    Derick Brassard on trade rumors:

“It kind of plays in your head all the time if your name is out there,” Brassard said. “But it’s something you can’t control. If you don’t (block it out), you’re waiting for it, and if it doesn’t happen, you’re disappointed.”

Umberger added trades are harder for older players as they don’t want to uproot their families.

  • David Staples via twitter: Staples thinks that if the Oilers make a trade, they should trade for 2014 or 2015 option to swap 1st round picks with a fading team.

Twitter notes involving the Maple Leafs and Gagner, Sabres, Jets, Rangers, Wild, Kings and Panthers

  • Damien Cox via twitter: Persistant chatter that the Maple Leafs are interested in Sam Gagner of the Oilers. A defenseman would head to Edmonton.
  • Luke DeCock via twitter: DeCock wonders that if Gagner his available, would he fit in Carolina, and what would it cost them?

  • Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Answering my question on whether Jonathan Bernier will start somewhere this year, he gave a multiple choice answer: 1) next season 2) traded at deadline 3) Quick has unforeseen slump. He sees Quick starting 56 games and Bernier 36 games.

Coyotes staying, Thrashers moving to Winnipeg? Carter close to returning … Gillis fined … Kings Murray wants Handzus and Ponikarovsky back

  • Darren Dreger via twitter: “Ongoing negotiations to keep the NHL in Glendale. Atlanta is quickly becoming a real option for Wpg next season.” Will DePaoli via twitter: If the ‘Thrashers’ go to the Western Conference, there is chatter that the NHL wants to move the Red Wings to the Eastern Conference.
  • Paul Turenne of the Winnipeg Sun: Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz said today that he doesn’t believe that the Phoenix Coyotes are heading to Winnipeg, and that they should start looking at another franchises. “Katz said his belief is based on his knowledge of contractual obligations the team holds in Arizona, which if broken, could result in legal action.”
  • TSN.ca: Sources are saying that Atlanta is waiting for the fate of Coyotes to be determined. If the Coyotes are going to stay in Phoenix, there is a chance that the Thrashers will start talking with True North (group interested in purchasing Coyotes) and move them to Winnipeg. The source added that when it comes to relocation, there isn’t anywhere to go. If the deal with the NHL/Glendale/Hulsizer falls through, they’ll look at moving the Coyotes to Winnipeg and work at keeping the Thrashers in Atlanta. They hope to have the Phoenix situation resolved by the end of next week.
  • Helene Elliott via twitter: Kings Terry Murray says that he wants UFA’s Michal Handzus and Alexei Ponikarovsky to return next year. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Dennis isn’t buying this. Handzus and Ponikarovsky would only return at fractional money. Likely at center next year are Kopitar, Schenn, Stoll, Lewis.
  • Darren Dreger via twitter: Canucks GM Mike Gillis was fined an undisclosed, significant amount of money for his comments regarding officiating before Game 7.
  • Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Sabres forward Jason Pominville suffered a leg gash in Game 5 that sliced a tendon, he’ll be sidelined 4-6 months. Tim Connolly’s undisclosed injury would have kept him out  at least 6 weeks.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Lou Lamoriello says that he wants to keep defenseman Andy Greene. If Greene were to receive the right offer he’d forgo free agency and re-sign with the club. “This is the choice. This is where I want to be,” Greene told The Star-Ledger today. “If there is an offer there that is good and I felt was right, I’d definitely take it. I’m not dragging my feet waiting for July 1st. We’ll let it play out.” Greene has spoken to Lamorielle but no offer has been made yet.
  • Jack Todd of Faceoff.com: Todd thinks that Hal Gill is such a calming factor for PK Subban, they have to bring him back on another 1 year contract.

Columbus wouldn’t mind moving to East … Could Malkin return this year? Derek Roy could be back for Game 7

  • Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Columbus Blue Jackets have brought up the idea of moving to the Eastern Conference. It’s not likely to happen anytime soon, if at all. A team from the East would have to move to West, likely due to relocation. Phoenix moving to Winnipeg wouldn’t change anything, nor would a team team relocating to Quebec City. The Board of Governors would also have to be convinced. It’s been rumored that the Red Wings could be the first team to switch Conferences if the option becomes available.
  • Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins center Evgeni Malkin and coach Dan Bylsma haven’t ruled out his return during the playoffs. Malkin is at about 9 weeks into his 4-6 month rehab.

