- Aaron Portzline via twitter: The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed RJ Umberger to a 5 year, $23 million contract extension. Umberger will get $5 million next year, with $4.5 million for the remaining 4 years. A $4.6 million cap hit. The first 2 years of the deal contain a no-trade clause, then a modified no-trade for the final 3 years. (Umberger stats at the bottom of the entry.)
- Katie Strang of ESPN: Rangers center Brad Richards may have a ‘minor’ groin injury, missing part of yesterday’s practice and is not skating today with his group.
- Philadlephia Flyers via twitter: The Flyers have signed 2011 8th overall pick, Sean Couturier, to an entry level contract.
- Dan Rosen via twitter: Rosen thinks that John Tavares has to be the next captain of the Islanders. BD Gallof doesn’t think that Tavares is the type to be a captain, that Mark Streit makes the most sense, followed by Kyle Okposo.

Free agent and contract updates on Schenn, Bogosian, Doughty, Marchand, Bailey, Turris, Tavares and Myers
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 14th, 2011
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: A source is saying that Luke Schenn and the Maple Leafs are close, and it “should be done by Friday.” Both sides have been negotiating for weeks. Medicals are schedule for the Leafs on Friday. Nick Kypreos via twitter: Kypreos confirms Koshan’s Report. Josh Rimer via twitter: Rimer is hearing at that it could be a 3 year deal around $4 million per season.
- Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian doesn’t see the financial precedent when it comes to the signing of his, Drew Doughty and Luke Schenn’s contracts.
“I’m in a little bit of a different boat than them,” Bogosian said after an informal skate with Jets teammates, Tuesday. “Obviously Doughty has had a couple of good years. I haven’t exactly had the greatest start to my career… but I’m still young and up to learning new things and looking forward to good things here in Winnipeg.”
- Arthur Staple of Newsday: As Islanders center John Tavares heads into the last season of his entry level deal he has been saying he wants to remain an Islander, and that wish may be coming true. They could have a long-term deal in place by the start of training camp.
“It’s not something I want hanging over the season and affecting the team,” he said Tuesday after an informal skate at IceWorks in Syosset. “I know I’m going to be here for a long time and I’d like it to get done.”
It is believed that they could be working a deal in the 5 or 6 year range.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: John Tavares and Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers could be close to signing contract extensions. Both deals could be in the 6 year range and around $5.5 million per season.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: If Drew Doughty signed the deal the LA Kings have on the table (7 years at $6.8 million per season), he’d be the 4th highest cap hit this season behind Shea Weber, Brian Campbell, and Zdeno Chara. Bob McKenzie via twitter: The Kings have been adamant that Doughty’s deal be at least 7 years and that it can’t be more than the $6.8 million cap hit of Anze Kopitar.
- Bob McKenzie via twither: McKenzie thinks Luke Schenn, Brad Marchand, Zach Bogosian and Josh Bailey will get signed by the weekend as dialogues are ongoing. Vibe from Doughty and Kyle Turris front are not as encouraging as not a lot is going on. Andy Strickland via twitter: Turris and the Coyotes are aways apart in negotiations, a guarantee that a deal gets done by the start of training camp.
- Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: There are rumors floating around that the Bruins are offering Marchand deals in the $2 million per season range while Marchand is looking for something about $4 million.
- Elliotte Friedman of CBC.ca: Large 2nd contracts will be a target when the next CBA negotiations begin. Friedman thinks that Turris should consider a 1 year deal and prove to the Coyotes that he deserves the big contract he desires.
Doughty rejects $61.2 million … Nothing new on Marchand talks … Parise and Devils will work on long term deal … Tavares commited to Islanders
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 9th, 2011
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty rejected multiple offers including a 9 year, $61.2 million contract. The $6.8 million salary cap hit would have been the same as Anze Kopitar. Dennis Bernstein via twiter: Kings GM Dean Lombardi is facing the reality that he may have to do a 5 year deal with Doughty (a la Stamkos) to get him signed and risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent at 27 years old. Doughty wants a shorter term and to be a UFA at 27. The Kings may have to do a 5 year, $35 million deal. Helene Elliott via twitter: Lombardi and Doughty’s agent, Don Meehan, have agreed to not discuss negotiations publicly, no deal appears imminent.
