Jacques Lemaire in, John MacLean out in New Jersey
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on December 23rd, 2010
11:00 AM: Tom Gulitti via twitter: John MacLean has been fired by the NJ Devils and Jacques Lemaire will take over. Lemaire will only coach the Devils for the remainder of the season. MacLean will remain with the organization in a role to be determined later.
9:15 AM: Charles Payette of CKAC Sports: Payette is saying that Michel Langevin of CKAC was told by sources close to the New Jersey Devils might have Jacques Lemaire behind the bench tonight, replacing John MacLean.
They are saying that Lemaire caught a flight to New Jersey this morning to resume coaching the team. Lemaire retired from coaching last year after the Devils were eliminated from the 1st round.
The Devils are 9-22-2 this season and are tied for last overall with 20 points. They have only 1 win in 9 games in December.
Hotstove and NHL Sources Say videos … DiPietro and Leclaire hurt, there’s a shocker … Staal still hasn’t received clearance
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on December 19th, 2010
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Simmons thinks that Darryl Sutter didn’t make a mistake in trading Dion Phaneuf, mistake was not shopping him around or getting 1 decent player in return. Simmons asks a couple good questions about the Leafs power play; “Why does Phil Kessel play so high? With his quick hands, shouldn’t he be down low camped out on one side of the net?” (My answer would be coaching, they are the one’s who design the systems)
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: John MacLean hasn’t received any assurance about his coaching job from Lou Lamoriello in the last couple weeks.
- The Globe and Mail: Penguins center Jordan Staal’s return is still up in the air as he has yet to receive clearance to begin practicing.
- The Globe and Mail: Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro is out again with swelling in his left knee, but appears to only be minor.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Pascal Leclaire can’t shake the injury bug. He was unable to start on Friday due to a lower body injury
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Christmas roster freeze is in effect tonight at midnight. The Senators are interested in trading for Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa but he isn’t available yet.
- Joshua Cooper via twitter: The Predators should get either David Legwand or Patrick Hornqvist back on Wednesday.
- Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove
- NHL Sources Say – Donald Fehr’s new role with the NHLPA as well as Pascal Leclaire’s future with the Senators.
Brodeur back in tonight … Time to fire MacLean? Staal has setback? Bruins make 2 minor trades
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Trades on December 10th, 2010
- John Buccigross via twitter: Martin Brodeur is expected to make his first start since November 18th for the NJ Devils tonight against the Senators.
- Steve Politi of the Star-Ledger: It may not be fair due to the amount of injuries the Devils have had so far this season, “But the GM has to protect his franchise. Firing the coach might solve absolutely nothing, but if the team continues spiraling toward oblivion, and if losing becomes an expectation, Lamoriello will have no other choice.”
- Chris Botta of FanHouse: The Devils won’t trade their younger players for older players in attempt to turn their season around,
“Lou has told everyone — agents, the other GMs, his own staff — that one thing he has no interest in is adding veterans on the back end of their primes,” an NHL executive tells FanHouse. “Believe me, plenty of people have poked around. There are still a few free agents who could help them the rest of this season. There’s a trade or two he can make. But, as you’d expect from Lou, he’s not going to go away from what he believes in.”
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Jordan Staal’s mid-December return has been pushed back as he still recovers from surgery on his broken right hand. According to coach Dan Bylsma, “He’s been working out hard and skating hard, but he just started the process of putting motion and movement into rehab with his hand.”
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: Jordan Staal’s x-rays this week showed another break in his surgically repaired hand.
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: Marco Sturm said there were a couple teams interested in his services before the LA Kings deal fell through. Nobody with the Bruins has said anything about being sent to the AHL.
- Ken Sugiura of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Ondrej Pavelec will make his 11th consecutive start for the Thrashers tonight versus the Avalanche. Chris Mason will get the start for the Thrashers on Saturday versus the Islanders.
- Boston Herald: The Boston Bruins made a couple minor league deals yesterday. The Bruins traded Levi Nelson to the Lightning for Juraj Simek. They also sent Jeff LoVecchio and Jordan Knackstedt to the Panthers for Sean Zimmerman and a 7th round pick.
