- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The Rangers locked up another one of their RFAs yesterday, signing Brian Boyle to a 3 year deal worth $5.1 million, a $1.7 million cap hit. Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubinsky have both filed for salary arbitration. Dubinsky’s hearing is next Thrusday and the Rangers are expected to select a 2 year arbitration award. Dubinsky is scheduled to be a UFA in 2 years. Callahan would be a UFA after next season. Dubinsky and Callahan are expected to get between a $3.7 and $4.4 million arbitration award. The Rangers are looking for a veteran 3rd pair defenseman.
- Steve Zipay of Newsday: The Rangers have about $11.2 million remaining, so there is plenty of room to get Dubinsky and Callahan signed. Both players are expected to sign multi-year contracts worth around $4 million per season.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: Kristian Huselius had surgery yesterday to repair his torn pectoral muscle. GM Scott Howson will meet up with Huselius today, in between phone calls where he’ll be looking for a free agent winger.
“We’re going to be active,” Howson said. “We’re going to do our best to find somebody who can help us get through this stretch of games without (Huselius) – however long that may be.”
They will be seeking to sign someone to a 1 year deal worth $2 million or less. Some possibilities are: Cory Stillman, Vaclav Prospal, Brendan Morrison, Steve Bernier, Sergei Samsonov, J.P. Dumont, Marek Svatos and Jason Williams.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Portzline wouldn’t be surprised if Kristian Huselius’ injury sparked talk on the long-whispered Ales Hemsky to Columbus deal.
- Stephen Whyno via twitter: Karl Alzner’s agent in a text: “We are still talking and will continue the negotiations [yesterday].”
- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: Teddy Purcell’s arbitration hearing is set for July 20th, but GM Steve Yzerman hopes to get a deal done before that. The sides are not far apart after they had a “good, long” conversation last night.
“I fully expect to see Teddy in the lineup in September and have a contract done,” Yzerman said. ”Whether it’s through the arbitration process or before that, we’ll have a contract in place next week.”

- Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks on long-term front loaded contracts,
Forget the nine-year deals both Richards and Bryzgalov signed. The Kovalchuk Amendment not only allows, but encourages an 18-year front-loaded deal for a 21-year-old coming off Entry Level, under which nearly all of the money is packed into the first 10 years as long as the final nine seasons are established at $1M apiece.
That’s the formula that would get Steven Stamkos on an offer sheet. That’s the formula that would get Drew Doughty. That’s the formula (though adjusted for a 13-year deal running through age 40) that most assuredly would have gotten Zach Parise, which is exactly why the Devils filed for salary arbitration and thus removed the winger from the market.
Brooks thinks this is what the league wanted as proof that the system is broken, and it plans on fixing it in the next CBA. They will look to keep contract at 5 to 7 years, and take the average of the 3 to 5 highest years to get the cap number.
- James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail: Steven Stamkos and Drew Doughty seem to be the perfect candidates to sign an offer sheet, but so far it hasn’t happened. There have only been 6 offer sheets in the past 5 years. Carolina signed Sergei Fedorov to one in 1998, 6 years at $38 million. Mirtle offers up some reasons why teams may not look at signing players to offer sheets. 1. Cost is too prohibitive – if a team were to sign Doughty or Stamkos, it would have to be for a lot more than $7 million in hopes that the offer wouldn’t be matched. If it was for over $7.835 million it would cost the team 4 1st round draft picks. 2. Teams are afraid of retaliation – If the Leafs put in an offer for Stamkos, the Lightning could do the same for Schenn, which would drive up the cost of the players. In 2008 the Blues matched an offer sheet from the Canucks for David Backes. The Blues then signed Steve Bernier to offer sheet, which the Canucks matched. 3. They create bad blood – see the Dustin Penner and Thomas Vanek situation with Oilers. Burke and Regier were not impressed with then GM Kevin Lowe. 4. They rarely work – Chris Gratton in 1997 was the last player to change teams before Dustin Penner did a couple years ago.
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: The Capitals traded Eric Fehr to the Jets for Danick Paquette and a 4th round pick on Friday, a deal that put them about $400,000 under the salary cap ceiling. They still need to re-sign Karl Alzner. If the Capitals put Tom Poti on LTIR at the start of the season, it would clear up $3.2 million in cap space. Alzner’s agent said they are having “good negotiations” but “we just disagree where Karl’s value is.”
“We’ve been trying for a long time to work on a two-year deal, with value based on what Karl’s arbitration would come in at,” said Barry, who added that a longer-term deal was not discussed with Washington. “We’ve just been unable to bridge the gap at this stage.”
- CP in the Globe and Mail: The Jets have acquired Kenndal McArdle from the Panthers for Angelo Esposito.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: The Canucks have acquired the rights to Mike Duco from the Panthers for Sergei Shirokov.
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: The Flames have acquired Jordan Henry from the Panthers for Keith Seabrook.
“Jordan Henry is a two-way defenceman who plays with an edge to his game,” said Flames GM Jay Feaster in a statement. “He is a responsible and smart defender, yet he is also adept at joining the rush and pinching down the wall to support the offence. He is still a solid prospect, and we viewed this trade as an opportunity to give two young players a new start with different organizations.
“We look forward to seeing Jordan compete with our other recent depth acquisitions for a spot in our top seven in camp.”

