Morning Hits: Garrioch roundup, top UFAs, Soderberg and Clarkson

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Garrioch lists some buyout candidates: 1. Ilya Bryzgalov (PHI) – $23 million spread out over 14 years. 2. Roberto Luongo (VAN) – $27 million and on the Canucks payroll until 2031. 3. Brad Richards (NYR) – $27 million and on the payroll until 2027.The NHL had meetings to discuss making the nets bigger in an attempt to increase scoring. No one really believes that it will happen.
Terry Murray could replace Peter Laviolette if the Flyers decide to fire him.
There could be house-cleaning this summer in Colorado. President Pierre Lacroix, GM Greg Sherman and coach Joe Sacco could all be fired. Joe Sakic could take over, which could lead to a Patrick Roy return.
It doesn’t look like Jets UFA defenseman Ron Hainsey will be back. The Flyers will be among the teams interested.
The Flyers will make another run at defenseman Keith Yandle.
The Red Wings had calls on Valtteri Filppula at the deadline but decided to keep him. Teams that called were the Penguins, Bruins, Maple Leafs and Rangers.
Two GM’s on the hotseat could be Sabres Darcy Regier and Stars Joe Nieuwendyk. Canadiens assist GM Rick Dudley could be fit in Buffalo. Brian Burke’s name has been mentioned as a possible Stars replacement. Burke has also been linked to the Rangers if Glen Sather steps aside.
- Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun: Zeisberger lists his top 10 UFAs, but not in order: 1. Jarome Iginla 2. Nathan Horton 3. Stephen Weiss 4. Ryane Clowe 5. Patrik Elias 6. Niklas Backstrom 7. Sergei Gonchar 8. Derek Roy 9. Mike Ribeiro 10. Tyler Bozak
- Eliotte Friedman: The Swedish Ice Hockey Federation was arguing that Carl Soderberg was under contract until May 15th. The NHL ruled that, that wasn’t the case as his Swedish team gave him his release. Dominic Tiano: Soderberg is leaving Sweden on Monday. James Murphy of ESPN Boston: He’ll join the team on Wednesday.
“We are fortunate to get a player like Carl at this stage of the season,” Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a release. “I would like to thank the President of the Linkoping hockey club, Mike Helber and their GM, Johan Hemlin, in playing a significant part in allowing Carl to play for the Boston Bruins. Carl is a big, strong, two-way center who can also play wing. We look forward to him joining our team this week.”
- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Brennan thinks that if the Senators could fit UFA wings David Clarkson into their budget this summer, they should do it. There would be lots of competition for him.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Four GMs that could be on the hotseat: Greg Sherman (COL), George McPhee (WAS), Jay Feaster (CAL) and Dale Tallon (FLA).Marian Gaborikturned down a $79 million from the Wild in 2009, thinking that he could get $100 million. He ended up signing a 5 year, $35 million deal the with Rangers. The Blue Jackets were the only team interested in his $7.5 million contract for next season.
Sources say the Blue Jackets offered one of their three first round picks to the Stars for Jaromir Jagr. The Red Wings were also interested in Jagr at the deadline.
A decision on the Phoenix Coyotes is imminent. ”In Canada, the fans have been very forgiving,” said a league executive. “There are 20 owners in the United States who are sick of writing cheques for $1 million to prop this thing up.” Garrioch thinks that moving them to Quebec City and keeping the Blue Jackets in the West makes the most sense until they have expansion.
The Sharks thought about trading defenseman Dan Boyle but they went on a 5 game winning streak. The Flyers, Rangers and Red Wings were interested. They could look to move him in the summer.
Ryane Clowe gave up on his sign-and-trade thoughts when he found out that nobody would give him an 8 year deal in the $5.5 to $6 million range.
The Devils and Sabres had interest in Jets Alex Burmistrov.
It wouldn’t surprise some people if the Wild bought out Dany Heatley and his $7.5 million salary in the summer.
Expect the Flyers to be looking for a new coach at the end of their season.
- Adrian Dater: Avalanche winger Milan Hejduk remains out with a shoulder injury and he could retire after the season. “Hejduk, 37, has hinted this season will be it for him. He could change his mind, and here’s hoping he might. But I doubt it. Age is the great equalizer, and Hejduk has suffered his share of injuries in recent years. Along with the shoulder, he has had serious knee injuries and a troublesome back.”
- Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis called both James Reimer and Ben Scrivens five minutes after the trade deadline to let them know that neither was offered in a trade. The Canucks did ask for Scrivens in their offer, but the Leafs wouldn’t do unless they included a “significant portion” of Roberto Luongo’s salary. The Flames had agreed to take a 2nd round pick from the Maple Leafs for Miikka Kiprusoff. The Leafs didn’t get one call on Mike Komisarek.
- Dave Isaac of the Courier Post: Isaac notes that Flyers fans shouldn’t expect to see Shea Weber in a Flyers uniform anytime soon. After all of Weber’s signing bonuses, the Predators will pay him $27 million before next season and $41 million before the 2014-15 season starts, 37% of his contract. Weber also has a no-trade clause.
“That’s a financial unlikelihood for Nashville looking to move him, especially to Philadelphia,” said Stu Grimson, a former NHL tough guy who now is a radio commentator for the Preds.
The Flyers will have to look elsewhere. Coyotes Keith Yandle? Could they outbid the Islanders for Mark Streit if he doesn’t sign before free agency starts? Do they look at Senators Sergei Gonchar or Ron Hainsey?
Trade Deadline fallout notes: Red Wings, Wild, Sabres, Coyotes, Leafs and Kings