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: There is “nothing new” according to Brad Marchand on contract updates. “You know what, it’s how it goes sometimes and it’s been a long summer. I’m anxious to get something done.” He is still hoping to get a deal done by the start of training camp. Marchand’s agent, Wade Arnott, was the agent for Phil Kessel when he was with the Bruins. Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Neither side is wanting a holdout. Marchand is projected as the left winger on the 2nd line with Bergeron at center. If there is a holdout, there are plenty of players vying for the open spot. Zach Hamill is a natural center but may have to move to the wing. Ryan Spooner and Jared Knight could be in the mix but are more likely heading back to junior. Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: See the video at bottom of the entry.
- Dave Lozo via twitter: Devils winger Zach Parise said that both sides will keep talking about a getting long term deal done before the end of the season.
- Scott Burnside of ESPN: Islanders center John Tavares told ESPN that he’s committed to the Islanders.
“In terms of my contract being up this year, I don’t have any plans on leaving or what could happen,” Tavares said. “I’m committed to Long Island and the Islanders. They’ve been great to me. We have a great bunch of guys and I’d love to be a part of turning this around from where it was and bringing us back to credibility, respectability and being a team that’s constantly in the playoffs and competing for the Stanley Cup.”
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: Panthers RFA forward Shawn Matthias still remains without a contract, but he’s been working out with teammates. He’s been tendered a contract, so he is still property of the Panthers. The Panthers are offering a 2-way contract due to the competition at the forward position. “Yeah, I hoped it would have been done quicker,” he said. “I trust my agents, they are working on it. That’s what you have to have, trust in them. I really don’t know what’s going on. I’m staying out of it.”
- Sam Carchidi via twitter: Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger won’t be ready for the start of training camp, but he’s making strides.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: If the Blues don’t name a captain and instead go with only assistants, it’s because they see Alex Pietrangelo as their future captain.
- Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: Alexei Yashin has said that he’s ready to return to Yaroslavl.
- Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets have signed cener Kyle Wellwood to a 1 year deal worth $700,000.
Glencross re-signs with Flames … Boogaard receiving counseling before death … Brygalov would relish to be Flyer … Jagr’s 3 team NHL wishlist
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 16th, 2011
- Vicki Hall via twitter: The Calgary Flames has re-signed Curtis Glencross to a multi-year deal.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: If the NY Islanders arena project doesn’t take shape, it could be difficult to lock John Tavares up long-term as he may not want to re-sign with a team with a cloudy future. It would also be hard to bring in free agents as they would unsure as to where the team could be playing in 4 years after the Coliseum lease is up.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Derek Boogaard was receiving counseling from the league’s Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program in the days before his death. His brain has been donated by his parents to the Boston University Medical School who are doing research on brain disease in athletes.
- Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports: People close to Jaromir Jagr think he’ll return to the KHL next season, though Jagr speculated about 3 NHL teams that could be on his wishlist. Team sources at the World Championship indicated that the Montreal Canadiens are at the top of his wishlist, followed by his former teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers.
- Marc Antoine Godin via twitter: Regarding Jagr, a source has said that Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier hasn’t closed the door as completely as rumored since May.
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: A league source has said that Ilya Bryzgalov would be a perfect fit in Philadelphia. The source is close to Bryzgalov and added he would relish becoming a Flyer.
“He would love the adulation he’d get in Philadelphia,” the source said. “This is a big guy, who plays back in the net and can play a lot of games for the Flyers. Phoenix and the Flyers have had some talks this season about trades, including Jeff Carter.
“Phoenix needs some significant help up the middle with Kyle Turris. They’ve talked to Philadelphia about trading for Carter to achieve that. Maybe they do that. Philadelphia has to move salary. You need to clear about $5.5 million to bring Bryzgalov to Philly, if he’s their guy.”
Tomas Vokoun and Evgeni Nabokov are UFA’s and might interest the Flyers. Miikka Kiprusoff and Niklas Backstrom may also be of interest, but they would have to be acquired through trade.
Richards injury update … Oilers have $27 million to spend in off-season … Tavares wants to be an Islander … Boyle still out
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL Injuries, NHL News on March 8th, 2011
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards skated on his own yesterday in Dallas, and could practice with the team on Wednesday at the morning skate. Nicklas Grossman is still out with a hip injury, but is skating.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers currently have $32 million committed to 14 players next year, leaving around $27 million for 11 more players. They still need to re-sign Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid, but will still have lots of room for other free agents. They won’t go after high end free agents like Brad Richards but could look at the 2nd tier group, the Scottie Upshall type. They could be looking for a 2-way defenseman. They won’t spend to the cap ceiling, likely closer to the middle.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: John Tavares has heard rumors that he wants out of the Island, but that may not be the case. “I was aware of (the talk) and, a lot of times, I just ignore that stuff,” …“Obviously, when you are losing, it’s not easy,” Tavares said. “It’s a tough thing to go through. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love it here and don’t want to play here. “I love being a New York Islander.”
