIR, “We’re obviously going to have some flexibility now with replacement players, so in the next few weeks prior to the trade deadline, we’ll be busy,” Chiarelli said. Chiarelli could go after a defenseman and scoring depth, and not necessarily a center to replace Savard as they are deep up the middle. The Bruins have been looking for a puck moving defenseman for awhile. Tomas Kaberle and Chris Phillips have been mentioned, but Murphy thinks they have other Dman similar to Phillips, so he may be a last resort. Kaberle has a no trade and hasn’t submitted a list of teams he might waive it for. Sources are saying there may be teams he’d consider going to. One other option could be Thrashers Zach Bogosian (price tag would be high), who’s struggle this year, is a RFA this year and the ownership problem may cause them to shed money.
  • Tim Sassone via twitter: The Chicago Blackhawks could use a spark, GM Stan Bowman has 3 weeks to find that piece, could be a defenseman or a top 9 forward. They won’t do a blockbuster trade, nor do they need or over-react to recent slide. The ‘Hawks don’t have much cap space to take on a big contract for draft picks or prospects. Would teams be interested in Skille, Stalberg, Kopecky or Boynton?
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: The San Jose Sharks are on a roll at 7-0-1 and may not be looking to make any trades at the moment. “We’ve already made changes,” Wilson said, referring to the Jan. 18 acquisitions of Kyle Wellwood and Ben Eager. “The majority of changes now are going to be the growth of our own players, playing up to their abilities and they’re trending in the right direction.”
  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks have lost another defenseman as Keith Ballard left last nights game in the 1st period with a knee injury. He’ll have an MRI today. Sami Salo might be ready to go on Saturday against the Flames.
  • Don Brennan of Ottawa Sun: Jarkko Ruutu is on the trade block for the Senators, and was made a healthy scratch last night. When asked if he wants to get traded,  “The way I look at things, if I happen to get traded, I get traded … The other stuff I can’t control.”
  • David Pagnotta via twitter: Scouts at the Maple Leafs-Thrashers game last night: Anaheim, Carolina, Detroit, Edmonton, Montreal, Nashville, NY Rangers, Ottawa and San Jose.
  • Joshua Cooper via twitter: Scouts at the Oilers-Predators game: San Jose, Phoenix, Vancouver, Columbus, Chicago and 2 from Atlanta.
  • Columbus Dispatch: According to the ‘Sports Business Journal’, local Fox Sports Net numbers are  10,000 for Columbus,  Phoenix at 9,000, Atlanta at 6,000 and Florida at 3,000.

Sens can move Fisher to anyone … That Forsberg guy … Vokoun wants to talk to Tallon … Burke wants to negotiate with MacArthur … What to do with Hemsky, Penner

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch confirms that Mike Fisher’s full no-movement clause ended after last season, he was to give the team a 10 team no-trade list but never did. There were reports that he would have to submit a list before he’s able to be dealt but hat may not be the case, and he’s not that worried about it. So it looks like the Senators would be able to trade him anywhere. Fisher wants to stay in Ottawa, and it would take a good deal to move him. The Sens are more likely to deal Chris Phillips and Jarkko Ruutu. “I really don’t think they’ll trade Mike Fisher,” said a league executive. “They’ll talk about it, but they’ll want a lot in return. Good players are hard to find. You should keep them. You can’t trade everybody.”
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Colorado Avalanche coach Joe Sacco on Peter Forsberg, “The ball is in his court.” Forsberg practiced again yesterday. Sources say Forsberg has experienced some discomfort with his foot, but is using a brace in attempt to get a better fit in his skate. A decision may come by Sunday. Peter Mueller practiced yesterday but no timetable is set. Ryan O’Reilly (shoulder) could return on Saturday.
  • Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun: The Oilers will have to decide soon if they want to keep or trade Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner. There are centers and defenseman in the draft that could interest the Oilers, so collecting some draft picks could be option. They will listen to offers for Gilbert Brule, Andrew Cogliano, Kurtis Foster, Colin Fraser, J.F. Jacques, Nikolai Khabibulin, Steve MacIntyre, Ladislav Smid, Jason Strudwick and Jim Vandermeer. Jones thinks the Oilers could get more for Penner than Hemsky. Jones thinks they should keep Hemsky and trade Penner.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: Tomas Vokoun hasn’t had any contract extension offers from the Florida Panthers, but he does hope to talk to GM Dale Tallon when they get back. Vokoun has a no-movement clause. Stephen Weiss and Bryan McCabe have no-trade clauses, with Weiss not knowing he had one until a few weeks ago. Winger Evgeny Dadonov will be out at last a month with a broken finger.
  • Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Brian Burke has said he wants to negotiate a contract extension for Clarke MacArthur. MacArthur is on a 1 year deal at $1.1 million after the Thrashers walked away from a $2.4 million arbitration ruling. He’s leading the Maple Leafs in scoring with 41 points, and will be looking for a nice raise.

