Morning Rumors involving the Coyotes, Islanders, Senators, Ducks, Lightning, Leafs, Flyers, Pens, Canadiens, Rangers, Kings, Wild, Stars and Blues

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: If the Coyotes fall out of contention, Ray Whitney could become available. Whitney has a no-movement clause that lists 8 teams he’s willing to be traded to. The Bruins, Rangers and Sharks could be interested. Islanders GM Garth Snow on the trade front and re-signing of Evgeni Nabokov: “We have no intention of moving Evgeni,” Snow said. “He’s been great for us. His performance speaks for itself.” … on re-signing “Yeah, we’d consider all options, we’re just not at that point yet.” Snow has begun talks with P.A. Paranteau. Senators GM Bryan Murray:  “We’ll see if there’s anything that makes sense, but in all likelihood it’s status quo at the moment, anyway.” If the Ducks are going to move one of their big players, it may happen in the offseason as opposed to the deadline. The Ducks could move Lubomir Visnovsky, but they aren’t going to give him away. Lightning defenseman Pavel Kubina has a limited no-trade clause. Kubina submits a 5 team list, he hasn’t been asked yet. Mikhail Grabovski’s agent, who recently met with the Leafs:

“I spoke with Maple Leafs management a couple days ago and I believe they understand our position and we understand their position,” Greenstin told ESPN.com via email Wednesday. “Like I said before, Mikhail loves the city, organization and the fans, and we know the fans like him too. He would like to stay in Toronto and win the Stanley Cup with them, but he is in his prime years in his hockey career and this has to be right for Mikhail and it has to be right for the Maple Leafs.”

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: (Chat) LeBrun doesn’t think the Ducks will trade Getzlaf or Ryan at the deadline unless they get a crazy offer. The Flyers are trying to add a defenseman with experience. LeBrun also thinks the Flyers should add some depth at forward. It’s hard to tell if the Blue Jackets will be able to find a taker for Jeff Carter at this point. On the Penguins search list are Travis Moen and Dominic Moore. The Canadiens could move Hal Gill and Moen. The Blues may look to add a forward if one of Andy MacDonald or Alex Steen doesn’t make it back or isn’t playing like their old self. LeBrun doesn’t think they’ll get their #1 center by the deadline. The Rangers are not interested in Marek Zidlicky. The Lightning could move defensemen Brett Clark and Pavel Kubina. The Kings are looking to upgrade their top 6.
  • Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Russo thinks the Wild have a strong interest in Hurricanes Tuomo Ruutu. The asking price is high as their are many teams interested in him. Rutherford hopes to have a decision made by the start of next week as to whether they will re-sign him or trade him. Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: Rutherford told ESPN: “So our priority now is to try and re-sign him.”
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika doesn’t think the Stars will be buyers at the deadline unless they win their next 6 or 7. They should have a better idea on Feb. 20th. Heika thinks they need to either sign Nicklas Grossman to a 4 or 5 year deal at $3 million a season or trade the pending UFA.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika thinks it might be a good idea to keep Mike Ribeiro as opposed to trading him, especially if they bring in another top 6 to play with Jamie Benn. Riberio is being used in a #1 center role, but may be better suited as a #2 center.
  • Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: Gordon doesn’t see why there are rumors that the Blues need to add a defenseman like Hal Gill or Andy Sutton. Their pairings are playing well and they have Kent Huskins in reserve.
  • Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star: Luke and Brayden Schenn shrug off trade rumors:

“(The Luke-to-Philly rumour) has obviously been tossed around for the past month and a bit,” Brayden said. “It’s hard to go around naive and don’t read anything or hear anything or watch TV. You come to the rink the next day and there’s going to be someone talking about it. Obviously (Luke’s) name has been tossed out there over the past month and a bit. But those are just rumours and I guess we’ll see what happens.”

Said Luke: “One day it would be cool to play together down the road. But right now I’m happy in Toronto and would love to be a part of the Leafs organization. In saying that, you also can’t control what goes on as far as trades go and the trade deadline . . . Anyone can get traded.”