- Josh Yole of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins forward Aaron Asham has been symptom free from a concussion he sustained on Feb. 1st. He skated before practice yesterday, and may be able to return later this month. Brooks Orpik will be out another 2 weeks. Eric Godard is eligible to return after serving his 10 game suspension.
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle won’t be in the lineup tonight. Jason Demers had been taking Boyle’s spot on the power play, but Ian White was practicing with the unit yesterday. Devin Setoguchi was on the 1st PP unit with Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. Dany Heatley skated with Logan Couture and Ryane Clowe on the 2nd PP unit.
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: Bruins defenseman Steven Kamfer sustained a minor concussion last week, they hoped that he’ll only miss a week, but it’s likely to be more than that. In 2008, Kamfer was attached by a Michigan Wolverine running back and suffered a suffered a cracked skull, concussion and broken vertebrae. 3 months later he was knocked out by a punch from behind, then cross checked twice in the neck. Andrew Ference might be able to starting skating today or tomorrow.
- Edmonton Journal: Devan Dubnyk will start in net for the Oilers tonight, and Nikolai Khabibulin will likely get the start on Wedmesday.
Players with the worst plus/minus so far this season
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Opinion on January 28th, 2011
So the all-star break is upon us (yawn), and in honor this 4 day break, I decided to put together a list of the worst plus/minuses so far this season. I’m still amazed (and annoyed, on my fantasy team) that Kovalchuk leads this category. I know he doesn’t always focus on the defensive side of the things but….. Finding 4 San Jose Sharks is also a bit of a surprise. Maple Leafs defenseman/forward Brett Lebda is a funny case as he’s a -19 in 22 games, that’s terrible.

Isles could face a bigger problem … Moves in Oils future? Anderson, Foote leaves game … Leafs injury update
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on November 25th, 2010
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Things are not well on the Island and they potentially could get worse, LeBrun … “My biggest concern if I were an Islanders fan is what John Tavares and his powerful agent Pat Brisson (Crosby, Toews, Kane) will think once the star forward’s entry-level contract is up in July 2012. Your top priority right now must be to make sure you don’t lose his enthusiasm for wanting to stay in Long Island.” LeBrun thinks that the San Jose Sharks will go after a top 4 defenseman between now and the trade deadline.
- Darren Dreger of TSN: “Oilers’ GM Steve Tambellini insists the rebuild plan will not be altered and he isn’t in the market for a blockbuster trade.” Teams continue to ask about Ales Hemsky. Tambellini is looking to add some grit, a centerman, and a defenseman. They don’t want to deal top prospects for picks.
- ESPN: Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson left last night’s game after the 1st period with a groin injury. Adam Foote was also helped off the ice with a leg injury in the 1st period.
- Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Some internet talk that the Bruins could send down Brad Marchand and/or Jordan Caron when Marc Savard is ready to return, but Murphy thinks Daniel Paille could be the roster casualty.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Luca Caputi was returned to the Toronto Marlies. JS Giguere, Colby Armstrong, and Dion Phaneuf skated yesterday before Leafs practice. Ron Wilson said that Armstrong could be back next weekend, still would need to get clearance from doctors. Giguere could be back next week sometimes. Phaneuf is schedule to return mid-December.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Guillaume Latendress had 2 surgeries yesterday, one repairing a torn labrum in his hip, the other having a ‘bilateral sports hernia’ repaired. GM Fletcher thinks he’ll be back before the end of the season.
- Katie Strang via twitter: Mike Mottau will likely be out the Islanders lineup for 4 to 6 weeks.
Savard to undergo physical exertion test soon … Staal and Tavares skate … Rafalski out 3-4 weeks
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on October 13th, 2010
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com: Marc Savard will undergo a physical exertion test in the next few days. He’s been doing low-intensity workouts, and has been making slow, steady progress. If/when he passes the test, it would be at least 4-6 before he’d return to the Bruins lineup.
- Katie Strang via twitter: John Tavares felt good after yesterday’s skate, and skated again today.
- Rob Longley via twitter: Jordan Staal skated today by himself, but don’t read into it too much, he’s still a-ways-away.