- The Fourth Period: The Red Wings were trying to make a deal all week, but weren’t able to put something together. It was believed that the Wings didn’t want to part with any of their top young talent. They wouldn’t give up a first round pick for Jay Bouwmeester. The Wings also looked into Jaromir Jagr. Valtteri Filppula will be a UFA but may have interest in returning.
“It’s been a great place to be, a great team obviously,” he told the News. “You want to be on that kind of team.”
- Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: The Sabres are picking up part of Jason Pominville’s contract. If they weren’t, the Wild would be over the salary cap. Working with Cap geek, they estimate that the Sabres may be covering $225,000 for this year, a pro-rated $900,000.
- Cap Geek: Not confirmed on the amount, but the Hurricanes could be picking up between $500,000 and $1.5 million of Jussi Jokinen’s now Penguins salary.
- Bill Watters: According to sources, the Maple Leafs offered the Coyotes Nazem Kadri, Matt Frattin and a 1st round pick for Keith Yandle. (You would assume this was ‘offered’ around Wednesday, but I wonder if it happened in the offseason, or at least sometime well before the trade deadline day)
- Bill Watters: Years ago, the Flyers offered Claude Giroux to the Lightning for defenseman Paul Ranger but was turned down by then GM Brian Lawton.
- John Hoven of Mayors Manor: Kings GM Dean Lombardi when asked if he was close to any trades on deadline day.
“No. I like our team, and I think we addressed our biggest need. And you see Matt Greene in there – we get him back, that’s like getting a player for nothing now. I didn’t see anything that was really going to improve us. Our depth up front with Toffoli and Brad Richardson, we forget about him, but he’s shown he’s a good depth player. So it wasn’t really anything there that made sense as terms of an upgrade, let alone then get to the part where if you upgrade, what’s it going to do to your cap and everything else. The other thing we were able to do on this that I really liked – and you know I’m confident in how I feel about this – we’ve got 10 picks in this year’s draft. You never want to lose sight of that part. Now, we don’t have a first rounder, but we’re going into this, we were able to keep this nucleus, get this piece here, and have 10 picks going in next year’s draft. Our eye going forward, we haven’t sold the farm by any stretch. I think we’ve got the space to keep our young players. Then hopefully…add the right veterans here going forward also. Now it’s up to our scouts to hit in the middle rounds.

- Bob McKenzie: As per Dreger, Miikka Kiprusoff struggling with moving and expects to remain with the Flames and may retire at the end of the year.
- Nick Kypreos: The Coyotes are asking for significant pieces back for Keith Yandle if they were to move him. David Pagnotta: If the Flyers want Yandle, it would cost them Sean Couturier plus more. The Red Wings and Blackhawks have shown interest in Yandle. Sam Carchidi: Yandle has 3 years and a $5.25 million cap hit. Flyers could fit him in by moving players to LTIR. Elliotte Friedman: Price is two impact forwards. One who could be a No. 1 center. Won’t be traded unless get a deal they can’t refuse.
- David Pagnotta: “Would the Sabres trade Ryan Miller? Yes. Would they move Thomas Vanek? Yes. Are deals likely to go down today? No… unless someone steps up”
- John Vogl: Source on Thomas Vanek: ”I would be very surprised if he gets traded.”
- Pierre LeBrun: Coyotes unlikely to trade Mike Smith. They still want to re-sign him, today or at a later date.
- Arthur Staple: Source saying the Islanders are after Blackhawks Brandon Saad. Cost would be high. Craig Custance: Has been told that the Blackhawks wouldn’t consider trading Saad.
- Terry Jones: Jones disagrees that the Oilers won’t do anything.
- Arthur Staple: The Islanders and Evgeni Nabokov continue contract talks, but nothing is imminent. They won’t move him.
- Renaud Lavoie: Will be interesting to see what the Bruins do if Patrice Bergeron is injured.
- Bruce Garrioch: 6 teams that are interested in Ben Bishop: Oilers, Flyers, Flames, Coyotes, Lightning and Hurricanes. Bob McKenzie: The Coyotes are one of five teams interested in Bishop. Greater than 50% chance that he traded today.
- Bruce Garrioch: 3 or 4 teams are interested in Sabres Drew Stafford.
- David Pagnotta: The Wild, Blue Jackets, Kings and Red Wings are among the teams interested in Sabres Jason Pominville. The Blue Jackets are the only team of the four that would trade a 1st. (Blue Jackets have Kings 1st and would move it)
- Pierre LeBrun: If Sharks do anything, could add veteran depth.
- Arash Madani: Leafs GM Dave Nonis on adding a goaltender: ”At this point we’re not any closer to a trade in that area than we were a day ago.” … ”We’re not selling. That’s our position right now.”

