Carter injured … Pronger and Seabrook could be back for Game 5 … Video of Richards elbow on Kaleta

- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers 1-0 loss to the Sabres last night could turn out to be pretty costly. Mike Richards had a 5-minute major for elbowing Patrick Kaleta, and it could be under review by the league. Jeff Carter left with 2 minutes left in the 1st period with what looked like an knee injury after colliding with Tyler Myers. GM Paul Holmgren said Carter is day-to-day. The loss may also signal the return of Chris Pronger who’s been out for the last 5 weeks.
- Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune: Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook traveled with the team and could be in the lineup for Game 5. John Scott could be out of the lineup if Seabrook is back in. Tomas Kopecky has been out with an upper-body injury, is still out.
- Bill Beacon of the Globe and Mail: Canadiens forward Jeff Halpern practiced yesterday and it looks like he could be ready to go tonight. He’s been out with an undisclosed injury.
- Damian Cox of the Toronto Star: The Blackhawks won’t have to dismantle again this off-season. They have $51 million committed for next year, and the salary cap is expected to rise to around $62 million next season. Cory Crawford is basically on the only major contract they have to deal with. They could look to add a veteran center, some size and maybe a new backup goalie.
- Richards elbow on Kaleta. I don’t see him getting suspended.

- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom is still day-to-day with a fractured thumb. He was on the ice taking shots yesterday, testing it out, no timetable is set. Semyon Varlamov, out with knee issues, is ready to start taking part in full practices, but won’t be ready to start for at least a week.
- Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank: Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro could travel with the team this week, and possibly get some starts in the next 2 weeks.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Injured Avalanche forward Tomas Fleischmann is a UFA at seasons end, and they’d proably like to keep him, though he may test the market. Many Avs fans may be hoping for a Tomas Vokoun free agent signing, but Dater would prefer Ilya Bryzgalov. (Complete list of UFA’s)
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: Denis Grebeshkov is playing in the KHL this year, but would the Oilers be interested in bringing him back? They have the cap room next season and could use a defenseman. It’s possible that Telus could be bidder in sale of the Maple Leafs.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens forwards Jeff Halpren and Tomas Plekanec left last night’s game with lower body injuries.
- Vancouver Canucks via twitter: Cory Schneider will start in net tonight for the Canucks.

- Montreal Canadiens website: The Montreal Canadiens have signed Jeff Halpren to a 1-year contract. Halpren played in 71 games last year with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Los Angeles Kings, recording 9 goals and 10 assists.
- Dave Vest of PhoenixCoyotes.com: Kyle Wellwood has been invited to the Phoenix Coyotes training camp on a tryout basis. GM Don Maloney continues talks with RFA Martin Hanzal, and that they are closer to a deal than they were 2 weeks ago.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein doesn’t think the Kings will make another move until camp plays out. Was asked if Ryan Malone is a still a possibility.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: No date is set for player reps to vote on the hiring of Donald Fehr according to Bruins rep Mark Stuart.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Zdeno Chara said there is nothing new to report on his possible contract extension, felt the Kovalchuk stalled negotiations. Joe Haggerty via twitter also noted that Chara said the NHL and NHLPA negotiations put a pause on his negotiations.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: According to Brian Rolston’s agent, the Devils have asked Rolston to waive his no-trade clause, haven’t brought it up.
- Howard Berger via twitter: Ron Wilson said that “Giguere is No. 1 going into training camp.”