State of the New Jersey Devils: NHL Trade Deadline Edition

Written by Todd Cordell of The Hockey Guys and can be found on twitter at @ToddCordell

We’re just a few weeks away from the NHL Trade Deadline, the Devils find themselves right in the midst of the playoff race; something they weren’t in until it was too late last season. As always, there are a lot of rumors and pieces speculating as to what Devils President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello may do at or before the February 27th Deadline. Before I examine what they may do, attempt to do or anything else I will first look at what they will not to.

There’s a lot to get to in this piece so I figure it’s best to break everything up.

First, what New Jersey is NOT going to do at the deadline.

Morrow available? List of players who “could actually impact the playoff races” … Parise not getting traded … Blake drawing interest … 3 “serious” buyers for Coyotes

  • Bob McKenzie of TSN: There is some talk around the league that Stars forward Brenden Morrow “may” become available before the trade deadline. The Stars are in 10th spot, but only 3 points out and have played less games. Morrow has a no-trade clause and one more year left with a $4.1 cap hit. The Stars won’t aggressively shop him, but contenders could target him. If the Stars could get a nice young package for him, and if he’d agree to it, they would have to consider it. A Stars source said they’re “probably not” going to trade him. One team executive heard:

“Morrow might be available” and “we certainly intend to find out if he is.”

  • Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Gordon lists some players that “could actually impact the playoff races”: Mikhail Grabovski, Nikolai Kulemin, Antoine Vermette, Andrei Kostitsyn, Martin Havlat, Mason Raymond, Evgeni Nabokov, Luke Schenn, Tim Gleason, Antero Niittymaki, Hal Gill, and Marek Zidlicky.
  • Roger Hensley of the St. Louis Post Dispatch: If the Blues need to add a proven scorer is a tough question to answer. Will they be fine when Alex Steen and Andy McDonald return from injury? There may not be a lot of legit scores that are available, and what would be the cost to get one? If Steen and McDonald return, Hensley doesn’t think they need to bring in scoring help, but if they don’t, they may need to explore some other options.
  • Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger: Devils goalie Martin Brodeur has said he’s having fun this year and is leaning towards coming next year. Chere notes that Zach Parise won’t be dealt at the trade deadline, but the odds of him re-signing with them are 50-50.
  • Jason Botchford in the National Post: Canucks forward Mason Raymond has battled his way back from a broken back this year, but he hasn’t been producing and could find his days in Vancouver numbered. He’s well liked, a good penalty killer, has good wheels, but has only scored 33 goals in his last 171 games.
  • Chris Botta via twitter: Ducks Jason Blake is getting some trade interest. Botta notes that the Ducks got better when he returned from injury.
  • Tim Sassone via twitter: If Ducks Jason Blake is available, Sassone thinks he’d look good as the Blackhawks 2nd line center. He wonders if Bob Murray would trade with Stan Bowman. (I don’t think Blake has played center at any point in his NHL career)
  • John Wawrow (AP) in the Globe and Mail: Gary Bettman says there are 3 groups that are showing “serious” interest in the buying the Coyotes that would keep the team there. One of the groups is led by former Sharks president and CEO Greg Jamison and the other is Jerry Reinsdorf.

“We’re going to try to avoid a move of the Coyotes, but if we don’t sell the club, I’m not sure that this won’t be the last season here,” he said.

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Senators captain on Daniel Alfredsson on playing next year:

“The way this season is going, if I’m still healthy after this season, I’m hoping I can go one more,” said Alfredsson. “This year has been so good. If we can make the playoffs, that would almost be a dream come true.”

No one has heard that Subban is availabe … Friendman’s 30 Thoughts rumors … Nothing imminent for Leafs … Coyotes update … Hedman hopes for next week

  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: LeBrun clarifies his comments on RDS. LeBrun talked with several teams yesterday and NONE have heard Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban’s name being available. What LeBrun said on RDS was that a team suggested it could be a possibility, though they hadn’t talked to the Canadiens. Louis Jean via twitter: All the Subban trade talk is “completely ludicrous.”
  • Elliotte Friedman of CBC: If the Canadiens end up looking for a new GM at some point, don’t count out former Avalanche GM Francois Giguere. After the Blues signed Brian Elliott to a 2 year deal, AHL goalie Ben Bishop’s name hit the rumor mill. GMs have now said that Elliott’s trade value has now gone up with his affordable deal. Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is “pulling back” in his quest for a goalie and defenseman.