- Bruce Garrioch: Senators getting interest in Ben Bishop from the Flyers, Oilers, Hurricanes and Lightning. Would like a draft pick and player.
- Renaud Lavoie: Blue Jackets Steve Mason is available and wouldn’t be expensive to get. Could use a new start.
- Dan Rosen: The Leafs could do nothing regarding their goaltending situation. If it doesn’t work out, they could always revisit Miikka Kiprusoff or Roberto Luongo in the summer.
- David Pagnotta: The Avalanche aren’t shopping defenseman Erik Johnson, same with the Coyotes and Keith Yandle, but for the right price both players could be traded.
- Frank Seravalli: Teams have called the Flyers about Ruslan Fedotenko. He wouldn’t bring a big return if they decide to move him.

- Damien Cox: The Maple Leafs and Miikka Kiprusoff’s agent will continue talks this morning. Could be 50-50 at best.
- James Mirtle: Mirtle wouldn’t be shocked if the Maple Leafs did little today. GM Dave Nonis may be looking for bargains.
- Ansar Khan of MLive: The Red Wings would like to add a top-four defenseman or a top-six forward, but won’t give up a first round pick. Several options have already been traded.
“With the people that were moved the last couple of days, in most cases I talked to those general managers,” Red Wings GM Ken Holland said on Tuesday. “I don’t know that there’s a lot out there. We’ll see what happens (Wednesday).”
Red Wings GM Ken Holland won’t be looking for depth players.
“We made some competitive offers on a couple of players,” Holland said. “Some players we couldn’t get in the mix on. I’ll explore until the deadline.”
The Wings inquired about Jaromir Jagr and Jay Bouwmeester. Players the Red Wings might be interested in: Derek Morris, Mark Streit, Ryan Whitney, Keith Yandle, Curtis Glencross, Tomas Fleischmann, Jason Pominville, Mike Ribeiro and Drew Stafford.
- Kevin Allen: GM Holland is still looking, but would be fine if he ends the day with the same team.
- Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post: Flyers coach Peter Laviolette doesn’t think the Flyers are on edge about the deadline. GM Paul Holmgrem said on Saturday that he didn’t expect to be a buyer. The Flyers are six points out. They don’t have much to offer up if they decide they want to make a playoff push. Possible trade bait in Daniel Briere, Max Talbot and Braydon Coburn are all out with injuries. If they are looking to add a defenseman, they could look at: Jamie McBain, Ryan O’Byrne, Erik Johnson, Ryan Whitney, Derek Morris and Keith Yandle.
- Bruce McCurdy of the Edmonton Journal: Oilers GM Steve Tambellini on if it will be a busy trade deadline day.
“Hard to tell. We’re talking to a lot of teams about different options, short-term, long-term … I really won’t know until I get there on Wednesday.”
McCurdy lists some Oilers who could be traded: Ryan Whitney, Ales Hemsky, Ryan Jones, Eric Belanger, Ben Eager, Mark Fistric, Nikolai Khabibulin, Magnus Paajarvi and Theo Peckham.