- Washington Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau calls out his star players:
Kane out 3 weeks … Poni to return Thursday, Mitchell Close … Phanuef could return Saturday … Horcoff out 8 weeks?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on December 8th, 2010
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Patrick Kane will be out the Chicago Blackhawks lineup for about 3 weeks with a sprained ankle. “We’re going to leave it as a lower body (injury), but I think you can speculate what it is. Certainly that’s the extent of it and he’s progressing right now.”
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: If the Stars decide to move Brad Richards at the trade deadline “it’s only because (1) they weren’t able to sign him to an extension and (2) they’re offered the kind of deal that sets them up “for the next five years.” The Sharks continue to look for a top 4 defenseman. If Devils coach John MacLean can’t find a way to get Ilya Kovalchuk scoring (5 goals in 26 games), they should find someone who can (my fantasy team would appreciate this as well).
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers center Shawn Horcoff felt his knee ‘pop’ after colliding with Corey Perry. Coach Tom Renney guesses he could be out 8 weeks. Horcoff will have an MRI done today, he does have a damaged MCL. They could call up one of Linus Omark, Liam Reddox or Ryan O’Marra.
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Alexei Ponikarovsky (fractured finger) said he’ll be ready to go on Thursday vs. the Flames.
- Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider: LA Kings defenseman Willie Mitchell is getting closer to returning, as he practiced yesterday without his wrist brace. Mitchell will be examined on Thursday and will look to get clearance. Ponikarovsky was pronounced ready to return by Terry Murray and will be on the left side of Michal Handzus and Wayne Simmons.
- James Mirtle via twitter: Dion Phaneuf practiced with the Maple Leafs yesterday and could return on Saturday for their game against the Canadiens.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Bruins defenseman Mark Stuart has an upper body injury, more will be known today.
- EJ McGuire of the CSB talking 2011 NHL Draft on NYI Point Blank:
Markov to have season ending knee surgery … Sens working a big deal? Lupul to return Sunday? Sturm and Chiarelli have a plan
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 4th, 2010
-
Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail: Andrei Markov will face season ending knee surgery, a complete rebuild of his ACL. It is the same ACL that had surgery on 7 months ago. Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday. Markov will be a UFA after this season. He’ll be placed on LTIR, so the Canadiens will have some extra cap room to bring in another defenseman if they choose.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray is trying to trade Brian Lee, but he may also be working on a larger deal that could shake up the Sens. Teams are interested in some of their younger players, and 2 or 3 teams have shown interest in Brian Lee. The Vancouver Canucks could be one teams the Sens are talking to as GM Mike Gillis could be looking to make a deal as well. Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Even though Lee has cleared waivers, he remains with the team. They taped a ‘C’ on his sweater at practice yesterday, and he was skating with Peter Regin and Jason Spezza. Alfredsson was given a ‘maintenance day’.
- Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Joffery Lupul could return to the Anaheim Ducks lineup on Sunday.
- Rich Thompson of the Boston Herald:
According to Sturm, Chiarelli mapped out a plan that would serve both their interests. Sturm agreed to waive the no trade clause for a say on where he might end up. The Kings were obviously on Sturm’s short list, and he refused to divulge other interested parties.
“A couple of days ago Peter explained to me the situation and asked me if I would move my no-trade clause,” Sturm said. “I thought about it overnight and told him OK and he told me the teams who were interested.
I told him I would waive my no trade and now I have to wait. The teams he told me are very good teams and a few of them I think would be a good fit.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: There have been more GMs and Scouts at Maple Leafs games recently. Dion Phaneuf could return on the Leafs western road trip begin on the 14th, so a they may move a defenseman for a forward.
- James Mirtle via twitter: One GM “The teams that need something are the ones that aren’t winning all the time so you’re talking to teams like the Leafs.”
- Chris Johnson via twitter: Atlanta Thrashers GM Rick Dudley has watched the Maple Leafs last 2 games.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: John MacLean’s time behind the NJ Devils bench may be limited. “Among the rumors swirling as the Devils prepared to face the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center was the return of Jacques Lemaire out of retirement or another stint for general manager Lou Lamoriello.” Ken Hitchcock and Bob Hartely have also been rumored. Martin Brodeur could skate today.
- Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins forward Max Talbot had to be helped off the ice at practice after blocking a shot in the foot. There is a chance he’ll play tonight. Evgeni Malkin is day-to-day after suffering an unspecified injury on Thursday, he missed practice yesterday. The Penguins might call someone up for insurance.