“We have not approached him yet. That’s something we’ll get to in the next little while. You have to figure out what a fair salary is for a player who has had a breakthrough year,” said the GM.

“He’s not a player we intend to move at the deadline, whether he has signed an extension or not at that point.”

Responds MacArthur: “I’d love to be a Leaf for the rest of my career, but that’s up to them.”

  • Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks have sent Sami Salo to the AHL on a 3 game conditioning stint, and should return to the Canucks next week. With Alex Edler out 2-3 months, the Canucks won’t have to move any salary when Salo returns.
  • Ken Belson of the NY Times: One NJ Devil owner (Jeff Vanderbeek) wants to expand, 2 minority owners may be looking to sell their shares.

Senators about to enter re-building mode

  • Roy MacGregor of the Globe and Mail: In many minds, the Ottawa Senators season is a write off, and it’s time to look towards next season. The fans will likely accept a complete rebuild. Bryan Murray is rumored to be moving to a Senior Adviser role with the club. Eugene Melnyk has said the Cory Clouston will finish the year out as the teams coach, Murray will finish the year before handing the team off to someone else. Pierre McGuire has already been interviewed for the GM job, and there will be more interviews to take place. Coaching replacements could be Kirk Muller, Craig MacTavish and Kevin Dineen. Whoever is hired as the next coach will be chosen by the next GM. Murray will continue to look to unload his ‘assets’. Under-achieving Alex Kovalev could be moved, as well as defenseman Sergei Gonchar. Daniel Alfredsson and Chris Phillips may be asked to waive their no-trade clauses.
  • Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen: Bryan Murray will continue to attempt to find new homes for Chris Phillips, Jarkko Ruutu, and Alex Kovalev, and bring in prospects and draft picks. Owner Melnyk said the team needs a ‘game changer’ but that will likely have to wait until the draft where they’ll likely pick in the top 5. They will look to build the team from within, and not go after any expensive free agents this off-season.

  • Ian Mendes via twitter: Brian Elliot will start in net for the Senators. O’Brien and Carkner are in for Kovalev and Lee.

Around the Boards: Ilya’s Agent meeting with Waddell tomorrow, Redden Unhappy with Benching, Schenn returns, No suspension for Ruutu

  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Thrashers GM Don Waddell is denying reports that contract negotiations with Ilya Kovalchuk are at an impasse are “certainly false”. Kovalchuk’s agent and Waddell will be having a meeting on Saturday. A Russian paper is reporting that the Thrashers rejected a 10 year, $11.5 per season deal, and the might be talking trade with Vancouver and Los Angeles. I’m not sure how much you can believe of the Russian report as the max Ilya can receive is $11.3 million.
  • Michael Obernauer of the NY Daily News: Obernauer is reporting that Wade Redden is unhappy with being a healthy scratch last night. Gee Wade, I bet management, coaches and most players are unhappy that you are getting paid an average of $6.5 million a year, and will be for another 4 years.
  • Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star: Luke Schenn will make his way from the press box into the Maple Leafs lineup tonight, with Jeff Finger the mostly scratch. Victor Stalberg was recalled from the AHL Marlies, and Jonas Gustavsson will back up Vesa Toskala.
  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: The Sens Jarkko Ruutu won’t be suspended for his hit to the head on the Sabres Patrick Kaleta. I think I heard a faint clap around the league when people saw Kaleta on the receiving end of a ‘Kaleta type hit’. You’ll hear a faint clap around the league when someone smokes Ruutu.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Brennan reports Jesse Winchester will be moving in to the #1 center spot between  Daniel Alfredsson and Milan Michalek …. Yikes