- Larry Brooks via twitter: The NY Rangers have re-signed defenseman Michael Sauer this morning to a 2 year deal worth $2.5 million.
- Frank Seravalli of hte Philadelphia Daily News: Sources are saying that the Flyers have begun shopping goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. GM Paul Holmgren denied that he was involved in trade talks. The Flyers may not be getting the asking price they had hoped for. Bobrovsky carries a $1.75 million next season. They are okay with Bobrovsky as their backup to start the season, but if they could get a good return for him, they’d be foolish not to move him.
- Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun: Flames GM Jay Feaster continues to look for ways to improve his team, and he’ll be include looking at teams who are trying to move salary. MacFarlane suggests an offer sheet to Weber, Stamkos or Doughty, but adds that they would be likely matched.The Capitals sit over $64.3 million, and have Karl Alzner unsigned. The Flames could also look at Mike Green, but would have to send some salary back to take on Green’s $5.25 million. They could also look at Alexander Semin, who’ll be a UFA after next season. The Sabres may be looking to move one of their forwards.
- Neil Greenberg of the Washington Capitals: Some believe the Capitals need to move Alex Semin to create the cap room to re-sign Karl Alzner, but Greenberg thinks that would create “more harm than good.” Since the lockout, Semin has scored 166 goals, include 5 straight season with 25 goals or more. Semin also opens it up Ovechkin and Backstrom, as the team is thin offensively after the 3.
- Faceoff.com: Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs has said she’s losing faith in finding a new owner for the Coyotes and keeping the team in Phoenix. Since the NHL took over the team in 2009, 3 separate deals to buy the team have fallen through.
“In many ways the City of Glendale has no control over our future,” Scruggs told the station. “We have some, but we don’t have final control. The decision is with the National Hockey League, the 29 other owners, who they want to be an owner of the team.”
“I have never supported having the team leave, however now I believe that the only realistic thing to do is to take a look — for all of as elected officials — what would life be like with no team in the arena,” Scruggs said.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Barring an unforeseen trade, Blues GM Armstrong says he’s done with his offseason additions and the Blues roster will remain the same.
- Chris Botta via twitter: Islanders draft pick Blake Kessel have offers from 4 teams including the Flyers.

- Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburgh Times: The Lightning and Steven Stamkos continued negotiating yesterday. It’s “A work in progress” according to GM Steve Yzerman. Stamkos’ agent Mark Guy in a text, “Still working on it.” There was an unfounded twitter rumor that Stamkos’ rights would be sent to the Maple Leafs, and Evgeni Malkin would end up in Tampa Bay.
- Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Capitals are rumored to be shopping Alex Semin around the league with the Canadiens, Predators, Maple Leafs, Flyers, Penguins and Sharks possibly interested. Jets Dman Zach Bogosian’s name has been linked to Semin.
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein thinks that if Alexander Semin is traded, McPhee would ship him West.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Negotiations between Drew Doughty and the LA Kings aren’t moving along quickly. Kings GM Dean Lombardi,
“I am getting the feeling on Drew that unfortunately this could take a while. As we just saw this past week free agency produces a frenzy for players at all levels. We must be judicious about not getting into this market for our own players. Therefore it is critical with Drew that the dollars reflect a fair rate of return regarding the term of the contract. We must be prepared to do what it takes to get it right.”
Lombardi added that they’d match any offer sheet. The Kings may be waiting to see what kind of deal the Predators and Shea Weber come too. Doughty’s agent Don Meehan in an email, “There is nothing new to report concerning any further discussions concerning Drew Doughty.”
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Tyler Bozak re-signs with the Maple Leafs for 2 years, $3 million. (Last night there were reports that he signed for 2 years, $1.9 million)
- Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: The Capitals are about $545,000 under the salary cap with RFAs Troy Brouwer and Karl Alzner still unsigned. They are able to go over the cap by 10% during the summer, and in the fall they might put Tom Poti and Eric Fehr on LTIR if they are not fully healed. The Capitals could also look at some trades to create some flexibility. Ted Leonsis wrote, “We will look to make some trades in the off season maybe even sign another free agent. We will continue to look at all of our options. We may not be able to get anything done. We may be able to do something. Time will tell.”
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: After locking up Andrew Ladd yesterday, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is hopeful to get a deal done with Blake Wheeler soon,
“We had great conversations with his representative (Tuesday) and those will be ongoing,” said Cheveldayoff. “The fact he filed for salary arbitration doesn’t mean much at this time. We have a lot of time to get a deal done.”
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dipatch: The Blue Jackets are still looking to add a defenseman to play with newly re-signed Marc Methot on the 2nd pairing. They are talking with Bryan McCabe, Brent Sopel, Scott Hannan and some others.
- Jim Matheson via twitter: Ales Hemsky will be in the last year of his deal and will make $4.1 million. It’s sounding like he’d like to re-sign with Oilers.
- Slava Malamud via twitter: Semyon Varlamov’s agent has said that Varlamov has signed a deal with the Avalanche, and that talk about door being open to the KHL are lies.