“He’s made it clear that he’d rather wait than rush through a trade,” said another executive. Yzerman, via email, said, “We aren’t in a position to trade draft picks or young players for rentals.”

Blue Jackets forwards Derick Brassard is off the market. R.J. Umberger might get some interest. A couple teams have heard that Ryan Suter is off the market. The Predators are not interested in a Ryan Ellis or Jon Blum/1st round pick for Ales Hemsky. Sabres Paul Gaustad could be a nice fit in San Jose. One GM thought Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky would fit well in San Jose. One of the reasons the Maple Leafs could be looking to move an NHL defenseman is to create room for Korbinian Holzer. Friedman has heard the Maple Leafs could consider moving Mikhail Grabovski, they are listening to offers. He’s a pending UFA and the Leafs could see the dollar amount an issue. They are also listening on Nikolai Kulemin.

  • David Alter via twitter: Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke said last night that nothing is imminent on the trade front, lots of listening. Burke added that he doesn’t have a problem keeping pending UFA Mikhail Grabovski past the trade deadline without a new contract.
  • Lisa Halverstadt of the Arizona Republic: Glendale City Council met yesterday for an update on the Coyotes situation. The mayor wonders if the NHL is asking price will force the Glendale to pay more. The NHL is trying to get $170 million for the Coyotes, Forbes says they are worth about $36 million less.

“I think it has kept other potential buyers out of the process of trying to purchase the team and I think it is definitely impacting the financial burden that’s being asked of the city of Glendale,” she said.

    Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly:

“We bought this franchise out of bankruptcy when no one else would, and we and our owners have jointly supported its operation for more than two years now,” Daly said. “We and the city of Glendale have a joint problem and we are jointly trying to fix it.”

  • Erik Erendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman, who has been out since Dec. 27th with a concussion, practiced yesterday in a no-contact jersey. He’s hoping to return next Tuesday against the Capitals.
  • John Vogl via twitter: Sabres forward Jochen Hecht has a concussion. He skated yesterday but felt awful after and headed to the doctors.
  • David Staples of the Edmonton Journal: TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported that Oilers GM Steve Tambellini will likely get a 1 or 2 year contract extension. McKenzie said during last night’s Oilers telecast:

“I think he’ll probably get one (a new deal). I think the way the team finishes from now to the end of the season might not make it completely ironclad.”

Video link to Heatley hit … Afternoon injury updates … Preds-Weber talks on hold till off-season

  • TSN: Link to video of SJ-Dallas game. Dany Heatley to have hearing regarding his head shot today. Douglas Murray also delived a questionable hit to Loui Eriksson.
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Stars coach Marc Crawford via text about Erickson, “He’s doing well. Day off for whole team. Loui will be re evaluated tomorrow and we will see then.”
  • Craig Custance via twitter: Predators GM David Poile said that contract extension talks with defenseman Shea Weber are on hold until the off-season.
  • Randy Sportak via twitter: Flames forward Daymond Langkow will skate with teammates today (no contact jersey), he’s been out a year.

  • Mike Vogel via twitter: Michal Neuvirth will be in net for the Capitals tonight. Erskine and Fehr are out. Pierre LeBrun via twitter: LeBrun spoke with Boudreau who said Jason Arnott will be out until early April at the earliest, Backstrom is day-to-day.

Parise hoping to skate soon … Rynnas breaks finger, may change Leafs goalie plans … Cammalleri hopes to be back for Classic … Richards out