- Chip Alexander: GM Jim Rutherford said the deadline day could be quiet for the Hurricanes. Not expecting to add another defenseman after the Bergeron acquisition. Rutherford added, ”We can’t make a trade that would help us more than getting Justin (Faulk) back.”
- Jimmy Murphy: Murphy doens’t think the Bruins are done, still want to a defenseman.
- Craig Custance: With Jaromir Jagr and Jay Bouwmeester traded, Custance isn’t sure if the Red Wings will do much by tomorrow.
- Craig Cusance: There is nothing imminent on the Keith Yandle front. A trade would have to make a lot of sense for the Coyotes to move him. They would need a legit top-six center.
- Bruce Garrioch: Having more than one team involved with Ryan Clowe is slowing the deal down.
- Bob Stauffer: Stauffer doesn’t see the Oilers moving Ryan Whitney. They could trade pending UFA Randy Jones or depth defenseman like Theo Peckham.
- Patrick King: If King were the Leafs or Canadiens, would jump in an grab a big name, the prices are reasonable.
- James Duthie: Nice acquisition for the Blackhawks, both Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa will be back in the lineup on Thursday.

- David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: The Canadiens, Bruins, Rangers and Canucks are in the hunt for Sharks Ryane Clowe. Clowe won’t stand in the way of possible trade. He and management have been working together.
“It’s a distraction if you let it be a distraction,” coach Todd McLellan said Sunday. “My experience around him this last week has been a good one. He’s been professional, he’s come to the rink and played hard, got himself healthy.”
GM Doug Wilson on if they are buyers or sellers,
“We’re both,” the G.M. responded. “Are we going to give up first- or second-round picks in a draft that’s viewed as very strong? The answer is no. This is the time that we’re going to replenish in a very strong draft year.
“But,” he added, “if there’s younger players that can fit into what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to play, I have no problem acquiring that maybe in lieu of a pick.”
- Paul Hamilton of WGR 550: Thomas Vanek on if he’d like to be traded,
“You never like to. I’ve raised my family here and I enjoy where I’m at, but I understand the situation and I’ve not talked to anyone about what their plan is. It’s something you can’t control and if happens, you move on.”
- Toronto Sun: Roberto Luongo trade talk is increasing.
“Mike is in discussions with multiple teams … Talks are beyond the tire-kicking stage,” Gilman told the Vancouver media.
“We need a third-line centre, but no one is going to ‘steal’ Roberto from us,” Gilman told reporters. “We’re not moving him for a rental. We need something for today and tomorrow.”
Maple Leafs Tyler Bozak fits their need. Bozak hasn’t been apart of any recent Maple Leafs offer according to the Vancouver Province.
The Leafs have looked to improve their top-four, and have been linked too: Keith Yandle, Dmitri Kulikov and Jay Bouwmeester.
- Lance Hornby: If the Leafs could get Miikka Kiprusoff at a bargain price, they can’t turn it down. No contract strings should be attached.
- Darren Dreger: There was more talk between the Flames and Maple Leafs this weekend. They are not close but more talks are expected over the next three days. Kiprusoff has maintained that he’d consider all options, including a trade, contract extension, etc.
- Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Penguins are still looking to add a 4th line center who will be a UFA at the end of the season. Coyotes Boyd Gordon, Sharks Michal Handzus and Blues Scott Nichol’s could be a fits for the Pens.The Blues may look to trade Patrik Berglund or David Perron this summer. Alex Steen or Jaden Schwartz could be moved to center if Berglund is traded.
The LA Kings are a wildcard for Jay Bouwmeester. Since Penner is unlikely to be back, they should be able to fit in his contract for next season.
Bruins pending UFA goalie Anton Khudobin is likely heading to the KHL and AHL goalie Niklas Svedberg will be their backup next season.
Kings Dustin Penner could be available. Matheson thinks the Bruins should take a look.
The Hurricanes are still looking for a defenseman, Ryan Whitney has to be a possibility.
NHL Rumors II: Sabres, Red Wings, Bouwmeester, Yandle, Liles, DeKeyser and Franzen

