- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Penguins sent a news release out yesterday that Sidney Crosby will miss the next 2 games. He didn’t feel good after taking a hit on Monday against the Bruins.
“He saw Dr. Micky Collins of UPMC today and took an ImPACT test, which showed no problems. However, we all think it’s best that he sits out the next two games as a precaution,” Pens GM Ray Shero said in a release.
“We’re being cautious and keeping in mind he was off for a long time,’’ Shero later told ESPN.com via text message before a flight Wednesday evening. “Take a step back here and see how he feels in a few days.’’
Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets will probably trade Derick Brassard at some point. His career has stalled in Columbus and his agent sounded off on the coaching staff. Brassard has been a healthy scratch for 8 of the last 12 games. His trade value is not high at the moment. His $3.2 million cap hit may look better as the season goes on.
- Pierre LeBrun chat on ESPN: LeBrun thinks if/when the NHL does decide to expand, another Toronto team, Quebec City and Seattle could work. Devils winger Zach Parise is not available for trade at the moment, but that could change later. Bobby Ryan could go back on the trade market if the Ducks continue to struggle. If Parise does become available, the Kings would be interested. Flames GM Jay Feaster wants to blow up the team but he has a dozen no-trade clauses to deal with.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Kings Alec Martinez is fully cleared and is able to return to the lineup when ever the coaches decide to insert him. Winger Justin Williams status for today is not known, he took a shot off his hand. Willie Mitchell’s status for tonight could be decided this morning. Murray did say that both Martinez and Mitchell won’t return tonight. Center Mike Richards hasn’t skated since last Thursday: Murray said: “Richards is progressing. That’s all I can say. That’s all I know, really. He’s in every day, riding the bike, getting more acclimated, getting exercise and a feel for his own self.’’
- Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun: Canucks winger David Booth sprained his MCL on a knee-on-knee hit from the Avs Kevin Porter, and will be out 4 to 6 weeks. Coach Vigneault confirmed that Roberto Luongo will start in net tonight in Montreal. Bob McKenzie via twitter: Porter has a hearing with Brendan Shanahan today for the hit.
- Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Maple Leafs winger Colby Armstrong is about a week away from returning from his high ankle sprain. “I had no clue what it would take,” said Armstrong. “It’s a battle. It’s a lingering bitch of an injury. But as soon as they let me go, I can’t wait to get out.”
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets winger Kristian Huselius will be out weeks with a groin injury. He’s been out 68 of the last 92 Blue Jackets games.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Ray Emery will start in net for the Blackhawks against the Islanders.
- Tom Gulitti via twitter: Martin Brodeur will start in net for the Devils against the Senators.
- Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton could be looking at another suspension after his hit on Hurricanes Alexei Ponikarovsky. Do you think he’ll get suspended? How many games?
Devils win Draft Lottery, move to #4 … Oilers would listen to offers for #1 … Sens want to move up … Blue Jackets could trade #8 … Leafs could trade one of their top picks
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL News, NHL Rumors on April 13th, 2011
- NJ Devils win the Draft Lottery, move up from 8th to 4th. The Oilers will pick 1st overall. The Avalanche will get the Blues 11th pick as part of the Johnson and McClement for Stewart and Shattenkirk trade. Mock draft at myNHLdraft.com.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini on trading the 1st overall pick, “I will always listen, but this pick is significant in building our organization. I highly doubt we would do it,” he said.
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Ottawa Senators dropped to 6th in the draft, but GM Bryan Murray wouldn’t mind moving up in the draft. He doesn’t think the Oilers or Avalanche will move their picks (numbers 1 and 2) but he’ll get in touch with the Panthers (#3), Devils (#4) and Islanders (#5) to see if they’d be interested. They have Predators 1st round pick, and 3 2nd rounders. “If there is a guy that we like, and he’s still there at No. 3 or No. 4, we’ll make overtures to those teams to see if they’re interested in talking.”
- Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Brian Burke would consider trading one of the Leafs 2 1st round picks (Bruins and Flyers) and the 2nd, and is willing to trade one of the high picks to move up or get a foward. “There are no headliners in this draft, no Ovechkins, no Sedins,” Burke cautioned. “There are good players, but we like the depth, that’s why we’re going to keep two picks.”
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets dropped to the 8th overall pick, and GM Scott Howson has said already that he’d be open to moving the pick for immediate help.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: It looks like the Maple Leafs will head into next year with James Reimer and Jonas Gustavsson as their goalies.
“We’re confident James Reimer can handle not only the physical workload,” Burke said, “but the pressure-cooker workload of being a starting goaltender in a Canadian market.”
“We are confident at this point that we want to give the Monster (Gustavsson) a chance,” Burke said. “He has not had a chance, due to physical issues, to show us what he can do. I think this guy is a legitimate NHL goaltender and he needs to be given a chance.”Signing a veteran goalie is not a priority at this moment according to Burke.
- CP in the Toronto Star: Burke top priority this off-season will be identify a #1 center and agrees with Ron Wilson’s that the Leafs could be “two or three pieces” from being a cup contender. Brad Richards name is continue to be front and center. He could also go the trade route to get his #1 center, but teams are usually relecant to part with those types of players.
- Rich Hammond of the LA Kings Insider: Kings winger Justin Williams took part in some contact drills, and if he plays in Game 1 is up to him according to Terry Murray. If he is able to go, he’ll be on one of the top 2 lines.