Kovalchuk offered $14 million per season? Flyers may not re-sign Leighten … Would the Bruins trade Bergeron?
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Free Agents, NHL Rumors on June 7th, 2010
- Sport-Express.ru: The SKA St. Petersburg reportedly have increased their offer to Ilya Kovalchuk to 3 years and $42 million. It was reported that they previously offered Kovalchuk 3 years and $30 million.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Despite helping take the Philadelphia Flyers to game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals (after filling in for Brian Boucher part way through the playoffs … and he may not get the game 6 start), it might not gaurantee that goalie Michael Leighton will re-sign with the Flyers. They may think he’s “a one-trick pony on a magical ride”, and look towards a Turco, Mason, Nabokov, Halak or Price.
- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: One option the Bruins have in their quest to find a scoring winger or two, is to consider trading Patrice Bergeron, especially if the Oilers draft Taylor Hall. If the Bruins were to trade him, they would still have a solid one-two punch of Marc Savard and David Krejci, and possibly Tyler Seguin down the middle. Bergeron is a UFA at the end of next season, and is making $4.25 next season, and would be looking for a raise. He has a no-trade clause that kicks in July 1st.
- TSN: Contract talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nikolai Kulemin have hit a wall. It was reported earlier that Kulemin is looking for at least $3 million per season deal. He recorded 36 points in 78 games last season. Burke told AM 640, “While they can say: ‘he was on your first line last year,’ there is no one who would say Nikolai Kulemin is a first line left winger. He’s a first line left winger by default because we did not have a very good team. I’m not paying for someone who gets the position by default.”
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Craig MacTavish and Mike Keenan appear to be out of the running for the head coaching vacancy in New Jersey. The leading candidates are John MacLean and Michel Therrien, other options are Ken Hitchcock, Kirk Muller, and Guy Boucher. Boucher was offered the coaching position in Columbus.
- Bob McKenzie of TSN: The Blue Jackets would like an answer from Guy Boucher if he wants the head coaching position by Tuesday.
Changes Coming in LA and Buffalo … Devils Coaching Options
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News on April 28th, 2010
- Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times: The LA Kings have 9 free agents to deal with this off-seaosn, 6 UFAs and 3 RFAs, and there is a chance at all 6 UFAs won’t be back. Alexander Frolov could be looking for $5 million a year, not likely getting that in LA, or maybe from anyone else in the NHL. Freddie Modin wasn’t very productive since being acquired at the deadline. Jeff Halpren didn’t have much success either. Poor defensive play since December injury, and coming off a $3 million contract may have paved the wayRandy Jones to move on. The game may be getting too quick for Sean O’Donnell. Raitis Ivanans may not be worth the roster spot anymore. Their 3 restricted free agents, Brad Richardson, Scott Parse, and Rich Clune, all made under $600,000 and wouldn’t be getting big raises, so they might be back.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Jason Spezza’s no movement clause starts on July 1st, and fans are starting to hope that he’s traded. But fans may not get their wish as both he, and the Sens would like to have him wearing a Senators uniform next season.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC.ca: Anton Volchenkov’s starting point will be Mike Komisarek’s 5 year, $22.5 million, and someone will give that or more. Friedman thinks Halak won’t re-sign in Montreal unless it’s for a boat load of cash. Wherever Carey Price ends up next year, he needs a veteran goalie to mentor him. Doug Risebrough is in the running for the Lightning GM job, and could be a candidate for San Jose if the organization goes in a different direction. The Lightning’s new GM will decide the fate of Vinny Lecavalier, new owner Jeffrey Vinik might be open to keeping him.
- Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News: Changes could be coming with the Buffalo Sabres, GM Darcy Regier and coach Lindy Ruff could be on the hotseat. Tim Connolly, Jason Pominville, Derek Roy underacheived. Trade deadline acquisition Raffi Torres was a scratch for their elimination game. The team in general is on the small side, without the physical side that you need in the playoffs.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New Jersey Devils will be searching for a new coach at Lemaire retired after one year. Brooks thinks the Devils should look inhouse and promote their AHL coach and long time Devil, John MacLean. Other candidates could be Ken Hitchcock, Bob Hartley, and Mike Keenan.