- John Vogl of the Buffalo News: Sabres GM Darcy Regier,
“The things that we will look to add will focus on things beyond this year,” Regier told The Buffalo News by phone this evening. “It may include this year, but the focus is going to be on next year and maybe even beyond that. So things that we do are going to be with that light in mind.”
“The value of draft picks is probably a little higher, meaning that with the cap going down and the new contracts on the other side that have been signed, I think it’s added value to draft picks,” Regier said. “In some ways, it’s going to be harder to acquire draft picks for players in the event you’re trying to trade a player to get draft picks. I think the value in past years, I think you could probably expect a little higher value in draft picks than you can now.”
Trades could start happening soon.
“There’s things going on in the background, but I think what happens is teams generally have an order in which they would like to acquire players, so the players in front have to drop before the other moves take place,” he said. “It’s bottlenecked right now, but I think it’ll open up as we get closer to Wednesday.”
Jason Pominville has not been asked to submit a list of eight teams he won’t accept a trade too yet.
- The Fourth Period: Red Wings GM Ken Holland has already started trade talks with a few teams. He wants a top-six winger, a depth forward and a top-pairing defenseman.
“We’re going to work the phones and explore if there’s a move that can make us better,” Holland told NHL.com. “I’m not going to make a move for the sake of making a move. We’re a work in progress. We’re trying to have patience, and the more we’ve been able to hang in the race … it maybe gives me more patience.”
They have shown interest in Flames Jay Bouwmeester, Coyotes Keith Yandle and Maple Leafs John-Michael Liles. The asking price for Bouwmeester and Yandle is high.
Holland wants to make a move up front.
“I’m going to explore the market up front to see if there’s a fit,” he said. “I’m going to work the phones a little bit. I’ve talked to some people.”
- Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Red Wings landed Danny DeKeyser yesterday, and he’s expected to be at practice today. He won’t play tomorrow or Monday.
“He’ll be with us the rest of the regular season. When he plays is up to Mike Babcock, but we’re not holding tryouts. We’re trying to make the playoffs. Danny understands that we’re in a playoff race.”
Johan Franzen’s lower-body injury appears to be day-to-day. Mikael Samuelsson or Patrick Eaves could fill in for Franzen if he can’t go.
NHL Rumors I: Crowded goalie market, Regehr, Blackhawks and Yandle, Bruins and Ducks

- Damien Cox: The simple facts are: the Leafs talked to the Canucks this week about Roberto Luongo, they have some interest, and the price has dropped. Darren Dreger: Sources say the Canucks called the Maple Leafs to revisit talks. The Flames hope to have a better gauge on Miikka Kiprusoff this weekend. Dreger thinks that although there is interest in goalie options for the Maple Leafs, they are likely to nothing. TSN Radio: Bob McKenzie thinks the Maple Leafs want to bring in a veteran goaltender.
- Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province: If someone offers a draft pick and a low-end prospect, the Canucks wouldn’t take it. They still think they can get a player that can help them now, and a piece or two for the future. The goalie market is crowded. Mike Smith, Jimmy Howard and Niklas Backstrom could all be free agents. The trade market could include Ryan Miller, Jonathan Bernier, Jaroslav Halak and either Ben Bishop or Craig Anderson.
- Bruce Garrioch: The Sabres are listening to offers for defenseman Robyn Regehr, but they haven’t ruled out giving him a contract extension.
- The Fourth Period: The Blackhawks had sent multiple scouts to watch Keith Yandle this week. He has three years left at $5.25 million. It’s unclear how deep talks have been. The Red Wings, Oilers and Flyers also like Yandle. The Blackhawks could offer Niklas Hjalmarsson, a young NHL player or top prospect and a draft pick. The Blackhawks are also interested in Derek Roy.

NHL Rumors I: Bouwmeester, Giordano, Yandle, Miller, Regehr, Jaskin and the Ducks

- Roger Millions: Flames defenseman Jay Bouwmeester admits that he’s talked with management about the possibility for a trade. As many as 6 teams are interested.
- Helene Elliott: Elliott wonders if the Kings would be interested in Bouwmeester. Next season’s $6.8 million salary cap may scare them off.
- Roger Millions: There have also been inquiries about Flames defenseman Mark Giordano. Millions can’t see the Flames trading him.
- Sarah McLellan: McLellan thinks GM Maloney would listen to offers for Keith Yandle, but it would take a lot for him to get trade.
- Andy Strickland of True Hokey: Sabres Ryan Miller’s name is picking up steam. His list of 8 teams that he won’t accept a trade to was handed in at the beginning of the season. Miller might entertain a move out of Buffalo as he want to win. Are the Blackhawks that comfortable with their goaltending?The Kings and Blues have been tied to Sabres Robyn Regehr. Strickland isn’t sure on how interested the Blues are. Regehr’s skating is an issue. He might be the best veteran shutdown defenseman that is available though.Sources say that Sharks GM Doug Wilson will only trade Ryane Clowe if he gets exactly what he wants in return. Wilson may be looking for a roster player in return.
The Blues will likely only trade draft picks and prospects, not roster players.
Blues prospect Drimitrij Jaskin is working on a buyout with his Czech Republic team, opening the door to sign with the Blues.
- The Fourth Period: The Ducks are still looking for a second line center. The OC Register is saying the will now give Peter Holland a try, but GM Bob Murray would like to bring in some more fire power. They have shown interest in Stars Derek Roy and Capitals Mike Ribeiro, but nothing is imminent. If the Capitals move him, they are believed to be looking for a high pick and top prospect. There are some reports that the Ducks and Flyers have talked about moving Bobby Ryan for a package including Sean Courturier. That may be more of a trade for the offseason and not for a team looking to make a run this year.