- Andy Strickland via twitter: Strickland spoke with Andy Murray, and he has no interest in coaching in the KHL.

Afternoon rumor roundup, roster notes and starting goalies

- Darren Dreger of TSN: Trade discussions are heating up. The Blue Jackets may be the closest to making a big deal. Steve Mason, Jakub Voracek and Rostislav Klesla are believed to be getting some interest. A top center and defenseman are of interest to the Jackets. Dale Tallon and Pierre Gauthier spent some time talking before last night’s game, though Tallon said no groundwork was laid. Ray Emery has drawn interest from 3 teams, with the Ducks and Flyers as 2 of them. Teams could make a move in the next 48 hours.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Mike Smith has cleared waivers and is expected to be assigned to the AHL.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Ray Emery’s agent JP Barry, “We are now exploring all possibilities and will have to make a decision relatively soon.” Bob McKenzie via twitter: Wherever Emery signs, he’s likely to start off in the AHL.
- Andy Strickland via True Hockey: The LA Kings and soon to be UFA, Justin Williams, have talked contract extension. Williams may be looking for a multi-year deal in the $4.5 million range, which might be out the Kings range.

- Allen Panzeri via twitter: Jason Spezza has been practicing on a line with Alfredsson and Foligno and appears to be ready to go for Saturday.
- Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: Pavel Datsyuk had hoped to return on Friday, but Babcock said it might not be until next week.

From GM Chuck Fletcher, “trying to make the playoffs with this group.” There has been no talks of moving any of their potential UFAs. Though he wouldn’t mind giving his team a boost, he won’t mortgage their future. Marek Zidlicky is 2 weeks away from practicing.

- James Mirtle via twitter: Mike Brown will be out a couple weeks with an upper-body injury.

