- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: After sending Rostislav Olesz ($3 million) to the minors, the Blackhawks now have between $6-$7 million free.
“We’re not in a rush to spend money,” Bowman said before the Hawks played the Calgary Flames. “It’s a bit of an oddity for us. In the last couple of years, we’ve been so tight against [the salary cap].”
“We don’t have anything that we’re close to doing or looking at,” said Bowman, who’ll stick with a 23-man roster. “We’re always looking ahead at what might be there, but we’ll see what happens.
“Right now, we’re not looking to do anything in particular. We’re happy with the players that we have, as well as the start that our top guys have gotten off to.”
Defenseman Brent Seabrook is doubtful for Saturday against the Oilers. Jahns via twitter: GM Stan Bowman said that he was never approached by the Sabres about trading Patrick Kane, despite the reports.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: With all the injuries the Maple Leafs have encountered of late, it won’t play a role in trade talks according to VP of hockey operations Dave Poulin, not yet anyway.
“If something made sense for our hockey team, we’d do it tomorrow regardless of what’s going on,” Poulin said in a phone interview. “But circumstances right now have no factor with that.
“You have to be patient.”

- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk on affect of new ownership on payroll and with possible trades:
“I think it’s more environment and comfort in the short-term. I like our roster and I think we need to let it be for a bit. I don’t foresee any immediate moves that are necessary. But, in the long term, having an owner and possibly a higher budget could open the door for opportunities that we’re not able to study right now. It also will probably change the way other teams look at us, and maybe they will be more open to picking up the phone and making a call.”
Nieuwendyk has had discussions with RFAs Jamie Benn and Alex Goligoski, as well as UFA Nicklas Grossman.
- Louie Korac of NHL.com: Blues forward David Perron has been cleared for contact. Perron hasn’t played since taking a Joe Thornton hit on Nov. 4th 2010. There is no timetable for his return.
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Colten Teubert and Taylor Chorney were recalled by the Oilers to replace Andy Sutton and Corey Potter, who were both scheduled to have MRIs. Ryan Whitney practiced yesterday but won’t return until next week at the earliest.
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: Brendan Morrison will likely be back in the lineup within the week. He tested his knee in the pre-game skate but was a scratch. David Moss could be put on the IR when Morrison is healthy.
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: Signs are pointing to Ondrej Pavelec starting in net for the Jets against the Flyers.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Jimmy Howard will start in net for the Red Wings against the Kings. Coach Babcock hasn’t decided on Sunday’s starter yet.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Curtis Sanford will start in net for the Blue Jackets.

- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Allen offers 10 early projections for the upcoming season. 1. Jeff Carter and Rick Nash will score more than 75 combined goals this season. 2. Predicts the Oilers will be an “elite Pittsburgh Penguins-style contender by 2013-14.” 3. If Shane Doan isn’t re-signed during the season, he’ll be hot name at the trade deadline. 4. Ales Hemsky will lead the league in trade rumors again. 5. The Rangers and Sabres have improved and should move up the standings. Some think the Capitals and Penguins will drop, Allen doesn’t. 6. Best bargain goaltending: Tomas Vokoun ($1.5 million), Jonathan Quick ($1.8 million) and Jimmy Howard ($2.25 million). 7. The Predators will acquire a top 6 scoring forward. Cory Stillman and Sergei Samsonov are free agents, or they could go the trade route with teams looking so shed some salary. 8. The Lightning will give up 20 to 25 less goals due to having Dwayne Roloson for the entire season. 9. Predators Blake Geoffrion will be in the rookie of the year race. 10. Sabres owner Terry Pegula will be the teams MVP this year.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Nassau County referendum vote for a new arena is today. If they don’t get a positive vote for a new arena, the team could be up for sale. Would NJ Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov want to buy the club and bring it to Brooklyn? The new arena being built in Brooklyn will be ready for the 2012-13 season, and could fill 44-60 dates.
- Peter Grathoff of the Kansas City Star: If votes go in the way of not building the new arena in Nassau County, it could one day increase the chances of moving them to Kansas City. The Islanders lease expires at the Nassau Coliseum in 2015.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Shea Weber’s arbitration hearing is tomorrow morning at 8 a.m., and both sides have filed their written briefs. After briefs are filed, it sometimes speeds up negotiations to get a deal done before the hearing.
- Kelly Friesen via twitter: Word is that the Blues would like Jaden Schwartz to play with the Tri-City Americans but he’d rather stay at Colorado College.

- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby has been cleared by doctors to begin practicing with teammates tomorrow morning. He will travel with the team to Florida. He’ll still need to get clearance from doctors before he’s able to get back in a game.
- John Giannone via twitter: Jonas Enroth in net for the Sabres as Ryan Miller has an upper-body injury. Took an heavy Dion Phaneuf slap shot last night.

- Anaheim Ducks via twitter: “Teemu Selanne told media [yesterday] that he’d like to decide on whether to play next season around July 1.”
- Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago: Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford will be a RFA, and they will be waiting until after the season to discuss contract extension. “[General manager] Stan Bowman phoned me and we talked and I told him we are going to wait until the end of the season,” Gilles Lupien said in an interview. Crawford is 29-15 with a 2.27 GAA and 4 shutouts.
- Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp could skate this weekend, he’s missed the last 4 games with a knee injury. They’d like to get him into a game before the end of the season. David Bolland has missed 8 consecutive game with a concussion, no update on his progress.
- Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: After being given a vote of confidence, Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson, he’ll have plenty of cap space next year after they deal with their 4 RFA’s and 8 UFA’s. They could look at bringing in a quality defenseman and center. They could pull off a draft day trade.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: If given the option to pick 1 free agent to go after, Portzline thinks the Blue Jackets should go after Ilya Bryzgalov. He’d likely cost $6 million a year, it’s not likely they they go after him though. Portzline would also be shocked if they don’t trade their 1st round pick this year. They only have 2 defenseman under contract for next year.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater thinks the Avalanche will explore the FA goalie market this off-season, and thinks they should look at Bryzgalov and Tomas Vokoun if they are available. He also brings up the idea of trading their 1st round pick (Top 5) for a goalie like Cory Schneider (Van) or Steve Bernier (LA). The Avs could look at moving one of their centers as they are deep down the middle. Paul Stastny could be an option, and has a $6.6 million cap hit. Dater put the odds at more than 50-50 that they re-sign Brian Elliott. Dater on possibly trading the Avs 1st round pick (could be top 3): Raises the question of sending the 1st for Schneider or Bernier. What about for Roberto Luongo or even Jonathan Quick? The Avs could still get the Blues 1st round pick from this year if the Blues finish 11th or better. Free agents like Bryzgalov and Vokoun may not want to sign with another young team.
- Dan Rosen of NHL.com: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said that Jimmy Howard could be back in uniform tonight, and if not, he should be ready for Saturday.

- Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: Jimmy Howard’s MRI results from yesterday showed only a sprain and no structural damage. Howard seemed hopeful for Wednesday, but “He’s going to take a little break and we don’t know when he’ll be back,” Babcock said. “The bottom line, like with any player that has an injury, he’s got to get back, get healthy and get playing. Ideally, it won’t be too long.” Joey MacDonald will start tonight, Thomas McCollum was recalled.
- Tracey Myers via twitter: Johan Franzen is back in the lineup for the Red Wings. Pavel Datsyuk is still out.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Zach Parise practiced on a line with Travis Zajac today. New Jersey Devils via twitter: Parise’s status for Wednesday’s game will likely be determined after tomorrow’s practice.

- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: James Wisniewski is hoping the Canadiens will be interested in signing him after the season. The 26-year old will be a UFA at seasons end, and the Canadiens currently only have 3 defenseman under contract. He was told on the Island that he was expendable as they were going with a youth movement (from the sentence above, he’s only 26).
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres winger Drew Stafford will miss at least the next 2 games with a groin injury. “It is a relief,” Ruff said after practice in HSBC Arena. “He’s walking fine, and his strength is pretty good. It all bodes well for coming back quickly.”
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Robin Lehner could be recalled by the Ottawa Senators from the AHL, and get the start against the Flyers or on Friday against the Canadiens. Warren also reports reports the Senators had over $27 million in salary has absent from practice with various injuries. Daniel Alfredsson, Sergei Gonchar and Brian Elliott are ailing but expected to play. Jason Spezza is ahead of schedule as he recovers from his Dec. 26th shoulder separation, and could be back in 2 weeks. Alex Kovalev could return early next week.
- Andrew Gross via twitter: Ruslan Fedotenko will out of the Rangers lineup for 2-4 weeks with a left shoulder separation.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Jimmy Howard was back with the Red Wings after only missing 2 games. Howard took a hard shot near his knee cap, and was inches away from possibly being a lot more serious.

- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersberg Times: Goalless in 6 games, and there are indications that Steven Stamkos is injured.
But then Boucher indicated Stamkos has been playing hurt.
“We never said it but he was injured,” Boucher said.
Well, that sparked all kinds of other questions.
What is the injury?
“Some parts of the body injury,” Boucher said. “It’s a lot better but it was really annoying for a while.”
Did the injury coincide with his scoring drought?
“Almost.”
Stamkos added
“nothing major, nothing that’s going to keep me from playing a game. Honestly, it’s the bumps and bruises I go through every year.”
He also said he has been fighting “a little bit of the flu, lately.”
- Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets are in a 6-14-3 slide (heading into last night’s game) and need to make a trade to shake things up. They could use a centerman and a defenseman. Some of their veterans brought in to instill a winning attitude haven’t really lived up to the plan. Arace wonders if they’d overrated some of their younger players. They could trade Jake Voracek or Derick Brassard for a defenseman, and change the makeup of the team. Maybe trade a couple draft picks for one, like the Canadiens did in getting James Wisniewski, and where was Howson on that one? They could also move Sammy Pahlsson, Chris Clark, Fedor Tyutin, Jan Hejda and Mathieu Garon to a contender.
- George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Jimmy Howard injured his knee in the first period last night. He was helped off the ice with about 7 minutes to go with a bruised knee. The Red Wings have also lost Tomas Holmstrom for likely 4 weeks with a fractured right hand. “Battling around the net,” he said. “Felt something. “Got to the bench and I felt like I can’t hold on to the stick anymore.” The Wings are already without Mike Modano, Pavel Datsyuk, Dan Cleary, Chris Osgood and Brad Stuart.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart had surgery on this broken jaw and will be out 6-8 weeks.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Cal O’Reilly crashed heavily into the boards (video below), was taken to hospital, but was later released. He was able to join the team on their charter home, the injury he sustained is not known yet.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars will likely look for a puck moving defenseman, “but it would have to be the perfect deal.but it would have to be the perfect deal.” If a new owner is not found by the trade deadline day, it would have to be a ‘cash for cash’ deal as there is no extra money.
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Flames GM Jay Feaster has been working the phones, “If for nothing else, I want to know what it is the teams are looking to do. Are there things that may make some sense for us? “You always want to make sure you’re gathering that information.” Feaster has 11 players with no-trade clauses and 11 with a cap of more than $3 million.
“Some guys will be honest with you up front and say, forget dollar for dollar, I have to win the battle of the dollars. I want to send more out than I’m taking back.
“That’s the tough thing. Guys want to match up term, too. It’s difficult when you have contracts with term and big dollars.
“I had to laugh, I had one guy say to me it has to be a fair deal skill for skill, but it has to be even money, too.”

I just have to see how I am (Thursday) in practice and Friday in the pregame skate.” Tim Sassone via twitter: David Bolland is likely in the lineup for the Blackhawks tonight. Fernando Pisani won’t be in the lineup.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Rolston cleared waivers and will be in the lineup for the NJ Devils tonight. Tom Gulitti via twitter: Brian Rolston said he’s never been asked to waive his no-trade clause. He was asked if he would waive it, responded, “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it”. Rolston expects to be in the lineup tonight.