“He’s doing well, he’s working hard, but getting on the ice for him right now is really more to get his skates on, test the ice,” Bylsma said. “It’s not really part of rehab or part of him getting back into game shape. It’s part of his rehab, so it’s good for him to be getting on the ice. Again, that’s nine weeks into a long haul for Geno. He’s been working hard. He’s been working diligent. Getting on the ice is probably more for his mindset than it is to get him ready for a practice situation or anything to that accord.”

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers still haven’t named a starting goalie for this afternoon’s game (3 pm). Chris Pronger took some shots at yesterday’s practice and is a game time decision.
  • Brian Hamilton and Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: The Blackhawks hope to have Brent Seabrook back in the lineup today. He didn’t skate with the top 6 defenseman at practice yesterday and will likely need to pass a ‘fitness test’ before he’s given clearance to play.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Sabres have recalled Matt Ellis to replace the injured Jason Pominville. Brad Boyes was shifted to center. Derek Roy is very close to returning and he could return for a Game 7.  “Derek is very close, very close,” Ruff said. “I would put him in a category of within days. Jochen Hecht is a matter of days, too. Help is on its way.”
  • Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove: Glen Healy mentions that if the Coyotes were to relocate to Winnipeg, they’d ask Shane Doan if he’d want to come. If he doesn’t, they’d look to trade him, to a team “like LA.”
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons can’t see the Bruins or any other team that excited about signing Tomas Kaberle, “If he ever was a prominent player, he isn’t one anymore.” Ilya Bryzgalov isn’t first person who doesn’t want to play in Winnipeg, Zybnek Michalek choose Pittsburgh with one of the reason’s being he didn’t want to move to Winnipeg if the team relocated.
  • Sarah McLellan of hte Arizona Republic: Ilya Bryzgalov’s best bet may be to re-sign with the Coyotes. His playoffs likely cost him some money. “A $1-1.5 million raise from his $4.5 million salary this season is fair and puts him right under the $6 million range enjoyed by the game’s most successful goalies.” Getting Keith Yandle’s contract settle soon would be the best for the organization. Yandle could receive an offer sheet this summer. He’ll be getting a big raise from the $1.3 million he made this season.

NHL trade rumors involving the Los Angeles Kings

So yesterday Dennis Bernstein of The Fourth Period, went on a twitter tear, answering Los Angeles Kings trade questions all day and night. Some of the questions may have come from trade rumors, others were of the speculating type. Since I couldn’t convince Dennis to write up a nice summary for us to read, I’ve decided to attempt to breakdown his twitter account.  Now I normally give you links to each ‘tweet’, but that would take up more time, so if you want direct links, you can get them from his account  here (and is a good ‘follow’). I’ll also adjust the order posted and will try to lump specific player questions/mentions together, and combine the question and answer hopefully into one sentence. The Kings are looking for scoring help and a top 4 defenseman, so let’s begin …..

  • If the Kings fall out of contention in February, look for them to move from buyers to sellers. They have a 10 game road trip that may determine their course of action.
  • See’s a trade first before they make a change behind the bench.
  • The Kings have plenty of of 20 goal guys, need a 35+ guy.
  • Doesn’t see the Kings looking to deal goalie Jonathan Bernier. He wouldn’t bring back the forward the Kings need.
  • The Kings could use a 2nd line center, but trading for a long term guy would create a log jam for Brayden Schenn next year, Stoll would replace Handzus as 3rd line center.
  • See’s Wayne Simmonds as a solid 3rd line for years to come.
  • Thomas Hickey doesn’t have much trade value, has a shoulder injury, could be wasted 4th overall pick.
  • Kings looking at Francois Beauchemin and Robyn Regehr on defense, Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner on the wing.

Ottawa Senators

  • Jimmy Murphy reported that Kings GM Lombardi was scouting the Senators-Bruins game.
  • Here goes the Mike Fisher chatter.
  • Fisher could be a target. Jason Spezza is still out for another month so he may be too late, need immediate boost.
  • Fisher would fit as a #2 center but is not putting up good numbers and has a $4 million cap hit.
  • Milan Michalek is a $4.3 million cap hit with 8 goals in 43 games, so not a likely target.