  • Tom Gulitti of the Bergon Record: Zach Parise has his next scheduled medical examination on March 2nd, and is hoping to get the go ahead to begin skating, though it would be a while away before he is able to practice with teammates. They tried to get the date moved up but were unsuccessful.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun: Burke said the Flyers were the only team to “meet our price” for Versteeg. Burke still hasn’t given up on this season and has the 3rd round pick in play already. “There were multiple offers, multiple inquiries. We shopped this deal hard. In the end, we didn’t think this package would be there on Feb. 28 (at the NHL trade deadline).” Christian Hanson was called up from the Marlies. Marlies goalie Jussi Rynnas broke his finger, Jonas Gustavsson is still out with his heart issue, so trading JS Giguere may have changed.
  • Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres need a backup goalie they can trust as Ryan Miller has started 31 games in a row, and the Sabres play 16 games in 29 days. They don’t have faith in Lalime, so they could go with Jhonas Enroth and find out if he’s capable, and if he’s not they need to trade for one at the deadline. Mike Harrington via twitter: Ruff said this morning on the radio that Enroth will start tonight and Miller will go tomorrow.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Marek Zidlicky took part in his first practice yesterday “where he was engaged in battle drills.” “I feel better, but it’s not ready,” Zidlicky said. “I don’t want to say a couple more days, but we will see. I’d like to play tomorrow, but it’s day-to-day.”
  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Mike Cammalleri took another step close to returning to the Canadiens lineup in time for the Heritage Classic on Saturday. He practiced with teammate for the first time yesterday since suffering a shoulder separation on Jan. 18th. He’s not playing tonight, doubtful for Thursday, but hoping for Saturday.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Brad Richards will be out of the Stars lineup tonight, and might miss tomorrows game in Calgary and possibly Saturday against the Canucks. Richards was “shook up” by a hit on Sunday on the last shift of the game. Nicklas Grossman is doubtful for the next 2 games. Matt Niskanen should be able to go in place of Grossman.

Bruins would consider trading Leafs 1st round pick … Will need to offer-up to get Bogosian … Seabrook being shopped … Ballard out a month

  • Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post: The Philadelphia Flyers have about $3.5 million in cap space, and may look to find a winger that can play on their 3rd line with Mike Richards and James van Riemsdyk (how many teams would like to have them on their 1st line?). Rental players they may look at include: PA Parenteau, Alex Tanguay, Radek Dvorak, Chris Higgins, Milan Hejduk and Radim Vrbata. The Flyers don’t have a 2nd round pick in this year’s draft. Talks are ongoing with Ville Leino, and the Flyers are believed to have offered a 3 years and $9 million or  4 years, $12 million.
  • Roger Millions via twitter: A source told Millions that the Blackhawks might be talking about trading Brent Seabrook, possibly to the Oilers. Million’s responds, “Really? C’mon.”
  • Mark Spector via twitter: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said he’d consider trading the 1st round pick they got from the Maple Leafs in the Phil Kessel deal: “Yeah, I’d look at it. Sure.” Jimmy Murphy via twitter: Confirms that Chiarelli told WEEI that he’d considering trading Toronto’s 1st round pick.
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Zach Bogosian’s name has come up recently in trade rumors. Bogosian was the 3rd overall pick in 2008 behind Stamkos and Doughty. Is he really available? Yes, but it would take a big offer to get the Thrashers to move him. Thrashers GM Rick Dudley would say nobody on his team is an untouchable. They are not shopping him around either, but would listen to anything. It’s a longshot that he’s traded. Bogosian has struggled this year, recording only 11 points in 45 games so far, though he has played better of late.
  • Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky was wearing a no-contact jersey at practice yesterday. He’s still recovering from a severely separated shoulder that he chose to rehab over surgery. His return is still unknown, it could a week, two, or longer. Guillaume Latendresse is skating by himself, but it’s unsure when he’ll start practicing with the team.
  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Keith Ballard only suffered a knee sprain after being tangled up (some say slew foot) with Milan Michalek on Monday. He’ll be out 3 to 4 weeks. Sami Salo is eligible to return for Saturday’s game against the Flames.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: It looks like the Calgary Flames won’t be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. They are in the playoff race, and they don’t have the draft picks or the prospects.
  • Nick Kypreos via twitter: Islanders forward Trent Hunter had surgery on his torn MCL and should be ready for training camp next year.
  • David Neal of the Miami Herald: Scouts attending last night’s Blues-Panthers game were from: the Devils, Hurricanes, Penguins, Senators, Bruins, Rangers, Canucks, and Kings.