- Joe Haggerty via twitter: Both Patrice Bergeron and Zdeno Chara have no movement clauses in their deals.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Brian Rafalski is out 3-4 weeks after having surgery on his left knee.
- Helene Elliot via twitter: Andres Lilja is unlikely to play with the Anaheim Ducks this weekend as he has to leave the US to get the proper visa/paperwork.
Jeff Finger waived … Tavares not flying with team … Several Players clear waivers … Maltby retiring
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 12th, 2010
- Michael Traikos via twitter: Jeff Fingers was placed on waivers today by the Toronto Maple Leafs and will be sent to the AHL Toronto Marlies when he clears waivers. Ron Wilson said “he’s not being buried.” TSN is reporting that Wilson has said that if someone gets hurt or struggles, Finger could get recalled.
Jeff Finger’s $3.5 million cap hit comes off the books for the time being. Brett Lebda appears healthy, and will take over the roll of 7th defenseman for the time being. The Leafs now have $4.8 million in cap space, $3.5 million from Finger, and $1.3 million from what they were under before.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: The New Jersey Devils will dress 16 skaters on Wednesday. 1 more than their last game.
- Chris Botta via twitter: John Tavares didn’t fly out with the New York Islanders today. Tomorrow they play in Washington, Friday in Pittsburgh, so most likely Saturday at home is the earliest return.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Clearing waivers today: Thomas Greiss (SJ), Jonathan Carlsson (Chi), Nolan Schaefer (Bos), and PL Letourneau-Leblond (NJ).
- James Mirtle via twitter: Detroit Red Wings Kirk Maltby will be retiring from hockey rather than reporting to the AHL. At some point, he’ll most likely take a position within the organization. Bob McKenzie reporting an announcement is scheduled for 5:00 pm, and expects him to be named a pro scout.
- Mike Heika and Scott Goldstein of the Dallas Morning News: Mike Ribeiro was arrested on Sunday on charges of public intoxication. Ribeiro said it was a personal issue and “It wasn’t a big thing, I wish there were cameras there and they could have seen what happened. … I just want to put that behind us today.”
Drury ready for Friday … Rangers interested in B. Richards? Tavares out still … Ducks not interested in Souray … plus more
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 12th, 2010
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers center Chris Drury should be ready to go for Friday’s home opener against the Maple Leafs. Drury has been out since September 20th with a broken finger. Erik Christensen suffered a groin and hamstring injury last night, so a roster move may not necessary if Christensen is placed on IR. If he’s not placed on IR, one of either Todd White ($2.376 million) or Tim Kennedy ($550,000) could be sent to the AHL, as both cleared waivers last week. Brooks thinks the Rangers could be interested in Brad Richards at some point this season, and would be interested in signing him long-term. John Tortorella, “I don’t want to jump the gun, but Step reminds me of a young Brad Richards in Tampa,”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: If injured Philadelphia Flyers forward Ian Laperriere is forced to retire due to his eye injury, his $1.16 million would still count against the cap for the next 2 years since he signed his contract after he was 35. I’m sure the Flyers would see if they could leave him LTIR for both seasons, therefore not counting against the cap, see Mike Rathje.
- The NY York Times: New York Islanders forward John Tavares sat out last night’s game, and will miss their next one because of a concussion. Test came back normal yesterday, and he’ll trying skating today and tomorrow.
- Eric Stephens via twitter: The Ducks are not interested in Sheldon Souray if he was put on re-entry waivers.
- Bryan Mullen of the Tennessean: The Nashville Predators have recalled goalie Mark Dekanich as a precaution if Pekka Rinne his not able to go due a ‘lower-body-injury’. Rinne hasn’t practiced the last 2 days, but feels better, and is day-to-day.
- Mark Emmons of the San Jose Mercury News: Thomas Greiss was placed on waivers by the San Jose Sharks on Sunday. I’d be surprised if no one claimed him, he carries a $550,000 salary.
- Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: The New Jersey Devils have put P.L. Letourneau-Leblond on waivers, and will be sent to the AHL if he clears. They are also expected to sign Adam Mair to a contract. Mair has been with the team on a tryout.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Kirk Maltby is expected to decide today if he’ll retire or report the AHL. If he retires, he’ll likely stay with the organization as a scout.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Newly acquired Andres Lilja is waiting a new work visa before he’s allowed to suit up for the Anaheim Ducks. They hope the he’ll receive it this week.