The Senators want to add a top 6 forward and a rugged dman. Teams are looking young players in return for older, expensive underachievers, which is why it’s unlikely he’ll get something done (I’m thinking Murray will join this train of thought if he looks to deal Alexei Kovalev).
“We talk about trades and we talk to other managers, but that’s very difficult,” said Murray. “As I talk to different teams, even teams that want to make something happen, I have a tough time. Getting equal value at equal money is difficult.”

- Craig Custance of the Sporting News: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman confirms that he spoke with Evgeni Nabokov’s agent but wouldn’t say anything more. He did say that their goaltending needs to improve and he’s not ruling out that improvement comes from Dan Ellis and Mike Smith. The Washington Capitals are also mentioned a team that may be interested in Nabokov but Bruce Boudreau offered this, “We’ve got two great young goaltenders,” Boudreau said. “Not good, but great young goaltenders. We’re not going after anybody else.”
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: It seems like a no brainer for the Lightning to sign Evgeni Nabokov but there a few things that Yzerman has to consider. 1) He’s 35 so if you sign him to multi-year deal he’ll count against the cap even if he stops playing. He struggle at the Olympics last year (and through parts of the season) and in the KHL this year. 2) If they sign him, he still has to clear waivers. 3) How much does he expect to make? Is he looking for something in the $4 million range? If the Lightning decide to go another route the could inquire about Dwayne Roloson and Johan Hedberg as upgrades to their current tandem.
- The Globe and Mail: It looks like Matt Hulsizer is getting closer to owning the Arizona Phoenix Coyotes as the Glendale City Council approved the new lease in a 5-2 vote. The new deal will cost the city $197 million over 6 years, Hulsizer is expected to buy the team for $170 million.
“This is the resolution we sought,” Bettman said after the meeting ended near midnight. “The action taken by the council is successful and conclusive.”
“My reservation here is the city would be left with huge bills and no income from this transaction if Mr. Hulsizer defaults on any of his payments to the city,” said council member Joyce Clark, who voted against the lease. “If, for some reason, he relinquishes control of the Coyotes franchise, the cost to the city would be enormous.”
The Coyotes have not made money since they left Winnipeg in 1996, Hulsizer added,

- The Detroit News: Jimmy Howard will start in the net for the Red Wings tonight against the Blues. Chris Osgood is likely to a get a shot at his 400th career win on either Friday or Saturday.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Tim Connolly and Drew Stafford are expected back in the Sabres lineup tonight versus the Bruins. Rob Niedermayer is likely to return as well. Mark Mancari was sent to the AHL Monday and Luke Adam was sent back yesterday. Nathan Gerbe hasn’t scored in 20 games could be a healthy scratch.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: San Jose Sharks Douglas Murray, Devin Setoguchi and Kent Huskins all skated yesterday before the team left on a 3 game road trip.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The rebuilding process between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton is quite different. From Brian Burke,
“We’re trying to do this without the draft picks. That’s why we signed Phil Kessel. We just have a different model, a different blue-print than Edmonton. We’re trying to rebuild without finishing dead last … although we almost did last year,” said Burke, who traded away his first-round draft pick last June and next summer to the Boston Bruins — who selected Tyler Seguin No. 2 overall behind Hall — for Kessel.
“I think you can rebuild without doing the Ottawa model or the Chicago model, where you finish last or dead-last or close to dead-last for two or three years and reload. I think you can add assets in a (salary) cap system. I build all my teams the same way — from the blue-line out. That’s where I spend my cap dollars. We’re different from Edmonton here. They’re building up front, first (Hall, Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paajarvi, Sam Gagner).

- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Jarome Iginla and Dion Phaneuf shot down rumors that they feuded in Calgary. There were rumors that the 2 had fought, and that Phaneuf was having an affair with a teammates wife/girlfriend.
“Yes, Dion and I had a scrap,” Iginla admitted to the Toronto Sun.
“Ask Dion about our wrestling match,” Iginla said with a wink.
“It was at the hotel one time and we were just fooling around,” Phaneuf confirmed Tuesday.
“I was aware of the rumours. One of them suggested we got into it and one of us ended up with a black eye. I really don’t know where this stuff comes from.”
“Dion and I have been friends for a long time. And we will be long after our respective hockey careers have ended.”

