- Darren Dreger of TSN: The Leafs are looking for a Dman, but won’t overpay for it. Sens GM Bryan Murray has talked to Chris Phillips’ agent about possible contract extensions, though he could still waive his no-trade clause and be moved out. The Canadiens could have an interest in Bryan McCabe. The Canucks may need to add a 3rd/4th line center. Though there’s interest in Smid, Penner, and Hemsky, nothing is imminent. The Flames may look to add a forward.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards hasn’t skated since Feb. 13th and is suffering concussion-like symptoms. GM Nieuwendyk does not expect Richards to play a game before Monday’s trade deadline, and that he’s not shopping him around. “It’s the same answer it has been. Our first priority is to re-sign Brad Richards to a long-term contract. That is what we would like to do,” Nieuwendyk said. “However, we have to be open to any possibility and we have to be open to situation that could improve our team.”
- Jesse Spector of the NY Daily News: The Daily News has learned that the Brad Richards is likely staying in Dallas as the team is said to be buyers and not sellers. If the Stars decide to move him, and he waives his no-trade, the Rangers may not be willing to part with the young players the Stars want in return. The Rangers are more likely to look for low cost veteran rental.
- Tim Seppa (hockey prospectus) on ESPN: Seppa looks at “Problems” and “Fixes” for the Atlantic Division. Philadelphia Flyers: Problem is goaltending, with Tomas Vokoun as a possible fix. Pittsburgh Penguins: Problem with Penguins is the 2nd line center spot and PP due to injuries. Tim Connolly could be an option. New York Rangers: Need 1 or 2 top 6 forwards. Leafs Clarke MacArthur could be an option if they don’t plan on re-signing him. New Jersey Devils: Problem is the lack of a puck moving defenseman. John-Michael Liles could be an option, Lou may need to trade away David Clarkson to clear cap space. New York Islanders: They need to keep stockpiling prospects/picks. Milan Jurcina could be moved out, possibly to Anaheim for Luca Sbisa.
- NHL Sources Say video from Tuesday: “The Hockeycentral panel take a look at a current Oiler and a former Leaf who could be traded before Monday’s deadline.”
Steep price for Rangers to get Richards … Chris Phillips and his no-trade … 3 looking at Kovalev … Pens looking at Stillman, Higgins … Leafs and Liles … plus more
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 24th, 2011
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Post was told that Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk told the Rangers GM Glen Sather that it would cost 3 young roster players, possibly Marc Staal, Brandon Dubinsky and Derek Stepan for Brad Richards. The Rangers have also inquired about Bryan McCabe and his no-movement clause, his agent said “Nothing has evolved to the point where he has to make any decisions.”
- Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: Chris Phillips still wants to stay in Ottawa and re-sign with the club. But if he doesn’t get a guarantee that he’ll get an extension by the trade deadline, he’ll have to decide if he’d waive his no-trade clause. “Now, being more involved with having to make decisions that effect the outcome is the biggest difference,” [Phillips] said. “Ultimately, I am (in control), when it comes right down to it, but it has been pretty open communication with Bryan. It’s not like we’re having a standoff and see who blinks first. We’re talking about it. Between us and them, it is a collective decision, but I guess I have the final say.”
- Will DePaoli via twitter: The Washington Capitals have shown preliminary interest in Alex Kovalev. Penguins and Lightning also interested.

Leafs have list of 5 Dmen … Flames looking for Dman, lack trade chips … Pens considering Kovalev … Canes liked Liles
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Rumors on February 22nd, 2011
- Darren Dreger of TSN: The Maple Leafs have a list of 5 defenseman they are after, and trade offers have been made. John-Michael Liles is one Dman they’ve looked at, but the Avalanche may want to hold off a week before deciding if they want to make a move. The Leafs have shown interest in Dustin Penner, but he Oilers are under no pressure to move him. GM Tambellini will be looking for 1st round pick or top prospect as starting point.