Calgary Flames

  • Robyn Regehr may be the best defenseman option.
  • Kicking tires on Alex Tanguay.
  • If the Kings were to go after Regehr and Niklas Hagman, the Flames would want a Dman prospect included, Teubert or Voynov. It would take a big deal to get both.
  • Simmonds would likely be in a deal for Regehr. Tanguay will be a UFA at end of year, has no-trade clause, so there wouldn’t be a high price.
  • Jarome Iginla for Brayden Schenn doesn’t make sense. 2 years at $7 million each, with Drew Doughty contract still to do, not Lombardi’s style.
  • The Kings would have less than zero interest in Olli Jokinen.

Edmonton Oilers

  • Simmonds has been dangled by the Kings for Ales Hemsky or Dustin Penner.
  • They are looking at Hemsky or Penner, but their February road trip could determine if they want to pay the price.
  • Shawn Horcoff not a great fit. He doesn’t put the puck in the net enough.

Toronto Maple Leafs

  • There was talk of a Kris Versteeg, Francois Beauchemin and high prospect for Brayden Schenn. Brian Burke really wants Schenn, but Lombardi won’t move him.
  • A Versteeg for Simmonds deal is not an upgrade.

Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers

  • Since Jason Pominville has a cap hit of $5.3 million, has a NMC and has only 8 goals, so likely not a target of the Kings.
  • David Booth and Tomas Vanek are possible but not likely.
  • Booth has a long term deal with a limited no-trade clause.

One offs

  • Andrei Kostitsyn likely not an option, Canadiens need goals too, so if he’s that good offensively, he’d stay. If they would move him, would want more than Simmonds.
  • If Capitals decided to move Semin, they’d want full rental value, a lot more than Jarret Stoll. Ovechkin won’t allow the Capitals to trade him anyways.
  • Niclas Bergfors is a right winger and has been a healthy scratch in December, so likely not interested.
  • Kings never targeted Patrick Elias, 2 years left at $6 million.
  • Martin Havlat’s salary doesn’t make sense.
  • Tomas Kopecky to the Kings is as likely as Semin to Chicago for him.
  • Scouts at Monday’s game were from the Lightning, Flyers, Canadiens, Boston, and Penguins.

Leafs and Devils talking? Spezza back tomorrow? Howard out this weekend … Would Avs make a pitch for Thomas?

  • Mike Brophy of SportsNet: Brad Richards will arguably be the top UFA this summer if he doesn’t come to deal with the Dallas Stars beforehand. With the Stars awaiting new ownership from somewhere, it’s unlikely anything would get done until there is someone in place. Brophy has heard that the Devils and Maple Leafs have talked a little. The Devils could use a player like Tomas Kaberle, Leafs would like a top 6 player.
  • Ian Mendes via twitter: Senators goalie Pascal Leclaire skated in full gear with the team for 20 minutes before leaving. Jason Spezza stayed on the ice with the team. Mendes added that Spezza confirms that he hopes to play tomorrow, if he thinks he can contribute, he’ll play.
  • Craig Custance via twitter: Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard (back spasms) won’t play Saturday and will be re-evaluted on Monday.
  • Jonas Siegel of AM640: Kris Versteeg is off to see a doctor about his back bad today, and may get an MRI done according to coach Ron Wilson. If he’s unable to go on Saturday, Luca Caputi will take his spot on the 2nd line again.
  • Ian Walker via twitter: Vancouver Canucks defenseman Andrew Alberts was back at practice today after tweaking his knee and having a couple days off.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Minnesota Wild coach Todd Richards said that Antti Miettinen has a concussion from the hit he received on Monday from Dustin Brown. Cam Barker who’s missed the last 3 games is ready to return to the lineup. Guillaume Latendresse is out tomorrow.
  • Adrian Dater via twitter: Dater wonders if Craig Anderson is out long term, would the Avalanche make a pitch for Bruins goalie Tim Thomas and his $5 million salary?
  • TSN staff: TSN is reporting that Buffalo Sabres winger Jason Pominville failed his neuro-psych test. He’d been practicing all week, feeling no effects, and hoped to return tonight. He’s been sent back to Buffalo to meet with doctors.
  • Chris Kuc via twitter: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell will travel with the team but is doubtful to play.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Ray Emery will put on the pads next week for the first time since his hip surgery that should have, still could, end his hockey career. “Usually when you have this type of thing done, they just want you to walk again,” Emery told ESPN.com. “The doctor was understanding of what I wanted,” Emery said. “I told him that I could care less if I can’t walk in five years, but I want just want to play hockey for five years.”
  • James Murphy of ESPN Boston: Retirement may “come sooner than he may have liked or expected” for Bill Guerin, though he hasn’t made a final decision yet.
  • Fan590 Audio: Francois Beauchemin talking about the Leafs, last night’s game, and why he signed with the Leafs.