Afternoon rumor roundup, roster notes and starting goalies

  • Darren Dreger of TSN: Trade discussions are heating up. The Blue Jackets may be the closest to making a big deal. Steve Mason, Jakub Voracek and Rostislav Klesla are believed to be getting some interest. A top center and defenseman are of interest to the Jackets. Dale Tallon and Pierre Gauthier spent some time talking before last night’s game, though Tallon said no groundwork was laid. Ray Emery has drawn interest from 3 teams, with the Ducks and Flyers as 2 of them. Teams could make a move in the next 48 hours.
  • Andy Strickland via True Hockey: The LA Kings and soon to be UFA, Justin Williams, have talked contract extension. Williams may be looking for a multi-year deal in the $4.5 million range, which might be out the Kings range.
  • Adrian Dater of the Denver Post: Peter Forsberg appeared to have had a rough practice yesterday, and it’s still unknown if his comeback will be successful. Forsberg hopes he can make a decision soon, maybe by the weekend.
  • Allen Panzeri via twitter: Jason Spezza has been practicing on a line with Alfredsson and Foligno and appears to be ready to go for Saturday.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: It looks like it might be quiet trade deadline for the Minnesota Wild. From GM Chuck Fletcher, “trying to make the playoffs with this group.” There has been no talks of moving any of their potential UFAs. Though he wouldn’t mind giving his team a boost, he won’t mortgage their future. Marek Zidlicky is 2 weeks away from practicing.

Bruins could be fit for Phillips … Kings re-sign Johnson, Doughty update … Injury notes on Semin, Backstrom, DiPietro and more

  • Rich Hammond of LAKingsInsider: The LA Kings have locked up defenseman Jack Johnson to a 7 year, $30.5 million deal. He has a cap hit of about $4.35 million, he’ll earn $3.5 million for the first 3 seasons, $5 million the final 4. GM Lombardi gives and update on Drew Doughty, who’ll be an RFA at the end of the year,

“We’ve had very kick-the-tire discussions on Drew. Part of it was gauging where his play was. Again, Drew is two or three years younger than Jack, so there is a greater period there of growth. We can let it play out a little. We’re obviously going to sign him, and term is not an issue. Now that Jack is in, it gives us a little reference point. Like I said, we have some flexibility in terms of term, and we’ll start pecking away at that. But it’s hard to do three or four (players) at once, because you get confused as to what the mission is. Jack was committed for seven or eight years, and never wavered from that. It was, `OK, let’s get this done, put it in the bank and go do the other one [Doughty].’ So we’ve got one long-term deal in, and if we have to do the other one short-term, we’ve still got the free-agent rights and we can try again later. But it’s nice to have one in the bank.”

  • Katie Carrera of the Washington Post: Alexander Semin had a collision with Steve Bernier in the 2nd period last night, he did not return for the 3rd, and is listed as day-to-day.
  • Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Avs defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk was spotted limping after the game and went for X-rays, results should be known sometime today.
  • Katie Strang via twitter: Rick DiPietro missed practiced yesterday and his heading back to New York to have his groin strain evaluated.
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom will be shut down for a few days with left hip injury. He had surgery on the hip back in 2008-09. Marek Zidlicky will try to rehab his shoulder rather than having surgery. He hopes to be back in 4 to 6 weeks. GM Fletcher isn’t in the market for a replacement right handed Dman.
  • The Globe and Mail: Chris Osgood will have his groin injury checked out by a specialist sometime this week, and it might require surgery. The Red Wings will call up Joey MacDonald.
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Pascal Leclaire will not face shots for at least another week with a lower-body injury. Clouston said “It has to do with lower body and back and hips and groin area … it’s not just a pulled groin. I’m not a doctor but … it’s more complicated than that.” When asked if Leclaire could be lost of the season, “I’m not going to say that, I don’t think it’s to that extent,” … “I’m also going to not say it’s not.”
  • Pierre LeBrun via twitter: Tom Kostopoulus waived his right for an in-person meeting with the NHL regarding his hit on Brad Stuart, which might mean at least a 5 game suspension.
  • Rich Chere via twitter: The Devils won’t announce a new captain yet, they’ll go with 2 assistants for now.