- Kevin Allen of the USA Today: The Canucks may still need to a defenseman, even if some of their guys return. The Penguins are still looking to add, but won’t give up valuable assets (ie. 1st round pick). Several teams have inquired about Stephen Weiss, and they Panthers may be willing to look at doing a ‘true hockey deal.’ The Sabres would like to make a move, but find the prices too high at the moment. If the Coyotes look to add anything, it would have to be a dollar-for-dollar deal. The Senators would like to trade Chris Phillips and Alex Kovalev. The Thrashers are still looking at what is available.
- Dave Molinari and Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Even after adding James Neal, the Penguins are seriously considering adding right winger Alex Kovalev. Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Penguins want to add another winger, and may have to settle with Kovalev for a late pick as the asking price for better players is too high.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: The Flames would like to add another defense, hence Hagman going on waivers. GM Feaster doesn’t have a 2nd or 3rd round pick this year. Bob McKenzie via twitter: Feaster doesn’t have many trade chips as he doesn’t want to move a roster player, or keeping trading away draft pick. Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Feaster told LeBrun that he doesn’t want to move 2012 draft picks to make up for the lack of 2011 picks.
- Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster,
“One of the things I think we need to do in order to have long-term success is to stop what I call the deficit spending, ” Feaster said. “You end up moving a second for next year and a third for next year at the trade deadline this year, and you’re going to find yourself right back in the same situation.”
“We’re not going to be a seller,” Feaster said, firmly. “This hockey organization doesn’t deserve that. This group has played right back into contention, and our mission hasn’t changed since Day 1. And it certainly hasn’t changed since I was named on Dec. 28.
“And that is to make the playoffs.”
- Luke DeCock via twitter: The Carolina Hurricanes were high on John-Michael Liles at one point, and he may be on the move.
- On Frozen Pond via facebook: Peter DeBoar on the Panthers, “In the position we’re in, what management has said, has heightened things. More guys are on notice that they might not be here at the end of the weekend.”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: The NY Islanders have no intention of putting Evgeni Nabokov on waivers.
NHL rumors involving the several Senators, Canadiens, Kings, Panthers, Blue Jackets and more
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Audio, NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 22nd, 2011
- Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post: “We’ve stripped down and added a lot of young assets,” Burke told the crowd. “We’ve gone through, now, the selling part of this process. We are buyers now. We’re trying to add a defenceman right now.” Burke said he wanted to add a defenseman by the end of [today], and has a couple things going on. MacArthur could be moved before the deadline if contract talks don’t go well. Burke hopes to make some more moves before the 28th trade deadline.
- Brian Burke Audio from James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail:
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Sources told Strickland that the Panthers and Rangers had a deal almost done for Bryan McCabe several weeks ago but he broke his jaw. They may re-visit the deal. McCabe has a no-movement clause and he may be very selective as to where he’d go.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators and Chris Phillips have talked contract extension (possibly a 3 year deal), but if they can’t get a deal done, he could be moved. Chris Neil has apparently given the Senators a list of 10 teams he can’t be dealt too. The Rangers could be interested in Neil who has 2 years with a $2 million cap hit. The Rangers are said to be interested in Filip Kuba, who has another year left at a $3.7 million cap hit. There may only be 1 or 2 teams interested in Alexei Kovalev, and he wouldn’t cost much.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The Kings were interested in James Neal before he was dealt yesterday but weren’t interested in giving up one of their top defenseman for him. They’ve looked David Booth and Ales Hemsky, but won’t move Brayden Schenn.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers could buyout Sheldon Souray after the season. Coach Tom Renney added, “Would the Oilers take him back next year? I would keep an open mind,” said Renney. The fact that Souray has 1 more year left on his deal is what likely scared teams off. Souray’s foot speed was also an issue.
