Phoenix – Shane Doan, Daymond Langkow, Adrian Aucoin and Ray Whitney will be free agents 5. Anaheim – Bobby Ryan, Jason Blake and Teemu Selanne could find themselves on the move if the Ducks will be sellers.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Since Tom Gaglardi bought the Stars, GM Joe Nieuwendyk is finding things a little easier:
“What I’m finding now is I can get in on more conversations and at least test the waters more, and we’re doing that,” Nieuwendyk said. “We’re asking and we’re listening, and we’re trying to make sure of every opportunity that’s out there. Then, it’s up to us to make smart decisions.”
- Dennis Bernstein via twitter: Tuomo Ruutu and Vinny Prospal could be targeted by the Kings.

11:40 AM:
- Pierre LeBrun of TSN is reporting that Leafs will announce a 4 year contract extension for John-Michael Liles.
- Michael Traikos via twitter: If the Leafs do sign Liles for 4 years, it seems lot considering they have Gardiner, Jesse Blacker and Stuart Percy in the system.
- Michael Triakos via twitter: “I have to believe that the
#Leafs would not be re-signing Liles unless they were planning to move another puck-moving D-man before deadline.”
- Steve Dangle via twitter: Dangle notes Lefas Dmen with expiring contracts: Franson (RFA), Aulie (RFA), Finger (UFA), Gysbers (RFA), Holzer (RFA), Lashoff (RFA). Mikus (RFA).
11:25 AM:
- Nick Kypreos via twitter: There is speculation that the Maple Leafs and John-Michael Liles are closing in on a multi year contract extension. He is set to be a UFA after the season.
- James Mirtle via twitter: One big worry for the Maple Leafs would be Liles concussion issue. Another issue with the Leafs signing Liles is the salary cap. It was widely believed the Leafs would only re-sign one of Liles or Mikhail Grabovski.

- James Mirtle via twitter: Jonas Gustavsson’s contract situation is getting more interesting as the season moves on.
- Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Grabovski’s name has surfaced in the rumor mill. He’ll be a UFA after the season, and would get some interest on the trade market. He has been a solid player and it may be hard to let him go, and it could have a negative affect on Nikolai Kulemin.
- TSN 1050 Radio: Darren Dreger and James Mirtle talk Leafs. Teams calling about Grabovski, MacArthur and defenseman.

Giroux practices … Arniel safe … Burke could be looking at a Jan. trade … Parise only dealt if can’t be re-sign
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on December 19th, 2011
NHL holiday roster freeze kicks in at midnight tonight and ends at midnight on the 27th.
- Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Claude Giroux practiced with the Flyers yesterday in a no contact jersey for the first time since sustaining a concussion. He said his headaches are “pretty much” gone. Giroux is not expected to play until after Christmas, and could miss the Winter Classic.
- Aaron Portzline via twitter: Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson on Scott Arniel’s coaching status:
“Coaching is not an issue on this team, as to where we are right now.”
“The players have to take it upon themselves to play better. “We’re all struggling through this, players included.”
- Kevin Paul Dupont via twitter: The Maple Leafs are wilting, so expect GM Brian Burke to make a significant deal at the start of January. It’s time for ID “tradeables” on the Leafs roster.
- Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch: The Blue Jackets talked with the Coyotes about Kyle Turris, but they couldn’t find a match. It’s likely the Blue Jackets will trade Vinny Prospal at the trade deadline. The 36 year old will be a UFA at the end of the season.
- Darren Dreger of TSN: Before being sent to the Canadiens for Jaroslav Spacek, the Hurricanes were offering a 2nd round pick to anyone willing to take Tomas Kaberle’s contract. If the Canadiens miss the playoffs or are knocked out early, can expect a full organizational review, with GM Pierre Gautier being very vulnerable. A few teams have made strong offers for Maple Leafs defensemen Keith Aulie and Cody Franson. They were “good” offers, but Burke isn’t interested in trading either defenseman at the moment. Burke may use Franson as a “piece” in his “fine tuning.” Aulie may only be dealt if he’s part of a bigger deal. The Devils priority is to re-sign Zach Parise, and he’d only be dealt after Lamoriello has done everything he can to re-sign him. Dreger thinks the Red Wings and Penguins would be as aggressive on Parise as other teams.
- Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is still looking to make some trades, and has often brought up dealing a defenseman for a forward.
- Michael Russo via twitter: The Wild have called up Chad Rau and Jed Ortmeyer, placed Casey Wellman on the IR, and sent Cody Almond back to the AHL. The Wild do not expect Mikko Koivu or Pierre-Marc Bouchard to be in the lineup.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: Flames Rene Bourque will have a disciplinary hearing for his hit on Blackhawks Brent Seabrook.
- Dallas Morning News: Richard Bachman is expected to start for the Stars against the Ducks.