Injury notes on Sheldon Souray, Craig Anderson, Dan Sexton and Jordan Staal

Updated 10:15 am

8:04 am:

  • Pierre LeBrun via Twitter: Sheldon Souray tells LeBrun there’s a small break in his hand, and will be out 10-14 days. (See video of the fight in a post from yesterday)
  • Colorado Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson hurts his knee during warm-ups last night. He’ll be evaluated this morning by team doctors, after flying back to Denver. It looks like it could be serious. Dater notes there are worries about torn ACL.
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Although Jordan Staal has been looking good in practice, he’s still a ways away, he’ll miss his 10th straight game tonight. “He looks good, but there’s still a ways to go before he gets close to that 100-percent number,” coach Dan Bylsma.

Doughty to IR … Bruins-Maple Leafs rumors … Canadiens interested in Bieksa? Sabres to get 3 back by weekend?

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The Los Angeles Kings have placed defenseman Drew Doughty on the IR retroactive to October 21st, and have recalled Jake Muzzin from the AHL. The Kings won’t be rushing Doughty back. It looks like the Kings will be keeping Brayden Schenn and Kyle Clifford on the roster this year, both could be returned to Junior, but not to the AHL. “My plan is to have them contribute as we get into February and March,” Murray said.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Pierre-Marc Bouchard is getting closer to returning to game action as he’s taking contact now during practice. Bouchard has been recovering from post-concussion syndrome, having played only 1 game since March 2009. He could be sent to the AHL on a conditioning stint before returning to the NHL. Bouchard’s big test will be when he takes a big hit,  “Why wait?” “They should throw him a suicide pass at center ice and I’ll see if he’s ready,” Clutterbuck [teammate] joked.
  • Darren Dreger of TSN (video link): It’s a little to early for Brad Richards rumors, but after Christmas things could heat up. The Rangers and Dallas did talk about the possibility last season. The Canadiens are reportedly interested in adding some depth on the blueline, maybe Kevin Bieksa once the Canucks injured players are all ready to return.
  • Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Jason Pominville (concussion) and defensemen Craig Rivet (shoulder) and Shaone Morrisonn (groin) could return to the Buffalo Sabres lineup this weekend. Pominville had a neurological-psychological exam yesterday and is awaiting clearance for contact.
  • Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail: In July, Shane Doan and his brother Brook shot an episode of ‘Mantracker’ back in July. They spent a week in the mountains by Whistler BC, with the point of show being not to be caught by the ‘mantracker’ over a 36 hour period.
  • Doug MacLean of Sportsnet: Maple Leafs, Bruins and Coyotes

Senators notes … Pominville to have baseline test next week … Burrows to practice next week

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators were without Jason Spezza last night, he’s listed as day-to-day with a groin injury. He is questionable for tonight’s game against the Canadiens. He originally hurt his groin before training camp. Defenseman Brian Lee played forward last night for the Sens. Senators GM Bryan Murray has had “quite a few calls” from GMs since he mentioned on Wednesday that he’s looking for a tough defenseman, though most are offering expensive players. There were 12 scouts from 12 teams watching last nights game versus the Sabres. Daniel Alfredsson recorded his 1,000 point last night on an empty net goal. Jason Pominville is skating the Sabres but no timetable for his return as been set. He’s not taking contact, and has a baseline test scheduled for next week. Great quote for Garrioch “It looked like the enigmatic Alex Kovalev actually felt like playing Friday. He made a hit and took a shot on the same shift. Can he do it two nights in a row? Doubtful.”
  • TSN Ice Chips: Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows is expected to practice with the team next week. Dan Hamhuis hopes to be able to play on Tuesday, his foot is not broken. LA Kings defenseman Matt Greene has been cleared for hockey activities. Cam Janssen passed his baseline test and hopes to return next Thursday.

