Jonas Gustavsson Agrees to Extension with Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to a 2 year extension with netminder Jonas ‘the Monster’ Gustavsson. The contract hasn’t been signed yet, but the agreement will pay Gustavsson an average of $1.35 million per season.

Gustavsson played in 41 games in his rookie season, posting a 16-14-9 record, with a 2.82 GAA and .904 SV%.

Gustavsson had a bit of an up and down season, but his play improved when JS Giguere around trade deadline time. The $1.35 million cap hit is a good number for the Leafs, and is lower then originally rumored. The Leafs goalie tandem of Giguere and Gustavsson will earn $8.35 million next season with a total cap number of $7.35 million.

A Tribute To “Jiggy” From The Anaheim Ducks

“We would like to sincerely thank Jean-Sebastien Giguere for the class, dignity and professionalism he showed on and off the ice during nine memorable seasons with the Ducks.

Among those countless memories are a Conn Smythe Trophy in 2003, a Stanley Cup championship in 2007 and a number of franchise goaltending records.

Best of luck in Toronto, Jiggy.

Sincerely,
The Anaheim Ducks “ (Source: NHL.com/Ducks)

This statement is a show of class from the Anahiem Ducks to JS Giguere posted on NHL.com. In the wake of trading him to the Toronto Maple leafs on Sunday for Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake, the Ducks reached out to show to Giguere to show their appreciation and respect for the goaltender who brought the Stanley Cup to California.

There has been mixed emotions from the people I’ve talked to about this trade but I think this is a move that will help the Leafs, and more pointedly Jonas Gustavsson, in the future.

”The Monster” has shown some potential to be a NHL #1 goaltender but he needs a mentor he can respect to show him the ropes, and at 32 Giguere still has some quality years left to help achieve this end.

Brian Burke has certainly rolled the dice on this one but if “Jiggy” can return to even 85% of his former abilities it will be a deal worth doing. The plan going into this season was for Toskala to return to form after off-season surgery, and be traded at the deadline. At that point, the plan was for Gustavsson to take over as the future of the franchise. The problem is that Toskala ha struggled mightily all season and Gustavsson clearly isn’t ready for the work load.

It is true that Giguere will eat up a lot of cap space ($6.5 mil cap hit) but in getting the Ducks to take Jason Blake’s contract ($4 mil cap hit), the loss is negligable really. If you view it as a $2.5 mil loss next year and Gustavsson developes into a true #1 starter under Giguere’s guidance, it a mearly a monetary loss, and it’s common knowledge that the Leafs have plenty of that.

Kings interested in Lecavalier? Phaneuf to Atlanta or Philly? Messier the Rangers GM next season?

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
    • Talk that Dion Phaneuf was offered in a package for Ilya Kovalchuk. The Flyers are also said to be interested in Phaneuf but they have cap issues and would have to send money back to the Flames or they would have to find someone else to take on a big salary player.
    • Sean O’Donnell of the LA Kings could become available, and the Blackhawks have interest if they move Cam Barker.
    • Could be the last season for Glen Sather as the GM of the Rangers. It still amazes me that he hasn’t been fired yet after years of making bad decisions. Mark Messier could take over as GM.
    • The Oilers are finding it difficult to find a taker for Sheldon Souray and his $5.4 million cap hit. It won’t help that he hurt his wrist/hand in a fight with Jarome Iginla last night.
    • The Canucks and Panthers could be looking at Hurricanes center Matt Cullen.
  • Ken Campbell of The Hockey News: The LA Kings may be interested in Vinny Lecavalier, and they continue to be interested in Kovalchuk, but won’t bring in both. The Lightning reportedly asked for Jack Johnson, Wayne Simmonds, a prospect, and several draft picks. Atlanta asked for something similar for Kovalchuk.
  • JP Hoornstra of the LA Daily News: The Ducks have locked up Jonas Hiller for 4 years and $18 million. He’ll get $4.5 million a season. The Ducks will continue to shop JS Giguere in hope that they can shed his $7 million price tag for next season.
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com: Aaron Ward’s days in Carolina could be coming to end. Boston is one team that could be interested in bringing him in.

