Plenty of roster notes on the Flyers, Hartnell trade rumor … Penguins cut 7 … Goalie battle on the Isles … Sestito suspended

  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelpia Inquirer: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said there is a chance the both Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier could make the team. Schenn has an apparent shoulder injury that could play into the decision. Holmgren doesn’t expect to have the roster finalized until 3 p.m. next Wednesday. If Schenn and Couturier do make the team, if will affect Matt Read who’s had an excellent camp. The Flyers could keep Couturier for up to 10 games before sending him back to junior. Couturier carries a $1.3 million cap hit if he remains with the Flyers which may come into play. Schenn has a $3.1 million cap hit.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Some factors into the Flyers roster decisions are: “Jody Shelley’s suspension,  injuries to Brayden Schenn and James van Riemsdyk, competition among Matt Read, Zac Rinaldo and Sean Couturier, whether the Flyers carry 22 or 23 players, the salary cap.” Currently the Flyers have less than $200,000  in cap space. The hot rumor of the day was Scott Hartnell and his $4.2 million cap hit heading to Nashville. A club source said the chances of a trade are “pretty good.” Two club sources are saying that Matt Read made the team. The Flyers will get $1.16 million in cap relief once the season starts and they can put Ian Laperriere on LTIR.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Put on waivers yesterday: McKenna (OTT); Fischmon, Marcinko, Wallace, Reese, Wishart (NYI); J.F. Jacques (ANA), C McDonald, Nick Johnson, R Craig, Munroe (PIT); Alex Henry (MTL).
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Penguins have reduced their camp roster to 32 after cutting 7 players yesterday. Scott Harrington was returned to junior. Eric Tangradi, Ryan Craig, Nick Johnson, Colin McDonald, Brad Thiessen and Scott Munroe were assigned to the AHL. Johnson, Craig, McDonald  and Munroe need to clear waivers.
  • Brett Cyrgalis of the NY Post: It’s a 3-way battle on Long Island between Rick DiPietro, Evgeni Nabokov and Al Montoya. “Are we leaning that way? I’m not going to lie to you, we probably are,” Capuano said. “But we haven’t really determined who plays where and when.”
  • Ted Wyman of the Winnipeg Sun: The Jets still have 10 defenseman in camp. The Jets final pre-season game is Friday, and they don’t play again for 9 days.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers forward Tom Sestito was suspended for 2 pre-season games and 2 regular season games. Sestito cleared waivers and was assigned to the AHL.

Carlson, Gagne and Kubina hurt last night … Flyers roster notes … Dallas Stars sale progressing

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Capitals rookie defenseman John Carlson collided with Nate Thompson late in the 2nd period. He lasted about 36 seconds on 2 very short shifts in the 3rd before leaving for good. He’ll be listed as day-to-day, and Bruce Boudreau is hoping he’ll be able to go on Sunday.
  • Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times: Lightning forward Simon Gagne likely suffered a concussion in the 1st period after his head slammed against the ice after a Scott Hannon hit. Gagne has a history of concussions. Defenseman Pavel Kubina also left the game. His head banged off the glass after taking a Jason Chimera hit, who received a roughing penalty.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers will likely go with 6 defense in Game 1 (had been going with 7 due to the uncertainty of Chris Pronger’s hand). Defenseman Danny Syvret will likely be a healthy scratch. Jody Shelley or rookie Zac Rinaldo will be on the 4th line. Jeff Carter is doubtful for the first 2 games of the series. Andreas Nodl practiced but won’t go in Game 1. Sergei Bobrovsky will backup Brian Boucher as Michael Leighton still has a sore back.
  • George Richards of the Miami Herald: The Panthers have had some contract discussions with 2010 1st round draft pick, Erik Gudbranson, “but there’s no deadline. We don’t have to have him signed right now. There are more pressing issues.” They’ve also had one “general” discussion with Tomas Vokoun people, so there is chance that he may not leave by free agency.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: There is a small group of Blackhawk fans who think they should trade Patrick Kane. (um…okay…yeah….do these people know anything about hockey? This makes absolutely no sense and isn’t going to happen. It doesn’t deserve to be even posted, but I did it anyways as it’s pretty funny.)
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Two sources confirmed that Tom Gaglardi is in the 30-day negotiation window to purchase the Dallas Stars. Gaglardi’s offer is “significantly” better than the other offers. If everything goes to plan, the deal could be done by June. This could be helpful in giving the Stars an opportunity to have some serious negotiations with Brad Richards (though Richards may want to test the free agent market anyways). It would also allow them to get their new head coach in place. Possible candidates are Texas Stars coach Glen Gulutzan or Canadiens assistand coach Kirk Muller (in yesterday’s post and in that article we/they said that Kirk Muller will likely get the job).