Edler out 8-10 weeks … Trade decision coming for Panthers … ‘Hawks GM talk trade deadline … LA Kings notes
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on January 28th, 2011
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: Canucks defenseman Alex Edler will have microdiscectomy procedure on his back Monday to repair a tear in a disc, he’ll be out 8 to 10 weeks. This should allow Sami Salo to return to the lineup (if he’s able to) before the playoffs with the team having to make a roster move to accommodate his salary. It may also allow the Canucks to add a penalty killer if they put him on LTIR. Keith Ballard’s role should increase. Andrew Alberts and Aaron Rome should return a week to 10 days after the break.
- George Richards of the Miami Herald: The Florida Panthers are getting close to the time they’ll need to decide if they are buyers or sellers. The Panthers don’t have many unmovable contracts, and could look to acquire draft picks and prospects. They have said they would like to re-sign Tomas Vokoun but that could have been done in an attempt to drive up the trade price. Players who might draw some trade interest are Bryan McCabe, Cory Stillman, Chris Higgins and Radek Dvorak. Guys like Stephen Weiss and David Booth might be there for the pickings if the offer is right.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika doesn’t think the Stars will trade anyone off their roster in an attempt to improve it. Heika was asked if he thinks that Brad Richards would stay even without new ownership, “It’s difficult to get into his head. If they win the Cup and don’t have a new owner, he might stay. If they lose in the first round and don’t have a new owner, he might go.”
- Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald: Comments from Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman on the upcoming trade deadlines,
“We’re not saying we’re going to wait a month, if there’s a deal to be made over the next two weeks. Things star to pick up around now, and between now and the next four or five weeks is when it all happens.
“You’re always going to look for depth because we’ve been fortunate and had a good run here with health on the back end. You look around and there are teams that are missing four defensemen. If that happens, we’ve got young kids, but when you’re making a stretch run you can never be too deep on the back end.
“Up front it’s the same thing. You always want to be a little heavier at center if you can. I wouldn’t say that we’re only going to look for that, but if you’re asking me, in a perfect world, you’re looking at depth on defense and up the middle.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein doesn’t see the LA Kings going after Jason Spezza if he were to become available, Mike Fisher would be a better option.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Drew Doughty deal is coming along slowly, no rush, will get done.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Justin Williams is likely the only UFA that the Kings would re-sign, and if they fall out of the playoffs, they may deal him.
Savard has concussion … Iginla-Rangers rumors nonsense … Fisher has limited no-trade … Sidney speaks video
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors, NHL Videos on January 25th, 2011
- Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald: “After being examined by the Bruins medical staff, Marc has been diagnosed with a moderate concussion,” said GM Peter Chiarelli in a statement posted at the team’s media site this evening. “There is no timetable for his return and there will be no further updates at this time.”
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: Trade rumors that Jarome Iginla could be heading to the NY Rangers are “utter nonsense.” David Pagnotta via twitter: Hadn’t heard the Iginla-Rangers rumors, and people he asked are balking at it.
- Andy Stickland via twitter: Local St. Louis talk of Erik Johnson being traded is “nonsense.”
- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: San Jose Sharks forward Ryane Clowe should be back in the lineup Wednesday after missing 4 games. Antero Niittymaki can come off the IR on Thursday, though they don’t play again until after the all-star break.

- Sidney Crosby speaks about his concussion.
Semin staying … Spezza happy … Columbus interested in Bieksa/Kaberle … Kings shopping Williams/Stoll
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News on July 21st, 2010
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: An NHL GM told LeBrun that he heard that in the next CBA they’ll look to have the average of the five highest salaried years count against the cap. That’s one of several ideas that’s being tossed around.
- Dennis Bernstein (TFP) via twitter: Alexander Semin is not going anywhere.
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Jason Spezza once again has said he happy in Ottawa and hopes to stay there.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: If Anton Stralman gets a ‘hefty’ salary from arbitration next Monday, the Blue Jackets may walk away from it. GM Scott Howson may start investigating other options, possibly Kevin Bieksa and Tomas Kaberle. There is a chance that the Blue Jackets could dangle Nikita Filatov as bait. For Bieksa they probably wouldn’t have to offer Filatov, a lesser prospect could work, unless the Canucks added more than Bieksa for Filatov. It’s not known if Filatov is the kind of player Burke is interested in. The Blue Jackets are reluctant to break up their top-6 forwards, which is what Burke covets for Kaberle.
- NHLSourcesSay via twitter: Ryan Johnson and the Columbus Blue Jackets are closing in on a deal, 1 year between $850,000 and $900,000.
- NHLSourcesSay via twitter: Sources saying that Los Angeles Kings are shopping Justin Williams and Jarret Stoll.
- Genadi Boguslavski (sovsport.ru) via twitter: Jose Theodore getting interest from a few KHL teams.
- Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: Maxim Afinogenov getting interest from KHL, but will focus on NHL until August 1st.
- Michael Russo via twitter: Rumors that Nick Leddy could be heading back to the Blackhawks are untrue. Wild and Leddy are talking. In 2-3 weeks, it could be different though.
Justin Williams Out Indefinitely With Broken Right Leg
Posted by Derek in NHL Injuries, NHL News on December 28th, 2009
“Los Angeles Kings right wing Justin Williams broke his right leg early in the first period in a loss to Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night.
Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski was spinning off a check of Kings centre Anze Kopitar to hit Williams behind the Phoenix net when both players fell onto Williams.
Williams fell backward with his right leg trapped underneath his torso, dropped onto his back and remained on the ice as play continued briefly in the Kings’ end. He was taken off by stretcher after a lengthy delay at 4:27 of the first period.” (source-TSN)