- Darren Dreger via twitter: Sources say Robyn Regehr has been asked to waive his no-move clause and accept a trade to the Buffalo Sabres.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: LeBrun has been told that the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames have talked about Ryan Smyth. Talks are very preliminary, but intriguing.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk was told by Pat Morris (Richards agent) that they are going to July 1st and won’t waive the no-movement clause.
- Helene Elliott via twitter: Elliottt doesn’t see the LA Kings and Drew Doughty getting a deal done anytime soon. She does expect a Ryan Smyth trade this weekend. Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Bernstein isn’t hearing any difficulties regarding Kings and Doughty discussions.
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Agent Don Meehen is expected to meet with the Kings about Doughty and Lightning about Steven Stamkos tomorrow.
- Dmitry Chesnokov via twitter: Andrei Markov’s Russian agent didn’t deny that Markov re-signed with the Canadiens. He told SovSport, “I’m very happy for Andrei.” Agent added “Markov had a few very attractive offers from the KHL. He didn’t even consider them; wanted to stay in MTL.”
- Pierre LeBrun via twitter: According to Don Meehan on the reports that Andrei Markov re-signed with the Canadiens “We’re not done, we’re still working on it.” Meehan is expected to meet with Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier later today or tomorrow.
- Paul Hunter via twitter: Maple Leafs GM Burke said he’d trade his 3 top picks (25th, 30th and 39th) for an established player that could help now.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie is hearing that the Canadiens are the ‘mystery’ team on Jagr’s list.
- Andy Strickland via twitter: Blues and Matt D’Agostini talks are to pick up at the draft, could be looking for 1 year deal in the $1.5-$1.9 million range.

Sunday Morning Rumor Round up – Feb. 20th 2011

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The League is trying to find a local owner for the Atlanta Thrashers, and if they can’t find one in the next 6-8 weeks they could be relocated. Alex Kovalev is getting interest from the Penguins. The Pens were interested in Curtis Glencross before the Flames got hot. The Senators are trying to move Filip Kuba to free up money for re-signing Chris Phillips. The Canadiens are interested in Phillips. The Maple Leafs are looking for a Dman, they kicked tires with Bogosian but there doesn’t seem to be a fit, and they are not interested in Souray. Avalanche GM Greg Sherman said he’s not moving Milan Hejduk. Teams are calling the Thrashers about Zach Bogosian, and they were offered two first-round picks plus a prospect for him, but it wasn’t a ‘true hockey’ deal and they’d like to make the playoffs.
- Ryan Rishaug via twitter: The Capitals and Oilers have had talks regarding Ales Hemsky, but nothing is close. The Oilers have interest in Karl Alzner or John Carlson. The LA Kings have interest in Hemsky or Dustin Penner, preliminary talks only. Oilers would look at Brayden Schenn, Kyle Clifford, etc. The Canadiens have also shown interest in Penner but they are not offering much. There is also a Predators deal for a defenseman, but unlikely.
- Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini on Sheldon Souray being on re-entry waivers, “In speaking to so many mangers over the last few weeks, recognizing how many people are looking for defencemen, this is an opportunity, I think, for some team, and for Sheldon,” said Tambellini, who has no gut feeling either way.”
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: No teams contacted Tambellini saying they were interested in Souray. Two Maple Leafs scouted the Oilers-Canadiens game on Thursday, with Matheson wondering if Burke wants Penner. Lots of teams are looking at Smid.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Kings GM Dean Lombardi did not indicate if he’ll be making an impact move soon. The Kings have looked at Ales Hemsky and Panthers David Booth. If Brad Richards does become available, he’d carry a heavy price. Lombardi isn’t willing to discuss Brayden Schenn in a deal.
- Dan Tencer via twitter: The Predators have been scouting the Oilers, and may have an interest in Ladislav Smid.
- Darren Millard via twitter: Burke tells Millard that he has no interest in Sheldon Souray.
- Terry Frei of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk was asked if he’d consider waiving his no trade, “That’s an interesting question,” Hejduk said. “I haven’t thought about it yet. We’ll see what’s going to come in the next whatever it is. . . . I’ve played all my career here, and I would like it to stay that way. We’ll see.”
- Andrew Gross of North Jersey.com: Teams are asking the Rangers about their young players (like Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Marc Staal, Dan Girardi Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh) and Sather may not be interested in dealing draft picks.
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild won’t be sellers but GM Chuck Fletcher said , “We’re not mortgaging the future.” The Wild probably don’t have the assets (or want to part with them) to add a big scorer. They could use a center with Mikko Koivu’s injury.