- David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period: The Canadiens are looking for a top 6 forward and a shutdown defenseman. Dustin Penner, Rostislav Klesla, Kristian Huselius, Chris Phillips and Ryan Suter have been linked to the Canadiens. Canadiens GM Yannick Weber, Andrei Kostitsyn and Lars Eller, among others may be being used as trade bait. The Kings are after Ales Hemsky. Wayne Simmonds and Brayden Schenn may be available for a ‘top-line player’. Brad Richards will also interest in the LA Kings. It’s being said that Richards will only waive his no-trade if GM Joe Nieuwendyk insists. The Rangers would love to get Richards, but may be in a better position to trade for Hemsky, McCabe and/or Brad Boyes. Michael Del Zotto might be moved for right player. Del Zotto may have been in discussion in a deal involving Tomas Kaberle before he was dealt to Boston. John-Michael Liles is being “shopped hard” by the Avalanche.Aside for Klesla and Huselius, the Blue Jackets may be shopping Jakub Voracek. GM Scott Howson didn’t like what the Penguins wanted for Alex Goligoski. The Flames can’t afford Huselius, and could be looking for a gritty 2nd-3rd liner, Chris Neil could be an option.
- Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News: Teams like Pittsburgh, Washington or Los Angeles could be interested in Tim Connolly. Many people will be surprised if Connolly last the week. Matthew Barnaby adds via twitter: They can’t wait to get Connolly’s contract off the books.
- Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen: Senators forward Peter Regin suffered a shoulder injury on Saturday in a game against the Leafs and could be done for the season. “We won’t know more until the test,” he said. “It could be worse (than we first thought).”
- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks forward Scott Nicol is out with an upper-body injury. Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic practiced yesterday and could be in the lineup tonight. Kent Huskins is not likely to play.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Mike Brown and Colby Armstrong should be back in the Leafs lineup tonight on a line with Darryl Boyce. Joey Crabb and Christian Hanson could be healthy scratches. The Leafs might have to call up a defenseman as Brett Lebda has a big bruise on his leg after being hit with a slapshot.

Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL Rumors on February 22nd, 2011

- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Leafs have made some trade offers for defensemen, no names, and nothing close.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie doesn’t think the Maple Leafs would be interested in Paul Stastny, but John-Michael Liles is the type of player they are interested in, nothing close though. Raihan Hussain via twitter: Doug MacLean is reporting the Maple Leafs contacted the Avalanche about Liles, but the asking price is too high.

- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Even in Calgary, Bernstein is hearing the LA Kings are pressing hard for Ales Hemsky.
- Rob Rossi via twitter: Penguins source is saying the asking price for Ales Hemsky is huge.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Dallas Stars and Brad Richards have quietly been having talks, though there hasn’t been much progress. It’s more likely the Oilers will move Dustin Penner, Gilbert Brule, Jim Vandermeer and Ladislav Smid than Ales Hemsky. The Islanders are looking to trade Radek Martinek, Bruno Gervais and Zenon Konopka. Expect the Avalanche to make a pitch of Tomas Vokoun who’ll be a UFA in the off-season. Rangers are looking Filip Kuba. Scouts have called Sheldon Souray’s performance in the AHL as “brutal”. Even if Pascal Leclair plays again this season, his NHL career may come to an end as nobody may want to sign the UFA. The Canadiens, Sharks and Canucks have interest in John-Michael Liles.
- Bruce Garrioch via twitter: “If there are three teams interested in Ottawa RW Alexei Kovalev there are three GM’s who haven’t been watching him all year.”
- Eric Stevens of the OC Register: Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller was was placed on the IR earlier this week after another bout of dizziness and lightheadedness, is “believed to have a balance issue according to a team spokesman.” He is to meet a physical therapist tomorrow and team doctors have ruled out a concussion.
- Kent Youngblood of the Star-Tribune: Mikko Koivu injured his left hand blocking a shot in the 1st period of Friday’s game. It’s not known at the moment how long he’ll be out, more should be known tomorrow. If the Wild look to make a move for a center, they could look at, Jason Arnott, Tim Connolly or Rob Niedermayer.
- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: If the Sabres improve their play they may become buyers, but if they play like they did against the Leafs and Blues, they may look to the future. They have the expiring contracts of Tim Connolly and Steve Montador, and haven’t had any contract talks with either. Team captain Craig Rivet could be moved.

Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 19th, 2011
- Chris Stevenson of the Toronto Sun: One NHL scout has said that the Maple Leafs have been testing the waters with Phil Kessel’s name. “I was kind of surprised to hear his name as a possibility, but Kessel’s available,” the scout said. Another scout had heard his name mentioned, but others hadn’t. In an email, Burke “vehemently denied” that he was shopping Kessel.