Bogosian not happy in Atlanta … Bruins looking at 9 Dmen … Kovalev days in OTT could be numbered … Arnott undecided about waiving no trade

  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Though he hasn’t officially asked for a trade, it’s been noted that Thrashers defenseman Zach Bogosian isn’t happy in Atlanta and may like a change of scenery by next year.
  • James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Multiple reports are saying the Maple Leafs and Bruins are discussing a Tomas Kaberle trade. This will likely be the last chance Burke has to get an asset back for Kaberle as it’s unlikely he would re-sign with the Leafs.
  • Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: The Bruins have added some depth with 3rd liner Chris Kelly, should now turn their focus to adding a much needed defenseman. The Tomas Kaberle rumors are running rampant. “Tomas Kaberle has not waived his no-trade clause concerning Boston,” Burke said. GM Peter Chiarelli said they have a list of 9 defenseman.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie could only come up with 7 of 9 defenseman that the Boston Bruins could be interested in: Tomas Kaberle, Joni Pitkanen, Eric Brewer, Bryan McCabe, Chris Phillips, Ed Jovanovski, Zach Bogosian.
  • Jim Matheson via twitter: Matheson thinks that if the Dallas Stars continue to drop in the standings they have to trade Brad Richards (if his head injury is minor).
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards didn’t fly with the team and will not play tonight against Calgary. Coach Marc Crawford said he’ll be re-evaluated today, and could join the team before Saturday’s game.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Senators GM Bryan Murray said this morning that he hope to make “one or two more” trades and there is nothing new on the Chris Phillips front.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Alex Kovalev realizes that his days as an Ottawa Senator could be coming to an end and he’s not letting the rumors bother him. “I’ve been around for a long time, I’ve been traded a few times, so it’s not new for me,” Kovalev said of the constant trade speculation surrounding himself and several teammates. “The job is still the same, to be a hockey player and help whatever team (you’re) playing for.”
  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Jason Arnott is still pondering about waiving his no-trade clause. He wants to play in the playoffs this year, but the Devils are on quite the run and may feel they have a shot if it continues. Arnott has talked to Lamoriello ‘in theory’ about waiving it, with the Penguins, Canadiens, and Capitals rumored to be interested.

“We’ve still got a long way to go and I think it will be a little more clear more towards the deadline,” he told me today. “If we win every game from now until the deadline, it’s going to be a real tough decision because then I’ve got to gamble on whether we’re going to win out, win the rest of the season or try to get on a playoff team. As it gets closer, it will become more clear and we’ll see what we do.”

  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Despite all their injuries to their blueline, McKenzie doesn’t think the Canucks are in the market for a defenseman.
  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: With the acquisition of Kris Versteeg, look for the Flyers to shop either Daniel Carcillo or Jody Shelley.
  • Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel: The Panthers could look to move Cory Stillman, he’d like to stay but realizes a trade could happen. “There’s always an uneasy feeling that it’s happened once before, it could happen again,’’ said Stillman, who has eight 20-plus goal seasons. “My goal coming here almost three years ago was to help put the team in a playoff spot with a chance to win.
  • Capgeek.com: Dustin Byfuglien 5 year, $26 million contract extension carries a $5.2 million cap hit. He was making $3 million this year. Capgeek is showing that he has yearly salaries of $4.25 million, $4.25 million, $5.75 million, $5.75 million, and $6 million.
  • Brian Hamilton of Chicago Breaking Sports: Patrick Kane missed another practice yesterday with an illness but coach Joel Quenneville is hopeful that he’ll be in the lineup tonight against the Wild. Corey Crawford will start in net for the Blackhawks.

