- Sam Carchidi via twitter: A Flyers official shot down the rumor that James van Riemsdyk was being traded to the Maple Leafs for Luke Schenn. “Not happening,” he said. If the Flyers make a deal it will be closer to the trade deadline. They have lots of interest in Ryan Suter and are not looking at him as ‘rent-a-player.’ The Flyers have about $4.2 million in cap room. Hurricanes defenseman Bryan Allen and Tim Gleason are on their list but not at the top.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke:
“I told Luke it’s not a guarantee that he wouldn’t be traded if something materializes, but we’re not in trade discussions with any team about him right now,” Burke said. “We haven’t offered him to anybody. I don’t know where the rumours started. I told him that’s not happening.”
Burke’s phone is ringing more frequently of late.
“We’re getting a lot of calls and we’re listening,” Burke said. “But that’s very different than offering a player. Fielding a phone call on a player is very different than making a phone call on a player.”
- TSN 1050 Podcast: Brian Burke talks trade rumors. (you might have to search the archive to find it if they add more podcast to their loop.)
- Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: 2 organizational sources confirm that the Flyers and Leafs have spoken. Dreger reported that Schenn has not offered in a trade, and that nothing is imminent.
- Kelly Friesen via twitter: Someone close to the Flyers organization told him that the van Riemsdyk for Schenn rumor has legs. Dustin Leed via twitter: Leed has been told that some discussion has taken place, but the Flyers would need Schenn + to move van Riemsdyk. Leed added that their first option is to keep him and seek a defenseman in another way.

- WGN Radio via twitter: Blackhawks Daniel Carcillo is out for the year for surgery on his ACL.

- Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs center Tyler Bozak crashed into the boards during practice yesterday and was not able to finish. His status for tonight won’t be known until today. Matthew Lombardi is close, and could possible take Bozak’s spot.
“We have to figure that out. We don’t have room right now unless we find out (Bozak) is hurt bad enough that he could go on IR, which is seven days,” Wilson said. “But if he is only to possibly miss one game if at all, I don’t know what we would do in that situation.”
- Brian McNally via twitter: The Capitals have put Mike Green on the IR retroactive to Nov. 11. The Caps are now able to add Cody Eakin. Green be able to come off the IR at any time.

Could Radulov return to Preds next year? Skinner to IR … Leafs call up Kadri … Robidas questionable … Giordano skates
Posted by Mark Easson in Fantasy Hockey News, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 21st, 2011
Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! Sports: Alexander Radulov on thoughts about returning to the NHL:
“I am not going to say anything about the NHL because actually I never closed the door on the idea of playing there. As far as Salavat Yulaev is concerned, I have a contract with the team for this year and the next. However, it actually contains [a clause] with a possibility of early termination… I am not ruling out anything. Because if there are offers, we will consider them. But overall I am happy with everything at Salavat. You always want to play for a team that is challenging for something. You want to play to win, right?”
Radulov has 1 year left on his entry level deal with the Predators. There was an instance years ago involving Alexander Semin, with the Capitals tearing up the last year of his contract and signing him to a two year deal. Could the same be done for the Predators.
Mark Spector via twitter: The Hurricanes have put Jeff Skinner on the IR and called up Riley Nash.
David Alter via twitter: The Maple Leafs have called up Nazem Kadri, and put Dupuis on the IR. Maple Leafs lines: Lupul-Bozak-Kessel, Frattin-Grabo-Kulie, Kadri-Connolly-MacA, Steckel-Boyce-Crabb, extras, Lombardi,Orr,Rosehill

Reimer’s mom speaks about his injury … Nabokov and Leafs ties … Markov travels with team … Mueller could return tonight … Backlund getting close
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 10th, 2011
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Sidney Crosby’s status for Friday may or may not be addressed after practice today.
- Chris Botta via twitter: Botta suggests Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson could be reunited with goalie Evgeni Nabokov but wonders if the Islanders would trade a quality goalie to a team in the Eastern Conference for a draft pick or iffy prospect.
- BD Gallof via twitter: The 2nd round pick that the Islanders may be interested in getting for Evgeni Nabokov is “likely a conversation starter or a dealmaker cost.” Gallof warns Islanders fans that Nabokov won’t yield the team an impact player, a small deal at best.
- Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star: From James Reimer’s mother on his injury:
“He looks clear. His eyes look fine. But he says he still has that nagging headache,” Marlene said. “I think his doctor finally said, ‘Let’s take you off the ice and see if it improves.’ … I’m hoping there’ll be some good news pretty soon.”