- TSN: According to Carey Price’s agent, contract negotiations are progressing, but there is still a ways to go. He hopes that a deal is in place before training camp. It was reported earlier that Price is asking for $3 million, and that he is ready to go on “strike” if he doesn’t get it.
- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Bill Guerin sent a text message to the Sporting News saying that he was just in town (Philadelphia), and that while he skated with some Flyers, there’s nothing more to it at the moment. Guerin’s agent, Bob Murray, said that he just needed a place to skate and that they’ve had discussion with a couple teams. Teams may be looking to use cheaper, younger players before committing to veterans like Guerin and Owen Nolan. Nolan’s agent, JP Barry, said that Nolan would prefer to stay on the West Coast.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Guerin said that his skate with the Flyers has been planned for weeks. A source said last week that the Flyers and Guerin talked right after the Penguins said they weren’t interested, but the Flyers can’t currently get him under the cap. Seravalli thinks they could fit him in if he signed for the league minimum or sent one of Darroll Powe , Dan Carcillo, Matt Walker or Oskars Bartulis to the AHL.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: It’s a tough time for some of the remaining free agents looking for a contract; Patrick O’Sullivan, Ryan Potulny, Mike Comrie, Brendan Morrison, Marek Svatos, Ruslan Fedotenko, Jeff Halpern, Miro Satan, Bill Guerin and Owen Nolan are still looking for a deal. O’Sullivan has it a bit better than the others as he’ll be paid $450,000 for the next two seasons from his buyout. He’s only 25, and has put up 149 points in 280 games, and should get an offer of at least $500,000.

Kariya out next season … Could Guerin end up in LA? Oilers nixed a Souray-Hartnell deal last year?

- Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy: Paul Kariya’s agent, Don Baizley, issued a statement saying that Paul Kariya will sit out the 2010-11 season with post-concussion syndrome. Kariya has a history of concussion problems, and missed 6 games last season with a concussion. There was no mention of him retiring.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: It wouldn’t be a surprise if Bill Guerin signed with the Los Angeles Kings. Kings GM Dean Lombardi and Guerin have a western Massachusetts connection.
- JP Hoornstra of the LA Daily News: Joffery Lupul’s mysterious blood ailment will keep him off skates until he’s re-evaluated on September 20th. He’s still confident that he’ll be ready for the season opener.
- David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: Edmonton TV sportscaster, Kevin Karius said the Edmonton Oilers came close to to sending Sheldon Souray to the Philadelphia Flyers for Scott Hartnell last season. Journal reporter Jim Matheson also confirmed that it almost happened as well.
“Steve Tambellini offered Sheldon Souray to the Flyers for Scott Hartnell. And Hartnell has a no-trade clause and Paul Holmgren went to Hartnell and said, ‘Listen, the Oilers are interested in you. Would you waive your no trade?’ And Hartnell said, ‘You know, I’d like to, I wouldn’t mind going to Edmonton and playing.’
“He’s a Lloydminster guy. He’s an Alberta guy. He likes it here. I think it would have been a kind of a homecoming for him. A power forward, kind of what the Oilers need. So he said, ‘Go ahead.’ So Paul Holmgren phoned Tamby back and said, ‘Here is the deal. It’s done if you want it,’ and Tamby pulled out.
- Greg Wyshynski of Puddy Daddy talked to a source close to Hartnell that said Hartnell has never waived his no-movement clause, or been asked to waive it.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Brendan Morrison, Jeff Halpren and Mike Comrie are just a couple UFA’s that don’t have any contract offers, and might have to take a training camp invite if they don’t get any offers between now and the start of training camp. The Penguins are looking at forwards who they could invite to camp. Patrick O’Sullivan is getting interest from several clubs who are interested in bringing him in on tryout basis. O’Sullivan is considered a bit of risk (and worth the risk in my opinion, there’s no doubting the kid is talented). Scouts say his fundamentals are flawed and there are concerns about his desire to play in the NHL. Indications are that the Penguins don’t have an interest, but O’Sullivan’s side has contacted the Penguins.
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Nikolai Khabibulin may be suspended by the NHL for his drunk driving charges, to go along with his possible jail time.

- Andy Strickland via twitter: The idea the the St. Louis Blues were going to trade David Backes was laughable.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: The Blues had said for weeks that Kaberle never made sense since he could walk away at the end of the year.
- Steve Simmons via twitter: Kaberle was willing to sign a long term contract if he was traded to a city he liked, but no one asked.

- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Some agents are saying that many of the established veterans may not be signing anywhere until mid-to-late September. Teams are looking for younger, cheaper 3rd-4th liners. They don’t have any cap space, but the Bruins are looking at veteran free agent wingers. They’re keeping in touch with Bill Guerin and Miro Satan. Raffi Torres has drawn minimal interest and may have to settle for a 1 year deal around $800,000 to low $1 million. Willie Mitchell in talks with 5 teams; Kings, Sharks, Lightning, Capitals and Canucks. The Anaheim Ducks are looking for a defenseman before turning their attention to Paul Kariya. Ruslan Fedotenko has received an invite to Islanders training camp, the Wild may also be interested. Slava Kozlov wants to go to a contender but not getting a lot of interest, KHL is option but not being pursued at the moment. A couple of teams have called about Jeff Halpren, but he’s yet to receive an offer.
- Katie Strang of Newsday: The Islanders are not interested in Antti Niemi, disputing some reports.
- EJ Hradek via twitter: Thinks the only logical spot for Niemi is San Joseba possibly the Capitals if they are not sold on their two young goalies.
Kings getting ready to pursue Kovalchuk … Wild interested in Cullen?

- Mark Everson of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils have about $13 million in cap space, and they are still trying to re-sign Ilya Kovalchuk and Paul Martin. Both would require about all of that, and they still have other roster spots to fill, 3 forwards and 3 defense. Odds are they won’t sign both (possibly neither), and will use that extra money on bolstering their defense. John Madden may be on his way back to New Jersey. Clarkson re-signed with the Devils, 3 year, $8 million.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The LA Kings are getting ready to pursue Ilya Kovalchuk, and hoping it won’t cost too much. The Kings aren’t expected to bring Jeff Halpern, Fredrik Modin and Taitis Ivanans back. The Anaheim Ducks are still waiting to hear what Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu are going to do next year. Ducks may look at signing a mid-level defenseman.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Sergei Gonchar and Bill Guerin are certain to test the market. The Pens were still trying to get Dan Hamhuis locked up before noon EST. Jordan Leopold and Mark Eaton are still possibilities to return the club.
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: The Minnesota Wild are in the market for a center, and homegrown Matt Cullen could be an option.
Changes Coming in LA and Buffalo … Devils Coaching Options

- Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times: The LA Kings have 9 free agents to deal with this off-seaosn, 6 UFAs and 3 RFAs, and there is a chance at all 6 UFAs won’t be back. Alexander Frolov could be looking for $5 million a year, not likely getting that in LA, or maybe from anyone else in the NHL. Freddie Modin wasn’t very productive since being acquired at the deadline. Jeff Halpren didn’t have much success either. Poor defensive play since December injury, and coming off a $3 million contract may have paved the wayRandy Jones to move on. The game may be getting too quick for Sean O’Donnell. Raitis Ivanans may not be worth the roster spot anymore. Their 3 restricted free agents, Brad Richardson, Scott Parse, and Rich Clune, all made under $600,000 and wouldn’t be getting big raises, so they might be back.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Jason Spezza’s no movement clause starts on July 1st, and fans are starting to hope that he’s traded. But fans may not get their wish as both he, and the Sens would like to have him wearing a Senators uniform next season.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC.ca: Anton Volchenkov’s starting point will be Mike Komisarek’s 5 year, $22.5 million, and someone will give that or more. Friedman thinks Halak won’t re-sign in Montreal unless it’s for a boat load of cash. Wherever Carey Price ends up next year, he needs a veteran goalie to mentor him. Doug Risebrough is in the running for the Lightning GM job, and could be a candidate for San Jose if the organization goes in a different direction. The Lightning’s new GM will decide the fate of Vinny Lecavalier, new owner Jeffrey Vinik might be open to keeping him.
- Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News: Changes could be coming with the Buffalo Sabres, GM Darcy Regier and coach Lindy Ruff could be on the hotseat. Tim Connolly, Jason Pominville, Derek Roy underacheived. Trade deadline acquisition Raffi Torres was a scratch for their elimination game. The team in general is on the small side, without the physical side that you need in the playoffs.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils will be searching for a new coach at Lemaire retired after one year. Brooks thinks the Devils should look inhouse and promote their AHL coach and long time Devil, John MacLean. Other candidates could be Ken Hitchcock, Bob Hartley, and Mike Keenan.