- The Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers are reportedly interested in Dallas Stars centers Brad Richards and Mike Ribeiro if they become available. Ribeiro has a cap of $5 million for the next 2 season, Richards will be a UFA. With the Stars still not able to find an owner, the money may not be there to re-sign him.
- Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said he’s been getting trade offers, “There are deals out there and if you just played in a fantasy league and wanted to be a fantasy GM, you could make great hockey deals. But you can’t because you have to factor the money in. Somebody has got to pay the bills.”
- Steve Yzerman and Steven Stamkos’ agent are talking about a contract, look for something in the 6-7 year range at around $7 million.
- Garrioch thinks that Bob Hartley would be a good hire for the New Jersey Devils if they fire John MacLean.
- It may be hard for the Boston Bruins to demote Michael Ryder to the minors to clear up cap space next month as he’s been one of their better players.
- The Ottawa Senators haven’t had any talks with Chris Phillips who’ll be a UFA at seasons end.
- The Atlanta Thrashers would like to add another forward, GM Rick Dudley has been scouting all over the place.
- Dale Tallon will likely move left winger Cory Stillman later on in the season as he’ll be UFA at seasons end.
- Phoenix is hoping to re-sign Ilya Bryzgalov. Detroit hasn’t had any contract talks with Jimmy Howard. Craig Anderson hasn’t had any talks with Colorado. Tomas Vokoun and Dwayne Roloson will likely be dealt by the trade deadline.
- Joni Pitkanen and Erik Cole will be UFA at the end of this season, Carolina will have to decide if they want to trade or keep them.