Kings may look at Kovalchuk, Martin, and Hamhuis … Saku to Minny? Colaiacovo and Weaver may be done in St. Louis

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The LA Kings are still the front runners to land Ilya Kovalchuk. The Kings may also look at signing Paul Martin and Dan Hamhuis, if they are available. They will have to keep in mind that Drew Doughty, Jack Johnson and Wayne Simmons will be RFA next season, so they can’t let their salaries get out a whack.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers are close re-signing tough guy Jody Shelley, possibly to a 2 year deal worth around $850,000 a season. Erik Christensen rejected a 2 year deal for about $1.5 million, and will become a UFA.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Despite acquiring Keith Ballard at the draft, the Vancouver Canucks are still on the lookout for defenseman. The Canucks had a terrible time last season with injuries to the blueline, so they’ll be looking for inexpensive, non-injury prone Dmen. Kevin Bieksa is a $3.75 million cap hit, is projected as their 5th defenseman, and could be moved for a ‘battle-tested forward’.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: If Saku Koivu wants to join his brother Mikko in Minnesota, it’s probably his choice. Last season the Wild offered Saku a 2-year deal worth $8 million and 3-year for $10 million, instead he took 1-year at $3.25 million. He turned down the offer because “I wanted him to have his own privacy … and make his own name and career”. The Wild could use another centerman and may talk Saku again this year.
  • Vicki hall of the Calgary Herald: Though Ales Kotalik was placed on waivers by the Calgary Flames, he may not be bought out, but the team still has the option to do so.

Ryan to Leafs unlikely … Volchenkov and Spezza update … Bruins how to trade Thomas this week

  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Despite some wishes from Leaf Nation, it’s unlikely that Bobby Ryan will end up with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs have made no contact with the Ducks, but have been monitoring the situation. Ryan has been a little worried about the lack of progress on contract talks. He also denied reports that he’s looking for Corey Perry/Ryan Getzlaf money, $5.325 million. “I don’t want to force (management’s) hand and I don’t want them to force mine,” Ryan said. “I want to get it closed out before hand. There hasn’t been anything that’s gone in the right direction. But there’s no hostility.”
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: If Anton Volchenkov and the Ottawa Senators can’t come to an agreement soon, the Senators may deal his negotiating rights. Volchenkov is looking for $4.5-5 million per season. If they don’t re-sign him, they will look to bring in a more mobile defenseman, possibly Sheldon Souray who they’ve shown a little interest in. The Sens hope to bring back Matt Cullen and Andy Sutton. It’s unlikely the Senators will move up from their 16th draft slot.
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: If the Senators are going to trade Jason Spezza, they’ll be hoping to get something done before July 1st, as Spezza is owed $4 million on Canada Day. I’m sure other teams know this and will look to make a deal afterwards. The Senators may find there are limited teams interested in taking on his remaining 5 years and $33 million, and that willing give back a fair return for him. Teams that could be in the market for a center; Panthers, Sharks, Flames, Bruins, Oilers, Kings, and Wild.
  • Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Bryan Murray isn’t going to trade Jason Spezza just for the sake of trading him. “He’s a player that we’re counting on being an important part of our hockey team, but like every player, there’s a possibility I get an offer that I can’t refuse,” Murray said Monday.
  • Joe Haggery of CSNNE: One of the Bruins top priorities heading in to this weekends draft is finding a trade partner for Tim Thomas. The San Jose Sharks and Tampa Bay Lightning are said to have some discussions, and if the Flyers are able to shed some salary, they could enter the mix. Thomas had hip surgery after the playoffs, is owed $15 million over the next 3 years, and has a no-trade clause in 2 of the 3 years.
  • Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: The Washington Capitals and Tomas Fleischmann don’t appear to be close on a deal for the RFA. The Capitals sent him a qualifying offer, a 5% increase on his 2009-10 salary of $725,000. Fleischmann is looking for a multi-year deal. Fleischmann may be using Tomas Plekanec as a comparable, he made $2.75 million last year, but is looking in the $5 million range on a new deal.
  • Richard Durrett of ESPN: Mike Modano told ESPN radio that if he decides to return to play another season, he hasn’t ruled out signing with someone other than the Dallas Stars if the team has a legitimate shot at the Cup.
  • Chris McCosky of the Detroit News: Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland may look to add an enforcer through trade or free agency. The Wings currently sit at $54.2 million for 18 players, with several RFAs to re-sign, so it would have to be an enforcer/agitator willing to work for cheap. Possible players could be Kryotopher Barch, Derek Boogaard, Cody McCormick, Jody Shelley, and Georges Laraque (after he’s bought out).
  • Kevin Allen via Twitter: Dustin Byfuglien is definitely available. I think the ‘Hawks will capitalize on Byfuglien’s strong playoff performance.