What do the Blackhawks do? Changes coming for the Flames and Oilers? Hiller wants assurance of #1 before resigning

  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Sassone looks at what the Hawks might do at the trade deadline. Do they add defensive depth, or risk messing with team chemistry and make a deal or two to help with their cap issue for next year, or do they go for it and go after a top rental player such Scott Niedermayer.
  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Brian Burke throws caution when it comes to making trades at the deadline, we say ‘the hell with it, trade away’. “”We (league GMs) make our mistakes as a group more on the trade deadline than we do the rest of the year,” said Leafs GM Brian Burke. “That’s historical and I don’t think it will change. The pressure (to win) doesn’t change. It’s unrelenting, unremitting. “Therefore, the temptation to add to your team or take from your team at the deadline, regardless of the price, is always there.”"
  • Chuck C of the Calgary Herald: After being spanked 9-1, and the with the continued offensive struggles, changes could be coming soon for the Calgary Flames.
  • Darren Greger of TSN.ca: Big changes are coming in Oil Country. Ethan Moreau, Robert Nilsson, Fernando Pisani, Sheldon Souray and Steve Staios have been mentioned weeks, but could be tough to move. Andrew Cogliano could also be on the on the move, but he could be the type of player to comeback and haunt the Oilers, as he is still young and has the ability to be a #2 center.
  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Jonas Hiller has solidified himself as the number 1 goalie in Anaheim at the moment, and now will be looking to be paid like it, as well as being reassured that he is the number 1. Problem for the Ducks is that JS Giguere is still under contract for next season at $7 million.  “I don’t want to just sign until I know that it’s possible that I’m a No. 1 goalie, [whether] if it’s here or if it’s somewhere else,” Hiller said.
  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: The Tampa Bay Lightning are expecting Paul Ranger to return to the club soon. Rangers has missed the last 3 months due to personal reasons.

Around the Boards: Kovalchuk talks positive, Malkin and Ovechkin returing tomorrow? Komisarek and Orpik out weeks

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers forward Robert Nilsson is in the doghouse and may find himself on the trading block. The Predators and possibly the Hurricanes could be interested in Nilsson, who has skill but has been inconsistent.
  • Chris McCosky of The Detroit News: Despite the rumors circulating that the Detroit Red Wings might be interested in trading for JS Giguere, GM Ken Holland says he hasn’t talked about any trades, nor does he expect to any time soon.
  • Jeff Klein of the New York Times: Thrashers GM, Don Waddell says the Ilya Kovalchuk’s negotiations have been ‘very positive’. It’s not noted if Ilya or his agent agree, but at least they continue to talk. There is still talk out there about Kovalchuk returning to Russia.
  • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Alex Ovechkin could return this weekend.
  • Mike Spellman of the Daily Herald: Marion Hossa has begun some little contact drills to test out his surgically repaired shoulder. He should begin full contact next week, and could see some game action during their current trip.
  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Brooks Orpik’s ‘lower body injury’ will keep him out the lineup for about 2 weeks, which is better than originally feared. Evgeni Malkin has been cleared for contact and could return on Saturday.
  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Leafs defenceman, Mike Komisarek will on the IR for about 3 weeks with a torn muscle in his quadriceps. Carl Gunnarsson was called up to take his roster spot. Ian White moved up to the number one defensive unit with Tomas Kaberle. Jeff Finger was paired with Francois Beauchemin, Luke Schenn and Garnet Exelby are the 3rd pairing.
  • Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: Milan Lucic is targeting next Thursday as a return date, Claude Julien is thinking at least a week to 10 days.

Around the Boards: Sedin and Kovalchuk set backs, S. Niedermayer on the move that the Deadline?

  • Matthew Sekerer of the Globe and Mail: Daniel Sedin was hoping to return to the Canucks on Tuesday or tonight, but a set back to his broken foot has pushed back the expected return day till next week at the earliest. In better Canucks news, Roberto Luongo will be starting tonight against the Red Wings.
  • Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Despite the Blackhawks`, David Bolland, expected to be out a couple months, the Hawks won`t put him on LTIR. GM Bowman won`t use the LTIR to clear cap space “because that would be money he’d have to shed when Bolland returns in February or March.“ They also don`t plan on trading for a replacement, as they are close to the cap.
  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Ilya Kovalchuk won`t be returning to the Thrashers lineup tonight as originally hoped.  His injured foot became sore while warming up for practice.
  • Eric Stevens of the OC Register: JS Giguere wants to be a number 1 goalie, and wants it to be in Anaheim. His comments about that he`d rather retire than be a back-up was suppose to be taken as sarcastic. “”I don’t regret what I said but it didn’t come out exactly how I wanted,” Giguere said. “I just wanted to say I’m not done. I want to compete. I don’t want to be written off. I’m still here and I wanted to battle and have fun.”"
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: If the Ducks are out of playoff contention around trade deadline time, Scott Niedermayer could see himself being dealt, and maybe to the Devils. “I think it’s a possibility,” Niedermayer said of being traded by the Ducks at some point this season. “Last year we were kind of in a situation where we were teetering and there was some talk and rumors. You start to think about it.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: The Stars are looking for a right-handed Right Winger and/or a Defenceman, the underachieving  Fabian Brunnstrom could be used as trade bait.