“That’s the frustrating part for us — not knowing what it is, and why they’re not calling it a concussion when they say ‘concussion-like symptoms,’” Marlene Reimer said. “Like, how is that not a concussion? … The initial test showed him to be clear of a concussion. But as it goes on, it’s kind of mystifying. He’s okay some days. And some days he’s definitely not okay.”
Reimer’s mother added that he’s had “several” concussions and he suffered whiplash last season with the Marlies. His first concussion came when he was 16 years old.
- Jesse Spector of the Sporting News: If the Blue Jackets decide to replace coach Scott Arniel, former Kings and Blues coach Andy Murray likely won’t be interested in the position as he’s happy coaching at Western Michigan. “There were NHL opportunities before, but I said no because I want to be here at Western Michigan,” Murray told Sporting News. “The Columbus one is new to me. I can’t talk to that situation, I haven’t talked to anybody from Columbus.” Former Senators coach Cory Clouston is a possible candidate for the position.
- Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov accompanied the team on their flight to Arizona, and could begin practicing with the team. Andrei Kostitsyn and Scott Gomez are day-to-day, and could be ready to return to the lineup before the end of the week.
- Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Peter Mueller could return tonight. He’s been out 12 games with post-concussion symptoms. He practiced on a line with Matt Duchene yesterday and will be re-evaluated this morning. JS Giguere will get the start in net. Lines at yesterday’s practice: Mueller-Duchene-Jones, Landeskog-O’Reilly-Kobasew (no Winnik), Lindstrom-Stastny-Hejduk, McLeod-Galiardi/McClement-Porter.
- Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune: Blackhawks defenseman Steve Montador was inserted on the 2nd power play unit. They are currently 5 for 57 on the man advantage. Center Dave Bolland is questionable for tonight’s game after taking a puck off the foot in their last game.

Flyers in no rush to call up Schenn … Doughty to IR … Hemsky resting for 2-3 weeks … Kesler skating hard … Some starting goalies tonight
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 17th, 2011
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: The Flyers are in no hurry to bring Brayden Schenn up from the AHL as he’s refining his game and there is a logjam on their roster. “When it’s the right time, he’ll be here,” general manager Paul Holmgren said on Sunday. “He’ll continue to play for the Phantoms for a little bit, anyway. I’m not sure, lineup-wise, where he’d fit in with the Flyers right now.” Blair Betts was placed on LTIR. Zac Rinaldo could be sent down when Jody Shelley finishes his 5 games suspension. They would have just enough cap space to recall Schenn at that point. If/when they do recall him, he could place him on the 3rd line with Sean Couturier and move Matt Read to the 4th line. It appears that Courturier will stick with the Flyers for the year.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: The LA Kings have put Drew Doughty on the IR. He’s expected to be out 7 to 10 days with a shoulder injury. The Kings have recalled Slava Voynov from the AHL.
- Joanne Ireland of the Edmonton Journal: Ales Hemsky will be resting his sore right shoulder for 2 to 3 weeks. It does not involve the labrum that was repaired last March. Ben Eager is expected to play his first game this week. Ryan Whitney should be returning soon too.
- Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward Ryan Kesler skated hard yesterday for an hour without teammates. It’s not known exactly when he’ll return, but he is entering the 10 to 12 week window.
“It’s smart for me to take my time now and let everything heal. I’m not a guy who plays on the perimeter, I want to get in there and battle. I’m getting closer but obviously I still feel it [hip] at times out there — just certain movements I don’t feel comfortable doing yet. I’m not going to come back until I feel comfortable or I’m 100 per cent.”
Oct. 26th or Oct. 28th could be possible dates.
- Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Unconfirmed reports are that Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov will resume practicing next week.
- Pens Inside Scoop via twitter: Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, Brooks Orpik and Dustin Jeffrey didn’t travel with the Penguins to Winnipeg.
- David Pollak via twitter: Sharks goalie Antti Niemi will get his first start of the season against the Ducks tonight.

More on Belak … Byfuglien arrested … Kugryshev back to Russia … H. Sedin has sore hip … 10 “under-the-radar” players
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on September 2nd, 2011
- Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star: Two people who knew Wade Belak said that he did suffer from depression and that he took medication to treat it. Belak’s widow released a statement asking “that everyone remember Wade’s infectious sense of humour, his caring spirit and the joy he brought to his friends, family and fans.”