- Capitals GM George McPhee has said to be dangling Alex Semin.
- The Avalanche are looking to a guy like Jonathan Bernier to be their ‘goalie of the future’.
- John-Michael Liles is available and Stevenson thinks the Avs may be able to get a 1st round pick.

- Will DePaoli via twitter: DePaoli doesn’t think Jason Arnott’s future will be decided until deadline day.
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Flames GM Jay Feaster on adding someone before the deadline, “Yes, if we can add in a way that makes sense, and by that I mean part of it will depend on the pricing,.”
- Sean Leahy via twitter: Jordin Tootoo has been cleared to return to the Nashville Predators by the league and PA.
Habs looking for top 6 and a Dman … Senators that are/might be available … White may be dealt soon … Flyers shopping Zherdev
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on February 17th, 2011
- David Pagnotta via twitter: The Canadiens are still looking for a top 6 forward, and adding Paul Mara doesn’t prevent them from adding another defenseman. Mara was a depth move with a cap hit of $210,000 for them. Still looking to add another Dman.
- Eric Engels via twitter: Canadiens fans may be excited that there team inquired about Tomas Kaberle and rumored Robyn Regehr, but they aren’t going in those directions.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators GM Bryan Murray,
“I’m not trying to trade everybody,” said Murray following the Kelly deal.
“I’m trying to trade some other people or move some other people, but it’s certainly not a housecleaning by any means.”
Top candidates to be moved by the Senators: Chris Phillips, Jarkko Ruutu, Chris Neil (Pens and Habs interested), and Chris Campoli. Possible Senators on the move: Milan Michalek, Filip Kuba and Matt Carkner. They’ll try to move Sergei Gonchar and Alex Kovalev.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: The Carolina Hurricanes are considering a trade offer for Ian White, and he could be moved in the next day or two, or not at all.
“Teams out there are looking for different things, and we have something to consider,” Rutherford said in an interview Wednesday. “This could go one way or the other.
“We have an offer, so we decided to pull [White] back for a day or two. But he could be back in the lineup this week.”
It’s not known which team made the offer, if it was a player-for-player deal or draft picks or prospects.
- Mike Gillis (Canucks GM) via twitter: Trade rumors involving the Canucks [yesterday] are completely false. (He is referring to the rumors that they were acquiring Ian White)
- Anthony Sanfilippo of DelcoTimes: Ville Leino missed last night’s game but should be able to go Friday according to Paul Holmgren. The Flyers opted to use Jody Shelly instead of Nik Zherdev in Leino’s place. The Flyers are trying to trade Zherdev, and if they can’t find any takers he might get waived.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: When talking about Ales Hemsky trade rumors he asked, “What am I worth?” Matheson thinks that when looking at the deal the Senators and Leafs got for Mike Fisher and Kris Versteeg, it would be more than that. A 1st round pick and another draft pick or good NHLer?
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: The Atlanta Thrashers have begun contract talks with Andrew Ladd, and should have a deal done by the trade deadline. Strickland doesn’t see the Avalanche doing much. The Blue Jackets will look to move a Dman for a forward. Penguins are looking for a forward, with minor rumblings that they’d move Alex Goligoski. Don’t expect anything from the Blackhawks. If the Sabres fallout of playoff contention they might move Jordan Leopold. A couple teams are looking at Blues forward Brad Winchester, including the Canucks. The Blues have made Ty Conklin available and will consider Eric Brewer who would consider waiving his no-trade clause for the right team.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater can’t see a contender interested in Avs goalie Craig Anderson.
- Scott Burnside and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Brunside doesn’t see the Flyers doing much more given their cap situation. The Lightning are looking for defensive help, and won’t give up a 1st or 2nd round picks in a trade. LeBrun doesn’t think the Hurricanes will move Joni Pitkanen unless the fall out of contention before the deadline. John-Michael Liles may be a fallback for the “failed Kaberle suitors.” Alex Kovalev could be a nice fit in Pittsburgh, maybe for a 4th or 5th round pick.