Around the Boards: Kovalchuk, Briere and Van Riemsdyk, Penguin’s Injuries, Weight out, Giggy to Wings?

  • Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Thrashers fans and Fantasy owners of Ilya Kovalchuk have a smile on their face this morning, as Kovalchuk took part in yesterday’s practice. He was on a line with Antropov and Afinogenov. Kovalchuk is 95% a go for Thursday. He’s been out 3 weeks so far, original timetable was 4-6 weeks.
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Both Daniel Briere and James Van Riemsdyk could be back in the lineup for Thursday’s Ottawa match-up. Ryan Parent and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen should also be back soon.
  • To go along with the Ducks JS Giguere to the Maple Leafs for Vesa Toskala, Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch thinks the Red Wings might have an interest in Giguere as they are not thrilled with the tandem of Osgood and Howard so far.
  • Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The injuries keep mounting up for the Penguins, as Brooks Orpik appears to be the latest Penguin injured. Orpik left last night’s game and joining Sergei Gonchar, Kris Letang,  Evgeni Malkin, Tyler Kennedy Max Talbot on the sidelines.
  • Arthur Staple of the Newsday:  Doug Weight’s upper-body-injury that he sustained on Friday will keep him out the lineup for 4-6 weeks. Kyle Okposo has been diagnosed with the H1N1 swine flu.
  • Mark Everson of the NY Post: Some of the New Jersey Devils forwards aren’t putting up the numbers they did in past season, and the blame may be on Jacques Lemaire’s systems. Well no #*$%, Lemaire’s ‘bore-the-crap-out-of-you’ systems will negate the skills out of anyone, see ‘Marion Gaborik’ and what he’ll do this year (if healthy).
  • Corey Masisak of the Washington Times: Brendan Morrison’s solid play so far this season may earn him a contract extension with the Capitals.
  • Jesse Rogers of ESPN: Blackhawks center David Bolland will be out 3 to 4 months following surgery on a herniated disc. This probably means that Patrick Sharp and/or Kris Versteeg trade rumors may slow down.
  • From CSN Washington: Mikael Nylander has cleared waivers, and reportedly has deals in the KHL, and is ready to move on … But  “We’re still exploring our options,” McPhee said. “I’d rather not elaborate right now. It is probably a better opportunity to talk about it tomorrow. I’d like to see how it goes today and then maybe we can discuss it tomorrow.”
  • Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Coyotes GM Don Maloney plans on scouting Chris Chelios on Friday as the AHL Chicgo Wolves play San Antonio …. Peter Forsberg might decide by the end of the week if/where he’ll be playing

Around the Boards: Habs Goalie Controversy, ANA-TO, EDM-TB Trades Coming? Wings Looking for Goalie?

  • Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Stubbs outlines the Habs goalie controversy between Jarolsav Halak and Carey Price after a strange twist with Halak`s representative, Allan Walsh tweeting:

“Interesting stat of the night … Price is 10W, 32L in last 42 starts. Hmm.”

    and later backtracked:

“It was a tongue-in-cheek comment not meant to be taken seriously, forgot it was Montreal and everyone loses a sense of humour,” he tweeted in reply.

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Toronto Sun: The Tampa Bay Lightning might be looking to move Andrej Meszaros. Meszaros makes $4 million so it might be difficult to move him. Not many teams can afford a $4 million underachieving Dman. Though Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune states the Edmonton Oilers have been scouting the Lightning in their quest to find some defensive depth. The Hurricanes have struggled terribly this season and might be looking to get younger. Ray Whitney (no-move clause) and Joe Corvo might be on the block.Dallas is looking to a big forward. The Detroit Red Wings haven`t been that happy with the play of goalies Chris Osgood and Jimmy Howard, and might be looking to bring someone in. Martin Biron maybe?
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Rick DiPietro is a few weeks away from returning, if he can stay healthy, Martin Biron will be on the move. As part of the deal with Biron signing with the Isles, it was put in place that he would be traded if/when DiPietro returned.
  • Curtis Zupke of the OC Register: Zupke on Randy Youngman`s article, both are bringing up the JS Giguere to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a deal that would involve Vesa Toskala. Giguere would be a `mentor`for Jonas Gustavsson, and is under contract until next season, making somewhere in the neighborhood of $6 million. Toskala`s $4 million contract expires at the end of the season. The Ducks would love to get out of Giguere`s contract, as Jonas Hiller has taken over the #1 duties. I`m not sure if Toronto would want to bring in a $6 million backup goalie/mentor.