- Greg Brady via twitter: From a Devils insider, Kovalchuk’s benching had nothing to do with his on-ice play. Brady speculates that it might come out today what the real reason was, theory is the he skipped or was late for special teams meeting.
- Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: David Krejci was absent for the Bruins practice today. Andrew Ference moved up to the #1 defensive pairing with Zdeno Chara now that Johnny Boychuk is out. Dennis Seidenberg is with Mark Stuart. Matt Hunwick is with Adam McQuaid.
- James Murphy of ESPN Boston: In December when Marc Savard and Marco Sturm come off LTIR ($7.5 million combined), the Bruins will have to move out a couple bodies. They currently have $1.8 million in cap space with the 2 on LTIR. It’s been mentioned for awhile that Michael Ryder and his $4 million salary could be on his way out, but they’ll have to move more than that. Marco Strum hasn’t been approached about waiving his no movement clause, and it’s unlikely that he would. Blake Wheeler ($2.2 million) and Matt Hunwich ($1.4 million) are possible trade candidates.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Columbus Blue Jackets left winger Kristian Huselius will not play tonight against the Flyers due to a foot/ankle injury.
- Will DePaoli via twitter: The Pittsburgh Penguins have assigned Eric Tangradi and Andrew Hutchinson to the AHL. So it looks like Aaron Asham and Zbynek Michalek are ready to go.
- Ben Wright via twitter: Peter Mannino has been assigned to the AHL, Ondrej Pavelec has been activated from IR.
- Jonas Siegel via twitter: Nikolai Kulemin was skating with Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel at Maple Leafs practice today. Versteeg was with Grabovski and MacArthur.
- Corey Masisak via twitter: Mike Green and Tom Poti are practicing today, Karl Alzner and John Carlson are not. Masisak reports that Poti lasted only 10 minutes at the Capitals practice. Katie Carrera reports that Alzner was excused for personal reasons. Masisak reports that Brooks Laich is playing defense at practice today.
- Allen Panzeri via twitter: Jason Spezza, Filip Kuba, and Pascal Leclaire are not at the Senators practice today.
- Erik Erlendsson via twitter: Missing from the Lightning’s practice today: Simon Gagne (neck), Dominic Moore (lower-body), Brett Clark (wrist), Matt Smaby (illness) and Mattias Ohlund (rest).
- Kevin Oklobzija of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle: Michael Nylander will undergo surgery today for an injury to one of his vertebra in his neck. Nylander was checked into the boards with what appeared to be a legal hit. It could be career ending.
- Genadi Boguslavski via twitter: Eugeni Artiukin is close to joining SKA.

Some Trades That Didn’t Happen at the Deadline

- The Flyers, Canucks, Capitals and Ducks all talked to the Maple Leafs about Tomas Kaberle. Burke was looking for a 1st round pick, a mid-round pick, and a top prospect. The Flyers would have had to convince one of Danny Briere, Scott Hartnell, or Simon Gagne to waive their no movement clause to fit Kaberle in. The Maple Leafs will most likely look to move Kaberle in the summer when his no trade clause doesn’t apply.
- The Islanders weren’t sure of the health of Rick DiPietro (shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone), so they decided to hold on to Dwayne Roloson and Martin Biron. The Blackhawks, Flyers and Capitals all inquired.
- Ray Whitney refused to waive his no trade clause without getting a contract extension of 3 years and $10.5 million. He could re-sign with the Hurricanes.
- The Bruins were interested in bringing in Wojtek Wolski, but didn’t have the have the young prospect to send the other way.
- The Capitals inquired about Senators defenseman Anton Volchenkov, but the Sens want to make a strong playoff push.
- The Canucks called about Raffi Torres, but he went to the Sabres.
- The Panthers tried to trade Tomas Vokoun but couldn’t get the return they wanted. They will most likely try to deal him at the Draft, and the Capitals might be interested. They could offer Karl Alzner in a package.
- 10 teams called the Predators about Dan Hamhuis, but Preds GM David Poile wouldn’t lower his 2nd round pick and a top prospect demand.