Bryan McCabe could return to the Panthers lineup Friday or Saturday. McCabe hasn’t been asked nor expressed interest in waiving his no-movement clause.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Haggerty loves the John-Michael Liles trade rumors to Boston, stating he’s a -17 with 1 assist in his last 11 games.

Flames-Canes trade was in works for awhile … Ryder to minors? Guerin to Pens? Caps won’t trade a goalie … Bruins having trouble with trades
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 18th, 2010
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Flames-Hurricanes trade had been in the works for weeks, before Brett Sutter’s arrest. Bob McKenzie reports that the Flames had to call the Hurricanes to see if they would still be interested in Sutter after his arrest. Vickie Hall via twitter: According to Jay Feaster, with the Mark Giordano signing there was no chance that Ian White would be re-signed.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Haggerty thinks Michael Ryder and his $4 million will be sent to the minors when Marco Sturm and Marc Savard return from LTIR.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: At the Lightning-Islanders game last night, Coyotes GM Don Maloney and their Director of Pro Scouting, as well as the Sharks Director of Pro Scouting (John Ferguson Jr.) and another scout.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: There is a good chance that Bill Guerin will join the Pittsburgh Penguins organization in an undefined role.
- James Mirtle via twitter: It looks like a Jonas Gustavsson versus Martin Brodeur matchup between the pipes tonight.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC Sports: The Maple Leafs are following Chicago’s use of Patrick Kane with the Nazem Kadri, keeping him on the wing and away from opponents top line. Last year the Avalanche were offering John-Michael Liles and his $4.2 million salary to anyone, he has 16 points in 17 games as of Tuesday. Capitals GM George McPhee said he won’t trade any of Semyon Varlamov, Michal Neuvirth or Braden Holtby. According to one GM speaking of the Boston Bruins, “No one’s interested in the first couple of players they are offering.” What about the third guy? “Yes, we’d have some interest, but the Bruins are not prepared to do that, yet.” Garth Snow said Scott Gordon’s firing was his call and not owner Charles Wang.
Colorado Defenseman Outlook … Lightning not good for Yzerman? Hamhuis a good fit in Minnesota
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 3rd, 2010
- John Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson doesn’t think Steve Yzerman will take the Tampa Bay Lightning GM job, as they are “set up to fail”. The Oilers should go after Dustin Byfuglien and his $3 million contract. They have 2 2nd round picks this year and prospect Riley Nash, that could be used in some sort of package. The Blackhawks will be looking to dump some salary this off-season.
- John Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Raffi Torres’ probably won’t be getting the nice contract he’d hoped for, as he was inconsistent with Buffalo down the stretch and was a healthy scratch in their final playoff game. The Predators will look to re-sign Patrick Hornqvist but probably won’t have the money for Dan Hamhuis. Hamhuis would be a great fit in Minnesota. Zbynek Michalek may look to join his brother Milan in Ottawa. Tom Poti, after taking a puck in the face in game 6 of the Cap-Canadiens series, required 4 plates to repair the damage. The Capitals probably won’t bring back Jose Theodore, Brendan Morrison and Shaone Morrisonn. They may also look at trading Tomas Fleischman, who despite a 51 point season, was a healthy scratch in the game the Caps were eliminated.
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: A reader asks Molinari of the possibility of the Pittsburgh Penguins going after Anton Volchenkov. Molinari thinks it would have to depend on what the Penguins want to do with Sergei Gonchar, Jordan Leopold, Mark Eaton, and Jay McKee. If they don’t want to pay Gonchar the big money, it could be a possibility.
- Terry Frei of the Denver Post: The Colorado Avalanche defensive corps outlook for next season. Ruslan Salei and Brett Clark’s combined $6.5 million salaries are most likley both gone. The 39-year old Adam Foote’s 2 year deal expires, but he could be back on a salary that is maybe less than the $3 million cap hit he had this year. They’d like to move John-Michael Liles but he has 2 years and $8.4 million left. Scott Hannan is at $4.5 million and would be hard to move at that number. Kyle Comiskey is at a friendly $600,000 so he will most likely be back. They will look to re-signing Kyle Quincey. They will mostly likely have a top 6 of Foot, Quincey, Liles, Cuminskey, and Ryan Wilson. Defensive prospects are Kevin Shattenkirk, Colby Cohen, Tyson Barrie, Stefan Elliott and Cameron Gaunce.