Morning NHL rumors involving Jarome Iginla, Ryan Miller and the Flyers need for a defenseman
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL News, NHL Rumors on November 30th, 2011
- Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun: If Jarome Iginla is thinking about asking for a trade or possibly open to the idea of moving on, he isn’t saying so. He still believes that Calgary is the best situation for him.
“I want to win here and believe we can be a good team here. That’s really where my thoughts are,” Iginla said.
“It’s 60 games left, a lot of season. It’s a lot of time for us to make our way back.”
The 34 year old Iginla has one more year on his contract at $7 million. He may not want to go through another rebuilding process.
“It’s just the way it works, the way media is, as far as Internet and how easy it is to just run with a story,” he continued. “It’s not always accurate, that’s for sure, but that’s fine. I’m not blaming anybody, but there are things you read that aren’t accurate and you just move on.
“The best way to stop a story is to win games and climb in the standings.”
- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: If Flames GM Jay Feaster decides he wants to move Iginla, he’ll need to get him to waive his no-movement clause and a blessing from ownership. If Iginla decides he wants to be traded, LeBrun thinks the Bruins will be one of the teams that will be interested.
Over the weekend Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal reported that Ryan Miller wanted out of Buffalo.
“That is not true at all, and I have never made any comment concerning my status with the team,” Miller told ESPN.com via text message Tuesday. “I am proud of being a Sabre for all we have accomplished, and I am excited about the new chapter Terry and Kim Pegula have inspired. I am working hard to get healthy and build my game back to where I want it so I can start to contribute to an effort to build a championship team.”
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Ducks’ chief executive, Michael Schulman gave GM Bob Murray a vote of confidence.
“We are certainly frustrated with the results to this point but remain optimistic that we can turn this season around,” Schulman said. “Bob has been largely responsible for a great deal of our success since he joined the organization, and we have complete confidence he will lead us out of this difficult time as well.”
- Jay Greenberg of CSN Philly: Injuries have hit the Flyers blueline, and they will likely go with some call-ups for now. “People I talk to, everybody is looking for a defenseman now, not looking to trade one.” said Holmgren. That could change if the Flyers decided to offer up one of their core young forwards.
- Dustin Leed of The Hockey Guys: Sources are telling Leed that Chris Pronger’s knee surgery could keep him out longer than the expected 4 weeks. The Flyers are concerned about Pronger’s injuries, and GM Paul Holmgren has been working the phones for a defenseman. Sources have confirmed that the Flyers have contacted the Flames about Mark Giordano and Scott Hannan. Putting Andreas Nodl on waivers put the Flyers at 49 contracts. The Hurricanes are willing to move a defenseman or two for a top 9 forward. The Flyers are not interested in Tomas Kaberle. They could offer draft picks for Tim Gleason ($2.9 million) or Bryan Allen ($2.75 million). Philly has the Kings 2nd round pick, either a 2012 or 2013 2nd round pick from the Panthers, and a 2013 3rd round pick from the Wild, to go along with their picks that they could offer up. Lightning Bruno Gervais is another potential target. The Canucks have been shopping Keith Ballard, but Leed doesn’t see the Flyers interested in his $4.2 million salary. The Flyers don’t have any interest in moving Matt Carle or Sergei Bobrovsky at the moment. For now they will go with Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon, but they’ll likely need another steady defenseman at some point.
- David Alter via twitter: The Maple Leafs have sent Keith Aulie back to the Marlies, so Carl Gunnarsson will play tonight.
Sunday notes on Flames, Leafs, Canucks, Blake, Doughty, Connolly, Mueller, Hemsky and McDonald
Posted by Mark Easson in NHL Entry Draft, NHL Injuries, NHL News, NHL Rumors on October 16th, 2011
- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: 2 league sources are saying that the Flames GM Jay Feaster is desperately trying to move contracts off their books. The Flames may be shopping Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and David Moss, but it may be tough finding someone wanting those contract. Stajan has 3 years left on his 4 year, $14 million deal. Ollie Jokinen, Hagman and Moss could be deadline rentals. Despite having the 5th highest payroll, Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson could be on the hotseat. A league executive, “There’s actually a lot of teams talking for this time of year. I don’t think you’re going to see anything shake down until the end of the month.” Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is checking out interest in Carl Gunnarson and Tyler Bozak. The Leafs would like to make room for defenseman Keith Aulie and they don’t plan on sending Jake Gardiner to the minors. Canucks GM Mike Gillis has been working the phones looking to move a defenseman, possibly Keith Ballard, and not goalie. One league executive hasn’t heard Kyle Turris’ name mentioned in trade talks.
- Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Ducks winger Jason Blake could be out 3 months after suffering a lacerated tendon just above his wrist. He will have surgery on Monday.
- Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty will be out 7 to 10 days with an upper-body injury. Kings GM Dean Lombardi said it didn’t involve Doughty’s head.
- Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: The Lightning will have to decide soon if they want to burn a contract year with 2010 1st round pick Brentt Connolly. Connolly has played in 5 games so far, they play their 10th game on Oct. 27th.
- Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson would like to see the NHL entry draft switch the drafting age from 18 to 19, “For the most part, 18- and 19-year-old players are not close to being ready for the NHL. If the draft goes back a year, it slows down the process at every level. Right now, everyone is on a treadmill to get there.” Only 6% of 18 year olds play in the NHL the year they are draft.
- Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Avalanche forward Peter Mueller is listed as day-to-day and is skating, but the Avs have contected a concussion expert who has dealt with Mueller in the past.
- John Shannon via twitter: Oilers Ales Hemsky will be out 3 to 4 weeks with a strained shoulder.
- Jeremy Rutherford via twitter: The Blues will update Andy McDonald’s status on Monday. Andy Strickland via twitter: Initially prognosis doesn’t look great and Stickland wouldn’t be shocked if he’s put on the IR.