- Mark Seidel via twitter: Seidel says that Belak did not kill himself and that “any suggestion to the contrary is simply wrong.” In time the truth will come out. He can’t say much about the death, but believes it will be “ruled a horrible accident” when all said and done. He apologizes for the vagueness.
- Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun: Special assistant with the NHLPA Mathieu Schneider said on the radio that people should stop jumping to conclusions regarding Wade Belak’s death. Schneider said it’s “dangerous and hurtful,” especially to his family, to speculate why he ended his life. Buffery lists a bunch of athletes (not just hockey players) who have taken their lives in the last year.
- Ed Tait and Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien was arrested late Wednesday night on “probable cause for third degree boating while intoxicated and the refusal of a blood or urine test.” He was released from jail 2:23 Thursday morning. He was booked weighing 286 pounds, up from his approximate 245 pounds playing weight last year.
- Ansar Khan of MLive: Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall is in the final year of his contact, has only played with the Wings, and would like to keep it that way. “Everyone knows I like it here a lot,” Kronwall said. “I want to stay. Hopefully, they want me to stay as well. So whenever they feel it’s the right time to start negotiating we’ll be ready for it.” The Wings will likely start contact talks with Kronwall soon.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Capitals prospect Dmitri Kugryshev is heading back to Russia after playing last year in the AHL. His deal is not the ‘rent’ type, he’ll be signing a valid contract with CSKA. The Capitals will retain his rights.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Andrei Zyuzin wanted to play in the NHL this year, but declined an offer from the Sharks. Zyuzin’s agent said that contact was for well less than a $1 million and he wanted more.
- Gord McIntyre of the Vancouver Province: Cancucks forward Henrik Sedin’s status may be up in the air, more will be known when he skates next week. “I don’t think it [Henrik's sore hip] was too bad, but he felt he needed some time off.”
- Scott Burnside of ESPN: Burnside mentions 10 “Under-the-radar” players who could make an impact this season: Alexei Ponikarovsky (CAR), JS Giguere (COL), Jakub Voracek (PHI), Anthony Stewart (CAR), Andrew Cogliano (ANA), Ian White (DET), James Neal (PIT), Niclas Bergfors (NASH), Mathieu Garon (TB) and Roman Hamrlik (WAS).
- James Mirtle via twitter: David Koci has been invited to the Jets training camp on a tryout.
- Martin Lunden of Swedish Oil by dohfOs: Oilers 2011 1st round pick Oscar Klefbom had his leg cut that required 10 stitches. When the stitches were removed, it was discovered that it was infected. He is on penicillin which prohibits him from playing.
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators GM David Poile said defenseman Francis Bouillon “will probably not be ready for camp.” Mike Fisher is still recovering from shoulder surgery. “I would say we’d probably go a little bit slower with (Fisher) going into training camp to make sure he’s ready and 100 percent going into the season,” Poile said.
Bettman’s press conference break down … Bettman contacted True North about Coyotes … Giguere an option for Leafs … Blues, Wings notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on June 2nd, 2011
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: LeBrun breaks down Gary Bettman’s press conference. Re-alignment will wait another year, and they will look at all kinds of possibilities. The NHL may more towards a more balanced schedule, each team playing each other at least twice. Though Bettman wouldn’t confirm, re-alignment may have been delayed to see how the Phoenix situation unfolds. 2011-12 NHL schedule should come out at the end of June. Bettman said that if the True North and Atlanta sale didn’t happen on Tuesday morning, it may not have happened. In the next collective bargaining talks, drug testing may get tougher. NHLPA’s exectutive director, Donald Fehr, expects CBA talks to begin next winter. Bettman says it makes sense to wait until the NFL, NBA, and MLB have ironed out there CBA’s before the NHL talks about theirs. Bill Daly said that next year’s salary cap could be as high as $63.3 million. Rule 48 could get expanded, will be discussed at next weeks GMs meetings. No update on participation in the 2014 Sochi Olympics or a return of the World Cup. Bettman on Phoenix,
“The city of Glendale stepped up and said they want the team to stay another year while they try to complete the sales process with us and will be funding the losses,” Bettman said. “Any suggestion that the league is funding this club or carrying the burden is not true. Last season, the city of Glendale did it. … Hopefully the club will be sold in due course, and there will be a new owner in there to start turning things around.
“You have a city in Glendale that built the building and has invested in it and wanting the club to stay there. As long as they’re prepared to carry the burden of doing this while we try to effectuate a solution, there’s no reason to move.”
- Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun: Gary Bettman approached True North about buying the Phoenix Coyotes before the 2009-10 season. “It was too late in the year to consider it for the fall of 2009,” Chipman told the Winnipeg Sun. “Pulling together in that time frame was not realistic.” The NHL bought the Coyotes that fall. “Now they owned the team and were looking for a solution in Glendale, and would we consider it?” Chipman recalled the league asking. “The answer was yes.” In May 2010 they met again. Chipman figured out the new NHL economics could work in Winnipeg. They had an agreement in principle but were the backup plan. If Glendale hadn’t decided to agree to pay $25 million in loses before last season, the Coyotes might have moved north.
- Chris Johnston in the Globe and Mail: J.S. Giguere has moved out of his Toronto home, and isn’t sure if he’ll be back. Six weeks ago he had his 2nd sports hernia surgery. Burke confirmed in an email that Giguere still remains an option for the Maple Leafs. Giguere would love to return to be re-signed by the Leafs,
“I would love to, but I don’t know what the management have in mind,” said Giguere. “I feel like I could be a good fit in Toronto working with (James Reimer). It’s going to be a tough season for him next year having that pressure of coming back to Toronto. We all know that all the journalists when we go back to camp are going to be after him — asking him questions and stuff like that.
“I think I can be helpful to him. I have no doubt that he can handle it himself, but I think a veteran presence might help him a little bit.”
- Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: If the Devils are interested in having Ken Hitchcock coach the team, they should contact the guy. “I haven’t heard anything from New Jersey,” said Hitchcock. “I don’t know what’s going on with New Jersey.” Minnesota and Dallas have already asked the Blue Jackets for permission to speak with Hitchcock. Hitchcock has let it be known his interest in hearing from Lou Lamoriello. “I’ve said that before,” Hitchcock said. “I know the people that coached for him very well. I knew Pat (Burns), obviously, very well. I know Brent (Sutter) very well and I know Jacques very well. Coaches talk.”
- Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators assistant coach Peter Horachek confirmed that he interviewed with the Dallas Stars this week.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: With Patrik Berglund locked up for 2 years, the Blues are expected to turn their attention to T.J. Oshie. Strickland thinks they will sign Oshie to a 1 or 2 year deal and around $500,000 less than Berglund (Berglund signed a 2 year for $4.5 million). Strickland also mentions he expects the Blues to re-sign Matt D’Agostini to a 1 year deal. Roman Polak could get a raise to $2 million from the $1.1 million he made last year. The Blues may be forced to give Nikita Nikitin a one-way deal to keep him from heading to the KHL. Talks with Ben Bishop should begin in a few weeks.
- Bill Roose of DetoritRedWings.com: Red Wings GM Ken Holland indicated that he would like to re-sign both Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller.
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings have met with Jonathan Ericsson’s agent, “a step in a long process. We’ll talk again, but negotiating a contract takes time.” They would like to sign him to a multi-year deal, Ericsson rejected one around Christmas time. He’ll be looking for a raise from the $1.25 million he made last season.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: The Sovetsky Sport is reporting that Capitals prospect Evgeny Kuznetsov signed a 1 year deal with Traktor of the KHL and remain in Russia for another year. The Capitals are “fine” with the decision as they felt after they drafted him that he’d need 2 years of development before he’d be ready for the NHL.
Rangers should offer pick for Richards … Avs goalie options … Penguins start negotiations … Flames hope to re-sign Tanguay … Gunnarson could be trade bait
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Free Agents, NHL News, NHL Rumors on May 24th, 2011
- Greg Brady via twitter: Sources tell Brady the earliest the Stanley Cup Finals would start would be next Monday. There will be no games on this Saturday regardless.
- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: If the Rangers wait until July 1st to go after Brad Richards, they’ll have steep competition in Toronto and Los Angeles, and the price may go up. Brooks thinks the Rangers should make an offer to the Stars before July 1st, so Richards an get acquainted with the organization, and they could get full info on his concussion this past season. Brooks thinks the Rangers should offer the Stars a 2nd round pick (#57) for Richards.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Dater doesn’t think the Avalanche will offer any a goalie a contract in the $5-6 million per season range. Free agent goalies in that range are Ilya Bryzgalov and Tomas Vokoun. Other possible goalies could be: Josh Harding – risky, JS Giguere – too many miles, Marty Turco – no thanks, Chris Osgood – pass. The trade route could be an option but comes with a price: Jonathan Quick, Jonathan Bernier, or Cory Schneider – all expensive. If they go after Vokoun, Dater would only offer a 3 year deal worth $10 million. Peter Budaj won’t be back, and they can’t go into the season hoping Brian Elliott is the answer.
- Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The Penguins have started negotiations with free agents Pascal Dupuis and Mike Rupp. Dupuis, 32, had a cap hit of $1.4 million last year. Rupp, 31, had a $825,000.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: The Penguins have begun talks with Craig Adams. Nothing is imminent but it’s possible that they could get a deal done this week.
- Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald: Flames GM Jay Feaster said on the radio yesterday that he has confidence the Flames will re-sign winger Alex Tanguay. “We believe we can,” the general manager said on NHL Live. “We do want to get him signed.” Tanguay signed a 1 year deal worth $1.7 million last year, and recorded 22 goals and 69 points. The Flames have 17 players under contract for next year with a cap hit of $55.8 million with an expected cap around $62.2 million. Ales Kotalik and his $3 million salary could be off to the minors next season. The future of Niklas Hagman and his $3 million is also in doubt. The Flames hope to re-sign backup goalie Henrik Karlsson. They have 4 UFA defenseman, Anton Babchuk ($1.4 million), Adam Pardy ($700,000), Steve Staios ($2.7 million) and Brett Carson ($500,000). Brendan Mikkelson ($687,500) is a RFA.
- Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: With the strong play of Maple Leafs prospects Jesse Blacker (Owen Sound) and Jake Gardiner, Carl Gunnarson could be vulnerable as Brian Burke continue to look for a number 1 center.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: St. Louis Blues prospect Vladimir Tarasenko has decided to spend another year in the KHL. Update: “Sibir GM tells SovSport the Blues made an “exclusive offer” to Tarasenko “like no other…guaranteeing he’d play.” “Sibir GM to Sovsport about the Blues’ offer to Tarasenko: “We had no idea the Blues wanted [Tarasenko] to come so bad. But it’d be better for him to play 1 more year in Russia before moving to the NHL.”
- Joe Yerdon via twitter: Doug Weight is expected to announce his retirement today.
Sunday morning rumors and notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on March 20th, 2011
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Coyotes know they need to re-sign Ilya Bryzgalov, but how much can they afford. He currently is making $4.25 million, and they may not be able to go higher than $5.25 million per season. Keith Yandle will also be looking for new deal, and he could jump from $1.3 million to the around the $4 million mark.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson still hasn’t ruled out returning to the lineup this year. Alfie has been rehabbing his back, and hopes to avoid surgery. Sens GM Bryan Murray started contract talks with goalie Craig Anderson last week, nothing is imminent.
- Jim Souhan of the Star Tribune: Wild defenseman Brent Burns won’t be a free agent until after next season, but if GM Chuck Fletcher thinks that he is not worth around $6 million a year in an extension, he may have to look at trading him. He may be a valuable trade assest. Souhan mentions Zach Parise, who’s a RFA, and may have difficulty working out a deal with New Jersey.

- Jesse Spector of they NY Daily News: Sean Avery has been a healthy scratch in 2 of the last 3 Rangers games, and may not fit into the Rangers future plans. Avery has 1 more year on a $15.5 million deal. Dallas and the Rangers are each paying half his contract. “I’m just trying to come every day and work on my game, work on my conditioning,” Avery said after a morning workout in Greenburgh. “I can’t control what happens. I can only control what I’m gonna do. So I really didn’t put a lot of attention on thinking about (lineup status). I just came in ready to work.”
- Chip Alexander via twitter: Sharks forward Logan Couture injured his leg last night, but later tweeted that he should be back soon.
- Gene Wang of the Washington Post: Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said yesterday that goalie Semyon Varlamov will return sometime in the next week. Mike Green will likely skate on Monday, and will be day-to-day. He’s missed 17 of last 19 games with a concussion.
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: If JS Giguere gets a contract for next year, he’ll likely have to take a about a $6 million pay cut. He makes $7 million this year, and would likely get a deal around $1 million.
- Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Strickland provides a list of 10 reasons that the St. Louis Blues are a good buy.

- Darren Dreger via twitter: Seems that due to the high asking price for Zenon Konopka (a 2nd round pick), the Islanders may want to re-sign him. GM Garth Snow hasn’t talked about a contact extension for Konopka, and will reevaluate at the end of the season.