Pavelec takes to the ice … Could the Kings be interested in Richards or Iginla if they become available? Pominville takes 1st step to returning

  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution: Atlanta Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec returned to practice yesterday for the first time since his collapse the other week. After many tests, it was determined he had a neurocardiogenic syncope episode, or in English, a fainting spell. When he banged his head off the ice, it gave him a concussion. What caused him to faint is still unknown. “They said there are so many reasons it could have happened, but they couldn’t find it. A lot of times it will never happen again. Hopefully, it never happens again.” No timetable is set for his return to game action, it will depend on how quickly he can get into game shape. Pavelec said it was the 4th concussion he’s suffered, 2 from soccer, 2 from hockey.
  • Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Matt Green will likely return to the LA Kings lineup later this week. The Kings also have available salary cap room to add a big name player if they chose. If the Dallas Stars consider trading Brad Richards, the Kings could be interested. If Calgary wants to rebuild and Jarome Iginla becomes available, he could be an excellent fit in LA.
  • Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston: Marc Savard skated for the 3rd time yesterday. “I’m obviously feeling better because I’m out skating,” Savard told ESPNBoston.com on Tuesday after his skate. “That’s good news, but I’m still definitely not 100 percent. I still have some issues, but a lot of them aren’t from the injury. My head isn’t screwed up after I work out right now. Obviously, there are other on-going issues.”
  • Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton Oilers coach Tom Renney is trying out some new line combinations. Ales Hemsky – Shawn Horcoff – Magnus Paajarvi,  Dustin Penner – Sam Gagner – Jordan Eberle, and Taylor Hall – Andrew Cogliano – Gilbert Brule.
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: The Vancouver Canucks played last night without 2 of their key off-season acquisitions, Dan Hamhuis and Keith Ballard. Ballard missed his 2nd consecutive game after suffering a concussion on Friday, he didn’t make the trip with the team and won’t play tonight. X-rays were negative on Keith Ballard’s foot after blocking a shot on Sunday.
  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres winger Jason Pominville said he never saw Niklas Hjalmarsson coming on the hit that gave him a concussion. Pominville took part in an off-ice, light workout yesterday for the first time since the injury. If he has no symptoms today, he’ll increase the workload slightly.
  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Matt Walker has yet to play a game for them since being acquired for Simon Gagne, and will be out 10-12 weeks after undergoing surgery on a bony impingement and a torn labrum in his right hip.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitiution: Thrashers defenseman Tobias Enstrom is already the teams leading scorer for a defenseman, and will become the clubs new ironman, playing in his 252nd consecutive game tonight. He hasn’t missed a game since joining the club in 2007-08.

Hjalmarrson and Wisniewski will be under review by NHL

Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarrson will likely face a suspension by the NHL for his hit on Sabres forward Jason Pominville. Hjalmarrson has no previous offenses. Pominville was taken off the ice on a stretcher, but later was walking around the Sabres dressing room. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville, “To me you can argue that it was even a penalty. I know that you don’t want to see anybody go down and get hurt like that, but (Hjalmarsson) wasn’t even looking at the guy. He was playing the puck and just hit him. There was no intent at all on the head.”

At about the 1:38 mark Pominville glances over his shoulder and looks like he sees Hjalmarrson coming.

Larry Brooks of the NY Post: New York Islanders defenseman James Wisniewski made an obscene gesture towards New York Rangers forward Sean Avery last night, and will be reviewed by the NHL. Gary Bettman was at the game but didn’t see the gesture, but he did say that Colin Campbell will review it. Sean Avery had this to say following the game,

“I mean, it’s pretty obvious what the guy was doing,” Avery said after the defeat that dropped the Rangers to 1-1. “But I’m sure nothing is going to happen to him because nothing ever happens.

“It’s interesting you get a warning [from the officials] for something like that. Imagine if I did that. I’d be sent to rehab.”