- Darren Dreger of TSN: Brendan Shanahan said he’s not pushing to have fighting removed from hockey. The Leafs will put Nazem Kadri on the IR, which allows them to keep an extra player around for the time being. They will keep 8 defenseman, Matt Lashoff will likely go down, Keith Aulie and Jake Gardiner will be closely monitored. The Leafs are interested in adding another top forward. They are looking for a someone with size and a track record of making an impact, and are willing to trade two younger guys. - Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Touch icing took it’s toll on Oilers rookie defenseman Taylor Fedun. Fedun was taken off the ice on a stretcher with a broken right femur after being spilled by Wild’s Eric Nystrom. (video at the bottom of the post)
- Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: 2011 1st round pick Mark Scheifele is making a big statement in camp with 4 goals and 4 assists in 5 games. If he makes the team, Scheifele will still need to sign a contract.
“It’s not in my hands anymore. I worked my hardest and I’m happy with my effort,” he said. “I don’t really understand the whole contract thing. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I trust my agent will do what’s best for me so hopefully something can get done.
“I want to be here so bad. I hope I can stick around.”
- Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets cut 4 players yesterday. David Koci was released from his tryout, Carl Klingberg was sent to the AHL, and Spencer Machacek and Brett Festerling were put on waivers.
- Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times: Patrick Sharp still plans getting into the Blackhawks season opener on Oct. 7th. “I’m supposed to take it easy with the shooting and skating, but I feel fine out there,” said Sharp, who practiced for the first time Friday. “There are no limitations.” He won’t play in the teams final exhibition game on Sunday.
- Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Aaron Volpatti and Victor Oreskovich have made the Canucks for the time being. An injury to Steve Pinizzotto may have handed the spot to Oreskovich. Volpatti beat out Mike Duco and Todd Fedoruk. Cody Hodgson will start the season centering Mikael Samuelsson and Marco Sturm on the 2nd line. Manny Malhotra will center Jannik Hansen and Chris Higgins on the 3rd line. Defensive pairing will likely be Bieksa and Hamhuis, Salo and Edler, Ballard and Tanev.
- Dan Rosen via twitter: The NY Rangers will make some cuts today. Rosen is curious to see if both Tim Erixon and Michael Del Zotto make it. Rosen would be surpised if Weise, Bourque, Hagelin, Newbury and Mitchell weren’t cut.

The commissioner (Gary Bettman) promised me I was next. We even had a meeting over lunch this past season, and he had all his people here, and he goes, ‘Yeah, I promised Mike he’d be the next one to go in the Eastern Conference.’ So I expect to be in next year. Jimmy D (Devellano) is on the phone every other week reminding them.

10:36 am:
- Greg Brady via twitter: People who Brady respect say that “Jerry D’Amigo’s more “NHL-ready” than Nazem Kadri, but D’Amigo wouldn’t satiate Leafs fanbase.”
9:50 am:
- Burke told Gord Stellick before the Panthers game that the Maple Leafs would try “other ways” to improve their offense rather than recalling Nazem Kadri. Well the “other ways” didn’t last too long. Let the debate if the Maple Leafs are bringing up Nazem Kadri at the right time begin.
- Darren Dreger via twitter: The Toronto Maple Leafs have called up Nazem Kadri and Keith Aulie.
- Bob McKenzie via twitter: McKenzie notes that this is “NOT” what the Leafs wanted to do.
- Elliotte Friedman via twitter: Friedman thinks that this means they are pressing the panic button. Friedman also asks, Is Kadri really ready to play against top-line guys in Eastern Conference?
I think the best time to call up Kadri would have been if/when the Leafs fire Ron Wilson. Two stories would deflect some attention away from Kadri.
I’ll continue to add some pieces to this entry through out the day.