- The Lightning and Steven Stamkos’ side have begun talking. LeBrun thinks the Lightning would like to see a Toews/Kane type deal at $6.3 million cap hit, Stamkos’ side may look at Crosby ($8.7 million) and Ovechkin ($9.5 million).
- Talks between the LA Kings and Drew Doughty haven’t begun yet.The Calgary Flames have told Jamore Iginla they won’t trade him this year.
- Players the Boston Bruins could move: Andrew Ference, Marco Sturm, Blake Wheeler, and Michael Ryder.
- Andrei Markov will meet with doctors on Tuesday to determine if it will require surgery or rest.
- The Hurricanes would like to re-sign recently acquired Ian White, but won’t look to do so until after the season.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Steven Stamkos’s agent, Don Meehan, is expected to meet with Lightning GM Steve Yzerman today to discuss contract extension. The Nashville Predators continue to talk with Don Meehan about a contract extension for Shea Weber. Former Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut is still trying to get an arena built to bring the Nordiques back Quebec City. The Red Wings haven’t begun contract talks with soon to be UFA goalie, Jimmy Howard.
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: The LA Kings have lost Willie Mitchell for 4-6 weeks with a fractured wrist (we noted yesterday that initial x-rays didn’t detect the fracture, an MRI was done yesterday). Alexei Ponikarovsky will be out 4 weeks with a broken finger.
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Philadelphia Flyers have signed the 22-year old Claude Giroux to a 3 year contract extension. He’ll have cap hit of $3.75 million, earning $2.75 million in 2011-12, $3.5 million in 2012-13, and $5 million in 2013-14. GM Paul Holmgren is also working on signing Jeff Carter and Ville Leino. Bob McKenzie via twitter: Now that Claude Giroux is looked up for the next 3 years, look for the Flyers to try to sign Jeff Carter to a long-term extension.
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Tampa Bay Lightning left winger Simon Gagne continues to be out with a strained neck (a concussion has been ruled out). He hasn’t been cleared for skating yet, has been riding a stationary bike.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: The Toronto media continues to bring up Ron Wilson’s firing again as the team has 1 regulation win in the last 9 games.
“I don’t even talk to Brian (Burke) about stuff like this,” he said. “It suddenly switched from Lindy Ruff to me overnight and it’s always coming out of Toronto. There is some coach in the league that we’re talking about and I get asked not just about my own situation, but every other coach who is losing a couple of games and it always seems to come out of Toronto, not from the city where the coach is struggling a little bit.”
- Adrian Dater via twitter: Colorado Avalanche injury update. Craig Anderson skated but is still a week or two away from returning. Adam Foote skated but is still out indefinetly. Kyle Cumiskey is also out indefinitely, while Ryan Wilson is out another week.
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers have fired their AHL (Adirondack Phantoms) coach Greg Gilbert. The Phantoms are 2-10-1 and losers of 9 straight. Last week they sent their leading scorer Pat Maroon home. He could be traded or loaned to another team today when Holmgren meets with other GM’s at the general managers meetings, with a team source saying the Lightning could be the leading candidate.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Rumors have surfaced that the Montreal Canadiens are clearing cap space, with the possibility of signing Bill Guerin. Guerin hasn’t heard from GM Pierre Gauthier at all. News on what Guerin plans on doing appears to still be weeks away. If he were to sign somewhere, it would still take a couple weeks to get in game shape. Guerin is also talking to MSG and VS regarding some TV work.
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: David Krejci never lost consciousness when he suffered his “moderate” concussion, he’ll be reevaluated today, and will take an exertion test later this week. Krejci will likely be out 10-14 days.
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres all-star goalie Ryan Miller returned to practice yesterday and should be back either Wednesday or Thursday, with Thursday being more likely according to coach Ruff. Craig Rivet is battling the flu. Nathan Gerbe took part in no-contact drills as he recovers from a broken jaw.
- Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail: The Vancouver Canucks are expected to get defenseman Dan Hamhuis back tonight after missing the last 8 games with a foot injury. Keith Ballard recently returned from a concussion but has been relatively ineffective. Andrew Alberts and Aaron Rome have filled in well. Sami Salo is recovering ahead of schedule so far, and could return to the lineup next month. Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: MacIntyre thinks that if Hamhuis returns, Ballard should sit over Rome.

- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jordan Staal was getting ready to return to the Penguins lineup this week, but will now be out 6 weeks. Staal took a puck to the hand, breaking it, and will undergo surgery today.
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Drew Doughty was wearing a no-contact jersey at Kings practice yesterday. Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: If everything is well when Doughty wakes up today, he’ll do the ‘baseline’ test today.
- Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Jason Pominville appears to be ready to go for Wednesday game against the Bruins. Pominville’s return will be a welcome for the 3-7-2 Sabres. Ryan Miller missed practiced yesterday with a none serious, lower-body injury.
- Rich Chere via twitter: Jason Arnott feels he did nothing wrong to deserve the benching, “Not in my mind. It’s been a little weird this season.” Arnott leads the team in scoring with 6 points and has the second worst team +/- at -9.
- David Goricki of the Detroit News: Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood is day-to-day with a groin injury, he left practice yesterday after 10 minutes. Jimmy Howard was back on the ice and will start on Wednesday. Brian Rafalski left with the team on their road trip, he might return next Monday when they return home.
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman doesn’t think he needs to acquire another player anytime soon, “If anything, I don’t know if it’s anything personnel-wise we have to change,” Bowman said. “It’s just getting acclimated to the new group we have here, and bringing in another new face really wouldn’t be the answer. The 2012 NHL draft may be held at the United Center.
- The Daily Herald: The Chicago Blackhawks activated Brian Campbell yesterday and placed David Bolland on IR. Bolland had 3 points in 12 games this season.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: The Maple Leafs are sticking by their guns with regards to letting Nazem Kadri develop in the AHL for now. The offensively challenged called up Christian Hansen and Luca Caputi last week, and left the Marlies leading scorer (4 goals, 4 assists in 8 games) to continue to work in his game in the minors. “It’s exactly the right situation,” Marlies coach Dallas Eakins said. “You know what, he has enough skill and creativity right now to play in the NHL. The problem is, that skill and creativity will be just greatly exposed [when he makes mistakes] and he would be the goat in the NHL.” Don Cherry doesn’t agree and let his feeling be known on Coaches’ Corner on Saturday.
- Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: Alex Burrows will return to the Vancouver Canucks lineup tonight versus the Oilers. Burrows has been recovering for the last 5 months from shoulder surgery.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Montreal Canadiens are carrying 8 defenseman, Jaroslav Spacek and Ryan O’Byrne will be healthy scratches tonight.

- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Chicago Blackhawks center David Bolland did not return for the 3rd period last night. Bolland didn’t practice Thursday and Sassone wonders if Bolland’s surgically repaired back is acting up.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Dan Hamhuis lasted about 5 minutes trying to skate yesterday. He’s been out for 2 weeks, and a Monday return is unlikely. Keith Ballard is likely to return before Hamhuis now.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: There haven’t been any contract extension talks between Craig Anderson and the Colorado Avalanche. Dater thinks the Avs could be taking this approach, “Let’s wait and see how he performs again for a good portion of this year before we back up the money truck. Let’s keep that carrot dangling in front of him a while longer, and maybe get a win-win situation. The better he plays, the more money he knows he’ll make and the better he plays, the more we win hockey games.”
- Eric Stephen of the OC Register: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler practiced yesterday and said he’s close to returning from a broken nose and jammed neck. Fowler said he might be able to go today, and if not, may be next Wednesday.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: The Edmonton Oilers victory last night was the first regulation road win for them since December 11, 2009.
- George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press: Justin Abdelkader will return to the Red Wings line up tonight against the Predators. Abdelkader could replace Jiri Hudler or Mike Modano. He alternated with Hudler, Modano and Dan Cleary in practice yesterday. Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Ericsson are still out with back spasms.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Evgeny Artyukhin failed his SKA physical as he has heart problems, the team declined to sign him. He’ll be taking a more extensive medical, SKA will wait for those results.

- Tom Gulitti via twitter: The decision to scratch Ilya Kovalchuk from the New Jersey Devils lineup was made mid-day, and it was John MacLean’s decision and not managements. MacLean later added, “I’m not discussing it. It was my decision. I made it. He (Kovy) knows. I spoke to him and that’s where it’s going to stay.” EJ Hradek is not buying that MacLean didn’t run this by Lou Lamorielle before making the decision. Andy Strickland tweeted that since New Jersey is one of most secretive organizations, Kovalchuk either violated a team rule or is injured. Gulitti tweeted that MacLean wouldn’t give the reason why he sat him, and wouldn’t answer if it was because of his play.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Ottawa Senators would like Anaheim Ducks to take Brian Lee off their hands, the Ducks may be more interested Chris Campoli, though there may not be a fit between the 2 teams. The Ducks have also been talking to the Sabres. Erik Ersberg cleared waivers and his contract was terminated. Ersberg originally reported to the AHL, but he left the team on Thursday, therefore the Kings were able to terminate the contact due to breach of contract. Jimmy Howard is a UFA at seasons end, there haven’t been any contract talks between him and the Red Wings yet.
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Jason Spezza missed his 3rd game of the season with a groin injury. “We’re going to sit him until he’s 100 per cent confident that he can go out and play at the top of his game,” coach Cory Clouston said Saturday morning. “We have to trust that he knows his body and when he goes in and talks to the doctors and trainers, it’s not going to be 70 per cent or 60 per cent. It has got to be 95 per cent or 100 per cent.” Pascal Leclaire is also out with a groin injury, is practicing on his own is could be back within a week.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: St. Louis Blues defenseman Roman Polak sliced his right wrist on Sidney Crosby’s skate last night. Full extent of injury isn’t known yet, but Strickland was told it’s likely he avoided serious ligament or tendon damage.
- Jeff Klein of the NY Times: Brandon Prust who was clipped in the eye by a high stick has been cleared by doctors, flew home with the team.