Ryan not going anywhere, Souray puts Devils on his list? Modin on the block? Injury news
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 30th, 2010
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: LeBrun talked to Ducks GM Bob Murray about the rumors that he might be trading restricted free agent Bobby Ryan. “Unequivocally, I’m not trading him,” Murray told ESPN.com on Friday. “My plan is to get him signed.”
- Mark Everson of the NY Post: Everson was told that Sheldon Souray might have put the New Jersey Devils on his list of teams he’d consider a trade too.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater thinks the Avalanche should trade Sheldon Souray for John-Michael Liles, straight up. I sure the Oilers could get more Souray than just Liles.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: There is a chance that the Sharks will be without Dan Boyle and Marc-Edouard Vlasic for tonight’s game. Both will be a game time decision.
- Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic: Coyotes winger Scottie Upshall left Thursday’s game with a ‘lower-body’ injury. The extent of the injury is not known yet. If it’s serious, they might have to look elsewhere for help. “Number 1, we’re just waiting to see if this is something significant, long term, then we probably have to dial up our search for another offensive player,” Maloney said.
- Aaron Portzline and Tom Reed: The Blue Jackets are 9 points out of the last playoff spot, and will most likely be sellers at the trade deadline. Raffi Torres and Milan Jurcina have been mentioned in the past, but you can add Freddie Modin to that list. Modin hasn’t been asked to waive his no-trade clause yet.
Around the Boards: Some under-achieving Avs, DUI for Chelios, Ference out 6 weeks, Burns Skating
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 7th, 2010
- Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post: The Colorado Avalanche continue to roll on, but there are several players that aren’t living up to expectations. “The Avs are getting next to nothing from Darcy Tucker, Marek Svatos, Ruslan Salei and Liles, whose combined salaries exceed $12 million”…. “John-Michael Liles produced an assist on a goal against the Islanders, but when I asked Sacco to evaluate the highly-paid defenseman’s performance, it’s seems to be no secret that the Avs would like to trade Liles to Mystery, Alaska, for a bag of pucks.”
- Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Talks between the Pittsburgh Penguins, Sergei Gonchar and Kris Letang are ongoing, but they don’t appear to be close to anything.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Confirmation that Henrik Zetterberg and Danny Cleary will return to the Red Wings lineup tonight.
- Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: After an impressive run at the World Juniors, earning the top defenceman of the tournament, Alex Pietrangelo earned himself a ticket back the OHL. Blues management felt that rather than play spot duty or be a healthy scratch, playing big minutes with Niagara was better for him.
- Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune: Minnesota Wild defencemen Brent Burns has been skating for the last 2 weeks. He is still awaiting medical clearance for his concussion, but there is hope that he is able to return soon.
- Nancy Marrapese-Burrell of the Boston Globe: Boston Bruins defenceman Andrew Ference will be out 6 weeks with a groin injury.
Around the Boards: More Ilya, Caps in 2011 Winter Classic? Trade Chips in Washington and Colorado
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 1st, 2010
- Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News: Richardson thinks that if the Thrashers are still in the playoff hunt, and have not re-signed Ilya Kovalchuk, they probably won’t trade him at the trade deadline. They could deal him after the season, and before the July 1st, similar to how the Panthers handled Jay Bouwmeester.
- Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post: The Capitals have a good chance of being one of the participants in the 2011 Winter Classic. One possibility could have them playing the Rangers at Yankee Stadium. A match-up with the Penguins in Pittsburgh is another.
- Corey Masisak of the Washingon Times: The Washington Capitals have a goaltending trading chip in prospect, Michal Neuvirth, that could bring in a piece or two at the trade deadline.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: The Avalanche have more than enough healthy Dmen, and have some decisions on who to sit, and may be who they could trade. One of Ryan Wilson, John Michael Liles, and Brett Clark could be watching the Avs games from the press box. They’d probably like to move Liles out of town, but his contract might be a problem.
